t this point I think we know the country is in dire straits, and Donald Trump has set the nation on this dangerous course. He speaks only for his hardcore supporters cheering at rallies, confirming what they knew to be true all along: that being white is supreme. And, also confirming they are threatened by nonwhites and he uses that to stoking them with fear of black and brown people and of the Democrats who he has called “treasonous” and a “mob.”

He has congratulated congressman James Forte, “He’s my kind of guy!,” who body-slammed a reporter for asking a question. As we go to press, explosive devices meant to assassinate, have been sent to the homes and offices of former President Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, former Attorney General Eric Holder, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, CNN, former CIA chief John Brennan, and financier George Soros, at last count.

Of course, Trump is a delusional tyrant

and a self-proclaimed nationalist. However, a lot of people fervently believe him and love him for what he is, a white nationalist. And being heavy Republican Primary voters, they have been gerrymandered into like-minded districts. And that, combined with massive and flagrant voter suppression, have given them control of all three branches of government, with a racist demagogue in charge.

It is the tyranny of the minority and no good will ever come of this.

However, if the Democrats regain control of at least the House of Representatives, Trump’s tax returns will be exposed, and multiple investigations will haunt his cabinet, his family and himself. And that’s before impeachment. And hopefully this will hold him at bay until the 2020 election.

The Democrats need Brooklyn, but they also need Brooklyn to call home to Georgia, Florida, wherever your People are. Send a text. Put it on Facebook. Make a meme.

Make voting go viral. This is not a test. This is for all that we are.

Trump’s Explosive Language Has Explosive Results

uthorities have intercepted several suspicious packages that were sent to left-leaning, centrist or Democratic political figures as well as two media outlets on Wednesday, prompting nationwide alarm in a divisive political climate that some say is the reason for the threats.

Crude pipe bombs were addressed to the home addresses of former president Barack Obama, and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The U.S. Secret Service said the devices were discovered during normal mail screening and never reached them.

“The packages were immediately identified during routine mail screening procedures as potential explosive devices and were appropriately handled as such,” the Secret Service said in a Wednesday statement.

By TheGrio However, similar devices were sent to offices of former attorney general Eric Holder, and Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, along with a San Diego building that housed offices of Sen. Kamala Harris and the San Diego Union-Tribune. A Maryland Congressional mail screening outlet also intercepted a device which was addressed to California Rep. Maxine Waters, according to Los Angeles’ KABC. In addition, a live pipe bomb a long with an unknown white powder was discovered at the CNN Center in New York, causing the building to be evacuated. Disenfranchising felons One of the most impactful suppression tactics is a legacy of Jim Crow: barring felons from voting, even after their sentences are complete, as happens in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia—all former Confederate states. As a result, in those states, more than 7 percent of the total voting-age population is disenfranchised because of criminal convictions. (The other states in the South allow felons to vote after completing their sentences, in addition to any probation or parole.)

Today, 6.1 million Americans are denied the right to vote because of current or past felony sentences.

There is ample historical evidence that this policy was racist from the start. In 1896, the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that the limitations on voting were intended “to obstruct the exercise of suffrage by the negro race.” And yet, it remains legal.

Kentucky (26 percent), Tennessee (21 percent), and Virginia (22 percent)—due to policies of mass incarceration, crime rates in communities struggling under economic and racial oppression, inequality of opportunity. No wonder it’s called the “New Jim Crow.”

Florida is now the test case for felon voting. In Florida, felons can only get their voting rights back if they personally petition the state.

After his predecessors of both parties expedited the process of restoring voting rights, Republican Gov. Rick Scott (now running for U.S. Senate) implemented an arbitrary, mandatory five-year waiting period for those who have completed felony sentences to be able to vote again. This arbitrary rule was upheld in court last April.

“Had early voting not been eliminated, Trump’s victory margin in North Carolina would’ve been just one-fifth of what it was.”

Consider the numbers once again. As a result of the law and Scott’s extension of it, 1.5 million Florida voters are barred from the polls. Florida’s population is 21 million; its turnout rate in nonpresidential elections is around 50 percent. And since the current polls in the Florida gubernatorial election have Democrat Andrew Gillum leading Republican Ron DeSantis by 3 percentage points, that means the margin between them is approximately 300,000 votes.

In other words, the number of disenfranchised voters is five times the current margin in the race.

Moreover, Florida’s policy hits black Americans twice as hard as white folks: In 2016, felon disenfranchisement excluded more than 10 percent of the voting-age population overall, but more than 20 percent of black Americans.

