The COVID 19 Vaccine is now being distributed around the world and a Black Nurse at a hospital in Queens, NY was the first to receive the vaccine in New York. Dr Fauci also announced that the Modena Vaccine was actually developed in hisinstitute’s vaccine research center by a team of scientists led by Dr. Barney Graham and his close colleague, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, or Kizzy Corbett (an African-American woman). Since I have 4 of the 5 risk factors for COVID, I will be looking forward to taking the vaccine as soon as it is available – after I have observed the thousands who would have gone before me for about a month. We will also look forward to the numbers declining and no longer having the threat of a shut down of non essential businesses in early 2021.

2021 is looking like the year of “Hope.” We now have a confirmed new administration coming into leadership of our nation as Joseph Biden was certified by the electoral college today as the winner and next president of the United States, along with the new Vice President Elect Kamarla Harris. We can now look forward to restoration of honesty, sanity and the democratic process at work.

“Stay Home for the Holidays” – those are the words being echoed from the President-Elect, the Governor, the mayor and the CDC. Resist traveling to be with your loved ones and yes be fearful you may take COVID to them or they may transfer COVID to you. AARP NY Urges Families to Ensure Nursing Homes Are Complying

A

“Over 6,500 New Yorkers have died in nursing homes during the pandemic so far – plus an undisclosed number of nursing home residents who died after being sent to hospitals. Many of them were alone,” said AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel. “We need to prevent a repeat of this epic tragedy, and one of the keys is ensuring residents’ families can see what’s going on inside their loved ones’ nursing homes.

This new law helps them do so, but New Yorkers must be vigilant and proactively monitor their loved ones’ homes.”

“Too many nursing home residents and families have been devastated over the last nine months because their facility failed to develop and implement basic safety protocols,” said Richard J. Mollot, Executive Director of The Long Term Care Community Coalition. “This law provides strong requirements which, if enforced, will help protect residents in the face of a second wave of the pandemic.”

s COVID-19 infection rates rise during this holiday season, AARP is alerting nursing home residents and their families of a new state law requiring nursing homes to have pandemic plans in place to protect residents – and to make those plans public.

The law, signed

by Governor Andrew Cuomo in June, requires each nursing home to post its emergency plan on its website, or immediately upon a family’s request.

The law includes these seven key facets, which require nursing homes to: · Update family members and guardians of infected residents at least once a day - and whenever the resident’s condition changes; · Update all residents and family members and guardians at least once a week on the number of infections and deaths at the facility, by whatever means the family chooses electronic or other; · Provide all residents free daily access to remote

OVID-19 is a longsuffering pandemic on the minds of most because it is still on the map and causing havoc in all quarters of the world.

However, there are other reasons to be stressed out in these trying times.

Those other factors are not in a category of life and death like a coronavirus, but the frustration and anxiety they cause can be mind boggling.

Whenever I am asked how I am occupying my mind and stabilizing my sanity during this voluntary in-house shut-in -- of which I am a willing participant - I respond that writing is my therapy. I genuinely enjoy making

my way to my laptop every day to jot down my thoughts and encourage others to stay woke. But it is not always easy!

The internet connection for my laptop is controlled by Wi-Fi. I use the word “controlled” blatantly annoyed because it chooses to disconnect when I need it the most. A warning box

will appear on the screen stating my connection is unstable. Funny, the alert uses the word “unstable” for the computer as I contemplate my timeline.

The question that is most frequently asked when I place my help me call to those in the know is the same. Did you reboot? Those are the new words in the new question for the upcoming new year 2021. Ask yourself now, did you reboot?

I have been trying to salvage what is left of my pre-COVID life in deep contemplation and meditation as I proclaim a new normal. New means change and that is quite an endeavor for

most of us who are set in our ways, whether they were working out or not.

Change is not easy; we will have to start afresh to move onward in a society that may be unrecognizable at best.

We are existing in a world of artificial intelligence in which the language is different, and the actions are foreign because of ever changing upgrading from day to day. In computing, rebooting is the process by which a running computer system is restarted, either intentionally or unintentionally.

