Many of our small business owners live in the community and are raising their family in the community. See some small businesses you can shop with now and throughout the holiday season. (see pages 19-20).

Holiday lights are shinning on 125th Street in Harlem. Let us begin to enjoy the Holiday season and practice safe distancing and wearing our masks. Continue to outdoor dining. Zoom is the way to go to connect with friends, your church, organizations and family this holiday season. Many of you will be tempted to gather with family and friends, consider the CDC warnings and gather outside, if you must gather or limit your Thanksgiving dinner to those already in your household.

Just a few more weeks before Biden and Harris are in the white house and we can be hopeful for a national plan to end this Pandemic and restore the economy. The holidays will prove to be a hard time for many to practice social distancing, however, I am hopeful many will realize how important it is for us to continue to be safe until the numbers are down and become extinct. I look forward to the day when COVID is something we talk about that happened in the past.

I

t is mind boggling to think about how so many of us have been sequestered in our homes or apartments since March 2020 when COVID-19 came to town. In a few weeks it will be nearly eight months that eyes have been the primary source of recognition in the mask wearing

Halloween came and a mask was the prominent feature of every costume for safety sake with little to do about trick or treat.

At first the fear of the virus brought urgent compliance to whatever measures for safety came down the pipelines. Nobody was denying the warnings to cooperate spoken daily by mayors and governors across the nation on hospitalizations and deaths. We were all on the case, willing to do our part.

That was in the beginning.

New York really stepped up to the plate, after reports revealed

it was the city with the highest pandemic fatalities. Then, the people of the city and others began to get impatient. They insisted stores and non-essential spaces reopen, including some schools and beauty salons. Too many moved forward like happy campers, licking their wounds, and forgetting too soon what could be lurking in the crowds. It was a disappointing setback to hear the mayor and governor cast updated warnings about the numbers rising again and the possibility of schools closing back.

With thankfulness in the good that has come to pass, especial-

ly the high listings of survivors of this insipid disease, it would be fruitless to brag about what has been done and not serious about the state of where we are in this fight for life. Be not swayed or fooled, the pandemic has not ended. The United States is in dire straits in some areas where infections have risen higher and in others it has returned with a vengeance.

This is not the time to let our guard down and move foolishly into activities and crowds unnecessarily.

taken not to make it the last time you get to visit your friends and family because of one thoughtless gesture.

There are alternatives to meeting in person.

This is the time when we must take heed to what we are being told by those in the know, medicine and science. We know the mask works in protecting the wearer and those with whom they come in contact. Social distancing helps greatly, but still there is question as to how far and wide the droplets of the virus spread as we speak, sing or shout.

Too many are suffering loss in family

and business. We must share their pain and acknowledge their devastation. What we can all claim as members of humanity is the right to save lives, beyond our own. It is selfish and inexcusable to take any other route than one that will be beneficial to most people who want to live. Do the right thing consistently.

Tellingly, Paris demurred when asked by the Associated Press what her late father might think of her music.

“I don’t know. I’m not him, so I can’t speak for him,” she responded.

“But I hope he would be happy, and I think he would be stoked because I’m happy.”

he American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, is helping to keep families and communities safe from the flu by providing facts, resources and encouraging people to get a flu vaccine.

“Getting the flu vaccine is especially important this year. If you get the flu, you may need to be hospitalized, in this time of COVID-19, in an already overwhelmed healthcare system.

Get your flu shot. Avoid getting the flu. Stay out of the hospital due to the flu,” said Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, American Heart Association chief medical officer for prevention and former commissioner of health for the state of Texas.

“In a normal year, the flu is serious and can even cause death.

The flu vaccine can keep you out of a hospital.”

While it is important for almost everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine, it’s especially important for those at highest risk: • Seniors and people with underlying risk factors such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, among others. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), those 50 years-old and older, living with one or more chronic conditions, are at high risk for the flu. New Study Suggests COVID Patients More Susceptible to Mental Illness

M

edical and scientific experts have sounded the alarm, wanting people to understand that COVID is not the flu or a common cold, and recovery may not be permanent.

According to a new study, 20 percent of recovering coronavirus patients develop some form of mental illness within 90 days.

Researchers at Oxford University in Great Britain noted that first-time diagnosis of anxiety, depression, and insomnia increased two-fold in patients after they’ve recovered from COVID. Further, they discovered that COVID survivors also found significantly higher

risks of dementia.

