GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

Happy New Year 2021! 2021 as the year of “Hope” This is an important week for our Democracy. By the time this issue is distributed on January 7th– the Georgia vote will be in and Congress would have certified Joe Biden as our next President and Kamarla Harris as our next Vice President.

We will then begin the next chapter with our new administration coming into the White House on January 20th.

I plan to take the COVID 19 Vaccine as soon as it is offered to me since I do have 4 of the 5 risk factors. I have also taken my Flu shot and shingles shots. Last year was the first time I have taken a Flu shot. I am hopeful that the masses of doses of vaccines and more people becoming compliant with wearing masks will bring us some declining numbers in the very near future so that we can get to our new normal, which I believe washing hands often, not shaking hands, hugging or kissing and some continuing to wear masks will be in our future for a couple more years. I also believe Zoom is here to stay and a huge percentage of the population will now permanently work from home.

I want to say thank you to Nikoa Evens-Hendricks of Harlem Park to Park for her role in assisting several Harlem business with obtaining the LISC Grant, including the Harlem Community News.

I have applied for many grants during this Pandemic, Nikoa has distinguished herself in that she kept us informed every step of the way and got immediate answers for our questions. The community has heard that many central Harlem businesses have not gotten any assistance. As you will see on page 13 several of us have gotten assistance via Harlem Park to Park.

In addition, several other Harlem-based organizations were also helpful in acquiring grants for some other Harlem-based businesses through LISC. Many of your Harlem businesses are not thriving, but the are surviving though this Pandemic.

Remember to continue to shop with local businesses in the community. When you shop with businesses in your community it is more likely that money will continue to circulate within your community.

oy is a complex emotion, said to be an extremely glad feeling, happiness, or delight. However, it reveals itself to you, hold onto it with all your might. Joy may settle itself inside of you, lavishing bouts of tears or giddiness.

How strange to feel so good, you just do not know what to do. You may even cry tears of joy, let them flow.

Joy may tumble out in the form of roaring laughter at something simply said. Receive the joy and allow it to release the hinges of the door that may be

holding back one of life’s sweetest treasures.

One of the lines in a song in the stage production of West Side Story declares, “Something’s coming, I don’t know what it is, but it is gonna be great.” Joy is great. It is remarkable enough to cause a

It can be difficult to express joy and even harder to show it because of the undercurrents of jealousy and negativity that surround you. Some people do not want to and will not participate in your joy. They cannot figure out how you can claim joy during what you are going through; especially if you have shared your personal plight with them.

This is not a selfish move on her part, so she says, but rather a way to celebrate her freedom as a senior citizen able to enjoy the benefits of social security and a pension after years of hard work and raising four children.

She meets her financial obligations, including tithing in her church.

Why not enjoy sliding some green in the slot machine?

When I asked her what vices her friends have, she said, “They drink a lot and spend too much time gossiping and criticizing others.” To each his own is what constitutes the answer to what brings joy to you.

Joy often finds it way in the saddest of settings. A home attendant can make the day for a homebound senior with just a dash of joy upon arrival. A doctor can step into a room with a countenance of joy and contribute to a miraculous healing. A penniless pocket has some weight to it when a handful of joy with a smile passes by.

The joy of being alive, seeing and breathing is something to celebrate. A new year brings joy in hope, a new weave or a stylish wig brings joy when a sister looks in the mirror, a brother feels rejuvenated

with joy when he is told he looks good by the woman he longs to impress. Let joy fall wherever it may be and certainly do not let anyone steal it away.

It is not the world that takes away our joy, we give it away, when we allow others to determine what should bring us joy. Sometimes joy drops by on an unexpected visit. I recognize its presence as the aura of my God that fills the room to remind me that he is the center of my joy and that feels good.

COMMENTARY: Remembering the Silver Linings of 2020

here was little to celebrate or be happy about in 2020, particularly for Black America. So, as the calendar turns to 2021, and many wish friends, family and associates, “Happy New Year!” we’ll place an overwhelming emphasis on the “New Year” portion of the sentiment.

