February is Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history.

The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

We continue to record history in the black press. Last week we listed an historic number of “Blacks on Broadway” of over 200 compared to just 20 years ago when we began reporting and there were only 30. Earlier this week we saw another historic happening as we saw more African-Americans ever with Oscar wins. “African Americans have journeyed through four stages of a 400-year struggle,” Rev. Jackson said. “Stage one – ending slavery after 246 years in bondage; Stage two – ending the Jim Crow era with its mass lynchings and terror campaigns; Stage three – securing the right to vote; and currently, Stage four – securing access to capital, industry, technology and deal flow in the U.S. economy.” stated Rev. “We are in the early days of stage four,” he continued. “We have freedom in our lives, but we don’t have equality. There are some steps the African-American community can take to move closer to gaining equality and the fruits that will come with the successful navigation of stage four of the struggle. Queens Residents Celebrate Lunar New Year of the Pig in Flushing

T

his year the borough has several events to offer residents of all ages for Lunar New Year.

On Feb. 9th, Flushing held its free annual Lunar New Year parade, which has historically brought out large bustling crowds. The event featured brightly colored floats, steel drummers, firecrackers and dragon dancers. It started at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts as a warm-up reception for attendees at the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce.

Asian communities in Queens and around the world celebrated Lunar New Year on Feb. 5th, but the parade marks one of the biggest celebrations in the United States. The parade

commenced at 11 a.m. on Union Street and 37th Avenue in Flushing and thousands of Queens residents lined the streets of Downtown Flushing Saturday for the annual Lunar New Year parade. This year, residents welcomed the Year of the Pig with live music, elaborate costumes, vibrant dragons and appearances from several logo leaders.

The Queens Botanical Garden, located at 43-50 Main St. in Flushing held Lunar New Year-themed workshops, crafts and performances and were selling lucky plants all week before in honor of the holiday.

Although the timeline is up for debate, the Lunar New Year has been observed since roughly the Shang Dynasty in 1766 B.C. The origins are not fully known; however, old tales say the beginning of the tradition sprung from a fight facing a beast called

“Year.” “Year” wreaked havoc, causing destruction to property and people. His victims found that he feared fire, loud sounds and the color red, thus launching a series of traditions such as lighting fireworks and large, red-colored parades.

And the order of the signs? Legend has it the order of the calendar is based on who arrived at the Jade Emperor’s party first. The

pig, being the 12th animal on the calendar, got there last.

The Year of the Pig predicts good luck for those born on its 12-year cycle: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 and 2019.

Individuals who are born on the Year of the Pig are assumed to be charismatic, energetic and up for any task regardless of its excitement.

Queens Development Corp. Offers Restaurant Loan Program in Downtown Jamaica

Loan amounts can range from $50,000-$150,000 and 25% of the loan is forgivable after successful repayment.

The loan has a 5% interest rate over a 3-5-year repayment period.

To be eligible the restaurant must be located within designated Downtown Jamaica boundaries, must be a new (or substantially different) restaurant business, must be a for-profit entity and must create a minimum of 4 jobs.

The amount requested can be no more than 40% of

project cost. If you are expanding an existing restaurant then it must be growing into least 40% more space and include significant renovations.

Applicants can own no more than 2 restaurants in New York City and the project must align with program objectives.

In the next two years alone, 5.9 million square feet of residential, hotel, and retail space are slated to come online including 4,800 new residential units and 2,200 hotel rooms. This new development leverages Jamaica’s position as the hub of Southeast Queens: 49 bus lines, 4

subway stops, an LIRR station, and the AirTrain to JFK intersect in Jamaica; 86,000 people walk the downtown every day and 30,600 university students attend area schools.

Downtown Jamaica, Queens was selected by Governor Andrew Cuomo as a winner of a competitive $10 million grant competition through the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). DRI is a strategic investment plan that identifies catalytic downtown projects consistent with the initiative’s goals.

in downtown Jamaica is one of those projects and it focuses on improving the dining options and nightlife activity in the downtown area by establishing a Restaurant Startup Loan Program as well as an incubator space for new food businesses at the Jamaica Market, which GJDC owns and manages.

What Men Want

W

hat Men Want is a clever comedy from the same team that brought you Girl’s Tripand stars Taraji P. Henson in her first leading role in a comedy. It’s a movie where both men and women can learn a little bit about each other. The men are not demonized and the ladies are shown to be less than perfect as well.

