The recipients of this award were the women of Curly Girl Collective, a marketing group that hosts CURLFEST, the largest natural beauty festival in America. Melody Henderson, one of the co-founders that include Tracey Coleman, Charisse Higgins, Simone Maik and Sia Lowe, spoke about their mission to help promote self-love and evolution through natural beauty.

“I was bullied in the first and second grades and I took that negative and turned it into a positive by sowing, which was my comfort zone,” said Ufele. “I decided to turn it into a full-time business.” Her grandmother taught her how to sow and her mother motivated her to use this gift to help others.

“I always saw my mom as a

strong woman. She always had businesses that she used as a gateway to spread her message, so I used that as inspiration to make my own.”

n June 8, Women in The Black New York Inc. hosted their 21st Annual Women’s Business Conference “Who’s The Boss” at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building Gallery Space on 125th Street.

The conference organized by the Harlem based entrepreneurial organization, included a full day of programming starting with an Honorees Breakfast and Business Pitch Competition, awarding the winner $1500 during the early part of the day. A variety of workshops were offered afterwards, including “Elevate your Income” with Gina B. Ramcharan, Chief Idea Curator at Idea Manufacturer; and “Spoken like a Leader” with Shemeka Brathwaite of Millennial Leadership Catalyst. There were also panels on topics including Fashion Branding. The day concluded with a luncheon, celebration circle and an after party.

f you have bugs in your home -- as many households do and the majority worry about -- there may be good reasons for this. Insects are resilient, strategic and way smarter than you may realize.

But before dealing with insect invasions, it’s helpful to understand what you’re up against. These surprising bug facts can help you better understand common opponents: • Cockroaches have the capacity to memorize and learn -- and they may just use those smarts to remember the layout and contents of your kitchen, including hiding spaces! But even without their heads, cockroaches are fairly formidable -- decapitated, they can survive for weeks.

• Once an ant knows where

food is located, it’ll leave a scented trail to guide others to the source. Ants help each other out in other ways, too.

Certain ant species have been observed linking their bodies together to build ladders, chains, walls and even rafts that float in water.

• If your fly-swatting skills leave something to be desired, don’t feel bad. Flies can detect danger from all angles and can react four times faster than humans.

Survey respondents also said they see more bugs in their homes as the weather warms.

In another recent survey, more than eighty-five percent of people expressed some level of safety concern with using traditional insecticide sprays inside the home.

According to experts, you don’t have to trade one worry (bugs) for another (traditional bug sprays). So how should you deal with creeping, crawling and stinging invaders?

Take a fresh approach to home insect control that you can feel good about with these safe extermination tips: • Keep common entry points like doors, windows and garages closed. Need a cross-breeze? Install screens on doors and windows.

• Seal cracks around window and door frames, which are both entry points and hiding spaces for bugs.

• Don’t stack firewood or

oung women in the Bronx and Brooklyn got a chance to pick a brand new designer dress to take home thanks to Believe in Yourself. The non-profit, founded by Sam Sisakhti, has already donated dresses across 20 states since starting two years ago, in cities including Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta.

This year New York was added to the list with donation events on June 4 at Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse, 1665 Hoe Avenue and on June 6 at Thomas S. It’s about the namesake of the non-profit: helping young women build their self-esteem and follow their dreams regardless of what others may say. Part of the motivation to create the non-profit came from Sisakhti’s own experience as a self-described “underdog.”

“I know what it’s like to be the forgotten kid in the classroom. . .I vowed I would help the underdog,” he said.

During the donation events at the Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx and Brooklyn Sisakhti shared his journey to becoming a successful business owner, including 150 rejections from potential investors over 18 months before starting UsTrendy.

Socio-emotional professionals like Jennifer Silvershein, therapist and founder of Manhattan Wellness Associates, a psychotherapist practice specializing in con-

fidence building, are crucial to the work of Believe in Yourself. Silvershein was a speaker at the Brooklyn donation event and experts like her help youth in addressing relevant issues like cyber bullying. According to Sisakhti, one of the most effective tips that has been offered is for youth to collectively stand up to online bullies versus joining in with them or staying silent.

Clubhouse shared their dreams with Sisakhti who said two careers of interest for the youth were fashion designing and skateboarding. When Believe in Yourself returns to the Clubhouse, planned for October, Sisakhti hopes to bring a fashion designer and professional skateboarder to speak to students. Additional dresses will also be awarded to the youth who achieved goals they set at the first donation event this month. In the future Sisahkti plans to extend the same programming to young men and create funding for tools students will need to follow dreams, such as an instrument for an aspiring musician.

