t is becoming more and more obvious that we have a President of the United States that is treasonous in his support of an enemy and maintains his position by his ability to rouse the mob. And it is the mob of the street that rules today and would rule with ferocity if they win the midterm elections. But they will not win, because we will fight.

The only weapon we have is the vote and we must cast it against Republicans wherever we find them and support efforts against them wherever they are. They’ve removed the funding for cybersecurity and have given every indication they would like the Russians to help them, at least in the midterms, if they do, then the Republicans promise to take action against the Russian “meddling” in the election process.

And I do not understand the insistence and assurances that no votes were changed. The “meddling” as they call it, was overwhelmingly on the Internet with tens of millions of impressions all focused on changing the voter’s preferences for a candidate, or willingness to even vote at all.

There is no record of those results because it is the mind that was changed, the perfectly secure machine with its paper ballot which never has to be meddled with.

On the other hand, if the Democrats win the House, then everything changes. Trump will be the center of attention for Democratic House committees and subpoenas will be issued and public hearings held. Knowing this, Trump is already readying the mob by saying the Russians will meddle on behalf of the Democrats. Then when he loses, “I told you so,” will be his whine and there will be no graceful exit for this president. Only a nasty Senate fight after a House impeachment, and then hopefully we can cut to the steps of Marine One and an angry Trump giving his middle finger to the world.

To get him onto those steps will require acknowledgement of the forces working on his behalf: gerrymandering, voter suppression, Russian social media posts and the hundreds of millions in public relations and advertising supported by multibillionaires like the Koch Brothers and the Mercer family and major corporations with their six-figure lobbyists working the halls of Congress.

Our strength lies in our vote and the knowledge that every vote counts and we can help get out the vote in Brooklyn and with contacts around the country. Our collective person-to-person efforts can overwhelm the Russians and all the others.

ormer First Lady Michelle Obama has not retired from the global community. This month, she is using her presence and voice to launch a national campaign to get the vote out for the upcoming mid-term elections.

Last Thursday it was announced that Michelle Obama is co-chairing the new non-profit "When We All Vote."

The organization is ramping up the effort to have more voter registered.

Mrs. Obama said women should stand up for excellence, not mediocrity. Mrs. Obama’s intellect,

oon, housing costs will be out of reach for households with incomes below $75,000.

On Tuesday, July 24, this reporter selected the outdoor seating near the Q/B Parkside Avenue subway station to query the public about rent and, in general, how they are living. Fiftyfive-year-old Shakima (last name withheld) was willing to answer five questions. Shakima lives in a 3-story SRO on Winthrop Street. She moved there on November 20, 2017. She had been incarcerated and once released, chose to live on the streets rather than in a women’s shelter.

Subsequently, she moved into the SRO. “I would prefer to find my own housing and job but, instead, I must rely on my case manager because the information is on the Internet. I don’t have access to the Internet and I’m not schooled on how to get online.” This lady did not know that public libraries were outfitted with PCs and she could be taught to use a computer to meet many needs.

She is pleased with the conditions at her SRO, however, she recognizes there’s a lack of participation by the SRO tenants. Shakima admits that she’s not participating. She is most interested in maintaining her relationship with her husband.

She enjoys a common law marriage. Her husband

lives in another part of town and was traveling by subway to meet her during the time of this interview.

When asked about her rent, Shakima explained that HASA pays her rent directly to the SRO. So she does not know how much her rent is or whether it has increased. When queried about Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) and Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE), she stated that she did not know about the programs. Shakima said she would like to be doing more for herself. “People are choosing the streets because some shelters are dangerous. It feels safer living on the streets than living in a shelter.”

We talked to another woman who lives in Bergen Beach to be near her adult son. She explained that, “A lot of people have to move because the rent is a lot. It is anywhere from $3,000 to $4,000 per month.”

She travels to the sitting area in front of the Q/B Parkside Avenue station to socialize. She lives in a building containing 60 units. In the five years she has been there, she has not had her rent increased. She does not know of an active tenant association. “We used to have tenant meetings, but they stopped a while ago. The building management did not explain but I know the tenants were too busy to turn up.”

Ms. Wyndene Foster is married and has been

living in a NYCHA building in Carnarsie for seven years. Mr. Foster works at Barclays Center.

Both husband and wife receive SSI. When they first moved in 2011, the rent was approximately $125.00. Currently, it is more than $400 due to the husband’s employment. They receive one-year leases and every December they are required to report their income. “Depending upon the income, our rent is increased or decreased.”

