We have brought you Black History Month editorial every week throughout the month of February. This week journalist Hazel Smith presents the history of the Black Press. Harlem Community Newspapers, Inc. is a proud member of NNPA (organization of 200+ Black newspaper publishers in the US). Please pray for my family. I have received my second shot of the Pfizer vaccine last week and I am happy to report I had no side affects and feeling a sense of security. Please get your vaccine when it is your turn.

CVS Health & LYFT Builds on Community-Based Strategy to Address COVID-19 Vaccine

VS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced its community-based strategy to address potential inequities related to COVID-19 vaccine access in vulnerable communities, with a particular focus on Black and Hispanic populations.

The strategy includes proactive patient outreach, community-based partnerships and vaccine clinics, and robust, education-focused marketing, all aimed at increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates.

“We are committed to reaching people of color and underserved communities to ensure health equity as we work to vaccinate all Americans,” said Karen S. Lynch, President and CEO, CVS Health.

“Our presence in commu-

nities across the country uniquely positions CVS Health to educate vulnerable populations and connect them with vaccine administration services.”

There are nearly 10,000 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide, with almost half located in communities ranked high or very high by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). High SVI rank, along with population density and area demographics, are critical factors CVS Health is using to prioritize the CVS Pharmacy locations that are offering appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations. Beginning last week, select CVS Pharmacy locations in 11 states began offering vaccinations to eligible popu-

lations as part of the federal pharmacy partnership program. As more supply becomes available, the company will continue to prioritize these measures as it expands to additional states, while increasing the number of stores offering vaccinations.

In communities where COVID-19 vaccines are currently available at CVS Pharmacy locations, the company is working to help ensure Black and Hispanic patients have equitable access to appointments. CVS Health will reach out to CVS Pharmacy patients, Aetna members, and CVS Caremark members in vulnerable communities to help them make an appointment and to answer questions or concerns they may have about being vaccinated.

Additionally, CVS Health is working with its extensive network of community-based leaders and nonprofit organizations, including free and charitable clinics, faith-based organizations and others, to reach these vulnerable patients and help them make an appointment.

The company is also working with these nonprofits to distribute educational information on COVID-19 vaccines and underscore the importance of getting vaccinated.

To further increase access to vaccines, the company is planning to use mobile vaccination vans and launch community-based clinics in March and April, working closely with nonprofit organizations including the YMCA.

“Throughout the pandemic, the Y has worked to meet the needs of the 10,000 communities we serve across the United States,” said Kevin Washington, president and CEO, YMCA of the USA. “We are proud to team up with CVS Health as part of our efforts to help ensure everyone has equitable access to accurate information about the vaccines and to the vaccines themselves, especially communities of color, which have been disproportionately affected by the health and economic impacts of the virus.”

Lyft will work with CVS Health and non-profit partners to help underserved communities access vaccination appointments by providing free or discounted rides

for those in need. Lyft’s universal vaccine access campaign is a partnership of companies, community organizations and individuals working together to make sure everyone has access to affordable, reliable transportation to get to vaccination appointments when they need to.

Home Buying in Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now

o purchase or not to purchase a home? This is the question confronting many low to moderate income prospective first-time home buyers today. They want to buy a home but do not know how to start the process. They are finding the home values somewhat intimidating and beyond their purchasing limit.

However, many of them are motivated by the extremely low interest rate now being offered.

Currently the rates are around 2.50 – 2.875 percent. The interest rate is basically what the banks will charge for lending you money for the mortgage.

Although the rates have been historically low for almost the past 24 months, prospective first-time buyers are aware they will not last forever. This knowledge is providing them with an additional incentive to complete the home buying process as soon as possible.

Even though the market values in Harlem are still quite high, what is most encouraging is the unyielding resolve of these prospective first-time buyers. They are not willing to give up on pursuing their dream of homeownership. They know the process will not be easy and are will-

ing to make sacrifices in their spending habits to successfully purchase a home. More money will be required for the down payment and the closing cost.

