White Men Can’t Count: The Sequel

he phenomenal success of the Black Panther film has inspired people across generations, in the process delivering a box-office bonanza to Marvel Studios and its parent company Disney/ABC Television Group. The film, which redefines the title of “blockbuster,” made over $700 million dollars worldwide in the first two weeks of its run – and the week is not yet over. By way of celebration Disney announced on Wednesday that it will make a grand philanthropic gesture – donating some of the proceeds from Black Panther to develop STEM programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. So, what is their sharing and caring worth? A whopping $1 million!

In case you think you read that wrong – let’s restate: Black Panther ticket sales were more than $700 million dollars in less than two weeks and Disney will throw some crumbs to the tune of $1 million to the kids who turned out in droves to see this film.

The Boys & Girls Club will use the onetime grant to establish new STEM centers to serve kids and teens, with a focus on New York, Philadelphia and Washington, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago. The nonprofit has, in recent years, provided robotics instruction, 3-D printers, high-definition video production and conferencing equipment to young people in underserved areas.

This reporter wrote an article for the The City Sun newspaper some time ago and titled it, “White Men Can’t Count.”

It was about the vast underreporting of the numbers of people who showed up to

participate in the first Million Man March.

Fast-forward to this week and Disney’s gift inspires the same observation.

Bob Iger, Disney CEO, said, “It’s thrilling to see how inspired young audiences were by the spectacular technology in the film. It’s fitting that we show our appreciation by helping advance STEM programs for youth, especially in underserved areas of the country, to give them the knowledge and tools to build the future they want.”

Disney might consider that building the future they want would be easier with say, $100 million dollars. After all, it’s only two weeks out and this film is projected to possibly be the ninth film in box office history to make $1 billion dollars globally in less than three weeks. If so, it will outpace Stars Wars: The Last Jedi, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Avatar and Iron Man 3, among others. (You’ll notice that several of these are sequels, where Black Panther is pulling these numbers its first time out.)

Black Panther is set in the fictional Wakanda, blessed with a surplus of the miracle metal vibranium (also fictional) which allows it to manufacture any technology imaginable – at least anything imagined by scientist prodigy Shuri, just 16 and the younger sister of King T’Challa.

In the Marvel universe, she’s the smartest person in the world and invents or controls high-powered vehicles, weapons and other innovations for the nation.

Perhaps Shuri can come up with a calculator that Disney execs can use to compute the value of what they have and the insult their offer might imply.

President Donald Trump denying the Golden State Warriors a visit to the White House actually provided an opportunity “to celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion,” the Warriors said.

While in Washington, D.C., for an upcoming game against the Wizards on Wednesday, the 2017 NBA champions took local children to visit the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) on Tuesday.

“It’s their championship,” Head Coach Steve Kerr told ESPN. “They got disinvited to the White House, so it’s up to them what they wanted to do. So they made their plans. I want the players to have a good day and to do something positive and to enjoy what they’re doing.”

Warriors guard Klay Thompson revealed the plans after their game in New York on Monday night.

“The White House is a great honor,” Thompson said. “But there are some other circumstances that we felt uncomfortable going.

“We’re not going to politicize anything.

We’re going to hang out with some kids and take them to the African American Museum, and hopefully teach them some things along the way, and life lessons, and hopefully give them some great memories.”

The tour only included players, coaches and students.

On Sept. 23, Trump took to Twitter to revoke the customary invitation for NBA champions:

At a press conference on Sept. 22, Warriors guard Stephen Curry said that he, personally, did not want to visit the White House, but a final decision by the organization had not yet been made.

“It’s not just me going to the White House,” he said, “if it was it would be a short conversation. But it’s the organization; it’s the team. It’s hard to say because I don’t know exactly what we’re going to do.”

In response to Trump’s tweet, the Warriors released the following statement: “We accept that President Trump has made it clear that we are not invited. We believe there is nothing more American than our citizens having the right to express themselves freely on matters important to them. We’re disappointed that we did not have an opportunity during this process to share our views or have open dialogue on issues impacting our communities that we felt would be important to raise.

“In lieu of a visit to the White House, we have decided that we’ll constructively use our trip to the nation’s capital in February to celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion — the values that we embrace as an organization.”

After their first championship, the team met with former President Barack Obama, but don’t seem dismayed about not going back to the White House.

“It’s kind of beating a dead horse at this point,” Curry told ESPN on Monday. “We’re excited to have an opportunity that we’re going to tomorrow as a team, but other than that it’s a business trip and we’re excited to keep the road trip going. So that’s really all it’s about.”

T

he behavior of security officers at the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas H.S. in Parkland, Florida stands in stark contrast to the heroism of Capitol Hill Police Officer Crystal Griner at a baseball field shooting in Washington, D.C. last June. On this first day of International Women’s Month, we salute the bravery of Griner, who, along with her partner David Bailey, rushed toward disturbed gunman James T. Hodgkinson, who had suddenly started shooting, critically wounding Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others. The shooting took place at a Congressional Republican baseball practice game at a park in the nation’s capital.

Griner and her partner both continued to run to help apprehend the shooter, although they both sustained injuries from bullets he fired.

