Health Advocate George Hulse The New VP At Emblem Health

eorge Hulse has spent the better part of 20 years advocating for the health of New Yorkers.

He’s a familiar face to many in New York City, hosting town hall meetings with seniors, encouraging youth in NYCHA housing to reach for the stars and working with elected officials to advance the city’s health outcomes.

And at 74, the Harlem resident is showing no sign of slowing down.

Hulse was recently named vice president and senior advisor to CEO Karen Ignagni of Emblem Health following a career

that spanned two decades at HealthFirst. In his new role, Hulse will be working to educate and engage the nonprofit health plan’s more than 3 million mem-

“I’m not trying to change the action,” Hulse said. “That hasn’t worked.

Hulse gives special priority to healthcare issues like domestic violence prevention, senior citizen health and wellness and preventing violence among young people.

Besides his career in healthcare, the grandfather serves on several NYC area nonprofit boards, including Boy Scouts of America, the Friends of Harlem Hospital and the American Diabetes Association. Hulse - who has 70 to 80 hours work week - said his inspiration to serve others comes in part from his father, who was raised in Belize and always reminded him to be grateful to live in America.

“I will continue to be a very active advocate for healthcare and wellness for the residents of New York City and New York State,” Hulse said. “My role is to show the way to healthcare.”

Queens Latimer House Museum Exhibit Energy of Place - Lloyd X Latimer

he Lewis Howard Latimer House Museum is currently hosting an exhibition that highlights Tom Lloyd, a multi-genre artist who founded the first African American museum in Queens.

“Energy of Place: Lloyd X Latimer” is on display at the Flushing landmark from February 16th, 2019 until May 18th, 2019. Lewis Latimer’s wood frame, two-story residence with Queen Anne style architecture is located at 34-41 137th St, Flushing, NY 11354.

The brainchild of Antonio Serna, “Energy of Place” features an installation consisting of diagrammatic drawings, attempts at creating a catalog of Lloyd’s light sculptures, silver print collages of documents comparing Lloyd’s activities to those of his contemporaries, and a large photo collage looking at the visual

connections between Lloyd and Latimer.

Add to this an ongoing, self-reflective video during which Serna seeks to expand the definition of “Energy of Place,” looking at the energy that emanates from within historically important places for people of color to that which is required to establish and maintain such places. In addition, Serna, a Texas native with Mexican heritage,

will organize a series of public events with notable scholars and community members at Latimer House through May. The story of the Latimer House is connected to this history through the efforts of Tom Lloyd and African-American artists and activist, who formed part of the Committee to Save Latimer House. Tom Lloyd was part of a legacy of artists of color who for over two decades

fought to create and hold cultural space where Black artists and communities of color can celebrate their cultural contributions to society.

Lloyd founded The Store Front Museum, which operated in Jamaica and Hollis from 1971 to 1988. (Its materials are archived at Queens Library.) He also wrote frequently about his desire for art to influence social and political action.

Latimer (1848–1928) was an African-American who helped Thomas A. Edison and Alexander Graham Bell invent electricity and the telephone. Latimer, the son of escaped slaves, invented a method of manufacturing the carbon filament, a key component of the electric light bulb, in 1881. He was born in Boston and was self-educated. When he was a teenager, he joined the Union Navy and

later in life worked with Alexander Graham Bell and played an important role in helping him design the telephone. He also worked for Thomas Edison for many years.

Latimer lived in Flushing from 1903 to his death in 1928. His house, which was in the Latimer family until his daughter’s death in 1963, was originally located on Holly Avenue, but in 1988, a group of community activists had it moved to its present location to escape demolition. After a long, expensive restoration process, the house was reopened in June 1999.

“Energy of Place” is part of “Documents of Resistance: Artists of Color Protest (1960s–present),” Serna’s larger art/research/educational project that engages the public via exhibition, presentation, and workshop.

His own clients include hip-hop tastemakers such as rapper Big Sean, producer Metro Boomin and Instagram star Chicklet. Not bad considering that when Mendoza started out, no urban barber shops would hire him. “They didn’t know what to make of me, an Asian kid doing street style,” said Mendoza, who is Filipino-American that was born in Honolulu and attended The High School for Arts and Business in Corona, Queens.

He spent much of his childhood at his mother’s beauty salon in Queens. By age 17, he was into hip-hop culture. “I wanted the Nas haircut, but my mom didn’t know how to do it,” he said, referring to the distinctive cut with a half-moon part popularized by the rapper in

the late 1990s. Frustrated, he got a pair of salon scissors and started cutting his own hair. Classmates took notice, and soon Mendoza was giving cuts at his kitchen sink for $5 a head. “I had a pager and a cellphone,” he said. “I was in business!”