It is important to maintain a positive attitude if you are going to successfully complete this very difficult process. Here are some key points to keep in mind: (1) you must have a strong desire to become a homeowner.

(2) Create a projected purchase date. Make a target of

hree-time Grammy Aw a r d - n o m i n a t ed singer and actress Andra Day, 36, will receive the distinguished Breakthrough Performance Award from the Palm Springs International Film Awards for her staggering performance in the film “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” directed by Lee Daniels, which is an intimate tale of a civil rights trailblazer whose defiance through music helped usher in the civil rights movement. Daniels explained the importance of bringing this story to light. “She was really dogged by the

government for singing ‘Strange Fruit’ and they really, really -- they came for her,” he said. “So to me, she kicked off the civil rights

movement as we know it to be, and I had to do it. I had to tell her story.”

“The United States vs. Billie Holiday” takes

place in the 1940’s in New York City where the federal government targeted Holiday following the release of her 1939 civil rights protest song “Strange Fruit,” in a growing effort to escalate and racialize the war on drugs, ultimately aiming to stop her from singing her controversial and heart-wrenching ballad.

“Few jazz vocalists are more beloved than Billie Holiday, and Andra Day brings Holiday and her iconic voice back to life through a sympathetic and nuanced portrayal that sheds new light on the U.S.

government’s role in seeking to muzzle a homegrown legend,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner.

“In her impressive feature film debut as an actress and her first leading role, it is our honor to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to Andra Day.” The role marks Day’s first major acting performance which she does not take lightly out of a sense of accountability to Holiday. “I didn’t want to be a stain on Billie Holiday’s legacy,” Day said. For Day, Holiday was “the woman that helped me to own my voice, to make

sure that whatever it is that I’m creating affects people, that it’s intentional.” To get inside Holiday’s skin, Day made some major lifestyle changes. “It took me forever to get improper,” Day said. “I did start smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and being more sexual.” Her efforts garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama!

The cast also includes Trevante Rhodes, Garrett Hedlund, Natasha Lyonne, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

The film will premiere on Hulu on February 26, 2021.

hen I recently was made aware of GOSO’s approach to help solve the devastating problem of lack of opportunities for black and brown youths who get caught in the vicious circle petty crime/ jail, more serious crime/ more jail …I had to have a conversation with Miss. Rainey about the important mission of GOSO and its team of dedicated so-

cial workers.

What are the aims of GOSO? Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO) envisions a world where neither a person’s race nor contact with the legal system determines their future.

Each year GOSO provides 1,000 16-24-year-old young men impacted by arrest and incarceration with the wraparound services and resources they need to further their education, secure meaningful employment, and achieve emotional well-being.

We achieve this goal by applying our “Goso approach” that is based on the three Es: Education, Employment and Emotional well-being. We believe that all three work together to form a foundation on which GOSO participants can build

their future.

Which communities are mostly represented by GOSO participants?

About 95% of GOSO participants are Black or Latinx youth from marginalized communities characterized by poverty, crime, and incarceration, including many from Harlem. Most have experienced significant childhood trauma, and about 50% are experiencing housing insecurity and/or homelessness. About 65% lack a high school or equivalency diploma at the time of their enrollment; approximately 70% have no prior work experience or marketable skills. About 60% of Community Program participants are formerly incarcerated, and about 40% are at risk of incarceration and have been referred to GOSO by justice

system practitioners.

GOSO’s impact is very impressive: 86% of the participants stay out of prison or jail; 69% of those placed in subsidized GOSOworks internships achieve full-time employment upon completion and 71% are engaged in work and/or school. According to you what is the reason of this success?

GOSO’s approach is person-centered, and we tailor our services to meet the individual abilities and needs

of each participant. Our job readiness and placement program, GOSOWorks, places participants in subsidized internships with 100 employer partners across New York City. For many participants, this is their first job and many are hired in full-time jobs after going through the program. Through the assistance of the array of supportive programs that we offer, many of our participants become outstanding employees, ready to grow with the challenges of the job.

