Roy Hargrove, Trumpeter Who Gave Jazz a Jolt of Youth, Dies at 49

R

oy Hargrove, a virtuoso trumpeter who became a symbol of jazz’s youthful renewal in the early 1990s, and then established himself as one of the most respected musicians of his generation, died on Friday in Manhattan. He was 49.

His death, at Mount Sinai Hospital, was caused by cardiac arrest brought on by kidney disease, according to his manager, Larry Clothier. He said Mr. Hargrove had been on dialysis for 13 years.

Beginning in his high school years Mr. Hargrove expressed a deep affinity for jazz’s classic lexicon and the creative flexibility to place it in a fresh context. He would take the stock phrases of blues and jazz and reinvigorate them while reminding listeners of the long tradition whence he came.

“He rarely sounds as if he stepped out of a time machine,” the critic Nate Chinen wrote in 2008, reviewing Mr. Hargrove’s album “Earfood”for The New York Times. “At brisk tempos he summons a terrific clarity and tension, leaning against the current of his

rhythm section. At a slower crawl, playing fluegelhorn, he gives each melody the equivalent of a spa treatment.”

In the late 1990s, already established as a jazz star, Mr. Hargrove became affiliated with the Soulquarians, a loose confederation of musicians from the worlds of hip-hop and neosoul that included Questlove, Erykah Badu, Common and D’Angelo. For several years the collective convened semi-regularly at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan, recording albums now seen as classics.

Mr. Hargrove’s sly horn overdubs can be heard, guttering like a low flame, on records like “Voodoo,” by

D’Angelo, and “Mama’s Gun,” by Ms. Badu.

“He is literally the oneman horn section I hear in my head when I think about music,” Questlove wrote on Instagram after Mr. Hargrove’s death.

Even as he explored an ever-expanding musical terrain, Mr. Hargrove did not lose sight of jazz traditions. “To get a thorough knowledge of anything you have to go to its history,” he told the writer Tom Piazza in 1990 for an article about young jazz musicians in The New York Times Magazine. “I’m just trying to study the history, learn it, understand it, so that maybe I’ll be able to develop something that hasn’t been done yet.”

In 1997 he recorded the album “Habana,” an electrified, rumba-inflected parley between American and Cuban musicians united under the band name Crisol. The album, featuring Hargrove originals and compositions by jazz musicians past and present, earned him his first of two Grammy Awards.

Apollo Live Wire A Conversation with The Last Poets Led by Chuck D.

n Monday, November 5th, 2018 the Apollo Education Live Wire Legendary series presented The Last Poets founding group member Abiodun Oyewole and core group member Felipe Luciano, in conversation with hiphop pioneer Chuck D. at the Apollo Theater located at 253 West 125th Street in the village of Harlem.

The free program began at 6:30 pm and the series is honoring iconic artists who have impacted the arts and culture.

The evening’s program paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Last Poets, a group that was formed in 1968 in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park and quickly became

a force on the Black Arts Movement. The music and poetry scene that gave a voice to the Black experience in America that has inspired generation of artists and activists for years to come including Gil Scott Heron. Hip-hop pioneer Chuck D, the leader of the ground-breaking group Public Enemy led the discussion about the group’s origins, impact, recordings and enduring legacy.

Abiodun Oyewole came into this world as Charles Davis and grew up in Queens, N.Y. He has dedicated close to 50 years to using his poetry to educate by articulating, glorifying and protesting the impurities of the black experience in America and worldwide.

His work has had a profound influence across the hip-hop landscape and has been sampled by Notorious BIG, NWA, A Tribe Called Quest and he has collaborated with notable rappers such as Nas, Common and Dead Prez on award winning album

projects. For the past 30 years he has opened his home every Sunday to poets, rappers, singers and everyday people to continue his work with an unwavering commitment to the next generation of conscious minds.

Felipe Luciano is one

of the most dynamic black Latino men in the United States whose life has defied the odds. Born and raised by a single Puerto Rican mother in poverty he went from serving two years for attempted manslaughter, to going to Queens College through the SEEK program to becoming a member of The Last Poets. As a Last Poet he led provocative political workshops in Harlem that attracted leading members of the black power movement like Stokely Carmichael and H. Rap Brown. He went to lead the Young Lords from an organization to a political party to hosting the acclaimed radio show Latin Roots to television news and is a two-time Emmy recipient for his

work as a former WNBC-TV New York news anchor.

The discussion moderator was Chuck D., who along with Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. As a lyricist in contemporary music he helped paved the way for political, social and culturally conscious hip-hop. His first book, This Day in Rap and HipHop History, was published in October 2017 and it’s the first comprehensive history of hiphop music spanning over 44 years.

