SPEED CAMERAS ARE To save lives, New York City is expanding its use of speed cameras.

On July 11th, the City will start issuing speed camera violations from 6 AM – 10 PM, Monday through Friday, year round. The City will operate speed cameras in 750 school speed zones. Expanding the speed camera law is one aspect of the City’s comprehensive plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. Learn more at nyc.gov/visionzero.

Chakshu Patel Joins The Studio Museum in Harlem

T

he Studio Museum in Harlem is pleased to announce the appointment of Chakshu Patel as its Director of Institutional Advancement. She began her position on June 17, working with Director and Chief Curator Thelma Golden and colleagues across the institution to secure the support necessary to realize the Studio Museum’s vital mission.

The Studio Museum is currently in the largest campaign in its fifty-year history, for the purpose of funding construction of its new building designed by Adjaye Associates in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, providing an operating reserve, and increasing the endowment.

The campaign to date has proceeded strongly, with

contributions from public and private donors enabling the Museum to commence the first major phase of the building project. Patel will build on this success, leading the strategic direction, management, leadership and implementation of the Museum’s capital and annual fundraising initiatives.

Patel comes to the Studio Museum from Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), where she most recently served as Vice President in the Strategy Office. Prior to that, she served as the National Director of Foundation Relations and Donor

Communications at PPFA. Under Patel’s leadership, the department experienced significant growth in both its revenue and the number of its full-time staff. In particular, her work focused on raising funds for key organizational strategic initiatives.

Before joining PPFA, Patel was a practicing attorney, who worked at the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project and in private practice.

Patel holds a JD from New York University School of Law, where she graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, and a BA in Women’s Studies from Drew University. She serves on the Board of the Embankment Preservation Coalition, a nonprofit organization working with the City of Jersey City to preserve a half-mile-long elevated railway for a habitat-oriented linear park.

QUEENS KICKS OFF PRIDE MONTH WITH FLAG INSTALLATION IN FRONT OF BOROUGH HALL

B

orough President Melinda Katz, in conjunction with Queens Pride, commissioned the first-ever installation of Pride flags in front of Queens Borough Hall on the eve of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month.

The Pride flag represents the LGBTQIA+ movement and will remain on display throughout the month of June in honor of

Pride Month and in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion of 1969.

“The Borough of Queens is unabashedly Pride — all day, every day,” said Borough President KATZ. “During LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and throughout the year, let us be loud, vocal, united and relentless both in celebration of Pride and in our

universal push for inclusion, equality and justice.”

s I go about my work of helping communities revitalize and reinvent themselves, I often get to see the best of America and I’m reminded that the foundations that built this country are still just as important today.

It’s long been said that America is all about rugged individualism, and that is true to some extent. Yes, being as self-sufficient as you can be is an admirable trait, but it only takes one so far. People need people in order to really live and nowhere is that more true than in communities.

Back when our ancestors landed on our shores, they didn’t head off into the woods to build a log cabin singlehandedly. No, they banded together in small communities. They worked together, struggled together, cried together, and celebrated together. They shared what they had when they could—and expected others to do the same for them when they needed help.

Early Americans had to live this way. Otherwise, they

would never have survived in this unfamiliar, unforgiving land.

Today, something very similar is happening. We’re in the middle of a massive community revitalization movement. Across America, cities and towns of all sizes are looking to reinvent themselves after a long, hard recession and several chaotic decades that turned their world upside town.

For many communities, globalization and technology reshuffled the deck. Much like our forefathers and foremothers, people found themselves lost in uncharted territory. Jobs disappeared.

Unemployment skyrocketed. Infrastructure crumbled.

Once-bustling downtowns deteriorated. Young people moved away in search of better lives (and who can blame them).

Now, we’ve collectively decided to look homeward.

We’ve decided to bring our communities back from the brink. And we’re not doing it as a nation of rugged individuals. We’re doing it in

small, tight-knit groups as we embrace the spirit of cooperation, collaboration, and partnership.

Community leaders, business owners, and citizens are deeply engaged and working together to breathe new life into our downtowns. We’re encouraging entrepreneurs to start new ventures. We’re choosing to eat, drink, play, and shop locally. We’re showing up at street festivals, volunteering, and supporting the institutions that feed, educate, and heal our community.

