Chancellor Carmеn Farina holds Town Hall ■■

District 16 Community Education Council hosted its first Town Hall meeting with NYC Chancellor Carmen Farina on September 14th at M.S. 267, which drew approximately 250 people.

To access the auditorium, attendees passed through table displays of various community organizations ready to partner with interested schools: The Sankofa Global Project, Kings of New York Marching Band, Digital Girl, Not Just Hoops and Foot Soldiers among several others.

Once the meeting began, Farina shared her initiatives for the year. She discussed the need to rebrand schools by inviting the community, including local businesses to see schools’ stellar programs and feel their positive energy. She also provided several strategies for increasing enrollment by suggesting schools provide brochures and administrative presence at the Welcome Center and consider implementing a Korean World Culture Program. The chancellor will guarantee residence eligibility for any Korean child interested in enrolling. She also emphasized the need for schools to focus on striving to be the best: best student, teacher and principal. Breaking down walls

Supt. Rahesha Amon-Harrison, NYC Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina, NeQuan C. McLean, Pres. of C.E.C. 16 between superintendents is another Farina priority by encouraging collaboration among schools. She promoted sharing resources such as Advanced Placement courses or adopting successful programs from other districts, providing Thomas Edison’s drone program as an example. One final initiative is developing the teachers that schools will need in the future to avoid teacher shortages.

At 6:55pm, Farina opened the floor for the reading of the pre-written questions by Superintendent Rahesha Amon-Harrison. Individuals either submitted their questions online or wrote them on an index card upon arrival. The chancellor provided her actions, perspective, advice or plans concerning the topics below.

Homelessness: In many cases, families are merely doubling up, but for children in shelters we are providing busing services, guidance counselors, libraries and homework help. We are partnering with CBOs who demonstrate excellence and meeting needs of this population.

Creation of selective programs: “Find me a high school and we’ll find a program”, but keep in mind our Advanced Placement course initiative which increased by 50% and achieved the same goal since AP-certified teachers provide more rigorous courses.

High school co-location in elementary schools: This occurred before I was chancellor but is not the wave of the future.

Plans for increasing after-school funding: The larger the student population, the larger the budget. However, principals should look to exercising more creativity by partnering with other schools with after-school programs and working together to share resources.

Plans to prepare District 16 students with 21st century skills: Our Summer in the City programs show we’re already doing that. We also had programs for parents, but we need a critical mass of parents to attend. We even have schools where students are learning coding in the first grade.

Single-sex literacy programs: Several schools are experimenting with the idea. We have mother-daughter and father-son book clubs, but skills of the 21st century entail getting along with others, conflict resolution and the ability to read.

Roadmap for this district’s success: That is the responsibility of the CEC. By giving you Superintendent Rahesha Amon-Harrison, I have given you the best.

onald Trump is such an absurdly powerful character, that there is a risk of his changing the nature of what we expect in a president, that some might grow up thinking his angry and threatening appearance at the United Nations was normal occurrence. I suggest going to YouTube and take a moment to watch Barack Obama in his first appearance to the UN. With the applause interruptions, it is to be reminded of where the bar has been set on how to deliver an address on the world stage and what presidential majesty is supposed to look and sound like.

The sanity, the humanity, the acknowledgement of challenges, the need for coalitions, the hopefulness are all themes lost on the current President of the United States. Apparently, presidential aide Stephen Miller had a hand in writing the script and you can hear his nasty, grating voice throughout as the president embarrassed the nation and raised concerns around the world by reading whatever is placed in front of him. And if he is able to be removed from office for reasons of delusions or collusion, waiting in the wings is the blandly sinister Vice President Mike Spence, ready to enact all of the anti-climate, anti-people agenda but without the overt craziness, instability and Tweets of Trump.

The only hope for a regime change is to elect a Democratic House of Representatives, impeach both Trump and Pence, and have the Democratic Speaker assume the office.

But that’s not likely as Senate Republicans wouldn’t go along and Trump supporters would probably make a fuss. So we’re left to fighting the Trump Administration state by state and city by city, electing the best we can on the local level and fighting hardest against voter suppression.