She was hit in the ankle and Bailey in the arm. Griner and her partner, a Black man, helped prevent what pols present said could have been a large-scale massacre.

“A rifle against a handgun. That is not a fair fight… ...They were warriors,” one congressman said. They had the Public Safety Office Medal of Valor placed around their necks by President Trump, who recently claimed he would run into gunfire himself.

Also interesting is that both Griner, a lesbian, and Bailey, are assigned to Scalise’s detail and are credited with helping to save his life. Of note is that Scalise was criticized for speaking at an anti-gay forum a few months later.

Vocal Opposition to the Closing of Renewal Schools

I

f the mayor wanted to see parent engagement in action, it was live and intense last night, February 28, in the Murry Bergtraum H.S. auditorium on Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan, where hundreds of parents, grandparents, children and teachers from endangered schools raised their voices in unison to demand that their schools be kept open.

For several months (some weeks) they had voiced opposition to the closing of Renewal Schools, sending “hands off” messages loud and clear that the DOE’s course of action was not only unfair, but possibly illegal. They questioned the reasons high-performing schools were on the chopping the block; the process of how they were informed; attributed to gentrification; and even, of late, the possibility that the possible mass closures was a real estate deal in the works.

Last evening, before the 13-member

speaking on behalf of his school, PS 42 in the Rockaways, said whatever happened he would remember that night and the strange events involving two letters that brought him to the meeting where he demanded that the Panel tell the truth, and not play the communities “for fools.”

Former councilman Mark Treyger accused the city of acting in bad faith. In 2014 Mayor DiBlasio said the “renewal schools” would have 5 years to turn around. “So this meeting is premature!” said Treyger, also a former teacher.

One speaker saw a “troubling self-fulfilling prophecy” where unrealistic goals are set, and support is not given. “Our children are paying the price of a historic disinvestment in the education of the young people”.

Panel on Educational Policy (PEP) made the final decision on the DOE’s proposal to close the schools, families, administrators, and supporters were given 2-3 minute to speak. They were eloquent, tough, bold.

They did not beg nor plead. They were warriors of all ages and nationalities from mostly Black and Brown neighborhoods, riveting in their denouncement of the greed and “gentrification disguised as revitalization” that brought them to that point.

The stories appeared to overlap. Good schools striving to do better; getting better, and miles before the finish line, on their way to the gold, cut down before they could reach it. The crowd was united in mission: no reason to shut schools down and it was determined to fight for their schools and their children’s right to attend them in their communities. They were united in story: there was no reason for their schools to be shut down. Except maybe it had to do with hidden agendas. It was unjust and illegal, they all said.

Amid impassioned shouts of “Shame on you!!” they asked that the investigate every possible option before closing schools that are trusted places and anchors of the communities. “Why close a school like PS 25, that is outperforming the city averages in English and Math?” asked the PS 25 PTA president.

ccording to our analysis, in nearly half (or 42 percent) of Renewal Schools, there was no reduction in average class size from November 2014 to November 2017.

Of the schools that did not reduce class size, the average increase in class size was more than two students per class, with some schools increasing class sizes by significantly more than that.

“Even among those schools which did

lower class sizes, 18 percent did so by less than one student per class on average. Not one of the Renewal Schools this fall capped class size at the levels in the city’s original C4E plan, that is, 20 students per class in grades K-3, 23 students in 4th-8th grades and 25 students per class in high school. USA POLITICS 101 ALBANY, NY: All branches of government and politicos from both sides of the aisle attended most of the official and private parties at the Annual NYS Association of Black and Latino Legislative Weekend Conference in Albany on February 16-18.

This year, New Yorkers will vote for NYS Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller and for congressional reps. US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is running for reelection. NYS Assemblymen and Senators are also on the ballot. So, 2018 is a midterm year, and a very busy one. NY incumbents Governor Cuomo and Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul were ubiquitous and gracious hosts during the weekend. Hochul was endearing herself to downstate Blacks and Latinos. Hochul will have an African-American Primary opponent downstate, NYC Councilman Jumaane Williams, from Brooklyn, who is a rising star in downstate Democratic politics.

NY: The #METOO movement spread like an epidemic all across the United States since its inception. Its message normally is loud and clear, and many men have suffered consequences unimaginable a year ago.

Albany, NY is tone-deaf or does not give a damn about #METOO. A young political aide alleged that NYS Senator Jeff Klein involuntarily French-kissed her in front of a bar and nothing has happened. Senator Klein heads the rogue Democrat group, the Independent Democratic Conference, formed in 2011, which caucuses with the Senate GOP minority, giving the latter majority status. Klein’s power as the head of the IDC in Albany, has grown astronomically.

A real power broker in the Senate, Klein has become the 4th person in the “Three Men in A Room” power circle, which makes everything happen in Albany. Three men in a room used to be the governor, the Assembly Speaker and the Senate Majority Leader.

Now it includes rogue Senator Jeff Klein, who cannot be contained by the Democrats.

