Terror Attack in NY Once again New York was a target of a terror attack. This time on the westside bikeway below West Houston Street. Eight were killed and many more injured with lives changed forever, by a man in a rented truck, bent on killing as many as possible.

And now Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller has made his first moves, with two indictments and a guilty plea to charges of lying to federal investigators from George Papadopoulos. What do you know about the NY constitutional convention vote?

I

t’s a question New Yorkers are asked every 20 years, and it could reshape state government.

On Nov. 7, voters will consider whether the state should hold a constitutional convention. It has been a half-century since the last convention was held.

The last time voters were asked the constitutional convention question was in 1997. By a nearly 650,000-vote margin, New Yorkers opted not to allow a convention to proceed.

What is it?

A constitutional convention would allow New Yorkers to propose amendments to the constitution. The constitution mandates that voters are asked every 20 years whether there should be a new convention held to consider amendments. The last convention was held in 1967.

If a majority votes yes, the constitutional convention will be held in 2019. If a majority votes no, a convention won’t be held and the question won’t be asked again until 2037.

How would it work?

If voters approve a constitutional convention, there would be a second vote in 2018 to select delegates. Each of New York’s 63 state Senate districts would elect three delegates.

Statewide voters would choose an additional 15 at-large delegates.

The delegates would receive compensation for their service. They would earn $79,500 — the same salaries paid to members of the state Legislature. They would also

have the authority to hire officers and staff for the convention.

The convention would be held in April 2019 at the Capitol in Albany. Any amendments adopted by a majority of delegates at the convention must receive final approval from voters. The statewide vote would be held at least six weeks after the conclusion of the convention.

Any amendments approved by voters would go into effect Jan. 1, 2020.

Who supports it?

One of the leading advocates for a constitutional convention is Bill Samuels, a longtime progressive activist and supporter of Democratic causes.

Samuels and other constitutional convention backers view the Nov. 7 vote as an opportunity to reform state government.

Voting no, Samuels said, “means giving up.”

Several New York interest groups support holding a constitutional convention. The list includes Citizens Union, a leading good government group, the League of Women Voters and the New York State Bar Association.

Some elected officials are on board, too.

Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick was featured in a video released last week by NY People’s Convention, a group created by Samuels to build support for the convention.

Myrick, a Democrat, called a constitutional convention “the best avenue for reform.”

There are Republicans who support a constitutional convention, too. Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb has been one of the most outspoken lawmakers about the need to hold a convention.

NY State Legislature “The beauty and necessity of a constitutional convention lies in its ability to reform the system and empower the people of New York to facilitate needed change,” Kolb, R-Canandaigua, wrote in February.

“Voter empowerment is a part of the very fabric of who we are as a nation. There is no more effective way to engage the public than a constitutional convention, and there is no place that needs it more than Albany.”

NY People’s Convention outlines at least a dozen issues that could be addressed a constitutional convention. The list includes strengthening public worker protections by preventing changes to employee pension contributions, an amendment giving equal

rights to women and the establishment of an environmental bill of rights.

The group proposes other changes which have been discussed for years. Electoral reform has been debated, but the state Legislature hasn’t updated the state’s voting procedures. NY People’s Convention proposes allowing early voting, same-day voter registration and automatic voter registration.

Ethics reform would be a high priority.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state legislative leaders have been reluctant to adopt major reforms. There have been small changes, but nothing that would dramatically reshape how state government operates.

Established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967, and named for its chair, Governor Otto Kerner of Illinois, the commission was charged with determining the root cause of the over 800 rebellions which took place in inner cities between 1963 and 1967.

Boys and Girls High School Complex: Three Options to Consider ■■

ighth-grade students hoping to attend a New York City public high school have until December 1st to submit their applications for round one of the process.

The high school directory of over 400 schools should help parents and their students navigate the choices. An online version is also available. Since early September, high schools have been conducting open houses to further facilitate the process. Several are still upcoming.

The Department of Education advises parents to make a list of 20 to 30 programs of interest. By the deadline, they must narrow down their choices to twelve in the order of their preference and submit the application no later than December 1st.

