US Virgin Islands: The American citizens battered by hurricane Maria – and forgotten Most of the 100,000 citizens here have no drinkable water or power, but the territory has been overlooked in the storm’s aftermath

I

f Irma hit like a right hook, then Maria was the sucker punch, battering the islanders while they were already down. Almost a month after the first of two deadly hurricanes collided with the US Virgin Islands, the recovery is still in its infancy.

More than half of the roof of St Thomas’s commercial airport no longer exists, replaced with sky blue tarps that ripple in the breeze. All the territory’s schools remain closed, with hopes to reopen on Tuesday.

Around 90% of the territory is without power and the vast majority of the population are still without potable water.

While the plight of neighbouring Puerto Rico, hit hard by Maria over two weeks ago, has prompted a national outcry in the face of a slow federal recovery effort, the continuing crisis on the US Virgin Islands, home to 100,000 US citizens, has received less focus.

But on Friday vice-president Mike Pence flew into the American territory’s second island of St Croix, where Maria hit the hardest. He vowed that the administration “will be with you every day until the US Virgin Islands comes all the way back”.

The territory’s governor, Kenneth Mapp, a registered Republican who ran as an independent, backed the sentiment. “There is no country that responds to disasters like the United States of America,” he said.

Things are slowly improving after the devastation of its strongest hurricane on record, but much of the island is still isolated without power and water.

When Maria arrived a week later, with the roof already damaged, the hospital was flooded once again. The water has not fully receded and a few inches cover the floor of the cancer center, where Irma’s winds destroyed the facility’s only MRI scanner.

Working to Rewrite the Narrative: the CUNY Black Male Initiative Conference ■■

ast Friday, more than 1,000 students, faculty, administrators and parents from communities throughout the tristate area convened on Bedford Avenue at Medgar Evers College for the 12th Annual CUNY Black Male Initiative Conference. The conference is a CUNY-wide initiative intended to enrich and support the educational success of males from underrepresented groups, particularly African-American, Caribbean and Latino males. The initiative was created in 2004 as a method to offset the evident pattern of ongoing discrimination that many underserved Black men in New York City face, particularly in the arenas of education, criminal justice and employment.

The BMI and the need to speak to issues of disparity in relationship to young Black males was echoed by President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper Initiative”, which was launched in 2014.

The theme of this year’s BMI Conference was Rewriting the Narrative.

The panel discussions throughout the day focused on five key topics: media, advocacy, economics, policy and incarceration. All of the discussions and programming targeted the processes and methods of dispelling stereotypes and negative imagery associated with men of color. The conference had not one but two keynote speakers. The morning keynote lecture was given by Dr. Bryant Marks, Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Morehouse College Male Initiative. The afternoon keynote lecture

was given by Mychal Denzel Smith, a writer for the Nation magazine.

Black men of all ages were on hand to learn and to educate one another. For many of the younger students it was their first time hearing about certain concepts or being included in certain conversations. Former Hip-Hop Minister Conrad Tillard moderated a media panel discussing the importance of being a creator of social media content and not just a user. He stressed the need for Black men to maintain a solid online reputation and presence, and working to change the online perception of Black men as thugs and deviants. Erika Pearson, a Management Consultant for Ernst and Young, moderated a panel about finances. This was probably the most interactive panel of the day as students were prompted to speak about their economic goals while panelists offered them insight on how to reach those goals. Asking questions was demanded of the crowd throughout every panel, turning instructional sessions into town hall-style discussions. During breaks in between panels, many attendees got a chance to catch some of the panelists and even the keynote speakers in the hallway to further discuss the myriad of concepts presented throughout the day. On a break, I got a chance to speak to Dr. Marks about the theme of the conference and its significance. “The theme this year is around narrative change. What is the story we tell ourselves about Black and Latino males?

For most Americans, that story is negative. So, what we want to do is to challenge that and say okay, what is the story? How did it form?

How accurate is it? And finally, how do we change it?”

Black Male Initiative Conference, keynote speaker Mychal Smith spoke frankly about the perceived need to attach an inordinate level of urgency to such an event. “It’s never not important. I’m often bothered by the language of the now more than ever talk, or because things are more present in our minds or more pushed to the forefront via media and headlines that these issues haven’t always existed, or that these issues were less important before.

It’s always important. It’s always important to be doing this kind of work where you are coming together in the community to think critically. And I think that more than anything else we can do that in the community together.

And that’s what BMI is fostering.”

The students are the focal point of the conference and the information and resources presented to them will enhance not only their educational experience but will serve as support as they move into the various fields of employment. A group of young men from Union County College in Cranford, New Jersey came to the conference to be a part

of the discussions and they were more than satisfied about the information they received.

Terrell Germany, 18, said he enjoyed the panel on finance. “I learned about finance, how to budget your life, you know? Being so young and having a job, you want to start now by establishing a good ground base of finance.

You want to have a surplus. When you’re older, you don’t want to be in debt.” Terrell’s classmate, Amir Malcolm, 18, agreed. “We have to educate ourselves. A lot of times in our communities financial literacy isn’t taught to us. So, it is our responsibility to go out and to seek that literacy and that knowledge.”

As I left the conference, I found myself walking behind a group of young men, and those young men were discussing some of the things they learned at the conference. If the goal of the Black Male Initiative is to introduce concepts and ideals to young Black men with the hopes of enhancing their educational experiences and to prepare them for life, then this conference certainly succeeded in that mission.

USA WEEK IN REVIEW The State of the Union: Just when you thought that you heard it all, Republican US Senator Bob Corker said last week, “I think that Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos,” meaning Trump, POTUS 45. Corker continued saying that he feared that Trump was steering the nation on the path to WWIII. Corker is the lone GOP messenger who confirmed White

culture has a problem with Black women, white women and racism in its ads. The latest Dove racist ad emerged last week in the digital world. It opens with a Black woman who morphs into a lighter woman who morphs into a white woman. Hence, the Black woman goes from dirty black who cleanses herself to whiteness. Dove soap items are Unilever products. In 2011, there was a Dove ad with three women standing next to each other. This is not the first time.

