The recent worldwide protests demand no justice, no peace.

These words came out of NAN (National Action Network) headed

by Rev Sharpton. What is different this time is the cry for "Black Lives Matter" has taken on a worldwide voice from all races. In this age of cell phones and camera's everywhere these horid events are being filmed and posted on social media in real time. This is indeed a revolution,. the question is - will we accomplish enough change to rightt some of the wrong which has been done to Black People for decades. Conscientiousness has been raised. Now that everyone knows better, will we do better?

Black Lives Matter Founder Finds Hope in Global Protests Over George Floyd’s Alleged Murder

or Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza the global outpouring of protests and activism following the alleged murder of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody has been heartening and makes her hopeful for the future. At the same time, she said, “It’s bittersweet that it takes someone being murdered on camera

to get to the point of conversation that we’re in.”

“I was horrified,” Garza said of viewing the video of Floyd’s life being taken by a white police officer with his knee on Floyd’s neck.

“Every time a Black person is murdered by police there is something disturbing about it.” She added, said in this case, “just the callousness of it; and him calling for his

Garza, of Oakland, is Strategy and Partnerships Director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance and Principal at the Black Futures Lab. Seeing Black Lives Matter (BLM) signs held by protestors in all 50 states, including in many small towns with few Black residents, Garza said, “It’s humbling to see it and to have been a small part of it.” She is heartened that people are awakening.

Garza said she is also pleased that many celebrities who have large platforms are using them now to push for change.

She said the Black Futures Lab has a strategy for helping celebrities to use their platforms for the movement. “When they use their platforms to activate people, it’s an important way to save our democracy. It makes us active and engaged participants.”

people are really hungry for information. “We’ve been doing a lot of work and talk about what’s going on. When folk like Selena do that, it engages people in issues of our time. I plan to work with her through this election cycle.”

Garza said she will also be taking over Lady Gaga’s social media in the coming week.

“We’re really focused on transferring this energy into political power.”

She said it’s important to change the people who are making the rules and those who aren’t enforcing the rules. She cited as an example the election in Georgia this week where voters in predominantly Black areas waited hours to vote. Movement for Black Lives is not just about police violence. It’s about how Black lives are devalued. Black Lives Matter is for an opportunity for us to recognize and uphold the right to humanity and dignity for Black people. She said Black people also have to work “to remove the negatives we’ve internalized about ourselves.”

“For people who are not Black, there’s also work to do.” She said it’s

not only about changing the rules, but also about a culture shift. “That’s what I think we’re seeing now. It’s going to take all of us staying committed.”

She said the millions joining protests following the alleged murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Auberry and Breonna Taylor were sparked by, “a powder keg waiting to happen.”

“People are mad about a lot of stuff. We’re all tender right now. It’s an election year. We find ourselves in a global pandemic. The lack of human touch… and being able to gather. Because of that we also have the expansion of an economic crisis. Not only are people trying to stay healthy, they’re trying to pay their bills.”

“What we can all agree on is that policing is not serving the people that they’re supposed to serve. When we’re afraid of the police that’s not serving. Whenever I see tanks, rubber bullets, and tear gas being used — We pay for that. Are we keeping people safe?

We’ve been defunding the Black community for a long time.”

“Defund the Police” is a controversial slogan that has been held by some protestors. Garza said that slogan comes from the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition that includes BLM. “This work is something many organizations have been doing for many years,” she said.

“It’s really about getting a handle on how we’re spending our money.” She cited the fact that education funds have been cut, the postal service is near bankrupt, and thousands of homeless are living on the streets.

“We’re using police to deal with homeless.

You don’t send a nurse to deal with a drug cartel.”

“We did the largest survey of Black America in 2018 — The Black Census Project. The overwhelming majority said in the past six months they’d had a negative experience with the police.”

She said what she supports is “limiting the size, scope and role police play in our communities. Police also need consequences when harm is enacted. Police unions are a huge, huge issue. They block transparency for officers.”

Speaking of another campaign that’s getting national attention Project Zero’s “8 that Can’t Wait,” Garza cautioned, “We have to be wary of things that are a quick fix.”

She said, “8 Can’t Wait doesn’t deal with the real issue here, nobody should be above the law.”