The discussion between these three men and the questions that followed from the audience was awe inspiring to fans of the spoken word.

he Rotary Club of Harlem partnered with Active Plus and other local New York and Harlem organizations to host a very successful second annual “Food for the Soul: Food Packing Event” on November 3, 2018.

Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer said it well in the speech she made to thank the community members that came out, “We cannot do it alone.”

It takes a community to help a community.

This community event really highlighted the generosity of spirit, will and time of the uptown community. Over 160 volunteers came together at the Salvation Army Harlem Temple and spent the day packing, simple but nutritious protein-enriched meals provided by The Outreach Program.

25,488 meals were packed in just four hours and were ready for distribution to food pantries at the Salvation Army, the Fraternite Notre Dame, as well as three members of Harlem Congregation for Community Improvement (“HCCI”): Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church, Saint Charles Borromeo Church and Convent Avenue Baptist Church.

. Diddy, Puff Daddy, Sean John, Puff or Brother Love-either way this Bad Boy hip hop tycoon has earned the right to call himself whatever he so desires, just don’t call him “sleeping” because this extremely intelligent business man never sleeps, he walks in silence.

While the media frantically seeks negativity in the hip hop culture, Mr. Combs the rapper, producer, song writer, actor and lover of his people, is making “power moves”.

An evening celebrating the engagement party of Mr. Kevin Liles, music executive and past president of Def Jam Records and his now wife Erika, turns into not only a powerful business collaboration, but of a mutualism which makes education histo-

ry. It was at Kevin’s party that Diddy briefly spoke with Dr. Steve Perry, a highly sought -after educator and mentor of at-risk youth. Diddy and Dr. Perry both noted how much they’ve admired each other’s work and Diddy tells Dr. Perry that he has always wanted to open a school, while Perry wishes him luck. Diddy goes on to state, “No, we should open a school together.” Dr. Perry was cautious at first and it was not based on Diddy’s bad boy reputation at the time.

The year was 2009 and the process took 6-7 years to complete. Dr. Perry is quick to state “ my career has placed me in positions to deal with all types of people, people with diverse economic backgrounds.” Dr. Perry considers those relationships to be deals of a lifetime, “power moves,”

while he swiftly notes that he is not one to judge. As a Harlemite, Diddy opened the Capital Preparatory Harlem School based on the low-quality education in the area and the weakness of the Board of Education. Diddy held a deep admiration for Mr. Geoffrey Canada (former President of Harlem’s Children’s Zone and community activist) located in Harlem. Dr. Perry is a powerful educator who is also has a reputation of being a passionate, extremely caring educator, motivational speaker, mentor, television news correspondent, and outspoken advocate for at-risk youth and their families.

Capital Preparatory Harlem School (“CPHS”) opened their doors in 2016 and offers a free education to at-risk underprivileged youth. CPHS

currently has a rising success rate in terms of academ-

ics-their reading and math scores; they have tripled since

opening in 2016 and continue to climb in grades 6th-9th and within 3 years the school will house up to 12th grade. Classes at the school are year-round and it’s working hard at offering mentoring opportunities for the community. Dr. Perry takes pride in not calling the educators teachers; they are titled as “Illuminators” because they light the path for their students.

Diddy makes surprise visits and Dr. Perry admits, “The students have some incentives from Diddy, such as sports jerseys, concert tickets etc.” The school’s mission is to assist their students in becoming respectable citizens and public servants; hip-hop 101 is not a covered curriculum.

Mr. Combs has donated $1 million dollars to build another charter school in the South Bronx; a location is currently under review. We may not see their capes, as these two heroes choose to wear a shinny suits and a bow tie; they can’t and won’t stop. stop!

E

l San Juan City Island on 5th Avenue is one of the newest restaurants to grace the streets of the village of Harlem that is located at 1429 Fifth Avenue in between 116th and 117th Streets that is owned by life-long New Yorkers Manny and Josie Vidal.

The restaurant opened with a soft launch three months ago; it is now open and ready to serve patrons seven days a week. The Vidals are very excited about investing in this community that they hold so near and dear. Husband Manny was born a few blocks away at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital and both he and wife Josie grew up in East Harlem. Together they raised three daughters and a son in NYC. Throughout the years the family treasured their

trips to City Island where they enjoyed the fresh seafood meals along with the relaxed family style dining experience. The Vidals decided to recreate this style of dining experience at their restaurant, El San Juan City Island on 5th Ave to share it with you. The Vidals are active restaurant owners whose goal is to provide you with great food that is a fusion of Latin and Soul: Puerto Rican food, seafood and American favorites with menus developed by the owners and the restaurant’s highly experienced chef. Under their watchful eye the front of the house staff provides great service with a real sense of family.

El San Juan City Island on 5th Ave is open for breakfast and lunch Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 am until 3 pm and for din-

ner Mondays through Sundays from 4 pm until 11 pm.