“People have been worried that COVID-19 survivors will be at greater risk of mental health problems, and our findings … show this to be likely,” Paul Harrison, a professor of psychiatry at Oxford, told Reuters. “(Health) services need to be ready to provide care, especially since our results are likely to be underestimates (of the number of psychiatric patients),” he added.

The study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal, analyzed electronic health records of 69 million people in the United States, including more than 62,000 cases of COVID-19.

With all eyes on Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona, it was the Keystone State’s 20 electoral college votes that put Biden over the top, and helped America send the message Trump had become known for years earlier during 16

“This election transcends party and gives voice to the voters who want affordable health care, economic stability, quality education for their children, and wholesale relief from the pandemic and structural inequality.

ne day before the Associated Press and other media outlets called the 2020 Presidential Election for Democrat Joe Biden, San Francisco Sun Reporter Publisher Amelia Ashley-Ward communicated with her longtime homegirl, Sen. Kamala Harris.

“I told her ‘It had to be you,’” Ashley-Ward, whose more than 76-year-old newspaper, the Sun Reporter, is among the oldest in the 230-plus member Black Press of America.

As she had done so many times in her nearly two-decade friendship 18

with Ashley-Ward, Sen. Harris quickly responded: “We’ve been on this journey for a long time.

Thank you, Sister Amelia, love you very much,” the Vice-President Elect responded.

Ashley-Ward proudly says she had Harris’ back since the renowned former District Attorney and California Senator began her glass-ceiling shattering political career.

Harris wasn’t a household name, but all that mattered to Ashley Ward was that she was a sister with immense talent and on the rise.

“I gave up a close

friendship with her former boss in the District Attorney’s office to support Kamala,” Ashley-Ward told Black Press USA. “People were saying that they didn’t really know her. Well, she’s definitely a sister, and she’s brilliant, she’s warm, she’s easy to talk to, she’s nurturing, she doesn’t back down, and she’s fearless.”

On Saturday, November 7, 2020, when Joe Biden and Sen. Harris cemented victory and claimed their status as President and Vice-President-Elect, Ashley-Ward sat and reflected joyfully inside a San Francisco beauty salon.

“I cried, and there were three or four other women there who jumped for joy,” recalled Ashley-Ward, who, by her association with Vice President-Elect Harris, has become somewhat of a celebrity.

The New York Times has been among the outlets that have called Ashley-Ward to gain insight into Harris.

A longtime member of the Black Press and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), Ashley-Ward formally introduced Harris to her Black Press family in 2018.

That year, Harris received the honor as the NNPA’s 2018 News-

maker of the Year Award during Black Press Week in Washington, D.C. Ashley-Ward escorted her friend into a ballroom to accept the award.

“In all of my years covering news in our community, Sen. Harris has been one of the smartest, most fearless, steadfast and caring politicians that I have come to know,” Ashley-Ward stated during the ceremony.

“She has a lot to offer the world. We are so fortunate to have her advocating on our behalf.”

Ashley-Ward has never been shy about her endorsement of Harris.

The Senator and former District Attorney often checked-in with

Ashley-Ward from time to time.

“It’s important that the Black Press is not left out of this historic occasion,” Ashley-Ward remarked.

“We have to make sure that people know that she’s of the Black community. Black women helped to elect her, and I’ve been with her from the very beginning with the Black Press.

“I was the first newspaper, a Black newspaper, to endorse her when no one believed in her. It’s always been the Black women. As I told her, it had to be you. I love you, Madame Vice President. That felt good to say.”

‘How Did 12 Percent of Black Men vote for Trump?’

uan Williams posited that he’s a Black man born in a Latin country and grew up in a Spanish-speaking family.

The author and Fox News political analyst then stated a head-scratching fact that many still find difficult to rationalize.

“It stuns me to see that President Trump set a record last week by attracting the highest percentage of the non-white vote of any Republican presidential candidate in the last 60 years,” Williams wrote in an editorial for The Hill.

Perhaps most stunning, lamented Williams, “How did 12 percent of Black men vote for Trump?”

Although an overwhelming majority of Black men, 80%, voted for President-Elect Joe Biden, support for the Democratic presidential ticket reached a new low among Black men in 2020, according to the NBC News poll of early and Election Day voters.

In the same poll, 8% of Black male voters were reported to have cast their ballots for alternative candidates.

In Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, of all Blacks casting ballots, 95 percent of Black men and 96 percent of Black women chose him, NBC News reported.

Four years later, Black women’s support remained at 96 percent for Obama’s 2012 re-election. However, the black male vote decreased to 87 percent.

In 2016, when the nominee was Hillary Clinton, Black men dropped even further to 82 percent, while

Black women’s support for Clinton remained high at 94 percent. Biden came close to matching that this year, garnering the support of 91 percent of Black women.

I believe COVID was part of nature’s way of motivating change. Nature is selective; those who go with the flow of change have a competitive advantage over those who do not.

I often write about strengthening the immune system; it is one of the most critical purveyors of our phys-

ical wellness. It is your defense system that protects our body from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses.

A healthy immune system can prevent harmful and unwanted pathogens from affecting our healthy cells and tissue.

A strong immune system is our first line of defense against any coronavirus strain that can invade our bodies.

COVID-19 (at this stage of its development) seems to be reacting like other coronaviruses such as the common cold and the Flu. Most people who have died or have become critically ill had weak or challenged immune systems.

In the mid-‘80s, scientific research discovered that our immune

system was highly intelligent’ it became known as “a floating brain” because immune cells react to chemical messages sent by the brain throughout the body.

Negative thinking, fear, doubt, and anger will weaken your immune system; this is no time to have a weak immune system. The most important point in all of this is that nature is selective: those who are not aware of their ability to straighten their immune system (or how to prepare it) will battle with invading pathogens and may find themselves on the negative side of the next stage of human development.

I cannot express the importance of mindfulness meditation as

We are in the first stage of a new beginning of how life will be; a new way of thinking will become crucial. We will not be productive if we do not challenge old health methods that focus only on cure and not prevention.

Learning to adjust to this new age will also demand a change in lifestyle. Learning to balance your mind, body, and spirit will become an important survival tool.

“Glory: Magical Visions of Black Beauty” by Kahran and Regis Bethencourt

o relax, or not to relax?

Why not?

Whatever. Your hair has gone through several stages of change: you’ve braided, straightened, curled, permed, and loc’d, put it beneath a turban, a durag, scarves, wigs, and kangols. It’s been shaved, picked, plucked, pulled back, and done up. There were times when you fought your own hair, and you don’t want your children to go through that. So look for “Glory” by Kahran and Regis Bethencourt, and call the kids.

As photographers, Kahran and Regis Bethencourts say that

they consider themselves “cultural storytellers” who believe that Black culture has been “under-celebrated.” For far too long, for instance, Black children were led to believe that their hair and skin was “not long enough, not straight enough... too dark or too light.” As the Bethencourts noticed the somberness in their portraits of children,

they recalled personal memories of childhood hair issues and decided that “acceptable black beauty was not our natural beauty...”

They vowed to change the perception.

The children in these pages “are a recognition and celebration of the beauty and versatility of black beauty and its innate glory,” they said. The kids were

chosen because they were change-makers, because they’ve stood up to adversity, racism, bullying, illness, poverty, loss, or other hardships. Some wear the costumes of Kings and Queens here, while some reflect the dress of their cultures.

Among others, there’s Nia from England, who overcame a skin condition that

left her scarred. There’s Kaylee, a singer from Chicago. Nariah from Maryland is a definite foodie. There’s Mbali from South Africa, whose modeling career helped her to overcome shyness. Darryl from Kenya, who wears his dreadlocks with pride, even though they’re frowned upon in his culture. Havana from Germany hopes to be an astronaut someday.

Kheris from California founded a clothing company. Bryson in Arkansas is “a kid advocate” for HBCUs. And there’s Ava, a fair-skinned, blonde and blind African American elevenyear-old who learned to “appreciate the way God created me.”

You’ll immediately see that the title is apt.

Indeed, much is glorified inside this book, including the no-nonsense strength and dowhat-needs-doing attitude of the generation coming up. These kids are pretty incredible, as evidenced by the brief biographies that accompany every portrait.

Some will bring you tears, while others are downright empowering.

Speaking of empowering, inspirational quotes are scattered throughout so look for them – that is, if you can take your eyes off the exquisite portraiture from photographers Kahran and Regis Bethencourt. The lighting in each is perfect.

The costumes that the children wear are gorgeous. The kids come from everywhere and both boys and girls are elegantly represented in portraits that are nothing but respectful of their essences.

This is the kind of book that anyone of any age can enjoy.
