Their annual Spring Gala did not disappoint as upcoming young stars of today sang the songs of the legends. The after party was amazing under the tent eloquently designed with music that kept the crowd dancing. Chase also granted $550,000 to help local non-profits and local minority and women-owned businesses, with an emphasis on black-owned businesses as part of the firm’s $150 million Small Business Forward initiative. his year’s Only in Queens Summer Festival will celebrate the 55th anniversary of the 1964 World’s Fair and the 80th anniversary of the 1939 World’s Fair. Both of those historic events were held in what is now Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The free admission festival will be held Sunday, June 23, 2019 from 3 PM to 8 PM, with the Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage Concert be-

ginning at 5 PM. The legendary musician Sheila E. will headline the free admission Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage concert. Hailed as the “Queen of Percussion” and regarded as one of the best female drummers ever, SHEILA E. rose to fame during the 1980s thanks to her fierce drumming style and Latin rhythms.

The concert will also feature performances by soul artist Musiq Soulchild and reggae and Dancehall

singer Kranium.

“There is no better way to kickoff summer than by welcoming the Queen of Percussion to Queens for what will be a great concert,” said Borough President KATZ. “Sheila E., Musiq Soulchild and Kranium are sure to put on a show that will get everyone up and dancing. APOLLO 85: Theater’s 14th Spring Gala raises $2 million to build on its legacy of creating legends.

O

n June 10th the place to be for music lovers in NYC was the legendary Apollo Theater celebrating its 14th Annual Spring Gala with the theme “Icons Revisited”.

A theme that underlines, as President and CEO Jonelle Procope said, the vital role that the Apollo Theater—the soul of American culture—has been playing since its beginnings in cultivating emerging artists and launching legends.

The Gala Concert, hosted by formidable and poignant comedian Amanda Seales, opened with an inspiring musical performance by Black Violin duo Kevin Silvester and Wilner Baptiste.

To celebrate music icons belonging to the APOLLO heritage - Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Donnie Hathaway and Billie Holiday - talented young and emerging artists Estelle, Jose James, Liv Warfield, Morris

Day and The Time, Kelvin Rolston Jr., Caleb Hawley and Cheryl Pepsii Riley performed their icon’s celebrated tunes.

Powerful singer John Holiday performed an emotionally charged version of “Strange Fruit” and James Harkness, the talented artist from the cast of the Tony winning Show “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations” – a must see now on Broadway - paved the way and set the energy level for what was coming next. Nothing less than a memorable performance from the current touring version of the group: Larry Braggs, Willie Green, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks and a special appearance by the only living founding member of the original Temptations, Otis Williams.

Otis Williams also attended on June 7th an emotional ceremony for the induction into the Apollo Walk of Fame of the group

The Apollo Mass Choir, under the direction of Tony Award® winner and musical genius Jason Michael Webb, triumphantly closed the gala concert.

As per tradition in its Spring Gala, the Apollo presented the 2019 Corporate Award to Robert F. Smith and Vista Equity Partners for their outstanding contributions to the performing arts, community leadership, and philanthropic support of initiatives in the African American community.

In a video message Smith - who recently relieved 400 students at Morehouse College from their loan debt – praised the Apollo for its role of socio-artistic leadership and its involvement in the community. Martin Taylor, Principal at Vista Equity Group, accepted the award expressing his profound respect for the Apollo Theater and its mission in lifting up

After the concert the guests were welcomed in a dream-like decorated tent, created by talented event planner and designer Apollo Board Member Bronson van Wyck, to continue the 85th celebration mingling and dancing. In the tent crystal chandeliers, black, gold, and red stage curtains and a 15 feet tall gramophone that served as a centerpiece, brought guests back to the

glorious times of the prior Harlem Renaissance where stars were grazing the stage and legendary tunes were performed in The Apollo’s historical hall. What an unforgettable evening.

Following its 85th anniversary the next exciting chapter for the Apollo’s new development phase is already on the way. The Apollo Performing Arts Center, with the theaters at the Victoria, is in fact scheduled to open in 2020 and it will mark the first physical

long 5th avenue thousands gathered for the 62nd annual National Puerto Rican Day Parade on June 9. From 43rd to 79th Street floats, bands, civil servants, activists, all representing the island nation of over 3 million, marched with cultural pride and joy.

This year the parade was dedicated to the town of Loíza, which celebrated its 300th anniversary. Loíza is a town on the Northeast coast of the island known for its deep African roots brought over by enslaved Africans over 400 years ago.

The Grand Marshal of his year’s parade was singer Ricky Martin, who shook his bon-bon on a float featuring musicians, singers and dancers from Loíza. Other honorees of the parade included Singer La India, Golf Pro Chi Chi Rodríguez, Guitarist/ Singer Jóse Feliciano, and Baseball Player Edgar Martínez.

Carlos A. Olivieri Jr. was honored with the title of “Teacher of the Year” by the parade committee.

He works in Bushwick, where he himself grew up. Olivieri said teaching is more than instruction, but about helping students feel pride in who they are and where they come from: “If you are associated with poverty there is a tendency to self-hate. . .I help my students learn to give yourself permission to love yourself and dream.”

years it’s been bitter sweet because of what happened with Hurricane Maria,” said Díaz. Maria is estimated to have killed over 4,000 people and displaced over 100,000.