Sometime in March, students will receive a letter indicating the outcome of their application.

For two days in October, this writer was invited to the Boys and Girls High School complex to tour this “Miracle on Fulton Street” as Stanley Kinard, community liaison, likes to call it.

Daily, students pass the artistic reminder of the Middle Passage by sculpture Ed Wilson to get to one of the three separate schools housed in this building: Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice (“Mandela”), Tabari Zaid Bomani, Principal; High School for Research and Service (“Research”), Allison Farrington, Principal; and Boys and Girls High School(“BGHS”), Gretchen Harrison, Principal.

After the artwork outside the school, the

second wonder is the pristine physical plant itself: sturdy brick building with sparkling floors and walls, high ceilings, wide hallways, dedicated library and media center, athletic field and more. “This is prime real estate,” said Kinard. We took a walk to the state-of-the-art medical center on the first floor and the newly established Transitions and College Access Center with full-time staff available to the school and the community for housing, education and employment.

Bomani, The Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice has the solution: the principles of the Expanded Success Initiative*, research-based practices for bolstering their success.

According to the table, the students whose graduation is most in peril are Black and Latino males and females. The purpose of the Mandela School is to address the needs of the Black and Latino youth by developing a curricular approach that the research says works.

Bomani stated that one objective of his school is “to train students to address issues pertaining to social justice in a school environment which affirms their historical and cultural identity.” Inspired by the Trayvon Martin story, Nupol Kiazolu, a senior, does just that. She has brought a Black Lives Matter chapter to her school and travels to speak about social justice at universities across the country.

The school is also selective about staffing decisions. Second-year teacher Sahrif Keshk said, “If you don’t like kids, you’ll never be hired here.”

When asked why a parent should send a child to the Mandela School, Bomani said, “Where else can a child go and have his history and culture valued and incorporated into the curriculum?” *The Nelson Mandela School uses researched-based practices to provide rigor and supports needed for college and career success for African American and Latino young men.

For a variety of reasons, seventeen-year-old students can find they have only earned ten credits when they should have earned close to forty. To meet the needs of these overage, undercredited students, Allison Farrington developed the vision and plan for Research and Service. One of her

main thrusts seems to be to create a community where she knows every student, and every student knows her. She has set up her office in the middle of the hallway to make sure that happens.

On the day of my visit, Principal Farrington wore a judge’s robe. “I’m a judge in the Constitutional Convention of 1787,” she said and invited me to sit in on an American History class. The delegates/ students wearing robes and wigs drafted their notes on index cards in preparation for the debate. Under the watchful gaze of their two teachers, and three judges, history had come alive. Students represented their historical figures and spoke with courage presenting their positions on slavery, representation and the Bill of Rights.

Ms. Farrington’s school is not designed for incoming ninth-graders, but parents and students should know that such a school exists. One could only conjecture that if more students knew about this “miracle,” perhaps more students could find their way to Research and fewer would drop out.

The pressures of the street, a dysfunctional family, pregnancy, incarceration or homelessness interfered with Farrington’s students’ ability to succeed in their first high school. To ensure her school is the students’ last high school, Principal Farrington • provides dynamic teachers for engaging instruction • provides a dignified, state-of-the-art food pantry • connects with Good Shepherd Services for her students’ social, mental and academic needs • provides “aftercare” for two years after graduation.

The data shows that the majority of New York City high school graduates flounder in college. The programs implemented at Mandela and Research are designed to make sure their students are not reflected in that data. Tara Page, teacher of English and social justice at Mandela, says, “It’s about time we address our students’ social trauma.”

One may say the artwork at the entrance of the school building shows the entire school community recognizes that trauma.

Once inside, the teaching, relationships and school culture work to heal that trauma with the support of staff who are “friendly, funny and passionate,” according to Research transfer student Victoria Udechi (originally from High School for Teaching).

NY ELECTIONS Next Tuesday, November 7, is Election Day and it is necessary to “get out the vote”, especially the Black vote. Consider it a rehearsal for the 2018 elections. When voters stay home, you get a federal government like the one we have today, with the lowest popularity ratings ever!

