Earlier this week on Tuesday afternoon there was a webinar with the Congressional Black Caucus that I participated in as a member of the Black press. On that call Senator Meeks explained the details of the second wave of small business COVID-19 funding and what looks like a greater chance that small minority-owned, mom and pop businesses can look forward to some federal funds from this second wave. So far Black businesses that I know of have not received any relief. I am hopeful this second round will make its way to our community.

The Good News for COVID-19 and New York is that it seems we are on a downward curve and getting closer to reopening some businesses.

Many of us feel we have suffered enough but of course it is better to suffer with 6 feet distancing than to be 6 feet under.

s we try to come to some semblance of understanding about our present situation, perhaps one thought to look at could be, we are in World War III. The COVID-19 army under the parental command of CORONAVIRUS has been marching mightily across the world nearly five months that we are aware of.

Slowly, yet strategically the COVID-19 soldiers have overtaken countries that felt they were a stronghold against any enemy’s forces.

Much to everyone’s chagrin that apparently has not been the case as we have witnessed it; the mightiest have dropped to

their knees and sheltered in place. Citizens are hunkered down in towns and cities and borders are sealed.

At the strike of clocks at 7:00 p.m. in numerous locations, people clap in appreciation and prayer for those who have stepped ON POINT to help those weakened, affected and afflicted by the mysterious

Yet, some people of all ages, continue to participate in the spreading of the disease by blatantly disobeying the rules that are clearly mandated for the good of us all.

This is not the time to be in denial or just plain trifling. What once was is not now and it is getting harder and harder to predict when things will operate in ways that were once known to be normal.

A change has come and we, the people, must be mindful of the part we play in order to thrive and ultimately survive this crisis.

We are ON PAUSE until the COVID-19 soldiers

have been eliminated or retreat because something stronger, hopefully new medicine or a vaccine, has come on the battlefield.

We, the people, are the ones who are ON PAUSE because we are not trained to fight alongside those ON POINT in the insidious manner that is crucial in this kind of pandemic.

However, we do have a responsibility to those who know what to do. We must remain steady in place, practicing consistent inhouse procedures and only when necessary gear-up appropriately if we must break self-imposed isolation. We must protect those who are able to be ON POINT for us.

Let the truth be known, the life you save is not just

your own. You could be a carrier who has been in the presence of someone infected and you do not have any symptoms yet.

We MUST be conscientiously concerned about protecting each other. Do not remove your finger off the PAUSE button yet.

Stay safe, stay strong, stay home and stay prayerfully positive, this too shall pass.

• Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help prevent dehydration. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dehydration can cause

unclear thinking and mood swings. Not sure how much to drink? Many medical professionals suggest following the 8x8 rule, eight ounces of water eight times a day.

• Stay Connected: Just because you can’t be with friends and family in person doesn’t mean you can’t stay in touch. Set up time to connect with video chats, phone calls and emails. Staying connected doesn’t have to be high-tech. Have kids or just a kid at heart? Write encouraging messages on your driveway or in your windows for your neighbors, and postal and delivery workers.

• Know Your Options: One of the best ways to prepare is knowing what to do if you start to show symptoms.

Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program has been Streamlined

N

ew York recently streamlined coronavirus-related unemployment applications as the state deals with an unprecedented surge of job-

less claims. The state rolled out a new system this past Monday that removes a step that had held up help for thousands of New Yorkers waiting for financial relief and

allows people to file directly for federally backed Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.

That means those who are self-employed, independent

contractors, gig workers, farmers, people with COVID-19 or caring for a family member with the virus no longer have to apply for standard unemployment insur-

ance, get rejected and then reapply for the coronavirus-specific benefits.

The federal Pandemic Assistance program provides up to 39 weeks of unem-

ployment benefits for those who are unable to work because of a coronavirus-related reason but are not eligible for regular or extended unemployment benefits.

During this period of uncertainty, finding ways to pay bills or keep medical benefits are top concerns for many. Here are some tips from Janine Nowatzky, managing director of Inside Rx. What is unemployment insurance and how do I sign up?

Unemployment insurance is a program between your state and the federal government that provides money when you’ve lost your job. With the federal government’s passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you can receive an enhanced benefit. It authorizes: • Self-employed and gig workers to receive benefits • An extra $600 a week for up to six months • An extra 13 weeks of benefits beyond what your state currently provides Each state’s rules are different. Review your

state’s unemployment insurance program to learn about how to apply for benefits. Or learn more by visiting www.usa.gov/unemployment.

How much money will I get?

It will vary by state.

But remember, under the CARES Act, you will be able to get an additional $600 a week for up to six months. The program’s

start date was set to Jan. 27. So if you lost your job due to COVID-19-related reasons between the end of January and now, then you should be able to receive the additional benefit.

What about health insurance?

It’s scary to think about getting through this pandemic without health insurance. What benefits you’re able to keep all

depends on who you work for. The first step is to ask your employer. They may allow you to continue your health coverage for a short period of absence.

If your employer is allowing you to keep your insurance, be sure to clarify if your missed premium payments will be: • Covered partially or fully by your employer • Deducted when you

come back to work • Have to be paid now to continue getting insurance Your employer may also offer health care coverage through COBRA, but that can be very expensive.

A limited number of states have also opened enrollment to their own Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance exchang-

es. You may be able to sign up for a health insurance plan – even without a life-changing event, which is the usual exception to the standard open enrollment periods.

What about prescription medications?

It’s so important to keep taking your medications to stay as strong and healthy as possible.

Do they really “Care” about the small businesses in the epicenter of the epicenter? The (CARES) Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act has delivered millions of dollars to “small businesses” in this nation. I have been publishing community newspapers in Harlem and other predominantly African-American communities in New York for 25 years now. I know many, if not most small business owners in Harlem and I don’t know of any who has received any relief in the form of grants or loans as of press time this week, including the Harlem News.