The year began with devastating news as the world learned that a helicopter carrying NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi, had crashed into a mountainside just outside of Los Angeles. Bryant, his young daughter, the pilot and six other passengers were all killed in the accident.

In unfortunate, but anticipated news, 2020 headlines continued to report on two areas of disproportionate death tolls for Blacks: Police killings of unarmed African Americans, and the novel coronavirus pandemic, or COVID-19, which disproportionately affected communities of color.

While some might argue that detecting a silver lining over the past 365 days is difficult, there was good news.

The outgoing year saw many firsts and accomplishments for African Americans, including many from the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), representing the Black Press of America.Presidential candidates Joe Biden, Tom Steyer, and Michael Bloomberg all sat for interviews with NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. Chavis, a civil rights icon, also helped raise the profile of the Black Press when he launched The Chavis Chronicles, a national television show with American Public Television. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation continued a campaign with the NNPA to raise awareness about education barriers for students of color and bridging the learning gap for minorities. That partnership has proven even more vital during the pandemic. The United States, and much of the world, underwent an awakened awareness that

Black Lives Matter now more than ever in 2020.

Following the murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and others, major sports leagues, corporations, and others began acknowledging their responsibility in the fight for social justice and civil rights. Led

by LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, NBA players exerted their popularity and authority by successfully demanding that the league honor the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Because of the players’ actions, the NBA opened its arenas to use as polling places, and the league agreed to promote social justice and civic engagement. Major League Baseball and the National Football League also instituted initiatives with promises to do more for minorities at all levels.

The Google News Initiative (GNI) Innovation Challenge awarded Black Voice News (BVN) $300,000 in support of “Save the Black Press,” a bold call to action to innovate revenue and sustainability solutions at Black news organizations through the creation of the Data Access and Content Discovery Hub (DACDH).

Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts announced that Comcast would fight injustice and inequality against race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ability. With that, Roberts committed $100 million to a three-year plan to advance social justice and equality. The initiative includes a $75 million cash commitment and $25 million in media. Facebook announced that 15 member publishers of the NNPA would receive $1.288 million in grants through the Facebook Journalism Project’s relief fund for local news. The social media giant said more than 200 news organizations would receive nearly $16 million in grants, which stem from $25 million in local news relief funding announced in March as part of Facebook’s $100 million global investment in the news.

the first Black person and Black woman president of the network. Jones, who quickly becomes the most prominent woman in cable news, is scheduled to step into the top role on Feb. 1, Black History Month, replacing Phil Griffin, who had been at the cable news channel for more than 25 years.

Mellody Hobson, a Princeton graduate who, in 2019, earned the Woodrow Wilson Award, the university’s highest honor, was named Chairwoman of the Board of Starbucks.

With the promotion, Hobson became the only African American woman to chair a Fortune 500 company.

Midshipman First Class Sydney Barber, a mechanical engineering major from Illinois, was named Brigade Commander for the spring semester at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Barber, a track star with a stated desire to work as a Marine Corps ground officer, becomes the first Black woman to lead the Naval Academy’s student body.

The Brigade Commander heads the Academy’s day-to-day activities and trains the class of approximately 4,500 midshipmen. Barber becomes the 16th woman to serve in that role.

There were significant changes in the world of entertainment as Valeisha Butterfield Jones, a leader, global influencer, and culture shifter, who co-founded the Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WENN) and served as the National Youth Vote Director for President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, was named the Recording Academy’s first Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer.

While the traditional annual festival which hosts more than 350,000 people on Los Angeles’ Crenshaw Boulevard wasn’t in the cards because of the pandemic, Bakewell Media and the Los Angeles Sentinel found a new way to bring even more people together. The 15th annual Taste of Soul, the largest one-day street festival in Southern California, took place virtually in October.

Corbett, an expert on the front lines of the global race for a SARSCoV-2 vaccine, will go down in history as one of the key players in developing the science that could end the pandemic.

