NNPA Honors Black Lives Matter Founder

A

licia Garza said she’s “super excited” about being named the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) 2019 Newsmaker of the Year, an award she’s scheduled to receive on Thursday, March 21, in Washington, D.C., during Black Press Week.

“I’ll say it’s really humbling when the community reaches out and lifts you up for the work you and your team is doing to make black people powerful,” said Garza, one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Garza, who coined the term “Black Lives Matter,” is an Oakland-based organizer, writer, public speaker and freedom fighter who also serves as the special

projects director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance which stands as the nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in America, according to Garza’s online bio.

Along with Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors, Garza founded the Black Lives Matter network which is recognized globally for its focus on combatting anti-Black state-sanctioned violence and the oppression of all Black people.

Since the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, Garza has become a powerful voice in the media with articles and interviews appearing in publications like Time, Essence, and the New York Times.

“Power means getting to

make decisions over your own life,” Garza told NNPA Newswire.

“It means being able to determine where resources go and who they go to and where they don’t go and who they don’t go to,” she said.

Additionally, Garza said power is about making sure that there are consequences where needed, including at the polls.

“The power at the polls means that selecting a leader that will take our concerns and experiences into account because they are shaping policy and shaping culture in the United States and there are so many different barriers for Black people,” Garza said.

“For 2020, it’s still yet to be seen what’s on the table for Black people and [her latest empowerment nonprofit] Black Futures Lab will be working had to make

sure candidates are speaking directly to the issues we care about and are listening to the proposals we have,” she said.

Garza’s Black Futures Lab works with Black people to transform communities, building Black political power and changing the way that power operates – locally, statewide, and nationally, she said.

“The problems facing Black communities are complex. The solutions to these problems will come from our imagination, our innovation, and experimentation,” Garza said.

“Changing our communities for the better requires changing a culture that takes Black people for granted and changing policies and laws that make us criminals and keep resources from our communities, she said.

Still, the Black Lives Matter movement is “alive and well,” Garza said.

“Today, Black Lives Matter is an organization with over 40 chapters in four countries, and it is the civil rights movement of our generation,” she said.

“I think what we’ll see in the next year and next few years is Black Lives Matter moving into electoral politics and policy,” Garza said.

In addition to the NNPA Newsmaker of the Year Award, the activist and visionary has received numerous other accolades and rec-

ognition including the 2016 Glamour Women of the Year Award, the 2016 Marie Claire New Guard Award, and as a Community Change Agent at the 2016 BET Black Girls Rock Awards.

“Certainly I was motivated by my mom who is really a powerful and multi-talented Black woman who made a way out of no way,” Garza said.

“I’ve also been motivated by the hundreds of thousands of Black people who have come along on this journey for the past six years,” she said.

NNPA Celebrates Black Press Week

he National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) kicked off Black Press Week in Washington, D.C., with a welcome reception at the Dupont Circle Hotel.

Celebrating 192 years of the Black Press, the NNPA Foundation and NNPA’s member publishers engaged in several workshops throughout the week that centered on this year’s theme: “Publishing, Power & Purpose.”

Among the highlights of the annual Black Press Week, which ran from March 20 to March 22, was the enshrinement of two publishers into the Black Press Archives and Gallery of Distinguished Black Publishers.

Additionally, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton (D-D.C.) was recognized for her lifetime of service and Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza received the NNPA 2019 Newsmaker of the Year Award.

“It’s such an honor to be recognized by the Black Press in this manner,” Garza

said. “What we do is for the people, to benefit the people,” she said.

That Impact the Quality of Life for Black Americans and Wells Fargo presented “Minding the Wealth Gap.” The special week of activity concluded with a luncheon presentation and library tour at the Library of Congress which had the theme, “The Black Press in the United States: History, Legacy and Heritage,” co-hosted by Dr. Carla Hayden, the 14th Librarian of Congress and the first African American to hold the post.