New Yorkers will vote for NYC Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate, 51 City Council members, Borough Presidents, NYC Civil Court and NYS Supreme Court Judges.

The election outcome looks good for most Democratic incumbents.

THREE PROPOSALS ON THE BALLOT deserve your attention and vote.

Should there be a Constitutional Convention. Too many warring parties are against it. I recommend that voters read the VOTER GUIDE you received in the mail for arguments pro and con. Moreover, check online arguments about the Con-Con and form your own conclusion.

Amendment allowing partial or total forfeiture of pension for public figures who are convicted of a certain type of felony.

Amendment authorizing the use of Forest Preserve Land for Specified Purposes.

The last phase of the election season has not been that kind to Mayor de Blasio and Manhattan DA Cy Vance, whose reputations have been tainted by questionable donors. De Blasio is revisiting pay-to-play charges, which I never understand. Isn’t American politics based on pay-to-play? Look at the President, the Congress, the Governor, the NYS Assembly and Senate. What elected

official is beyond accessibility to a major donor.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS OUT OF AFRICA: The Niger story and the ambush death of 4 US soldiers begs more questions than it answers. Story reads like a thriller. Last week, news emerged about United States soldiers killing each other with Navy Seals allegedly killing a Green Beret in Mali in June. There are approximately 6000 US troops in Africa. Who knew?!

CARIBBEAN: Antigua and Barbuda, the Caribbean twin-island nation, celebrates its 36th Independence Anniversary from Great Britain on November 1.

What does special feel like?

O

n Sunday, more than 50,000 runners will take part in the TCS New York City Marathon. The marathon is a 26.2-mile race that stretches across all of the five boroughs. It is a premier event, like an unofficial holiday for the city, with hundreds of thousands of people lining the city streets to slap hands and cheer the runners on. No parade or gathering can quite compare to the energy of the city on Marathon Sunday.

Every year my mom would walk my sisters and I up the block, from our house on Greene Avenue, up one block to Lafayette Avenue, to watch the marathon runners go past. When we were younger, my sisters and I would climb under the tape and stick our hands out, smiling and winking at each other every time a runner slapped hands with us.

We’d stand out there for hours, watching and cheering for everybody from the elite runners down to those who the mileage had reduced to a brisk walk. I used to watch those runners with a keen eye, the perfect blend of agony and happiness across their faces, the determination in their stride and I’d wonder how? 26.2 miles seemed like an impossible journey when I was a kid. You mean to tell me that they start in Staten Island and run all the way to Central Park?

In one day?? Without stopping??? The idea was unfathomable. Surely, feats such as this were reserved for those designed by God for greatness. I didn’t know any regular folk running around my neighborhood in 40-degree weather wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Everyone isn’t doing this. No, to do this marathon thing you had to be special.

At least that was my perception of the race at 11 years old.

I started running in my late 20’s. I used to run on the treadmill for ten minutes before starting my workout, one mile a couple of times of week as a warm-up. I can remember being on the treadmill at the West Side YMCA, running that obligatory mile, imagining that I was running down Lafayette Avenue on Marathon Sunday. Even then, even before I understood running, how to run, how to prepare yourself to run, even when one measly treadmill mile felt like the most difficult thing to finish, my mind was already computing how to add another 25.2 to the equation.

I did my first organized race in 2009. It was the Bed-Stuy 10K, a race put together by Restoration right here in my neighborhood.

I remember going to get my number and T-shirt and realizing that other people I knew were running the race, too. That realization changed my perspective. These runners, the ones that invade our streets every November, wearing bibs and panting along the race route, they were regular people when they weren’t running. My friend Pat has run at least a dozen marathons. He works in education. My friend Rudy ran his first marathon last year. He’s a bartender. Marathoners aren’t some elite group of humans ordained

by God to run. They are regular folk who enjoy challenging themselves, setting lofty goals and smashing them. You aren’t special because you can finish a race. You’re special because you’ve made the decision to be better than you were, to utilize discipline and commitment in the pursuit of better. That is what is so special about running. That’s what I was seeing as an 11-year-old standing on Lafayette Avenue.

