Cosby in Jail, Kavanaugh in Jeopardy

Bill Cosby is lead to jail in handcuffs, a sight many – in particular his 60 accusers – thought they’d never see.

Cosby escaped the harsher sentence that his accusers say he deserves, because he faced only one of them, Andrea Constand, in court. She says he drugged and sexually assaulted her in 2004. The statute of limitations had run out for most of the other accusers.

What Kind of Time is This?

Sadness is the only way to describe watching Bill Cosby being led away in handcuffs for having drugged and raped women forever altering their lives. Armed with the best legal team a multi-millionaire can buy he was tried by a jury and found guilty.

He did the crime and now he has to do the time. And that’s how that goes.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh, accused of multiple sexual assaults, was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Trump, also accused of

multiple sexual assaults, and as of Wednesday, it looks like he’s destined for the seat.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hear testimony only from accuser Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Kavanaugh on Thursday and the Republicans intend to vote to confirm on Friday morning. A second woman Deborah Ramirez and now a third woman, in a sworn affidavit, has come forward alleging inappropriate sexual conduct by Kavanaugh, but that does not seem to matter to the Republicans who are proceeding as all-white juries did when white men were accused of killing African

Things are not looking as rock-solid for Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court amid a third allegation of him being present, and possibly drugging victims of a gang rape, at a high school party.

Kavanuagh’s initial accuser testifies today before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Christine Blasey Ford says he covered her mouth, held her down and thrust himself on top of her at a party during high school days. The Senate Judiciary Committee vows to proceed with a vote on Kavanaugh’s appointment on Friday, which some lawmakers and news analysts say renders Blasey Ford’s testimony before the body a sham of a hearing.

If this goes forward, and Kavanaugh is confirmed, at 53 yearsold, he can be on the court for decades and there are no guarantees that other women won’t come forward with new accusations. If confirmed, we have not heard the last of it. This is only the beginning.

What Happened to… … Elaine Greene’s Journey Fighting Property Theft April 15, 2016 Elaine Greene is tired of “real estate thieves stealing properties” and she wants the community to join her “fight back” campaign.

At the Monday, April 4 Community Board 3 public meeting, Ms. Greene invited everyone present to sign petitions on behalf of Rita Gray, her former landlord who “lost” one of Central Brooklyn’s prime corner properties, a huge structure on the northwest corner of Bedford & Fulton, across from the El-Taqwa Mosque.

The story of a possible property scam was first reported in Our Time Press last fall. Successive stories have appeared over the course of the winter. Ms. Gray’s tenants hired a lawyer to stop evictions by the new owner, and Ms. Gray took it to the Kings County DA’s Office. Until a few weeks ago, Ms. Greene held on to hope that Ms. Gray would pull through it all, and with the help of her devoted tenants, win back her building. Ms. Gray and the tenants were fighting an uphill battle allegedly against the odds of statute-of-limitations laws, among other matters and unfortunately they were forced to vacate the building by February 29.

In August when a contractor friend saw the offending developer’s shoddy extension-building work at the 392 property, among other violations, he warned Nathaniel that the situation would get worse. And, as of this week, it has.

As can be seen in these photos taken by Mr. Nathaniel, the situation is deplorable.

Nathaniel says his complaints to community organizations and agencies seemed to fall on deaf ears. A call to the Bridge Street Development Corporation made some headway. BSDC’s Shawn Whitehorn facilitated a call to the Buildings Department which resulted in an inspector checking out damage. Mr. Nathaniel was issued a violation … more to place this on the books, than to “victimize” him, he told us.

…Out of Scope, Out of Line: Watchful Neighbors Stop Building Extension April 17, 2014 On Friday, April 4, 2014, Elizabeth O. Smith, 98, an angel matriarch of the 800 Lafayette Avenue block, passed. So legacy was very much embedded in the mind and being of her daughter, community advocate Patricia Smith when the next day, April 5, her thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of machines, hammers and tools blasting, coming from the house adjacent to hers. The sounds of construction work didn’t annoy her as much as the intentions – and disrespect -- of those who hired the builders.

The workers had demolished her fence.

Patricia quickly placed a call to her friend and neighbor Yvette Welsh. One worker informed Ms. Smith that they were constructing an addition to the back of the brownstone building, and it was going up three stories.

Ms. Smith shot back: “The work is illegal.” She demanded the permit, and they brought out a floor plan. She commanded them to cease and call the owner. They stopped and called the owner.

Our Time Press expected to meet 82-year-old Mr. Kenneth Anderson of 145 Clifton Place on Thursday, February 23 — after we had closed the door on the issue for that day.

We had confirmed in a phone call, as a favor to a friend, that we would talk to him about his story — another in the continuing reported sagas of theft of property involving mostly families and residents of color as victims; a story about house-thieves using false deeds and legal maneuvers to prey on vulnerable homeowners to steal their homes, legacies and dignity.

Mr. Anderson’s tone was cheerful when the publisher spoke to him by phone, as he had great expectation that a March 7 court date would be the turning point in his life.

A life overshadowed by reverse mortgages he said he never requested on his fullypaid-for property. This narrative has been continuing for nearly two decades and now an LLC, using his address in their name, has forced his tenants from his dwelling. Mr. Anderson believed that sharing his story would inspire others caught up in a similar nightmare to find inspiration to fight back.