Republicans Determined to Rip Up Affordable Care Act The Republican determination to remove health care from millions of people is an effort that just won’t die. The Times reported

Former President Barack Obama at his 2009 appearance before the UN General Assembly. that the current incarnation will take $700 billion out of the health care system and the Republicans say that will make it better. That’s not savings, that’s less care, longer illnesses and more dying. And the money they take out of the system by taking away health care, they then give to the nation’s richest, including themselves, their friends and those they want to be friends with. It is perverse and as the Times calls it, “mean”.

And they insist on going forward despite the objections of over 50 medical associations, including the American Medical Association, AARP, American Hospital Association & Federation of American Hospitals, American Cancer Society, Cancer Action Network, American Health Care Association (AHCA), America’s Essential Hospitals and America’s Hospitals and Health Systems. But as far as the Republicans are concerned, they only represent patients and the people who directly deliver health care. They can’t be expected to have an affinity for the politics and bought loyalties of the health care system.

Findings from Comptroller’s Report on Bed-Stuy

he number of jobs in Bedford-Stuyvesant increased by 45 percent since the end of the recession in 2009 to a record 17,000 jobs in 2016. The retail trade and the leisure and hospitality sectors registered the largest job gains, with each sector accounting for about one-fifth of the 5,300 jobs added since 2009. Job growth has accelerated since 2010 and has exceeded 7 percent in each of the past four years.

The number of businesses increased by 73 percent between 2000 and 2015, which was the fourth-fastest rate of growth among the 55 neighborhoods in New York City. In 2015, there were a record 1,910 businesses and almost three-quarters were small businesses with fewer than five employees.

The population increased by 25 percent between 2000 and 2015 to 150,900, more than three times faster than the citywide rate of growth. The ethnic and racial mix of the population has undergone significant change in the past 15 years as the neighborhood has attracted new residents.

Many of the new residents are immigrants, white or young, and are likely to have higher household incomes than long-term residents. New residents had a median household income of $50,200, compared to $28,000 for long-term residents. New residents comprised one-third of the households.

There were 14,000 senior residents living in Bedford-Stuyvesant in 2015. Their household incomes were only $25,500, and 42 percent of them relied on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for food assistance.

This segment of the population accounted for 29 percent of Bedford-Stuyvesant’s population, the third-highest concentration among the city’s 55 census-defined neighborhoods.

Housing affordability is a serious problem, even though nearly two-thirds of all apartments are either rent-stabilized or public housing. The median monthly rent increased by 77 percent between 2005 and 2015, rising to $1,230. In 2015, 55 percent of all households spent at least 30 percent of their income on rent and nearly one-third devoted more than half.

Median home values (for one-, twoand three-family homes and condominiums) have risen sharply in recent years,

from $484,800 in 2005 to $779,400 in 2015.

The 61 percent increase was nearly twice as fast as the growth in Brooklyn overall.

Residents suffer from above-average incidences of chronic health problems.

According to the New York City Department of Health, of the 59 community districts in New York City, Bedford-Stuyvesant ranks in the top 10 for smoking, diabetes, new HIV diagnoses, obesity, stroke, mental health, alcohol hospitalizations and adult hospitalizations for asthma. The average time patients waited in the emergency room before being seen for a diagnostic evaluation by a health care professional at area hospitals was higher than the statewide average.

Other findings in DiNapoli’s report include:

The share of households living in poverty has hovered at about 30 percent since the end of the recession, significantly higher than the citywide poverty rate (19 percent). Moreover, the number of households in poverty increased by 13 percent from 13,800 in 2009 to 15,600 in 2015.

One-third of all households receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and nearly half receive Medicaid benefits. These programs are at risk of federal budget cuts.

In 2015, less than one-fifth of longterm residents had at least a bachelor’s degree, compared with 46 percent of new residents.

More than 20,400 people live in public housing apartments under the control of the New York City Housing Authority, the highest number in any community district in Brooklyn.

Violent crime fell by 44 percent between 2000 and 2016, but crime remains a concern.

School District 16, which covers most of the neighborhood, has one of the highest concentrations of homeless students in New York City.