We must be in a precautionary mode of

preparation now for a future of unlimited upheaval to build back better.

Get ready to reboot to establish a new beginning

which will reactivate your operating systems.

You can reboot and restart again into good health, happiness and a conscientious effort toward prosperity that will support you in soaring as never before.

ueens Borough President Donovan Richards stated the following in response to Monday’s arrival of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine in New York City, which was administered first to Northwell Health Long Island Jewish

“More than 95,000 Queens residents have contracted COVID-19 over the past nine months, including more than 6,000 of our friends, neighbors and loved ones whom

Stopping the Exploitation of Prisoners and Their Families Requires More Comprehensive Solutions

2020 brought renewed global focus to issues of social justice in America. From the racial disparities and inequities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic to the killings of George Floyd and so many other Black and Brown Americans at the hands of police officers have all contributed to the evolving social justice “reckoning” across the nation.

As part of this long overdue redress about institutional and systemic racism, renewed attention should also be focused on the many injustices within the U.S. correctional system. Black and Brown Americans are disproportionately imprisoned in the United States.

Much of the public outrage has been directed at officials who have been unable to prevent the fatal spread of COVID-19 in jails and prisons throughout the country.

In addition, there were too many governors who were unwilling to reduce prison populations by releasing individuals who posed no threat to public safety. As a result, nearly 200,000 incarcerated Americans have been infected as of November 2020 according to the Marshall Project.

And the criticism of the correctional system does not stop with the prison officials themselves but extends to the full spectrum of private companies that provide services to correctional agencies. Among those that find themselves in the crosshairs of the growing critical scrutiny are a group of specialized telecommunications companies.

These companies provide two connected services to the corrections industry: communications tools that people in jails and prisons use to connect with family and people on the outside (telephones, but also modern devices like digital tablets); and security and investigatory tools built into the communications tech, which help correctional agencies monitor for criminal activity.

On the surface, these may appear to be both good things. The problem, however, comes in how these products are paid for.

See, it’s not the correctional agencies that pay for these services – companies charge for every call made, but it’s the families and friends of the imprisoned making the calls or accepting the calls that end up paying those bills.

It obviously costs money to build, install, maintain, and secure this technology.

But, not all or even most of this money that is paid for those services goes to the telecoms themselves.

What most people do not know is that the government takes a cut of the revenue – in many cases, the lion’s share. For example, in 2018 incarcerated individuals in Connecticut paid $13.2 million for phone calls.

Nearly 60% of that money went to the state.

Because of this model, the cost of making a call or sending an email from a correctional facility can be much higher than on the outside. And these costs can vary widely from state to state. In 2019, according to the Prison Policy Initiative, the average cost of a call from a jail in New Jersey cost $1.26, while that same call in Arkansas cost $14.49.

Prison telecom companies have faced strong criticism in recent years from elected and community leaders for their role in these charges. I have expressed concern about the way these contracts put an unreasonable financial burden on families in our communities. In my civil rights career, I have experienced firsthand how prisoners and their families are taken advantage of and financially challenged by jail and prison regulated services.

And at least one of these companies, Securus Technologies, appears to have taken this criticism to heart. In 2017, Securus was acquired by Platinum Equity, which is headed by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores. At the time, many of us would have reasonably assumed that a private equity firm would simply extract as much value from the company as possible and then sell it at a profit.

But that’s not what Gores did. Instead, he appears to have undertaken an effort to change some of the problematic business practices that have long plagued the correc-

tional telecom industry. At the beginning of this year Gores brought in a new CEO for Securus, who committed to lowering their prices and improving the services they provide to incarcerated Americans.

If you approach such a promise with a healthy dose of skepticism, you’re not alone – especially knowing the history of this industry. But for the moment, Securus seems to be making good on its promises.

According to company updates, Securus has so far reduced the average cost of calls by 30%. It has renegotiated lower rates with 56 correctional agencies this year.

It has been offering free calls and other communications to incarcerated individuals impacted by the pandemic – over 30 million to date.

Was that enough? No. Far from it.