A 2011 Dove ad with three women, each standing side to side with the Black woman on the far left with alleged bad skin. The second woman is lighter and the third one is the lightest who boasts smooth skin. The ad copy next to woman #3 read, “Visibly more beautiful skin”.

The Dove marketing formula is traveling from Black and dirty to white and clean. Perhaps it is time to boycott the Unilever product brands which are legion.

Remove the following brands from your shopping carts: Hellman’s, Lipton, Knorr, Vaseline, Breyers. Dove needs to hire some Black people to improve their race sensitivities.

To be sure, there will be a runoff unless one of the candidates scores 50% of the votes. Sirleaf shifts support from one candidate to another. It is rumored that she will relocate to Kenya and transfer some of her key assets there after the election.

A Harlem resident, a retired lawyer, centenarian Brewster’s eyes no longer work but his hands deftly play classical piano daily. His memories of the Tuskegee Airmen, his war days in England are graphic and lucid. The Tuskegee Airmen, US military personnel, were exceptional African-American aviators and one of the most respected fighter groups during WWII. They paved the way for the full integration of the US military.

Reginald Brewster RIP: Virgo Hardware founder Altiman Armstrong, 88, has died. The Jamaican-born handyman with multiple skill sets, relocated to Harlem in the 1970s and opened Virgo Hardware on Lenox at 129th Street where he stocked hardware items and provided locksmith, plumbing and masonry services.

Armstrong moved VIRGO, his zodiac sign, to 188 Lenox Avenue in the 80s, where it is one of Central Harlem’s oldest Black-owned businesses.

Brooklyn Millennials Franchesca Ramsey and Opal Tometi On Subway Posters Speaking Out on Poverty in Brooklyn

Ramsey, a former “Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” contributor, will make history as the first Black woman to host a show on Comedy Central during the 2017-2018 television season. Already she’s a popular video blogger with over 29 million views on YouTube and the host of the hilarious MTV Web series “Decoded”, which tackles race, gender and pop culture. But, to the former Florida resident, gentrification in Brooklyn is serious business.

“When gentrification occurs people try to look on it as a positive thing. They say the neighborhood is getting better. It’s getting nicer--without realizing that the downside of it is that a lot of people living in the community end up getting pushed out,” said Ramsey. “How can we do it in a way that partners with the people that have always been there so they can also reap the benefits of a cleaner street or a safer neighborhood and without losing the people that have raised their families there and started their businesses there? The way to make our communities better is to make sure it’s better for everybody, not just one small section.”

“The way to address poverty I believe we need a radical investment in our communities, particularly in low income and poor communities all across the Borough of Brooklyn,” said Tometi. “That can look like investing in a quality education system, affordable housing, jobs programs and transportation for folks that can’t afford it.”

President Trump’s 2018 Budget Proposal Reduces Federal Funding for Coverage of Children in Medicaid and CHIP

edicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are key sources of coverage for children, covering nearly four in ten children (39%) nationwide1 and 44% of children with special health care needs. Medicaid covered over 37 million children in FY2016.2 CHIP serves as an important complement to Medicaid. In FY2016, it covered about 9 million children in families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but often lack access to affordable private coverage.3 States provide CHIP by creating a separate CHIP program, expanding Medicaid, or adopting a combination approach. All states have expanded eligibility for children through Medicaid and CHIP (Figure 1). New legislative authority is needed to continue CHIP funding beyond September 2017. If Congress does not extend CHIP funding, it is estimated that all states will exhaust their federal CHIP funds during FY2018.4 President Trump’s FY2018 proposed budget includes fundamental changes to Medicaid that would transition federal financing to a block grant or per capita cap for children and other groups, with reductions in federal funding of $610 billion. These changes are in addition to eliminating enhanced federal funding for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion to low-income adults. While the budget does not include many details, the provisions in the American Health Care Act (AHCA) would allow states to impose a block grant or per capita cap for children in Medicaid with requirements to cover mandatory children (under 100% of the federal poverty level (FPL) for school age children and under 133% FPL for children ages 0-5).

QUEENS COURSE SATURDAYS Medicaid/CHIP Program faces big cuts in Republican budget.

Under the block grant option, states could cap enrollment or impose waiting lists for children above minimum levels and would not be required to provide comprehensive benefits.

The proposed budget also would reduce federal funding under CHIP and cap the eligibility level for which states could receive federal funding for children’s coverage at 250% FPL. The budget proposes to extend CHIP funding for two years through FY2019.

However, it proposes several changes to CHIP. It would eliminate the 23 percentage point increase in the federal match that was provided to states under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would reduce funding for states. It also would cap the eligibility level for which states could receive federal CHIP matching funds at 250% FPL. In addition, it would eliminate the maintenance of effort requirement that the ACA established to protect existing coverage gains for children.

This provision requires states to keep Medicaid and CHIP eligibility levels at least as high as those they had in place at the time the ACA was enacted through September 30, 2019. Lastly, it would allow states to move children ages 6 to 18 with incomes between 100% and 133% FPL who were transitioned from CHIP to Medicaid under the ACA back to CHIP. These changes would result in net saving in CHIP of $5.8 billion over ten years.

Under the proposed budget, about half

of states would lose federal matching funds for children due to the 250% FPL eligibility cap on federal matching funds, which would likely lead them to reduce eligibility for children. As of January 2017, 24 states, including DC, have Medicaid/CHIP income eligibility limits above 250% FPL, including 19 states that cover children at or above 300% FPL. These states would lose access to federal matching funds for coverage of children with incomes above 250% FPL under the proposed changes, which would increase state costs and likely lead to states reducing eligibility for children.

