During this Pandemic Thanksgiving businesses such as Jacob's restaurants gave meals to the community the way they have done for more than a decade. Since Jacobs primarily focuses on take out, they have been able to pivot and maintain their business throughout the Pandemic thus far. (see pages 12-13) Dr. Marcella Maxwell has not let the Pandemic stop her from providing valuable information to Seniors. In conjunction with Abyssinian Baptist Church and with the assistance of the Links organization she is a member of, she conducted a Zoom presentation this past Monday with helpful information for seniors trying to pivot during the Pandemic. his past Saturday, New York politicians and community leaders came together to celebrate the life of the Honorable David N. Dinkins at NAN (National Action Network) in Harlem.

Honorable David N. Dinkins died last week at the age of 93, just 6 weeks after the death of his wife Joyce.

OP-ED: The Power of Trust and Truth Getting and sharing the facts about COVID-19, trusting science can help turn tide for pandemic-strapped communities of color

OVID-19 has killed more than 230,000 people in the U.S., and the death toll continues to rise at a rate of about 1,000 per day. We know, however, that families and communities don’t count their losses in thousands or hundreds; they count them one-by-one – a father, a teacher, a sister, a friend, a nurse, a son, a Tribal elder, a church member. And these losses hurt.

Some communities feel the impact of COVID-19 more than others. Latinos, along with African Americans and American Indians, account for more than half of all COVID-related cases, even though they represent just a third of the population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these groups require hospitalization at a rate about five times higher than whites, due to the severity of their illnesses or lack of early access to health care.

And the mortality outcomes reflect this as well: Latinos and American Indians die at 1.5 times the rate of whites, and African Americans, at 2.4 times the rate.

As scientists and NIH colleagues with more than 60 years of combined research experience in health disparities, we are not surprised by these discouraging statistics. But these awful numbers also feel deeply personal: they represent our friends, our family, our loved ones, too, as our roots are in these very communities— Philadelphia’s African American neighborhoods, Miami’s Cuban immigrant diaspora.

COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-

CoV-2, has simply shone a spotlight on health disparities that have long affected underrepresented communities like ours. We know, for example, that obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are more prevalent among people of color. If you have any of these conditions and contract COVID-19 you run a much higher risk for severe complications and death.

Biology and behavior are just part of the picture. Where we work, whether we have access to quality health care, what we eat, and other socio-economic conditions also drive health disparities.

As we grapple with the effects of these health inequities on our daily lives, we can take simple public health measures to help prevent the immediate spread of this disease, starting with wearing a mask, washing our hands, and maintaining six feet of distance from others. That won’t be enough to end the pandemic in communities of color.

As the leaders of two public health research agencies, we know we can’t just devise solutions from Washington, D.C. We must also work with those who are most trusted, respected, and closest to these hard-hit communities.

Through joint local efforts, we believe we can ensure that the best, most accurate information reaches these communities, and that they are informed about, and included in, diverse research studies essential for developing safe, effective treatments, and vaccines for all.

That is why the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a $12 million award to support teams in

11 states to establish the Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) Against COVID-19 Disparities.

This Alliance has already brought together community- and faith-based organizations, doctors, patients, researchers, community advocates and minority-serving educational institutions. For weeks, from Sacramento, California to Jackson, Mississippi, we have been listening carefully — to concerns, fears, very practical questions, and ideas. Our sincere hope is that, working together, we will find ways to overcome COVID-19 in a manner that takes into account the history, cultural differences, and unique input and needs of the people it affects most.

How do we do this? We start by offering reliable and easily understood information based on science, dispelling myths, and explaining the importance of research. CEAL is working with trusted members in communities like yours to ensure access to information that can be shared through virtual town halls, infographics, animated videos, and in many other ways – like social media posts.

Importantly, we also will be encouraging participation in research studies designed to stamp out COVID-19 in high-risk communities. That’s because clinical trials, the fundamental part of the scientific process, show whether new medicines and vaccines are effective at protecting you against disease. When a drug gets approved and your doctor prescribes it for you, you are not wrong to wonder whether it has been tested and shown to work — and especially shown to work for people like you.

This is why it is so important for research studies to include

people from all races, genders, ages, socio-economic classes and more. We simply need to learn who is likely to benefit the most from any given treatment. In other words, we can’t develop effective drugs and vaccines to conquer COVID-19 in communities of color without the active participation of the people who live there.

We strongly believe that when done right, inclusive research leads to solutions that get us where we need to be. We already have safeguards in place to ensure historic wrongs are not repeated, and that safe and ethical standards are practiced consistently. The Food and Drug Administration, review boards, and expert panels at the NIH—indeed, each institution and company conducting medical research—rigorously review every phase of a clinical trial, from before it begins until after it ends.

These review boards include not just scientists, doctors, and experts, but also community advocates who keep a watchful eye on the process.

While these factors are critical to ending this public health emergency, we must keep our eyes on an even bigger prize—a nation without the disturbing health inequities that compromise the health of our whole society. As clinicians who have cared for countless patients of color, as mentors who have supported underrepresented groups, and as members of communities where each one teaches one, we fully understand the power of community to make a difference in the long fight against this conquerable problem.