This fall, Florida has a constitutional amendment on the books that would do away with the petition process, and automatically restore voting rights once felons have completed their sentences. A recent poll indicates that 71 percent of Florida voters support the measure.

That is good news for democracy.

Granted, to many people, barring felons from voting makes some degree of sense. But why? If you think about it, committing a crime doesn’t mean you’re no longer a citizen—you still have to pay taxes, for example. And crimes ought to be punished by the sentences imposed by juries and judges, not disenfranchisement rules put into place by racist state legislatures in the 19th-century post-Confederacy. Black Women: The Voice of Influence in Midterm Elections

Black women “motivate and galvanize the communities that they touch,” said Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

ith the midterm elections two weeks away, it’s clear that a historically overlooked voting block — Black women — who are more politically engaged than any other demographic — will make all the difference for Democratic candidates.

“Alabama was this tipping point around Black women’s leadership,” said Glynda Carr, co-founder of Higher Heights for America, which focuses on galvanizing voters.

After 98 percent of Black women voted for Doug Jones and drove an upset Senate win in Alabama in December, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said that Black women are the backbone of the Party.

But the political activism didn’t end there.

In preparation for the midterm elections, many Black women have been involved in a nationwide push for voting mobilized by the rejection of President Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric. For example, Trump called Black NFL players kneeling during the national anthem “sons of b**ches.”

The call is to squash retro-racism evident at deadly events such as the Unite the Right rally led by white nationalists last year in Charlottesville. Trump said there were “fine people on, on both sides.”

The push to get people to vote is also over concerns regarding major issues such as health care and education.

Women in Alabama, like DeJuana Thompson, a Birmingham native, launched WokeVote, in an effort to galvanize Black millennials.

In Mississippi, dozens of women met on the campus of Jackson State University in September to strategize how to utilize the energy of Black female voters.

“All of us who are in the room right now are midwives for transformation,” Rukia Lumumba, daughter of the late Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, and co-founder of the Electoral Justice Project, told the Clarion Ledger.

The gathering was part of a stop on a tour

across the Deep South organized by LaTosha Brown, co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund.

Brown also initiated a bus trip for about 40 Black senior citizens last week in Georgia to take them to vote. But county administrator Adam Brett heard about the bus ride and stopped the trip.

In Georgia, Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp are in a tight gubernatorial race. Kemp also happens to be the Secretary of State, and Abrams is calling for him to resign for abusing his power to prevent Blacks from voting.

If elected, Abrams would make history as the first Black female governor in the country.

Black women who are supporting Abrams do so because they believe in her platform and planned policies.

She doesn’t take their support for granted.

“We are leveraging the enthusiasm and support of the African-American women’s community to motivate and galvanize the communities that they touch — and that means every community in the state of Georgia,” Abrams told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

As with historic gubernatorial races, including Ben Jealous as the Democratic candidate in Maryland, and Andrew Gillum in Florida, the Democratic Party is in need of Black women to both vote and encourage others to vote. Their influence is needed in congressional races to keep Senate seats and win the House.

Democrats need to flip 23 GOP-controlled seats to seize control of the House.

“In 45 Congressional districts, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is spending what it described as a record midterm sum of $25 million specifically earmarked for nonwhite voters,” according to The New York Times.

Officials said that Black women are a major target of focus groups, advertising, and customized social media posts and text messages.

Mandating voter ID For many people, carrying photo identification is no big deal. I show my ID all the time: to get into the office, to board a plane, to get into a bar.

But that is just not true for everyone. In fact, 3 million Americans lack photo IDs, and because the most common photo ID is a driver’s license, the people least likely to have them are less affluent people in urban areas— disproportionately people of color. That’s why, for the last 40 years, polling places have matched signatures rather than photographs, enabling people to vote without an ID. But following President Obama’s two victories in 2008 and 2012, that began to change. Fifteen states enacted voter-ID laws, again with the false claim that voter fraud was a runaway problem.

In 2016, such laws were struck down by courts in Texas, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. But many other laws persist. And, the Commission on Civil Rights report found, “strict voter-ID laws typically produce the greatest burden for African-American and Latino-American

communities” and “correlate with an increased turnout gap between white and minority citizens.”

This week, the Supreme Court allowed North Dakota’s onerous voter-ID law to remain on the books and enforced for the 2018 election cycle. That law requires specific forms of ID and proof of residence, both of which many Native Americans lack. In particular, many Native Americans do not have traditional residential street addresses, meaning they simply cannot comply with the new law.)