“Public safety is not about bloated police budgets. It’s about expanding the safety net for Black people,” she concluded.

ayor Bill de Blasio recently announced the appointment of Magalie Austin as Senior Advisor and Director of the Mayor’s Office of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (M/ WBE). In this role, she will work to foster the success of minority and women-owned businesses and oversee the City’s M/WBE Program. Along with access to procurement opportunities, Austin will ensure that M/ WBEs also have access to services to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 as they recover from the

pandemic. Maggie Austin previously served as the Chief Diversity and Industry Relations Officer for the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC). While at DDC, she oversaw a massive in-

crease in the department’s M/WBE utilization.

“M/WBEs are the backbone of New York City’s economy,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “I am confident Maggie will continue on the important work we’ve done to ensure our M/ WBEs have what they need to thrive and that they are recognized for the essential role they play across the five boroughs.”

Racial divide of coronavirus is real, so are innovations that can help

ews about the novel coronavirus, which has now claimed over 100,000 American lives, is all around us. A subtext told in this reporting is the painful story of the pandemic’s devastating effect on people of color.

While coronavirus does not know boundaries of race, income, or ethnicity, its disproportionate impact on minority communities is unmistakable and points to a deeper crisis of racial disparities in health care that have persisted long before the onset of this disease.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study in Atlanta found that, in a cohort of 305 adults hospitalized with coronavirus, 83 percent were black. Similarly, in Washington, D.C., 80 percent of lives lost to coronavirus are black. Public health officials report that Latinx populations are overrepresented in coronavirus deaths, too.

There will be lessons gained from this pandemic, giving us the insights and motivation to build on new ways to deliver care. A renewed call to confront racial inequality in health care should be at the top of the list both for policymakers, the educational system, and health care itself.

As a former member of Congress who represented Philadelphia, the nation’s sixth-largest city with a minority population of over 60 percent (Schwartz), and the President of the National

Black Nurses Association, a health system administrator and educator of more than 40 years (Dawson), this is a subject close to our hearts.

Last year, we participated in a convening on racial disparities in health care hosted by Better Medicare Alliance that brought together representatives from the National Minority Quality Forum, NAACP, National Medical Association, members of the Congressional Black Caucus, and other health equity leaders.

While we could not have predicted the havoc that coronavirus would wreak on our health care system the following year, we find ourselves reflecting on the solutions discussed that can be brought to bear today.

This convening crystalized what we have already known: racial inequities elsewhere in our culture manifest today in the form of unconscious and conscious bias by health providers, lack of representation of minorities in high-level health professions, and lagging outcomes for minorities across the health care system.

Our institutions in health care are not powerless to take on these inequities – many already are. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) explained at the convening the steps being taken to ensure greater diversity in the physician workforce, while providers like ChenMed and Oak Street Health are directly

engaging minority communities and leveraging supplemental benefits to address health disparities.

We believe that Medicare Advantage – the managed care option in Medicare where more than 24 million seniors and Americans with disabilities receive coverage – highlights successful remedies for the inequities in health care that are deeply felt amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Increasing numbers of racial minorities are choosing Medicare Advantage for their health care needs. 57 percent of Latinx Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage and black seniors represent a higher proportion of beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage than in Traditional Medicare.

Black and Latinx seniors are more likely to be affected by health conditions that can heighten the risk of coronavirus-related complications. Black adults

are 20 percent more likely to have asthma, 72 percent more likely to be diabetic, and eight times as likely to be diagnosed with HIV than white adults. Tackling these chronic conditions and slowing disease progression is essential to protecting these individuals, future generations, and their communities from future health crises.

Medicare Advantage offers promising signs – with a 29 percent lower rate of avoidable hospitalizations among beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions, and a 73 percent lower rate of serious complications among the most clinically at-risk diabetics.

We also know that most seniors live on fixed incomes, including racial minorities who are more likely to experience poverty than white older adults. Medicare Advantage can help these vulnerable beneficiaries stay more financially secure, saving them near-

ly $1,600 a year in annual health expenditures compared to Traditional Medicare.

Consider, too, the impact of hunger and food insecurity that is exacerbated amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Even before this crisis took its toll, over 21 percent of black households struggled with food insecurity.

Medicare Advantage’s flexible benefit design offers tools to help. Nearly half of Medicare Advantage plans provide supplemental coverage for meal benefits and have stepped up in this moment of crisis to help get food in the hands of seniors in need.

These achievements do not happen by chance.