But it was an important start, and one that no other company in the prison telecom space has so far matched. Yet Gores appears to have been singled out for criticism by a group of advocates for the incarcerated.

Sometimes even those with good intentions can find themselves caught up in the systemic problems of the correctional industry.

Those attacks came to a head this year when critics demanded that the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA) remove Gores from its board. They called him a “prison profiteer,” despite the fact that – as the LA Times notes – Gores had pledged 100% of his personal stake in Securus to helping reform its operations.

LACMA eventually bowed to pressure and, to avoid further friction, Gores resigned his seat. This is exactly an example the consequences of poor judgement in public advocacy that does not actually help bring relief to the families of the mass incarcerated. Did LACMA improve the life of a single incarcerated individual by doing so?

It did not.

To be clear, the prison telecom industry remains in need of serious reform. We need to hold Securus and other telecoms accountable for changing their harmful business practices. But if we want people to do the right thing then we need to acknowledge when they actually strive to do the right thing.

So where do we go from here? The

solution is not, as some have suggested, to eliminate these companies altogether. The services they provide are needed, and few believe they could be offered at the same quality or efficiency by the public sector.

And the security tools offered are necessary as well – among other things, they help prevent attempts to cause harm from within prison walls, from harassing victims to operating criminal activities on the outside.

But individuals who have been sentenced to prison for a crime are already paying their debt to society. They should not also be forced to pay to help plug holes in the budget of a local warden or sheriff.

State and county officials need to stop collecting “commissions” on these services, and where possible they should contribute public funds to reduce the costs of these communications tools for incarcerated Americans.

Securus also needs to go further.

Although they have lowered costs, their products remain far too costly for some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

And their competitors need to follow suit – including the biggest operator in this space, Global Tel Link.

While our democracy remains politically, socially, and economically divided, we all have just witnessed the transformative power of the vote by millions of people who care about the future of our nation.

Ultimately, correctional telecom companies depend on contracts from state and local correct agencies. The heads of those agencies are appointed by elected officials.

Criminal justice reform was on the national ballot.

Voters must now hold all elected officials accountable on a wide array of issues including the issue of improving the telecom services offered to prisoners and their families. Stop the exploitation of prisoners and their families. Prison wardens, county sheriffs, and state officials resolutely should stop taking advantage of incarcerated people.

Inaugural Disney Dreamers Academy Virtual Program Series Culminates with Festive Commencement Celebration

A

stirring production, tributes from beloved celebrities and powerful musical performances marked the December 12 commencement ceremony for the first Disney Dreamers Academy Virtual Program Series. 100 teens from across the country were feted and celebrated for completing the 12-week, one-of-a-kind-program of live and on-demand video sessions designed to help them jump-start their life goals and pursue their dreams.

Inspired by the Disney Dreamers Academy program that has taken place at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida annually since 2008, the virtual program was available free to the 2020 class to continue educating and inspiring students during the pandemic.

The inaugural virtual event kicked off September 26, 2020, launching the series of 12 weekends filled with engaging presentations by Disney leaders, other business professionals and celebrities.

For commencement, Disney Dreamers and their parents/guardians were treated to a stirring production, complete with special performances by and tributes from beloved celebrities such as Anthony An-

derson from ABC’s black-ish, actress Yvette Nicole Brown and Arica Himmel of ABC’s mixed-ish. Anderson, Brown and Himmel also joined Disney Signature Experiences Vice President and Disney Dreamers Academy Executive Champion Tracey D. Powell, as event co-hosts.

To add to the excitement, Disney Dreamers were awarded career shadowing externships. A first for Dis-

ney Dreamers, each student will be paired with a professional from his or her field of interest for a spring 2021 mentoring experience. Mentors will bring knowledge and expertise from Walt Disney Imagineering, The Walt Disney Studios, ABC, Pixar, Essence Magazine, National Geographic and other organizations.

“We took great pride in presenting the Disney Dreamers Academy Virtual Program Series,” said Disney Dreamers Academy Executive Champion Tracey D. Powell. “The virtual platform gave us a chance to amplify the Disney Dreamers Academy theme, ‘Be100,’ which encourages teens to be positive, to be ‘all in’ and to make a difference.”