Traditional elementary and middle schools have shown notable improvement in English and math proficiency, but they still lag behind the citywide averages.

he Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood has experienced strong population, business and job growth in recent years, according to a report released today by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

“Bedford-Stuyvesant is undergoing an economic resurgence, with record numbers of businesses and jobs, but the benefits have not been shared by all residents,” DiNapoli said. “Today’s report shows how far BedfordStuyvesant has come, but it also shows the challenges that remain.”

“As a lifelong resident of BedfordStuyvesant, its elected representative and Chairman of the New York City Council’s Committee on Small Business, I am very grateful for the comptroller’s economic report on Bed-Stuy,” said Council member Robert Cornegy. “The economic growth highlighted in this snapshot shows that our long-term vision for a prosperous BedfordStuyvesant is coming to fruition. It has required collaboration and problem-solving across multiple sectors over the course of the past five to 10 years and I am encouraged by the progress evident in this report. There remains work to be done to address ongoing hurdles related to poverty, affordable housing and health care, but I am confident that with the partnerships we have created and the business and private sector job growth we are experiencing, we can overcome these

POTUS 45 Wonders never cease. Last week, President Trump had an audience with US Senator Tim Scott to discuss improving relations with Black America.

Trump’s address to the UN was Tim Scott pretty bellicose.

He threatened to “totally destroy North Korea”. He made some not so veiled threats to Iran and Venezuela. e threateTrump will lunch with African heads of state, in town for the UN session. Will he explain the new policy of US foreign aid to Africa, giving countries military aid in lieu of humanitarian aid. Mr. President, how about substantial aid to Caribbean countries, vanquished by Hurricane Irma?

HURRICANE SEASON Not so for the Caribbean, but the family of islands sandwiched between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Irma leveled Barbuda, destroying 94% of its infrastructure and forcing Prime Minister Gaston Browne to evacuate all 1600 Barbudans to Antigua, its twin island. Irma also wreaked havoc on the islands of St. Maarten, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the American Virgin Islands. British billionaire Richard Branson, Gaston Browne who owns an island in the BVI, said that the US, France, Britain and the Netherlands needs to develop a Marshall Plan. That makes sense. I would add that the Chinese should contribute to that plan considering their enormous financial interests throughout the Caribbean.

ARTS/CULTURE THEATER: The National Black Theatre and Hi-Arts co-produce the world premiere of THE PECULIAR PATRIOT, a one-woman multimedia drama, an expose of the prison industrial complex, which is written and performed by Liza Jessie Peterson, that opened on September 13 to rave notices.

There is no stopping this onslaught. Nature will keep producing these hurricane winds because that is what it does, given the new warmth of air and water. Therefore, this is the new normal, with the threat of a series of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes sweeping across

Rebuilding in the usual hurricane path would have to be done knowing that reality and family homes will need to be capable of withstanding regular hits of 150-175mph winds and rain. And that’s going to be hard to contemplate when you’re standing in front of a home destroyed, with a lifetime in wreckage all around and having only the clothes on your back to start with. This is what a changing climate looks like up close, and as the suffering is being mirrored in climate events around the world, we are led by climate change deniers whose immorality we must fight on every front.

More Than Mere Playgrounds ■■

oday, I saw some pictures of the damage that Hurricane Irma caused last week during its terror into the Caribbean Islands. In St. Maarten, dozens of yachts and boats of varying sizes laid atop one another as if some gigantic child had dumped a pile of his favorite toy ships along the shore in his sandbox. I saw a progression picture of the island of Virgin Gorda that revealed that when the winds of Irma tore through, basically all of the green foliage was stripped away, leaving it brown and virtually barren. And, for the first time in 300 years, there isn’t one person that is currently inhabiting the island of Barbuda.

The island has been completely destroyed, every structure flattened; of its 1,800 residents, only abandoned pets and livestock remain.

The Caribbean is the most tourism-dependent region in the world; 27 million visitors a year, spending $29.5 billion dollars (a lot of that money leaks out of the region in the form of international businesses that cater to the region’s tourism without actually being of the region). Almost half of the visitors are American. While for many of our community, the Caribbean represents home, a place of birth or an origin of their family roots, a bigger percentage of Americans view the Caribbean as a playground, a destination that’s forever sunny and warm where you can jet-ski and snorkel, and visit on a cruise ship and always feel welcomed. And if you should happen to wander off of the ship, natives are always in the marketplace willing to sell you a souvenir or even to braid your hair with beads. And if you stay at one of those nice resorts, you can enjoy a chartered tour of the island followed by a spa day, and later you can experience some of the island’s best cuisine for dinner. No matter the island, the supreme attention on service to international visitors seems to be the same.