In addition, states could further reduce children’s eligibility to the minimum levels (100% FPL for children ages 6 to 18 and 133% FPL for children ages 0-5) since the maintenance of effort provision would no longer apply.

Together, the proposed changes to Medicaid and CHIP would result in significant reductions in federal financing for children’s coverage. In response to these reductions, states will likely need to make program cutbacks, including reductions in eligibility and benefits. Such reductions would likely reverse the recent progress achieved in making affordable coverage available to working families and reducing the children’s uninsured rate to a record low of 5%. Coverage losses among children would lead to reduced access to care and other long-term negative effects for children and increase financial pressure on states and providers.

harlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan, 54, who was known to play a little roundball in his heyday, is stepping up his philanthropy game by donating $7 million to launch medical clinics for poor communities in Charlotte, N.C. “Through my years of working with Novant Health, I have been impressed with their approach and their commitment to the community,” said Jordan, a North Carolina native, in a release on Monday, the Associated Press reports. “It is my hope that these clinics will help provide a brighter and healthier future for the children and families they serve.”

“This gift will transform the lives of thousands of families and children living in poverty-stricken communities,” Carl Armato, president and CEO of Novant Health, told AP. “We are thankful to Michael for his generosity. The gift will remove barriers to high-quality health care in some of the most vulnerable communities.”

Randall Woodfin, Mayor-Elect: 5th Black Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama

ersonal interest in the recent mayoral election in Birmingham, Alabama could be attributed to three connections. It is the city of my birth.

I am an African-American woman who experienced firsthand segregation. My interest in history commands notice of change. As a historian, my vision extends beyond current events to the preceding journey. Therefore, while witnessing the 2017 mayoral race in Birmingham, Alabama, my vision sights how Randall Woodfin has become the fifth Black mayor of that city.

The thirty-six-year-old challenger, Randall Woodfin, unseated the sixty-eightyear-old mayor, William Bell on October 3, 2017 in a nonpartisan runoff election. His defeat was a 58 percent vote lead over Bell’s 41 percent. Woodfin, a Birmingham native, served as a Democratic board member and a city prosecutor. Labeled as a progressive candidate, he has been publically supported by local and national populists and liberals such as Bernie Sanders. Many attribute the national interest in Woodfin as a part of the Democratic campaign to support local and state candidates who will strengthen their position for the 2020 presidential election.

Birmingham, as Alabama’s largest city, sets a precedent for the current Democratic climate. After announcing his candidacy a year ago, he charged that Mayor Bell “hasn’t done enough” for residents living beyond downtown, whom he said “deserve better”.

His opponent touted his accomplishments towards achieving his goal of changing the city’s “Bombingham image” locally, nationally and globally – asking for more time to finish the job. One could ponder how

their platforms translated to votes and what the outcome of this election means for the citizens who voted.

Some may observe this election simply as “more of the same”. Were Randall’s predecessors simply a continuation of the status quo…merely the putting of a Black face on the same inefficiencies and petty corruption in government …a failure in resolving the pressing needs of the people...getting rich, fat and sassy while the rest of the people of Birmingham, not so much? While others may regard this as a positive “passing of the torch” from those of my generation to my children’s…a young, untainted, progressive, liberal…ready to unseat the status quo?

While these lenses are valid, the historical prism begs for background information on the political path leading to this nationally publicized election. Woodfin will be the youngest mayor of the state’s premier city since David Fox (white) in 1893, also in office at age 36. As the fifth Black mayor of the “first city”, the historical prismatic perspective may provide clarification for some and distortion for others. Hopefully, the facts will shed enough light to afford a truthful transparency.

Woodfin’s four mayoral predecessors were incumbent William Bell (2010-2017), Larry Langford (2007-2009), Bernard Kincaid (1999-2007), and its first Black mayor, Richard Arrington (1971-1999). I served as a volunteer during Arrington’s campaign in two capacities. My dear friend, the late Gussie Harris, phoned me with a call to action for the unannounced candidate.

Randall Woodfin, new mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. votes. They needed someone to feed hundreds of volunteers on a zero budget every weekend throughout the election. Accepting the challenge, the drive for a continuous supply of loaves and fishes was solicited within the Black community. As a member of Jack and Jill, I was asked to coordinate members as ushers for the inauguration and hostesses for the mayoral victory reception.

The significance of the grass-roots campaign is that Randall Woodfin used the same successful method to mobilize his voter base ushering him to victory. His strategy role model, Richard Arrington, Jr. (1934- ), was inaugurated in 1980 in the city that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once referred to as “the most segregated city in America”, going on to be reelected to five terms. Time will tell if Woodfin will be as popular for successful reelection.

History begs to ask, “Upon whose shoulders did he stand to rise to such heights?”

Before mayor, he was a member of the City Council. However, attorney Arthur D. Shores (1904-1966) was the first Black to serve from 1968-1977. And as for mayor, before Arrington was elected in 1971, he was inspired by the first Black mayor of a major U.S. city in 1967, Carl Stokes of Cleveland, Ohio. But wait, hold onto your seats because many Black men were elected to public office after the Civil War during Reconstruction. Pierre Caliste Landry of Donaldville, Louisiana was the first AfricanAmerican elected mayor of a U.S. town in 1868.

The immediate impacts of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 must be recognized for the political doors opened by Woodfin’s predecessors. However, the cheers of America’s civil rights activists ring backwards to 1619 from the shores of Africa when resistance to slavery began and continued through the now-almost-four-hundred-year-old campaign for equality. The movement for human equality by Americans of African descent has maintained a presence and an insistence throughout the history of this great country.