Many others on the front lines of the fight to educate and advocate for African Americans are also celebrated. African American physicians at the University of Virginia, including Drs. Ebony Hilton, Leigh-Ann Webb, Taison Bell, Rochanda Mitchell and Cameron Webb all proved to be trusted and vital sources of objective information throughout the pandemic.

Critical care nurse Sandra Lindsay, an African American in New York, became the first person in the country to receive Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.

In November, the ticket of Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris earned 306 electoral college votes and recorded more than 81 million popular votes to defeat President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Harris will become the nation’s first African American and first woman vice president.

In December, L+M Development Partners formally announced financing for a $349 million development project on the Bronx Harlem River waterfront in New York, including the Universal Hip Hop Museum. Construction is scheduled to commence in January.

Boston Red Sox Hire Bianca Smith as First Black Woman Coach in Baseball History

He later said that he had heard more racist remarks in Boston than any other city.

“When I went to Boston, it was so consistent.

After a while, I just kind of shoved it off, and I went out and played. I played with aggression, though,” Hunter relayed.

He added that he felt uncomfortable with the idea of his family living in Boston if he had signed there.

“That’s why I got the no-trade clause, the list of teams, and I put Boston in there,” Hunter added.

“I love Boston. I wanted to play there. It just hit me that I can’t have my wife and my kids in this area,” he continued.

“There is no way I can do that because I don’t ever want them to go through that, and if they do, I don’t know what I would do, and I would be the angry Black guy, and that wouldn’t be good.”

Hunter’s comments prompted the Red Sox to issue a statement acknowledging his experience.

The team noted that, in 2019, there were seven reported incidents of fans using racial slurs at Fenway Park.

In 2017, Baltimore Orioles star outfielder Adam Jones said he was on the receiving end of racial slurs at Fenway Park no less than 100 times.

Fans even threw bags of peanuts at him, Jones said.

But the hiring of Smith is barrier-breaking. She joins a list of female professional baseball coaches, including Rachel Balkovec of the New York Yankees, Rachel Folden of the Chicago Cubs, and Christina Whitlock of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Last year, Alyssa Nakken of the San Francisco Giants became the first on-field female coach in Major League Baseball.

She once served as an intern for the Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds.

Smith also played softball at Dartmouth from 2010-12 before working as director of baseball operations at Case Western Reserve University from 2013 to 2017 and as an assistant coach with the University of Dallas in 2018.

Smith, who most recently served as an assistant baseball coach and hitting coordinator at Wisconsin’s Carroll University, was named a coach in the Boston Red Sox minor league system.

Smith, 29, becomes the first Black woman to coach in professional baseball.

She will work with the team’s infielders at the Red Sox minor league facility in Fort Meyers, Fla. “She was a great candidate coming in,” Red Sox vice president of player development Ben Crockett told the Boston Globe.

“She’s had some really interesting experiences and has been passionate about growing her skillset and development herself.”

That Smith’s historic hiring happened in Boston, a city where angry mobs violently attacked school buses carrying Black children to previously all-white schools in the 1970s, could be a sign of racial progress.

The Red Sox have had a history of racism at Fenway Park.

In 2019, four fans hung a banner that read “Racism is as American as Baseball,” from the famed Green Monster.

Last year, retired baseball star Torii Hunter told ESPN that he was called the N-word several times by fans as young as “little kids.”

Keeping the Lights On for Afterschool Programs (Statepoint)

fterschool programs help students succeed in school and in life and provide invaluable support to communities. As we’ve seen this year, these programs play an especially important role when students, families, and communities are struggling.

Programs across the country have stepped up in the pandemic, providing virtual educational activities, delivering meals and enrichment kits, helping families bridge the digital divide, connecting people to social services, and continuing in-person care for the children of essential workers and first responders.

Unfortunately, a large majority of afterschool pro-

grams that were open in the fall of 2020 report they are straining to meet the needs of the students and families they have long supported.