They are made possible by the unique incentives built into the framework of Medicare Advantage that reward the value of health services provided, rather than the volume. This allows for a greater focus on primary care, earlier clin-

ical interventions, supplemental benefits tailored to address social determinants of health, and lower costs to the patient and the health care system.

Medicare Advantage is not a panacea for the racial inequities that persist across our culture today, and there is more work to be done.

A report that followed our convening outlines sensible recommendations for reform — from required unconscious bias and cultural sensitivity training, to more accurate and actionable data to pinpoint where and how disparities occur.

Still, these successes offer us great hope that, even in this season of crisis, innovations are taking hold that can lead to a more just future in health care.

65th Annual Drama Desk Awards Recognizes “A Strange Loop,” “A Soldier’s Play” and more!

he 65th Annual Drama Desk Awards were held on Saturday evening and Black works and talent were recognized. “A Strange Loop” won for outstanding musical, it was presented by Playwrights Horizons and Page 73 Productions. The production’s writer, Michael R. Jackson received two Drama Desk Awards in the categories of outstanding book of a musical and outstanding lyrics.

Jackson tells his personal story as a large, gay, Black man and the issues he had with both his family accepting his lifestyle and his low-esteem, as he felt unattractive and unwanted

to gay men. Larry Owens won an outstanding actor in a musical. Stephen Brackett won for outstanding director of a musical.

It was amazing when it was announced that the Roundabout Theatre production of “A Soldier’s Play” with an explosive mainly Black cast that

started David Alan Grier and Blair Underwood and was directed by Kenny Leon won for play.

Broadway director extraordinaire Leon spoke of how much it meant to be part of this production, especially presented at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway. This has actually been a very exciting season for Leon. In the category of outstanding revival of a play, he was actually competing with himself, since he had also directed a stunning production of “Much Ado About Nothing” that was performed at the Delacorte’s Public Theatre.

It was no surprise to me or I’m sure to anyone who has seen “Tina: The

Tina Turner Musical” that Adrienne Warren won for outstanding actress in a musical as the music icon.

Martha Redbone won the Drama Desk for outstanding music in a play for The Public Theatre production of “for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf.”

A very powerful, moving production called “Halfway Bitches Go Straight to Heaven,” written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by John Ortiz, came away with a Drama Desk award for one of its extremely talented company members, Liza Colon-Zayas won outstanding actress in a play.

Drama Desk has a new award for Lifetime

achievement posthumously presented to the great Harold Prince and it is named after him the Harold Prince Award.

The phenomenal Audra McDonald presented the special awards for the evening. The Sam Norkin Award went to Mary Bacon. The Actors Fund, Seth Rudetsky, James Wesley and medical contributor Jonathan LaPook, M.D. were honored for keeping the theatre company connected and informed during the coronavirus crisis. The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit was honored for its 40-year history doing Shakespeare for free in prisons, homeless shelters and community centers. WP The-

ater and Julia Miles were honored for nurturing and producing works by female-identified creators.

Claire Warden, a pioneer in intimacy choreography was honored for her work.

She is part of the creative team of Intimacy Directors and Coordinators and Director of Engagement for and co-founder of Intimacy Directors International, which is helping to create theater experiences that are safer for performers and more authentic for contemporary audience.

It will be so wonderful when theater can finally begin again, safe of course. I can’t wait! Be safe and take care.

Black Wall Street 1906-1921: Freed Slaves Built Wealthy and Thriving Communities which were destroyed by white mobs

e are living in an historical, unprecedented moment of distress, anxiety and worldwide protests against police brutality and racial unrest. The fact that Trump has chosen to hold his first election rally on June 20th, one day after Juneteenth (June 19) a day celebrating the end of slavery, precisely in Tulsa, Oklahoma - that in 1921 was the scene of one of the worst race massacres in US history – denotes, to

say the least, a misguided disregard for both time and place and in the worst of hypothesis a calculated provocation. Neither of these possibilities are acts we would expect from the Commander in Chief, the person in charge of leading and uniting the country.

But let’s step back in history. Most of us know that on June 19th 1865 US Army General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas that the Civil War was over and slavery had ended. What we don’t necessarily know is that many African Americans were not made aware that, in reality, Congress had passed the 13th Amendment, which abolished

slavery, six months earlier.