Even after the celebration,

the virtual motivation continued. Students got an extra dose of inspiration and career advice from Disney Dreamers Academy alumni via video conference, while parents connected with Disney Dreamers Academy speakers and program advocates for a motivational session of their own.

“We could not be more impressed with this year’s class and the curiosity, positive outlook and perseverance it’s shown the last 12 weeks,” said Powell. “This was a unique opportunity for us to touch the lives of these 100 students, and we know they are destined for great things.”

Disney Dreamers Academy traditionally brings together 100 students from across the United States for an

all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney World where they participate in an immersive, transformational four-day learning experience. The program is part of Walt Disney World Resort’s commitment to helping the next generation of young people by inspiring them at a critical time in their development. The virtual series was launched after the March 1215, 2020, event at Walt Disney World Resort ended early due to the pandemic.

Proof and Transparency: Dr. Ebony Hilton Will Take Coronavirus Vaccine, Provide Live Updates

For those who remain skeptical about vaccination, one high-profile medical doctor will give a day-by-day update of her experience.

Dr. Ebony J. Hilton, the medical director at GoodStock Consulting, LLC, and associate professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Virginia, plans to take the vaccine publicly and regularly update her health on YouTube.

“Learn from me, ask questions,” said Dr. Hilton, who is also a member of the National Newspaper Publishers Association Coronavirus Task Force. Dr. Hilton promises she’ll be transparent and answer any questions.

“We are finally, as a nation, nearing the light at the end of the tunnel,” declared Dr. Hilton who, in just four short years, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the College of Charleston in South Carolina with three degrees, two Bachelor of Science degrees in Bio-

chemistry and Molecular Biology, and a Bachelor of Arts in Inorganic Chemistry.

“I’m excited about this. Many say the light is very dim. They don’t know what to trust,” Dr. Hilton further stated.

“There’s been so much misinformation from top to bottom. The pandemic is real. Over 280,000 Americans alone have lost their lives to COVID-19,” she remarked.

Dr. Hilton said the vaccine is perhaps the only hope of America returning to some normalcy. She also recognizes the reluctance of African Americans and immigrants to volunteer for

vaccination.

“I know there’s a lot of doubt,” Dr. Hilton sympathized. “There are big classes of people who say, ‘Can I really trust this?’ We have the African American community saying, ‘Hey, wait; the government has done things to us.’

“The Tuskegee Experiment ended ten years before I was born, and we still have heavy metal laced water in Flint, Michigan, we still have not fixed,” Dr. Hilton continued.

She added that immigrants might not seek the vaccine out of fear of deportation. Others, Dr. Hilton said, mistakenly believe the coronavirus

is just like the flu, and people get over it.

“As a health care provider, we owe it to people to say, ‘How to do this right?” Dr. Hilton asserted. “We need truth and transparency, and it will start with me.”

Dr. Hilton concluded: “If I take this vaccine and I show you what happens day-to-day to me and my body. If I’m having headaches and fevers, I want you to see in real-time what happens to my body as I have this injected into my body.”

Dr. Hilton is part of the Phase one vaccination because she’s a health care worker.

The second phase will consist of essential workers like teachers, grocery store employees, and others who worked in high-risk areas during the pandemic.

“So, I’m in phase one, and if you are in phase two or three, you can learn from me what it does to my body,” Dr. Hilton advised.

“I’m hoping, with that transparency, you’ll be able to make a better decision on what to do. So, join me, and I’ll be as open and honest as possible. We have one time to do this right, and I’m hoping it’s this time.”

Distance Learning, COVID-19 Pose Challenges to Educators, Administrators and Parents

n Southeast Los Angeles’s most under-resourced and predominately diverse neighborhoods of Compton, Lynwood, and Bellflower, David Anderson has served as an educator in the expanding learning and youth development space for more than 15 years.

The General Manager of Think Together’s Southeast Los Angeles region, Anderson leads a team of role models helping students through enrichment curriculum in the area.