I am running in the TCS New York Marathon this Sunday. It is my first marathon, and the fruition of the dreams of that

little boy watching greatness from the curb.

The idea that I have become one of the runners that I used to watch still amazes me. I’m excited about the day. I can’t wait to experience this moment from the perspective of a participant. Our city is unlike any other on the planet. We have among us humans from 190 different countries, cultures that have meshed seamlessly with other cultures to form nuances that you can’t find anywhere else. We are a melting pot, and this Sunday I get to run through every neighborhood, to hear the cheers of every New Yorker, no matter what language they are cheering in. I’m going to be part of an experience that will motivate another young boy or girl to find their greatness, to challenge themselves to complete enormous tasks in their lives, only to realize that it wasn’t some guy running the marathon that was special, but it was they who were special the whole time. I’ll see you Sunday.

When the Maasai Come to Town

he culturally historical neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant got a taste of southern Kenya as the world-renowned Friends of Sironka Dance Troupe graced Bailey’s Café last Friday.

In conjunction with, and sponsored by the Bedford-Stuyvesant Museum of African Art, the troupe put on a performance that was

as memorable as it was entertaining, and entertaining it was. Consisting of men and women of the Maasai heritage, the Sironka Dance Troupe were decked in traditional Kenyan garb adorned with elaborate Kenyan beadwork. As all troupe members were noticeably wearing red, I would later learn that red is a color commonly worn by the Maasai.

The founder and leader of the Sironka Dance Troupe, Nicholas Sironka, started out

the program by providing the packed room with background information on both the troupe itself and the Kenyan tribe that they pride themselves in being a part of, Maasai.

As described by Nicholas, the Maasai are a prideful people who have stuck to traditional Kenyan values in the face of increasing attempts to “urbanize” Kenya. High-minded viewpoints like respect for elders, and arguably most important of them all, respect

For the Maasai, having respect for elders entails that you dress honorably when in the presence of elders, Nicholas explained. In that sense, having respect for elders goes beyond the usual talking and acting respectfully.

Saggy pants, a common “fashion” trend in the United States, would be frowned upon, particularly worn in the presence of elders, according to Maasai cultural norms. In an effort to not completely expose many deeply held American norms for the atrocious nature that they are, someone in the audience did manage to highlight that the sagging pants form of dress is also looked down upon here in the United States. The larger point of the matter is that much can be learned from the discipline and orderliness of the Maasai.

As the event progressed, cameras went up recording the wonder and sublimity that was the show put on by the Sironka Dance Troupe. Throughout the evening, guests continued to arrive to watch the troupe engagingly showcase traditional Maasai songs and dances. Every time I looked up, someone new had arrived. Among the songs and dances performed by the troupe, there was one in particular, a hymn and song, sung by Kenyan mothers to their young. I listened intently as this demonstration transpired while simultaneously recorded it on my videophone.

I understood the value and rarity of such a live performance of song and dance from the continent which my ancestors originated. The whole while I had in mind my future offspring and the ability that capturing such a moment on film would provide me to share with my future child thereby directly connecting him or her to our motherland. The demonstration was equal part-surreal and inspiring.

Other presentations required the help of the Maasai men such as when the group performed the “jumping” dance. The aptly titled “jumping” dance is meant to demonstrate the physical prowess of Maasai men. During the

dance, men, and in this case women, were literally jumping, two at a time in an effort to see who could jump the highest. The entire time, the audience was fully engaged as the Maasai would consistently seek out volunteers to dance and sing along even if those participating had little understanding as to exactly what it is they were saying. Everyone participating did, however, understand the universal language of kindness, love and community empowerment that was promoted by the dance troupe. In between each performance, Nicholas would give background on the tribe’s history and/or the significance of each ritual. Every word uttered by Nicholas was encouraging, reaffirming for everyone there the power and strength of all people.

