cancer survivor I can say that I came out of the treatment with chemo feeling "Grateful." I am grateful to be alive. I am grateful to have my energy back and I am grateful to God for giving me more time. We now have a new radiology center in Harlem at 324 W 125th St, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology where you can go for your mammogram. In the same space is Got Checked? an advocacy organization for breast cancer who are advocating that the age for mammogram be lower as younger women are being diagnosed with breast cancer. They are also advocating to teach children about breast cancer and have produced a couple of books for children to learn about breast cancer. I found my breast cancer with a self examination and noticed lumps. Take a self exam and please get a mam-

Walking that Thin, Fine Line of Crazy

I

had the opportunity to have breakfast with a beautiful friend the other day. She is truly beautiful inside and out. I am in awe of everything that she does.

She is currently in school.

When completed, she will have a master’s degree in divinity. She’s a wife and the mother of two teenaged boys, one with a developmental disability. And, to round out her amazing life she works with those who have been impacted by sex trafficking going to bars and the streets to engage with prostitutes sharing compassion, understanding and grace. I have known her since she was a teenager when she stole a piece of my heart and never gave it back.

My husband tells me that once when we were accompanying the teenagers on a camping trip (we used to work with youth in our church), he spotted Gwen

(pseudonym) sleeping on the ground. At that time, he remembers telling me that she would grow up to be a special young lady as he witnessed a glow surrounding her. I do not remember that conversation, however, there is zero doubt that we always knew Gwen would be one of the amazing human beings to traverse our earth. Throughout the years, it seems like her outward appearance has only grown more beautiful. I look at her and think, “Gwen is simply gorgeous!”

Then, she opens her mouth and pure love, compassion, understanding and forgiveness all pour forth. I watch and listen stunned by who she has become.

Like most people, Gwen’s life has had its ups and downs. She always seemed to feel things deeply. Some people disappointed her.

Some people hurt her, but through the roller coaster ride of life, she maintained a faith that persevered. She

never rejected another’s faith. She never ridiculed another’s beliefs and she always maintained a steadfast hold on her own.

When her oldest son was born with Down Syndrome, Gwen’s faith was tested.

And, it seemed a little shaky.

At that time, God’s grace shined bright in the perso-

na of Gwen’s husband who lovingly, without hesitation stood tall and proud of his first-born son. Then, together they had to decide if they would try again. Well, faith is not faith unless put to the test, right? They went for it. Their second son did not have the same challenges as the first. He just must face

life’s normal challenges. At the same time, he seems to have inherited their compassion gene for his older brother.

It is a joy to listen to Gwen talk about her life.

The stumbles. The falls.

The bumps. The bruises.

She tells the stories with laughter. She finds humor in the trials. I marvel at the way she experiences each episode.

As we were eating our breakfast, she was explaining the challenges she is having in school understanding theological language – Ancient Greek, Aramaic, even Hebrew. She is just a simple woman, managing a complex life and wanting to do some good in the world. She went on to say, “I am just walking that thin, fine line of crazy!” I fell out laughing.

All I could think is, that’s it right there! Aren’t we all walking that thin, fine line of crazy? Sometimes, we cross over the line and if we

are very lucky, we have help getting back on the path.

Other times, not so much.

That’s why we need people like Gwen. People who help us walk that thin, fine line of crazy.

UEENS, NY – Borough President Melinda Katz — along with the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence and the Queens District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau — will mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October with “A Healthy Families Resource Fair” on Tuesday, October 29th, 2019 from 10 AM to 12:00 noon in the Helen Marshall Cultural Center at Queens Borough Hall.

“Statistically, millions of women and men across the country will endure some form of domestic abuse at the hands of an intimate partner this year, while hundreds more will lose their lives. With Domestic Violence Awareness Month upon us, it is critical that we redouble our efforts to halt this horrific scourge in our society and eliminate the stigma that is too often attached to being a survivor of domestic violence,” said Borough President KATZ. “This Healthy Families Resource Fair will provide a trove of vital information, courtesy of our many participating agencies and community organizations, as we galvanize New Yorkers to join our push to put an end to domestic violence in our City.”

