GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

I called a couple of friends today that I have not heard from for a while.

One of them I realize I have not heard from since the Pandemic started and I know he had most of the risk factors.

During this Pandemic I have spoken to more people I know in the past 7 months than I have probably spoken to in a couple of years. I have heard from people I have not spoken to in a couple of decades. I am always glad to hear from someone I have not heard from because that means they are ok and that makes my day. I speak to my family members often needing to know they are all being safe. My mom told me she is glad I am not in Savannah Georgia with her because then no one would visit her. She is 89 years old and has COPD, Bronchitis and a number of other health issues.

Although I cannot be there in person I try my best to get on her nerves by phone and I also call my sisters and other relatives and ask them not to visit her, just leave stuff for her at the door.

I look forward to the days when we can meet at nightclubs and black tie events. However, right now I am OK doing Zoom and getting better at it. Stay Safe.

We had planned to have our Women Business Owners networking event on October 15th at the Alhambra Ballroom. Obviously that is not going to happen since we usually have more than 200 women participate. Therefore we are planning to connect via Zoom and asking the women to produce a 1-2 minute video so we can promote their products/ services during our Zoom event. If you are a woman who owns a business uptown between 96th Street to 155th Street send us a video and your email so that we can send you the link to participate. Send video to harlemnewsinc@aol.com. I know that we all are aware how important it is for us to vote in November. Plan to do what you have to do to get your vote in. Plan to vote early. Mail in your ballot if you must, however, you ought not to be able to sleep at night if you fail to vote.

USHER’S NEW LOOK ANNOUNCES NATIONAL VOTING REGISTRATION INITIATIVE AND FALL 2020 EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS

W

ith one in 10 eligible voters now between the ages of 18 and 23 – an estimated 73 million voters of color, and as millions of children and young adults across the nation prepare to return to school in the face of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the new protocols it necessitates, Usher’s New Look (UNL) announced its fall 2020 educational programming that marks its most extensive back-toschool initiative since the Foundation launched 21 years ago. A major highlight of the robust fall curriculum and programs

is the relaunch of UNL’s groundbreaking I Can’t, But You Can campaign, a youth-led voter registration and awareness initiative designed to equip young people between the ages of 12-19 with educational insights about democracy and the democratic process. I Can’t, But You Can also offers youth various opportunities to impact upcoming elections, with the goal of impacting policies and positive outcomes in their communities across the counTry. In light of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the campaign has been re-

imagined into a predominantly virtual experience, launched on Thursday, September 24 (Registration Link). Among the topics to be covered are: the definition of democracy and how it is exercised in the U.S.; a review of voting rights and the Constitution; the importance and impact of voting on federal, local, and state levels; a thorough review and explanation of the Presidential election process; and an analysis of how technology and social media platforms can be leveraged to increase awareness and voter turnout. The launch event will also feature

live performances and opportunities for participants to engage in virtual fellowship and collaborative activities.

Originally launched in 2008, UNL’s I Can’t, But You Can campaign harnesses the power and energy of young people to increase the number of registered voters around the country. “Usher’s New Look is proud to re-launch our I Can’t, But You Can campaign to help our young people become better informed about democracy and the democratic process,” says Careshia Moore, president and CEO of Usher’s New Look.”

“Now more than ever, young people have the power to impact change.

The Clubs will allow more students throughout the world to engage with the Usher’s New Look curriculum that currently serves over 150 students each year.

n Saturday, September 26th, starting at 3333 Broadway (corner of W. 135th and Broadway), NYS Assembly Member Inez E. Dickens and the NAACP Mid-Manhattan in a “Slow Walk” participated in a Rally that included Manhattanville and Grant Houses.

The event was filled with activities, including Census information and early Voting instruction. Their goal was to bring continued awareness around the need to support our communities as we fight for continued funding and the importance of the upcoming 2020 election.

Report Reveals Alarming Amount of Systemic Police and Prosecutorial Misconduct

n Jan. 21, 2011, former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge was sentenced to four and a half years in federal prison for perjury and obstruction of justice because he lied under oath about his use of torture to extract confessions from numerous criminal suspects, overwhelmingly Black men.

Burge was fired in 1993 and was prosecuted only for lying in a civil case. He served more than four years in prison and died in 2018 In 1987, when Ken Anderson was District Attorney of Williamson County, Texas, he successfully prosecuted Michael Morton for murdering his wife, Christine.

In 2011, DNA testing of a bandana found near the crime scene identified the actual killer.