USA/MIDTERMS Cannot remember an American midterm election season like this one; hopefully, the year that will turn things around.

The Republican Party controls the Congress, the White House and the US Supreme Court, but does very little for the American majority, the 98%.

Two years into the administration of Donald Trump, the nation can boast a 15% tax cut which benefits America’s superwealthy and corporations, a slow derailment of Obamacare, a blind eye to gun control despite school massacres, polluting the environment which reacts with severe flooding, hurricanes, indiscriminate tornadoes and algae defiling waterways from coast to coast. This midterm season is one of voter suppression, designed to exclude Blacks, Latinos, Asian-Americans and Native Americans. The GOP is masterful in playing the race card and going along with abominations against nonwhite people in this nation like separating immigrant children from their parents at US border towns.

Recently, President Trump warned that Middle Easterners were among the Central American immigrant caravan en route to the USA. The rule of law no longer exists and the country seems like it’s wide awake in a nightmarish dream.

There is only one party to help us escape this dystopian wilderness aka America.

Democrats, get ready for a major 11/6 victory.

BUSINESS MATTERS Don Peebles, Founder/Chair/CEO of the Peebles Corporation, is America’s largest Black real estate developer, which has completed more than $5 billion in development across the US since 1983.

Peebles has a plan to address the nation’s affordable housing crisis with the Don Peebles Opportunity Zones Program, a rider to the 2017 federal tax reform bill, according to a Real Estate Weekly cover story. His plan involves creating a Qualified Opportunity Fund to invest in low-income areas nationwide through a federal initiative which offers tax relief in exchange for investments in designated Opportunity Zones. Peebles says, “These zones exist because they have not been serviced by the private sector, so hopefully this results in smaller entrepreneurs having access to capital.” Peebles continues, “NY has more than 500 census tracts approved for the program, some of which are in Brooklyn’s Brownsville and East NY. Peebles, of course, wants to explore Opportunity Zones in cities that are his company’s core markets

ho is his speech writer? Back in the 90’s in the realm of Hip-Hop journalism, the written word was so magnified across the industry that what a journalist wrote could very well cause him to be assaulted in the street. It wasn’t uncommon for some of your favorite 90’s rappers to be waiting outside of a rap magazine’s office waiting for a specific writer to come out of the building so that he could be checked on the words he wrote.

I am a child of that era.

So, who is Trump’s speech writer? Because, obviously, he thinks that he can just plug in nuanced racist cues into this idiot’s speeches to ignite and empower a certain sector of America.

That’s what’s happening, you know. This administration has, since day one, has used subtle cues to ignite white nationalism, giving the cowards that prefer to hide their dirt under white sheets the courage to be bold with their ignorance, to wear it like a Nazi armband, hoping that just the sight of it will intimidate you into subordinance. So, who is this fool’s speech writer? Because if anybody needs to be tuned up, laid upon with hands and feet, and abundantly chinchecked, it’s him.

You know that if you’ve ever watched a movie with a wizard or a witch, they cast their spells by saying them aloud. Abracadabra! Open Sesame!

Likewise, the writers who are employed by this administration are casting spells of racial division by appealing to the character flaws in our nation. Prejudice. Classism.

Fear. Superiority. Paranoia. Nationalism.

All of the best white supremacists have used these pillars of inequality to drive the energy of their followers into a frenzy, leading to all kinds of despicable acts against mankind. Hitler did it. Bull Connor did it.

And now, Trump does it.

It’s easy for Trump to apologize for the words he speaks at these Fourth Reich rallies. He doesn’t write them. I want to hear an apology from the speech writer because he knows exactly what he’s doing.

When, in fact, according to the store’s surveillance video, his backpack, unbeknownst to the child, “accidently” brushed up against her. The boy is traumatized and confused, he begins to cry. His mother, who is with him, is outraged, probably because as a Black mother she knows the possible tragic outcomes of such calls. “Cornerstone Caroline” claims that she is “not a racist.”

Before I gave better attention to healthy nutrition options, I often engaged in that NYC dietary ritual of ordering a “Bodega breakfast.” And so, when I read that this incident took place in a Bodega (a small NYC neighborhood grocery/takeout food store), I was reminded of how cramped Bodega spaces are, and that even without a large backpack you could easily accidently bump into a fellow customer.