Daphne Joseph has been a resident of East New York since 1993. She told us: “I have friends looking for a place to live and they tell me about one-bedroom apartments going for $1,800 per month! Can you imagine a one-bedroom going for $1,800 in East New York? No one should ever have to pay $1,800 for a three-bedroom apartment much less a one-bedroom place. How do you eat or travel?” Mrs. Joseph added that, “Some places are requiring proof that one’s annual income is at least $60,000.”

It was Mr. Joseph who was informed about New York Community for Change (previously known as ACORN). In 1991, Mr. Joseph assured his wife that, “In five years the place will not look the same.” What drew them to that part of East New York was the promise, “You can have your own home,” “Learn sweat equity and homeownership.” Mrs. Joseph affirmed that they did perform sweat equity to acquire their home.

Their housing cost was $305.60 in 1991. In 2018, it's $605.

Rent Increase Exemptions

T

he Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE), also known as the NYC Rent Freeze Program, freezes the rent for head-of-household seniors 62 and older who live in rent-regulated apartments. In order to satisfy the income eligibility requirement, the senior’s household income must be $50,000 or less.

Landlords are given a property tax abatement credit applied to their property tax bill in the same amount as the increase that the tenant is exempted from paying.

Senior Centers that provide case assistance can also help with starting the application process.

The Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE), also known as the NYC Rent Freeze Program, is an exemption against future rent increases for eligible disabled persons living in rent-controlled, rent-stabilized, Mitchell-Lama and other eligible apartments. Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements for DRIE benefits.

Landlords of DRIE tenants will receive tax credits to make up the difference between the frozen rent and what the DRIE tenants would be paying without the benefit.

Deadline Today to Reunite Immigrant Children with Parents It Won’t Be Met and Kids Are Still Being Separated

he Trump Administration was ordered to reunite all the immigrant children separated from their parents with those parents by today. That won’t happen. Judge Dana Sabraw of the U.S. District Court of Southern California (whose own mother was an immigrant from Japan) ruled that children under the age of five had to be reunited with their parents

by July 10, 2018 and older children by July 26th. As we know, the first deadline was not met. Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy has shocked citizens of this nation and of the world, creating a crisis of epic proportions with an abusive impact.

Families crossed the border from Mexico, many of them following the process to seek lawful asylum due to violence and death threats at home. But still, they were turned away. Children were processed through the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement while their parents were processed through Immigration and Customs Enforcement and held in criminal detention.

The entire process has been so chaotic that the government appears unsure of the numbers, did not know where the children were and has already deported a number of their parents.

The Department of Homeland Security’s official numbers say that “fewer than

3,000” children had been separated from parents: 450 of them between the ages of 5 and 17. It said 1600 parents would be eligible for reunification, 900 were not expected to be eligible and 863 have final deportation orders.

But a report earlier this month by Peter Lemieux for politicsbythenumbers.org looked exhaustively at the stats (and the gaps) to determine that an estimated 4,290 children were separated from families between October 2016 and July 5th of this year. His report states: “The Department of Homeland Security’s own reports indicate that nearly 5,000 children have been separated at the border. Some 4,300 remain in custody, many more than the current official figure of ‘fewer than 3,000.’

Also, there must be many more than 102 children under five years of age.”

And what would make a parent “ineligible” to be reunited with a child by the court-imposed deadline? According to the

government, these are parents who have not been located, who are in criminal custody, who have an alleged criminal history that would endanger the child, and parents who have a communicable disease. The government says these parents would become eligible for reunification if they are located, if their disease passes or if they are released from criminal custody into ICE custody.

However, the latter example is a Catch-22 in some cases. In Texas, immigrant parents were transferred from detention facilities to a local federal prison. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) takes exception to this notion of fitness.

“As we’ve argued in court (an ACLU statement says), the government’s word alone on this determination is not sufficient, which is why we’ve asked the court to order the government to provide details about the nature of the charge, conviction or

warrant for each parent whom the government excluded so that we can verify that not reunifying the child is truly in their best interest.”

In a recent conference call with reporters facilitated by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Royce Murray, policy director with the American Immigration Council, spoke of coercive measures being taken against immigrant parents.

“They were being pressured by ICE to sign papers,” said Royce, “that it would be the fastest way that they could see their child again, that if they choose to fight their case they would be kept in detention for many months longer, prolonging their separation from their children.”

Meanwhile, an estimated 450 parents have already been deported, another 900 have “final deportation orders” and the government has not articulated a plan to have them reunited with their children.