The District Attorney’s Office had successfully resisted testing that bandana for many years. Morton spent 24 years in prison for a crime that he did not commit – a crime that was itself an unspeakable tragedy for him and his family.

The real killer went on to bludgeon another woman to death in 1988. Anderson himself was disgraced. He pled guilty to contempt of court, spent four days in jail, was disbarred, and was forced to resign from the position he later held as a judge.

In the report titled, “Government Misconduct and Convicting the Innocent: The Role of Prosecutors, Police and other Law Enforcement,” the National Registry of Exonerations examined more than 2,400 cases nationally which measured the role of government misconduct in wrongful convictions and how African Americans specifically suffer from those actions.

The study found that 54 percent of official misconduct involved corruption or negligence by police, prosecutors, lab workers, or other government employees.

The authors – which included researchers from the Newkirk Center for Science at the University of California, Irving, the University of Michigan Law School, and the Michigan State University College of Law – cautioned that “the tally is very likely a vast undercount of the actual number of instances in which misconduct has led to the convictions of innocent people.”

They outlined that many who’ve been wrongly convicted –including those who pleaded guilty to low-level crimes – did not have the necessary resources or legal counsel.

“If these systemic problems are corrected, misconduct is less likely to occur – and when it does happen, more likely to be counteracted before innocent people are condemned.”

Overall, Black defendants’ exonerations have a slightly higher rate of misconduct than those of white defendants, 57 percent to 52 percent.

But the differences are more significant for murder cases (78 percent to 64 percent) – especially those with death sentences (87 percent to 68 percent) – and drug crime exonerations (47 percent to 22 percent).

The study concluded that official misconduct falls into five general categories: Witness tampering occurred in about 17 percent of exonerations.

Misconduct in interrogations occurred in 57 percent of all exonerations with false confessions or about 7 percent of all cases.

Fabricating evidence happened in about 10 percent of cases, in three forms: Forensic fraud – in 3 percent of exonerations, police officers or forensic analysts lied about forensic evidence.

Fake crimes – in 4 percent of exonerations, police planted drugs or guns on innocent suspects, or lied and said the suspects had assaulted them.

Fictitious confessions – in about 2 percent of exonerations, officers fabricated confessions from defendants who did not confess.

At trial, misconduct occurred in about 23 percent of exonerations, about evenly divided between perjury by law enforcement officers, 13 percent, and trial misconduct by prosecutors, 14 percent (with some overlap).

Misconduct in interrogations occurr “We rarely have access to transcripts or other detailed information about trial testimony, so we only learn about perjury at trial if it becomes a conspicuous issue.”

In 1959, the Supreme Court held that a prosecutor has a constitutional obligation to correct perjury by a state witness even if she did not herself offer the false testimony.

However, researchers discovered that prosecutors permitted perjury to go uncorrected in 8 percent of exonerations. In most cases, the perjury was by civilian witnesses.

The most common lies were about the favorable treatment the witnesses receive in pending criminal cases of their own.

“We know that prosecutors lied in court in 4 percent of exonerations. The real rate may be higher since we only count cases with clear evidence that prosecutors made statements they knew were false,” the researchers noted further.

They said about half of lies by prosecutors were made in a closing argument with a common pattern of repeating and affirming perjury by a witness that the prosecutor knew about but failed to correct – for example, a lie by a witness who claimed to have no deal with the prosecutor.

Federal prosecutors committed misconduct in exonerations more than twice as often as police (52 percent to 20 percent), while state prosecutors committed misconduct less often than police (29 percent to 36 percent).

This week in a board meeting, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve approved its

draft Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) on the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). In May, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency finalized its CRA rule, while the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) has yet to join an agency in finalizing a CRA rule.

Combatting Cybersecurity Threats of the COVID-19 Era

N

ew data reveals that in uncertain times, consumers and businesses need even greater vigilance when it comes to their cybersecurity.

The mid-year update to the 2020 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report highlights an opportunistic use of the COVID-19 pandemic by cybercriminals.

“Cybercriminals can be resourceful, often setting traps to take advantage of people’s kindness and panic in uncertain times, as well as their trust in everyday systems,” says Bill Conner, SonicWall president and CEO. “With everyone more remote and mobile than ever before, the cybercriminal industry is very aware that businesses are highly exposed.”

