THE STUDIO MUSEUM IN HARLEM LAUNCHES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A GALA EVENING, RAISING $3.9 MILLION

n Thursday, October 18, The Studio Museum in Harlem welcomed over 800 artists, cultural leaders, civic leaders, business leaders, and philanthropists to its annual Gala, which this year inaugurated the Museum’s historic 50th anniversary celebration. Cochaired by Studio Museum Trustees Jacqueline L. Bradley, Kathryn C. Chenault, Carol Sutton Lewis, and Dr. Amelia Ogunlesi, the event at the Park Avenue Armory featured remarks by Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator, and Raymond J. McGuire, Chairman of the Board. First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray presented the Studio Museum with a Mayoral Proclamation to commemorate the Museum’s historic fifty

year legacy. Studio Museum Trustees Holly Peterson and Ann G. Tenenbaum served as the event’s Founders’ Circle Co-Chairs. The formal program also included the presentation of the thirteenth annual Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize to the Los Angeles-based artist Diedrick Brackens, confirming the meteoric rise of a boundary-defying young artist who has emerged within only the past seven years. The Prize was once again supported by George Wein.

New Mount Zion Baptist Church Ministering for 100 Years & Counting in Harlem

N

ew Mount Zion Baptist Church is located at 171 West 140th Street in between 7th Avenue and Lenox Avenue and is celebrating 100 years of doing God’s work in Central Harlem in the month of November 2018.

The church is blessed that in 100 years it has had only three pastors to lead its congregation; to God be the glory.

Our founding pastor, Rev. William A. Campbell visioned Harlem as the new frontier in NYC for his ministry work while he was pastor of another church on the upper West side. The congregation didn’t want to move so he resigned and moved to Harlem to set up the Little Mount Zion Baptist Church in 1918 with 15

people. They purchased the Hebrew Temple in September 1918 for $25,000.

Church membership grew to 1,500 by the mid-1920s with services offered two times each Sunday; a bigger church had to be built on this site to accommodate the expanding congregation.

William H. Dammond, the 1st black graduate of

Univ. of Pittsburgh in Civil Engineering designed the church’s creative steel structure. The main auditorium seats 800 and is skirted overhead by a balcony that provides room seating for 300; it doesn’t have any structural beams on the main level to hold it up. Construction started and continued despite the failure of the bank holding our building funds and the bankruptcy of the church’s

The church overcame foreclosure in November 1932 and reorganized in 1 month as the New Mount Zion Baptist Church.

The second pastor, Rev. Edward Lloyd Satchell was a dynamic orator and a passionate preacher of the gospel who led the congregation for 36 years from 1958 until 1994. During his tenure the church established the youth scholarship fund, purchased a church parsonage, as well as the first cluster of credit unions in the Harlem area. Mrs. Irene Satchell taught music to its youth, and the current Minister of Music, Sister V. Denise Rhodes continues the legacy of teaching new musicians and vocalists into the 21st century. On Sunday, November 4th at 3:30

pm she will lead the Voices of Zion in a musical worship experience to mark the church’s 100 years.

The third pastor, Rev. Dr. Carl L. Washington, Jr. was installed in 1995 and he updated the sanctuary, fellowship hall, rest rooms, bought church vans and technology such as computers, wi-fi and livestreams services over the internet into the church. The church has sponsored a variety of community outreach activities each year such as an AIDS walk, health fairs with breast & prostate cancer screening, and testing for high blood pressure and diabetes. The bereavement ministry hosts two grief management seminars each year; the annual winter coat drive collects and gives away new and gently used

coats. For Thanksgiving, they give away complete meals of turkey and all the fixings plus they serve and deliver meals on Thanksgiving day. The Van Ministry takes senior citizens to vote for local and national elections and take them back home.

Pastor Carl L. Washington, Jr. is my pastor and “New Mount” as the youth call it is my church. My maternal grandmother and her three sisters joined the church when they migrated north from North Carolina in 1936 and I have worshiped here my entire life. High energy 50 years celebration of James Brown ‘Say it loud: I’m Black and I’m proud’ sets the Apollo on fire!

By Maria Grazia CAVENAGHI aturday October 20th the world-famous Apollo Theater kicked off its 2018-19 season with an extraordinary premiere of Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud at 50 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Godfather of Soul James Brown’s seminal Black Power anthem.

In fact, in 1968, when Brown recorded live at the Apollo “Say It Loud I’m Black and I’m Proud,” the song became a hit and ultimately a theme for the movement.

Under the energizing musical direction of a real Master - six-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Christian McBride - this powerful, unforgettable concert featured an All-Star band and was hosted by nothing less than NAN Leader, Rev. Al Sharpton.

Concert goers will find that the lobbies have been upgraded for ADA compliance with new ramps and carpeting, and the interior of the theater will have new seating, carpeted aisles, and finished flooring as well. The $15.4 million dollar refurbishment of the Center, which is expected to be completed by mid-2019, will also include 5,400 square feet of enlarged space, with a new main entrance and a redesigned box office, plus new administration offices and restroom facilities on the first and mezzanine floors, and an elevator. The Center seats 2,278 people in the concert hall and is the largest of its kind in the borough. Funding for the project is being provided by the Office of the Governor, the New York State Legislature, the Bronx delegation of the New York City Council, and the Office of the

Bronx Borough President. Additional funding is being raised with a seat naming initiative, which allows community members to make a personal connection with one of New York City’s most important not-for-profit entertainment venues.

The Harlem Renaissance was the name given to the cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem between the end of World War I and the middle of the 1930s. During this period Harlem was a cultural center, drawing writers, artists, musicians, photographers, poets, and scholars of African descent to the area.