The hope is that all elected officials and especially those of African heritage will carry the legacy of progress for all constituents and in so doing, will improve the plight of Blacks for the short-term current events and the long-term historical perspective.

“I love my island,” said Francis. “I was born and raised here. So no matter what we go through here, I will never feel like like leaving,” She turned back towards the rubble and continued clearing it, piece by piece.

he public is invited to a street co-naming for Dr. Joan Maynard, the founding executive director of Weeksville Heritage Center, this Saturday, October 14 starting at 1:00pm at 158 Buffalo Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. (Between Bergen Street & St. Marks Avenue) Joan Cooper was born in Brooklyn in 1928. Her father, John Cooper, a ventriloquist, and mother Julia (née St. Bernard) told her stories about the oppression of Blacks; she recalled them discussing a newspaper story about the lynching of a pregnant Black woman.

She attended Bishop McDonnell Me­ morial High School. Upon graduation, she received a scholarship to the Art Career School in Manhattan. Joan was also a Revson Fellow at Columbia University and received an honorary doctorate from the Bank Street College of Education. She graduated from Empire State College of the State University of New York and worked as a commercial artist, including as an art director for McGraw-Hill.

She drew covers for Crisis, the publication of the NAACP, among many others.

In 1968, as Pratt Institute historian James Hurley began to hunt down Weeksville’s forgotten location, Maynard became a founding member of the Weeksville Society and served as president from 1972 until 1974, when she became executive director. Due to her efforts, Weeksville was given “landmark status” by New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

She raised funds for restoration efforts, taking slides to scores of schools and community groups to win support. She pieced

together financing from governments, corporations and children collecting pennies. She donated all her personal savings. Decades of her hard work were rewarded in June 2005 when the houses of Weeksville were opened to the public after a $3 million renovation. At that time, the society changed its name to the Weeksville Heritage Center.

Maynard’s oft-stated mission was nurturing a sense of identity and history among Black children. She said in an interview with the New York Times in 1991, “The kids have to learn they’re not trash”.

Among the many awards she received was the Louise DuPont Crowninshield Award from the National Trust for Historic

Preservation, of which she had been a trustee.

She retired in 1999, but continued to promote Weeksville.

Maynard was married twice, once to a man named Bacchus and once to one named Maynard, and divorced twice. Her son, Jerome, died before her, and she left no immediate survivors.

My Mother in Me: MaryLouise Patterson on Louise Alone Thompson Patterson

nown as Weez, Squeeza, Lou or Louise - she was just Mom to me until I reached somewhere around 10 when she became Louise to me also; that is, when I became more fully aware of who else she was besides just being my mother.

Since I was big enough to run she’d taken me to demonstrations, usually with my father or to meetings with or without him or to the Communist Party headquarters where I’d watch her write a leaflet with a lit cigarette in a nearby ashtray, then type the leaflet, then run off hundreds of mimeographed copies, fold them all, stick them in envelopes, seal and stamp them and make sure it all got to the post office. Then she’d pull together the committee, plan the meeting, discuss and chose the speakers; she’d write the speech she’d give later, get the place, get the refreshments and decorations, make sure the out-of-town speakers had places to stay, often at our house, and afterwards cook a fabulous meal which fueled hours of stimulating table talk, debate and laughter.

I learned many of those tasks at her side and didn’t realize until I had to do some of them how hard they actually were. One of the best lessons I learned from her was the value of “menial” work and to respect those who were relegated to doing it their entire lives.

She stood tall, although she was only 5 feet. She was an impeccable smart dresser thanks to being a keen-eyed bargain shopper plus she recognized the importance given to appearance – especially if one was Black and in “the movement”; she had a generous spirit that took a struggling Black male teenager,

MaryLouise Patterson Bojack, who delivered groceries from our neighborhood supermarket and guided him over several years to the point where he was off to college. That same spirit brought the actress Beah Richards to live with us after encouraging her to come to New York. Beah stayed with us for many years, becoming a cherished “family member”.

I remember the wonderful parties she threw, bringing all manner of people together for a good time, her and my father playing cards or scrabble with me every weekend, her teaching me to love the arts and culture, her genuine understanding and love of people, especially Black people and her deep intense hatred of any kind of oppression which was the fountain from which flowed the life she dedicated to the noble freedom struggle that Black people forever valiantly waged.

I realize now how much I subconsciously patterned my own life after my mother and how indebted to her I am for the life I’ve made. I’m sure my love for children comes from her. Because of it, I became a general pediatrician.

Because of it, I always try to show compassion, with a gentle touch and tender voice and remind my African-American patients how beautiful they are, especially the girls – which invariably brings out a smile.

I encourage them to study medicine and to read and stretch their little minds and unleash their dreams.

Because of it, I went to Attica prison; after the rebellion there, to examine a young inmate who’d been shot in the back by the State Police and was paralyzed and had been denied parole. As a result of my examination, he was released. Because of it, I went to Mississippi to examine a young paper mill worker who had lost a hand in a mill machine. My review of the medical records allowed his lawyers to file suit for a sizeable financial compensation, which he won.

How proud I am to be the daughter of my parents and hope they are as proud of me as I am of them.

Louise Alone Thompson Patterson (1905-1999) was an esteemed Civil and Human Rights advocate during the Harlem Renaissance era and close friend of Langston Hughes, who dedicated his “Shakespeare in Harlem" to her.

If they did, they may want to move the current statue to a museum and replace it with a symbol of the Indigenous People at the newly-named Indigenous People's Circle.

The Real Deal with Christopher Columbus

oward Zinn: Let me make a confession. I knew very little about Columbus until about twelve years ago when I began writing my book, “A People’s History of the United States”. I had a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University—that is, I had the proper training of a historian, and what I knew about Columbus was pretty much what I had learned in elementary school.