Shifting Threats During the first half of 2020, global malware attacks

fell from 4.8 billion to 3.2 billion over 2019’s mid-year total, a continuation of a downward trend. However, less malware doesn’t necessarily mean a safer world; ransomware has seen a corresponding jump over the same time period and continues to be the preferred tool for cybercriminals. Increasing a staggering 20% globally in the first half of 2020, SonicWall logged 79.9 million ransomware attacks (+109%) in the U.S., a trend that continues to ebb and flow based on the behaviors of agile cybercriminal networks.

COVID-19 Email Scams The global pandemic plus social-engineered cyberattacks has proven to be an effective mix for cybercriminals utilizing phishing and other email scams. Dating as far back as Feb. 4, SonicWall researchers detected a flurry of increased

attacks, scams and exploits specifically based around COVID-19. This contrasts with phishing as a whole, which was down slightly by the time pandemic phishing attempts began picking up steam.

Cybercriminals were quick to leverage this shift. OP-ED: The United States Postal Service Delivers Much More Than Mail

merica’s Postal service has been an essential institution that has connected every one of us as Americans even before we were a nation independent of Great Britain.

The most American of traditions Benjamin Franklin was appointed our first Postmaster General in 1775. This democratic treasure, which has proven as reliable as it has self-sufficient, was a model for how government service should work. Its rich history is America’s history of adaptability, ingenuity and grit. Franklin used the system to get mail from Congress to our armies during the Revolution. In 1823, the service started using waterways to deliver mail, then began using railroads and in 1847 saw the first issued stamps. The famous Pony Express took up the task in 1860. By 1896, the service began delivering to some rural addresses, so people did not have to go to the town post office for their mail anymore. By 1923, all houses were required to have a mail slot. And in 1963, zip codes were introduced.

Also very American, a 1970 strike by organized labor led to an even more efficient operation and the Postal Reorganization Act that established the United States Postal Service as we know it today.

And true to its roots, the revitalized United States Postal Service (USPS) knew how to make a buck.

The reorganization legisla-

tion called for the phasing out of the post office’s direct government subsidies by 1983. The post office has been operating without any taxpayer money since then.

In fact, as recent as the start of this century, from 20032006, and despite the advent of email and stiff competition from companies like UPS and FedEx, the post office reported a 9.3 billion profit.

I would say that is a pretty decent business model.

But then HR 6407 came along in 2007. The act mandated that the post office calculate its retiree pension and healthcare costs for the next 75 years, including workers to come, and set aside enough over the next 10 years to cover them. An article appearing in Business Insider put the impact of the requirement this way: “To put this in perspective, that’d be like you only working from age 18 to 28 and then expecting to live on that income until you were 103 years old.”

What would Ben Franklin say?

Needless to say, the bill and its contents have proven devastating. The long and the short of it has meant that the USPS has had to contribute about $5.6 billion a year for people who had not yet retired, in addition to the amount for current retirees.

No business is forced to operate like this, and I dare to add that no business could operate like this.

Also, the new bill took away the ability for the post office to set prices. First-

class mail, marketing mail, and other post office products have all been tied to the consumer price index, and therefore the post office could not increase rates for those products above the rate of inflation. All told, the post office has incurred a loss of $78 billion from 2007 through 2019 and owes $55 billion related to its future pension and health benefit obligations. Add in lost revenue related to COVID-19 and politically charged controversies over reductions in equipment and attendant slowdowns, the USPS is now in dire straits.

Shall we really allow this most American of institutions to fail ‒ through no fault of its own? It is unthinkable for it not to survive. It is unthinkable to rely solely on private companies for such critical services. It is truly a dagger in the heart of our American heritage.

Of immediate consequence, consider the impact to mail recipients during this pandemic. The USPS handles 1.2 billion prescription drug deliveries each

year. The service also transports millions of lab tests and essential medical supply shipments. It ensures that checks and payments arrive to keep small businesses operating. It helps seniors receive household items, social security and Medicare checks. And communications from family and friends from far away have been delivered on time, through as they say “rain, sleet and snow.”

Since the emergence of COVID-19, USPS workers have been on the front lines, delivering millions of personal protective equipment and vital supplies to hospitals. They’ve made sure shelters, food banks, and businesses have the supplies they need. In addition, they’ve made deliveries to home-bound, highly susceptible individuals.

Needed now more than ever The notion to privatize the USPS is a truly un-American idea and could not come at a worse time. The recession we are experiencing due to the coronavirus is hitting Black Americans much harder

than white Americans, with Blacks nearly three times more likely to be hospitalized for Covid-19 and their unemployment rate at 14.6% compared with 9.2% for whites.