Americans, we love to watch train wrecks. Isn’t rubbernecking in traffic always due to an accident on the other side of the highway, people simply slowing up to have

a look at the carnage? During hurricane season, weathermen thoroughly enjoy the drama associated with having to report and forecast a hurricane for television. Where is it going to land? How fast are the winds moving? Our local meteorologists tell us everything we need to know about these storms, even if they have absolutely no chance of reaching us. If you tell us that a hurricane has formed, we will follow your reporting and forecasting as that hurricane travels and develops, just waiting to see if it is going to make landfall somewhere against the East Coast. I think that because we rarely get to experience that kind of inclement weather, New Yorkers have this thing with hurricanes that we secretly root for one of them to make that peculiar turn towards the north, just enough to bring us in on all of the fun.

However, in most cases, standing in between America’s shores and the hurricanes bearing down on them, are the Caribbean Islands. And so, by the time a system reaches Florida, Louisiana or the Texas Panhandle, in most cases they have already left a path of destruction on its way here. When Texas was battered by Hurricane Harvey, many of our celebrities went to work immediately to raise money for the victims of the hurricane.

Houston Texans lineman J.J. Watt was able to raise over $30 million for Harvey survivors. America always finds ways to pony-up the resources to help in the aftermath of a natural disaster in our backyard.

But what about the disasters that happen in our playgrounds?

Those islands destroyed by Irma, their economy depends heavily on the tourism industry. Indirectly, more than 2 million jobs are created due to tourism in the region.

And, unlike the States, where even the most vicious storm cannot completely destroy our industrial infrastructure, a Category 5 hurricane can steal an island’s prosperity, leaving the residents unable to fend for themselves. That clear water and pink sand that we enjoy on our holidays means nothing when an island’s infrastructure is ruined, destroyed beyond repair. And the people have to deal with losing everything. And

unlike the citizens here, they don’t have rich allies like Kevin Hart or J.J. Watt sending the call out to raise resources. But they should.

Those that would use the Caribbean as their destination for beauty and bacchanal should respond now in the same way that the islands respond to their needs for sun and service

during a vacation visit. Actor Robert DeNiro recently pledged to help rebuild Barbuda, citing that he loves the island as a place of refuge and wishes to give back to the island as a way to return the favors he’s experienced there as a vacationer. He has the right idea.

oney Island cousins Jedisha Johnson, 17 and Asiana Perez, 7, on left, and their family won the 1st Place Award for Family Group for their sand sculpture “Pyramid” at the 27th Annual Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest on August 19. Jedisha, who is entering Long Island University as a freshman this fall, inspired the family to create a three sided pyramid.

“Most pyramids are made with four sides,” she said. “I was inspired to put dragons on it in honor of the sculpture that our family worked on our first year in 2015.”

The Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest also had top winners in the Individual Adult and Adult Group categories. Professional and amateur sand sculptors competed for bragging rights and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes ranging from $500, $250 and $100. The judges included Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, Commissioner for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. The free family fun event was presented by Neptune/Sixth in partnership Brooklyn Community Services (BCS), Astella Development Corp and Alliance for Coney Island.

TOHMA Y. FAULKNER AWARDS The 10:00 Opening Ceremony is a special time that is set aside to honor the community’s best with the 9th Annual Tohma Y. Faulkner Community Awards.

One of the highlights of the program will be the first donation of books that were collected for the Annette M. Robinson Early Childhood Literacy Project. During Assembly Member Robinson’s community celebration last March, over four hundred books were contributed by those who attended. Assembly Member Robinson said, “As a participating parent and former staff member of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Early Childhood Development Center, I am most proud that the Annette M. Robinson Early Childhood Literacy Project will present books to the Center, in recognition of the organization’s over fifty years of providing dedicated educational services to the children of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights.”