He ignores their leaders and enjoys great

independence. Will Albany do something about the former Senate aide’s claim about Klein’s alleged forcible kissing episode in 2015. Many powerful men have fallen like trees because of untowards behavior towards women. The IDC takes power Jesse Hamilton from everyone who voted for a Democrat. In addition to the untouchable Klein, the Independent Democratic Conference members are Jesse Hamilton, Marison Alcantara, Jose Peralta, Marison Alcantara D i a n e Savino, Tony Avella, David Valesky and David Carlucci. Most of them will have Primary challengers this year. Klein is like Teflon.

HARLEM UPDATES The Carver Federal Savings Bank sold its Harlem headquarters, located at 75 West 125th Street, for $19.4 million to CHOMPOL, a subsidiary of Gatsby Enterprises. Founded in 1948, Carver Federal Savings Bank is the largest Africanand Caribbean-American-managed bank in the USA. When it opened, its welcome mat attracted Black customers and depositors.

It offered mortgages for adults and a Xmas Club for children. For 60 years, Carver has been positioned on 125th Street, Harlem’s main commercial corridor until Freedom National, a commercial Black bank, opened in the 60s, until it folded in the 70s. Today, Carver Federal Savings boasts nine NYC branches in Harlem, Brooklyn and Jamaica.

BUSINESS MATTERS Three commercial banks commit $40 million for use by NYC for a loans initiative targeted to minority- and women-owned businesses. The donor banks are Amalgamated, which will put up $20 million; TD and Bank of America will each put up $10 million.

NYC has already invested $20 million toward this revolving loan fund.

NEWSMAKERS RIP: Lerone Bennett, 89, died last week.

Black American historian and journalist who worked at Johnson Publications for decades, first with Jet magazine, then Ebony, where he landed as Lerone Bennett executive editor. A prolific author, he wrote BEFORE THE MAYFLOWER, a nonfiction work about Africans in North America before the Mayflower arrived.

He also wrote “What Manner of Man: A Biography of Martin Luther King, Jr.” RIP: Bill and Camille Cosby’s daughter, Ensa Cosby, 44, died from renal disease.

One of the Cosby’s five children, she is survived by her parents and sibling Ericka, Erinn and Evin.

A Black Panther Voice Roars from Brooklyn ■■

he “Black Panther” movie continues to break box office charts.

According to IndieWire on line magazine, the movie is “on course to become the greatest comic-book movie in history.” These accolades mostly point to the millions it will make. Other political and cultural factors contribute to its distinctive success such as display of black power, black pride and black beauty. While the movie sets historical records, a part of its foundation has its origins right here in Brooklyn, New York.

James Mathis III has been the voice of the Black Panther in Marvel’s Avengers for four seasons. He joins a list of a few wellknown actors who have played that role before him according to Behind the Voice website: Keith David, Taye Diggs, Djimon Hounsou.

Mathis’ early beginnings include P.S. 327, Dr. Rose English Elementary School, in

He continued in Bushwick, Brooklyn at Philippa Schuyler Intermediate for the gifted and talented, where, according to his mother, Minister Shirlene Holman, “The acting spark was ignited.” Mathis said, in his Fort Greene high school, Brooklyn

Tech, he found his niche when school play director Susan Palmieri cast him in leading roles. Shakespearean English teacher and Assistant Principal Dr. Robert Sinclair also provided inspiration. “He made Shakespeare fun and encouraged a deeper understanding of literature and Elizabethan English.”

During a phone interview with Dr. Sinclair, he stated, “Mathis always had the voice and was always a professional even as a teenager,” which, no doubt, explains how he rose to represent his school in the NYC Shakespeare Competition reciting sonnets and excerpts from plays.

In addition to his teachers, Mathis credits Spike Lee and Denzel Washington for his deep dive into acting. The release of Malcolm X when Mathis was still a high school student and the proximity of the 40 Acres and A Mule retail shop across the street from his school, conveyed a message of the possibilities the world of acting could provide. For college, he attended University of Southern California to study production.

Trained as an actor, Mathis landed roles on television shows such as “ER,” “Pacific Blue” and “City of Angels.” He harnessed his thespian skills, education, training and the depth of his voice to find voice-over acting in various video games and animated series.

Mathis found staying power, most recently, as T’Challa, the Black Panther, in Marvels Avenger series through which he supports his wife and two children in California.

Speaking of her son, Minister Holman stated, “I’m grateful he stayed the course and persevered. He is blessed to do what he loves.”

Black Panther, the animated series is available on YouTube, Amazon Video, itunes, Vudu, and Google Play. James Mathis III will continue to harness his Brooklyn, Shakespeare and other thespian skills as he approaches season five of Marvels Avengers, and T’Challa will play a greater role.

Thinker’s Notebook by Marlon Rice-- “It’s Not a Game”

n 2015, the University of Oregon generated $196 million dollars in revenue from their Division I sports program.

That figure includes $35.6 million dollars in licensing fees, $26.6 million dollars in ticket sales, $54 million dollars in football revenue, $8.7 million dollars in basketball revenue and $124.9 million dollars in booster donations to the sports program. In that same year, the University of Texas generated $161 million dollars, the University of Michigan generated $158 million dollars and the University of Alabama generated $153.2 million dollars. The 231 NCAA Division I schools generated a total of $9.15 billion dollars in revenue from their sports programs in 2015, every dime of it created from the participation of student athletes that aren’t being paid anything at all.