His mother, annoyed by the weekly line of kids in her house, shooed him out to get his barber’s license.

Mendoza began developing his technique of combining salon-level scissor skills with barbers’ clipper skills.

“We are barber-stylists,” he says of his team.

In 2006 he took over his mom’s Woodside storefront and turned it into the Filthy Rich Barber Shop, where a rap-heavy soundtrack plays for young clients, who show off their sharp new cuts on social media. Bolder cli-

ents have let him shave the New York City skyline. A heart-shaped design recently got 24,000 views on Instagram. Demand led him to open a second shop in 2016, in Williamsburg, with a classic soul and jazz vibe that draws business types, artists and celebrities.

He’s constantly going to clubs and meeting DJs, promoters and staff members from hip-hop-culture magazines. He used to style celebrities for free to build up

the Filthy Rich brand. Now Chase, Puma, T-Mobile and others pay him for collaborations. “After 10 years of filthiness,” he said, “I’m trying to get 10 years of the richness.”

n January barber Rich Mendoza made his first business trip to Dubai— to cut the hair of a 24-yearold soccer pro and Saudi prince. It was the barber’s first business-class flight, on the high-end Emirates airline. “Now, that’s some luxury,” said Mendoza, known professionally as Rich the Barber. Mendoza will travel to clients, for a fee: at least $2,400 per day, or twice what he would bill working a full day at the shop, plus travel expenses.

arlier this Month, U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) reintroduced a bill directing Congress to commission a statue of former U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm to be displayed in the United States Capitol. Currently, there are four statues and busts in the United State Capitol representing African-Americans, including Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Sojourner Truth.

Companion legislation will also be introduced today in the House of Representatives by Rep. Yvette Clarke (DNY).

“For the first time in history, there are more than 20 Black women serving in the United State Congress—and we all stand on the

shoulders of Shirley Chisholm,” said Senator Harris. “Shirley’s legacy inspires us to continue our fight to give a voice to the voiceless and pursue justice and equality for every American. Her legacy deserves to stand tall in the United States Capitol.”

Film Review: Black Mother

T

hink of this non-fiction film as a meditation and it makes perfect sense. Try and squeeze it into a standard documentary frame and it just doesn’t conform.

At the helm is Khalik Allah, whose most commercial endeavor was his work as a cinematographer and second unit director for Beyonce’s famed Lemonadevideo (2016). His first documentary,Field Niggas(2015),chronicled the lives of folks on 125thStreet and Lexington Avenue in Harlem, NY. It was a string of snippets that were more like kinetic photographs. Which makes sense because Allah was a photographer before he turned his lens to motion pictures.

The location for Black Mother is Allah’s ancestral homeland of Jamaica. The format is a string of images and scenes that tourists don’t see

on perfectly curated sightseeing trips. The first two parts of this trinary, 77-minute collage require great patience. The focus is on sex workers, their potential johns, street vendors and impoverished people— some with grotesque deformities (a neck cyst the size of a basketball; a bare arm missing a hand; a hole in the middle of a face with the depth of a crater). The visuals are often sobering, if not shocking. Mixed in are clips of nude women, some are pregnant, and other scenes.

The audio track with narration doesn’t always match up with the images on view. If audiences get lost in the deluge of disjointed impressions and sporadic thoughts and lose interest, you can’t blame them.

This isn’t linear storytelling, or a traditionally arranged trail of facts. Casual viewers will

scratch their heads. Serious ones will stick with it long enough to see the correlation between what’s on screen and the trimesters of a pregnancy.

The reward for finding the discipline to sit through Allah’s kaleidoscope of HD video, mini DV, 16mm, Hi8 Tape and Super 8 footage are glimpses of Jamaica that convey harsh realism, history, social dynamics, religion, African heritage, prostitution, birth, families, dying and death. Landscapes of verdant mountains. Bustling street scenes. The insides of sacred churches during funerals. A man galloping on a horse

through a neighborhood. This is Allah’s Jamaica, not the one in the fancy Come to Jamaicacommercials. This is his sermon. His camera ministry.

Allah has a perfect eye for composition, color and natural lighting. Many filmmakers are journeymen, able to work their craft. A few are artists, who, if they had a different calling, would be painters, sculptors or poets. This New York-born director fits into the latter category. As the son of a Jamaican mother and Iranian father, he exhibits skills and viewpoints many directors could never fathom. It will be curious to see if he can ever harness his unconventional filmic style and

make a cohesive fiction-based feature film, without negating his aesthetics. Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos made a very successful transition from his esoteric art to creating The Favourite. It’s possible.