We firmly believe that by traveling this journey together—by sharing sound information, by squashing misinformation, by being responsible citizens and building trust in science—we can push this deadly pandemic into retreat.

Hopefully when that happens, we can embark on a path of inclusion that gives everyone in America a fighting chance for a long and healthy life.

Jacob’s Continues Giving Back During the Pandemic

acob’s restaurant has been giving something back to the Harlem community since they opened

in 2009.

Rashid Niang, and Kim Lum Chan-Niang are co-owners of Jacob’s restaurant located at 375 Malcolm X BouleAction Pest Control vard. Jacob’s restaurant has been giving Thanksgiving dinners to the Harlem Community residents for the past 11 years.

Each Thanksgiving, long lines are formed in front of the restaurant for a free, full-course dinner. “We usually feed around 500 people,” Kim says, “but this year has been different.” Kim remarked that “many of her customers have been out of work, so Jacob’s has been

feeding many families since the start of COVID-19.”

Jacob’s restaurant has always supported community organizations and has become even more popular over the past few months. The restaurant has provided food to the doctors and staff at Harlem Hospital and has helped many of the local churches.

The restaurant received a lot of sup-

port from the Harlem Community. I asked Cynthia Johnson, who waited in the long line to receive food from Jacob’s with her two kids what she thought of the restaurant.

Cynthia said, “you always get your money’s worth at Jacob’s, and the food selection is one of the best in town.” She went on to say that during this difficult time, the free Thanksgiving dinners allow her to save a lot

of money.

The success of Jacob’s restaurant, which was named after Rashid’s father, provided the opportunity to open a second restaurant at 2695 Frederick Douglas Blvd. which David Taylor manages.

There are also long lines at the second restaurant. David said that “this year was difficult for the community, so he tried to be as supportive

EVENTS as possible by helping families in need by creating a community organization that donates food. In the past, many communities, businesses, and civic leaders have volunteered to serve food at both locations during Thanksgiving.

When Rashid and Kim decided to open their second restaurant, they asked David to manage it.

Many volunteers come from local churches such as First Baptist Church and Blessed Trinity Baptist Church.

It seemed that the lines were getting longer and longer but, Mrs. Niang assured me that they would have plenty of food this year.

t has been proven that diseases cannot survive in an alkaline state, but viruses, bacteria, yeast, fungus, candida and even cancer cells can only live and grow in a low oxygen/ low pH environment. If your body is acidic, it will not be able to retain enough oxygen to fight infections.

If your pH level is 7.0 or better, it will become alkaline; this allows the blood

I

t’s almost time for lights out.

Just before that, though, you have a ritual: you wash your face, brush your teeth, put on your jammies, crawl into bed, and get a bedtime story.

Then it’s lights out until morning but before your good-night kiss tonight, ask for one last thing.

Ask for “Dark Was the Night” by Gary Golio, illustrated by E. B. Lewis.

In a tiny Texas town in 1897, little Willie Johnson was born on a bright, sunny January day.

Willie’s family didn’t have much money, and so when he was a small boy

and his parents noticed how Willie loved to sing, his father made a guitar for him from a cigar box and a wooden board. The boy would strum and sing all day long, and that’s how Willie Johnson learned to play the guitar.

But then “some light went out of [his] life...”

His Mama died, and not long after that, when Willie was “seven or eight,” he went blind.

So Willie couldn’t see, but that didn’t stop his voice, did it? No, he could still sing in church and at home, and “on street corners.” He could still strum his guitar – a real one now, one that could sound like it was “laughing or crying”

– and he played his audiences “the way a preacher would.”

And that’s what he did: he traveled by train, into towns where cotton farmers gathered on Saturday mornings, and he’d sing raspy and powerful, making his guitar laugh and cry and people would put a few coins in a cup so that Willie Johnson had something for supper and a place to lay his head for another night. He played and played until one day, a man came to hear Willie sing, and the man offered to make a new thing called phonograph records and pretty soon, everybody knew the name of Willie Johnson. He was “a shin-

That was true almost a hundred years ago. And it’s still true today...

For the older child who hears this story at bedtime – and “Dark Was the Night” makes an excellent bedtime tale, by the way – there may be some question. How can a century-old story still be relevant?

The answer lies in author Gary Golio’s afternotes. There, he explains that when NASA sent Voyager I into space some forty years ago, included was a time capsule of audio clips, and Johnson’s song with the same title as this book.

Nice to know, but your child is likely to care much more about Johnson’s life story, which is inspirational and shows the strength of will and talent, despite adversity. There’s also magic in this book, which comes in E.B. Lewis’ washed-watercolor illustrations: alone, they tell a wordless tale that appears as sad, elated, or determined, all of which are perfect for children who are pagers more than readers.

Older preschoolers may enjoy this book, but starwatchers up to age 8 will love it best. Find it – then sneak “Dark Was the Night” in before lights out.