As I look to communities that are thriving, one thing is for certain. We are still the land of opportunity. People are finding they can still start a business, make a living, and provide jobs to others. While a strong local government is part of every vibrant community, in most cases private industry is the backbone.

Thriving local business communities lead to long-term prosperity.

So here’s what I believe: Real independence is about working hard, playing hard, building strong relationships with family and friends, and being happy in the place we’ve put down our roots.

It’s about choosing the kind of life we want to live. For the most part, this can exist only in the context of community.

This Independence Day, I hope you’ll take a moment to be grateful for your community and reflect on what you might do to make it better.

Get involved. Find a cause that speaks to you. Share your ideas. Join together with like-minded neighbors and work to make something happen.

The spirit of community is the spirit that built America.

And it’s what will rebuild us as we work together to create our future.

“Toni Stone” Is Enlightening And Inspiring

T

here is history being revealed at the Laura Pels Theatre Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center For Theatre on W 46th Street, where Lydia R. Diamond’s “Toni Stone” is currently playing through July 7. If you thought you knew baseball history, did you know the first woman to play in the professional Negro Leagues. Well, her name was Toni Stone and Diamond gives audiences every detail of this woman’s life. You learn about how her parents in the 1920s couldn’t imagine their daughter playing ball.

Stone was not like other girls or women, her interests were not in men, but simply in playing ball. Her passions were the ball, bat,

baseball statistics, learning the girl and fighting to be given the chance to play.

People always hear about the problems that Black men in the Negro Leagues in the 1920 to 1950s faced, so imagine what it was like to be a woman, who most people viewed as having a place in the kitchen, being a wife and being a mother.

Baseball was a man’s sport.

Diamond stunningly shows how life was very awkward for Stone, until she was ac-

cepted on the ballfield. So, one issue down and many more to go. This was a woman who didn’t only have to contend with the hatred and envy of White people, she had to contend with the hatred, envy and jealousy of the other players on the team she played for, which was the Indianapolis Clowns.

Parents have daughters that go through a tomboy phrase, but for Toni Stone, it was no phrase. This is

what she was meant to do and she did it and did it well! It is wonderful to see the strength, convictions, determination and triumph of this woman, while also seeing her insecurities and weaknesses. We hear about the man who loved her and married her and we learn the names of the Black men that she played with on the Indianapolis Clowns and what they as Blacks had to contend with, especially when playing in the South.

This play is truly an education you won’t forget.

And this ensemble is stupendous in their delivery of this powerful, important story. It includes tremendous performances by April Matthis, who totally lights up the stage as Toni Stone.

She embodies the character with respect, love and understanding. Her performance will move your soul. Kenn E. Head shows his versatility as he plays both a baseball player and a Madame, Millie who runs a whorehouse the players would stay at. Millie is a woman who admires Toni and thinks of her as striking a blow for all women as she plays on the field.

The rest of this amazing ensemble includes Eric Berryman; Harvy Blanks; Phillip

James Brannon; Daniel J. Bryant; Jonathan Burke, Toney Goins and Ezra Knight.

The creative team behind the shows truly puts you in the mind and spirit of the game and includes costume designer Dede Ayite, set designer Ricardo Hernandez; lighting designer Allen Lee Hughes; original music and sound designer Broken Chord; choreographer Camille A. Brown; hair and wig designer Cookie Jordan and fight director Thomas Schall. The entire production is brilliantly put together by director Pam MacKinnon.

r. Barbara Ann Teer’s National Black Theatre (NBT) presented the world premiere of 125th & FREEdom on June 8. Created, written and choreographed

by Ebony Noelle Golden, 125th & FREEdom is a five-hour, immersive public performance dance piece that is part dance party, part parade, part protest and ritual performance, and all Harlem. Exploring the question, “If Harriet Tubman were alive today, how would she free Black people?” the program transforms Harlem’s iconic corridor into a stage with performances along 125th Street from the East River to the Hudson River.

ous, but battle-weary tribe of nomads led by Tubman’s descendant on an epic journey to a land of promised liberation. Fusing song and

poetry with choreography based on historic and current Black social dances, the one-of-a-kind event closes out NBT’s milestone golden anniversary season.