The last section of the Black Mothersegues from the poorest neighborhoods in Jamaica to a middle- and working-class family, the kind of people who are the heart and soul of the island/nation. There is an absolutely beautiful and arty sequence where Allah’s camera captures ocean waves from high above, that ebb and flow with white water caps appearing and disappearing. If the film finds an anchor to its

puzzling array it is here.

An older man named William Case is at the end of his life’s journey. He’s obviously a very enlightened and religious man who leaves behind a philosophy that is immensely profound. Case says: “If you live a wretched life, boisterous and sinful, you will die in that state.

If you live a righteous life, you’ll die in a peaceful state.”

It’s a wisdom that is so right for these times. It’s a warning, too.

A very thoughtful avant-garde filmmaker pulls us into his orbit.

NEW SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY VISUAL ART EXHIBITION

new Spirit of Community exhibition opened on March 6, 2019 in the famed Mural Pavilion at the Harlem Hospital Center, 475 Malcolm X Blvd. This unique installation by Community Works and New Heritage Theater Group displays photography, artwork and poetry by many Harlem-based artists based on their views of community and defining identity.

The exhibition is on the ground floor of the hospital alongside the WPA-era murals that were the first to depict people of color at everyday professional jobs. The exhibition is built around a 30-foot timeline of

Harlem over three centuries and an introductory film about Harlem.

Participating artists include photographers Shawn Walker, Tau Battice, Ruth Morgan and David Vades Joseph and painters Bryan Collier, Paul Deo, JaSon Auguste and Tanya Torres, as well as photographs from a collection by Karen Taylor. Words from the poetry of Daniel Carlton, Karen Taylor and Willie Perdomo, will be displayed as well as photos of 2003 East Harlem from Commuinity Works’ landmark Latin Roots exhibit. Tours will be available Wednesday through Saturday

Meanwhile, planning continues towards a fall opening of a permanent home for elements of the award-winning Harlem is . . . series on Music, Theater and Dance on the hospital’s second floor outside the Cave Auditorium. There will be a series of films and educational materials produced as guides for teachers and students visiting the installation, and discussions are advancing about a website to allow visitors from afar to view the elements.

At the same time, Community Works

and New Heritage will continue to work with institutional partners in East, West and Central Harlem and into Washington Heights and Northern Manhattan to present other aspects of the harlem is . . . experience. A successful Latin Roote: East Harlem exhibition this year, for example, has prompted discussions with other institutions for contiuing displays. Later this summer, a Havana-Harlem 2019 exhibition will open at the City College Center for the Arts.

“Blacks On Broadway” Tickets Giveaway promotion!

t was a celebration on Wednesday, March 6th at El San Juan Restaurant at 1429 Fifth Avenue between 116th and 117th Streets as Pat Stevenson, publisher of the Harlem News held a launch party for the 21stst issue of Blacks on Broadway with a Broadway tickets giveaway. The intimate restaurant was filled with Harlem News readers and people who enjoyed the Blacks on Broadway issue. Stevenson spoke to the crowd and talked of the history of this piece, how in the first issue there were only 30 Black actors on Broadway, now including the swings there were 300 and she had the photos in the issue to prove it. Five pages of colored photos showed

the beautiful faces of the Black actors that are in and will be in productions on Broadway.

The crowd enjoyed appetizers and wine and got to sing happy birthday to a few of the readers that were present, including Michelle James, Sabina Brice and Denese Mars.

Aaliay Stevens, a COO at Spotco, who places advertising for Broadway shows in newspapers was on hand and picked the several people in the audience and not present that won tickets to various Broadway shows. Harlem News had people enter at the restaurant for the past two weeks, who didn’t have to be there and pulled their names for a pair of tickets to Louis Ossorio for “Aladdin,”

“Ivette Vega for “King Kong,” Jason Romero for “Aint Too Proud to Beg,” Felix Santiago for “Phantom of the Opera.,” and and Gypcee Rodriguez for “The Lion King.” There were also tickets for the off Broadway production “Miracles in Rwanda” given to those who were present at the event.

Of the people present for raffle tickets they filled out that evening were Chiquita Ross who won “The Lion King” and stated “I’m excited.” Lamont Baker won “Aladdin” tickets and proclaimed, “It’s the first thing I won in my life.” Robert Rexach won for “Frozen” and stated, “I feel good, it’s the first time I ever won something.