“One in four women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime,” said Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Commissioner CECILE NOEL. “Domestic violence can be so easy for people to ignore, as it often happens without any witnesses and it is sometimes easier to not get involved. Yet, by publicly speaking out against it, we can work together to challenge attitudes towards all

forms of gender-based violence and show that they are crimes and unacceptable. There is too much at stake for future generations to remain silent.”

According to the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, the NYPD responded to more than 111,000 intimate partner-related domestic incident reports in 2018, including 24,577 in Queens.

Citywide, there were 30 reported intimate partner homicides in 2018, with six occurring in Queens.

"Far too often, victims of domestic violence think they are alone.

They suffer in silence, live in fear and believe no one can help them. But they are far from alone. We are here and there are numerous agencies and programs available to help. No one should have to live with a partner or a family member who hurts them,” said Acting Queens District Attorney JOHN RYAN. “The Healthy Family Resource Fair is an opportunity to connect with the residents of Queens County in an effort to one day end domestic violence."

Nationally, one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence or intimate partner stalking over the course of their lives, according to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence. A Northeastern University study published in April 2019 showed that 2,237 Americans — 1,527 of whom were women — were murdered by an intimate partner in 2017, a 19-percent increase over a four-year period.

On hand at the Resource Fair —

which is free to attend and open to the public — will be representatives from City agencies and community groups such as the NYC Commission on Human Rights, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, the Arab American Family Support Center, Garden of Hope, Jewish Association Serving the Aging, Legal Information for Families Today, Safe Horizon Domestic Violence Law Project, Sanctuary for Families, Violence Intervention Program, Inc., AIDS Center of Queens County, Korean American Family Support Center, the LGBT Network, Planned Parenthood and more.

The program will include a presentation by Kelly Sessoms-Newton, chief of the Queens District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau and remarks by Assistant Commissioner for Family Justice Centers and Outreach Jennifer DeCarli.

In front of Borough Hall, a Planned Parenthood mobile unit will offer free and confidential walk-in services, including health insurance enrollment and wellness exams.

Closing remarks from Assistant Commissioner for Family Justice Centers and Outreach Jennifer DeCarli, preceded by a dance performance, will conclude the event.

Optimism Springs This Fall for Small and Mid-Size Business Owners Statepoint

T

he success of small and mid-size businesses is an important economic indicator, and new survey results show encouraging news.

Despite pricing pressures, talks of tariffs and even recession, those in the business community are by and large feeling good this fall.

The most recent PNC Economic Outlook survey, conducted semi-annually, found that 55 percent of small and mid-size business owners describe their outlook for their own business as optimistic -- a near record high in the survey’s 16-year history, with about a third of respondents planning to increase the size of their workforce within the next

six months.

Looking further ahead, optimism does wane, with only 46 percent of respondents be-

lieving a recession is unlikely in 2020 and 34 percent believing a recession is unlikely in 2021.

iahann Carroll, the trailblazing actress and first Black woman to star in a non-servant role in a television series has died. She was 84.

Carroll starred as nurse Julia Baker in “Julia,” the hit NBC show that aired from 1968 to 1971. The show represented the first time a Black person – man or woman – was cast as in the title role of a show, portraying a character that wasn’t a maid or other type of domestic worker.

“For a hundred years we have been prevented from seeing accurate images of ourselves and we’re all overconcerned and overreacting,” Carroll said in a 1968 interview with TV Guide. “The needs of the White writer go to the superhuman being. At the moment, we are presenting the White Negro. And he has very little Negro-ness,” Carroll stated.

Prior to “Julia,” Carroll starred in the Broadway musical, “No Strings,” for which she earned a Tony Award for best actress in 1962. In perhaps her most memorable role, Carroll earned an Oscar nomination for best actress in the James Earl Jones-led motion picture, “Claudine.”