“Looking For Leroy”: Black Theatre At Its Best!

ooking For Leroy is a magnificent production that is only playing through Sunday at the Castillo Theatre at 543 W 42nd Street. Produced

by Woodie King, Jr.’s New Federal Theatre, it is a brilliant, riveting play by playwright Larry Muhammad, that not only looks at who playwright Amiri Baraka

was, aka Leroy Jones and the plays he wrote, but it shares information on the names and works of other phenomenal Black playwrights. The audience learns who paved the way for the Baraka’s of the world and sets up the foundation to say that Black playwrights have a duty to their community to be the voice of their people.

Black experiences better than Black playwrights?

Playwrights can be revolutionist like Baraka and Ed Bullins or they can be people who chronicle our story in this country like the late, great August Wilson.

There are so many phenomenal playwrights that we can claim as a people who have always been able to capture what is happening in

the Black community or being done to the Black community by society and to find a way to present it that the public can digest. The ability of Black playwrights and Black Theatre is something to be proud of and in awe of and this production lets the audience feel those things.

This is a very important play and it needs to be experienced, whether you are

a partaker of Black Theatre or not. I absolutely was mesmerized by the information shared in this piece.

Kim Sullivan superbly captures Baraka and delivers her performance with unparalleled passion, energy and spirit! Tyler Fauntleroy is tremendous in the role of Taj, a college student who is interning for Baraka.

Fauntleroy brings the fire

when necessary and shows all the sides of this multi-dimensional character. Petronia Paley’s direction is nothing less than perfect! Go, go, go to see “Looking For Leroy” you will be glad you did. It is a gift that eloquently captures the essence of what Black Theatre represents in this country and the impact of it on our lives. It’s Black Theatre at its best!

ave you used any of these excuses to avoid physical activity? “I don’t have time.” “It’s too hot.” I’m too out of shape.” “I’m too old.” “I’m too fat.”

“Other people will laugh at me.” “I can’t afford a gym.” “I don’t like gyms.” “I’ll mess up my hair.” “I don’t like sweating.” “I’m too tired.” I’ll be in more pain.” “I’ll start tomorrow.” “I need to finish my family stuff before I do anything just for me.” “I know what to do, I just don’t feel like it.”

Sometime after getting my Masters

in Recreation Administration, personal training certification, group exercise certification, continuing to play tennis, and completing my research on barriers and benefits of physical activity for older African-Americans and older Latinos, I came to several realizations. First, I was making excuses and lots of them. It’s hard to hold up that mirror and examine yourself. That painful, examination forced me to ask, and answer, hard questions. Letting existing research, my own research, and personal experience

guide me, I found my weight loss path from 175 to 145 pounds from December 2015 to June 2016. Now, over age 40, I wake up with less pain.

My highest weight was 190 pounds, pre-baby weight was 135 pounds, and consumptions habits (nutrition/food & beverage intake) played a critical role in shedding the pounds.

Those are topics for other columns and we’ll get to them.

2019 Uptown Women Business Owners Honored

arlem’s longtime women business owners were recognized for their courage to own a business in Harlem for more than 20 years at Harlem News annual event that brings hundreds of Uptown’s women business owners together.

About 300 attended the annual Uptown Women Business Owners luncheon and photo shoot Thursday,

The event was hosted by the Harlem Community Newspapers, Inc. and sponsored by title sponsor HealthFirst, along with co-sponsorship by the Women Chamber of Commerce. The event also inducted the latest honorees into the “Women of Courage Awards,” which recognizes women business owners who have operated businesses Uptown for 20 years or more.

The entrepreneurs came from across a broad spectrum of industries, from café owners to attorneys – and even a massage parlor madam turned playwright.

Jeff Ross, director of sales for HealthFirst said the nonprofit insurance provider was thrilled to help recognize the women whose businesses helped to transform Harlem into the world-class neighborhood that it has become.

“We’re proud to support women of color doing big things in the community for members of the community across the board,”

Ross said.

Stevenson also encouraged the attendees to patronize each other’s businesses and many attendees used the day to network with their fellow peers in the business community.