Neighbors on the block described Mr. Anderson as a humble person, and not one to seek media “celebrity.”

City Seizes Multiple Properties in Ongoing Real Estate Theft ■■

n a growing and shocking scandal, Kings County Politics has learned the City has taken another fully paid property from a senior of color. A man who has worked his entire life and wants to leave his property to his four children and five grandchildren.

McConnell Dorce, 69, who bought his four-unit property at 373 Rockaway Parkway in East New York for $25,000 in 1975 and who has long paid off the mortgage on the property, was recently sent a notice stating the City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is taking his property under the City's Third-Party Transfer (TPT) program.

The program designates qualified sponsors as partners with HPD [the City] to purchase and rehabilitate distressed, vacant or occupied multifamily properties in order to improve and preserve housing affordable to low- to moderate-income households.

This was news to Dorce, who has always maintained his property, and has his son and grandson living in one of the units, and who now could face not only losing their inheritance but could also be facing homelessness.

The property value of the building is about $1 million, according to Dorce.

Dorce’s situation is somewhat similar to that of Marlene Saunders, 74, who nearly lost her paid-off brownstone at 1217 Dean Street until KCP and City Council member Robert Cornegy Jr. (D-Bedford-Stuyvesant, Northern Crown Heights) intervened three days ago.

Like Saunders, Dorce was behind in his property taxes and like Saunders, he paid property tax bills that the city withdrew from his bank account but did not apply to any of his tax bills. After further inquiry, he was told to talk to HPD about any situation regarding the property.

search of Seabrook-Fisher found she formerly worked at the Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), a nonprofit to which Mayor Bill de Blasio is very close.

De Blasio appointed former FAC Executive Director Michelle de la Uz as the City's Planning Commissioner. FAC has real estate assets of over $100 million and a housing development pipeline of nearly 1000 units representing total development costs of more than $400 million, according to the Planning Commission website bio of de la Uz. Additionally, as in the case of Saunders, Dorce only realized something was off when he received notice his property was already in a transfer process to Neighborhood Restore, a nonprofit third party working with the City through a court proceeding that now has control over his property. Dorce claims the lack of information has left him without the ability

to attend or defend any court proceedings in defense of his property.

City Council member Alicka AmprySamuel (D-Brownsville, East New York, East Flatbush, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights), in whose district Dorce’s property is located, said she was only recently made aware of Dorce’s situation after he visited her office claiming he had lost his home to the city through the Third-Party Transfer program.

Dorce claims that the City took his home from him and placed it into the program only after he was forced to endure an emergency repair job on his property from the City, involuntarily, that he eventually paid for.

At that point, Ampry-Samuel said she then read KCP’s recent story on Saunders and was shocked. The Councilwoman now believes there is clearly an issue with HPD. The city agency, in a bid to get their hands on these properties, told Council members there were a certain number of violations by absentee landlords and slumlords that needed a solution.

A solution that included the City stepping in to help save and maintain the homes and a nonprofit to manage the property. They then went on to show the Council pictures of dilapidated properties to help make their case, according to Ampry-Samuel.

“Some of the information HPD provided to the Council seems false in so far as how the City can step in and take these homes.

That’s what I’m looking into now and I want answers,” said Ampry-Samuel.

“To have two community residents have valuable property that’s paid off, in what world is it appropriate to take their homes away? I had a lien sale back in the spring to help families save their properties and did not see this man’s [Dorce] name on the lien sale list,” she added.

Ampry-Samuel said she is seeking an injunction on all Third-Party Transfers until HPD provides answers. She also wants to know how many of these properties were put into the TPT program that were owned by individuals from communities of color.

Meanwhile, attorney Yolande Nicholson, whose practice focuses on foreclosure work

and who looked into Saunders case, said she is highly suspicious of the City bringing scores of foreclosure cases bundled before Kings County Supreme Court Judge Mark Partnow on Dec. 14, 2017, just two weeks before Christmas.

According to the court’s 23-page document, over 60 properties and scores of units spanning Central Brooklyn, BedfordStuyvesant, Kensington and Flatbush, have a foreclosure judgment on them for the same date. A proceeding Nicholson in her 30-plus years as a lawyer has never seen.

“The families and property owners were rendered nameless and left clueless by the court proceedings and the judgment. Looking at the court records, the foreclosures were done together. They were all done in one action. This family’s property was part of a pool presented by the city to Judge Partnow in a manner that is still extremely inexplicable,” said Nicholson.

Current New York City foreclosure proceedings require an initial summons and complaint process, a step Saunders and Dorce alongside Nicholson, claim never happened to them, leading to their homes being in City hands.

“I don’t know how they did it. They devised a letter, under Chapter 4, under Section 11 of the administrative code and it appears they were able to walk it in to the court. None of the normal procedures that would give the homeowner notice –an opportunity to redeem, an opportunity to respond–seems to have not been followed, ” added Nicholson.

Nicholson worries that as more time goes by, the unlisted homeowners on the judgement will be less likely to gain back ownership of their property, or at best become aware they are no longer homeowners. She likens the judgement used for mass seizure by the City to feudalistic legalize, a time in medieval Europe in which relationships were derived from the holding of land in exchange for service or labour.

“We have one of the few constitutions in the country, that states, ‘there will not be a taking without a due process of law’. This nearly brings me to tears,” said Nicholson.