She later starred in the hit nighttime soap opera, “Dynasty,” and made recurring appearances on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “A Different World.”

In 2011, Carroll was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. “The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) salutes the living legacy of Diahann Carroll, may she rest in peace,” said NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. The NNPA is a trade association representing the broad expanse of African American-owned newspapers and media companies that make up the Black Press of America. “Diahann Carroll was a courageous trailblazer, freedom-fighting sister leader in film, on stage, the

TV screen, and in the African American community,” Chavis stated.

“God bless and long live the irrepressible spirit of Diahann Carroll.”

Several prominent celebrities also saluted Carroll on social media.

“Diahann Carroll you taught us so much,” tweeted actress, dancer and director Debbie Allen. “We are stronger, more beautiful and risk takers because of you. We will forever sing your praises and speak your name,” Allen wrote. Famed film director Ava DuVernay wrote that Carroll “walked this earth for 84 years and broke ground with every footstep.” DuVernay noted that Carroll was an icon.

“One of the all-time greats.

She blazed trails through dense forests and elegantly left diamonds along the path for the rest of us to follow.

Extraordinary life. Thank you, Ms. Carroll,” DuVernay wrote.

According to NBC News, Carroll is survived by her daughter, Kay, and grandchildren, August and Sydney.

Several hundred VIPs, including former Mayor David Dinkins and former WNBA star Kim Hampton, donned their finery - and sneakers - to attend the Arthur Ashe Institute For Urban Health's 25th

annual SportsBall Oct. 2 at the Hyatt in midtown Manhattan.

Hosted by NY1's Ruschell Boone and Inside Edition's Les Trent, the gala awards paid tribute to honorees Dr. Sydney Butts, the chief of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital Brooklyn/SUNY Downstate Health Services University and Kings County Hospital and Guy Vickers, president of the PVH Foundation at PVH Corp.

Rounding out the list of winners were veteran local news journalist Cheryl Wills, and tennis legend Stan Smith, a president of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, who, in his remarks, recalled that his friend Ashe inspired him to help the less fortunate.

"He drove himself with an urgency as if knew he had a limited time to make an impact," Smith said.

"He never said 'why me.'

He was frustrated but at

peace with his life."

The event's auction raised more than $30,000 to benefit the institute's programs and services.

The U.S. Tennis Association also awarded scholarships for $1,968 to students in honor of Ashe's 1968 win at the U.S. Open.

Ashe created the Insitute for Urban Health just months before he died from complications from AIDS in February 1993.

The institute works to alleviate healthcare inequities through its Health Sciences Academy, which

prepares high school students for careers in medicine. The institute's signature initiatives, "Barbershop Talk With Brothers," and "Ready Set, PrEPare" train barbershop and salon employees to provide culturally competent health information to their clients.

"Arthur Ashe envisioned an organization embedded in the community and focused on healthcare disparities in the community," Dr. Marilyn Fraser, the CEO of the institute, said. "The institute that

Arthur envisioned would improve health outcomes, increase diversity and close health disparities through community-based approaches."

Brett Wright, CEO, and co-founder of Uptown Media Ventures and the chairman of the institute's board of directors said it was remarkable that Ashe's impact was still being felt more than 25 years after his passing.

Jasmine Gripper to lead Statewide Education Advocacy Organization Beginning in 2020

S

tatewide education advocacy organization the Alliance for Quality Education announced today that Jasmine Gripper will be taking on the role of executive director in January 2020. Gripper will be taking over from Billy Easton, who is stepping down after leading the organization since 2005.

Gripper currently serves as legislative director of AQE, and will be assuming this leadership role at AQE as the organization marks its 20th year of parent, family and student organizing and advocacy. Under Gripper’s leadership, AQE will continue to deepen its commitment to education justice and racial justice, working to ensure that all children and families have access to

high quality public schools in every neighborhood.

