MIKE BLOOMBERG Dear Reader, Thank you for taking the time to learn about The Greenwood Initiative.

As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have been possible in America — and that’s true. But I also know that because of the artificial barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white.

Building Generational Wealth for Black Families is Critical. That’s why I launched The Greenwood Initiative in Tulsa last month. I visited the site of the Black Wall Street Massacre, where a white mob decimated the prosperous community of Greenwood. It is to the memory of the lost lives and promise of Greenwood that we’ve dedicated The Greenwood Initiative: a plan to address the systematic bias that has kept Black Americans from building wealth.

THE GREENWOOD PLAN WILL: • Create 1 million new Black homeowners • Double the number of new Black-owned businesses • Invest $70 billion in the country’s 100 most disadvantaged neighborhoods

Fixing the System for Black Families. When I was mayor of New York, I was proud to take on the systematic inequality that held back too many New Yorkers. We increased education funding, built 650 new schools and raised Black graduation rates to record highs. We led an ambitious effort to reduce poverty and managed the largest amount of affordable housing in the nation. And as President, I will work even more aggressively to combat inequality nationwide.

In March, Celebrate Women Who Are Making a Difference By: Erin Lewenauer

T

he dynamic month of March brings with it snow that turns to rain, longer days, eventually Spring, and a month-long celebration of Women’s History. Women’s History Month recognizes the contributions of women throughout history and in contemporary society. It is celebrated annually in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

International Women’s Day falls on March 8th and during October in Canada, corresponding with the celebration of Persons Day on October 18th.

The first International Women’s Day was in 1911 and in 1978 the schools in Sonoma, California

participated in Women’s History Week. In 1979, following a 2 week conference about women’s history at Sarah Lawrence College (co-sponsored by the Women’s Action Alliance and the Smithsonian Institution), they began similar celebrations within their communities. President Jimmy Carter declared National Women’s History Week in 1980. The proclamation stated, “From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first

American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well. As Dr. Gerda Lerner has noted, ‘Women’s History is Women’s Right.’” By 1986,

14 states had declared March “Women’s History Month” and in 1988, U.S. presidents issued annual proclamations recognizing the month of March as Women’s History Month.

You can honor the enormous accomplishments of women with numerous events throughout March in New York City.

The Interchurch Center (61 Claremont Ave.) celebrates its 60th anniversary on March 19th, many years of offering continuous service to its neighboring residents and beyond. They will convene and recognize the leading ladies of Harlem from the nonprofit and faith-based sectors. Dr. Lakeesha Walrond, the first woman to lead the NYTS, will be

the keynote speaker.

Throughout March, Poe Park Visitor Center in the Bronx will feature women graffiti and street artists who exhibit their powerful art. There is a meet and greet with the artists as well. On March 7th at Mosholu Ave. and Broadway in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx you can learn how to see through the eyes of a naturalist, as you walk with the Urban Park Rangers along the 1.4-mile nature trail named in honor of longtime Bronx resident and naturalist Cass Gallagher. Also on March 7th at Athena Statue in Athens Square in Queens you can travel with the Urban Park Rangers as they highlight Marie Curie,

Gertrude Waldeyer, and other significant women in Queens. On March 12th at Morris-Jumel Mansion in Roger Morris Park in Manhattan Professor Katherine Manthorn will explore the interconnected lives of 2 influential women from the 19th Century New York, Eliza Jumel and Eliza Pratt Greatorex. On March 14th at the Grand Army Plaza in Central Park in Manhattan, they say some made music, some made noise, all made a difference; there, celebrate women who broke records, broke ground, and blazed trails. Queens Boro Hall to Open 2020 Census Resource Assistance Center

cting Borough President Sharon Lee announced the 2020 Census Resource Assistance Center at Queens Borough Hall will open to the public beginning Thursday, March 5, offering Queens residents the ability to access Census outreach materials, ask questions of trained volunteers and apply for 2020 Census-related jobs. Borough President Lee also continues to accept applications from not-forprofits interested in receiving state funding for Census outreach efforts in Queens.