So, slavery was now officially abolished…. but was it really? Freed slaves were never compensated for their stolen lives, their broken families, the free work produced, they were never given the opportunity of an equal start…they were never given the promised 4 acres and a mule.

Notwithstanding the lynching, the forced segregation, the Jim Crow laws and the redlining they

maintained their struggle, only to achieve an illusion of integration. Often starting from scratch, African Americans still managed to build families, homes, farms, companies, make discoveries and inventions (oftentimes appropriated by whites) build and rebuild many thriving African American communities.

The most well-known was located in Greenwood of Tulsa, Oklahoma and was named Black Wall Street.

This wealthy community was invaded, burnt to the ground and destroyed more than once by angry white mobs who started to fear the ingenuity and resilience of ex slaves. Nevertheless by 1942 some 242 black busi-

nesses were thriving again in the Greenwood district.

Next year will mark the 100-year anniversary of this terrible event so to better understand what happened in Tulsa, we talked to Mr. Michael Green - Actor, Producer and Director of the Shades of Truth Theatre - who has written a magnificent and informative play titled precisely ‘Black Wall Street’. What follows is an exclusive interview When was Black Wall

Street established and where did the name come from?

Booker T. Washington, who was a frequent visitor, first referred to Tulsa in that term. It is mostly associated with what was arguably the most successful black community ever established in the history of the United States: Greenwood of Tulsa, Oklahoma, circa 1906 - 1921 When did you first learn about Black Wall Street, did you study that in school?

I am glad you asked that question because, as a matter of fact, in school there was never mention of it, African American history wasn’t taught in depth at all.

I spent almost twenty years living in Houston Texas and had relatives from Tulsa Oklahoma and in fact had visited Tulsa on three occasions during the 80s…

Never a mention of Black Wall Street. It would take a visit to New York City in 1994 where, after attending a gathering which featured lectures by John Henrik Clark and Dr. Ben Jochannan, a vendor handed me a VHS tape with the title of Black Wall Street. I’m

thinking…what kind of fantasy is this? But in the spirit of what I had just received from the two Doctors of African History, I purchased the tape. Needless to say, I was absolutely flabbergasted and blown away at what was revealed on it.

How did Greenwood become so prosperous?

After the Civil War, Negro and Native Americans were able to acquire land lots through the Dawes Act. Now, accounts differ as to exactly when Oil was first discovered in Oklahoma but by 1907, just before Oklahoma became a state, it produced the most oil of any state or territory in the US. And with that came the emergence of Tulsa as “the

Oil Capital of the World.”

So, with oil and ingenuity and a little thing called segregation…Greenwood would rise to the top!!!

But how did it get started? OW Gurley moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma in 1906 shortly after Tulsa was established as a City. He purchased 40 acres of land and resold most of it to other blacks. These tracks of land were named Greenwood after the town in Mississippi. OW Gurley became the new Township's first wealthy entrepreneur.

Gurley started with a boarding house for African Americans. Then word began to spread about opportunities for blacks in Greenwood and men and families from all over the country flocked to the district. He would later be joined by a lawyer from Indiana named J B Stradford who moved to Greenwood and became a real estate mogul, investing and re-investing into the Town’s infrastructure. He built a luxury five-star ho-

tel that bears his name ‘The Stradford’. He believed that blacks had a better chance of economic progress if they pooled their resources. Both men had the vision to create something “for black people by black people”.

This is a fascinating story, but just how successful was it? There are great discrepancies and debate as to how successful was the Greenwood District. The most popular depiction states that within a 36-block radius there were over 600 thriving black-owned businesses, including 21 Churches, 21 Restaurants, 30 Grocery Stores, and 2 Movie Theaters. They ran a Hospital, a Bank, and their own School System. A minion of black professionals; Lawyers, Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Accountants, Bakers, Barbers, Butchers, Bricklayers, Plumbers, Domestics, Teachers, and other proud citizens lived in the beautiful homes constructed

by Negro Architects and Builders. The dollar circulated 36 to 100 times…unmatched in Black American History, even till today!!

How many people were murdered during the 1921 massacre?

The official count was listed as 300 but the actual number could have been 1000 or more. The property damage was staggering What happened afterwards? Did they rebuild?

Was it the same?

It was difficult to rebound and rebuild and the

City and State did everything they could to make sure that there would be no return to its former Glory.