Towards the end, a Maasai woman troupe member sung and hymned a tune that is commonly used to calm cows as they are being fed. Though such a concept may seem foreign to us Americans, for the Maasai this is normal as they are, by and large, cattle and goat herders. Before the performance began, Nicholas described how the orange milk holder used in the performance is found in the home of many Kenyans, including in his own, with the orange color specifically symbolizing hospitality. Over time, Nicholas explained, the orange gourd darkens and has a brownish orange hue as it is usually placed near the fireplace. This reinforces yet again the Maasai as a traditional group that has remained true to its cultural practices and norms.

The impact of the Sironka Dance Troupe was perhaps placed in perspective for me when at the very end, a local community member arrived and insisted that I take a picture of him with the Maasai. He was almost star-struck and even called his friend to brag that he was with, in his own words, “real” Maasai. The admirer, like Vira Lynn Jones, the Executive Director of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Museum of African Art, who was instrumental in securing visas for the group to travel to the United States, understands the significance and importance of the Maasai. His enthusiasm helped me to better appreciate Vira Lynn Jones’ prolonged battle in bringing the Sironka Dance Troupe to Bailey’s Café and to other prominent New York City venues. I understood more fully why Vira was so insistent on having the historic troupe perform amidst a hostile foreign policy climate espoused by the Trump Administration via their various travel bans.

It’s not that Nicholas and the Sironka Dance Troupe were not effective in conveying the importance of their performance. Rather, seeing the admirer, who happens to also be my father, react in that manner only served to increase my understanding of the mighty Maasai people.

So, even land costs in Africa are going up and opportunity lost. When I went to Africa, the first time I landed in Dar es Salaam I got to the hotel room and counted out my little $275 on the hotel bed and that was my startup capital. Today, I encourage people to think $50,000 as your start-up. You don’t need that money the day you land but certainly in the first 12 months to set something up, you’re talking about that level of investment.

So, we’ve had 30 great years, we’ve tried to show that it can easily be done. Like I said, a brother without a college degree and a couple of hundred dollars in capital for his trip, be struggling and juggling and bringing in money always. Over the continent, you will be known as being a non-Swahili speaker. So, you’ll be known that you’re not from Tanzania and the next thing people say is where are you from Zambia? Uganda?

South Africa? Once they find you’re from America, people call me Americani. You don’t get upset with these little titles. They call us a lot worse here. We have to know who we are, and we know where home is and that’s how we deal.

So, what we’ve come today to announce, discuss, plant the seed of an idea is we - our family has allocated 756 acres of land and we are in the process of designing a project where in 3 African-American individuals or families come and reside on housing that we will build on that land and manage a model and demonstration farm, growing a variety of agricultural crops. Then processing those crops at the village level into finished product. So instead of selling corn in the kernel, we will take the dried kernel, process it into flour and sell it by the 5 kilo, 10 kilo, 50-kilo bag both in Tanzania and outside.

40% of our vegetables, tomatoes rot after harvest because we can’t get them to market quick enough. We don’t process them. And now with jarring, which my grandmother did, she had a whole wall full of jarred vegetables, to sundrying, to the making of tomato sauce and spiced sauces, is what we will do with the vegetables.

We will be planting, harvesting, processing, marketing and selling the finished products. Not just of that 75 acres but all of our co-op families. Several hundred families who have extra corn or other crops. Once we find a crop that works then we can begin.

Those people who plant a quarter-acre of tomatoes now, if there’s a market in the village they can easily go 4 times that to an acre, 8 times that to 2 acres, because we have created a processing mechanism to make it more profitable and to avoid spoilage.

We have begun to outline this initiative on paper. This is the first time I’m back in the United States to speak on it and I’m really here to sell coffee and see family but our relationship with Segun goes back deep and this is a great group of family to discuss with initially to get some feedback.

We had the opportunity to speak with noted historian William Loren Katz, author of “Black Indians”, about the Trump Administration’s understanding of history.

William Loren Katz: History has Lessons for Today Next in Line ■■

s I reported in last week’s story, the New York Yankees had an amazing season. A season in which many did not see them winning much, let alone come one win short of their first World Series appearance since they won it all back in 2009. The manager that led them to that World Series Championship was former Yankee player Joe Girardi. Last week, the Yankees decided that after 10 seasons with the ball club that Girardi will not return to the team. In the 10 seasons as Yankee skipper, Girardi had a win-loss regular season record of 910-710. As far as his wins margin goes, it puts him sixth on the all-time Yankees list behind Joe McCarthy (1,460), Joe Torre (1,173), Casey Stengel (1,149), Miller Huggins (1,067) and Ralph Houk (944).