I have come to accept in the age of Trump that the: “You are a racist!”; “No, I am not a racist!” conversation is a waste of time. I suspect that Black voter suppression officials in places like Alabama and Georgia (where the chief Black vote suppressor is actually running for governor!) know and don’t care that their philosophical ancestors are the racist segregationist and civil rights deniers who beat now-Georgia Congressman John Lewis bloody as he attempted to secure voting, civil and human rights for Black Americans.

Racism is what racism does.

And so, it is also with our white privileged police caller whose reporting practice is not a new phenomenon and is only being fully exposed now because of the power of social media. In fact, this act of white folks calling (their) law enforcement agents on Black folks actually has its historical roots in a pre-Civil War period when every white citizen was unofficially

deputized to report and help capture any escaped Black slave.

Our “I am not a racist” police caller is totally unaware of these historical roots of her behavior as well as being disconnected from an awareness of her own taken-for-granted entitled existence. Perhaps if she were racially sensitive and informed she would know that once the police arrived, and depending on their approach, and how the young man, his parents and the Black neighbors who gathered to comfort the grieving boy acted, this event could have taken a very bad, and maybe even deadly, turn for the worse.

But lest we forget, following this incident, the traumatized young man will walk into some school. He will sit in a classroom with other students, who if they look like him could bring their own personal set of serious worries and problems not covered by the news media, into the classroom. These children will be asked to “act normal” when there is absolutely nothing “normal” about growing up Black in America.

Like many young Black men and women growing up in Brooklyn, I vividly remember those moments, some traumatizing, when my “otherness” was painfully revealed to me.

The blissfully safe childhood unawareness of constant danger is stripped from you. All of the “kid stuff” you can no longer do, the kid you can no longer be. It’s an unimaginable terrible feeling, having your childhood essentially stolen from you prematurely, with no hope of ever reclaiming it. In early adolescence, I truly became a man-child; fully aware of the pain and limitations of my Blackness, and yet not being mature enough to have the necessary adult defense mechanisms to cope with it. The fear and shame that Black people, including your natural protectors, your parents, really can’t protect you from American racism. All of this is what that young man will bring to school and he will be asked to “act normal.”

Many Americans (including many Black Americans) have been bamboozled and tricked into buying fake best-selling books, theories and expensive consultants that suggest that Black children “underperform academically” because they lack “grit.”

After spending 11 years as a Title 1 high school principal with a majority Black and Latino student population, there are, in my view, no other young people in our schools who better display and model “grit!” For I was amazed every day that many of them even showed up for school, knowing what those students had to go through outside of school.

As a principal, I stood at the entrance door every day to greet students, welcome and thank them for coming to school that day. Many of my students lived under very difficult situations: foster care, group homes and grandparents subbing for parents. I hugged many of them because I knew they longed for the hug of one or both of their incarcerated/missing parents, particularly a father. Some of them were parents themselves or, despite being teenagers, they were, in reality, the only functioning or available adult in the house, and so their day started intensely early getting their younger siblings fed, dressed and to school. I thanked the students because I knew their individual stories, and I was thankful that they pushed through a difficult evening and morning, and despite it all, made a commitment to come to school that day.

What I never publicly revealed was that part of my “greeting at the door” exercise was my own silent spiritual ritual, and it was dedicated to thanking God for my students’ safe survival and arrival from their time out of the school building. I felt I could keep them safe inside of the school, but as far as them traveling to and from school, for the things taking place in their neighborhoods and homes, I was powerless, and so I sought

the help of a higher power. I know from my experience as a superintendent of a city school district, that what I am describing here may appear to many Americans like a terrible fictional story. After all, it does not remotely sound anything like their childhood, the experiences of their own children, or the children of family members, their friends and neighbors.

But every day, millions of young people in this nation arrive to our schools with serious life matters weighing on their minds and hearts; these sociological-psychological mental backpacks full of troubling thoughts have nothing to do with their academic studies or school activities. “Am I going to live long enough to graduate?”--- “My parents are not ‘citizens,’ will they come home this evening and will I (born in the US) be able to go to college?”--- “Are we going to eat tonight?”--- “I don’t have clean clothes for tomorrow!”--- “How can I avoid negative encounters with young criminal elements who look like me, or some police officers who could without reason, and because of what I look like, see me as a criminal element?”--“Why does my being and acting smart create a social and safety problem for me?” The schools that serve these young people betray their educational mission if the school pretends that the thoughts these children think, and the lives they live outside of school, is anything near normal.

