Happy Holidays! I attended the annual NY Hillbillies Christmas Party and it was indeed a special treat. The Surf Club has breath-taking ambiance with a great river view. The members are gracious ladies, many whom spend the year being of service to the community. The band kept the crowd up beat and entertained, the food was great and everyone enjoyed this very special holiday occasion.(see page 17) We took random shots of some of the holiday decorations in Harlem. I look forward to the day when the major retailers moving on 125th Street give us Holiday windows similar to 5th Ave. For now we do have the wonderful holiday lights by the 125th Street BID from Morningside to Lenox Ave and the lights by the NEHMA merchants from Fifth Ave to Lexington Ave. Remember to shop with businesses in the neighborhood this holiday season.

Manhattan DA’s Office Has Criminal Justice Investment Initiatives in Harlem

anhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance and his staff held a breakfast meeting last month across the street from their Harlem office, on Tuesday, November 27th from 9 am to 10:30 am at the Alhambra Ballroom located at 2116 Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Blvd. DA Vance invited local community leaders, advocates, legislators and media to learn more about community-oriented work his office is doing in the Harlem community as they wrap up the first year of implementing their Criminal Justice Investment Initiative (“CJII”).

The CJII grants were made possible by using forfeiture funds paid by international banks to pay for the community-based programs and others. DA Vance and

his team secured $12 billion in settlement funds from international banks that were evading U.S. banking laws by “disguising” transactions of supporters of terrorist groups and banned countries. The U.S Government received half and $3 billion went to the treasuries of New York Sate and New York City. The DA’s office has dedicated $250 million to CJII with the goal of wanting to invest to transform relationships with and investment in our communities.

CJII’s goal is to invest in impactful, sustainable and data driven ideas to strengthen and support youths, families and community initiatives and melt away the adversarial relationship between law enforcement and the Harlem community.

These programs have the potential to generate long-term budget savings by preventing crime, reducing the number of repeated offenders and enhancing the number of alternatives to incarceration.

Leaders of four current community-based organizations spoke to attendees about their CJII-funded work in Harlem, including: Rev. Maurice Windley of Community Connections for Youth located at 302 W 124th Street that connects with 220 youth in group homes. His group runs the CJII’s Central & West Harlem Youth Hub, one of five such youth hubs across the city. The hubs bring multiple service providers together to deliver holistic, wraparound supports and opportunities to young people. Other youth hubs are located on the Lower East Side, Washington Heights, East Harlem and Manhattan-Wide location at The Door.

worker Dunia Garcia have developed the Community Navigators Program which develops a network of trained peers like her team member Jonathan Espinosa that work as community navigators. They work with people to locate, connect, engage and stay involved with at risk participants to identify their need and co-develop an action plan. They meet people where they are and serve as a bridge to guide participants across different systems, city agencies and organizations.

Julio Medina, the founder, executive director and CEO of Exodus Transitional Community received a grant to expand its programming for young men of color which provides them with clinical services and support to address trauma from being exposed to violence and

Dr. Ashwin Vasan runs the NYC Health Justice Network who noted that ill health affects the formerly incarcerated population and they suffer from premature mortality and chronic diseases at alarming rates. The center needs a health centered approach in addressing the racial disparities to connect individuals reentering their communities from jail or prison to primary health care providers.

Queens Holiday Delights for Residents of All Ages

any holiday troupes and shows returned to Queens in the past week.

“The Nutcracker” and “A Christmas Carol” join Charlie Brown, holiday concerts, candlelight tours, and a tinker festival. There was also the Signal to Noise launch.

It wouldn’t be the holiday season without a handsome prince, toy soldiers, and an army of mice. Sugar plum fairies are important, too. The National Ballet Theatre of Odessa presented “The Nutcracker” at Queens College’s Colden Auditorium on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 7 pm.

Led by former Moiseyev dance company soloist Nikolay Anokhin, this troupe did all the traditional choreography for familiar pieces such as “Waltz of Flowers,” “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” and “Waltz of the Snowflakes.” They moved

and grooved in enchanting, colorful costumes around lavish sets and dancing snowflakes as they presented two acts with an epilogue. Tickets ranged from $23 to $42 with fourpack deals for rear orchestra seats that ranged from $72 to $128. Students with CUNY ID got 10 percent discounts.

“The Nutcracker” is based on a German story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” which E.T.A. Hoffman wrote in 1816. It was adapted into a ballet in 1892 with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composing the score. The story varies with each production, but the basic plot is a fantasy involving a little girl whose imagination takes her on a journey with a prince through a magical forest to the Land of Sweets. An evil mouse king, Mother Ginger, flute-playing Danish shepherdesses, and tre-

mendous dancers are part of the tale.