The Yankees as a franchise changed managers 20 times from 1973, the same year George Steinbrenner bought the team.

Since their rise back in 1995, when former manager Buck Showalter was replaced

by Joe Torre, the team has only changed managers twice in the last 22 years. Many people, including myself, believe the Yankees made a mistake letting Girardi walk.

Only time will tell.

So, moving on, the question now is who will replace Girardi in the most prestigious managerial job available? Here are some of my personal potential favorites.

First is current Yankees first base coach Tony Pena. Pena has served as the team’s first base coach the last 2 seasons and does have managerial experience having managed the Kansas City Royals in the early 2000s. Second on my list will be Al Pedrique. Pedrique has been a manager all over the Yankees farm system since 2013.

Although he did not have a successful stint managing the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004, Pedrique’s biggest advantage to land the job is that he has managed a lot of the young stars who are currently on the Yankees roster. The last coach on my list is Rob Thompson. Thompson, 54, has spent 28 years in the Yankees organization, the last 10 as a coach. Most recently, he has been the team’s bench coach ever since Girardi took over as the manager back in 2008. Although Thompson does not have any managerial experience, he is known as an excellent communicator and favorite in the clubhouse.

General Manager Brian Cashman has not put a deadline in which a new manager is expected to be announced. Whoever the manager will be, will be taking over a team with a lot of potential and can contend in the American League as well as a championship for years to come. The team has the second-best minor league system in baseball, not to mention the potential of current players such as Luis Severino, Didi Gregorious, Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge getting better. I know that Halloween just passed, but to think those guys can get better after the numbers they put up this past season is spooky.

Our Time Press: What do you think of the comments of White House Chief of Staff, General John Kelly saying things like General Robert E. Lee was “an honorable man” who “gave up his country to fight for his state”. And then there was, “The lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War. And men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience has to make their stand”.

William Loren Katz: Where to begin? What you have with the Trump Administration is that it is not only running with what they call “alternative facts”, but a kind of mangled history and you don’t know what’s going to come out of them next.

There’s a refusal in the general’s remarks to realize that the Civil War was about slavery and slavery is an unmitigated evil, particularly in the United States where it was extremely harsh. Every time I hear things coming out of this administration I am amazed by their lack of knowledge and willingness to display that lack of knowledge.

OTP: Given your study of the relationship between the Africans and the indigenous people, are there any lessons we can apply now to the Trump Administration?

WLK: There is a basic lesson that comes out in my Black Indian presentation, which is a PowerPoint because I have dozens and dozens of historical pictures that tell the story as well as my narrating it; it’s an example of the “resistance” working. The United States was the largest military power in North and South America, and yet it was not really able to defeat this alliance that grew up between African-Americans and Native Americans.

Particularly in Florida where the Florida Seminoles, which were a combination of escaped African slaves and the escaped indigenous people who were also enslaved, plus others, and they fought the United States Army, Navy and Marines to a standstill for 42 years. Finally, many agreed to migrate to

Sacajawea, a brilliant Shoshone woman, carrying her newly-born boy, and York, a tall, muscular, fast-thinking enslaved man, worked together to make the famous 44-member Lewis and Clark Expedition the success Jefferson hoped for. the West to the Indian territory in Oklahoma, but others claim they never gave up and are still there as proud people with their own ways.

One of the things I like about the lecture is that it shows that people can reach across the flaming lines of race to unite. And by the way, the Seminoles also took in white people. They didn’t care about the color you were, they cared if you were going to contribute to the community and if you were willing to shoulder arms to fight for freedom.

That’s the way it should be and that’s the way our revolution succeeded here in the United States.

Now a resistance has formed and people are trying to strategize and devise tactics to make a hasty exit of this administration by voting them out or whatever else they can devise legally.

OTP: Will we always have Trump’s 38%

base among us?