Henson plays Ali in the movie. Her father, played

by Richard Roundtree (Shaft), is a widower who runs a boxing gym. He taught his daughter that if you get hit, you’ve got to hit back harder.

While the lessons she was taught help her move forward in the “good old

boys network” she does develop a reputation as a woman that does have difficulty in dealing with men.

One evening during a “girl’s night out” she has a spiritual connection over a cup of tea with a physic called “Sister,” who is played by Erykah Badu.

The “tea”, mixed with some other drugs like weed and ecstasy and a hard bump on the head, give Ali the power to hear men’s thoughts.

The movie is a hilarious romp with the female sports agent using her “powers” to break the glass ceiling at her job but affecting her relationship with a single father she meets who is a bartender at a local club.

The rest of the cast, in-

cluding Ms. Badu, is solid, but I really enjoyed the scenes with Erykah, most of it ad libbed. She stole

every scene she played in the movie. (Also, there are some additional Badu scenes at the end of the

movie, so stick around until the very end of the credits.)

The movie is rated R for language and sex and runs

right at 2 hours. This is a great date movie, but it is also a very adult comedy.

he 48th annual New York State Black, Puerto Rican, and Asian Legislative Caucus weekend was held earlier this month and has even more meaning to many legislators and their constituents, who turned out because of the record number of diverse and minority lawmakers elected to their seats this year.

In 2015, Carl Heastie was elected Speaker, NYS Assembly, He is the first ever African-American Speaker of the New York State Assembly. Historic this year 2019 are the women elected - Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins and Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes are the first-ever African American women majority leaders for the Senate and the Assembly in New York State this year.

Assemblywoman Latrice M. Walker, is Chairwoman of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus, Inc. Presently, the New York State Legislature has 30 African-American members and 16 Latino members. African-American and Puerto Rican legislators have joined with other Hispanic legislators and New York’s lone Asian legislator to form the Legislative Caucus of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislators and

the current caucus has 47 members in both houses.

Harlem state representatives kicked-off the Caucus weekend with a Harlem Party on Friday night held after the Chairman’s reception. There were workshops all day Saturday and an expo which feature city and state agencies, as well as local New York business vendors including the

They need to learn to work, take care of their children and the mother of their children. They get the idea that they have problems in common with each other and are able to

solve them. Participants say they have a feeling of comradery as they talk about their lives in front of the group, without judging each other. The young men get a stipend if they are in good standing in the program, and also free Metro cards to use public transportation.

There is also a 12-

week program for fathers who have graduated high school but want to go to college. Students attend it 2 days a week, and there are placements into internship programs. For those who have a high school degree or pass the high school equivalency program there is support to make applications to col-

leges and get enrolled in college.

2019 Oscars: Blacks Win Big “A Historic Moment in Black History”

he 2019 Academy Awards have presented to us “A Historic Moment in Black History.”

Black Panther was a big winner, taking home Oscars for Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter) and Best Production Design (Hannah Beachler).

Both women making history. Carter, who thanked her 97-year-old mother during her speech, is the first black woman to win the coveted category.

Beachler is the first African-American and only black woman to be nominated and to win for set design.

Carter thanked Spike Lee for helping to launch her career in the entertainment business while Beachler thanked Black Pantherco-writer and director Ryan Coogler stating, “I stand here because of this man who offered me a different perspective

of life,” says the Moonlightand Lemonadeproduction designer.

Ludwig Göransson won the Best Original Scorecategory for Black Panther. He also thanked Coogler, his collaborator while the two were students at the University of Southern California’s film school.

Regina King started the night off with a win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk. Her role was small but mighty and the decorated actress cried as she thanked her mother. Regina also described herself as an example of what can happen when you pour love and support into a person.

Mahershala Ali became a two-time Best Supporting Actor Academy Award-winner with his win for Green Book. Ali thanked his grandmother

for her sage advice and always believing in him. Peter Ramsey won for co-directing the Best Animated Feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, making history as the first African-American to win the award.