But when I began to write my “People’s History”, I decided I must learn about Columbus. I had already concluded that I did not want to write just another overview of American history—I knew my point of view would be different. I was going to write about the United States from the point of view of those people who had been largely neglected in the history books: the indigenous Americans, the Black slaves, the women, the working people, whether native or immigrant.

And so, how must I tell the story of Columbus? I concluded, I must see him through the eyes of the people who were here when he arrived, the people he called “Indians” because he thought he was in Asia.

Well, they left no memoirs, no histories.

Their culture was an oral culture, not a written one. Besides, they had been wiped out in a few decades after Columbus’ arrival. So I was compelled to turn to the next best thing: the Spaniards who were on the scene at the time. First, Columbus himself. He had kept a journal.

His journal was revealing. He described the people who greeted him when he landed in the Bahamas—they were Arawak Indians, sometimes called Tainos—and told how they waded out into the sea to greet him and his men who must have looked and sounded like people from another world and brought them gifts of various kinds. He described them as peaceable, gentle, and said: “They do not bear arms, and do not know them for I showed them a sword—they took it by the edge and cut themselves.”

Throughout his journal, over the next months, Columbus spoke of the Native Americans with what seemed like admiring awe: “They are the best people in the world, and above all, the gentlest—without knowledge of what is evil—nor do they murder or steal…they love their neighbors as themselves and they have the sweetest talk in the world…always laughing.”

And in a letter he wrote to one of his Spanish patrons, Columbus said: “They are very simple and honest and exceedingly liberal with all they have, none of them refusing anything he may possess when he is asked for it. They exhibit great love toward all others in preference to themselves.” But then, in the midst of all this, in his journal, Columbus writes: “They would make fine servants. With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.”

Yes, this was how Columbus saw the Indians—not as hospitable hosts, but as

“servants” to “do whatever we want”.

And what did Columbus want? This is not hard to determine. In the first two weeks of journal entries, there is one word that recurs 75 times: GOLD. In the standard accounts of Columbus, what is emphasized again and again is his religious feeling, his desire to convert the natives to Christianity, his reverence for the Bible. Yes, he was concerned about God. But more about gold. Just one additional letter.

His was a limited alphabet. Yes, all over the island of Hispaniola, where he, his brothers, his men, spent most of their time, he erected crosses. But also, all over the island, they built gallows—340 of them by the year 1500.

Crosses and gallows—that deadly historic juxtaposition.

In his quest for gold, Columbus, seeing bits of gold among the Indians, concluded there were huge amounts of it. He ordered the natives to find a certain amount of gold within a certain period of time. And if they did not meet their quota, their arms were hacked off. The others were to learn from this and deliver the gold.

Samuel Eliot Morison, the Harvard historian who was Columbus’ admiring biographer, acknowledged this.

He wrote: “Whoever thought up this ghastly system, Columbus was responsible for it, as the only means of producing gold for export…. Those who fled to the mountains were hunted with hounds, and of those who escaped, starvation and disease took toll, while thousands of the poor creatures in desperation took cassava poison to end their miseries.”

Morison continues: “So the policy and acts of Columbus for which he alone was responsible began the depopulation of the terrestrial paradise that was Hispaniola in 1492. Of the original natives, estimated by a modern ethnologist at 300,000 in number, one-third were killed off between 1494 and 1496. By 1508, an enumeration showed only 60,000 alive…. in 1548 Oviedo [Morison is referring to Fernandez de Oviedo, the official

Spanish historian of the conquest] doubted whether 500 Indians remained.”

But Columbus could not obtain enough gold to send home to impress the King and Queen and his Spanish financiers, so he decided to send back to Spain another kind of loot: slaves. They rounded up about 1,200 natives, selected 500, and these were sent, jammed together, on the voyage across the Atlantic. Two hundred died on the way, of cold, of sickness.

In Columbus’ journal, an entry of September 1498 reads: “From here one might send, in the name of the Holy Trinity, as many slaves as could be sold…”

What the Spaniards did to the Indians is told in horrifying detail by Bartolomé de las Casas, whose writings give the most thorough account of the SpanishIndian encounter.

Las Casas was a Dominican priest who came to the New World a few years after Columbus, spent 40 years on Hispaniola and nearby islands, and became the leading advocate in Spain for the rights of the natives.

Las Casas, in his book The Devastation of the Indies, writes of the Arawaks: “…of all the infinite universe of humanity, these people are the most guileless, the most devoid of wickedness and duplicity…yet into this sheepfold…there came some Spaniards who immediately behaved like ravening beasts….

Their reason for killing and destroying… is that the Christians have an ultimate aim which is to acquire gold…”

The cruelties multiplied. Las Casas saw soldiers stabbing Indians for sport, dashing babies’ heads on rocks. And when the Indians resisted, the Spaniards hunted them down, equipped for killing with horses, armor plate, lances, pikes, rifles, crossbows, and vicious dogs. Indians who took things belonging to the Spaniards—they were not accustomed to the concept of private ownership and gave freely of their own possessions—were beheaded or burned at the stake.

Las Casas’ testimony was corroborated by other eyewitnesses. A group of Dominican friars, addressing the Spanish monarchy in 1519, hoping for the Spanish government to intercede, told about unspeakable atrocities, children thrown to dogs to be devoured, newborn babies born to women prisoners flung into the jungle to die.

Forced labor in the mines and on the land led to much sickness and death. Many children died because their mothers, overworked and starved, had no milk for them. Las Casas, in Cuba, estimated that 7,000 children died in three months.

The greatest toll was taken by sickness, because the Europeans brought with them diseases against which the natives had no immunity: typhoid, typhus, diphtheria, smallpox.

As in any military conquest, women came in for especially brutal treatment. One Italian nobleman named Cuneo recorded an early sexual encounter. The “Admiral” he refers to

is Columbus, who, as part of his agreement with the Spanish monarchy, insisted he be made an Admiral.