USA/MIDTERMS The Marcia Davis March 6 Washington Post magazine essay, “BLACK POLITICS 2.0: How the post-Obama Generation Is So Done with the Democratic Party’s Old Ways,” is required reading for politics cognoscenti and the 2018 Black voter. It lends insights into Black groups like Woke Vote, BlackPac, Collective PAC, Three Point Strategies political consultants and office seekers working together to get out the Black vote, get more Blacks elected to statehouses and Congress, to get more respect and resources from the Democratic Party. Flying under the NY/DC media radar, these activists, are basically progressives who work hard at fundraising without the benefit of philanthropists.

They have interfaces with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democratic National Committee and the Black Democratic Old Guard.

One of the post-Obama Generation leaders observed that “Blacks should be considered swing voters,” mindful of the power of the Black vote and the Democrats’ consistent attitude of taking Black voters for granted.

In late 2016, about 23% of Black voters listed themselves as independents. The 2016 Black millennial vote was anemic. BLACK POLITICS 2.0 is an informative read.

CURRENT EVENTS: The U.S. Justice Department reopened the 1955 Emmett Till murder case in March 2018. Till, a 14-year-old Black boy, was savagely killed by two Mississippi white men after Carolyn Bryant, a white woman, accused him of flirting with her. An allwhite jury acquitted Till’s two accused white

murderers.

The Emmett Till murder galvanized the American Civil Rights Movement.

LEGAL MATTERS Bipartisan Coalition of 21 AGs – Urges Congress to Act and Protect Election Integrity This week, NYS Attorney General Barbara D. Underwood – part of a bipartisan coalition of 21 Attorneys General – urged congressional leaders to improve American cybersecurity and protect the integrity of the upcoming 2018 midterm election and elections to come against cyberattacks and infiltrations like the ones committed by Russia in 2016.

Investigations have made clear that Russian hackers targeted the American electoral system, stole the private information of hundreds of thousands of people, and infiltrated a company that supplies voting software across the nation.

“No matter how much President Trump waffles, the facts are clear: Russia interfered with our 2016 elections. It’s high time that Congress act to prevent the next attack because our democracy depends on it,” said Attorney General Underwood. “Our bipartisan coalition of Attorneys General has outlined basic steps Congress can take right now to protect election integrity before it’s too late.”

public health risk than tobacco-flavored cigarettes. Menthol cigarettes usage is higher in not only youth tobacco users but also in minority populations.

In 2009, Congress enacted the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (TCA), which effectively banned cigarettes that contained flavors other than tobacco or menthol and granted the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products.

The TCA was passed in order to reduce the number of youth who smoke and become addicted to tobacco products. The New York State Office of the Attorney General now urges the FDA to follow in the footsteps of Congress and ban all flavors in other tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, little cigars and other noncombustible tobacco products.

Cuomo Goes To Bat For NYCHA & Draws Overwhelming Support

ov. Andrew Cuomo (D) came to the playground of the New York Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Marcy Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant yesterday vowing that the 400,000 NYCHA residents citywide will finally see action in repairing decrepit conditions.

“This is supposed to be the progressive capital of the nation, New York City. Everybody likes to talk about how progressive they are, how liberal they are; well, we’re saying walk the walk don’t talk the talk.

If you actually care, then you step up and you do the right thing by NYCHA after so many years of neglect.

That’s what this is all about and that’s what the past few months have been all about,” said Cuomo.

“We’ve been standing up for the NYCHA residents and we’ve started by inviting in all you members of the press, all the cameras and we said to New Yorkers don’t just drive by NYCHA housing, we want you to come in and look inside,” the governor added.

Cuomo noted how the Daily News just the day before wrote a story about the lies that were told where the mayor said, “Well, we’re going to go through all of these repairs and we’re going to fix all of their repairs.” So, what they did was just cross them off the list like they never existed.

“You know how you tell a progressive government that cares about people. It does something, it shows up and it makes repairs. And we now have a federal judge appointed to monitor. And as a financial commitment from the city, a financial commitment to the state. And what the monitor is all about is bringing confidence to the system. Because it’s not just about the money. You need to have management that knows what it’s doing that goes with the money,” said Cuomo.

Cuomo also earned the endorsement of 56 NYCHA tenant leaders across Brooklyn. The tenants specifically praised the governor’s declaration of a “state of emergency” to expedite repairs, $550 million sweeping investment, delivering design/build authority and new oversight measures to restore accountability and bring immediate relief to NYCHA residents.

Danny Barber, president of the NYCHA Citywide Council of Presidents, introduced Cuomo as a fighter you want on your side. “He’s a proven progressive leader and he would not stand by as the people of NYCHA continued to be abused. He shined a light on this tragedy and fought for us – and he fought for all of NYCHA and their families. That’s the kind of experienced leadership NYCHA needs and that’s why I am proud to endorse him for reelection,” said Barber.

