Queens Black Fraternity Brothers Operate Senior Citizen Center

I

n 1973 the members of Zeta Zeta Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. realized the need for a recreational, educational and cultural program for the growing senior population in the Cambria Heights community. Seeking a vehicle that would provide an opportunity to give back to the community in which they were raised and nurtured, the Alphas hit upon the idea of sponsoring a senior citizens center. After several meetings with other community organizations, church and civic leaders, the fraternity moved to create and incorporate the non-profit entity known as the Alpha Phi Alpha Senior Citizens Center, Inc. On March 17, 1975 the center officially opened its doors to service the seniors

of the community, in rented space in the basement of the Cambria Heights Community Church and began functioning under contract with the New York City Human Resource Administration. The center had for its main objective the enabling of its members to maintain their independence in the community by providing a family type setting in which a wide range of services could be made available.

The mission of the Alpha Phi Alpha Senior Citizens Center is to provide a multi-purpose facility and services for seniors in our community that will enhance their quality of life. We promote physical well-being of seniors in our community through nutrition, education and health with our programs.

We are also here to help the

community benefit from resources in knowledge, experience, wisdom, skill, concern, energy and service of its older and seasoned residents.

The program revolves around a nutritionally balanced meal served five days a week at lunchtime.

Construction waxed and waned over the next several years in accordance with the availability of capital funds. Finally, in November of 2006, the Center officially began operations at the new site. Since that time the Center’s membership has more than doubled necessitating an increase in activities, services and educational experiences.

Tax counseling, driver education classes along with computer, arts and crafts, sewing and quilting classes are now offered on a regular basis.

MetroPlus Opens Harlem Office with Halloween Fun Marisol Rodríguez

etroPlus celebrated the official opening of its Harlem community office with a Halloween street fest for families in front of their new space at 2104 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, between 125 and 126 streets. It couldn’t have been better weather to enjoy the fun activities the health-care provider organized for the community.

Children dressed in a variety of costumes (unicorn, Warcraft knight, Cleopatra and more) enjoyed face-painting, a photo booth, fresh popcorn, candy, slinkies and music provided

by Hot 97’s DJ Tumbo. Adults took advantage of the free health screenings and information on health and nutrition resources in the community.

DJ Tumbo. He noted that the event was a “success” because of “how humble everyone is” and the opportunity it created for kids to have fun that doesn’t involve cell phones or electronics.

“Being in Harlem, you get the essence of being a kid again,” he said.

The Harlem Office is the expansion of a vision MetroPlus had to bring direct services to communities throughout the city, explained MetroPlus Chief Growth Officer Roger Milliner.

Assemblyman Al Taylor also stopped by to welcome MetroPlus and share fun times with the families. Taylor was enthusiastic about the Harlem office and the work it will be doing to serve the community: “It can’t be over said how much we need health coverage in communities of color.”

n October 30 the 125th St. BID hosted a press conference and mixer at Savanna Raes Restaurant, 2070 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd., for supporters, sponsors and participants in the anticipated event Barbara Askins announced at the press event that the kick off to the holiday season in Harlem officially begins on Thursday, November 15 with the 25th annual Harlem Holiday Lights Illumination of 125th Street from Fifth Avenue to Twelfth Avenue with beautifully special designed skylines for 125th Street and the 6th Annual Parade of Lights. The event is produced by 125th Street Business Improvement District with it partners Community Boards 9 and 10. Harlem’s own Dapper Dan will be the Grand Marshal.

The theme this year is “A Healthy Harlem Holiday”. The major focus is encouraging a healthy community through locations along 125th Street providing free health screenings and health care information from providers.

Celebrating 25 years and Planning for the Future at Annual 125th Street BID Meeting

ommunity leaders, elected officials and community stakeholders came together at the majestic Alhambra Ballroom on October 10th for the 25th annual 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID) meeting.

President and CEO of the 125th Street BID Barbara Askins explained the theme of this year’s annual meeting Bizznifi: Conversations that should be had: “This is very significant for us as it is the kick off for a new initiative that will move frank conversations into mainstream community building,” said Ms. Askins.