In October 2017, Lawrence “Poppy” Livers, a former student athlete, filed a Class Action lawsuit against the National College Athletic Association and 20 universities.

His claim was that student athletes are “employees,” and as such are entitled to compensation. His contention is a simple one. Student athletes receive scholarships to universities. These scholarships require them to participate in NCAA athletics under supervision on a full-time basis. They work for the school. They practice and compete for the school, and this act generates revenue for the school, and therefore, they are employees in the same way as student ticket-takers and concession-stand employees.

Recently, in response to the lawsuit, the NCAA cited a famous 13th amendment case

as the reason why they believe they shouldn’t be forced to pay student athletes. The case is Vanskike vs. Peters, and deals with Daniel Vanskike, a prisoner at a correctional facility in Joliet, Illinois, suing Howard Peters, director of the Illinois State Department of Corrections. Vanskike argued that prisoners should be paid a federal minimum wage for their work while incarcerated. He lost his lawsuit due to the 13th amendment which states that, “Neither slave nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment of a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”

The amendment supports free prison labor, and so Vanskike lost his claim.

But wait a minute. What on earth does free prison labor have to do with paying student athletes? Why would the NCAA cite a case involving a prisoner seeking minimum wage for prison work as a supporting precedent against paying kids that go to college and play sports? Well, one reason is that they’ve used the case as precedent before and won. In the 2016 Berger vs.

NCAA case, the Vanskike case was used to establish that, just as prisoners working in a prison, there is no employment relationship between the NCAA and its athletes. The NCAA won that argument and that case.

In fact, the Vanskike case has been cited 16 times, 14 times in reference to another case involving a prison labor dispute, and the other 2 times in reference to cases involving the NCAA. So then, it seems evident that the NCAA is content with defining the work that student athletes do as unpaid labor, and

Brewer salutes new leaders for Black History Month at Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater

EW YORK – Monday evening, Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer hosted the Manhattan Black History Month Activism Awards, honoring five young black activists fighting for justice on a variety of fronts in New York and across the country. The event took place on the Soundstage at Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater.

The honorees included: Hawk Newsome, President, Black Lives Matter of Greater New York.

Hawk Newsome is an activist in the New Civil Rights Movement. After dropping out of high school, Newsome turned his life around and obtained a GED, B.S., and law degree, working in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, founding an athletic club working with at-risk youth, and engaging in political activism and community organizing.

A member of Justice League NYC since 2013, Newsome helps lead efforts to end injustice in the criminal justice system both in New York and across the country.

Kemah George, Community Engagement Manager, New York Immigration Coalition.

Kemah George works to strengthen immigrant communities through education and engagement, facilitating NYIC’s Black Immigrant Engagement Initiative and Know Your Rights workshops. Prior to joining NYIC, George served as the Coordinator of Social Justice at the YWCA of Brooklyn, where she developed programs and implemented social justice initiatives for women and girls. Born in Brooklyn to Liberian immigrants, she holds a law degree from Howard University School of Law, as well as a master’s in public policy and a bachelor’s in English education.

that unpaid labor nets billions of dollars to the colleges these student athletes play for.

Let that sink in for a moment. The NCAA just signed a $8.8 billion-dollar extension with the CBS network to televise March Madness until 2024. To those of us who love college basketball, March Madness is the climax of the season, a time to see our favorite young basketball players compete at the highest level against one another. We tune in to see the athletes, not to see the schools or the concession workers or the broadcasters.

We don’t tune in for athletic directors or the

alumni boosters. We watch the games to see the players. They are the draw. And yet, they aren’t paid a red cent for the blood, sweat and tears that they give to the game. And furthermore, the NCAA is perfectly content with the way things are set up. The exposure of this issue makes it difficult from a moral standpoint to support college sports. Making billions of dollars off of unpaid labor is akin to slavery, bottom line. March Madness starts next week. Let’s really make the NCAA have a mad March. Let’s not support this new age indentured servitude.

A Rousing Discussion at Black Media Roundtable

T

he Black news media – its importance and survival – was the subject at hand during Monday’s roundtable at For My Sweet in Brooklyn. “Real Black Media or Fake News?” brought community members out to share perspectives and strategies for supporting, accessing and centralizing Black media sources. On the panel were: editor of the long-running Amsterdam News Nayaba Arinde; Wuyi Jacobs of Afrobeat Radio, a public affairs and music show on WBAI-FM; native Brooklyn filmmaker Attika J. Torrence, and our own David Greaves, founder and publisher of Our Time Press.

The event, presented by the Jitu Weusi Institute for Development, Education and Activism, was organized by Marlon Rice and hosted by Basir Mchawi, whose show, “Education at the Crossroads,” airs on WBAIFM radio. The gathering proved to be fertile soil for the germination of ideas, which were shared without reticence. We present here only a few snippets of what was an honest, thorough and uplifting conversation: Wuyi Jacobs promoted the idea of Black publications in the U.S. partnering with African Continental news media. But he warned that the press does not exist in a vacuum and that a stable economy within the Black community is necessary in order for it to meet its full potential to thrive.