Cuneo wrote: …I captured a very beautiful Carib woman, whom the said Lord Admiral gave to me and with whom…I conceived desire to take pleasure. I wanted to put my desire into execution but she did not want it and treated me with her finger nails in such a manner that I wished I had never begun. But seeing that, I took a rope and thrashed her well…. Finally we came to an agreement.

There is other evidence which adds up to a picture of widespread rape of native women.

Samuel Eliot Morison wrote: “In the Bahamas, Cuba and Hispaniola they found young and beautiful women, who everywhere were naked, in most places accessible, and presumably complaisant.” Who presumes this? Morison, and so many others.

Morison saw the conquest as so many writers after him have done, as one of the great romantic adventures of world history.

He seemed to get carried away by what appeared to him as a masculine conquest.

He wrote: Never again may mortal men hope to recapture the amazement, the wonder, the delight of those October days in 1492, when the new world gracefully yielded her virginity to the conquering Castilians.

The language of Cuneo (“we came to an agreement”), and of Morison (“gracefully yielded”) written almost 500 years apart, surely suggests how persistent through modern history has been the mythology that rationalizes sexual brutality by seeing it as “complaisant.”

So, I read Columbus’ journal, I read las Casas. I also read Hans Koning’s pioneering work of our time—Columbus: His Enterprise, which, at the time I wrote my People’s History, was the only contemporary account I could find which departed from the standard treatment.

(Teacher) Bill Bigelow did a study of recent children’s books on Columbus.

He found them remarkably alike in their repetition of the traditional point of view. A typical fifth-grade biography of Columbus begins: “There once was a boy who loved the salty sea.” Well! I can imagine a children’s biography of Attila the Hun beginning with the sentence: “There once was a boy who loved horses.”

Another children’s book in Bigelow’s study, this time for second-graders: “The King and Queen looked at the gold and the Indians. They listened in wonder to Columbus’ stories of adventure. Then they all went to church to pray and sing.

Tears of joy filled Columbus’ eyes.”

he Phoenix Suns released the following statement: “‘The Hawk’ revolutionized the game and remains to this day an icon of the sport and one of basketball’s great innovators,” the team issued the following statement. “His unique combination of size, grace and athleticism was well ahead of its time and his signature style of play is now a hallmark of the modern game.

A flip of the coin changed the Sun’s fortunes and he helped put Phoenix on the map as the city’s first professional sports superstar.

Rightfully, he became the first Suns player inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and his No. 42 hangs in the rafters at Talking Stick Resort Arena as part of our Ring of Honor. Connie’s passion for the game was only matched by his desire to give back to the Phoenix community, a role which he played proudly as a Suns community ambassador, spreading warmth and kindness to everyone he encountered. We will miss Hawk dearly.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends as we mourn the passing of a true Suns legend.”

From his NBA bio: CONNIE Hawkins’ career holds as much mystique as that of any other NBA Hall of Famer. A man of remarkable talent who played much of his career in the shadows, he didn’t put up legendary numbers during his seven years in the NBA: only 16.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.

Nevertheless, Hawkins was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1992, an acknowledgment that he had been unjustly denied the opportunity to show his talent in his most productive years, and that most basketball fans had likewise been denied the opportunity to see the best that this innovative player had to offer.

Most of what Connie Hawkins did was never caught on film. He was a New York playground legend who was exiled for years to exhibitions with obscure teams in half-filled arenas. Accounts of his finest moments circulated by word of mouth, and he never lost his hold on the imaginations of those fans who did catch him in his prime.

Praised by his contemporaries as perhaps the most talented forward ever to play the game (this was before Julius Erving and Larry Bird), the 6-8 Hawkins was known as one of the first players capable of swooping, soaring flights to the hoop, followed by acrobatic, throw-down dunks.

Cornelius Hawkins was born on July 17, 1942, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. By the age of 11 he was dunking.

Word flew through the neighborhood. Pretty soon there were stories that had him jumping off the planet. They claimed he broke the laws of gravity. “Someone said if I didn’t break them, I was slow to obey them,” he told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

In 1960 he was a Parade magazine High School All-American. But in 1961, when he was a freshman at Iowa, a gambling and point-shaving scandal broke out in New York.

Hawkins was not arrested, indicted or even directly implicated. But it was suggested that he had introduced other players to a man convicted of fixing games. The principals in the scandal claimed that Hawkins had no knowledge of any fixed games. Nevertheless, he was linked to the scandal and therefore tainted.

Before he even suited up for one game, Iowa said, “So long.” The NBA, a young league struggling for growth and mindful of its image, said, “No, never.”

So Hawkins became a nomad. He toured the world with the Harlem Globetrotters and played with fledgling leagues while hoping that he would eventually be allowed to fly with the big birds.

League and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. The best thing about the ABL, said Hawkins, was that it had a team in Hawaii. The ABL folded during its second season, and Hawkins circled the world with the Globetrotters for two years. It wasn’t competition, but Hawkins needed the paycheck.

“There was a chance that I couldn’t have gotten a job at all,” he recalled in 1992.

Hawkins played 70 games for the Pittsburgh Pipers in the inaugural 196768 season of the American Basketball Association. The ABA was a little flaky, but its teams did have a lot of great talent on their rosters. And unlike the Globetrotters, and to a large extent, the ABL, it was a bona fide professional league.

The ABA had expected its star attraction to be a Rick Barry, who had been lured over from the NBA’s San Francisco Warriors, but Barry was forced to sit out the season as the result of a legal ruling. So Hawkins became the foremost star in the new league. Roger Brown and Doug Moe, two other players

who had been tainted by the college betting scandals but, like Hawkins, were never convicted of any wrongdoing, also hooked up with the new league and were among its best performers.