“Tasemere Gathers, Director of Programs and Economic Development, will be looking to have deeper conversations with those who live, work, visit and invest in 125th Street and greater Harlem. We know that we can only prepare for the future by understanding and integrating the thought patterns of the diverse audiences in Harlem into our programming,” she added.

opened the meeting with updates on the accomplishments of the year, including a think tank of local property owners who brainstormed ways to create more “synergy” in supporting each other’s Harlem businesses, as well as a collaborative workshop with Columbia University’s Urban Design Lab in which high school students used their creativity to design sustainable community projects to bring life to the Harlem area west of Morningside. Some of the teen’s innovations included using empty spaces underneath bridges for elevated gardens and a robot trash receptacles which would add money to your metrocard for recyclable bottles.

Ms. Askins announced the winners of the Healthy & Clean Harlem Campaign and gave a special thank you to Councilmember William Perkins for providing funding to the campaign. Winners received between $25 and $300 for clean-up tools. The five winners included: • In first place, LenoxFive 127th Street Block Association, for a plan submitted

by Marilyn Byrd to encourage neighborhood children, ages of 4 and 10, to respect

the community by keeping it clean.

• In second place, Harlem Dowling, for a plan submitted by Jackie Delgado to get the community out to clean branches and garbage from the park’s paths.

• In third place, the West 135th Street Block Association, for a plan submitted by Rose Seabrook to educate and engage residents and property owners around keeping the neighborhood “safe, clean, habitable and beautiful.”

• In fourth place, New Mount Zion Baptist Church (171 W. 140th St.), for a plan submitted by Lil Nickelson to give color to the facade of the church with the vibrant hues of flowers.

According to the Year in Review Report distributed at the meeting, there have been a number of new businesses and institutions that have opened locations on 125th street within the 2017-2018 fiscal year (FY) including Blick Art Materials,

Chipotle, P.C. Richards, Beleza Natural, Philly Pretzel Factory and the College of New Rochelle. Businesses coming in the 2018-2019 FY include Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, CVS Pharmacy, Shake Shack, Spectrum and The Cliffs, an indoor rock climbing experience. The report also showed data on pedestrian traffic along 125th Street, which increased between 4.4 and 19.3 percent on all days of the week, except Sunday.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer addressed the audience introducing the panel discussion, or “conversations that should be had” on Harlem churches and development, which was moderated by Laurence Pinckney, associate broker for R New York.

Linda Heinberg, Assistant Attorney General working in the Charities Bureau of the NY State Office, also presented on faith based real estate development transactions which are overseen by her office. She advised churches to spend time investigating the developers and their proposed projects.

She also offered a list of ways churches can prepare for a future sale.

Amputations and Diabetes

S

urely you’ve noticed someone on the street, on the bus, in your building, who’s lost toes, part of a foot or

even a leg – amputated, most likely, due to diabetic wounds that became infected and could not be healed.

If you have diabetes, you can develop a foot ulcer.

It’s an open sore, or wound, that usually occurs on the bottom of the foot. Diabetics who have neuropathy (which can cause reduced sensation), poor circulation to the feet, uncontrolled blood sugar, or wear ill-fitting shoes are at high risk. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and high cholesterol add more risk. Checking your feet daily – be-

tween the toes as well as the sole -- is critical to your ability to prevent ulcers or spot problems early.

Most amputations of the foot or leg are due to diabetes (other causes are poor circulation, accidents or trauma). Foot ulcers precede 85% of diabetes-related amputations, according to a national podiatric medical organization – but diabetic foot ulcers are not inevitable. In fact, they are preventable.

First, if you’re diabetic, a podiatrist should be an active partner in your care.

You must see your podiatrist at the first indication of a foot problem, no matter how small. The doctor’s goal will be to help you heal as quickly as possible.

Podiatrists are knowledgeable and have many resources that can help prevent infections, heal wounds and save limbs, but patients must follow their directions to the letter and, do their parts as well.

In addition to checking your feet daily, what else can you do to help avoid diabetic foot ulcers and perhaps an ampu-

tation?

• Stop smoking - It can narrow small blood vessels and cause decreased blood flow to the feet.

• Never walk barefoot - Even indoors, even on carpeting.

• Lower your blood sugar - Learn how to change your diet and monitor your sugar level to bring it down.

• Ensure that your shoes fit properly and do not rub or squeeze your feet.

Check shoes daily for small objects or tears in the lining.

• Never cut calluses or corns yourself.

WELLNESS • Never treat small wounds yourself, even if they don’t hurt. You might have neuropathy and be unable to feel the wound.

• Check your feet daily – I can’t say that enough.

No one wants an amputation, and your partner, the podiatrist, is dedicated to preventing that outcome.