According to this year’s Chairperson,

Stephanie Faulkner Brabham, “This is always a very moving and uplifting program.

We hope our neighbors will come out to say thank you to those champions who have done so much for Bedford-Stuyvesant. It is not too late to donate to the Literacy Project, and new books for grades pre-k to second grade will be welcomed.”

Tohma Faulkner was a true child of Bedford-Stuyvesant, and an activist in every sense of the word. The Bed-Stuy Alive! initiative grew out of her thoughts, as a way of celebrating every aspect of the history and people of her community. Sadly, Tohma passed away eight years ago, and the awards are named in her honor. A portion of Decatur Street has been co-named Tohma Y. Faulkner Way, as a means of keeping her legacy alive.

edford-Stuyvesant, one of the oldest and most prominent African-American communities in NYC, has been plagued with stories of crime and violence in its past, and now faces challenges of gentrification in the present-day. But Bed-Stuy is so much more than that – it is stories of families living and growing old in the same household

for two or even three generations, or the stories of small businesses and neighborhood churches becoming local institutions.

It’s the home of world-known artists, musicians and politicians who made a mark in the streets, halls and playgrounds of this diverse community.

Telling Our Story

In Conversation: Craig Wilder and Herb Boyd ■■

he Skylight Gallery at Restoration Plaza held a gathering of authors, editors, agents and regular literary-minded folks for a conversation between Bed-Stuy native, author and MIT Professor Craig Wilder and author Herb Boyd about Boyd’s 25th book, “Black Detroit: A People’s History of Self-Determination”, now on the New York Times’ Recommended Reading list.

Wilder began by looking for the inspiration for the book, because when reading the introduction, which he confessed he usually does not do, it seemed to be the telling of “a very personal story” wherein Boyd recounts his journey as a 4-year-old holding his mother’s hand as they left the peanut farm of Alabama and rode the train to the factory life of the city.

His mother had left the South in 1941 at the beginning of WWII and before the 1943 riots. They arrived in Detroit “making the voyage from peanut farm and cotton patch, away from the boll weevil and the Ku Klux Klan, moving away from the menace and demons in the South” to a place where Henry Ford was offering $5.00 a day and that proved to have a “magnetism” that drew on Black folks who had heard the stories, bringing them North to join others who had made the journey.

His mother had done two reconnaissance trips to get the lay of the land before she brought the family and then they “bounced around the city” while his mother worked in the factories of WWII, and when the war ended the factories closed and the men came marching home, she worked as a domestic worker for families in the suburbs. Boyd says it was “the kind of common struggle of self-preservation that was similar across the country”.

Wilder noted that the movement of the Boyd’s around Detroit “was about more than just changing apartments”. It reflected “a changing economy and an unstable economy for African-Americans after the war”.

He said, “You’re telling a very personal story about family”, that is as much Boyd’s mother’s story as his. “I think there is something important when Black scholars think about their own families in transformative ways” and he asked how those connections

And speaking of other people, Wilder asked about the “choice you make without saying it. It follows Black people--not much about white people in the book. What does that tell us about the story you tell?”

“Our history has to be told,” Boyd said, and the perspectives of Black people are needed. “Our history has to be protected, preserved and then passed on to the next generation. We have that responsibility.”

f someone were to tell me both the Jets and Giants wouldn’t have a single win combined after two weeks, I’d tell that person they are insane. Now maybe I’m not so much of a pro playing the game council, but I’d have a better shot going 0-2 during a season of Madden 2018 than to come to the realization that both of our beloved football teams have not won a game. As I reported a few weeks ago in a recent article about the New York Jets, it is a rebuilding year.