The Postal Service provides the only service that guarantees delivery to every American, which makes it especially crucial for rural areas and small towns that are too costly for private companies like FedEx or UPS to deliver to. Privatizing the service would add to the expense of crucial deliveries ‒ at a time when we are more and more relying on deliveries to receive our daily needs.

Then think about the importance of the post office in ensuring that the people’s will in our democracy will be accurately and duly noted. In November, the postal service will play a crucial role in allowing Americans across our land and in foreign countries to cast their vote in our upcoming Presidential election. So many of us will be turning to the USPS to deliver our ballots safely and securely.

And please also think of

the USPS and those in its employ. The postal service has delivered a solid, secure, middle class lifestyle to a more than 600,000 workers and to an especially high number of Latino and African Americans.

In the case of African Americans, when Congress passed a law ‒ just after the Civil War ‒ that ended the whites only hiring practice for postal jobs, the postal service became a haven of good jobs offering secure wages, benefits, and civil service protections. Today, African Americans make up 27% of the Postal Service ‒ a rate more than double that of the national labor force.

Coupled with our government’s anti-discrimination policies, the USPS has made the American Dream possible, even when racial discrimination put up walls in other areas of work.

And privatization, I would argue, is un-American for another reason. It is yet another attempt at union busting. Both the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), which represents primarily non-rural letter carriers employed by USPS as well as the American Postal Workers Union (APWU), which represents postal clerks, mail processors and sorters, building and equipment maintenance, custodial workers, truck drivers and others employed by USPS, would be in serious jeopardy.

We must secure this most American of all American institutions.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Does It Again and Raises $1 Million in Support of HBCUs - Online Donations Help Sorority to Exceed Its Goal

A

lpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated announced that for the third consecutive year, the sorority has successfully raised $1 million in 24 hours for the benefit of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The sorority’s annual HBCU Impact Day on September 21 exceeded its $1 million goal in online donations alone from local AKA chapters, private donors and corporate matching dollars from across the globe.

“We did it, we did it again!” Dr. Glenda Glover, AKA International Presi-

dent and Chief Executive Officer shared with excitement in a video message to sorority members. “The online receipts alone totaled more than $1.3 million. We can now continue to provide endowments to our treasured HBCUs.” HBCU Impact Day is one part of a four-year $10 million fundraising goal set by Dr. Glover, who has challenged the women of AKA to lead the charge in helping to secure fiscal sustainability and success for accredited HBCUs around the country. The sorority was successfully able to

reach the $1 million goal consecutively in 2018 and 2019, supporting the organization’s HBCU for Life: A Call to Action platform, which aims to promote HBCUs by encouraging students to attend and matriculate through these institutions.

Last year, AKA gifted $1.6 million to the first 32 of 96 HBCUs through the AKA-HBCU Endowment Fund. Each HBCU received $50,000 in unrestricted endowment funds as part of a phased approach to help schools reduce student debt through scholarships, fund industry-specific research,

recruit and retain top faculty, and other critical operations especially during this global pandemic.

On Sunday, September 20, the sorority held a virtual brunch to launch the next round of 32 HBCU endowment recipients.

Four more recipients were announced: Delaware State University, Lane College, St. Phillips College, and Medgar Evers College.

Four additional grants will be announced on Friday, September 25, the last day of HBCU Week. The sorority will then announce 24 more recipients — six schools every Thursday for

the next four weeks.

“These institutions continue to make a powerful impact in our communities and throughout our country, graduating 22% of all African Americans with bachelor’s degrees, nearly 80% of all African-American judges and 50% of all black lawyers,” said Dr. Glover, who is also the president of Tennessee State University and an HBCU graduate.

“It’s gratifying to know that funds raised will establish endowments, providing sustainability to our historically black colleges and universities.”

any people deal with foot and ankle concerns by simply ignoring them, hoping the problem goes away. However, certain symptoms could be a sign of a serious condition, warn experts.

“A foot and ankle surgeon has the right education and training to provide preventive care and early intervention, which remain essential, even in the age of COVID-19 when you may be avoiding in-person visits,” says Jeffrey D. Loveland, DPM, FACFAS, foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

To help you determine when it’s time to consult a specialist, ACFAS is offering insights into symptoms that affect the foot or ankle and

frequently are signs of serious medical conditions: • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): DVT is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most commonly in calves or thighs. Potentially very dangerous, DVT can lead to a pulmonary embolism.