Through grassroots organizing and leadership development AQE will continue to empower Black, Brown and low income families to shift education policy in order to create the schools New York’s children need and deserve.

After a stint with the Obama re-election campaign, she found AQE as a perfect meld of her love of education and talent for organizing. Gripper joined AQE in 2013 as a temporary statewide organizer, and rose quickly to managing the organization’s legislative advocacy strategy as Legislative Director.

In 2016 she was named as one of City and State’s 40 under 40 rising stars. Jasmine Gripper was born and raised in Queens. She is a proud graduate of the New York City public school system and CUNY’s Hunter College.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia: The 10 Warning Signs You Need to Know (StatePoint)

ecognizing and taking steps to address the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias can be extremely challenging -- especially in the early stages. It’s easy and common to dismiss cognitive changes in oneself or a family member as “normal aging.”

“Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging,” says Dr. Keith Fargo, director, scientific programs and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association. “With normal aging, you may forget where you parked your car -- that happens to all of us. But if you get in your car and get lost coming home -- that’s not normal.”

Alzheimer’s is a fatal progressive disease that at-

tacks the brain, killing nerve cells and tissue, affecting an individual’s ability to remember, think, plan and ultimately function. Today, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, that number is projected to skyrocket to nearly 14 million.

To help families identify signs early on, the Alzheimer’s Association offers 10 Warning Signs and Symptoms, a list of some common signs that can be early symptoms of Alzheimer’s or other dementias: 1. Disruptive memory loss. Forgetting recently learned information, asking the same questions over and over and increasingly relying on memory aids.

2. Challenges in solving problems. Changes in one’s ability to develop and

follow a plan or work with numbers, such as having trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills.

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks. Difficulty completing daily tasks, such as organizing a grocery list or remembering the rules of a favorite game.

4. Confusion with time or place. Losing track of dates, seasons and the passage of time.

5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. Vision problems, which may lead to difficulty with balance or trouble reading.

6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. Trouble following or joining a conversation or a struggle with vocabulary. For example, calling a

“watch” a “hand-clock.”

7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. Putting things in unusual places and being unable to go back over one’s steps to find them again.

8. Decreased or poor judgment. Changes in judg-

ment or decision-making when dealing with such matters as money and grooming.

9. Withdrawal from work or social activities. Changes in the ability to hold or follow a conversation can result in a withdrawal from

hobbies or social activities.

10. Changes in mood and personality. Mood and personality changes, such as confusion, suspicion, depression, fearfulness and anxiety.

The Principle of Correspondence

aoist wellness practitioners view Autumn as the element of metal and the vital human organs that correspond with metal or the Lungs (Yin) and the Large Intestine (Yang).

The practice of assigning internal organ maintenance with the changing seasons dates back to the writings of Imhotep - the true father of medicine who lived over 1000 years before the birth of Hippocrates.

Imhotep was a student of Tehuti also known to the Greeks as Hermes. The

teachings of Hermes is based on seven Principles later labeled by the Greeks as the Seven Hermetic Principles. The Hermetic Principle of Correspondence “As above so below; as below, so above” means that the frequency of the vital organs in the human body have a direct relationship with the movement of the planets and the changing seasons.

Wayne Chandler describes it this way (in his book ‘Ancient Future)” When we perceive our solar system as being vast and mystifying with the Sun at its center and the planets in orbit around the Sun. We should also consider the same patters on a small-

Much of the ancient Eygpt wellness approach to health was lost due to religious persecution, the concepts of medical writings and practices such as surgery were believed heretic. Many of the Hermetic scholars fled Egypt taking their knowledge to the Middle East and Asia.

It is no wonder why many still find it difficult to embrace the concept of how seasons can determine the straight and weakness of their internal organs. Taoism philosophy is based on the concept of energy, a plus and a minus or Yin and Yang. The Hermetic Principles of Vibration and Polarity are the foundation for the Yang Yin concept.

All things vibrate and everything has its pair of opposites.