“It’s all hands on deck for the 2020 Census,” said Borough President LEE. “We must ensure every single Queens resident – of every age and regardless of documentation status – is count-

ed. When we are not counted, we are rendered invisible and irrelevant for our fair share of federal representation and funding. An undercount is something the Borough of Families simply cannot afford. The future of our county, city and state depend on a full and accurate 2020 Census count.”

From March 5 through July 31, the 2020 Census Resource Assistance Center at Queens Borough Hall (2nd Floor) will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 AM to 6 PM. On hand to assist visitors to the Center will be Queens Borough President’s Office staff and trained volunteers from Borough President Lee’s Queens Complete Count Committee (Queens CCC), a group of over 100 trusted community leaders and groups charged with devel-

oping outreach strategies and maximizing participation in the 2020 Census.

Electronic devices will be available at the Center for residents to fill out the nine-question Census form online upon its launch on March 12, while U.S. Census Bureau resources in more than a dozen languages will be available for visitors to take home and distribute to family, friends and neighbors. No appointments are necessary and walk-ins are welcome.

A controversial citizenship question will not be on the 2020 Census, following a decision by the United States Supreme Court last year to block such a question from being included.

Documentation status will have no bearing on any resident’s ability to fully complete and submit a Census questionnaire.

which dubiously reported the borough’s population rose by only 1,300 people over the prior decade — then-Borough President Melinda Katz first hosted a Census Town Hall at Borough Hall in November 2018 to propel public discourse and engagement for the 2020 Census.

In January 2019, then-Borough President Katz announced the formation of the Queens CCC, later hosting both a Queens Job Fair for the 2020 Census and a Public Hearing with the New York State Complete Count Commission in May 2019.

Then-Borough President Katz also signed an amicus brief sent to the United States Supreme Court, along with nearly 200 other elected officials from around the country, opposing the federal government’s attempt to

include a discriminatory citizenship question on the 2020 Census — an effort to weaponize the Census to dilute resources, representation and minority voting power that the Supreme Court ultimately blocked.

Under the leadership of Borough President Lee, the Office of the Queens Borough President has worked to connect Queens not-for-profits with New York State funding grants for Census outreach, while the Queens CCC has remained steadfast in its community outreach efforts to ensure all Queens families are counted once the 2020 Census begins later this month.

ifty-five years ago, music changed forever.

In 1965, pop music’s most celebrated and dynamic dynasty was born when five brothers from Gary, Indiana formed The Jackson 5.

With hits like “I’ll Be There,” “The Love You Save” and “I Want You Back,” the brothers Jackson took the world by storm. Their trailblazing act set the stage for music’s single most influential artist — the King of Pop: Michael Jackson.

While the Jackson 5 never won a Grammy, Michael would eventually dominate all awards and shatter every re-

cord known to music.

With hits too numerous to recite and including “Off the Wall,” “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “Bad,” and “Man in the Mirror,” Michael’s solo accomplishments remain unchallenged, for he was not only idolized by fans but considered a star among all other celebrities.

To put in perspective, the praise heaped upon Michael, think Beyoncé and add 100 times or more to that.

However, it should not be mistaken, whatever the Jackson 5 — who were later rebranded as The Jacksons — lacked in awards, they more

As far as talent, it wasn’t all Michael.

On stage, Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon, and even Randy proved as talented as any pop star. That’s far from hyperbole.

“This guidance statement is just that -- guidance. Clinical recommendations may not apply to every patient or all clinical situations,” says Dr. McLean. “That’s why patient-physician relationships and shared-decision making are so important.”

Nissan welcomes African American students for leadership and education summit

uring the 2020 Next Gen Summit, high school students from six cities across the country − Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Jackson (Miss.), Nashville and Washington, D.C. − met with Nissan leaders and participate in workshops to prepare themselves for a successful future.

The students were selected through a process that includes a recommendation from their school, resume submission and an interview with representatives from their local chapter of 100 Black Men of America. Students with the most robust resume and interview skills were invited to attend the 2020 Nissan Next Gen Summit, sponsored by Nissan.

he immune system is one of the most critical purveyors of our physical wellness. It’s your defense system that protects our body from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. A healthy immune system can distinguish between harmful unwanted

pathogens and our own healthy cells and tissue.

