SPOOKTACULAR!! Paris, Tenn.–The Paris Parks and Recreation Department has been busy getting Eiffel Tower Park ready for this weekend’s Spooktacular and one of the main features is the PARIS sign painted with scary and spooky images. The creative crew designing the sign was made up of Parks & Rec staff Joel Crosno and Emily Berry and Emily’s husband Alex. The Spooktacular will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, October 24 at Eiffel Tower Park and thousands of little goblins and their parents show up for the event each year. A highlight of the afternoon will include the annual tossing of the giant pumpkin from a BPU bucket truck. Activities will include tons and tons of candy
for trick-or-treating, costume contests, a Halloween trail, lots of food trucks, games and prizes. Recreation Program Coordinator Emily Berry provided the schedule for the Costume Contests: Birth to 3: 1:30p 4-7y: 2:00p 8-11y: 2:30p 12-14y: 3:00p 15 and over: 3:20p Family/Group: 3:40p As always, free to the public (minus food trucks).

Be Prepared for Winter with Proper Safety Essentials by John Wambles Even though our winters are not severe here, we still can get bouts of bad weather. It is never too soon to be prepared for an emergency. These are a few items you may want to keep in your vehicle just in case you should have a mishap on the road this cold weather season. Let’s start with personal care items. If you should get stuck in bad weather, there may also be lots of others stuck out there too. So a wait for a tow truck or for someone to get to you may take awhile. Keep nonperishable snacks and water in your vehicle. Small bottles of water and snacks like jerky, nuts, granola bars and crackers can easily be stored in your vehicle. Blankets, warm caps and gloves are excellent to have on hand. Depending on
your gas situation or the positioning of your vehicle if it should be off road, you may not need to keep it running. Make sure there are plenty of items to keep you warm. A first aid kit should be kept in your car for any minor emergencies. Always keep an extra phone charger just for your car. Don’t leave home without it. These items should always be in your vehicle. But they can sometimes find there way to other places so double check and make sure you have them in there during winter. Always have jumper cables. Headlights these days can be programmed to turn themselves off but some older vehicles do not have that feature. The power of your battery can be diminished by cold weather too. A small toolkit will always be handy to have in your vehicle. Make sure your jack is in it’s proper place and that your spare is

A flashlight can not only assist after the sun goes down but can help locate things located in the dark spaces of your vehicle. Keep Headlights Shining Bright for Long Winter Nights by John Wambles The time will be changing soon and the nights will be longer. It is extremely important during this time of year that your lighting system on your vehicle is working properly. Having quality headlights can make a big difference in ensuring your have safe evening travels. First and foremost, make sure all lights are working properly. Check both the low and high beams of the front headlights. This is not an expense that needs to be skipped. A quality headlight is a must for safe night driving. Keep your headlights clean. Stubborn grime can build up and diminish the brightness of your headlights. Make sure the headlights are aligned correctly. Headlights that are out of alignment can not only be
obstruct oncoming motorists but can not fully illuminate the road ahead. Both incidents can easily cause an accident. Check the seals on your headlights and for moisture. Nothing will burn out a light quicker than water getting inside your headlights. Time to check your blinker fluid. Maybe there isn’t any blinker fluid to check but it is a good time to make sure they are working properly in both the front and the back. Blinkers seem to be an option for most drivers these days but they can help prevent accidents. Especially during winter months, indicating that you are turning on a slick road gives the driver behind you notification and time to slow down. Even a slight rear end bump can cause hundreds of dollars in damage. Brake lights should be kept maintained year-
round. Again in winter, those brake lights can help indicate to the driver behind your intentions are and hopefully avoiding an accident. Additional brake lights that are in rear windows and other places on cars should also be kept in proper working order. Last but not least, make sure your interior lights in your vehicle cabin and on your dashboard are working. Nothing more frustrating that trying to find things in your vehicle in the dark. For an extra safety precaution you may want to keep a working flashlight in your glove compartment. Keep those lights shining bright and have a safe driving experience this winter.