On December 15, The Shell-Shocked Nut started at 2 pm. The East Village Dance Project upends the classic structure of “The Nutcracker” to take a war veteran, a wandering child, and a cast of lively characters on a journey at Jamaica Performing Arts Center, 153-10 Jamaica Ave. From December 15 through December 16 there was the Black Spectrum Winter Festival with a holiday market, scavenger hunt, crafts, inflatables, tree decorating and lighting, live music, kinara candle lighting, train rides, and poetry at the Black Spectrum Theatre, 177-01 Baisley Blvd., Jamaica.

On December 14, Signal to Noise Live Event started at 9 pm. There was music, interactive digital art installations, and participatory experiences. Peter Burr’s large-scale single-channel computer simulation “Dirtscraper” was on a 90-minute loop. Videos selected by The Psychedelic Film and Music Festival loop continuously as well.

The performance “Interference AVV” started at 10:30 pm. Laura Ortman’s violin improvisations accompany Martha Colburn’s triple-projector piece at the Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria’s Kaufman Arts District.

How Zip Codes Relate to Achievement Gaps By: Akil Wilson

here’s no question that education quality has an extraordinary impact on the future lives of students. As a parent of a new middle school student, I can personally attest to the importance of dedicated teachers, early childhood education and a focused, personalized approach to education. In numerous studies it has been shown that the quality of education, especially within the country’s public school system, varies widely by location.

There are several factors that contribute to success in adulthood. However, routinely we find that early childhood education and the empowerment of excellent teachers plays a pivotal role.

Students from economically-disadvantaged areas of inner-city school districts have a plethora of obstacles to overcome, including but not limited to: lack of economic mobility, reduced health care options, and exposure to crime.

Where schools should provide some relief from these challenges, they often serve as a grim reminder of how difficult it can be to escape difficult circumstances.

Harvard University Economist Raj Chetti has researched this topic extensively, compiling data from

millions of Americans, he found that education quality relates to economic and social mobility. According to Mr. Chetti’s research, on average, “only about 7.5% of children from the bottom 1/5thof incomes will reach the top 1/5thof incomes nationwide. However, those odds tend to rise to 14-15% in rural areas and places with higher social capital.

They sometimes decrease to below 5% in impoverished or socioeconomically-disadvantaged places.”

Children in lower income brackets disproportionately tend to be the recipients of sub-par educational resources. As Mr. Chetti points out on NPR’s ‘Hidden Brain’ Podcast, larger class sizes and less experienced teachers are all indicators that students are much less likely to obtain the cognitive and social skills necessary to advance themselves and their families.

The fact that these lower-performing public schools

tend to be found in more impoverished or socially/culturally isolated areas is not a coincidence.

Prior to the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in the 2017-2018 school year, education standards were largely determined by federal standards outlined in No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). This structure did very little to address the specific needs of the most disadvantaged communities.

ESSA seeks to improve students’ chances at success by encouraging a more personalized approach to students’ needs, strengths and interests as well as improving and decreasing the emphasis on standardized testing. Much of the research suggests this approach will do more to advance specific, individual state school system goals and impact students’ lives.

It’s very important that parents, teachers, administrators and community mem-

bers take strategic steps to address factors contributing to the educational shortcomings in some of our schools while working with policy makers to equitably utilize all the tools and resources available.

The future is now, and if our community ever hopes to eliminate the disparities that are at the root of many of the issues we are often confronted with (i.e. poverty, mass incarceration, chronic unemployment) we have to begin with education.

By requiring states to identify and intervene with their lowest-performing schools and take a more tailored approach to their improvement, ESSA is poised to have a significant and measurable impact on the state of public education in America.

There is a very real correlation between underperforming schools and generational poverty. If we wish to eliminate the latter, we must tackle education with a focus and energy that is specifically tailored to the needs of our communities.

Celebrating The Life and Legacy of DTOH’s Arthur Mitchell

He sang as a youth with Convent Avenue Baptist Church and he loved Thanksgiving because he just wanted to say thank you.”

Cicely Tyson spoke in comical detail about meeting and forming a lifelong friendship with Arthur Mitchell and how she never thought the day would come where she’d be speaking at a memorial service for her dear friend.

Gospel musical selections “Going Up Yonder” and “It is Well” were sung by the church’s choir and three dance performances were beautifully executed in honor of him or had been choreographed by Arthur Mitchell himself.

Former students taught by Arthur Mitchell such as Kay Mazzo and fellow dance performers Jacques d’Amboise and Edward Villella spoke briefly about how they met, worked and developed lifelong

n Monday, December 3rd, 2018 a memorial service to celebrate the life and legacy of the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s co-founder Arthur Mitchell was held from 5 pm to 8 pm at Riverside Church, located at 490 Riverside Drive. Arthur Adams Mitchell Jr. , the oldest son of five siblings, was born in Harlem on March 27th, 1934 and he passed away at 84 years old from renal failure in the hospital on September 19th, 2018 according to his niece, Juli Mills-Ross.