Anderson has passionately advocated for the education equity needed in the public school system, noting that it’s a requirement to have successful college and post-education careers.

This year, Anderson and his team have served more than 17,000 students in both a distance learning and in-person support capacity, with students of color comprising nearly 84 percent.

Anderson told Black Press USA that students, parents, teachers, and administrators of color all face various levels of challenges during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The biggest challenge with many of the students of color we serve is engagement. Students are faced with inefficient resources, little excitement to learn, and are born without being surrounded by role models and motivations which lead a child to dream, work hard and be successful,” Ander-

son noted.

He said the students his team serves are primarily students of color, born without choices and not enlightened to dream.

“Parents of the students of color are often challenged to provide for their children without the resources and support they need for themselves,” Anderson relayed.

“These parents have a lack of resources, a lack of time for mental and physical health, and limited time

for communication and social-emotional support of their children. That yields an unhealthy and fatigued environment that takes the energy and will to continue to work hard and make it with only hope alone. It is next to impossible for a parent to progress and be their child’s support and motivation while exhausted and without the belief that continuing to work even harder can improve the lives of themselves and their family.”

Schools provide students with a haven for learning.

At the same time, teachers and administrators work together to find innovative ways in-person and virtually to make learning fun and help students support their academic trajectory and provide enrichment opportunities that students of color are not exposed to and cannot afford, Anderson offered further.

“Without school, these students are not often exposed to financial literacy nor the growing unlimited STEM and tech careers that a child may choose to pursue if their parents or family worked in these industries,” he added.

Anderson continued: “It is at school where students of color learn civic

engagement, leadership, entrepreneurship, and how to create generational change.

Through adversity, teachers and administrators of color especially have the mantle of leadership to build a system of support for current students to rise, have successful careers and lives, and those students as adults may lay a framework for the next generation of students to be born into a life with choices.

“The next generation of students are to be born exposed to role models at home, enlightened to subjects and careers they may become passionate about, have goals, the will, and belief in themselves to work hard and make their dreams a reality.”

Dementia Related Psychosis: Four Caregiver Facts You Need to Know (Statepoint)

A

pproximately 2.4 million people or 30 percent of people living with dementia in the U.S. may experience hallucinations and delusions associated with dementia-related psychosis. These symptoms might include seeing something that isn’t there or believing something that isn’t true and can be frequent, persistent and recur over time.

According to advocates, improving management of these troubling symptoms starts with recognizing and understanding what patients are experiencing. To learn more, UsAgainstAlzheimer’s, the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) and Acadia Pharmaceuticals, surveyed patients and their caregivers.

Findings highlighted important, infrequently discussed, considerations for caregivers: 1. Symptoms can happen frequently: The most com-

mon symptoms of dementia-related psychosis reported by surveyed patients were visual hallucinations (89 percent), auditory hallucinations (54 percent) and distortion of senses (54 percent) and such symptoms can happen frequently. Of patients who reported recent visual hallucinations, 61 percent indicated they occurred at least weekly.

In addition, the majority of care partners (77 percent) reported paranoid delusions as occurring at least weekly.

“Given their potential frequency, being prepared to recognize, report, and manage these symptoms is critical,” says Theresa Frangiosa of UsAgainstAlzheimer’s, one of the survey authors.

“My mom experienced these kinds of symptoms associated with her Alzheimer’s disease and in talking with other caregivers, many people think this could never happen to their family until it does.”

2. Dementia-related hallucinations and delusions

greatly impact a patient’s overall health and quality of life: Most surveyed patients said their activities of daily living (75 percent), sleep (63 percent), family life (56 percent), and safety (about 56 percent) were affected by dementia-related hallucinations and delusions. Care partners reported that symptoms make it difficult for their loved ones to know what is real and what is not real, contributing to their anxiety, and impacting their personal relationships.

Jo Anne, 70, from Maryland, was surprised by her husband’s hallucinations.

“Before Ed was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, he would tell me that he saw mice or insects in the house so, of course, I’d go check!