The mission of Harlem Renaissance 100 is to celebrate and empower Harlem and its communities. t claims a life every three to four minutes, making it one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

The culprit: COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Nationwide, more than 16 million people have been diagnosed with this debilitating lung disease, also known as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. But millions of others likely have COPD and don’t know it, as symptoms develop slowly and worsen over time.

Shortness of breath, chronic coughing, wheezing and excess mucus—all can make even the most mundane tasks difficult, yet many people think these are just normal symptoms of

So, what are the chances you have COPD? Smoking, research has long shown, is the main risk factor for the disease. Some 75 percent

of people who have COPD smoke or once smoked. But long-term exposure to lung irritants such as secondhand smoke, air pollution, and chemical fumes and dust—

from both the environment and workplace—can be a risk factor, too. In some cases, genetics can play a role.

The good news is COPD is highly treatable and man-

ageable. The bad news is, due to the slow progression of the disease, Americans often delay seeking help until the problem is severe, which can lead to serious, long-term disability.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), together with federal and nonfederal partners, has developed the COPD National Action Plan, the first-ever blueprint for collective action to reduce the burden of the disease.

With the action plan as a guide, NHLBI is working across the country to encourage earlier recognition of the disease. But it is giving particular attention to rural areas, where the disease is especially prevalent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COPD is almost twice as likely to affect peo-

ple living in rural communities than in urban ones.

Because of this disparity, NHLBI is taking special steps to help rural residents get the advice it wants everyone to follow: learn the signs and symptoms of COPD, and if breathing issues are impacting even the most basic daily everyday tasks, see a health care professional, such as a primary care provider, nurse practitioner or other specialist.

With a diagnosis and the proper treatment, people with COPD can learn to ably manage their condition.

T

he flash-flash-flash was bad enough.

And then you heard the grrrrrrumble, the wind howled, and you were afraid. But it was okay: it was only a thunderstorm. As you’ll see in the new book “ Lorraine : The Girl Who Sang the Storm Away” by Ketch Secor, illustrated

by Higgins Bond, when it’s over, the sun – among other things – will shine bright.

Lorraine lived on a Tennessee farm with her grandfather, and crops were not the only thing they grew. Music also grew “wild” because, when the workday was over, Lorraine grabbed

her whistle and Pa Paw took out his harp. Until darkness came or storms arrived, they played music together on the porch, or sometimes in fields near the “Chinkypin tree,” when an old crow flew down and joined them in a dance.

By and by, one day, Lorraine noticed that the dinner bell that sat on the kitchen table was gone.

Later that morning, she noticed that the tin scoop in the pigpen – the one that was usually found in a feed bin – was gone.

Then Pa Paw couldn’t find his keys, even though they were just in his pocket.

Every shiny thing on the farm had vanished, and it

looked like the work of a thief!

But before they could figure out who was stealing the sparklies, a “ Tennessee tempest” rolled in.

It crashed and it roared. It BOOMed and it rumbled.

It rolled and it rained and Lorraine , who was usually as fearless as they come, was fearful that night. She ran to her grandfather, who reached in his pocket for his harp and… it was gone, too! And so was Lorraine ’s whistle!

But Pa Paw knew exactly what to do. A storm can take a roof or a tree away. A storm can make a powerful noise and move the earth. But a storm can’t take away the music

Ghana Proclaims 2019 Year of Return to African Descendants

aying homage to the past and a hope to a brighter future, 2019 will officially mark the 400year anniversary since the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to English North America in 1619.

In remembrance of the dark history and the celebration of the Black American’s triumph in the midst of grave adversity, the West African country of Ghana has officially declared 2019, the “Year of Return,” for people of color, inviting the global African family to a birth-right journey back to their home country.

During a heartfelt ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., on Sep. 28, Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, offered an official proclamation “Year of Return, Ghana” as the endorsed time of homecoming for Black people.

“The time has come for people of African descent to make the journey back home,”

Akufo-Addo said. “With historic leaders and creatives like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., WEB DuBois, Maya Angelou, Stevie Wonder, who have all honored Ghana with their presence and been inspired by Ghana… Ghana has opened its arms wide and welcomes its other brothers and sisters back home. Never again should Africans allow themselves to be enslaved… We are home.”

With the announcement serving as the only centrally organized public-private partnership with an African nation, Rep. Sheila Jackson- Lee (D- Texas) expressed her heartfelt sentiments with the new proclamation and her love for her people.

“The continent which I honor and Ghana with its amazing history, will be in the forefront of galvanizing and cementing this wonderful relationship between the nation of the United States of America, the people of the United States of America and the great Republican nation of Ghana with

this wonderful President and First Lady, leading us into the 21st and 22nd century.”

“Those who have never been, if they go, will experience a certain coming of age, that will be grander than we’ve ever imagined,” Jackson continued.

The Ghana Tourism Authority under the auspices of the Tourism Ministry will spearhead the year-long calendar of activities in partnership with the Office of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, the Adinkra group and the Panafest Foundation, led

by Executive Secretary Rabbi Kohain.

“Our mission to remember what they have done, but to also be worthy of their sacrifices,” Kohain said. “This is not

just one event, it’s a historical statement. 400 years has been long enough for people to explain and write and narrate African stories. We must write our own stories.

“Ghana is the only African country with a Black star in the center of its flag,” Kohain continued. “That means Ghana is

the destination for the return to our roots.”

Events scheduled for the upcoming year are said to include the “Bra Fie” Concert hosted by Damien Marley, son of renowned activist and reggae artist Bob Marley, in January, a Homecoming and Investment Summit in June;

Panafest and Emancipation in July, Ghana Carnival in November and Afrochella in December.