Despite the challenges they face, GOSO participants demonstrate maturity, resilience, and a strong desire to reshape their lives.

For the young people we serve, we dream of justice transformation, infused with trauma-informed care, healing, and dignity. We dream of a world where we do not need to exist.

he luminous lighting beaming from Manhattan’s sweeping skyline emanated from three celebrated New York structures – One World T r a d e C e n t e r ’s spire, One Bryant Park, and One Five One in Times Square – were made possible

by The Durst Organization in celebration of Black History Month and the One Hundred Black Men of New York’s (OHBM-NY) 41st annual fundraising gala on Thursday, February 18, 2021, honoring influential leaders from across business, politics, media and entertainment, as OHBMNY continues over forty years of unwavering commitment to empowering Black communities.

Over 3,000 virtual attendees participated in the exquisite event which raised half a million dollars to benefit the pivotal work of the historic non-profit organization. Proceeds will go toward OHBM’s

Junior One Hundred scholarship program for promising high school students, Citywide Hunger Relief program to support seniors and families in need, and local COVID-19 relief efforts.

Each year the Harlem-based organization hosts an annual gala honoring high-profile leaders who share the organization’s goals. This year’s event, modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was named “The Day of the One Hundred,” and featured a day of service dedicated to honoring transformative leaders working to strengthen the fabric of Black communities, spearheading citywide community service, and raising critical funds for OHBM’s programming.

Starting at a Black Newspaper, Dana White Is the First Black Woman Chief Communication Officer at a Major Automaker

“Growing up I always knew about the power of communication, the power of words,” she said, talking about her childhood in Charlottesville, Virginia. “My grandfather, who was born in 1896, founded the oldest black newspaper in the state. I used to cut ad sheets every month and write copy and process black-and-white photos [at the paper]. The entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in me and my family.”

While the weekly black newspaper, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Tribune, is gone, the family’s entrepreneurial spirit lives on. “The environment I grew up in, my family, was that there was never just a pot of gold waiting for me at the end of the tunnel,”

Now Dana White runs North American communications for Hyundai Motor Company, a South Korean car maker that builds more than half of its vehicles at its plant in Alabama and employs some 25,000 people in the United States. She joined the Zenger News advisory board in 2019.

White sees herself as a cross-cultural bridge.

At Hyundai Motor North America, she is the Chief Communications Officer—a first for Korean automaker in the U.S. She oversees communications for Hyundai Motor North America headquarters and all of Hyundai’s North America Affiliates including Canada and Mexico, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Glovis (Hyundai’s Logistics Operations), Mobis

(Hyundai Parts Operations), Hyundai Capital and the Washington, DC Office. White also has strategic oversight of Hyundai’s luxury automotive brand Genesis, the first SUV for the industry’s newest luxury brand.

lmost 56 years to the Feb. 21, 1965, assassination of Malcolm X, the slain leader’s daughters and a noted civil rights attorney are shining a light on those whom they believe are responsible for the heartless murder.

The group gathered on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the old Audubon Ballroom – since

renamed The Shabazz Center – with lawyers Ray Hamlin and Paul Napoli and Reggie Wood, whose relative, NYPD Officer Ray Wood, allegedly confessed in a deathbed declaration letter.

The gathering occurred in the same venue as the assassination and just one day before the heinous crime’s anniversary.

The new allegations focus on Officer Wood and a conspiracy against organized civil rights groups that he said had been perpetrated by the New York City Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

“Without any training, Wood’s job was to infiltrate civil rights organizations and encourage leaders and members to commit felonious acts,” Crump noted in a news release before the gathering.

“He was also tasked with ensuring that Malcolm X’s security detail was arrested days prior to the assassination, guaranteeing Malcolm X didn’t have door security while at the Audubon Ballroom, where he was killed on Feb. 21, 1965.”

Wood’s purported death bed letter was delivered to three of Malcolm’s daughters – Qubiliah, Ilyasah, and Gamilah.