New Stringer Report: Options for Working New Yorkers VanishingCity Lost Over One Million Affordable Apartments Since 2005 (New York, NY) — New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer today released an updated analysis that reveals the alarming decline of affordable apartments for New Yorkers since 2005. The report, “The Gap is Still Growing: New York City’s Continuing Housing Affordability Challenge,” builds off of a 2014 analysis released by the comptroller and shows that as hundreds of thousands of new residents move to the city – not only has the total number of units failed to keep up but the alarming drop in affordable and rent-regulated units has accelerated, with over one million affordable apartments leaving the market since 2005. This dynamic is leaving working New Yorkers with fewer affordable rental units and is fueling a growing affordable housing crisis.

Key findings from the report include: Since 2005, New York City experienced a net loss of over one million apartments renting for $900 or less.

At the same time, the number of apartments renting for $2,700 or more jumped four-fold, replacing many lost low-rent units.

A large portion of the decline in affordable housing comes from the erosion of

rent-stabilized units, of which the city has lost 88,518 units since 2005 – more than the entire addition of new rental housing over the same period.

All rent figures are in inflation-adjusted 2017 dollars, further emphasizing the rising cost of renting an apartment in New York City.

“Our city is losing low-rent apartments every day, and it’s putting whole communities at risk. We have an affordable housing shortage – and this report shows how quickly the loss of affordable housing has accelerated in the last decade,” said Comptroller Stringer.

“Behind these one million-lost units are countless New Yorkers – families, seniors, students and immigrants – who are working harder than ever to put a roof over their heads.

We can’t let the entrance fee to the city become a luxury condo, or we will stop being the city we know and love. As our city’s economy and population continues to expand, we need to use all the tools we can to protect our communities. Lawmakers in Albany must act swiftly to eliminate vacancy decontrol and pass other common-sense rent regulation reform that will

preserve our affordable housing stock and keep New York accessible for working families.”

“The Upstate/Downstate Housing Alliance is pleased to stand with NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer as he presents a report about the extreme loss of housing that is affordable for low-income New Yorkers. Across New York City, half of low-income renters pay more than 50% of their income in rent. I will say it again, tens of thousands of New Yorkers are a paycheck or emergency away from homelessness. With the weakening of the rent laws, lack of universal rent control and the ability

of landlords of unregulated apartments to evict tenants at whim, we are raising our voices to stress the urgent need for a course of correction,” said Delsenia Glover of the Upstate/Downstate Housing Alliance’s #HousingJusticeForAll campaign. “We are in the worst homeless crisis this state has seen since the Great Depression – there are 63,000 people sleeping in shelters each night in this city and 89,000 across the state. The Upstate/Downstate Housing Alliance commends Comptroller Stringer for providing the data that shows that the time has come to put power back in the hands of the people and demand that our state legislature to fix this massive crisis.”

Comptroller Stringer is calling on Albany lawmakers to act swiftly on a package of rent reform measures including eliminating vacancy decontrol, reforming major capital improvements, reforming individual apartment increases, reforming preferential rents, and ending the 20% vacancy bonus on rent-stabilized apartments.

UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY President Donald Trump’s 9/25 address at the new UN General Assembly Diplomatic Debate was a lot of bellicose chatter about “America First” among the family of nations.

He attacked allies like Germany and foes like Iran and Venezuela. He warned that the US will reduce its payments to the UN and monitor peacekeeping operations, will not attend any Migration Studies, saying that people need to stay in their own country to make their country great. While applauding himself for America’s great economic strides during his tenure, the audience of heads of state and diplomats laughed, seemingly to his chagrin.

The 2nd Annual Bloomberg Global Business Forum, an invitational, will be held on 9/26, concurrent with the General Assembly session. It is an opportunity for

The US cut $185 million in financial aid to Palestinian refugees, hoping to coerce the Palestinian President to attend US-led peace talks with Israel. On Thursday, 9/27,

foreign ministers from Germany, Jordan, Sweden, Japan and the EU will co-host a lunch with the UN Secretary-General to find ways to fill the funding void created by the United States. Americans were not invited to lunch.

The New York-based December 12th Movement organized a Harlem Welcome Parade for the Zimbabwe delegation to the UN last week.

Cuba’s first post-Castro President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, is scheduled to speak at a public forum at The Riverside Church, 490 Riverside Drive, Harlem, on Wednesday, September 26 at pm, presumably to open new lines of communication to promote better US-Cuba relations. US recalled most of the diplomatic staff in Cuba after complaints about headaches and other physical abnormalities last year.

Months later, the Cuban Government has been cleared of any wrongdoing by US Intel. It is believed that the Russians were responsible for the Americans’ discomfort.

Scientists speculate that it was microwave technology that caused the source of medical problems Americans experienced.

RIP: Phyllis Anderson, beloved sister of Dr. Norma Goodwin, MD, passed away on September 9 from complications related to congestive heart failure associated with COPD. A retired science teacher, Ms. Anderson participated in various events hosted by the National Medical Association, the Black doctors' organization-regional conferences stateside and in the Caribbean.