With help from the NAACP, other black townships in Oklahoma, donations from black churches and a resilient Greenwood community it bounced back in part. However, some businesses like the Tulsa Star newspaper were permanently shuttered in the wake of the violence. The Greenwood District still exists today but after de-

cades of urban renewal and integration the area’s demographics and businesses resemble little of its storied past.

Were there other ‘Black Wall Streets’? The largest number of black townships established between 1865 and 1920 were located in Oklahoma, more than 50 in the state. But there were other successful towns all over the Country.

Juneteenth – June 19: A Celebration of the End of Slavery

slavery. In 1968, shortly after Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, his Poor People’s Campaign held a Juneteenth Solidarity Day, giving the holiday a new prominence in the civil rights movement.

In 1980, the Texas legislature made it an official state holiday. Currently, 46 states and the District of Columbia mark the occasion as a holiday or a day of observation.

But the holiday was still little known enough in 2017 outside the black community that the

television show “Black-ish” could build an episode around how few of the show’s white characters had heard of it.

In recent years, a number of Juneteenth commemorations were tied to themes raised by Black Lives Matter. Jack Dorsey made both Juneteenth a formal company holiday at both Twitter Inc. and Square Inc., both of which he leads. Vox Media Inc., Nike Inc., the New York Times and the National Football League all followed suit, while Facebook Inc. said it plans to cancel

meetings that day for a “day of learning” about the experience of black Americans. MasterCard said it would give employees the day off and encouraged them to educate themselves about the history of racism in America or volunteer with a civil rights organization. Twitter, in particular, has publicly leaned into the Black Lives Matter movement, changing the bio for its corporate Twitter account, where it has 58 million followers, to #BlackLivesMatter and changing its account photo to a black Twitter

logo.

As a result of mast protests around the world, Juneteenth is likely to gain more attention this

year and increased celebrations starting in 2021 which hopefully will be the end of social distancing and the Pandemic.

uneteenth is a celebration of Black history and freedom has been celebrated in the Black Community nationwide, including in Harlem for decades. The holiday gets its name from June 19, 1865. That’s the day the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that all African-American slaves in the state were free in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. The state was the last in the Confederacy to receive word that the Civil War was over and that slavery had been abolished, and the last where the federal Army established its authority.

As early as 1866, freed African Americans in Texas held a celebration on the date to commemorate the end of

resident Donald Trump decided to have his first political rally since the national COVID-19 lockdown in Tulsa Oklahoma. This event was scheduled to take place on June 19th in Tulsa Oklahoma. The date has now been changed to June 20.

After weeks of protest focused on racial injus-

tice in the wake of the death of George Floyd, Trump’s proposed rally has sparked a great deal of controversy and for some anger.

Many however are not aware of the history of Juneteenth and Tulsa.

On June 19th of 1865, Union army general Gordon Granger read orders in Galveston, Texas stating that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free. The Emancipation Proclamation was formally issued on January 1, 1863 freeing all enslaved Africans in the Confederate States of America. Texas was the most “remote” of the slave states. Be-

cause of this, enforcement of the proclamation took over two years before general Granger, along with union troops, arrived in Galveston on June 18 th 1865 to enforce it June 19th became the true date for the end of slavery. Also known as “Juneteenth,” “Freedom Day,” “Jubilee Day,” or “Cel-Libration” Day, it became the focus of celebrations for church-center communities in Texas and then across the nation.

“Juneteenth” is now recognized as a special day of observance in 47 states. There is a push for “Juneteenth

Independence Day'' to become a national holiday.

Many freed Africans became successful in business and politics. Schools and colleges were built which allowed more educational opportunities for African communities.

The Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma was the most wellknown. Greenwood is commonly known as the “Black Wall Street” due to the number of multimillionaires living there at the time.

The Greenwood community had its own hotels, banks, movie theaters and an outstanding school system. Many Greenwood homes had in-

door plumbing which was something that neighboring white communities did not have. On May 21st of 1921, based on an accusation made by a white woman that an African man assaulted her.

The Greenwood District of Tulsa was destroyed by gangs of white men leaving all the homes and businesses burned to the ground. Although Tulsa might have been the best-known affluent community destroyed by white gangs, over 80 affluent African communities were destroyed between 1918 and 1921.

There is an interesting connection between Tulsa’s history and President Trump’s

rally. Although the date has been changed to June 20th,it would seem that Tulsa Oklahoma, would have been the last place for Trump to have a “Make America Great Again” rally especially on June 19th.