Channeling Outrage into Action on Behalf of Homeowners

s Mayor Bill de Blasio doubles-down in his defense of HPD’s (Housing, Preservation and Development’s) Third Party Transfer (TPT) program, Rev. W. Taharka Robinson will not relinquish ground in the fight against it.

The mayor’s stance rated a higher level of attention recently as the City added co-op apartments to TPT’s aggressive oversight responsibilities (some say “land-grab”). But Robinson’s immediate concern is calling on political forces and people resources on behalf of homeowners whose properties are being taken.

Through his Urban Political Association, founded in 2012, Robinson will urge City Council members to end or suspend TPT. He is energetically on this case, as are people like James Caldwell, president of the 77th Precinct Community Council, (who first alerted Robinson to the issue), and Stephen Witt, founder and publisher of the Kings County Politics website (and former Our Time Press staff writer). They’re outraged by stories like that of Maureen Saunders,

whose family home was seized, without notification, on bogus charges of tax delinquency and disrepair. It could have been sold to developers without her knowledge.

Robinson, son of former Council Member Annette Robinson, has had the community activism drive for some time. He founded the Brooklyn Anti-Violence Coalition in 2007, addressing murders, domestic violence, rape, gun violence and gang activity in the community. “You look at the elements that create violence and try to deal around that.

We tried to encompass every circumstance, from fiscal to professional, to community perspective, to create a stabilized, grounded community.”

Now Robinson is organizing a demonstration outside the office of Council Member Ben Kallos, who in 2015 introduced the aggressive expansion of TPT, allowing illegal seizure and sale of private homes.

“Demonstrators will be there to tell

Kallos he made a mistake,” said Robinson.

“He can put in an amendment to this legislation he submitted three years ago.”

Robinson will also organize demonstrations outside the offices of councilmembers who voted for the bill.

“And we have to call upon the Chair of the New York City Council’s Housing and Buildings Committee, and he’s from our own community, Councilman Robert E. Cornegy Jr. He can put things in place to help us bring this together.” .“When this legislation was passed there were no rules – nothing put in place to protect homeowners. So, you have circumstances such as with Maureen Saunders, whose property was part of a cluster sale. What is a cluster sale? Now, you’re a tenant, not the owner. We’re talking about people who have been hard-working for 30, 40 years, living in their homes and then you tell them they have no place to go. You have a $2-million-dollar piece of property and you’re gonna take it for $30 or $40 thousand dollars?! That’s absurd, and it’s unconscionable! And many of these

There’s a four-month window during which people can get their properties back.”

Who Should Apply?

Eliminating early voting America is one of the few democracies where Election Day takes place on a workday, which makes it very hard for parents who have to juggle work and childcare to vote. That, in itself, is a kind of voter suppression.

To compensate, most states have implemented early voting, opening the polls days before Election Day to enable people to vote. After 2008 and 2012, that trend was reversed. In North Carolina, for example, the Republican-controlled legislature and Republican governor eliminated early voting days in 2013, even though in 2012, 900,000 voters cast their ballots during the early-voting window.

Why? Take a look at the numbers. In 2012, 48 percent of North Carolina’s early voters were registered Democrats and 32 percent were registered Republicans; that means that 140,000 more early-voters were Democrats. In 2012, Mitt Romney won the state by 92,004 votes; in 2016, Donald Trump won by just 173,315 votes.

In other words, had early voting not been eliminated, Trump’s victory margin would’ve been just one-fifth of what it was. It would practically have been a tie—and that’s not counting North Carolina’s other voter-suppression efforts.

Another example is Florida, where Gov. Scott rolled back early voting at university campuses, where voters tend to be younger and more liberal.

This policy was halted in July by a federal judge, who noted that 830,000 students were enrolled at state colleges and universities. Even so, three Florida ➔➔ Continued on page 8

y now, we should all be up to speed regarding one of the greatest boxing stories probably ever, when we talk about Brownsville, Brooklyn native Daniel Jacobs. A man who has overcome the odds and has been through so much.

In 2011 during a USO in Iraq, Jacobs’ life would change forever.

It was there where he began to feel sharp pain in his legs. The pain grew worse upon his return to the United States; so bad that it left the fighter unable to walk.

Soon after, doctors diagnosed Jacobs with Osteosarcoma, which is a rare form of bone cancer. The cancer had wrapped itself around his spine which ultimately left him partially paralyzed. He then underwent a series of radiation treatments and underwent a surgical procedure to remove the tumor.