Ray Wood served as an undercover New York City police officer with the Bu-

reau of Special Services and Investigation (BOSSI).

Reportedly, he earned a reputation for infiltrating the Bronx Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) chapter under the name Ray Woodall in 1964.

According to a report in The Guardian, Wood posed as a 27-year-old graduate of Manhattan College studying law at Fordham University.

“He was soon named CORE’s housing chairman and oversaw a voter registration project,” The Guardian reported.

“Wood earned his activist bonafides by getting arrested with two others at city hall while attempting a citizen’s arrest of Mayor Wagner for allowing racial discrimination on a public construction project,” the U.K.-based newspaper published.

By 1965, Wood had been reassigned to infiltrate a group calling itself the Black Liberation Movement (BLM) and received credit for defusing a plot to bomb the Statue of Liberty.

murder.

Talmadge Hayer, who later changed his name to Mujahid Abdul Halim, was the only one to admit guilt in the assassination.

Norman Butler, who later changed his name to Muhammad Abdul Aziz, and Thomas Johnson, later named Khalil Islam, maintained their innocence.

Aziz won parole in 1985; Islam was released in 1987, and Halim was released in 2010. Islam died in 2009.

A Netflix documentary, “Who Killed Malcolm X?,” was released last year and featured interviews conducted by Abdur-Rahman Muhammad, an activist and investigator who said he dedicated his life to solving Malcolm’s murder.

Following the documentary’s release, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced it would review the case and reopen it if they found new evidence.

Justifiably, America was forced to acknowledge a new movement with a bold declaration - BLACK LIVES MATTER. I submit that we add to that emphasis, BLACK NEWSPAPERS MATTER. It is not a decision to replace or dismiss White newspapers by exclusion, but rather to sustain a platform of all inclusion.

Black newspapers publish news about we, the people. Some black newspapers may place

an emphasis on uplifting, positivity and celebration of our unsung heroes and sheroes; others chose to inform daily issues of crime, disparities, and political chaos, while others focus on social, church and community works.

The mindset must be one of room for it all, because all aspects of our journey is important and

worthy of noting in all media. We can choose to read the Black Press, choose to subscribe, but most of all, understand when we choose to advertise in a black newspaper, we are participating in the concept of the African drum that is the heritage of a proud culture. We can choose to spread good news you can use, the motto of this 25-

year Harlem Community Newspaper.

frican drums are more than musical instruments for entertainment. The drum has carried Africa’s rich history as a sacred source of spreading important and often urgent communication.

African drumming revealed the hope and despair of a people that had to persevere in the face of Europeans.

Information was its prime purpose to organize and keep spirits high through various beats that meant different things discernable to tribes across the continent.

Drums played an important role in the history of slavery. It did not take long to discover that the slaves used drums for communication, especially in the Caribbean. British, Dutch, and French slavers, suspicious about any form of communication between slaves, soon forbid drumming to curtail their fear of uprisings.

It is recorded that by 1776, some slaves had learned to read and write.

In 1872, Samuel Cornish and John Brown Russwurm printed the first African-American periodical called Freedom’s Journal in New York. African Americans migrated around the country and it

opened the door for numerous newspapers to publish information to the rising Black population in every city.

Black newspapers in a manner of speaking, began drumming our stories across the nation. Such popular papers included: Philip Alexander Bell’s Colored American (1837– 41), the North Star (1847– 60), the National Era, The Frederick Douglass Paper (1851–63), the Douglass Monthly (1859–63), The Christian Recorder (1861–1902) and Daniel Rudd’s Ohio Tribune (later renamed to American Catholic Tribune, 18851897).

Communities depended on black newspapers to keep them abreast of political meanderings that controlled their lives and livelihood. Racist discrimination and disparities in the North; ongoing lynching in the South, meager business opportunities and sometimes acknowledgements of the so-called new negroes who refused to be held back were the highlights of daily editorials and rehashed on opinion pages.