The big names such as Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Darrelle Revis, Sheldon Richardson and Calvin Pryor are gone. The team’s defense has given up big plays during their two games against the Bills and Raiders. One of the teams’ Achilles’ heel was their run defense and it continues to be an issue this year. Although the quarterback play of Josh McCown was better against Oakland than it was against Buffalo, the Jets offense has not been able to get in rhythm and as a result of that, “Gang Green” has struggled to put up points. Their defense doesn’t help any cause either giving up 66 points in two weeks. The Jets will have their first home game of the season against division rival Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

As for the Giants, it is pretty easy to say their 0-2 start is a bit of a surprise considering their great defense and their revamped receiving core. Their defense has not been as sharp throughout an entire sixty minutes in a game this year. The teams’ offense is probably the most worrisome question of all. Quarterback Eli Manning has not been sharp through two games then again, his offensive line has not been good at all. An example of that is Manning being sacked five times against the defense of the Detroit Lions last Monday night. Manning has not gotten the time to make plays with the O-line not being able to create time in the pocket for him. Let’s cut the “G-men” some slack, top wideout Odell Beckham, Jr. is still working his way back from a high ankle sprain he suffered in the preseason. Brandon Marshall, who was a ghost in the offensive game plan in last Monday’s loss to the Lions, is still learning the teams’ playbook. Manning and the Giants have a divisional opponent coming up this Sunday when they head to Philadelphia to play the Eagles.

Not to quote NBA rising star Joel Embid, but after 2 weeks for both teams, I urge both Jets and Giants fans to trust the process. It’s only been two weeks and players are still adapting physically during the season. It is too soon to press the panic button for both teams.

We’ll just have to see whether both New York teams can break out of the donut column.

rooklyn’s Bed-Stuy doesn’t always see the best executions of infill development, but new filings for 375 Stuyvesant Avenue will hopefully provide an example for others to follow. LLC is listed as the developer. The structure will rise five floors and have 7,386 square feet of residential space, to be divided amongst seven units. With a design-minded architect and an average unit size of over 1,000 square feet, condominiums would appear likely. An existing building on the site is landmarked, though there appears to be ample room to accommodate the new structure, which has yet to be reviewed by the LPC.

Metrics for measuring the success of the Gifted and Talented programs (G&T): The director of the G & T programs visited programs throughout the city and returned to the office with glowing reports for District 16’s G & T programs to the extent that she recommends others to visit. Students weren’t quietly sitting, they were interacting. If you have kids who are quiet, you’re not preparing them for the 21st century.

Facilitating District 16 “copying” what charters are doing: The copying should go both ways.

When charter school administrators observe teachers, they critique well and provide specific strategies to improve performance.

On students graduating high school but not staying in college: KIPP has initiated a program where they bring back high school graduates for two nights a week and where they share their experiences and receive support.

How do we talk about college? From the womb. The more you talk about it, the more likely it becomes a reality.

Additional comments by the Chancellor: We have to start thinking

about our schools creatively to address the needs of our students. For example, many college-bound students cannot afford to purchase the supplies needed at away schools, so we had a pop-up shower for sheets, towels and all the other supplies freshmen need.

To fill seats, one school will begin a Korean program and will outreach to the Korean community to publicize the program.

Funding for high-needs students: First, you have to reexamine how you identify high-needs students and design wider use of integrated co-teaching (ICT) learning. ICT students perform better than self-contained students.

Providing help to raise millions like established PTAs in wealthier districts: The best way to increase funding for special funding is through partnerships. Become partners and sister schools with wealthier districts. If a 100% Title One school teams up with a 100% non-Title One school, the odds increase that the proposal will be

approved.

The next segment congratulated teacher Charise Richardson for twenty-nine years of sustained enthusiasm, fight and love for students and parents, and Benjamin Lemons for his work and rapport with students and raising students’ reading levels.

Board member Marta Torres won an award for serving the board the longest—ten years.

A student bestowed a bouquet of flowers to Chancellor Farina, and the superintendent ended the meeting with a display of the newly launched District 16 Web site.

The Town Hall meeting was well-received by everyone in attendance, and the community departed the auditorium content that the district is moving in the right direction.

On Wednesday, Sept. 13th, the Stuyvesant Heights Oral History Project, gathered for their 7th annual celebration at the historic church. Honored were six community members who, as lifelong residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant, had plenty to say about the neighborhood they called home.

The Oral History Project, spearheaded by Mary Ann Monforton, a member of the Macon-MacDonough-Stuyvesant-Lewis Block Association, said the association was thinking about approaching the Citizens Committee for a grant and instead of focusing on beautification, they decided to

do something more. “We were watching before our very eyes a changing neighborhood. Also, it’s a neighborhood that was generationally very deep. And we felt like we needed to preserve some of these stories before they were gone.” She said, “We started with the old-timers in our block association in the first two years, and then we went to other block associations and got their recommendations. Then to churches, and then some of the old-timers’ friends and that is how we got our honorees”.