“The press cannot survive without an economy,” said Jacobs. “If you don’t have jobs, if your children don’t have jobs, they’re not going to be buying newspapers or visiting your website. They don’t come to my website. You know why? Because there are others that employ them, that have the resources to innovate, resources to get them into their own market. If we don’t pay our own children, somebody else is going to pay them. They’re not going to be working for you if you don’t pay them.

“So, there are some things that we really need to do beyond talking about creating content. That’s very important. We’re talking about owning our own narratives. That’s very important. But we need to move to the next step. What does it mean to own? How do you

And how do we make sure that it’s available to the 4.6 billion people on this planet if they want it at the tip of their fingers?

And it’s possible. It’s not like we don’t have the market. Every nation on the African Continent has a television station. Some have big media companies now.

“I went to Nigeria for the first time in 2013 and every single television I came across was tuned to FOX News and American stations.

That’s distressing, but it’s also an opportunity.

Let’s focus on the money, how we’re going to get the money, retain the money. Turn the tables.

Turn the tables!”

David Greaves saluted veteran radio host Bernard White, who was in the audience, and the late Samori Marksman as well, for the high-level of teaching they did over the air while at WBAI-FM. His thoughts on the evening’s topic were about optimizing the Web. “We can come together on the Internet, in terms of sharing files and videos, sharing links – African media, African-American media and Caribbean media. People should have a place on the Internet where they can see the list of various publications and Black radio stations.

That way, we can throw in our appeal and send

out our message. The Internet radio station that Bernard has is an example of something we can link to on our own websites.

[CPR Metro at communitypublicradio.org] “In terms of linking together, I think the Web is the easiest way to do it, although I think, as my wife says, that the Black media should come together around some particular subjects – have a theme each month or week to multiply our efforts so that people will hear the message through whichever medium. So that’s something we can think about.” Filmmaker Attika Torrence stressed the power of collaboration and the need to recognize that we already have it.

“I live my life by the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles [of Kwanzaa],” said Torrence. “That whole concept of ‘Black people don’t collaborate' – it doesn’t exist in my world. I work in a 100 percent collaborative industry. I’m a filmmaker. I work with my fam, extended and immediate.

“I grew up in The EAST [a ‘70s Black Cultural Nationalist organization]. I grew up in my own Wakanda. From there, I moved to Liberia, West Africa and that was another Wakanda. We took Blackness with us everywhere we went. And there are people to this day who are from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone that became my extended EAST family

of sorts, who didn’t understand what Kwanzaa was, who didn’t understand the Black American culture and we brought it with us. I grew up in a world where all my opportunities were available to me.”

Keith Forest, a publicist, asked a critically important question from the audience.

“What marketing efforts can we do as consumers - and I as a publicist – to assist you? ‘Cause I know I‘m always faced with that question, too. The numbers are the same; they’re not growing. And there have been efforts to mobilize the Black press collectively so that it can be more of a bargaining tool. What can we do over social media and otherwise to support you, to tell the world just how valuable you are in our community?

“We talk a lot about reaching out, but what I want to know is – in regard to the new ways that people get news – social media, blogs, Black Twitter… What are some of the steps that we can take – not just you news media people – but what are the steps we all can take when we leave here to dilute the amount of fake news that our children get and increase the amount of Black news that our children get?“ Nayaba Arinde responded: “I mean, it’s really sharing the knowledge, you know? Getting it out there. Like David was saying, the Internet is probably our greatest tool right now. And we all have to use that more successfully. For example, the Amsterdam News had a cover story featuring Ja Rule, who was speaking at City Hall. We had it on the front page, but he shared FOX’s interview on his social media, and not the Amsterdam News. Why would you share that and not all of them – or at least not ours – as well?

“So it’s how we view ourselves and what value we put on our mediums. And we (the Black media) know it; we share amongst ourselves. But we’ve got to get the community to know that. Don’t see our media as lesser than.

Share the links. Understand that we’re working together and that when we help you, you help us. Radio, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram – all of those we have to use better so that we can reach them [readers] where they live.”

Strategies to Get Accepted into Specialized High Schools ■■

n February 24, 2018 at Middle School 61 in Crown Heights, the community was invited to learn how to get their children accepted into Specialized High Schools (SHS). Specialized

High Schools are the city’s most academically rigorous high schools that set the majority of the enrolled students on a “lifelong success trajectory.” These high schools include Stuyvesant High School, Queens Science at York College; High School of Math, Science and Engineering at City College; Bronx High

School of Science; Staten Island Technical High School; High School for American Studies at Lehman College; Brooklyn Technical High School; Brooklyn Latin; and the Performing Arts School at LaGuardia High School, which requires auditioning rather than examinations. A quick scan of names reveals that there is at least one SHS in each borough.