Hawkins led Pittsburgh to a 54-24 regular-season record and into the playoffs. The Pipers waxed the Indiana Pacers in three straight games in the opening round, then trounced the Minnesota Muskies, four games to one, to enter the first ABA Finals. Their opponent was the New Orleans Buccaneers.

The New Orleans squad took a 3-2 series lead, but the Pipers regrouped to take the final two contests and claim the ABA Championship.

Hawkins led the league in scoring with 26.8 points per game and pulled down 13.5 rebounds per contest, second in the circuit to Mel Daniels of Minnesota. He shot .519 from the field, second in the ABA to teammate Tom “Trooper” Washington. Hawkins’s numbers earned him the ABA Most Valuable Player Award for 1967-68. He was joined on the All-ABA Team by Doug Moe, Mel Daniels,

Larry Jones, and Charlie Williams.

The next year the team moved to Minnesota, and Hawkins played about half of the season. In 47 games he averaged 30.2 points (second in the ABA to the Oakland Oaks’ Barry) and 11.4 rebounds (fifth in the league), while shooting .503 from the field.

He repeated as an All-ABA selection, joining Barry, Daniels, James Jones and Larry Jones.

The Pipers moved back to Pittsburgh for the 1969-70 season (and changed their name to the Condors the season after that), but the Hawk was about to fly to greener pastures. In two ABA seasons Hawkins had averaged 28.2 ppg and 12.6 rpg. His playoff scoring average was also 28.2 points per game.

Hawkins was an awesome offensive force in one-on-one situations -- a shot creator who was quick, agile and a great leaper. A decent outside shooter, he was most in his element when exploding past defenders, wheeling toward the basket with giant strides, and packing the ball through the hoop. “He was the first guy on that Dr. J, Michael Jordan level,” said Doug Moe in Sports Illustrated.

“Long strides. Hold it in one hand. Wheel it around. Nobody could match him for that.”

In 1969 a couple of significant events occurred. A Life magazine article strongly suggested that Hawkins was innocent of any wrongdoing in the gambling scandal of nearly a decade earlier. The article painted Hawkins as a terrified teenager who had been trying to mollify his questioners by agreeing with them.

While the article was causing a stir, Hawkins’s lawsuit against the NBA was working its way toward a resolution. Later that year NBA Commissioner J. Walter Kennedy lifted the ban against Hawkins after settling his antitrust suit for more than $1 million. That allowed Hawkins to join the Phoenix Suns at age 27.

Hawkins was generous in his feelings toward the league. “I was so happy to play, I didn’t have any problems with animosity or bitterness at all,” he told reporter Ron Rapoport. “As soon as I got that Phoenix Suns uniform, I just wanted to play.”

Having found redemption, Hawkins now set out to prove that he was as good as his legend. In 1969-70 Hawkins played 81 games with Phoenix and poured in 24.6 ppg, sixth in the NBA. His scoring average was tops on the Suns, who had two other 20-point scorers in Dick Van Arsdale and Gail Goodrich.

Hawkins also hauled in 10.4 rebounds per contest and doled out 391 assists, nearly 5 per game. He was named to the All-NBA First Team along with Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Jerry West and Billy Cunningham. Although Hawkins’s numbers slipped slightly over the next two seasons, he was still a star. He averaged 20.9 and 21.0 ppg in 1970-71 and 1971-72, respectively, but his rebounds per game fell to single digits.

Those would be considered fantastic seasons for most players, but Hawkins came into the league with a reputation. Some writers and fans began to make critical comments.

There were questions about his desire to win.

The athleticism was there, but the passion seemed to be lacking. Maybe, it was said, the intensity had been left on the playground, on the ABL and ABA courts or in clowning with the Globetrotters.

can understand why you feel Washington is a place of “petty nonsense,” as you said Wednesday when you called a news conference to rebut charges that you called Trump a moron last summer after a meeting of national security officials at the Pentagon.

I’m also reasonably sure you called him a moron, which doesn’t make Washington any less petty. You probably called him a moron because almost all of us out here in the rest of America routinely call him that.

But you’re right: There are far more important issues than the epithet you likely used to describe your boss.

On the other hand, your calling him a moron wouldn’t itself have mushroomed into a headline issue – even in petty Washington – if there weren’t deep concerns about the President’s state of mind to begin with.

I bet every cabinet secretary has from time to time called his boss a moron. I was a cabinet secretary once, and although I don’t recall ever saying Bill Clinton was a moron, I might have thought it, especially when I found out about Monica Lewinsky. But Bill Clinton was no moron.

The reason your moronic comment about Trump made the headlines is that Trump really is a moron, in the sense you probably

meant it: He’s impulsive, mercurial, often cruel, and pathologically narcissistic. Some psychologists who have studied his behavior have concluded he’s a sociopath.

Washington is petty, but it’s not nonsensical. It latches on to gaffes only when they reveal something important. As journalist Michael Kinsley once said, “A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth – some obvious truth he isn’t supposed to say.”

Face it. You are Secretary of State – the nation’s chief diplomat – under a president who’s dangerously nuts.

Last weekend, for example, Trump publicly said you were wasting your time trying to open talks with North Korea. Does he have a better idea? Any halfway rational president would ask his Secretary of State to try to talk with Kim Jong-Un. And there’s Iran. You and Defense Secretary James Mattis have both stated the nuclear agreement should be retained. That, too, is only rational. The International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran has been honoring the agreement. Without it, Iran would restart its nuclear program.

But Trump is on the verge of decertifying the agreement in order to save face (in the 2016 campaign he called it an “embarrassment to America”) and further puncture Barack Obama’s legacy. His narcissism is endangering the world.

You tried to mediate the dispute between Qatar and its Arab neighbors. That, too, was the reasonable thing to do.