I’m taking my granddaughter.”

Ludmila Merka won “Phantom of the Opera” tickets and said, “I

feel excited, it’s a surprise. I’m going to take my mother.” Phyllis Dade won “King Kong” and shared, “it’s wonderful!.” Ti-

neta Newston won “Ain’t Too Proud,” and said “This is good, I’m excited.” Pat Greenidge and Donovan Anglada won tickets for the off-Broadway show “Miracle in Rwanda.”

Following the distribution of the tickets, Stevenson introduced me, Linda Armstrong, the writer for Blacks on Broadway for the Harlem News for 21 years and asked for a few words. I was happy to say that I love to support our people in theatre and I’m so glad that 21

years ago Pat came and asked me to do this. I hope everyone will see the issue and go and support our people in Broadway productions. Pat Stevenson thanked the theaters who provided tickets for the drawings.

After the drawing the crowd enjoyed “Jazz Wednesdays” at El San Juan restaurant, which happens every week.

REMEMBERING CORETTA SCOTT KING & YOLANDA DENISE KING The “Queens” Who Walked with a KING

I

n 1st Grade, I watched with my school friends, as our parents marched at the “March on Washington.” We were in the basement of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, and we were enrolled in “Freedom School”.

In 3rd Grade, I met the “Dreamer” and his wife, Coretta, in the auditorium of Hunter College in NYC. I shook Dr. King’s hand, but wrote Mrs King a letter, addressed to the address in the back of one of his books.

Mrs. King wrote back to this 3rd grader, who had shared how much I admired her.

A decade later, their eldest daughter, Yolanda, and I would meet in Massachusetts, as both of us studied theatre, and I convinced Mrs. King to let Yolanda join me, and we “backpacked” through West Africa for 8 weeks, a friendship that would last four decades.

When my mother died, Mrs. King adopted me as “her other daughter”. She invited me to preach the

last MLK service she’d attend at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

Two weeks after celebrating my 50th birthday with me, Yolanda passed.

I miss them both terribly, and this nation misses the prophetic, energetic voice of Dr. King.

“You Can’t Go Wrong Doing Right: How a Child of Poverty Rose to the White House and Helped Change the World”

D

o unto others.

Three words that are a shorthand reminder to be nice and treat people in the manner that you’d want to be treated. Do unto others and make life smoother. Be good, and be of service because, as Robert J. Brown reminds readers, “You Can’t Do Wrong Doing Right.”

Almost from his moment of birth, “Bobby” Brown was the recipient of kindness: his mother was an impulsive teen who’d already had one son she didn’t want, so Brown’s

grandmother took both boys in and raised them at a time when she and her husband should’ve been thinking about retirement.

“We were raised in faith…” says Brown, and it was by example: nobody in need was ever turned away at Miss Nellie’s house, even though the Browns had little themselves.

For Brown, that included medical care; he was a sickly child and because he couldn’t run or jump, he assumed a “role of peacemaker” instead.

“It’s funny,” he says,

“how our childhood ways offer preview into our adult lives.”

After graduation from high school, Brown attempted college but his grandparents’ health pulled him back home, where he ultimately joined the police force. There, he scaled the department through undercover work, and caught the eye of officials at the Federal Bureau of Narcotics; they offered him a job in New York City.

Brown’s wife loved it there, but for Brown, the Big Apple wasn’t home and besides, he’d

been thinking of changing careers.

He returned to High Point, North Carolina, and opened a PR firm, B&C Associates.

This was during the early years of the Civil Rights movement, and opening a busi-

ness was difficult for any Black man in the South. Brown had determined that his firm would stand on problem-solving and there was no bigger problem than Jim Crow, so he set his sights on working with corporations that needed his negotiating skills to avoid protests and boycotts.

Emboldened by small successes, he ultimately requested a meeting with the head of Woolworth’s – and he got the job!

J. Brown’s story. The rest involves names you’ll recognize and a lively historical pointof-view that’s truly unique.

Indeed, what you’ll read inside “You Can’t Go Wrong Doing Right” isn’t your usual Civil Rights eyewitness report. As a business owner and a Black man, Brown had a one-of-akind position within the movement: it was his fight, too, but “Woolworth’s was my main client…”

The tight balance he shares also keeps readers on their toes.

As for the rest of the story, you’ll surely appreciate the quiet grace and faith that Brown offers in its telling. His stories of Martin Luther King, Richard Nixon, and Nelson Mandela are incredible, both in scope and in personality.