When these experiences increased in frequency, I knew that we needed to talk to his doctor about why he was having persistent hallucinations.”

hen it comes to how to treat, prevent, and recover from the Coronavirus, commonly referred to as COVID-19, the jury is still out. Yet, the one thing that all medical professionals can agree on is your immune system and your overall health can directly impact how your body responds to the virus.

Traditional Chinese Medicine also referred to as TCM, has thousands of years of experience dealing with infectious diseases that have swept through the region. Throughout the years, there have been a handful of studies that show the health benefits of Chinese herbs and acupuncture when it comes to combating infec-

tious diseases such as SARS. Furthermore, research shows when combined with Western medicine the medical benefits can be extremely beneficial.

However, the approach to medicine in the West is much different than that in the East.

Westernized medicine focuses on how to “cure” a virus through medication and vaccines, while Eastern medicine focuses on the patient and seeks to improve the individual’s overall wellbeing. The West focusing on a medicine driven approach while the East focuses on one’s immune system.

So, how do we move forward? It starts with awareness. We’ve seen through clinical studies that patients

treated during the last pandemic (SARS) showed a significant reduction in the duration of symptoms when treated with both TCM and Western medicine. However, the lack of awareness is what hinders us from bridging the gap between the two practices. Americans traditionally rely on medication to manage and treat their chronic disease and pain rather than focusing on lifestyle habits that may put them more at risk. As a result, the American society has become comfortable with addressing symptoms rather than the root cause of an illness or ailment.

Incorporating TCM ideologies into Westernized medicine is easier than many

may think. Much of Eastern medicine is focused on mind and body together – outlining how one can help improve someone’s overall wellbeing outside of prescription medicine. Some TCM suggested practices can be incorporated easily into one’s daily life. For example, addressing one’s state of mind is key to overall health and wellness.

Many studies show the negative impact of fear and worry on the immune system. Those with a history of depression or anxiety are much more likely to get sick. For this reason, TCM focuses on a three-pillar system: mental, physical, and spiritual. It’s believed all of these contribute to one’s overall health.

Unfortunately, caregivers of people with dementia compared to non-caregivers can experience high rates of emotional and physical stress as well as depression, an increased likelihood of comorbid conditions, hospitalizations, and doctor visits.

In fact, caregiver burden is associated with increased desire to place people with dementia in long-term care.

4. Getting help as early as

possible is key: Living with dementia-related hallucinations and delusions takes a toll on both patients and caregivers. That’s why advocates urge caregivers to get educated about what to expect from dementia-related psychosis and find support.

“If you see your loved one exhibiting new symptoms, then take the initiative to tell their health care provider, who can offer advice on how to cope,” urges Frangiosa.

Within the eastern practice, yoga, meditation, and Tai Chi are simple changes doctors suggest their patients make to help them achieve a more balanced self and stronger immunity.

The same focus is on diet, hydration, and sleep. For example, within Eastern medicine, sugar is one of the main causes of inflammation, sluggishness, and immune system vulnerability. The knowledge and understanding of these immune compromising issues are the focus of the Eastern medicine approach, yet often overlooked within the Western practice. That is why it’s vital that Westernized medical professionals refer their patients to TCM focused practitioners. Seeing the

body allows Eastern medical professionals to see the whole picture – treating the cause, not just the symptom.

As we continue to journey on the “fight against COVID-19” we as medical professionals must come together to help heal society.

By referring each other and supporting different ideologies, we can create an overall healing system that will help society see it is equally as important to treat the symptom as it is the root cause.

The Placebo Effect

By: W.A.Rogers Placebo is anything that seems to be "real" -- but isn't. In terms of medicine, it could be a pill, a shot, or some other type of "fake" treatment. What all placebos have in common is that they do not contain an active substance meant to affect health.

Researchers use placebos during studies to help them understand what ef-

fect a new drug or some other treatment might have on a particular condition. For instance, some people in a study might be given a new drug, while others would get a placebo. None of the people in the study know whether they got the real treatment or the placebo.

Researchers then compare the effects of the drug and the placebo on the people in the study.

That way, they can determine the effectiveness of the new drug and determine the side effects. In many cases, 40% of the volunteers who received the placebo experience the same positive effects as those given the actual drug.