Phyllis Anderson RIP: Trailblazing dancer/choreographer Arthur Mitchell, 84, passed away last week. Harlem-born talent, a graduate of the FAME school, the HS of Performing Arts, Mitchell shattered myths about Black dexterity in classical dance while reaching mythic heights with his dance prowess. He was a star dancer with the NYC Ballet, which had no Black dancers before his arrival. Eventually a NYC Ballet lead dancer, he was applauded nationally and internationally during his NYC Ballet tenure from 1956-1968. Summoned to Brazil to start a dance company catering to Afro-Brazilians, Mitchell decided to stay put in NY where he founded the Dance Theater of Harlem, the nation’s first major Black classical dance company which had a touring company that performed in South Africa, the Soviet Union, London and other European capitals.

Thirty Days Hath September

N

ew things are born in September.

The ninth month of the year is the time when all of the energy that we’ve poured into the year begins to give birth. September represents the completion of a cycle. The word September derives from the Latin word septem, which means seven, and most numerologists, astrologists and hood scholars understand that this is the number of completion. Christians teach that God rested on the seventh day after completing all of creation. Hinduism teaches that there are seven chakras. So, September is the completion of a cycle, and the calling for us to begin to reap our harvests from what we have spent all year planting.

There is no better place to feel this energy of birth and completion than in the Village of Brooklyn. Here, our diversity is our strength, our creativity is our skill and our borough is our muse. In the County of Kings, we live the evolution in real time, the end of the summer bringing the beginning of the fall. One week you’re carefree, taking in rays out in Prospect Park or on Brighton Beach, and the next week you’re back to waking up at 6am so that you can get the kids ready for school. autumn filmed while still wading in the summer sun, that slim moment before the change makes you forget about the one and remember the other, that nanosecond when it is all in all.

The sun is big and full, and the leaves are just starting to change, and it’s cool with a light wind at night while still hot and humid at the height of the day. The kids go to school for that first week, but then they come home and go outside to play, respecting autumn’s demands during business hours while abiding by their fleeting summer desires in the afternoons.

And then, just when you think autumn has mandated a rigid regiment of school, you get two days off in the second week of September for Rosh Hashanah, and then another day in the third week for Yom Kippur. Thank you to our Jewish cousins, proof that we all win when diversity exists.

For me, the bridge between summer and autumn in Brooklyn begins with the Labor Day Carnival on Eastern Parkway. It is there where all of your summer sins are washed away in sweat and bacchanal. You eat like a glutton, drink the spirits in abundance, dance and share your energy with close friends and complete strangers. You let go. You let go of everything and allow the rhythms and the

colors and the people to spin you into salvation. And then you walk home, leaving every demon, every duppy, every shameful summer sin on the ground there on Eastern Parkway.

And people will always point to the violence that transpires every year up there without considering the circumstances. Every young man that calls the streets home finds themselves on Eastern Parkway every first Monday of September. They, too, come for the rhythm and the people and the process, and when you put misdirected, frustrated, undiagnosed and troubled youth from across the borough all on the same parkway, current beefs, past beefs and street vindication gets revisited. I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t be who I am if I only painted the pretty side of the easel, because you and I both know that there is another side. But you can’t blame the carnival for that side. We have to blame ourselves for ignoring these kids for the other 11 months and 29 days out the year.

They need our love, too, you know. I, for one, grew up finding lessons in the bad, reminders of what not to do, who not to be, where not to tread. So, I give something to the parkway, but I take something away from it, too.

The bridge to autumn begins on Eastern Parkway, but it ends on Atlantic Avenue three

weeks later. Atlantic Antic celebrates the spirit of Brooklyn in a different way. While Eastern Parkway exposes the carnal, Atlantic Antic exposes the communal, the lesson of the whole being the sum of its parts. We shop for knickknacks and eat funnel cake, and we wear a light jacket because the autumn air carries a nip. Atlantic Antic is so much more responsible than the Labor Day Carnival, proof that the fall brings us back to center regarding our focus.

The most empowering thing you can do in your community is to spend your dollar with local businesses. This is the beauty of Atlantic Antic, our ability to galvanize as a community and support the businesses therein. Yes, it’s a festival, but it’s also an example of cooperative economics. Yes, there is dancing and music, but our presence on Atlantic Antic on the fourth Sunday in September may make the difference in a small business owner’s ability to continue making payroll. I shop as often as possible at Atlantic Antic, so once again I give something to it, but I take something away from it, too.

American poet Helen Hunt Jackson said, “By all these lovely tokens, September days are here, with summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.” 30 days of blissful transition. Enjoy them!

Gold was the objective here. Spain needed it. Columbus promised to get it “by any means necessary.” Now here is the sad part, the native people may not have had horses or mules or swords, but they did have “golden earrings.”

Columbus saw those earrings, assumed that there were hidden gold mines that they didn’t tell him about, kidnapped them, made them prisoners until they gave up the source of the gold. Since they did not know, they were never released.

The man sold little native girls (nine to ten years old) to his crew for sexual slavery.

Shamelessly, he wrote about it in his log: “A hundred castellanoes are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten are now in demand.”

So far, we have a sailor who gets lost, makes innocent people slaves and pimps out little girls. What kind of man is this to celebrate, honor, revere?

Do the Mohawks in Brooklyn, the

Shinnecocks in Long Island really think that Columbus was a hero? Does anybody who knows his history think he was a hero? Why are we going along with this myth?

Many cities have decided to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. It would be cool to not celebrate it at all, but it is, after all, a paid vacation, none of us want to give that up.