The memorial service began with nine African drummers leading the processional of people into the chapel of Riverside Church. The service was attended by thousands including Mayor David N. Dinkins, Cicely Tyson, Carmen De Lavallade, Rev. James Forbes, Sr. and his niece Juli MillsRoss.

Numerous people spoke during the service beginning with Rev. Debra Northern, Riverside Church’s Minister of Parish Care, Athena Moore, Director of Northern Manhattan Office on behalf of Man-

Some facts about Arthur Mitchell’s professional career as a dancer began in 1955 when he became the first African American dancer with the New York City Ballet (“NYCB”) and some white patrons complained when he was paired with white ballerinas. Still, NYCB co-founder and artistic director George Balanchine continued to give Mitchell opportunities to shine.

Soon, Mitchell became a soloist and finally a principal dancer, which was a first for a major ballet company at the time.

When Martin Luther King Jr. had been shot and killed, Mr. Mitchell has said that he thought to himself: “I could wait for others to change things for black Americans. Here I am running around the world doing things — why not do them at home? I believe in helping people the best way you can; my way is through art.”

He began teaching dance in a garage, with only two students showing up to the first session. Within months, he had about 400 students and had moved the class to a church basement.

MUSIC: Sounds will include Harlem’s best, and will range from gospel to soul, funk, jazz and Latin.

Musicians will be stationed along 125th and will include Vy Higginsen’s Gospel For Teens, Kolja Gjoni & the Soul Brothers, Jainardo Batista y Kumbakin, Friends of Funk, the Sound of Victory Gospel Choir and the Hot Hand Brass Band. You can also march along with the Marching Cobras and Fogo Azul drumlines as they parade along the corridor.

he New York Urban League (NYUL) hosted its 32nd Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fair on November 10, 2018, from 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM. The Fair was presented in partnership with the Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair Tour, Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park and the New York Urban League Young Professionals with sponsorship from UBER and GEICO. A total number of 4,123 attended the event, and 1,597 were offered on-site admissions. In addition, applying for multiple colleges can be

costly, so we are pleased to share that 2,100 application fees were waived, 265 scholarships were offered totaling $895,500.

High school and community college students had face-to-face exposure to many of the most respected historically Black

institutions of higher education throughout the country. High school seniors received onsite admission, possible waived application fees, and scholarships.

There were also workshops and guest speakers with focus on helping students gain the knowledge and

tools necessary for them to move to and through higher education.

Parents particularly appreciated workshops designed for them to help their children in the college going process. The workshops were A Parent’s Guide to College: Prepara-

tion Checklist; College Admissions Test: A Preview of the NEXT SAT; Paying for College: Scholarships, Grants, Loans and FAFSA prep; Local Options: CUNY and SUNY. Attendees included high school and community college students and their

parents, community and faith-based youth groups, and college prep groups.

There is no charge to attend the fair. The Fair is always held the second Saturday of November.

Last year over 3,200 attendees including, prospective college students and their families converged at the park to take part in NYUL HBCU Fair.

arents know that seeing clearly is important for their kid’s success in the classroom, but many are not taking their child to get annual eye exams. This is a problem because many kids don’t know what seeing clearly looks like.

According to a recent study by VSP Vision Care, the largest notfor-profit vision benefits provider in the U.S., and market research agency YouGov, eight-in-10 parents (83 percent) agree that a regular eye exam helps kids do their best in school, but four-in-10 (41 percent) wait until their child complains about their vision to

Clear vision is not only important for academic performance, but also for sports and everyday tasks. That’s why a comprehensive eye exam is so important for children. Early detection and treatment provide the opportunity to correct vision problems.

Here are some guide-

lines to ensure you’re taking care of your child’s eyes properly.

• Watch for signs that indicate a vision problem. Common signals include covering one eye, holding reading materials close to the face, a short attention span and complaining of headaches or other discomfort. Parents need to look

for these signs, as many kids, not knowing what seeing clearly looks like, won’t complain.

• First eye exam should be done at six months of age. Most parents don’t know that children should have their first eye exam when they’re only six months old! This is particularly important, as experts say as much as 80 percent of learning is done visually.

• An eye exam can detect early signs of health issues like diabetes.

Community Healer Salaam Jaha Celebrates 31 Years of Service Marisol Rodríguez

amela Salaam Jaha’s connection to the arts began as a child at the Castle Hill Community Center in the Bronx. From being an 11-year old girl choreographing dances and performing plays, Salaam was nurtured into the role of director at the age of 18.