WLK: I think there will always be a bigoted population that I hope is not as large as 38%. I’ve been told by Dr. Gerald Horne that if it goes below 30%, Trump is in real danger.

The sad thing is that so many people who voted for him are not racist themselves, but they tolerated his racism. Which is what I find most frightening.

ultural Caravan Productions, Inc. has launched their fall season of special education programs for the entire family with events including lectures and keynotes by revered scholars including Professor William Loren Katz; Dr. Patricia Newton (Nana Dr. Akosua Akyaa), practicing psychologist; and Dr. Umar Johnson, certified psychologist, it was announced last weekend by Louise Dente, founder/producer/host of the acclaimed “Cultural Caravan”, now in its 11th year.

“We believe that an educated community is one which is informed and able to make sound decisions about its future,” says Ms. Dente. “In this effort, we seek to create community-based programming geared towards fostering a greater awareness of the

cultural contributions of people of African ancestry to our world.”

Ms. Dente’s “Cultural Caravan” has been building bridges of communication for more than 10 years and is currently attracting diverse, new audiences through her community-based programming geared to fostering greater awareness of the cultural contributions of people of African ancestry to our world.

Ms. Dente herself, is a bridge to scholarship for the community. In response to a request from Native Americans and others in the New York area, Ms. Dente asked her friend Professor William Loren Katz, author, “Black Indians: A Hidden Heritage”, to speak on November 18th at the Queens Central Library, 2:30pm-4:30pm, in celebration of Native American Heritage Month. Katz will

Arvelia Myers, Tennis Pioneer, Dies at 91

rvelia Myers, tennis coach, humanitarian, motivator, pioneer and activist who introduced hundreds of youth to the game of tennis in Harlem and beyond, enriching and broadening their lives, died on Wednesday, October 25, 2017.

A graduate of Columbia University, Coach Myers was honored with induction into the

United States Tennis Association Eastern Section Hall of Fame. Founder of Pyramid Tennis and co-founder of A-Z Tennis, she was a life member of the American Tennis Association and of the United States Tennis Association.

Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

“If you want reform, you have to vote for the constitutional convention,” Samuels said. “A yes vote is a vote to empower the people of New York to take the power from Cuomo and Heastie and Flanagan and really fix our state, make it a proud model for the rest of the nation.”

Who’s against it?

“Politics makes strange bedfellows.”

That famous saying best describes the large coalition of interest groups, labor unions and political parties that are urging New Yorkers to vote no on Nov. 7.

The state Conservative Party and Working Families Party are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but both oppose holding a constitutional convention.

Groups on opposing sides of the abortion debate also support a no vote.

Mike Long, chairman of the state Conservative Party, said he opposes holding a constitutional convention because of the

cost. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli has estimated that it will cost $50 million to hold a convention. Critics of the convention believe the cost could exceed $100 million.

“I just think it’s a waste of taxpayers’ money,” Long said. “I think it will become a boondoggle.”

For others, the delegate selection process is cause for concern. If a majority of New Yorkers support calling a constitutional convention, delegates will be elected in 2018. There will be three delegates from each of the state’s 63 Senate districts and 15 at-large delegates from throughout the state.

Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said the delegate election is “rigged.”

“Our state Senate districts have been drawn based on extreme partisan political gerrymandering and racial gerrymandering which makes the process not one that is likely to have delegates that reflect the will of the people,” she said.

Some organizations oppose the constitutional convention because it would open up the document to extensive changes.

Lieberman said there are issues the New York Civil Liberties Union would like to address, but she doesn’t believe renegotiating the entire constitution is the right approach.

Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, agrees.

“A wholesale rewriting leaves the process open to just amazing abuses,” he said.

King, like Lieberman, also worries

about how delegates would be selected and what that would mean for gun rights in New York. He believes the delegates would reflect the makeup of the state Legislature.

“It’s going to be controlled by downstate liberals and they do not represent the people of upstate New York,” he said.

Labor groups oppose the constitutional convention for a variety of reasons. At the top of the list: They fear a constitutional convention could put public employee pensions at risk.

Samuels dismissed this claim as a “joke.” He said pension protections in the state constitution were added at the 1938 convention.