The timing and location of Trump’s rally will undoubtedly provoke the many people who have been protesting for racial injustice across the country for the past three weeks. The Tulsa massacre was one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American history after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

With this knowledge in mind, America may be in store for a long, hot summer.

t. Mary’s Center Nursing Home in Harlem has partnered with students from Brooklyn’s PS 321 to create a pen pal alliance.

Because of Covid-19, St. Mary’s residents have been unable to have any visitors or even participate in communal groups or dining. While social distancing is necessary to protect the residents, who are considered high risk for infection, social isolation takes its toll and can lead to poorer health outcomes. Children are also struggling to adjust to a world with no playdates, no recess, no lunch with friends and often not even being able to see grandparents or other relatives.

At a time when everyone seems to be interacting via Zoom groups, Google meets and other forms of technology, the pen pal project has offered a more traditional form of social connection to the PS 321 students and the St. Mary’s residents: old fashioned, handwritten letters sent with a stamp. Many of the pen pals also included artwork or pho-

For Charlie, a second grader at PS 321, school closure on March 16th was the first in a series of steps separating him from his friends. On March 21st Governor Cuomo banned gatherings of any size, effectively eliminating playdates. On April 1st playgrounds closed and Charlie, an avid soccer player, could no longer go to the neighborhood field to kick a ball with his family and see other children playing at a distance.

When staff from St. Mary’s reached out to PS 321 parents Charlie was one of the first children to volunteer to be a pen pal. He was matched with Jefrey, a 58 year old resident at St. Mary’s and a former dancer who now uses a wheelchair. Jefrey and Charlie have already exchanged several letters and each considers the other a new friend.

“When I received his first letter I was in tears,” said Jefrey. “I was so happy. He has a dog named Roxy. He sent

pictures of himself. He likes ducks and birds. I’m just so excited.”

“His artwork is awesome,” he continued. “He goes to Prospect Park, he told me his whole story. I explained to him I’m wheelchair bound and he’s still comfortable with me.

I told him about the movies I was in. I found a friend.”

When I asked Charlie what he enjoyed most about being a pen pal he told me “I enjoy making art projects to send to my pen pal. And it’s exciting to get letters from him! I miss my friends and school right now but when I get a letter it makes me happy.“ He pointed out that he and Jefrey had some things in common. “My pen pal was a famous dancer. I don’t dance but I like to play soccer. We both enjoy writing letters!”

The project has been an educational one for Charlie as well. “I’m learning to spell new words and practice my handwriting. And I learned a new way to make a new friend.” Most importantly, though, “I don’t feel as lonely with a pen pal.”

ow is it that there’s never enough money?

No matter how much comes in, more goes out, even when you work hard, scrimp, and save.

You can’t keep doing this, don’t know how long you can keep your nose above water, and in the new book “The Business of Lovers” by Eric Jerome Dickey, you’ll do just about anything to make more money.

Brick never did mind being Penny’s driver.

He wasn’t working anyhow so when she asked for a ride to meet a “client,” he said he’d wait to be sure she

was okay. She threw a few bucks at him, he made sure she was safe, and it was all good. So when Penny brought two other women back to Brick’s car after one night at a high-end hotel, he suddenly had himself a “pace” of women, a full-time bodyguard job, and three part-time lovers-sometime-roommates.

He hadn’t meant to sleep with Penny in the beginning; she was in love with a cheater, though, and she needed comfort. Brick was captivated by Mocha Latte, who’d grown up on a Texas farm and wanted that life again, plus husband and kids. He was attracted to Christiana, the Cuban, who was so

bruised by the past that she could only look into the future.

It was Christiana who told Brick about the business; it was she who offered to set him up with rich women who wanted love on a single-night basis.

Not that he couldn’t use the money.

Some months before, Brick had fought cancer alone. He didn’t want his younger brother, André, to know about his problems; André had a career to manage. He didn’t want to tell his big brother, Dwayne, about his illness; Dwayne lost his job, had a teenage son and a baby-mama

who demanded more child support.

It was money that ended Brick’s last relationship.

Money that put him in strange women’s beds. What else would being broke cost him?

These days, there are three things you can count on for sure: The sun will rise tomorrow.

It’ll rain somewhere in the world. And author Eric Jerome Dickey will tell a good story.

This one is a little bit different, though.