Their weekday happy hour with bar specials run from 4 pm until 8 pm. On Sundays they host a Champagne brunch from 12 pm until 4 pm for $34.99. The restaurant is available for private events so please call to speak with the manager; it has seating capacity for 200 guests and takeout is available as well.

Diners can enjoy fresh seafood in their signature dishes like paella, fried shrimp and authentic Latin dishes like chicharron de pollo, mofongo with shrimp, oxtails with rice and beans or tostones. I personally attended a private event at El San Juan last month. I dined on the

steak and onions with rice and beans and the food was amazing, so well-seasoned and the steak was so tender; it was good to the last bite.

It was a crowded event and I saw all hands-on deck; even the manager assisted

the wait staff; they worked as a cohesive team.

Comedy night is on the first Monday of every month and Salsa night is every Wednesday night with a top DJ. The Vidals plan on adding on more

live music and singing as the business grows and the clientele responds to their offerings, so there’s more to come. Come spend part of this holiday season with the Vidals at El San Juan City Island on 5th Ave.

I

n the beginning, the Golden Life Ministry was the new kid on the block among a multitude of ministries at The Abyssinian Baptist Church, pastored by the Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III. Launched under the leadership of Marcella Maxwell, PhD, Greater New York Links, Inc., it has catapulted into senior soirees of health and wellness.

As Dr. Maxwell promised, her mission to enlighten seniors by bringing experts, products and the best from medical practices to speak to seniors, would be ongoing. Seniors in and out of the church have shown up at her beck and call in anticipation of what sources of information and guidelines would unfold.

On October 31, 2018, the focus was on eyes and their relationship to our overall health. The morning as usual, began at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast. By 9:30, the program opened with welcome remarks by Dr. Maxwell and the introduction of presenters by Michelle D. Stent, Esq., GNY Links, Inc. First up was, Samuel L. Guillory, MD, Ophthalmologist, Associate Clinical Professor, Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center. Guillory said, “You can learn all about the body through the eyes.”

His focus of practice includes: Ocular Sonography; Pediatric Ophthalmology; Surgery for cataracts, corneal defects, strabismus surgery (correction of cross-eyes); LASIK refractive for myopia

Many seniors have floaters, small flecks visible on the retina. They’re part of a gellike substance in the back of the eye called the vitreous that begins to liquefy with age and the inside of the eyeball becomes crowded with debris and deposits. Sometimes the vitreous fibers can pull some of the retinal nerve cells with them; flashes in the

The Lighthouse Guild (Lighthouse for the Blind) has grown beyond the blind, into Primary care/internal medicine; Behavioral health, Endocrinology (diabetes specialist); Vision rehabilitation; Nephrology and Neurology (treatment for migraines); Podiatry; Physical and Occupational therapies, into a full health center.

Patricia Butts, First Lady of The Abyssinian Church thanked the presenters and guests and added a spin to the eye-situation, “We want to look into the eyes of a person to ascertain what road we want to take with them.”

The Greater Links of New York, Inc. provided a fullcourse buffet lunch. The day ended on a high note, chewing and chatting about all we had learned about our eyes in such a short time. What’s next, Dr. Maxwell? We look forward to all that you can share with seniors who want to be in the know in order to live their best life. Knowledge is power!

Y

ou are the strongest person you know.

You can lift and carry a lot of weight and many burdens, because strength comes from within as well as from muscles.

So what are you capable of doing when times get strange? Place yourself in the short stories inside “Friday Black” by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, and see.

Emmanuel had grown up with a strength his parents nurtured.

They taught him everything they knew about keeping a young Black man alive; because of that, Emmanuel rarely presented his “Blackness” at the top of a one-

to-ten scale. At most, he kept it somewhere near the middle. But in “The Finkelstein 5,” when a white man was acquitted of killing five black kids with a chainsaw, Emmanuel doubted if he was strong enough to keep his Blackness at anything less than a “10.”

Anything less than the blunt truth is a bad thing in “The Era,” and Ben knows it. He was not “optimized” at birth, however, so no matter how truthful he is, he’ll never be as cool as some of the boys in his “HowItWas class.” He’ll never make anyone happy, and that’s fine. He’ll get by because the New Federation makes sure every-

one has access to a daily syringe full of Good. Ben gets his at school every day. He wishes he could get more. He’s in danger of becoming a “shoelooker” and it will take strength to avoid that.

very implausible at all, and moves toward the dystopian before slyly commenting on greed and American consumerism. If that sounds like a two-ton book, well, you’re almost right: most of these tales are hefty, but they’re also infinitely entertaining and irresistible. Reading them is like nibbling at futuristic fiction, but the future is tomorrow.

For a fan of stickwith-you stories, this book is a winner. It’s perfect for readers who don’t want the same old thing, or want something quick to read. If you’re looking for an early gift to give, “Friday Black” is a pretty strong bet.