The key issue is getting more teens of color interested and prepared to sit for the Specialized High School Admission Test (SHSAT). AdmissionsSquad, Inc. CEO Tai Abrams was the moderator of the SHS panel discussion. Ms. Abrams is herself a graduate of Bronx Science and earned her Bachelor’s in mathematics from Duke University.

Abrams sees the need to begin preparing for the exam in the 6th or 7th grades. “Families ought to keep their children one grade level ahead,” is Abrams advice. What it takes to get the students prepared is for their parents to allocate time to learn about the exam, obtain and, at least, thumb through the Specialized High School Handbook and have their teens take a diagnostic exam to see how they are currently scoring. The preparation and actual examination can be likened to what Olympic contenders faced recently. At first, the situation may have seemed insurmountable and one experiences failure. Yet, each practice develops a level competency until, similar to a snowboarder spinning in the air upside down, it is all second nature.

After being introduced on the auditorium stage, Tai Abrams began giving scholastic statistics. “In the 2016-17 school year, 52 students

of color attended Stuyvesant High School, 85 students of color attended Bronx Science and Brooklyn Technical High School. Altogether, 637 out of 1 million public school students attend Specialized High Schools. What is the preparation to get children ready for the high school entry exam?”

The conversation opened up to include Sam Adewumi, a Brooklyn Technical High School teacher and an administrator at CASPREP; Ivan Khan, CEO of KhansTutorial.com and graduate of Stuyvesant High School; Eugene Thomas, a student at Brooklyn Technical High School; and Venus Nnadi, also studying at Brooklyn Tech. The panel discussion focused on the experience of students of color at SHSs. Both Eugene Thomas and Venus Nnadi stressed the need to be heard. “Being the 1% within a school, it’s important to have your voice heard.” Ms. Nnadi raised the possible awkwardness of discussing such books as Huckleberry Finn. Both of these scholars are overachievers. Eugene Thomas completed 11 AP courses and has been accepted into Yale.

Ms. Abrams closed the panel by offering suggestions for promoting SHSs. Abrams believes using social media to promote going to the top high schools would be very effective as would presenting high school assemblies about SHSs as well as using churches and doctors’ offices as places to leave marketing material.

Mayor Urged to Provide NYCHA Tenants with Real-Time Capital Project Statuses

ast Friday Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams joined Council members Alicka Ampry-Samuel, Peter Koo and Ritchie Torres — the chairs of the Committees on Public Housing, Technology, Oversight and Investigations, respectively — in urging Mayor Bill de Blasio to provide the approximately 400,000 residents in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments with real-time capital budget information in the face of continued concerns around heating systems, lead and the state of good repair projects.

Specifically, they recommended a digital dashboard to include, but not be limited to, the provision of information as to project costs, status updates, as well as additional progress metrics such as completion timelines. An analysis conducted by Borough President Adams’ office found that while a capital project dashboard exists within the Office of the Mayor, NYCHA is not listed as one of the agencies monitored, and there is no similar dashboard specifically for NYCHA capital projects beyond a list of whether a reported issue is in progress of being addressed or if it has been resolved.

“For an agency that serves roughly populations larger than the cities of Cleveland, Ohio; St. Louis, Missouri and Tulsa, Oklahoma, it is imperative that we are arming residents with as much easily accessible data as possible as to the status of these important projects,” wrote Borough President Adams and his elected colleagues

in a letter to Mayor de Blasio. “We must empower our residents and tenants with information and view them as partners in improving living conditions across NYCHA complexes, in addition to seeking their guidance as to how to implement projects in their backyards.”

Borough President Adams first made the call for the creation of a publicly accessible NYCHA capital project dashboard at a rally earlier this month outside the Gowanus Houses Community Center in Gowanus, alongside dozens of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) tenants impacted by the heating crisis. The proposed initiative aligns with previous efforts from his administration to successfully secure dynamic maps and a dashboard to publicly track Build It Back and Superstorm Sandyrelated projects from the New York City Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency (ORR).

“We should utilize a ‘CompStat-esque’ model of tracking conditions and service delivery to restore confidence in NYCHA and improve the quality of life in our developments,” said Borough President Adams.

“In fact, I believe nearly every sector of our municipal government would be enhanced by a better utilization and activation of civic data through real-time monitoring, enhanced public accountability and dynamic agency response. My administration will continue to champion technological advances like these that improve the city’s ability to dig into the crevices of persistent challenges facing New Yorkers.”

Retired Assemblyman and City Councilman Al Vann gave yet another perspective of just how impactful of a man Dr. Pinn was. In some ways, mirroring what others before him had said, Al Vann stated, “It is incredible what one person can do in a lifetime,” in referring to his friend. He also recalled Dr. Pinn being a fearless man who was the go-to guy “when we had a confrontation with the cops,” and that “in Sam I saw no fear, a courageousness, it almost scared me…never before had I seen someone so without fear in such a moment of great peril.” Like the Honorable Annette Robinson, former Assemblyman Al Vann

Peggy Washington, a self-described niece of Pinn, sung a solo which she said was one of her uncle’s favorite songs, “The Wind Beneath my Wings.” Candace Pinn, Pinn’s daughter-in-law, spoke, reflecting on, among other things, how Pinn had “lived in the same house for 82 years.” Candace also reflected on Pinn being “super connected to his roots, a road dog, and the only child of his father.” She also spoke about his academic achievements, having been a recipient of the New York City public school educational system. For example, Pinn attended PS 70, JHS 35 and Erasmus Hall High School where he was a basketball star.