National surveys of parents and afterschool providers conducted by Edge Research for the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit awareness and advocacy group, find that programs and parents are challenged by virtual learning; program budgets are inadequate to address new safety protocols and students’ emerging needs; and students from low-income families are now less likely than others to have access to afterschool programs.

To underscore the value of afterschool programs and the need to invest in them, the Afterschool Alliance recently organized the 21st

annual “Lights On Afterschool,” the only national

rally for afterschool. It took place throughout the fall and

included local, state, and national events – many of them virtual this year – showcasing the skills students hone and talents they develop at their afterschool programs.

From virtual STEM fairs and art contests to car caravans and letter-writing to isolated nursing home residents, events focused on academics, civic engagement, STEM education, social and emotional wellbeing, bullying prevention, mental and physical health, and more.

“The strength and resilience afterschool programs demonstrated in 2020 was remarkable. Despite scarce resources, programs found ways to help students through what has been, for many families, the hardest of times,” says Jodi Grant, executive director of the After-

school Alliance. “However, there aren’t nearly enough afterschool programs to meet the need, especially now, with so many schools functioning virtually and with school schedules changing without warning. We need to invest much more in afterschool and summer learning programs.”

Educators Say They Must Act During the Pandemic to Close Widening Learning Gap

Oddi demanded that those in higher education need to examine their practices and ask themselves – “Who is here?

Who is missing?”

“We need to be able to work toward equitable education for all, leveling the playing field for those most at risk of being left behind, and close the gap that data shows are widening during the pandemic.

We need to work toward helping now, and helping always,” he said.

José Viana, former director of the U.S. Department of Education’s office of English-language acquisition and Senior Education Advisor at Lexia Learning, told NNPA Newswire that current circumstances caused by the pandemic have resulted in English language learners – many of whom are students of color – being at a significant disadvantage.

“For example, opportunities for oral language typically developed through speaking are infrequent due to the lack of in-person instruction,” Viana remarked.

“In addition, many school districts continue to modify educational plans due to ever-changing state

mandates, causing emergent bilingual students to be left out – either due to missing essential discourse opportunities with peers and teachers in the classroom or lacking the assistance and technology needed to learn effectively through remote instruction.”

He continued: “It is also important to consider that home and school relationships are a cornerstone of working with emergent bilingual students, and that school districts across the nation often lack interpreters that reach the family members of students while distance learning.”

Thanks to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s continued partnership, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) has carried on a

public awareness program to close the public school and the higher education achievement gap.

NNPA President and CEO, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., has conducted videotaped interviews with education experts, community activists, and college students to help determine whether students in underserved communities have their needs met during the pandemic.

During the interviews, Dr. Chavis discussed the various challenges students of color and the working-class face as the pandemic continues to grip America and place a stranglehold on education.

The NNPA also continued publishing a series of articles to draw attention to America’s education gap.

“I’m a tutor, and elementary school speech-language pathologist, and I work with students of color where I see various challenges for some of my students,” offered Jessica Bonner-Gomez, founder, owner, and tutor with For Other Prizes Consulting.

“The biggest challenge is the inability to get online at a set meeting time during the week,” Bonner-Gomez stated.

“For the children who attend their online speech therapy sessions inconsistently, the barrier is that the parent is a night-shift worker and sleeps during the day, has to rely on daycare staff to get the child online if the parent works throughout the day, or cannot remember to get the child online dure to already tending to other chil-

dren and responsibilities.”

Bonner-Gomez said children who perform noticeably better at school and around their peers are more likely to turn off when they are only learning virtually.

“As some of these children are already behind and may be aware of it, they tend to be the least attentive,” Bonner-Gomez noted.

“Consequently, this lack of attention puts them ever further behind their peers. This reality is exacerbated when some parents are too exhausted to provide one-to-one assistance to their child or find they cannot grasp the school content to be of help. Further, parents may not have the funds to hire a tutor even if they know their child is noticeably behind.”

“There also may be familial responsibilities like caring for a younger sibling or parent,” said Adrienne Oddi, the dean of admissions and financial aid at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

“Homes and residential dwellings are often more congested with family, making it difficult to focus. We see these demands in our own students at Trinity, too,” Oddi further asserted.