Tire Care Tips for Winter Weather

Winter time is especially important to keep check on your automobile’s tires. A few easy things to do can ensure a much safer driving experience during a season known for bad weather and slick roads. One of the first things to consider may be investing in a good set of winter tires. When living in areas known for icy or snowy conditions this may be an expense worth making. The deeper treads and special traction on winter tires may be the difference between getting to your destination or sliding off the side of the road. Those that travel a lot during the holidays or for work may consider this option. Proper tire pressure is a must year-round. It is a critical factor for tire maintenance in the winter. Cold weather significantly affects tire pressure. It can cause a drop of 1-2 PSI for every 10 degree decrease. An under-inflated tire can cause an need to increase stopping distances and reduce traction. Check your pressure first thing in the mornings before you begin driving. Keeping tires balanced and aligned will ensure even wearand-tear. When tires are out of balanced or misaligned it can lead to excessive vibration leading to lots of wear-and-tear. Salt, ice and
snow can increase that vibration to your vehicle. Irregular wear on your tires can lead to a less smooth ride and cause that pulling feeling. The less distraction during winter driving the better. The key to longevity is proper installation and rotation of tires. It is not a good idea to mix your seasonal tires. Either use all year round tires at once or all winter tires at once. Rotation also helps prevent wear from tires that may be more prone to driving on the snowy or icy sides of the road. Tread depth should constantly be of concern during the winter months. Tread depth ensures tires can grip snowy, icy and wet roads. Driving with low tread can increase the risk of sliding, accidents and hydroplaning. Invest in a depth gauge to monitor your tread. It is not recommended to mix tread patterns on dual-wheel vehicles. It can lead to uneven wear and loss of traction. When winter is over it is important to properly store winter tires. Clean them thoroughly before storing them in a cool, dry dark space. Heat and excessive light can deteriorate and deform your tires. Time to Get Your Boat Ready for the Cold Weather
by John Wambles It is that time of year already. Time to deal with the boat before it is too cold. These tips can make the job a whole lot easier. The decision must always be made whether to pull the boat from the water. There are pros and cons to both. Smaller boats, especially those on a
trailer should be stored on land. Larger boats may want to consider the climate before making the big decision. Maintenance is much easier when it is on land. Dock lines, fenders and bilge pumps need to be considered when leaving in the water. A boat cover is a must for winter time storage. It is an expense worth the money. Shrink wrapping has become
a new option for covering boats. Waterproof and tear resistant are qualities that you want your boat cover to have. A custom made cover that fits tightly is also a good recommended. Make sure you boat is completely clean and dried before storage. Remove all food and drinks from your boat to keep rodents from your vessel. Wipe everything down and sanitize your boat. Make sure everything is completely dry to prevent molding. Winterize your water systems before putting away for the winter. Make sure and remove all untreated or unnecessary water from your boat. It can freeze and damage where it is contained. Always use antifreeze that is made specifically for boats and not automobiles. Add a fuel stabilizer to your fuel systems. During the long winter months fuel can degrade and break down. Change your fuel
filters and water separators as part of your winterization routine. Batteries should be disconnected and the terminals cleaned. Make sure batteries are fully charged. A discharged battery can freeze more easily It is probably best to remove electronics from your boat if possible. The cold can effect its over all performance and there is less likelihood of theft if storing your boat outside of your home. A boat trailer needs a little TLC as well. Make sure tires are properly inflated when in transport. The cold can change the tires PSI. Thoroughly clean and dry your trailer to prevent rust and mold. Double check all blinkers, safety chains, straps and axles to ensure proper working condition. Boats are a huge part of our Lake Life in this area. Taking care of your boat is just as important when it is not on the water. Extend the life and the enjoyment of your boat with proper maintenance and care.

Transmission fluid and brake fluids should also be checked and changed. Your car will run so much more smoothly. Lube your car locks and door hinges.