Dr. Pinn also received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Morgan State University, in addition to a Master’s in Social Work from Rutgers University. Candace also stated that her father-in-law had two Doctor of Law degrees. “Sam began his career in social services 60 years ago,” Candace recalled.

Moreover, Pinn was the “coordinator of the Bed-Stuy Mayor’s Activist Task Force and the co-founder of the Black United Front,” added Candace. In general, Dr. Pinn was “against mob and police violence against Black people,” Candace said.

“The question is, who controls our schools. As educators we should be responsible for the social, emotional and reputation am consequences of corporate invasion and activities in our public education.

“This is a win-win for the DOE and is a corporate investment. It is irresponsible behavior and a callous indifference for the D16 constituency.

“This is a set-up. There is a term always used by the Board of Education, ‘theft of services.’

“In addition to corporate greed, this is a financial win for the DOE. It is immoral, amoral and unethical on a humane and educational level.

“We see the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse of racism, prejudice, segregation and discrimination.

“In Black and Brown communities, there is a pattern of students and parents being displaced and dismantled from their own communities. The new distances that

students and parents must travel deter and discourage their total school involvement.

“The research shows that our high-performing students who are leaving this school may not necessarily be transferred to a better performing school.

“We have been blinded and bankrupt in our own humanity not to see the negative short- and long-range consequences for all the constituencies.

“We need to defeat this emotional and educational assault and violent act towards our students We need to stop pandering to the corporatocracy, charter schools and luxury real estate developers who have continually criminalized the poor. We do hold the DOE and the corporatocracy responsible for their egregious and irresponsible behavior.

“I am sure that none of you sitting there making these decisions and listening to us would have been where you are today had you been in a displaced and dismantled school scenario.”

I hope the DOE will listen to this outcry tonight by students, parents, teachers, responsible political leaders and others and stand to displace REBNY. Save our children and save all our public schools!”

Students’ Black History Month Silent March Speaks Volumes

T

he future looks bright and we can see the signs – which earlier this week were being carried by elementary school students demonstrating pride in their heritage and respect for the forebears who inspire them. During their Black History Month Silent March on Tuesday, students from P.S. 270 walked the streets surrounding their Clinton Hill school with signs featuring the faces and words of heroic and visionary Black people.

Principal Alyssa Roye met with the Student Council, comprised of four fifth-graders, to discuss how the school would celebrate Black History Month this year. Council Treasurer Craig Stevenson proposed the Silent March, feeling it would allow the Pre-K to Fifth-grade students to share the wisdom and accomplishments of their people in an impactful way. The march delivered on its promise with student-created posters.

It was moving, meaningful and powerful, and the children felt proud, not only of their history, but of themselves.

Black History in NY Schools: A Ship That Never Sailed ■■

ew York is one of several states, along with New Jersey, Illinois, Arkansas, Rhode Island, Florida and Mississippi, that mandates the teaching of Black History in schools – on paper at least. There is an Oversight Committee – the Amistad Commission – in New York, New Jersey and Illinois—that gives state authority to make sure that this happens.

But the NY Amistad Commission website appears to serve primarily as a news and events hub, with little else going on. It’s been said that the commission, sponsored

by Assemblyman Keith Wright and made law in 2006, has stalled for over a decade because authority was given, but not funding or other resources.

Fast-forward to 2018 and the lack of Black History education in our schools has

been made painfully apparent by recent events in the news. At Middle School 118 in the Bronx, white teacher Patricia Cummings recently instructed three Black students to lie on the floor, then reportedly (according to one of her students) stepped on their backs asking, “You see how it feels to be a slave?

How does it feel?” She was reassigned.

Malcolm Xavier Combs, a 17-year-old student at Christ the King High School in Queens, requested to have his name printed as “Malcolm X” on his senior sweater. But instead, he got a lecture from Assistant Principal Veronica Arbitello, who he says, told him that he “didn’t want to be associated with that name.”

At Intermediate School 224 in the Bronx, white Principal Patricia Catania took exception to teacher Mercedes LirianoClark’s lesson plans, telling her not to teach lessons about the Harlem Renaissance or

about Frederick Douglass. She also confiscated a poster about Lena Horne made by two students at the 95% Black school.

Then at P.S. 118, the Maurice Sendak School in Park Slope, a flyer for the school’s upcoming annual gala featured vintage photos of white men in blackface, encouraging parents to come out a have a grand time.

This, at a time when multiple students have reported being racially harassed at the school.

At a recent rally, Senator Jesse Hamilton and Assemblywoman Diana Richardson joined parents, teachers and students outside the Dr. Betty Shabazz School in Brownsville. The elected officials, along with the Rev. Kevin McCall of the National Action Network, are spearheading the Black History Class bill calling for yearround Black history education in the K-12 curriculum. The bill has thus far passed in

the State Senate but is presently stalled in the House.