The world is now experiencing a pandemic coronavirus strain that the World Health Organization (WHO) has named COVID-19. The alarming concern about COVID-19 is it has been designated as a communal coronavirus meaning that infection can come from human to human. Experts are saying it will take a year to a year in a half for Big Pharma to create a drug that can address COVID-19.

A strong immune system is our first line of defense against any coronavirus strain that invades our body. COVID-19 at this stage of its development seems to be reacting similar to other coronaviruses like

colds and the Flu. Most of the people who have died or have become critically ill have had weak or challenged immune systems.

I believe the reason why healthy children in China and other COVID -19 infected countries have not suffered as much as adults is because children in most cases have less stress than adults. Stress can be traced to over 80% of illness in America. Stress weakens the immune system.

In the mid-‘80s scientific research discovered that our immune system ishighly intelligent. It became known as “a floating brain” because of the ability of immune cells to participate in chemical messages sent by the brain throughout the body.

This scientific acknowledgement became the foundation for the spiritual-science movement. A time when scientific research began to explain why spiritual wellness practices such as meditation, Tai Chi, Kigong, Qigong and other internal immune building techniques work to improve wellness.

Negative thinking, fear, doubt and anger will weaken your immune system, and this is no time to have a weak immune system.

There are many external natural immune building products and services that you should consider, I will make a few suggestions later.

The most important point in all of this is that nature is selective, those who

are not aware of their ability to straighten their immune system and how to prepare it to do battle with invading pathogens may find themselves on the negative side of the next stage of human development.

Just think, Sweetie, Pretty, you were minding your business before this monkey business started. And just know, by reading “Stop Telling Women to Smile” by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, that others deal with it, too.

Like many women, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh spent her teen years in public “not wanting to be seen.” Catcalls, creepy comments, unwanted compliments about her young body followed her from street to sidewalk, coming from men who made

her feel afraid, ashamed, and definitely harassed. The “sheer quantity” of it struck her as she got older and in 2012, Fazlalaizadeh, a street artist, started a movement she calls Stop Telling Women to Smile.

As part of her work, she invites women to her studio to tell their stories as she sketches their portraits.

Some of her results are in this book – and they’re powerful.

The most common response to street harassment, she says, is anxiety, a lingering dread of what could happen – physical violence, stalking, emotional terror – whether one interacts with a harasser or not. For many women, harassment becomes

Says Fazlalizadeh, men who engage androgynous women in unwanted ways “are particularly likely to harass masculine women” out of a false sense of their own masculinity; they’re also likely to harass trans women because they feel “tricked” by a trans body. Women of color receive “markedly different” harassment from white men than from men of their own races. Pregnant women receive unwelcome touches, as though they’re good-luck charms; and Muslim women are verbally attacked for their clothing.

And who can women “go to for protection” if the harasser is a police officer?

Fazlalizadeh says that

she sees hope for today’s children, who are raised learning not to harass – but beyond that, the solution “is a large question that can have many answers.”

Give yourself a minute to skim through “Stop Telling Women to Smile,” and it may seem like the book is little more than same-but-different which, after awhile, is too homogeneous and overgeneralizing.

Dig a little deeper, though, and this book opens like a flower with pages of emotion, outrageous tales, anger, unwarranted shame, and a chapter for feminist men that could spell welcome change.

izadeh makes this book feel like a raw gallery performance, and it shouts with power but not a lot of caution. Some of the “What Women Want to Say to Street Harassers” sidebars come off as advice, and safety isn’t stressed nearly enough there.

There’s strength in Fazlalizadeh’s words and they’re stand-up-and-scream inspiring, but they just need a hair more prudence.

And yet: this is an invaluable book for any women’s group, it’s a great launching point for conversations with teens of any gender, and parents will absolutely want to read it. For that, for them, “Stop Telling Women to Smile” is worth a look-over.