Harlem Elementary School Showcases Student Art at Local Gallery Marisol Rodríguez

n June 12 The Young Diplomats Magnet Academy (P.S. 242) on 122nd street hosted their 5th Annual Art Gala at Raw Space gallery in Harlem, located at 2301 Adam Clayton Jr. Blvd.

From 2:30 to 6:00pm students, grades pre-K to fifth, showed off the art work they created during the school year to family, friends and school staff.

Principal Denise Desjardin had a vision of hosting the annual art gala at an art gallery to give students the opportunity to see their work displayed in a special and professional setting.

With the help of the 121st Block Association and Raw Space, this year it became a reality.

For five years art teacher Michelle Barksdale has been at the elementary school, working with grade teachers to create art projects that reflect the unit sub-

“I’ve always been a true believer that we have to cater to all different types of learners and all different abilities, aside from the academics we have to cater to future artists,” said Desjardin.

Parents like Calisher Perry were excited to see their child’s art on display in a gallery space.

“This is showing him the atmosphere that he can actually put his work on display and really, I think opens a lot of doors for students,” said Perry. Her son,

5th grader Kyle Pollydore, showed off his drawing “Sing” which relates to studying the Harlem Renaissance. Perry, a native of Trinidad, is an artist herself, a costume designer for carnival and theater. She sees an artistic inclination in all three of her sons. “I’m the type of parent who will nurture and cultivate art skills and they are showing that a lot,” she commented.

The Art Gala also served as a fundraiser for the school with

an admission price of $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 3, which included food and beverage. All of the students’ art work was also on sale for prices ranging from $3-5. Second grade teacher Iffat Hossain was selling multi-colored crayons which she makes from student’s old crayons she melts, mixes and molds into fun shapes like stars, hearts and flowers. “I don’t like to throw away things, so I teach them, if you can recycle, why

The Young Diplomats Magnet Academy is the first elementary school to be an authorized International Baccalaureate in the NYC Department of Education, according to Principal Desjardin. The benefits of this program include a focus on international education, as well as inquiry-based instruction that offers students choice in their learning activities.

There is also an emphasis on social activism with students learning ways they can affect positive change. “It’s not only about learning facts but understanding there are issues in our local and global community and in some way, shape or fashion they have to take action,” said Desjardin. One example is students writing a persuasive letter to their local elected officials on local pollution and park safety.

First start by counting your blessings, then assess how significant your problems really are. We all go through stressful times, but regardless of what you are experiencing, you won’t have to look far to find someone who

There is also something else you can give to others, and it’s free—a smile, that’s right, smile with a love that comes from your heart! It may sound corny, but as the old song goes, “What the world needs now

You are an integral part of the world environment, so contribute your love to it. Then you will see how the joy of giving to others will make you glow from the inside out in a way that no cosmetic treatment ever could.

Your true beauty will radiate from that internal glow—a radiance that no lipstick, moisturizer, hairstyle or facial could ever duplicate. Basically, think of my suggestion of feeling better and beautiful through “selfless indulgence” as in the old make-up rule: “Before you apply foundation, your face (e.g. your spirit), should be a clean canvas.” Think about it.

CHAPARRAL has been primarily used for the treatment of cancer, acne, rheumatism, and diabetes. It has also been promoted for its antioxidant effects, and as a blood purifier and a weight loss agent.

In 1959, the National Cancer Institute received reports that several cancer patients claimed beneficial effects from drinking chaparral tea.

Your whole body sags with the weight of things you know but can’t tell, and each new whisper adds to the pack. Secrets you carry are more than you can bear sometimes, which is why you need to share them – but in the new book “In West Mills”

by De’Shawn Charles Winslow, there’s virtue in hushing up.

Azalea “Knot” Centre was in the process of throwing her man, Pratt, out of the house for the last time. Or maybe she wasn’t because, although she hated having him underfoot, scolding

her for evenings spent at Miss Goldie’s bar, she also loved Pratt.

It was true that Knot drank a lot; even Otis Lee Loving, Knot’s best friend down the road, told her so. Otis Lee and his wife, Pep, worried about Knot. When Knot woke up one day and realized that she was pregnant, they worried even more.

Seems that was what Otis Lee did best: worry.

After he found a nearby family to take Knot’s daughter and raise her up, Otis Lee and Pep warned Knot not to sleep around anymore but pretty soon, Knot’s belly grew big again. She mourned for

months about her first girl-child, who was named Fran, and when Otis Lee found another family for the second girl, Knot mourned again. Otis Lee knew he’d have done the same thing, much as he loved his own son, Breezy.

And time passed in West Mills. Knot’s girls were raised almost right beneath her nose and Otis Lee and Pep kept her secret. There was no use telling those girls about who’d given them birth, just like there was no reason to tell Otis Lee the secret about his family that Knot had heard from another friend.

There was just no sense in hurting Otis Lee with

But in a little North Carolina town like West Mills, secrets have a way of escaping. Sometimes, they’re slippery little things.

And sometimes, they’re let go in anger and revenge…

“In West Mills” is one of those novels that makes you want to pause.

It takes place over decades, as its two main characters grow, for better or worse, and age together and apart. At first, you might even think that it’ll never get to the point – although it seems that is the point.