“The Black History bill will create change and confidence in our youth by providing role models outside of sports and entertainment. I commend Senator Hamilton and Assemblywoman Richardson,” said McCall earlier.

Hamilton and Richardson were just as pointed at the rally.

“We will not allow Black history to be erased, to be denigrated or to be put to the sideline by ignorance,” said Hamilton.

“It’s important for our children to know that their history is greater than just slavery and it’s just greater than one month,” said Richardson.

New York State students and parents are seeking signs of long-overdue momentum on this issue. A resuscitation of the Amistad Commission may be the place to start.

A Life Well-Lived: Politicians and Community Members Gather to Honor Community Culture Keeper Dr. Sam Pinn ➔➔ Continued from page 8 having worked intimately with Pinn for many decades on several social activist and community upliftment efforts. He began his tribute with a popular rallying cry dating back decades ago, that he and Pinn utilized to mobilize community members to action.

The chant went like this: “We’re fired up,” and many audience members responded, “Ain’t going to take it no more.” After a while, even those who may not be familiar with the chant, caught on and consequently the entire room was fired up yet again all these years later. Rev. Daughtry reflected on Pinn’s work with the National Black United Front, in addition to his being an independent candidate for the state Senate.

Rev. Daughtry also spoke briefly about the moment in history that ignited some of Pinn’s activist work, namely the killing

of Randy Evans in November of 1970. In closing, Rev. Daughtry remembered getting news of his friend’s death and said, “If I had my way, every cruise, every school, every car would stop and revere Sam Pinn.” He added, “Some people never die, their memory lives on forever.”

The Honorable Letitia James, Public Advocate and community daughter to Annette Robinson, also gave remarks. She remembered Dr. Pinn being “a man of few words…sturdy, deliberate silence… did not have to fill up the air with empty words.” The Public Advocate also reflected on Dr. Pinn’s “quiet strength, steady gaze and warm smile,” and understanding that “the ties that bind us as a community must never be broken.” She also commented that “spirituality, religion, music and jazz” are all “central tenants in the life of

African-Americans.” It is for that reason that Public Advocate James stressed that the Fort Greene Community Council, “a place where you breathe life into Black people,” must remain open. She concluded in saying about Dr. Pinn, in essence, “His legacy must continue, and we children of dreamers must protect these institutions… and [protect] Central Brooklyn against the forces that threaten to destroy us.”

Dr. Pinn also served for 34 years as an esteemed Professor at Ramapo College in New Jersey. As a representative of the college who knew of Pinn’s work, stated, “An endowment will be created in Dr. Sam Pinn’s honor and legacy” at the institution where Dr. Pinn worked for decades. Others that spoke and reflected on the glorious life of Dr. Sam Pinn include Wynton Marsalis, Jr., who gave a statement

on behalf of his father, Wynton Marsalis, Sr. and NYS Regent Dr. Lester Young, Jr., who gave a statement on behalf of Dr. Adelaide Sanford. In addition to Pinn’s children and grandchildren, also present were Borough President Eric Adams, State Committeewoman Olanike Alabi, Judge Ellen Edwards, Job Marshariki, co-founder of Black Veterans for Social Justice, NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Roger Green, Councilwoman Inez Barron and Assemblyman Charles Barron, D.A. Eric Gonzalez and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries.

f you have not caught on by now, in the past boxing’s greatest fighters came from our great Borough of Brooklyn, New York. All-time greats who birthed the careers of great boxers such as Mark Breland, Riddick Bowe, Shannon Briggs, Paulie Malignaggi, Zab Judah and, of course, one of the greatest heavyweights of all-time “Iron” Mike Tyson. You also know what those boxers have in common?

They were all World Champions and were at the very top during their prime. It has been a while since those great boxers have been in the ring. However, there is another up-and-coming boxer who is ready to carry the Borough of Brooklyn on his back and leave his mark on the sport as well. His name is Sadam “World Kid” Ali. The 147-pound Ali, 24, has achieved much success early in his career thus far.

In 2008, Ali finished in second place in the Summer Games. He is also a former 2-time Golden Gloves champion. Since making his professional debut in 2009, Ali has posted an impressive win-loss record of 26 wins with only one defeat, with 14 victories coming by knockout. Ali’s biggest victory of date was recently when he shocked the world by defeating the Puerto Rican legend Miguel Cotto last year at Madison Square

Garden to capture Cotto’s WBO junior middleweight belt, his first championship as a pro. The fight was Cotto’s last fight and perhaps the “coming out party” for Ali, who is making a name for himself.

If Ali can continue this great success, he will be a part of the Mount Rushmore of great fighters to come out of Brooklyn. Ali’s next fight is expected to be another tough battle when he goes toe-to-toe with the gritty Liam Smith.

This will be another great test for the young Ali, who has proven that he can handle the bright lights that come along with a big fight. If all goes accordingly and Ali can pull off a victory, there have been a few household names thrown around that could be potential matchups for Ali. Names such as another legend in Manny Pacquiao, Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez and fellow Brooklyn Sadam “World Kid” Ali. boxer Daniel Jacobs.