In 1940, John H. Sengstacke founded the National Negro Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) when he was Vice President and General Manager of the Chicago Defender, the largest black newspaper in the United States at that time. The family of Dr. Frederick K.C. Price announced his passing on the evening of February 12, following a brief bout with COVID-19.

The 89-year-old minister had a distinct approach to ministry as a teacher versus preacher. His aim was for people to grow in their knowledge of God, the bible, its promises, and to apply its principles for life success.

Apart from being a teacher of faith, Dr. Price was an ardent biblical scholar and author of over 50 books, including How Faith Works, Gold-

As a highly disciplined individual, Dr. Price served as a positive role model of excellence. He took God at His word and encouraged others through his personal example of applied learnings as a devoted husband and father, and as an integrous employee in the private sector prior to his full-time service in ministry. He was an enthusiastic student of life and an unapologetic stickler for truth, with the belief that ‘once you know better, you can do better.’

Upon the founding of Crenshaw Christian Center in 1973 in Inglewood, California, Dr. Price quickly

amassed a following of those hungry to improve their life circumstances through sound biblical teaching. His multiple services which were broadcast through his own established Ever Increasing Faith Ministries television ministry, accelerated growth and led to the construction of the Faith Dome, a 10,000-seat sanctuary situated in South Los Angeles which opened in 1989. With a growing presence of viewers in New York, Crenshaw Christian Center East was established in 2001.

Dr. Price, like Paul, was an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a true sower – investing in the lives of people by ensuring access to the truth of God’s word for its triumphant application.

Despite his full life as a husband and father, he served as

a very present mentor to others. In 1990, he established the Fellowship of Inner-City Word of Faith Ministers (FICWFM) with convenings to boost the growth of ministers, their ministries and laypeople. The multi-day family affair was a showcase of faith and love-in-action as people traveled from all corners of the world to absorb deeper biblical teachings.

Dr. Price encouraged everyone to know the bible for themselves, and he diligently unpacked its teachings with practical life examples. He often used his personal life as a way for others to learn, peeling back the curtain to expose an early fear of the ocean, having never learned to swim as a young person.

He addressed this head on by becoming an excellent certi-

fied scuba diver.

Dr. Price left an indelible mark as a global influencer for good. His desire was that people from all walks of life would reach their full potential to impact their families, homes, workplaces, and society-at-large. His dedication and commitment to the community of South Los Angeles was steadfast and unwavering.

Dr. Price is survived by his wife of 67-years, Dr. Betty Ruth Price, his four children, Angela, Cheryl, Stephanie and Fred Price, Jr., pastor of Crenshaw Christian Center, 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. “He was the consummate family man, and that’s one of the hallmarks of his ministry and his life,” said daughter and church president, Angela Evans.

Born in South Carolina, Theodore ‘Ted’ Corbitt was an ultramarathon pioneer, author, and physiotherapist. Throughout his illustrious 50-year career, he ran 199 marathons and ultramarathons’, which are typically races of 50 or 100 miles or 24 hours.

In 1952, Corbitt became the first Black American to represent the

United States at the Olympic Marathon which was held in Helsinki, Finland. He was the founding President of New York Road Runners, a member of the inaugural class of inductees into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in Utica, and a pioneer of race course measurement.

Corbitt is noted to have run up to 312.5 miles a week and is widely credited as a source of inspiration to runners around the world.

Corbitt will join Mayor John Lindsay, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux who have roads in Central Park named for them. Most recently, the lower loop was named John V. Lindsay Dr. in 2013, and the 72nd Street Cross Drive, that runs past Bethesda Terrace, was named Olmsted Vaux Way in 2008. Ted Corbitt Loop encompasses the 6 miles he and runners world-wide have run for more than a century.

NYC Parks is committed to supporting the fight to end systematic racism locally, nationally, and throughout the world. In June 2020, the agency declared solidarity with the Black community when it created Juneteenth Grove in Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza Park. In addition, on Black Solidarity Day 2020, Parks also announced the first tranche of namings for prominent Black Americans in an effort to foster effective and equitable changes within the City’s parks system.

