15th Anniversary of African Burial Ground Ceremonies

Fifteen years ago, millions around the world memorialized the reinterment of the remains of 419 formerly enslaved Africans of the colonial era. In 1991, skeletal remains were discovered and unearthed during excavations for a federal building in lower Manhattan. After eighteen months of struggle by the descendants of enslaved and free Africans, the General Services Administration ensued to have the 419 excavated remains biologically and culturally studied by scientists at Howard University, to be re-interred in their original resting place on October 4, 2003. On October 5, 2007, the outdoor memorial of the National Monument was dedicated and now stands as a testament to a tragic history and a victory for not only descendant communities, but for people and nations everywhere. This week the Rev. Dr. Herbert Daughtry, Dr. Sherrill D. Wilson, Peggy KingJorde and Rodney Leon will be among the leaders honoring the strength and resilience of the ancestors at the African Burial National Monument, today and tomorrow. See Pages 8, 9, 10