Berkeley, Ca.; Seattle, Washington; Albuquerque, NM; Denver, Colorado; all have substituted something fitting for Columbus Day, even LA will start celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day in 2019.

Brooklynites are just as sensitive and intelligent as Los Angeleans. Why can’t we do that here? Mohawks and Shinnecocks have been here for over 5,000 years. Why isn’t their gift of sharing so that Europeans could survive, recognized?

he second Monday in October, Columbus Day, is coming up. Italians all over America are gearing up for parades and festivities in honor of the great Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.

October 12, 1492: We’re looking at over 500 years of celebration and not once (to my knowledge) has anybody said...”Hey, wait a second. According to his diary, this guy was a real pig. It is true that history is written by people with emotional, ethnic and biological baggage. All sorts of baggage which can leave the reader with a somewhat skewed impression. I once had a history book that said that African slaves were happy in America because they had three pots and a cot. But a diary, a diary written just for himself, well, that’s a pretty good window as to a person’s thinking.

And Senor Columbus made no bones about it. He was a product of racism, capitalism and not to mention...me too ism.

His idea of a healthy situation was to subjugate people who were kind to him. The idea of cooperation never crossed his mind.

The Arawaks of the Bahamas and possibly Arawaks all over were known for being kind, gracious, hospitable and totally into sharing. Europe at that time thought sharing was for wusses. Money was king.

Capitalism, the love of a profit, was strong; socialism, the love of a society sharing, was weak.

Look at this quote from Columbus’ handwritten diary: “They ... brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks’ bells. They willingly traded everything they owned... They were well-built with good bodies and handsome features....

They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane... They would make fine servants.... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.”

This is a log in Columbus’ book. Howard Zinn quotes it in his book, “The Peoples History of the United States.”

Usually, the story is about how King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gave Columbus three boats to go discover the New World, find a Western sea route to Asia and see just how flat the earth was. The fact that this journey was a bone-crushing failure is seldom discussed.

Although Columbus was aiming for Asia, he hit the Bahamas, then Cuba, then Trinidad, South America, Central America, Panama, many places...but not Asia and not what we call the good ole US of A today.

So, it is on the shores of the Bahamas that Columbus meets up with the kindly indigenous people. According to Zinn: “Arawak men and women, naked, tawny and full of wonder, emerged from their villages onto the island’s beaches and swam out to get a closer look at the strange big boat. When Columbus and his sailors came ashore, carrying swords, speaking oddly, the Arawaks ran to greet them, brought them food, water, gifts.”

So, what do you do when people are kind to you? You mistake it for weakness and enslave them. He sent hundreds of slaves back to Isabella. Those who stayed were controlled by violence and torture.

Another excerpt from Columbus’ log says: “ As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts. “ The man was looking for gold “in these parts.” Asia was his destination and there was plenty of gold and spices, not to mention spaghetti, there. He knew that because Marco Polo brought back tons of it. If Polo could do it, so could he. El Wrongo. Polo went to Asia by land, not by sea. Columbus

Educators & Parents Must Act to Stop All Types of School Bullying ■■

M

any people are familiar with the more physically aggressive and verbally threating forms of bullying that can take place far too often in our schools. But other less-easily-identifiable forms of bullying, including a “social media” type, can produce very severe and painful emotional scars on young people. These types of bullying acts are further problematic because the young victims will often find it very difficult to ask for help, in part due to their inability to articulate what is happening to them.

First, some full disclosure and an explanation. I have spent close to 40 years of my life working in some capacity with school children, I love them, and loved every moment of my professional life. But truth be told, in many situations young people were not as sensitive and compassionate with their fellow students, or school staff members, as they could have been. This was not necessarily a sign of a moral defect, but rather it had more to do with the challenges of “growing-up” psychology. They were struggling with trying to figure out the adult world, while at the same time understanding who they were in that world. High school principals, in particular, are fully aware that unsanctioned student “cliques” (groups) are standard social organizations in the school’s everyday life; and sometimes these cliques can take their exclusionary practices to the level of hurtful meanness.

Educators must be sensitive to the power of these unofficial “social behaviors” in schools and how they can often stress out young people, even to the point of them thinking and possibly acting in very destructive ways toward themselves and others. The first step is for educators and parents to not dismiss the emotional concerns (i.e., isolation, exclusion, being made fun of…) expressed by young people.

“Not having to pay bills” (I heard this from a lot of parents) does not mean that a young person is living a worry-free and a blissfilled life. Adults only need to honestly look back at their own childhood days and review all of the anxiety, hurt, disappointments

and feelings of rejection they may have experienced; those feelings were real and painful.

Principals must analyze and take serious strategic action against all forms of bullying.

Particularly, since Mr. Trump has made “bullying” a national policy. And don’t think for a moment that school students are unaware of our nation’s current bullying environment.

Imagine what the schoolmates of Mexican, Latino or Muslim students are thinking (or those Mexican, Latino and Muslim students themselves) when they constantly hear: “We need to ‘ban’ or build a wall to keep ‘those people’ out of our country!”

Attention and protection must be given to that student who is: teased for not having the latest “whatever;” that student standing alone in the school playground; the student sitting alone in the lunchroom (and “alone” could

be a student sitting at a table full of students who are interacting with each other and not them); students who are poor; those who emigrated from another country. The children who don’t fit the limited societal definitions of “masculinity” and “femininity.” Black, Latino or Asian students.