“It is a problem that isn’t simply at the K-12 levels but also in higher education. One of the main reasons we welcomed our students back to campus in the fall was to help combat inequity issues that may exist in a student’s home.

We were able to help provide our students with the resources and space they needed to focus on their education.”

Oddi acknowledged that the task is not easy for every student who wants an education.

Doctor Susan Moore, An African American Physician, Chronicles the Racist Medical Care that Led to Her Death

he disparities in health care treatment for African Americans extend not only to the millions of underserved patients in U.S. hospitals and medical facilities but also, sadly, to frontline healthcare professionals.

Just weeks after Dr. Susan Moore, an African American physician, posted a video that showed the world how her doctor, who is White, downplayed her complaints of pain and discomfort, she died of complications from COVID-19.

Many say that Moore’s plight illustrates the healthcare industry’s institutional biases and inherent systemic racism.

A pattern of operation, care and treatment that has only exacerbated the disproportionate susceptibility to the virus faced by African Americans.

Others are skeptical of both of the newly approved vaccines.

“Dr. Susan Moore knew all the fancy terms and treatment nuances when she was struggling with COVID-19 in the hospital. Yet, the doctor treating her was dismissive, and it felt to her like only one thing mattered to him: That she was Black. Dr. Moore died Sunday [December 20],” New York Times Journalist John Eligon wrote on Twitter.

Eligon wasn’t the only person to express outrage.

“Today, I want to 12

speak out on behalf of a fellow Black woman physician, Dr. Susan Moore, not to let our stories go unheard,” Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo of Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York stated.

“Sadly, while so many have fallen victim, her story is marred by systemic racism, even as a doctor.”

Indeed, in her last moments, Dr. Moore had complained about her treatment.

“He made me feel like a drug addict,” she said of the physician who downplayed her complaints of pain and suggested she be discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Moore was admitted to the Indiana University North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana.

In a December 4 Facebook video, Dr. Moore offered her complaints to the public.

She said that she only received medication after tests proved her initial complaints upon arriving at the hospital.

“I put forth, and I maintain, if I was White, I wouldn’t have to go through that,” Moore said in her video after explaining that her doctor only agreed to give her pain medication after a CT scan revealed new pulmonary infiltrates.

“And that man never came back and apologized.”

Dr. Moore continued: “I don’t trust this hos-

pital, and I’m asking to be transferred. These people wanted to send me home with new pulmonary infiltrates and all kinds of lymphadenopathy in my neck.

“This is how Black people get killed. When you send them home, and they don’t know how to fight for themselves. I have to talk to somebody, maybe the media, somebody, to let people know how I’m being treated up in this place.”

Dr. Moore updated her post later, noting that she had spoken to the hospital’s healthcare system’s chief medical officer, and her pain was finally being “properly managed.”

She said that the CMO “stated that there will be some diversity training” and that they were “working on” getting an apology from her doctor.

After her discharge, Dr. Moore shared an update.

“I was home for less

than 12 hours,” Dr. Moore wrote.

“Spiked a temperature of 103, and my blood pressure plummeted to 80/60 with a heart rate of 132. I’m back in the hospital, a different hospital Saint Vincent Carmel.”

She continued: “Those people were trying to kill me. Clearly, everyone has to agree they discharged me way too soon. They are now treating me for bacterial pneumonia as well

as COVID pneumonia. I am getting very compassionate care. They are offering me pain medicine.”

In her final update, Dr. Moore said she was being transferred to the ICU and was on a BiPAP machine to help her breathe.

“Dr. Susan Moore, a physician, residing in Indianapolis, experienced an untimely death,” the GoFundMe campaign states. “She had been fighting COVID for the

past few weeks. She leaves a son who is 19 years old and her parents, both of which have dementia. The son is dealing with both situations at this time and is in good spirits.”