Andrew Pallotta, president of New York State United Teachers, said in September that while collective bargaining rights are a concern, labor unions also believe it would be costly to hold a convention.

“It’s very expensive. It could be hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said. “The state could spend that much more wisely.”

How to vote The constitutional convention question — “Shall there be a convention to revise the Constitution and amend the same?” — will appear on the back of paper ballots.

There are two bubbles: one for yes and another for no. There have been social media posts claiming that if you don’t choose either option that it counts as a yes vote.

That’s false. If you don’t take a position on either option, you won’t have a vote registered for that question.

And there are cynics who say, that Trump never criticizes Vladimir Putin, because Putin’s got something on him, like pictures of the “salacious details” in the “Steele Dossier” prepared as opposition research during the presidential campaign.

But of course that’s crazy talk mixed with wishful thinking. No one could be so vain that they would deliberately harm the nation with discord and death, destroying the future for generations rather than be deeply embarrassed. I can’t imagine that.

The key to answering these questions is lodged in the definition of White Racism, which the world has been struggling to define and which should always be written as The White Race System.

What is this thing called Race? And what is a Race system?

The word Race is a religious metaphor for a species having ties to either the bloodline of Adam or to the bloodline of Jesus.

Keeping in mind that the word “system”, not “Race”, is the operative word, a Race system is a man-made procedural tool for making a species which nature has not made and cannot make!

What is a White Race System, and what does it do to Caucasians that it does not do to nonwhites?

While young men of color go wild over being met by unyielding forces of mistreatment and injustices designed to punish them for “breathing while human”, young white men go mad over being subjected to wombto-tomb, pressure-cooker forces aimed at their intrabody de-structuring, disallowing them access to their species identity!

The rebellions of young men of color have been aimed at white symbols; the rampages of young white men have been aimed at people!

Let us not equate injustices, policies and mistreatments aimed at the oppression of nonwhite people, with experiential processes and procedures aimed at the intrabody mutilation and re-pression of white people.

And let us not be misguided in our understanding by assuming that the function of the word “white” is to identify the architect and perpetrator of the White Race System. On the contrary, the function of the word “white” is to specify the by-product: an Immaculate Adam.

The White Race System is a procedural formula hatched in the monastery and embellished by the white church and the state to angelize Adam.

Such an Adam cannot be created without violence to the prototype group: the Caucasian. The function of the procedural tool is to affect the Caucasian’s complete species overhaul: to hack into his intrabody unity; to overthrow that unity; to dichotomize him along an invisible and imaginary line of demarcation separating soul from flesh; to orchestrate the relationship between his soul and his flesh; to cloister off his white soul and protect it from defilement at all times; to block his unfolding as a human; to deroot him from the Ground of Being; to subvert his manhood; to eradicate his species memory; to assign him a species identity not given him by nature; to subject him to endless cycles of purging and cleansing so as to rid him of “the Human Stain”, or of what Edmund Spencer, in his book, The Faerie Queen, calls “the filthy blot of sin”.

Mutilated, ossified, set apart from his species herd, is it any wonder the white man, young and old, goes on rampages? To kill everyone “breathing while human”!? With every bullet he can lay his hands on! In the hope that one of them may strike the Dr. Frankenstein who fashioned him!

If the white church will not apologize to Her “New Adam”, he will be unable to seek forgiveness for the countless millions of people, white and nonwhite, whose blood he has spilled in Her name!

Driver/Guards Wanted Armored Car Company is seeking Driver/Guards for our New York daily operations. We are a well diverse company with business all over the Tri-State. We are looking for dedicated individuals to join our team. We are a 24 hour operation, which includes extended hours, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities include: driving an armored vehicle, guarding, delivering and picking up shipments.

Qualifications: Must be at least 21 years of age and able to lift at least 50 pounds. Able to obtain a valid City Of New York Carry Permit for a handgun. Must have a valid State of New York driver’s license at least Class D. The 47-hour armed guard course certificate is a plus. A home Premise Permit is a plus. Previous armed driver/ messenger or related driving experience is a plus.