The cast includes Audrey Hailes, Courtney Cook, Azusa “Sheshe” Dance, Alec Stephens III and Jason O’Neal. Paris Weeden, Ariel Blackwood, Ava McCoy, Everton Ricketts, Zenni Reach, and Trevor Latez Hayes are also featured.

he Women’s Forum of New York hosted the 9th Annual Elly Awards Luncheon benefiting The Education Fund of the Women’s Forum on Monday, June 17th, at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. The awards, named for the Women’s Forum founder Elinor Guggenheimer, honor outstanding women leaders. This year marked the 32nd anniversary of the Education Fund of the Women’s Forum, which has helped over 260 women, age 35 and over, whose lives have been disrupted by extreme adversity, complete their college degrees.

Launched thirty-two years ago to help other women realize their dream of a college education, The Education Fund has awarded over $1.8 million in financial awards to over 260 women to help them return to school, earn their degree, and take their place in the professional work world. Mother Zion, as it is called, is the oldest Black church in New York State, founded in 1796 and charted in 1799 in lower Manhattan. During the years of the Underground Railroad, Mother Zion was referred to as a ‘’Freedom Church’’ for its active participation in the network. The present Neo-Gothic church was completed in 1925.

In the years of the Great Depression, Mother Zion continued its tradition of social activism and is still a leading voice in the New York community.

3 Tips For Helping Children Embrace Their Unique Selves

S

ome small children don’t care what anyone thinks about them.

If they want to sing at the top of their lungs, they sing at the top of their lungs. If they want to wear a silly hat, mixmatched socks or gloves on a hot day, they do it – with no regard for how others might judge their eccentricities.

Somewhere along the line, though, most children long to fit in and begin to worry that their differences make them stand out – and not in a good way. So, they try to conform to what they perceive their peers or society expect from them.

“Unfortunately, in the process they begin to hide what makes them

unique instead of embracing it,” says Jennifer Lynch, an educator, child advocate and author of the children’s book Livi and Grace (www.jenniferlynchbooks.com).

“They become embarrassed or sad about their differences, maybe feel that people think they are strange, and that other kids won’t like them or won’t play with them.

And in truth, other children sometimes will bully a child who is seen as different.”

Lynch has served as an advocate for children in the court system, foster care and treatment facilities. In working with those children, many of whom are abused or neglected, she says, you often have to help them overcome

their insecurities about their differences.

“It’s important for them and all children to believe in themselves,” she says. “They need to understand that different is okay. It’s our differences that make us special.”

This message is so universally important, Lynch says, that it became the theme of her children’s book, which is based on her daughters and their distinct personalities.

“My two girls are so unlike one another that it’s almost shocking,” she says. “It made me think back to the children I encounter in the court system who say they dislike or even hate themselves because they feel different from their peers or their

siblings.”

Lynch says some of the ways parents or other adults can help children include: Remind them that differences make people special. While it’s natural for children to long to fit in with their peers, Lynch says, it’s also important for them to understand that their individuality is what makes them unique.

“Differences are interesting and life enriching,” she says. “Part of the message is that you should appreciate the diverse traits in everyone you know, and also appreciate what makes you special.”

Talk to them about the ways in which they shine. “Kids like talking about themselves,” Lynch says. “So get them

involved in a conversation about what they are good at. Maybe that is sports. Maybe it is writing. Maybe they make good grades or they are a good big brother or friend. Whatever their special talent is, explore it with them so they know that there is something they do well.”

Encourage them to help other kids feel good about themselves. Young people can feel empowered not only by embracing their differences, but also by providing support and being a friend to others who are different.

“When you help a child pick out positive things about themselves,” Lynch says, “they begin to focus on that, not the hurtful things that weigh

so heavy on their hearts and minds.”

She has worked as a special education teacher for an elementary school and as a preschool teacher. Over 1,500 Gathered at the Healthfirst Annual Health & Wellness Expo in the Bronx

ealthfirst held its 6th Annual Health and Wellness Expo in the Bronx on Saturday, June 15th under sunny skies at the Gouverneur Playground.

This year’s expo, themed “Come Together for Better Health,” attracted more than 1,500 attendees from the Bronx community and provided an ideal opportunity for them to learn about disease management, prevention, and lifestyle changes while engaging in family-friendly activities. Over 30 medical screeners provided free checks of blood pressure, glucose, and BMI, as well as mammograms. Local residents also had the opportunity to meet and speak with several community leaders including Assembly Member Michael Blake, Councilmember Vanessa Gibson, District Leader Cynthia Cox,

Lacking Self-Discipline? 5 Ways To Develop It And Reach Your Goals

A

mericans are known to overeat, abuse credit cards, marinate for hours in social media, and break New Year’s resolutions before the end of January. Self-discipline doesn’t seem to be a national strength.