The event kicked off with a continental breakfast and welcome remarks from Harlem Community News publisher Pat Ste-

venson. Next, each participant got up and introduced themselves and their business to the audience.

The guests were then treated to a raffle, a gift bag and a catered lunch before posing for a group photo.

Each of the 21 honorees received the “Woman of Courage” award, a letter of Appreciation from Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Citation

from state Assemblywoman Inez Dickens.

kay, I’ve talked about implementing a self-re-improvement program, stressed the importance of checkups, exercise and changing your eating habits, but I haven’t spoken about “spring cleaning.”

Here in New Yorkwhere I live, everyone is enjoying the fact that winter is now officially gone.

You see, spring signals the beginning of our sum-

mer season! Traditionally, spring means the renewal of nature: flowers start to bloom, trees sprout new shiny green leaves, the birds start to sing again, etc . . . If you live in a warmer climate, I know that during your “winter” flowers still bloom, birds always sing and trees are basically green and your climate, warm. Regardless of where we live, everyone looks forward to some kind

of “renewal” right about now. I’d like to suggest some “spring cleaning” ideas that have nothing to do with closets—so put your brooms down.

They say that soon everyone, not just the “techies”, will do everything from home: See first run movies, grocery shop, go to school. All of this will be very convenient but artificial and won’t get you out to enjoy nature and smell the roses. So before we get to that stage, bring nature into your home.

Attach flower boxes outside your windows so that you can enjoy the flowers both from inside and out, as well as their fragrance when you open the windows.

Parents, have you thought about “spring

cleaning” your kids? No, don’t put them out, but get them hyped now for summer camp or other activities—where they can have their own sense of renewal. Whether it’s a day camp, overnight or sleepaway; this is not only an opportunity to give them breathing space away from you, but to also treat yourself to a break. You could also inspire their social consciousness by working with them to select a non-profit camp for children with special needs (i.e. foster children, kids with debilitating illnesses), and have them contribute a portion of their allowance to help others have a wonderful summer experience.

You can also “spring clean” your “I would do it, but I don’t have time” wish list. Purge that list by

doing whatever it is that you keep putting off: finishing school, taking a trip or learning something new.

There is no renewal like the spiritual lift one gets from doing those things that enhance your life.

Either way, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all way for everyone to renew themselves through “spring cleaning”. But there is a way that fits you—find it by dusting off the cobwebs of your daily routine and really look at what will rejuvenate you . . . then after you’ve identified what that “thing” is, to quote a famous slogan: “Just do it.” Think about it. he six annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (HHWW) will begin on Saturday April 27th and continue to the following Saturday May 4th. The seven-day holistic wellness strategic marketing initiative has two main objectives the first is to provide a marketing platform for holistic wellness practitioners, businesses and organizations to collectively advertise and promote their services.

our mother dealt with things you can’t imagine.

It was a different time when she was your age, with societal issues you’d never tolerate and rules you wouldn’t abide. Same with your grandma: scrapbooks, history books and museums are the only places you’ll see what she lived. So what will your children know?

As in “Black is the Body” by Emily Bernard,what’s your story?

In 1994, while sit-

ting in a quiet coffee shop and wresting with a college paper she was writing, Emily Bernard was stabbed “in the gut” by a white man with a hunting knife. That’s her story

to tell and she’s recited it often in the last twodecades-plus, though it’s told differently by others who were there.

It’s a story that kicks off her book, but she insists that it does not define her.

Like any good story, though, there are catches to the telling.

Take, for instance, the way we deal with “the n-word.” And how Black women can sometimes hate their hair. And how we let “the absurd and illogical nature of American racial identity” tell us who we are or should be.

No, Bernard lets family do that.

Her husband is white, a fact that some in her mother’s fami-

ly hated – although they ultimately bonded with him through food, as though it were a new language.

Her grandmother disliked the Civil Rights Movement. Her mother died too young.

Bernard’s adopted twin daughters were born in Ethiopia and she calls them brown girls who are “’growing up in a house with a white person who loves them.”’ They, too, will have experiences their mother won’t have, and stories to tell.