What’s in a Name?

n May, I traveled to Utah to present two workshops at the Promising Youth Conference. It was the 40th year for the statewide conference. According to their website, the conference was designed to support “professionals from education, the juvenile court, human services, juvenile justice and public/private treatment resources” working with at-risk and under-resourced children and youth, “who are ex-

periencing educational, legal, behavioral, and/or mental health challenges.”

Over the years, I had participated in the conference providing the keynote address, offering different trainings and meeting with young people who were institutionalized. For most of the 40 years, the annual conference was entitled the Troubled Youth Conference. The descriptor was accurate and flawed.

Everyone’s life at one time or another is troubled. Yet, the manner in which we are viewed impacts us. Labels follow us. Young people either grow to believe a label such as troubled or they continually fight against it. Together, we

must choose to see the enormous potential of our young people.

More than a decade ago, I spoke with the organizer’s and suggested they change the name of the conference from Troubled Youth to Promising Youth. I believed the young people, while experiencing a rough patch, truly were promising. They looked at me with that look you give a naïve person and their smiles were the smiles of people who did not want to offend me. Since I did not live or work in Utah, did not understand all of the challenges they had to face and had not contributed a dime to the conference, my unsolicited opinion was not welcomed.

They were the victims of horrible crimes. Some of the teens themselves had committed horrible acts. And yet, as I watched them and felt a bit of their nervous energy, I marveled at what their presence meant. A community activist lawyer sat at their table. She was their mentor and advocate.

The snapshot I took in my mind was that of promising youth. Through the pain.

Through the mistakes.

Through the accusations.

Someone believed in them.

Here, in New York, we have youth who are experiencing trouble.

We have advocates and mentors who are fighting hard to help improve their future. Together, we must decide how we will view those who are carrying

the heaviest of burdens.

Will we see them as troubled youth or will we see them as our promising youth? What’s in a name?

Everything.

In late 2018, I received a call from one of the organizers asking me to return. Then, she paused and said, “We did it. We changed the name.” It is now the Annual Conference of Agencies and Organizations Servicing Promising Youth.

It took a little more than a decade to make the change. The fear that people would not attend did not bear fruit. The same positive energy that I encountered when I first traveled to Snow Bird remains. An army of dedicated volunteers continue to make the conference one of the most invigorating and best organized I have ever attended.

“We have a wonderful nation, but we still need more people in America who care about our kids and help provide positive places for them to grow and develop into the kind of citizens that carry forward the promise of our country,” said Lauren quoting her grandfather.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer thanked the Club for their contributions to New York City and proclaimed June 6th Madison Square Boys and Girls Club Appreciation for the great borough

The Clubhouse will service up to 400 inner city youths ages six to eighteen, providing them with “modern educational spaces and recreational facilities including a soccer field and basketball court, as well as innovative visual and performing arts spaces including a music and production studio, screening room and digital media and technology lab,” stated the Club’s site.

The Pinkerton Clubhouse on 250 Bradhurst Avenue is set to open on July 1st. Membership applications are now being accepted for the new Clubhouse. Visit madisonsquare.org to enroll.

etting together with your family this summer is going to be fun!

You’ll see your cousins and grandparents, friends and kin, and your aunts and uncles will be there, too. You’ll eat foods you love, play games to win, and you’ll hear stories that your family likes to tell. But what will you bring to the family picnic? In “Going Down Home with Daddy” by Kelly Starling Lyons, illustrated by Daniel Minter, that’s a question one boy struggles with.

As Sis slept in the back of the car next to him, Lil Alan worried

They were on their way to Granny’s house on the family farm, going to Daddy’s side of the annual family get-together, and everybody’d have something to share for this year’s celebration. Sis would sing a song for Granny. One of Lil Alan’s cousins had made a scrapbook. Another boy was reading a story aloud.

Everyone had something, but Lil Alan’s hands were empty.

Still, he had time to think.

When they got there, all the adults were laughing and slapping backs and giving out

hugs; the women had been cooking for days and everything smelled delicious for the feast.

Daddy fired up the tractor and took Lil Alan and his cousins out for a ride on the farm that had been in the family for a long, long time.

Daddy’s Pa had been proud of the land and its crops, and so was Daddy, and Lil Alan, too.

When Sunday morning rolled around, Lil Alan’s hands were still empty and so was his heart. At church, he heard more family stories as everyone worshipped together, but he was sad that he still hadn’t come up with something to