“Infinite Hope: A Black Artist’s Journey from World War II to Peace” by Ashley Bryan REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

B

efore you even begin to take notes, the page is full of doodles.

You can’t help it: it’s human nature to scribble stars and squiggles, to write your name, make boxes around words, and draw silly faces. If there’s a pen in your hand, you use it, right? And in “Infinite Hope” by Ashley Bryan, one man used a pen to stay alive.

Like every child with some crayons and paper, Ashley Bryan loved to make art. Even his teachers noticed his talent and they

nurtured it but alas, Bryan couldn’t land a scholarship to art colleges because of the color of his skin. It was the early 1940s, and Jim Crow laws didn’t allow it.

On the advice of others, Bryan applied to attend The Cooper Union in New York City and he loved it there. The school helped grow his talents and he was eager for the future – but then, at age nineteen, he received his draft notice.

Bryan was headed for World War II. For someone who grew up in the North, Basic

Training was quite unexpected. Men at the military induction center were told “’Whites on one side.

Blacks on the other’,” and Bryan was shocked! It took a minute to understand that the military was segregated but, like all Black soldiers then, he hoped that serving during wartime might lead to “equal treatment for all.”

Sometimes, soldiering was boring, so Bryan drew. He sketched fellow soldiers, their bunks, and their jobs. He drew the children who befriended him near his first post in

Boston. He painted pictures of the docks. When he went overseas, he sketched castles in Scotland and villages in the countryside. He wrote letters home to his cousin, Eva, and he drew card games and cold mornings until June 2, 1944, when Bryan and his brothers-inarms were sent to Normandy. There, he drew cathedrals, people, despair, and destruction. He wrote to Eva about what he saw and when the war was over, that was that.

Without a lot of narrative, author-illustrator Ashley Bryan tells a tale of segregation, war, racism, and horror but while it’s vividly told, readers aren’t left aching: threaded in with every chapter of Bryan’s life is a also sense of joy. He takes obvious delight in the people he meets and he has his art: soaring sketches, pensive portraits, and single lines drawn thick to depict the chaos of war. These are accompanied, collage-like, with letters home that are multi-layered over the art and that will leave an impact on newly-aware teens and adults who remember all too well.

Either way, give “Infinite Hope” and then borrow it back to see yourself.

Columbia University Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

GAZING AT THE STARS, BRINGING OTHERS ALONG ON THE JOURNEY Marcel Agüeros never dreamed of becoming an astronomer.

“I grew up in Manhattan, and there weren’t many dark, starry nights to inspire me,” Agüeros said.

Things changed during the summer of his junior year at Columbia College, which he spent at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, “an hour from my abuela’s house.”

He had first visited Arecibo as a 12-year-old. “But now I was part of the team using its huge radio dish to listen in on what was happening out in the universe,” he said. “It cemented my desire to be an astronomer.”

Now a professor at Columbia University in the Department of Astronomy, Agüeros studies how stars like our sun change over time. He examines how those changes might affect the planets around them. “We’re going to find another Earth soon,” Agüeros said. “My work is part of figuring out how likely that planet is to host life.”

Agüeros also directs his department’s outreach efforts. Columbia astronomers host free public lectures and stargazing events. They visit local public schools.

A decade ago, Agüeros created a program to show teachers from around the city how to use telescopes, knowledge they could bring back to their schools.

“It’s a great way to excite students about science in general and astronomy in particular,” he said.

In addition, Agüeros founded a program to help underrepresented minorities get into science Ph.D. programs. “There are far too few women and students of color in our fields,” he said. “It’s a problem that I am committed to fixing.” In 2015, Agüeros received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. President Obama praised his groundbreaking research and his desire to ensure that minority students become tomorrow’s leaders in science.

“I didn’t realize it as a kid, but even New York’s bright, cloudy nights are an amazing resource,” Agüeros said. “Watching the moon go through its phases or spotting Venus shining brightly after sunset is magical. It connects us to one of humanity’s oldest activities: contemplating the universe and our place in it.”