Students with same-sex parents. Those students living with severe/chronic physical disabilities and illnesses. The students who don’t fall into our very narrowly assigned racial categories. Students who are

“cafeteria-shamed” because they receive a “free lunch” (which technically all students in some way receive since all public school lunches, free or paid, are subsidized by the government!), a practitioner of a non-Christian religious faith, LGBTQ students. And a concern for me, Black and Latino students (especially boys) who are teased about “talking (thinking?) white,” “acting/being smart” or wanting to be high-academic achievers.

Superintendents, principals, assistant principals and teachers all have a role in ending all forms of behavioral or verbal bullying, no matter who is the perpetrator, or how “subtle,” covertly and clandestinely it is delivered.

Unfortunately (and some of my education friends might not like this), some bullying acts inflicted on students can sometimes be delivered by educators, in both our school administrators and teacher ranks.

Parents, your job (and don’t fall off in middle & high school!) is to have conversations, not one- or two-word Q & A sessions about what is going on with your child’s school life. And then reach out to the school if you hear something that sounds

“not right.” School administrators, you are obligated to take those calls, and to take them seriously. As a principal, I was able to successfully intervene in some very dangerous situations (e.g., students contemplating suicide, potential “runaways,” victims of abuse, alcohol/drug addiction problems, etc.) because of a parent call, or a parent calling on behalf of their child’s friend or schoolmate.

K-12 schools can be the most wonderful life-changing-enhancing places in a young person’s life. Or a school can be “pure hell” if there are no adults who will advocate for that child’s physical and emotional well-being. #bethatadult!

NYC Students Still Outperfom NY State on English Exams And Are Closing the Gap in Math

EW YORK––Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza today announced that New York City students are outperforming New York State on State English exams, and are continuing to close the gap with the State on State math exams.

New York City students outperformed the State on State English exams for the first time ever in 2016 and have now done so for three years in a row.

In 2018, 46.7 percent of New York City students met proficiency standards in English and 42.7 percent of students met the standards in math. By comparison, 45.2 percent of all New York State students met proficiency standards in English and 44.5 percent met proficiency standards in math.

“We came into office to shake the foundation of a system that neglected too many students, parents, teachers and schools,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We now have a school system that is steadily improving before

our eyes. We’ve seen steady gains across our students’ State math and English exams, proving that equity and excellence go hand in hand. I salute our students on their progress.”

“Our students’ performance on these exams is one measure of the strength of New York City schools – the hard work of our students, and the dedication and support of our teachers, staff, and families,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza. “Along with record-high graduation and college enrollment rates and progress on our Equity & Excellence for All agenda, these scores are indicative of the sustained progress we have made in classrooms, schools and districts across all five boroughs. We have much more work to do to close opportunity gaps, and we will continue our push to deliver the equitable and excellent education that every New York City public school student deserves.”

New York City schools are the strongest they’ve ever been across multiple measures, including:

• The highest-ever graduation rate – 74.3 percent of the Class of 2017.

• The lowest-ever dropout rate – 7.8 percent of the Class of 2017.

The highest-ever postsecondary enrollment rate – 57 percent of the Class of 2016.

The highest-ever number of New York City students taking and passing Advanced Placement exams and the SAT exam.

New York City students’ performance on State exams goes hand-in-hand with these gains, and reflects investments in the Mayor and Chancellor’s Equity and Excellence for All agenda.

Starting in spring 2018, the New York State Education Department reduced the number of testing days from three to two per exam. Because of this and other changes to the State exams in 2018, the New York State Education Department has advised that 2018 results should not be compared to 2017 results. Therefore, our key findings focus on overall proficiency comparisons

between New York City students and their peers in the rest of the State, because all students took the same exams in 2018: • New York City students outperformed New York State on English, with 46.7 percent of students meeting proficiency standards, compared to the State’s 45.2 percent. This is the third year in a row that New York City students have outperformed their State peers on English, with the difference increasing each time. This year, the difference increased from 0.8 percentage points to 1.5 percentage points.

• New York City students continued to close the gap with New York State on the State math exams, from 2.4 percentage points to 1.8 percentage points.

Prior to the test revisions, New York City students’ English and math results had increased every year for four years. English results improved in each of the City’s 32 community school districts for four years in a row.

Minister Tony Muhammad to be Honored for Efforts to End Gang Violence and Promote Peace

he Bedford-Stuyvesant Museum of African Art (BSMAA) will honor Minister Tony Muhammad during its Fourth Annual Awards Event on October 13, 2018. Minister Muhammad, who is the Western Regional Representative for the Nation of Islam in Los Angeles, has dedicated his life to tackling gang violence and promoting peace and unity.

Minister Muhammad co-founded the United in Peace Movement in the streets of South Central Los Angeles. The United in Peace Movement has brought together rival gangs for Peace Rides in cars and on motorcycles through strife-ridden neighborhoods. Their efforts have culminated in a historic truce between two of Los Angeles’ most violent gangs: the Crips and the Bloods, who signed a peace truce. Los Angeles law enforcement officials have noted that gang violent has dropped.

Minister Muhammad’s efforts have saved thousands of young lives.

Ruth E. Carter, who designed the costumes for the Black Panther movie, will also be honored. The BSMAA Humanitarian Awards Selection Committee selected Ms. Carter noting that she provided her distinctive designs for 45 movies that have portrayed historical African-American figures with dignity.