• Charcot Foot: Charcot foot, a severe diabetes complication, is a sudden softening of the foot’s bones caused by neuropathy. It can trigger an avalanche of problems, including joint loss, fractures, collapse of the arch, massive deformity,

ulcers, amputation and even death. Charcot foot cannot be reversed, but its destructive effects can be stopped. Symptoms appear suddenly and can include warm and red skin, swelling and pain.

• Ulcers: Not only is a foot ulcer a painful condition which can lead to amputation, it can be indicative of several

underlying ailments, which are critical to diagnose and treat, including diabetes, circulatory problems and issues with the mechanics of the foot or leg. Telltale signs that an ulcer may be brewing are swelling, temperature changes in the feet, color changes and calluses.

Pain Management

ain is a warning signal that something is wrong. It is necessary to protect the body. There are many different types of pain: throbbing, cutting, piercing, dull or paralyzing which is probably the worst kind of pain. The International Association for the Study of Pain defines it as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.”

The Institute of Medicine of The National Academies tells us that over 100-million Americans suffer from chronic pain. One in three Americans are affected by one of more than 100 types of arthritis which usually results in many different degrees of pain. Over 12-million women suffer from pain caused by Fibromyalgia. Studies show that 50-70% of patients die in moderate to severe pain.

Pain is perceived by receptors of sensory neurons called Nociceptors that respond to potentially damaging stimuli by sending signals to the spinal cord and brain.

This process is called nociception which usually signals the perception of pain. Nerve cells send signals to our brain telling us that something is wrong. If you place your

hand on something extremely hot for example, the nociceptors will send a signal to your spinal cord and brain making you remove your hand.

Like it or not pain, is a vital part of the body’s survival mechanisms. The body has two important mechanisms that are associated with pain: the signal that creates the sensation of pain and the endorphins that relieve the pain.

The allopathic approach to pain management is the use of prescription drugs: opiates such as Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycodone, and Morphine.

The problem with prescription painkillers is that they are a major contributor to many drug deaths. There is a direct correlation between America’s pain management issue and the current Opioid epidemic in the United States.

Most of the pain management prescription drugs are opiate based because studies have shown that endorphins have been the most effective form of pain relief. Your body, however, can create endorphins for natural opiates.

hings could always be worse.

You didn’t sleep well last night, your day started earlier than usual, and traffic, ugh; then you forgot your lunch and lost a bag of chips in a vending machine, and you never did catch up. You had a rotten day but look on the bright side: you’re above ground and breathing and, as in “We’re Better Than This” by Elijah Cummings with James Dale, someone had your back.

Throughout most of his life, Elijah Cummings’ parents were his

guidelights.

“Neither had much education,” he wrote; they were sharecroppers who moved north so that their children could have better opportunities and they motivated Cummings to become a lawyer, Civil Rights worker, and a Congressman. They in-

spired him to serve, he said, and “I believe that is why I was put on this earth.”

His service began early but his biggest “fight... for our democracy” began in 2017, following his first meeting with the newly-inaugurated president. Cummings be-

lieved that despite their fundamental differences, Trump had listened then, and understood the needs of Cummings’ constitutents, especially in reference to the cost of prescription drugs. Instead, Cummings’ words were dismissed and nothing happened.

Though not the type to carry a grudge, Cummings never forgot.

When he was asked to serve on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform two years later, his first thought was for the American people, and the responsibility that his position as chair of the Committee demanded.

The Trump Administration, he said, had had no

real oversight until then, and he hoped to rectify that. He still had a passion for lowering prescription drugs, but his new position demanded a broader scope of attention.

In months to come, that would include a fight to keep important words off the 2020 Census. It included mentoring and guiding freshman Representatives. And it included the groundwork for impeachment proceedings that Cummings did not live long enough to see.

Writing literally as he was dying, author Elijah Cummings began his book with two people who appear frequently in it: his parents. From there, he sparkles as a storyteller, sharing vivid memories that are both personal and professional, and that give readers a sharp sense of what drove him. This part speaks volumes about Cummings himself.

It’s hard not to be thrilled as he proceeds to his recollections of what happened while he was chair of the Oversight Committee: riveted as we were by it, Cummings’ account of the drama offers further behind-the-scenes peeks at, and his thoughts on, those proceedings.

Wisdom, a charming ownership of his constituents, some well-deserved back-patting, and an awareness of his impending death add further luster.

In his introduction, co-author James Dale writes about his friendship with Cummings, and about finishing this inspiring read without him. That alone is poignant; the rest is insightful; and reading “We’re Better Than This” is really the best idea.