In preparation for the second phase of namings, New Yorkers now have an opportunity to submit name recommendations to further highlight the Black experience in New York City. For more details and to submit suggestions, please visit our website.

Plans to Unveil a Bust of Marcus Garvey in Ethiopia Revealed

Martin Luther King Jr. once called Marcus Garvey the first “man on a mass scale and level to give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny.” The founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), a fraternal order of Black nationalists, Garvey implored Black people to pride themselves in their race and return to Africa. But, through his many travels, Garvey never traversed African soil.

Now, 81 years after his death, officials in Ethiopia plan to unveil a Bronze Sculpture in Addis Ababa to honor the legacy of the Pan African independence movement

architect. According to a news release, the sculpture highlights Ethiopia as a focal point for Pan-Africanists to engage in constructing a unifying African heritage and destiny. “Our history began, in a sense, with Ethiopia,” Dr. Julius Garvey, Marcus Garvey’s youngest son, told NNPA Newswire.

“Its history goes back to the beginning of civilization. Ethiopian history is fundamental, and it began before Egyptian history, and that’s important when you consider the true history of [man],” Dr. Garvey remarked.

“But, of course, the history has been distorted in terms of European history, rewritten in the 17th and 18th centuries.

We have to know our Black history and understand our history because we’re still making history built on what went on before.” In commissioning the sculpture, Dr. Garvey joined with the Pan African Technical Association, Strictly Roots, and the renowned Los Angeles artist Mr. Nijel Binns to create the Marcus Garvey Bronze.

Plans are to unveil the sculpture during a public ceremony on Aug. 17. Dr. Julius Garvey, Ambassador Yaw Davis, the founding director of the Pan African Technical Association, and renowned sculptor MNijel Lloyd Binns, plan to speak at the event that viewers can witness via www.iaafestival.org.

Marcus Garvey earned recognition as Jamaica’s first national hero, and his bust stands in the Hall of Heroes of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. He is considered one of the central pillars of the Pan-Africa movement. Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League boasted more than 6 million members and over 1,000 branches in 42 countries in Africa and the Americas.

“My father was a major proponent of the redemption of Africa, but he was never allowed to go to Africa because of the colonial policies,” Dr. Julius Garvey remarked.

“So, taking a bust of him back to Africa is significant and historical from that perspective as well,” he said.

However, the United Nations, the National Newspaper Publishers Association, and others have recognized the 500 years of the transatlantic slave trade.

“You know, they say it was 400 years ago when the first African slaves landed in the United States, but people were brought to the Americas, meaning Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, before that,” Dr. Garvey exclaimed. “So, 400 years is just a convenient date, and it shows how much we need to know our history.”

Black Female Inventors and Scientists

A

s we come to the close of Black History Month and begin the celebration of Women’s History Month in March, I thought it would be a good idea to write about a few of the many Black female inventors and scientist then and now.

Many of the inventions that we often take for granted were created by black inventors. There was a time

when the U.S. patent office would not recognize inventions created by blacks, allowing whites to take credit for black inventions. Women inventors not only had to deal with racism, but they also had male chauvinism to contend with.

Sarah Goode was the first African American female to receive a U.S. patent in 1885, born a slave Mrs. Goode and her husband moved to Chicago after the civil war to open a furniture store. Many of her customers lived in exceedingly small apartments.

Mrs. Goode invented a folding cabinet bed, which could be converted into a cabinet desk when not in use. This was the forerunner of the Murphy and sofa bed.

Dr. Patricia Bath was the first Africa American women to receive a patent for a medical purpose in 1988 for her invention the Laserphaco Probe a medical device that makes use of a laser to remove cataracts quickly and nearly without pain. Dr. Bath was born in Harlem received her B.A. in chemistry from Hunter College and her Doctoral degree from Howard University’s Medical School.

Dr. Hadiyah Nicole Green became an orphan at an early age she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle. Dr. Green lost both her aunt and uncle to cancer. Her aunt refused to be treated with chemotherapy and she watched her uncle suffer from the side-effect of chemo until he died.