James Shaw, Jr., who has been hailed as a hero for wrestling a rifle from a crazed gunman at a Tennessee Waffle House that killed four people, will also be honored.

Shaw sustained a gunshot wound to the elbow and suffered burns to his hands after wrestling the rifle from the gunman. According to law enforcement officials, Shaw’s heroism prevented more casualties.

Despite being showered with a media blitz and accolades from the public for his heroism, Shaw

started a GoFundMe Campaign hours after the shooting. He has managed to raise more than $400,000 for the victims’ families.

Sello Hatang, the Chief Executive of the South-based Nelson Mandela Foundation, has approved BSMAA’s annual event as the Madiba Humanitarian Award: Celebrating the Legacy of Nelson Mandela. The theme is “Education: A Forceful Weapon Empowering the World’s Children.” Both Kevinee Gilmore and Rob Garris, who grew up in the foster care system, will be honored. They are tireless advocates bringing attention to the

problems foster children experience once they age out of the system after turning 18 years old. These children are often thrown into the streets without any support systems.

Performances from African dance companies and local performing artists will highlight the evening.

Cosby’s in Jail, a 3rd Kavanaugh Accuser Comes Forth, a 4th is in the Wings

ho says it’s too early for a basketball article? Yes, we have the Yankees preparing for the Wild Card game on October 3 and we have football approaching Week 4.

Heck, Tiger Woods won his first tournament in five years over the weekend. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a sports fan as we kick off the fall season, but when basketball is set to return in about a month and a half, allow me to give you the local team story with a big potential ahead perhaps. I’m talking about the Brooklyn Nets.

By now, it is well-documented the mess that former Nets General Manager Billy King created when he traded away about 4 years of the team’s future in a gamble for a championship run about 5 years ago.

With media that’s coming and going this past week, the whispers have already begun when it comes to the Nets and them being “buyers” when it comes to the free agent class of 2019. As far as that goes, it appears the team as a whole is simply trying to simmer down that noise and focus on taking small steps in getting better as far as the present goes. The team is looking forward to improving from their 2017-18 campaign in which they had a win-loss total of 28-54. Why was there more buzz at the team’s media day than usual? Next summer, the team will have enough salary cap space to sign two key players to max contracts.

The team will be entering its third season under the Sean Marks (General Manager) and Kenny Atkinson (Head Coach) regime. The team has won a total of 48 games out of 164, which included an eight-win increase last year (20 to 28). This current Brooklyn roster is quite young. In fact, the team has 10 of their 19 players with 5 years or less NBA experience, including 5 players who are rookies. During this off-season, the team did tweak the look of the roster just a bit by adding veterans such as Kenneth Faried, Jared Dudley, Ed Davis and Shabazz Napier. Brooklyn will also be bringing back point guards DeAngelo Russell and Spencer Dinwiddle, who thrived as the team’s best player during Russell’s absence. The Nets are projected to have anywhere from $50 to $70 million in cap space next year and on top of that, the team has a first-round pick and perhaps a pick from Denver if they fall from 13-30 in the draft order. The team also has two second-round picks. I think it’s pretty safe to say although there are still growing pains to deal with during the upcoming season, if the front office continues hitting some right buttons as far as bringing players that can mesh well together, we can be talking about another step forward for the team.

That will only lead to more winning and a brighter future.

Sports Notes: (Football) The Jets will try to dust themselves off after a tough loss to the Cleveland Browns. The team will look to snap their 2-game losing skid, but it will not be easy as they face a very good Jacksonville Jaguars team. The New York Giants picked up their first win of the season defeating the Houston Texans. The team will head back home to face Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.

allen icon Bill Cosby’s three-toten-year prison sentence, delivered on September 24th, left some New Yorkers shocked and others relieved. He was found guilty of three counts of aggravated sexual assault on Andrea Constand, former director of the women’s basketball team at Temple University. Speculation had been that he might walk with probation and no time to serve, in consideration of his age and ill health. But the sentence delivered by Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill means that he will spend at minimum, three years behind bars. And his accusers are vowing to show up at that parole hearing and any that may come after.

“No one is above the law, and no one should be treated differently or disproportionately,” said Judge O’Neill in comments after the verdict.

Although his lawyers plan to appeal, Cosby went immediately to prison, where he will have to await any subsequent trial. He’ll undergo monthly counseling and register as a sexually violent predator, so that in the event he is someday released, neighbors and schools in his area will be aware of the nature of his conviction.

Cosby escaped a harsher sentence that his accusers say he deserves, because he faced only one of them, Constand, in court. She says he drugged and sexually assaulted her in 2004. The statute of limitations had run out by only a few months for artist and activist Lili Bernard, who says Cosby raped her in the ‘90s while mentoring her for an appearance on The Cosby Show. She’s one of his more vocal rape/sexual assault accusers and expressed satisfaction with the sentence in an interview on Democracy Now! the next day.

“That torrential rain that was pouring down as we emerged from the courthouse was so serendipitous because Judge Steven O’Neill, he delivered a tsunami of a sentence! I view it not only as something that signaled a shift in rape culture away from misogyny and toward believing and valuing women, but I also see it as an absolute mark in terms of gender equality and the history of women’s rights.”

In contrast, Cosby spokesperson Andrew Wyatt believes that Cosby should be subject to neither accusation nor prosecution.