I already filed and paid my 2019 corporate and personal taxes, I am sole owner of

As an advocate for small business owners, I have reached out to the politicians we elected, I have reached out to corporations and organizations who claim they care about the small businesses in our community and I have got-

I know the event will look different than I planned because one of the business owners I planned to honor who had been in business in Har-

There are businesses uptown who have benefited, many in Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights and Marble Hill – good for them. However, those of us in central Harlem who are predominantly African-American continue to apply and wait. I have spoken to many small business owner over the past few weeks.

he Seventh annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week celebration (H2W) will be virtual this year using social media and other new media options provided by Matt McCoy Founder/CEO of the Soul City TV Broadcast Network (www. soulcity.me).

Matt is also a member of the H2W planning committee which consist of six incredi-

ble individuals who came together on the last day of H2W 2019 at the Sacred Commerce Holistic Wellness Expo and decided to develop a planning committee for H2W 2020.

The brand H2W was introduced to the committee by Dr. Flora Luyando a gifted acupuncturist and the spiritual fire of the committee. Marisol Rodríguez used her social media and journalism skills to help provide H2W updates and announcements on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

Karen Webster who is truly an attractive Mindset Strategist and host of the Saturday morning Awaken and Arise Experience on WHCR 90.3FM helped the committee to practice social distancing by scheduling weekly Zoom meetings; a new learning

curve for me.

Bailey Jeremie developed the H2W website and at times had to use her skills as a family therapist during a few of our early committee meetings. I will always be grateful to Jasmine Phifer a young and talented Soul City executive for keeping Matt McCoy and I connected.

When we first started meeting a few months ago, no one dreamed that H2W 2020 would have to be virtual, but due to the unique skill sets of the H2W committee it will happen. I would like to thank the H2W 2020 planning team for their time, effort, energy and spirit.

The following are some of the highlights for Harlem Holistic Wellness Week 2020; The dates are Saturday April 25th – Saturday May

2nd. H2W traditionally starts on the last Saturday in April to coincide with the annual World Tai Chi and Qigong Day founded by Bill Douglas in 1999.

I will interview Bill Douglas on Saturday April 25th along with Dr. Robert Woodbine the person who invited me to join him in organizing a Harlem celebration of World Tai Chi/Qigong day in 2007.

Robert Woodbine recently completed a three year intensive training program with Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming in the mountains of Northern California. Dr. Yang is a descendent of the family who created the Yang Taijiquan system, one of the best-known Tai Chi systems in the world. I will encourage Dr. Woodbine to talk about that experience during our discussion.

My other two guest for the panel discussion are Grand Master Abdul Musawwir and Grand Master Lamar Thornton. Abdul Musawwir has been my teacher and a friend for over twenty years. H2W will be a vehicle to promote a wonderful documentary “Tai Chi Internal Healing Arts.”

The focus of the film is to provide insight on the unique talent and skills of Grand master Musawwir, one for the most respected Tai Chi practitioners on the East Coast.

The project was produced by Tehuti Films.

My third guest will be Grand Master Lamar Thornton another twenty year plus friend who introduced me to the art of Kendo and was my first tai chi instructor. He understood my interest in the healing focus of Tai Chi and Qigong so he introduced me to his instructor Grand Master Abdul Musawwir. This H2W

“Ready to Rise” by Jo Saxton REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

Y

ou know you have it.

There’s all kinds of potential inside you but how can you actually use it? Says author Jo Saxton in her new book “Ready to Rise,” it takes determination, a community, strength, belief in yourself, and a little leaning on God. After hearing her seventh-grade daughter give a speech to classmates, Jo Saxton reflected on what her child said and how, as a teenager, Saxton’s daughter understood that she had it within herself to help fix “a broken world.”

That was a lesson that

Saxton herself didn’t possess at that same age.

Born in Nigeria, the child of a broken home, Saxton was raised by an elderly foster mother whom she cared for deeply. Still, she says, she was fearful that something was wrong with her, and leadership was very far from her mind then. “... I was the last person who should be given opportunity for influence,” she muses.

Many women are like that, in that respect, Saxton suggests, and it’s not good – for a woman herself, for any business she may be invested in, or for the world at large.

Disempowerment, for example, is detrimental to women who are

searching for mentors or “living examples.” As for business, “including women in leadership improves a business’s bottom line,” and diversity improves its culture.

Personally, Saxton says that she relies heavily on her faith to find the right path toward influence. She often thinks of the women in the Bible, the travails they endured, and the actions they took. Biblical tales have many lessons for today’s women and their quest for “faith-shaped purpose...”

Embrace the gifts God has given you, Saxton says; He was happy to give them to you, so you should use them.

Find your voice and use it, too; outspokenness

with purpose is not a bad thing. You are smart; never forget that. Learn to “grow your grit” and build the “village” you need for success. And finally, take care of yourself, in mind, body, and spirit, and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.

The very first thing you need to know about “Ready to Rise” is that it’s very faith-based.

That doesn’t at all make this a bad book, but it’s absolutely going to change the audience for it: women who’re looking for a strictly-business book will want to look elsewhere.

Yes, the advice here is solid and do-able, especially for the woman who truly needs that

first baby-step toward self-confidence, or for the quiet type who’s newly assimilating into a large corporation. Yes, author Jo Saxton offers a wide variety and range of business-related topics as they relate to women in the workplace, but most of those are woven with mostly Old Testament stories and musings on the life and works of Jesus and several women of the Bible. Again, not bad – just be aware.

Men, of course, can read this book but it’s really meant for women who need a faith-based boost. If that’s you, then find it: “Ready to Rise” has potential.