This experience motivated Dr. Green to become a distinguished physicist.

Dr. Green’s groundbreaking research of using laser technology to insert nanoparticles to kill cancer cells has a great deal of promise. This type of laser technology has shown a 100% cancer tumor regression in mice and may one day replace the need for chemotherapy.

The Hidden Figure book and movie allowed Dorothy Vaughan NASA’s first Black female engineer (1958) and her colleagues Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden to receive well deserved credit for their work in helping make the NASA Apollo 11 moon landing possible.

NASA recently named their Washington D.C.

headquarters after Mary Jackson. Dr. Mae C. Jemison became the first Black female astronaut in 1987 her title was Science Mission Specialist. Dr. Jemison became the first Black women astronaut to travel in space in 1992.

On June 20, 2009, at 8:03 pm ET, Space.com reported that NASA had found evidence of water on Mars. If water is truly the mother of life, water on Mars may be the first sign of life outside of our universe. On February 18th, 2021 at 3:55pm NASA became aware that Perseverance NASA’s robotic Rover had landed safely on Mars.

Dr. Moogega “Moo” Stricker along with mathematician and rocket scientist Annie Easley are two of

NASA’s current Black Hidden Figures. The discovery of life on Mars could change our understanding of life and of the only race on Earth The Human Race.

Following in the footsteps and accomplishments of Black female inventors, at the age of 7 Zora Bell became the youngest person to create a mobile app video game. The first grader from West Philadelphia presented her full version mobile game at the University of Pennsylvania’s Bootstrap Expo in 2012.

That’s a question some people never ask themselves: seemingly intuitively, they know the answer at birth and they don’t think about it again. Then there are those who struggle with knowing until their last breath.

Still others have stories to tell about their search to learn who they are. Read on...

One big secret-not-secret lies at the heart of “Raceless”

by Georgina Lawton.

Born after a long labor in a London hospital in 1989, Lawton was the child of a (white) British father and a (white) Irish mother, and with her black hair and deep brown eyes, she “was

not the baby they had been expecting.” To save face, her conception, the result of a one-night stand, wasn’t talked about, and her curly hair and brown skin was blamed on a genetic quirk on her mother’s side, end of story. Lawton was raised with love, never questioning anything until four years ago, when she took a DNA test that indicated Nicaraguan ancestry.

Her father had died by then, and her mother refused to discuss it.

The frustration and the not-knowing sent Lawton on a round-the-world excursion, from Great Britain to Nicaragua to the U.S., South Africa, and elsewhere, in a search for racial

identity. This book is the result: a thoughtfully-written, beautifully-told look at Blackness, culture, and love. It’s a story that sometimes reads faintly like a travelogue, but one in which the search is not for interesting sites, so much as it is for insight, making this a quietly persistent, personal, and wonderful story to enjoy.

Like Lawton, Rebecca Carroll grew up in circumstances that were unique: as a little girl, she was literally the only Black person living in her small New England town. In “Surviving the White Gaze,” she writes about a picture-perfect childhood, the beliefs she was raised with, a feeling that there was

something amiss, and her ultimate reckoning.

The story of how she was born and entered her family’s lives was something Carroll knew from a very early age. Unlike Lawton’s family, Carroll’s parents never hid anything from her; she was told the names of her birth parents and she knew some of the woman’s close relatives so it’s a bit of a surprise that meeting her (white) birth mother was rather anticlimactic.

Still, that meeting and the subsequent relationship they forged left Carroll walking a long, fine line between two mothers, and looking for the identity she craved all along.

“Surviving the White Gaze” is good: it’s full of nostalgia for anyone over 50 and it perfectly explains the inner turmoil and delicate balance of straddling two worlds while searching for place. Also, though, it’s heavily peopled and the number of names you’ll need to keep track of can be a challenge. Just beware, and take this thoughtful, thought-provoking memoir as it comes.

Then, once you’ve devoured these two books, there’s good news: in the last few months, many authors have taken this journey of identity and are willing to share, no matter who you are.