There was a warm and friendly feel to the event, starting with a meal and then two songs performed by jazz singer and BedStuy resident Patsy Grant.

Charla Harlow, the co-chair of the sponsoring block association, welcomed the audience as well as introduced each

Brown told us how he incorporates nearly every experience he’s every had – whether from a mountain top in a foreign country where monks lived to the Sumner (now Marcus Garvey) streets where he played or the backwoods of North Carolina where he spent summers, and Cuba, Liberia, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, the places where he found the universal “human condition” which connect us all.

This evening of inspired words and movement the dance gods and goddesses are likely to be present in the theatre.

Hopefully, there will be time for Mr. Brown and Ms. Jamison to discuss their respective dance mentors of whom Mr. Brown spoke highly.

Schoenberg told him to “speak up” and to “do what you intend to do” and “always make sure people understand where you come from.” Mitchell encouraged him to maintain fluency in adapting traditional African dance movement, but also to learn “ballet idiom.”

In addition to Ailey and Jamison, Brown is inspired by the work of Dianne McIntyre and Katherine Dunham -- all storytellers. Mr. Brown, himself, is working on a collection of essays, short stories and poetry.

In the 1990’s, Mr. Brown visited a convent on a high mountain and lived a few days in one of their cells. The small window allowed him to see sky and observe the village dance festivals far below. He said he connected to a spirit, perhaps the same one he already knew so to speak.

When Mr. Brown visited Ms. Dunham in New York City, before she passed, he told her, “I can dream and do this thing I’m doing because of you.”

She replied, “I don’t know what’s wrong with some of you young people, today. Please don’t let us down.”

Mr. Brown responded, “Miss Dunham, I’m trying not to.”

Mr. Brown, not only dances, creates dances and encourages the community to dance, he also mentors and teaches dance to would-be, emerging and established dancers ranging from six to 79. He told us, “The responsibility of the artist is to tell the truth. I am clear with all my dances and my dancing.

What I feel is what you are witnessing.”

He also said once, “What you are and what you think is a product of all the things that have gone into you; the things that are from your culture and your roots as well as the stuff from the outside. You are evidence of all that information.” And so, too, is Mr. Brown.

ilmmaker Jeannifer Brea’s much-anticipated UNREST documentary opens at The IFC Center, 323 Avenue of the Americas in Greenwich Village tomorrow September 22.

In the film, Brea, shares hard truths about her chronic fatigue illness and how she and her husband Omar Wasow cope with it.

Background: 28-year-old Jennifer Brea is working on her PhD at Harvard and soon

to be engaged to the love of her life when she gets a fever that leaves her bedridden.

The festival established the Reel Sisters Hattie McDaniel Award to honor women who are pioneers in the fields of theater, film and media. Ms. Daniel excelled as an actress and performer in all areas of media including radio and television. The Reel Sisters Trailblazer Award recognizes honorees in the film and television industry for their outstanding accomplishments and professional integrity in opening doors for other women of color.

Previous Reel Sisters award winners include Cathy Hughes, Naturi Naughton, Issa Rae, Ebony Jo-Ann, Jessica Williams, Margot B., Neema Barnette, Julie Dash, Michelle Materre, Pearl Bowser, Shola Lynch, Lonette McKee, Mahen Bonetti, Mable Haddock, Moikgantsi Kgama, Irene Cara and Kojo Ade. More on the Hattie McDaniel Award: In 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American woman to receive an Oscar. Her stellar performance in the role of Mammy in Gone With the Wind earned her an Academy Award for supporting actress.

Black audiences harshly criticized Hattie for portraying menial and stereotypical characters in films. McDaniel’s ability to add her own flair to her characters caused her to stand out when hired in the limited roles—in number and scope—that were available in Hollywood.

Born Joanna Rose, Hattie was a talented singer-songwriter and comedienne who continued working in television and theater after her Oscar win, procuring her legacy.