“They persecuted Jesus and look what happened,” he said to reporters outside the court after the verdict.

This verdict was a long time coming, as the trial follows an earlier one, which ended in a hung jury in 2017. Judge O’Neill, who presided over the first trial as well, then allowed one of the 60 women who came forward to charge Cosby to testify during that trail. For the trial that just ended, he allowed five.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh now has a third woman officially accusing him of being at least present when gang rapes occurred. Washington resident Julie Swetnick, says on record, in a sworn affidavit, that while a high school student in the early 1980s, Kavanaugh, along with others, spiked drinks with alcohol and/ or drugs at house parties to “cause girls to lose inhibitions and their ability to say ‘No.’ “She said Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge did this so the girls “could then be ‘gang raped’ in a side room or bedroom by a ‘train’ of numerous boys.

“I became the victim” of one such rape, “where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present,” says Swetnick in the affidavit.

Her attorney, Michael Avenatti, who also represents Trump’s alleged pay-for-play mistress, Stormy Daniels, is representing Swetnick.

On Monday, the Montgomery County Sentinel reported that authorities in Montgomery County, Maryland are looking into a fourth potential allegation of assault naming Kavanaugh. “While investigators weren’t specific and spoke on background, they said they are looking at allegations against Kavanaugh during his senior year in high school after an anonymous witness came forward this weekend,” says the Sentinel.

Kavanuagh’s initial accuser testifies today before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Christine Blasey Ford says he covered her mouth, held her down and thrust himself on

top of her at a party during their high school days. Although she does not want to see Kavanaugh serving on the nation’s highest court, she was reluctant to come forward, and as feared, has received death threats and had to move her family out of their home. The Senate Judiciary Committee vows to proceed with a vote on Kavanaugh’s appointment on Friday, which some lawmakers and news analysts say renders Blasey Ford’s testimony before the body a sham of a hearing.

A second accuser Deborah Ramirez, came forward over a week ago to charge that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her as well, thrusting his penis in her face at a party in college. The Committee has not returned her attorney John Clune’s calls requesting that she be allowed to testify. He says that although she would prefer an FBI investigation, as Blaisey Ford wanted, she would likely testify without it.

Brett Kavanaugh has a high-profile supporter in Donald Trump, whose consistent and vocal defense of the nominee is unprecedented for a sitting president in U.S. history. He recently opined on the character of Kavanaugh’s accuser, the veracity of her account, and the supposed machinations of the Democratic Party in the matter – all without any investigation being done. His statement overshadowed a session he was supposed to be having with the U.N. delegate from Colombia.

The film addresses the intense and demoralizing struggle of college athletes and posits that their plight is a quiet human rights crisis. Through following four young men, one in high school being courted by recruiters, two playing collegiate sports and one who graduated, we get a complete picture of an industry the filmmakers charge chews these players up and spits them out, with only 300 of the 90,000 players making it to the NBA or the NFL. Among those featured are Mike Shaw who played at the University of Illinois and Bradley University New Jersey, high school basketball star Nick Richards, and Shamar Graves, a former wide receiver at Rutgers University and Silas Nacita, who played at Baylor University.

Obaid-Chinoy, a Pakistani filmmaker who has made documentaries around the world, is the recipient of two Academy Awards and six Emmys. She was approached by people who’d seen her human rights-related docs and thought this issue was in line with her interests. After thinking about it for a bit, she agreed. She co-directed the film with Trish Dalton and they spent two years investigating the college sports industry and the price athletes play to be part of what, for them, is a losing game, no matter the scores. LeBron James was brought in as a producer and has long held these convictions about college ball.

“The NCAA is corrupt,” James said a few years back. “I don’t know all the rules and regulations about it, but I do know what five–star athletes bring to a campus both in basketball and football. I know how much these college coaches get paid. I know how much these colleges are gaining off these kids.”

“Some of these kids are being recruited as

early as age 12,” said Obaid-Chinoy. “They are told they are going to make it big, going to be the next LeBron James. Then, if you get injured, that’s it. If the coach who recruited you moves away and the next coach that comes to the college doesn’t like you, you’re benched.”

She says that one former player, Shamar Graves, works five jobs, 18- hour days, seven days a week, as a bouncer, a shoe store-clerk, a part-time teacher, etc. All the top universities courted him, and he played in college, expecting to make it into the NFL. But he got injured and had no Plan B, says the filmmaker, because no on ever counseled him to have one.

NBA player Carmelo Anthony has spoken on this issue before.

“I think college basketball players — college athletes, period — should be compensated,” he said. “You have to think about a 16-year-old kid, 17-year-old kid going to college. Yeah, they get a free education if they get a scholarship, but how are they surviving on those campuses? A lot of them can’t afford food.”

Celebrating the African Ancestral Heritage Remember the Journey October 4-5, 2018 In 1991, skeletal remains were discovered and unearthed during excavations for a federal building in lower Manhattan. After eighteen months of struggle by the descendants of enslaved and free Africans, the General Services Administration ensued to have the 419 excavated remains biologically and culturally studied by scientists at Howard University, to be re-interred in their original resting place on October 4, 2003.

On October 5, 2007, the outdoor memorial of the National Monument was dedicated and now stands as a testament to a tragic history and a victory for not only descendant communities, but for people and nations everywhere.