But then Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner sided with the United Arab Emirates, where they have business interests. Less than one hour after you called for a “calm and thoughtful dialogue” between Qatar and its neighbors, Trump blasted Qatar for financing terrorism. That was also nuts.

You are rightly appalled at Trump’s behavior. I can understand why you distanced yourself when Trump blamed “both sides” for violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. And why you were horrified when Trump gave a wildly partisan speech to the Boy Scouts of America, which you once headed.

Given all this, I’m not surprised to hear that you’ve talked about resigning, but that Mattis and John Kelly, the White House chief of staff, have talked you out of it.

I urge you not to resign. America and the world need sane voices speaking into the ear of our Narcissist-in-Chief.

As Senator Bob Corker, Republican of Tennessee and chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee said recently, it’s you, Mattis, and Kelly who “help separate our country from chaos.” I don’t think Corker was referring to chaos abroad.

ets Head Coach Todd Bowles had a pretty emphatic demeanor following his team’s gritty win over the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. Although his team won their third game in a row, you would not be able to tell that by Bowles’ approach.

“We haven’t done anything yet,” the words of Gang Green’s head coach as the Jets find themselves in a 2-way tie for first place in the AFC East. When I wrote my introduction football article a few weeks back, I’ll be quite honest, if someone would have told me that the New York Jets would be one win away of sole possession of first place, despite all the key departures that had left

during the off-season, I would find that very unlikely to happen. Here we are.

Since the calendar hit October, the Jets simply have been hotter than a Phoenix cactus with victories against the Dolphins and Jaguars to add on to their three-game winning streak. With the current and unexpected position the team is currently in, is it enough for Coach Bowles to keep his job? The jury is still out on that outcome; however, believe it or not, this year could be Bowles’ best or worst job as the team’s head coach. For now, let’s give him his due. This is not a football team that is winning with talent on their roster. In fact, the Jets are ranked 26th in total offense and 25th in total defense. The craziest stat is with their first-place record, they have been outscored 47-14 in the fourth quarter. For now, the team is gelling with a group of young players who are sticking like glue to go along with a journeyman quarterback in Josh McCown who had been doing just enough with his play to answer

the critics that this Jets team will not be the laughingstock of the league.

In comes a showdown with the Patriots this Sunday with first place on the line.

Although Bowles has seemed to be getting a good vibe from his young and inexperienced ball club, he hopes it can continue through the second half of the season. The Jets late-season schedule is brutal. There’s really no other way or word to put it. The team has games against the Panthers, Chiefs, Broncos, Saints and another battle with the Patriots on New Year’s Eve, the team’s season finale.

Can the Jets withstand their upcoming schedule? Or are we looking at this year’s “Cinderella team” in the NFL. Stay tuned!

Hawkins, too, had entered the stage of his career where, although he was still playing solid minutes, his numbers were declining -for example, his scoring dropped to 12.6 ppg.

In 1974-75, appearing in 43 games with the Lakers, Hawkins was a spot player, averaging 8.0 ppg. In 1975-76 he moved on to Atlanta and contributed 8.2 ppg. Hawkins retired after that season at age 33. In his seven NBA seasons Hawkins averaged 16.5 ppg, bumping that up to 19.3 per outing in

playoff games. His election to the Hall of Fame was due in large part to his showmanship. Hawkins was the first player to demonstrate the style, flash and cool that were trademarks of later players such as Erving and Michael Jordan. His enshrinement also acknowledged that not all of the greatest basketball was played on the NBA courts. Some of the most poetic ball was played in dimly lit recreation center gyms and on blacktop courts with chain nets. That’s where Connie Hawkins really built his reputation. By the time he finally made it to the NBA, he had just enough juice left to prove that, yes, the things they said about him were true.

Jumpin’ Jackie Jackson Looks Back

edford-Stuyvesant has produced many notables over the years and the passing of legend Connie Hawkins prompted us to contact, at the suggestion of Blaine Robinson, Jumpin’ Jackie Jackson, a Boys High teammate of Hawkins who led the team to the PSAL Championship in 1959. Jackson became a legend himself playing at the famed Rucker Tournament in the 60’s playing against future Hall of Famers like Wilt Chamberlain.

They were childhood friends, from the YMCA where an early mentor, Police Officer Gene Smith, helped run the recreational programs and later at Boys High School. “I was a senior and he was a sophomore when we started. I left high school in 1958 and he had two more years to go.”

The games were very intense and there were a lot of good players in the city, Brownsville, Red Hook, there were good players all over. There was a lot of competition in the PSAL back in those days. We all grew up together. We were all poor, but didn’t realize it until we got to college and found out what we didn’t have, Virginia Union University is a school with longstanding ties to Boys High. “We put them on the map,” said Jackson. “Bruce Braggon and Eddie Simmons were from Boys HS. Howie Jones was the coach and he played for Boys High in the Forties.”

“The High”, as it was known back in the day, has a long history of producing great talent. The names come to Jackson easily. Sihugo Green, a 6’2” guard-forward from Duquesne University, was selected with the first pick of the 1956 NBA draft, ahead of Bill Russell. “Solly Walker, who just died, was the first Black man to go to St. John’s University and then there was Tommy Davis, the baseball player with the Dodgers. He was a two-way player, baseball and basketball and graduated from the High in 1956. People forget Davis because he went with baseball and was the batting champion two years in a row, but he was a great basketballer as well. Then you’ve got Lenny Wilkens.” He didn’t go any further with Wilkens, named nine times as an NBA All-Star as a player and four times as head coach. He didn’t need to say more.

How’d you get your nickname Jumpin’ Jack? “’Cause I could jump. I could jump higher than anyone in the city, East Coast, West Coast, down South and North.”

In 2003, the 1960 Boys High School basketball team was named to the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.