Prolific filmmaker Spike Lee won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman

after having been overlooked in the competitive categories. Lee literally jumped into the arms of prolific actor and fellow Morehouse man Samuel Jackson in celebration of the win. While Jackson held the statuette, Lee went on to discuss slavery, Black History Month, his grandmother, a Spelman College graduate, and his

alma maters: Morehouse College and New York University. The filmmaker said, “Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let’s do the right thing,” when accepting his award. The academy finally did the right thing by acknowledging the contributions of African-Americans in front of and behind the camera.

Macy’s Black History Month Fashion Conversation With Dapper Dan

n Wednesday, February 20th, 2019, the Men’s Mezzanine floor at Macy’s Herald Square was jam-packed with people of color and fashion forward people from all ethnic backgrounds to hear from special guest Dapper Dan talk with moderator Brandice Daniel, founder and CEO of Harlem’s Fashion Row in celebration of Black History Month.

Macy’s Chief Diversity Officer, Shawn Outler and Voza Rivers a leading African-American theater, music, and events producer, documentary filmmaker and Vice President of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce were in attendance to kick off the evening’s festivities. Voza told the audience how Macy’s has not only sponsored the Back to School fashion show during HARLEM WEEK festivities for

the past 10 years, they have also allowed the kids to keep the fashions they modeled in the shows as well.

Brandice Daniel led an in-depth conversation with legendary Harlem designer and cultural trailblazer, Dapper Dan on the Harlem Renaissance and its impact on fashion and culture, advice he wanted to share with today’s up and coming designers and fielding questions from the very large audience in attendance.

Before the likes of Kanye West and Rihanna were doing it, “Hip-Hop’s fashion godfather” planted the seed for fashion in the music genre.

Tailor Daniel Day, better known as Dapper Dan made luxury even more luxurious, producing custom looks in fur and designer leather, scarcely affordable for anyone outside the elite circles of sports stars and drug kingpins.

Dan’s memorable pieces are influencing what goes down the runways more than ever.

Gucci and Dapper Dan have signed a joint venture in a new Harlem space for him to work his sartorial magic with a free hand and raw materials supplied by Gucci.

Dapper Dan’s advice to people coming into the fashion business today is to educate yourself. Study the major brands and their symbolisms. Dan read books by noted educator Dr. John Henrik Clarke that inspired him to take a tour through Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Tanzania as one of the students chosen in 1968 by the Columbia University-Urban League program. It was a formative experience which inspired him to “Africanize” premium European brands like Fendi, Louis Vuitton, MCM and Gucci for his client list that included everyone from Harlem hustlers to the likes of Run DMC, Mike Tyson, Salt and Pepa, LL Cool J and Bobby Brown in custom kits riffing on high fashion brands.

Dan’s boutique stayed open 24/7 for ten years and even had an after-hours window where late night clients could come get work done.

“You have to know where you are and then think about where you need to go as a people and focus on that. Social media options available

today gives you the opportunity to get your message out there to the masses in ways that were not available to me back in the day,” Dan stated.

Following the discussion, all were encouraged to stick around to meet the guest of honor, experience live music from The Rakiem Walker Project, and enjoyed refreshments from Harlem restaurant, Melba’s.

A New Year’s Resolution for Children in New York: School Improvement

N

ew Year’s resolutions are underway across the state of New York, and I’m one of those who are trying hard to keep the promises I made to myself. I’m focused on finding an exercise I like and can maintain, journaling more, and eliminating debt, but I am quickly learning that mapping out a clear plan with how to accomplish these will make my success much more likely. New York state officials are engaging in a similar exercise as they lay out our state’s priorities for 2019. As Governor Cuomo reflects on how our state is succeeding and where there is still room for growth, we must ensure that education

and school improvement remain top priorities for New York.

In his recent budget address, the Governor made a commitment to support an education system that distributes funding based on schools’ needs and fairness. Further, he also took the first steps to follow through on that commitment by allocating increased aid for our highest-need schools in his 2019 budget. While

this can be considered encouraging progress, these priorities must remain at the forefront of Governor Cuomo and his administration’s to-do list for the upcoming year for the success of our state and our students.

As President and CEO of the New York Urban League and a lifelong advocate for young people, I know that closing achievement gaps between our highest- and lowest-per-

forming schools is one of the most pressing equity issues of our time. If we want to improve education outcomes and strengthen our state, we need to improve our schools and assure that every child has access to a high-quality education, no matter their zip code or the color of their skin. Especially as companies like Amazon bring more tech jobs to New York City, we must ensure that all schools promote skills like math, science, problem-solving, and innovation so that children across our city and state are qualified for such positions.