“Susan was a phenomenal doctor,” the campaign added. “She loved practicing medicine, she loved being a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she loved helping people, and she was unapologetic about it.”

Dental Visits Are Essential Health Care, Here’s Why (Statepoint)

f maintaining good health is top of mind these days, as it is for many, be sure to factor dental hygiene into the equation. Medical experts say that a healthy mouth is critical to whole-body health, and warn that during the COVID-19 pandemic, certain stress-related oral health concerns are on the rise.

“Dental health and overall health are intrinsically linked. Beyond teeth and gums, the mouth serves as a window to the rest of the body, providing clues about health related issues that may be brewing,” says Dr. Alice Boghosian, American Dental Association (ADA) spokesperson.

CDC’s Chief COVID-19 Health Equity Officer Talks New Virus Variant, Safety with the Black Press

The interview with Dr. Hall primarily centered on the CDC’s tips for celebrating virtually with loved ones and offering guidance to those who choose to enjoy the holidays with friends and family outside of their homes.

After many ignored warnings and skirted guidelines for holiday travel and gathering during the Thanksgiving holiday, the coronavirus cases rose dramatically across the country. The CDC is hoping to avoid the same occurrence during Christmas and New Year’s.

“We understand that, naturally and socially, everyone wants to be around their loved ones,” Dr. Hall said.

“But the one thing we do advise if at all possible, to celebrate the holidays at home with people that you live with. “We are still in a very critical stage, and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and the ones you love.”

The CDC also implores everyone to wear masks and be socially distant to help create the safest conditions.

“If travel does happen, do so in a way that’s safe,” Dr. Hall maintained.

“Use mitigation strategies at your destination, including the

consistent use of masks, the consistent use of hygienic approaches like regularly washing your hands, and social distancing. Get testing if possible. We know that people will make their own choices, but we hope they will make choices to keep others safe.”

Dr. Hall, who holds degrees in epidemiology, general sociology, and psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, previously served as a Lead Behavioral Scientist in the Surveillance Branch of the Division of Violence Prevention of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

His professional interests include developmental epidemiology and social psychology applications within vio-

lence prevention, structural and environmental methods for reducing violence-related health disparities, and community-based models for violence surveillance, research, and prevention.

A medical sociologist by training, Dr. Hall’s work has focused on topics across the life span, including infant homicide, youth, young adult violence, and elder abuse.

As an African American, Dr. Hall said he understands the Black community’s hesitation about the new vaccines approved to fight the virus.

“To be able to heal and progress and really approach this opportunity from an informed position, we have to take into account all the things that might influ-

ence people,” Dr. Hall surmised.

“We can’t dismiss the importance of the Tuskegee Experiment, the Cincinnati Radiation Experiment, and we know the Henrietta Lacks story.”

Each of those medical experiments went awry.

In Lacks’ case, doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore gave Lacks’ cancerous cell samples to a researcher without her knowledge or consent.

Lacks’ cells turned out to have an extraordinary capacity to survive and reproduce.

Today, work done with what is now referred to as HeLa cells have been involved in critical discoveries in many fields, including cancer and infectious disease. One of their

most recent applications has been in research for COVID-19 vaccines.

Lacks’ family has never been compensated and are barely recognized for her immense contribution.

“These stories often pop up as African Americans,” Dr. Hall said. “When new social injustices arrive, it can call our faith into question. But, for us to potentially benefit from opportunities for health, we have to lay it all out on the table and talk it through and look at what’s represented in opportunities like flu vaccination, COVID opportunities, and preventive services.”

he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring a new strain of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom.

The agency is in constant communication with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Dr. Jeffrey E. Hall, the CDC’s COVID-19 Chief Health Equity Officer, said during a live interview with the National Newspaper Publishers Association.

Dr. Hall noted that the CDC and state and local health departments are continually monitoring and studying the virus spreading in the United States to detect any changes quickly.

“We just put up a website about the new variant, and it lays out the full story,” Dr. Hall remarked.