As much as she struggled to leave the 3,000 families she serviced over the time spent as director, Salaam saw a need to look outside of her neighborhood for opportunities to learn more about the world at large and be an example to her community.

From this intention, grew Salaam Arts and Inspiration (SAI), a business that now celebrates 31 years of servicing youth, educators and parents throughout the five boroughs.

Salaam started SAI using her natural gifts of dance to work with youth, which evolved into integrating literacy, pub-

lic-speaking and community leadership into her teaching. She found a way to support learning of core subjects like history and math in her performing arts classes. “I would utilize what the teacher said was a challenge into music and dance,” reflected Salaam. “If math was hard I would incorporate math formulas into the choreography.”

At the 10-year mark of working with public school students through SAI, Salaam experienced an aha moment: “I noticed the students who had better relationships with their teachers and parents were more productive in school.” Motivated to improve her services, she created the ‘Personal is Professional’ workshop to support educators in developing healthier relationships with students and the ‘Parent Power Academy’ to support parents with tools to help them understand and work with their children.

As she continued her mission in the NYC public school system, she recognized a universal desire of those around her to heal and become better human beings.

Teachers and Parents began to seek Salaam for support in physical and spiritual healing outside of the school setting. From this need grew Eve’s Room, an oasis in the heart of Harlem, where Salaam offers healing through various modalities she has been trained in including Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Shamanic Reiki Energy Healing, traditional medicine and curanderismo or ancient Mexican natural healing.

In 1999 Salaam experienced a life-altering accident when she fell from a Metro North platform. As she dangled in mid-air, her body experienced complete muscle damage and doctors told her she would never be able to dance or even walk upright again. Where others would accept the diagnosis, Salaam

refused and started her healing journey of retraining the muscles of her body through daily exercise and has since regained all of her abilities.

She now sees this accident as part of her path to the healing work she does for others. “Even that fall was to force me into spiritual teaching,” she said. “I was doing so much meditation and energy healing on myself, people started taking notice.”

Part of her current healing

work centers around connecting women to their divine feminine through workshops known as the Avocado Series. Kaychell English, an educator and participant in the Avocado Series, found the workshops to be a positive outlet where she could learn and grow among a supportive group of women who shared a common interest in self-discovery and self-mastery. Kaychell also gained a sense of clarity and purpose. “What was instilled in

me in that class is we as women have so much to do to save the planet, to save society, to save humanity, and as a woman if you don’t know how to self-care, if you don’t know what is going on in yourself, how can you actually benefit anyone?” she said.

Salaam is also the founder of Girl Spirit, WomenSong Inc., a non-profit with a focus on guiding pre-teen and teenaged girls in building “healthy behaviors & attitudes of self-awareness, self-respect, self-determination and self-reliance.”

Rochelle, New York. The New York Hillbillies is a social club founded in the 1930’s by people who lived on Harlem’s famed

That’s what you say when you want something, and people are impressed by your manners. You’re a kid who never just takes, you always ask first because you want the same kind of manners back. But in the new book “Don’t Touch My Hair!” by Sharee Miller, you might have to ask for them, too.

Aria loved her hair.

She loved it because it was bouncy and curly, dark and soft. She loved it because it grew “up toward the sun like a flower,” and because she could do a whole bunch of different things with it, depending on her mood.

Problem was, everybody else loved her hair, too. And they all wanted to touch it.

Aria knew that people were trying to be nice.

They were just curious because they didn’t have hair as bouncy-soft as hers. But nobody ever asked permission before touching, and that was a big problem!

She tried to hide, but they found her on land.

She pretended to be a mermaid but even the ocean’s creatures wanted to touch her hair. The jungle was no better, and someone very large was waiting for her when she hid “in the tallest castle tower.” Not even a trip to the moon helped Aria

show that the desire not to be touched casually is a normal wish with a simple solution that won’t chase away friends. The empowerment to put that solution to work is in here, too.

That wouldn’t work at all, so Aria just went home, hoping she could ignore the problem. She covered her hair with the hood of a sweatshirt but people still wiggled their fingers. Aria was at the end of her rope, and she let go.

She yelled and she screamed and she shook her arms. She stomped and she shouted. And finally, Aria stood up for herself, nicely. Because sometimes, “nicely” gets you what you want.

No. It’s such a simple word: two letters, one sound, one unambiguous meaning. It can be pretty powerful when used in the right situation, and in “Don’t Touch My Hair!” your child will learn that it’s a perfectly good word to say.

And yet, learning to use “No,” isn’t all your child will get here: this book also conveys deep appreciation for one’s assets, which is doubly important at a time when African American girls may struggle with curlyhair issues. Author Sharee Miller gives her little heroine total pride in her “soft and bouncy” locks, and that’s contagious.

It almost hurts, later on, when Aria physically hides herself.