Nearly 2 years later, Jacobs made his long-awaited return to the ring, where he picked up where he left off by dominating. His desire to one day become a world champion fueled his fire to get back in the ring. In 2013, doctors informed Jacobs he was indeed cancer-free!

It was there when he acquired the nickname of “Miracle Man.” Jacobs continued to cruise by fighters and finally won his first world title in the summer of 2014, knocking down Jarrod Fletcher. The bout took place in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn making it an even sweeter homecoming. Jacobs would go on to have two more fights, one in which he scored his biggest victory to date when he squared off against another unbeaten Brooklyn rival Peter Quillin. It took Jacobs 85 seconds as he made quick work of Quillin. After a tough 2017 bout with Gennady Golovkin (lost by decision), Jacobs followed up his impressive performance with Golovkin with two more wins against then-unbeaten fighters by decision.

So, what’s next for the “Miracle Man?” A Saturday night meeting with Ukrainian Champion Sergiy Derevyanchenkoon. The bout will take place at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. The two fighters know each other quite well as both fighters share the same trainer and have had numerous sparring encounters. Lying about voter fraud Now, these five voter-suppression policies don’t even include some of the most insidious disenfranchisement practices happening today: extreme gerrymanders that benefit one party over another, or redistricting efforts that “crack” minority communities into multiple districts or “pack” them all into one, diluting their power. These practices, both of which have recently been allowed to proceed by the conservative-led Supreme Court, arguably weaken the power of minority voters more than voter-suppression campaigns do.

But voter suppression is unique in that it directly blocks voters from voting. It is a direct affront to their citizenship. And it is all based on a lie: that voter fraud is a crisis.

In fact, there simply is no voter-fraud crisis. An exhaustive study by a Loyola law professor found that between 2000 and 2014, there were all of 31 reported instances of in-person voter impersonation. Out of more than a billion votes cast. In other words, the odds are 1 in 32 million that a vote is fraudulent—certainly not enough to swing any election. And by way of comparison, you are 237 times more likely to be struck by lightning.

In the fact-free universe of Fox News, Sinclair, Breitbart, the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal, and the rest, it doesn’t

matter that there is no voter-fraud crisis. They’ll just make one up. Remember, the president of the United States has alleged, without a scintilla of evidence, that between 3 and 5 million people voted illegally, a claim that every expert in the field has said is implausible to the point of absurdity.

As a result, three-quarters of Republicans said that voter fraud happens “somewhat” or “very often,” including 68 percent of Republicans said that millions of illegal immigrants had voted in 2016. Both completely, unequivocally false.

Likewise, one would think that the career of Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a Republican, would be harmed by his humiliating, devastating losses on the “voter fraud” issue. First, Kobach lost in federal court, when it was found that his anti-fraud crusades, which suspended 36,000 Kansas voters (once again, disproportionately people of color), was totally unjustified. (It found exactly three cases of possible fraud, all of which were mistakes, in which senior citizens voted in two states by accident.) And if that weren’t enough, Kobach was humiliated again on the national stage, when the voter-fraud commission he chaired folded without finding a single case of fraud.

And yet, Kobach is now running for governor of Kansas, and might just win.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that this year there are efforts to turn back the tide. Dale Ho, director of the ACLU Voting Rights Project, told The Daily Beast that “there are more pro-voter ballot initiatives

gonna be a war. It’s gonna be an exciting war.” Despite his relationship with the fellow boxer, Jacobs has given no indication that it would get in the way of him living the miracle and capturing another world title.

Ultimately, the Republican voter-suppression scam is just about math. There are too many black and brown people in the country for the Republican Party to retain power with a narrow base of white support. If there weren’t systemic voter suppression, the states of Texas, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia would likely be Democrat-led today or in the very near future. So what choice do Republicans have but to forestall the inevitable and prevent people of color from voting for as long as they can?

As Ho put it, “the techniques of voter suppression change, but the constant is a continuing push by elected officials whose power is threatened by demographic shifts in the voting populace to try to curate the electorate and boost their chances of retaining power.”

Republican strategist Paul Weyrich said it best in 1980, when he stood beside Ronald Reagan at an evangelical gathering. “I don’t want everyone to vote,” he said then. “Elections are not won by a majority of the people… As a matter of fact, our leverage in the election quite candidly goes up as the voting population goes down. We have no responsibility, moral or otherwise, to turn out our opposition. It’s important to turn out those who are with us.”