A response to a pla-

cebo can be a negative or positive one. A person’s symptoms may improve, but in some cases, the person can have a negative reaction if they believe the placebo to be harmful.

These responses are called the “Placebo Effect”.

Research on the placebo effect has focused on the relationship of the mind and body. One of the most common theories is that the placebo effect is due to a person's expectations. If a person expects a pill to do something, then it is possible that the body's own chemistry can cause effects similar to what a medication might have.

Your mind is a powerful healing tool when given the chance. The

idea that your brain can convince your body that a fake treatment is the real thing — the so-called placebo effect — and thus stimulate healing has been around for millennia.

Now, science has found that under the right circumstances, a placebo can be just as effective as traditional treatments.

The word “placebo” comes from a Latin root meaning, “I shall please,” and “please” it does. In study after study, many people who take a placebo show improvement in their symptoms or condition.

The power of suggestion is a double-edged sword. If you expect a treatment to help you, it may be more likely to do

so. And if you expect a treatment to be harmful, you are more likely to experience negative effects. That phenomenon is called the “nocebo effect” (from the Latin “I shall harm”).

If you tell a person that a headache is a common side effect of a particular medication, that person is more likely to report headaches even if they are taking a placebo. The power of expectation is formidable and probably plays a significant role in the benefits and the side effects of commonly prescribed medications.

The placebo effect proves that the power to self-heal is real if you genuinely believe it.

We will have a vaccine for COVID-19 in a few months whereas some will take it and many

will not. It is important to understand that even in the studies that were conducted for each of the vaccines that will soon be available, many of the volunteers who received the placebo during the study were able to get the same results as those who received the real drug because they believed that they were getting the vaccine.

Many researchers believe that healthy eating, lifestyle changes, meditating and positive thinking can be like giving yourself a placebo if you truly believe your actions can keep you healthy. The fact is we can think ourselves sick and we can think ourselves healthy; now is the time to be careful about your beliefs and thoughts; even if you decide to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

No, real mail, delivered by a carrier in a mailbox outside your door. It doesn’t happen very often and it’s rarer if there’s a letter in those envelopes because everybody you know texts or emails and a hand-written, lick-the-envelope, put-astamp-on-it letter is so oldschool. Who even writes letters anymore? Author Michael Eric Dyson, that’s who, and in “Long Time Coming,” you’ll want to read them.

“Dear Elijah McClain...” he begins.

When the grief of history is a part of a burden, the pain of now becomes keener and the action more urgent.

“Black death” has been in this country for more than 400 years. We know how Elijah died and the knowledge is unbearable. It’s time for a “reckoning.”

“Dear Emmett Till,” it hurts to know that if you were a boy today, your life could be taken as easily as it was in 1955. Maybe not the same way, but taken nonetheless and the fact that it happens is something most white folks don’t see. We need all eyes opened When George Floyd died, it echoed what happened to you, “dear Eric Garner.” You said you couldn’t breathe; Floyd said he couldn’t breathe.

Neither of you were real troublemakers, but both of you called out in pain to the “blue plague,” and lost your lives anyhow.

As you may have guessed – especially if you’ve read any other works by author Michael Eric Dyson – there’s a lot to unpack inside “Long Time Coming.”

It starts without preamble, as Dyson dives straight into his series of letters written to Black Americans whose deaths demand a reckoning with racial issues. This abruptness is unusual in a work of nonfiction, and it forces readers to pay immediate attention.

Though there’s a lot of repetition from story to story here, each chapter examines a separate aspect of racism by speaking directly to a deceased individual while also referring to another. There’s an urge embedded in this, to understand each issue before dismantling it, and to see how it matters. Readers may also find Dyson’s choice of subjects to be interesting; there are other victims of racial violence he could’ve picked, as evidenced by his long list of names, each of which begs to have their own stories told.

Perhaps the most crucial thing about this book, though, is that it’s not so much for Black readers as it is for White ones who metaphorically started school late last May. Respectful discussion, soul-searching, urgency: if that’s what you need, “Long Time Coming” delivers.