Under the most recent education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), our state has an opportunity to make the bold and innovative chang-

es necessary to improve the trajectory of all New York students. A recent review of New York’s plan to improve low-performing schools by education experts and civil rights leaders found that New York has laid a strong foundation but can still improve the sustainability of its plan. Overall, New York’s plan focuses on equity in schools and ending segregation inequities. It also builds on proven, successful school improvement strategies and emphasizes school improvement at the local level, so that tools and techniques are tailored to local and diverse communities. However, while New York empowers local communities to lead turnaround efforts for low-performing schools, the state could take additional steps and use its

authority to help ensure schools and districts make progress on their improvement goals.

As the Governor works with lawmakers on our state budget and embarks on 2019, I urge them all to put actions behind words and assure that our schools have sufficient support to increase equity and give every child a high-quality education. I also urge educators, parents, and community members to make your voices heard and advocate for the changes you want to see in your local school. We all play an important role in helping our students learn, and their success is our most important resolution for the new year.

HeartSmarts Ambassadors Spread The Word of Healthy Living Marisol Rodríguez

I had the privilege to speak to some of these inspiring individuals, here’s what they shared: Ronnie Johnson A renowned Gospel singer and member of the Pleasant Grove Tabernacle in Brooklyn for over 40 years, Johnson is a survivor of 10 short strokes that left him temporarily blind and crippled in 2017. “I am a real walking miracle,” he said. After his doctor recommended HeartSmarts, Johnson is informed on living a healthier life and calls the program “essential for every human being.”

Johnson loves to use music at the start of his classes which he says has a calming effect, and also invited an instructor to teach CPR at the request of his group.

Marva Ortiz Wade When Wade, a former nurse, learned of her pre-diabetic condition, she realized it was time to make changes. “I saw myself as a patient, that was so different for me,” she said. HeartSmarts has given her the information she needs to eat healthier and make better live choices.

Her students have become empowered through the curriculum to become better advocates for themselves. “We teach people what they need to ask when they are at the doctor’s office,” she said. She starting teaching at her church, Bethel Gospel Assembly in Harlem and says scripture serves as a great support to remind people their body is sacred: “God is saying your body is a temple.”

Beverly Bruin-Reddic HeartSmarts has been a “conscious raiser” for Bruin-Reddic, who is a heart attack survivor herself. She sees cardiovascular disease as a social justice issue as it affects African Americans disproportionately, especially due to the stressors they face including systematic racism and poverty. She has taught with her friend Marva Ortiz Wade at Bethel Gospel Assembly and incorporates a weekly

potluck into her version of the course to teach people how to make salads they will enjoy. “I ask my students have you thought about putting nuts, fruits or raw veggies in your salad?” said Bruin-Reddic. She also spoke of the importance of creating a safe space in which people feel comfortable talking about their personal health challenges, which she does by being transparent about her own history: “When you show you are being honest, when you are able to be vulnerable, people open up.”

Cheryl James When learning of the HeartSmarts mission to help communities of color who are plagued by heart attacks, James became motivated to join the Ambassadors program. She also saw herself in the very statistics she was learning about, having two of the pre-existing conditions for cardiovascular disease. James has trained fellow parishioners at Greater Allen Cathedral in Queens and said many, including herself, are surprised to learn that more women lose their lives to heart disease than to breast cancer. One of the most important tools she teaches is reading food labels: “Ninety percent of the individuals I have trained never really paid attention to labels.” James feels it’s one’s responsibility to use information to live healthier lives: “When you know better, you are expected to do better.”

any are unaware heart disease is the #1 killer in the United States, yet a largely preventable illness. Dr. Naa-Solo Tettey is on a mission to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and stroke, through a unique health education program.

It’s called HeartSmarts and uses scripture to teach participants about the top risks of cardiovascular disease, including an unhealthy diet, living a sedentary lifestyle, being diabetic, being overweight and having high blood pressure. The program of New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center was created by Dr. Tettey, principle investigator, in partnership with Dr. Holly Andersen, director of education at the Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute.

One reason Dr. Tettey decided to use scripture was to appeal to African Americans, who have the highest rates of heart disease, especially between the ages of 45-64, according to the American Heart Association. “Research has shown that faith-based organizations are the pillar of the African American community,” said Dr. Tettey. “The church will be a primary location and partner in our efforts to reduce the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease in these communities.”