“One thing to note about the conversation about mutation, everyone tends to be frightened by that … those things tend to plant these concepts of what happens in nature that could lead to negative outcomes, but this is a situation when it comes to virality, that science, mutation is part of what is expected where that process is concerned.

Because of the profile of COVID-19, people are understandably concerned. But our agency

2021: A Year for Change and Letting Go

021 will be a year of change and letting go of old beliefs, lifestyles, and behavioral patterns; Last year was only a preview of things to come. The fear of the unknown makes change difficult for some. Change is a law of nature the lack of change will bring decay. Robert Collier writes about this in his

wonderful book. “The Secret of The Ages.”

According to Collier, “Life is dynamic, not static. It is ever moving forward, not standing still. The one unpardonable sin of nature is to stand still, to stagnate.”

Collier believed that all living things have what he calls a “life force:” special energy that allows for the adaption to the many changes of nature. Those who are able to use their life force and adapt will survive and those that fail to adapt in time will become extinct. This life force has allowed humans to overcome obstacles since the beginning of time. Collier also thought that hu-

mans could create their own destiny by using thought manifestation.

Collier believed that the gift of thought manifestation usually remains dormant until faced with an objective condition. All material tools that have allowed humans to overcome obstacles were first a thought in the minds of those who created them. The greatest creations came in response to the greatest need or an obstacle.

In 2021, our greatest obstacle will be letting go of the past and allowing for our creative minds to adjust to present and future objective conditions. The current health crisis will be the

first test. Those who chose to change their behavior patterns and lifestyle will do better than those who choose to think and live as they did in the past. Those who believe that a vaccine will allow them to return to their old ways are in for a major disappointment.

I would suggest letting go of negative thoughts of the past and look for positive solutions to current obstacles. We have the ability to adapt to change this ability can also help us grow and help others to grow if we believe that we can.

Do not allow fear and doubt to keep you in the past; This will be

the challenge of adapting to change.

Many are already adapting to change; Small businesses, in particular, are a fine example of this. Remember, the greater the obstacle the greater the ability to manifest a solution.

Our survival “life force” will never let us down if we learn how to use it properly. For those reading this article and did not know you had this hidden ability, now you know. Believe in yourself; let go of old ways and fears of change, welcome the new, and make this your best year ever. Happy New Year.

“Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America” by Ijeoma Uluo

his year, you are going to roar.

You're going to seize every opportunity, wrestle every bad habit to the ground, and do better than your best. You're gonna kick the universe in the tail.

This is absolutely going to be your year – unless, as in the new book "Mediocre" by Ijeoma Oluo, someone's standing in your way, now and for a hundred years.

In addition to a quiet setting and uninterrupted time to write, on a recent retreat for

women, Ijeoma Oluo noticed that when socializing, most of the attendees talked about men – but not the boyfriend-husband-partner men. They discussed bad "dudes," particularly the white ones that largely controlled publishing. That conversation morphed into bad men, white men in general, that are "found just about everywhere..."

There are, Oluo says, "a thousand memes" that feature the words, "Lord, give me the confidence of a mediocre white man," meaning that "white male mediocrity is a baseline"

White male privilege exists today in economics, pro sports, in language, in an ignorance of history and the contributions of Black men and women, and in entertainment. It's a "very dark place," Oluo says, and there are things every American can do about it – starting with two things: an acknowledgment that we need white men, and an

admission to our complicity in this terrible, untenable legacy.

Got a few days to read? Yeah, and grab a packet of those stickyflag things, too. "Mediocre" is a book that practically demands them: though this is not a seven-hundred-page manifesto, there's that much information inside its covers.

What's more, author Ijeoma Oluo asks readers to think about her words, and not lightly. This is a reada-few-paragraphs, putit-down kind of book, making you live with the facts before moving forward. Oluo uses stories to illustrate many

of her points, diving into American history, politics, and economics to help readers to see how quietly, totally entrenched white male privilege is and has been. Most eye-opening are her many statements of relevancy, showing how white males enjoy other cultures blithely, often while denigrating those very cultures.