And achieving self-discipline – and the success that can come with it – may never have been harder than it is in this instant-gratification age, says Dr. Rob Carter III. “Self-discipline is an undervalued trait in a modern society that wants everything now,” says Carter, co-author with his wife, Dr. Kirti Salwe Carter, of The Morning Mind: Use Your Brain to Master Your Day and Supercharge Your Life (www.themorningmind.com). “Self-discipline is the ability to motivate and coordinate our efforts to improve our quality of life, but

unfortunately most people are not taught it.

“It is, however, a skill that everyone can learn. Self-discipline is the skill that will allow you to reach any goal you set.”

Carter offers five ways to develop self-discipline: Be aware of your resistance. Resistance, Carter says, is the biggest obstacle to developing self-discipline, and it often comes in the form of discouraging internal self-talk such as, “I can’t do it” or “Why should I have to change?” “The next time you embark on a new project that causes resistance,” Carter says, “fight it by asserting or writing down your intended goal and the benefits it will bring.”

Plan for every outcome.

Plans go awry when people let excuses get in the way.

“An example is having a goal of running in the morning for 30 minutes, but you have bailouts such as it’s raining, cold, or you don’t feel like it,” Carter says. “Developing self-discipline is recognizing and planning for these self-created obstacles and actively choosing to work through them. So when you set a goal to achieve, have chart in place listing “Even ifs.” List the potential obstacles to achieving your goal and counter each one with a promise to yourself that you’ll achieve your goal even if these challenges arise.”

Prepare to give something up in order to gain.

Carter suggests compiling a list of the pros and cons of sacrificing for a certain goal. “To reach your goal, Carter says, “you will more than likely have to impose certain limita-

tions on yourself in order to gain something. These limitations could be less free time, socializing, money or television. The upside is that seeing the rewards of the sacrifice on the pros list will keep you motivated and disciplined.”

Reward yourself with self-compensation. “Rewards are an incredibly powerful tool for motivating yourself to reach your goals,” Carter says. “Consider them the carrot on the stick. Have a reward in place for when you achieve a goal or part of a goal, and make sure it’s appropriate.”

Break your goal down into manageable steps. “If you break your goal down into bite-sized steps,” Carter says, “you’re much more likely to stay disciplined enough to complete every sub-goal.

Each step accomplished gives you an encouraging boost.

Consider using SMART goals

— specific, measurable, attractive, realistic, timed. This makes the goal more definitive and puts the steps in tangible action.”

“Self-discipline includes structured planning, organization, delayed gratification, and the willingness to step outside your comfort zone,” Carter says. “These things can appear scary, but don’t worry, you’re not alone. And once you take the first step, you have ventured onto a beautiful path that offers many rewards.”

Big-screen TV for gaming. Fridge for snacks and drinks. Sofa for kicking back, a few good chairs, and places to hold your stuff. Maybe your parents will help out.

Maybe the landlord will let you paint. Maybe, as in “BTTM FDRS” by Ezra Claytan Daniels and Ben Passsmore, your new place will be interesting.

When it came time to finally get her own apartment, Darla didn’t bother to look far. She grew up in Chicago’s Bottomyards and though it still wasn’t the safest place on Earth, the former ghetto was gentrifying. That counted

for something, right?

Her father hated the building; he warned her away and yeah, it was super-creepy but the rent was good. The place was roomy, but also had room for improvement: as Darla moved in, the electricity kept going out and her friend, Cynthia, messed up the plumbing. Even so, Darla had neighbors: a famous rapper moved in down the hall and she met an elderly lady and her son from downstairs.

Was it the stress of the move, then, or the stress of living in the place itself that made Darla fight with Cynthia soon after Darla spent her first night alone?

Who knows, but they argued and the friend-

ship was over – or Darla thought it was, anyhow, but Cynthia had second thoughts. She snuck back into Darla’s apartment, got totally creeped out, hid in a cabinet, and fell down a tunnel… … and into a creature that wrapped Cynthia into itself and overtook her body.

The story is sly, almost backhanded and, much like the creature in this book, eats its way into your imagination until your hands sweat, your eyes dart wildly, and you realize that you’ve been holding your breath.