Since its launch in 2012, the HeartSmarts Ambassador program has trained over 190 individuals to teach the 12-week HeartSmarts course at churches and senior centers throughout the five boroughs.

The role of the ambassadors in the success of the program is vital.

These dedicated individuals are the messengers infusing their passion for helping others and creativity in teaching to inspire their peers to make what can be life-saving choices to live a healthi-

Manicures, pedicures, facials, getting your hair done, dinner at a nice restaurant and the like are great—and might help you look and feel better—but they are fleeting moments. So how about thinking of another way to indulge? You can still do the regular stuff but, what I am about to suggest is just an addi-

tional component, another perspective; one that may actually have longer-lasting results in making you feel better and “beautiful” in spite of your stress.

First start by counting your blessings, then assess how significant your problems really are. We all go through stressful times, but regardless of what you are experiencing, you won’t have to look far to find someone who has is less fortunate. At least you are able to consider spending a couple of bucks on yourself to do something. Look beyond yourself and do something completely selfless for someone else. Skip your man-

icure, pedicure or facial, and instead give it as a gift certificate to someone who has never received one or who is going through personal or financial hard times.

There is also something else you can give to others, and it’s free—a smile, that’s right, smile with a love that comes from your heart! It may sound corny, but as the old song goes, “What the world needs now is love sweet love.” You are an integral part of the world environment, so contribute your love to it. Then you will see how the joy of giving to others will make you glow from the inside out in a way that no cosmetic treat-

ment ever could. Your true beauty will radiate from that internal glow—a radiance that no lipstick, moisturizer, hairstyle or facial could ever duplicate.

Basically, think of my suggestion of feeling better and beautiful through “selfless indulgence” as in the old make-up rule: “Before you apply foundation, your face (e.g. your spirit), should be a clean canvas.” Think about it.

To get you started, the experts at South Beach Diet -- a more accessible version of the keto diet – recommend these five keto-friendly, heart-healthy foods: 1. People can try to categorize you, but it just won’t work. As you’ll see in the new book “Brown White Black” by Nishta J. Mehra, there’s a lot to learn.

One of her earliest memories still stings.

Nishta Mehra was “about seven or eight years old” when she was shopping with her mother and a little boy called her the n-word. She cried then, not because she was

Black but because she wasn’t.

As the child of parents from India, Mehra is “brown” but she “came of age not fully at home in either black or

white spaces.” She was an only child with few other Indians nearby, and she had to blaze her own trails through whatever discomforts she might feel in social, religious,

and cultural situations – something that was exacerbated when she went to college and she “realized that I was queer.”

Today, Mehra’s life is “complicated.”

Her internal narrative always included children but never a wedding.

While in college, though, she met a white woman who became her professor, then her partner, then her wife. Nineteen years Mehra’s senior, Jill had assumed that she’d never have children, until the idea of adoption became so appealing that the two women carefully searched for a gay-friendly agency.

Nine months later, they were the mothers of

a Black baby boy.

It takes a lot of restraint to continue to kindly answer questions about being “a two-mom, three-color family,” says Mehra. People say things that are hurtful or that make her angry but that’s also given her a better awareness of the privilege she had and of the institutions and limitations of gender assumptions and roles and of racism in America.

“I often wonder if what feels so essential to me now,” she muses, “would still be on our radar if we did not have a black son.”

goes, are more damaging than mere words. It’s a retort that author Nishta J. Mehra disputes, but conflictingly so.

While so very valuable as an entry into the national conversation on the meaning of language and family, “Brown White Black” may also seem somewhat rantlike. Mehra makes many excellent points: in how she shouldn’t have to explain her life, her son’s life, his love of “girly” things, or her shorn head; on why she allows him certain freedoms; on having children, and the panoply of choices.

But then, curiously, she questions the choices of others in childrearing, friend-making, and mundane things like “car sticker families,” focusing particularly on language (“words matter”) and seemingly refusing to allow for even the slightest of natural human awkwardness.

“We’re making it up as we go,” says Mehra on gay marriage, and that’s a sentence to remember if you tackle this book.

“Brown White Black” is certainly a thought-provoking look at modern American families but for some readers, it just won’t fit.