Marcy Houses Tenants Association President said, “Governor Cuomo doesn’t just talk the talk, he delivers results. He has stood by the residents of public housing every step of the way and worked to combat the public health crisis facing NYCHA residents.

Governor Cuomo is the leader we need moving forward and I’m proud to endorse him for reelection.”

Other tenants association presidents from Brooklyn endorsing Cuomo include those from NYCHA’s Carey Gardens, Red Hook East, the Brevoort Houses, the Kingsborough Houses, the Langston Hughes Houses, Glenmore Plaza, the Unity Plaza Houses, the Long Island Baptist Houses and the Breukelen Houses.

n the evening of January 28, 1962, a massive crowd gathered outside Harlem’s Purple Manor, eager to gain entrance to Naturally 62 – the landmark event that introduced the ‘Black is Beautiful’ movement to the world.

The brainchild of photographer Kwame Brathwaite (born in 1938) and his older brother Elombe Brath (now deceased), Naturally 62 presented Blackness in its natural state through a powerful combination of fashion, music, and politics.

The brothers, who were born in Brooklyn to a politically active family, had embraced Marcus Garvey’s Back-to-Africa movement and co-founded the African Jazz-Art Society and Studios (AJASS), a collective of artists, writers, musicians, dancers, and fashion designers. “Our mission was to reach the folks so that they could see their own work,” Brathwaite reveals. “It was a time when people were trying to organize and improve the community, to get themselves in order so that they would not be the low man on the totem pole.”

The brothers worked on two fronts, supporting the African independence movement while embracing Black business at home, producing jazz concerts at legendary locales including Club 845 in the Bronx and Small’s Paradise in Harlem. But it was a local beauty contest that gave the brothers the inspiration for Naturally 62. A year earlier, while attending the annual Marcus Garvey Day Celebration, they watched ‘The Miss Natural Standard of Beauty Contest’, wherein models came to the stage without make-up, their hair free from heat press.

Inspired by this vision of Blackness in its natural state, the brothers launched Grandassa Models in an office next to the Apollo Theater on 125 Street. Naturally 62 was the company’s debut event, a fashion show headlined by AJASS members Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach and featuring Grandassa models in natural hair and African-inspired ensembles. “We wanted Black women to take pride in their own selves, in their looks and heritage and let them be beautiful in their own right,” Brathwaite recalls. “We wanted to let them know they did not need to copy anyone else. They could wear their natural hairstyles and have Black pride.”

The phrase ‘Black is Beautiful’ originated with Carlos A. Cooks, a key link between Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X. With Naturally 62, Brathwaite and Brath popularised the phrase and empowered people of African descent to embody a new standard of beauty that transcended the physical plane.

“We started the look of the times,” Brathwaite explains. “We started a tremendous movement to do for ourselves and expanding our rights. We learned what we needed to do in business so that we could produce our own work, be independent and self-reliant.”

unday, July 15th may have been loaded with a number of exciting events throughout the city, but none matched the energy of this year’s 5th Annual Curl Fest event in Brooklyn.

Some 30,000 women of color – of all ages and nationalities -- showcased their beautiful black hair in Prospect Park, and it seemed as though every media form showed up to cover them, their glorious crowns and this powerful movement designed, according to the Curl Fest website, “to create innovative experiences that harness the energy of the natural hair movement.”

Yet, in these so-called “post-racial” times, attempts prevail to mold the thinking of women … and men … of color to the European standards of pulchritude. In fact, the beauty industry is still capitalizing on the multimillion-dollar buying power

of Black women who subjugate their own naturalness for bleaching and weaving, AND Black women who go natural.

While trendwatchers look at this year’s emphasis on natural hair coloring, the publishers of Our Time Press salute Curl Fest founders in inspiring and promoting small business owners who’ve found a niche in the industry.

The Women’s League of Science and Medicine Awards 27 Scholars

F

or nearly 60 years, Brooklyn’s own, The Women’s League of Science and Medicine, has been flying under the radar in comparison to many of the borough’s larger nonprofits, but its grassroots strength in awarding scholarships to students continues to grow.

And on Saturday, the organization gave out 27 scholarships to young students at its 58th Annual Luncheon held at Glen Terrace, 5313 Avenue N in Flatlands. Established in 1960, the organization has grown in size, as evidenced by the packed luncheon, and continues to encourage the next generation of thinkers.

“The Women’s League of Science and

Medicine over the past close to six decades has shown us there is no limitation of what people can do if they put their mind to it, and the importance of strengthening science, mathematics and engineering,” said Keynote Speaker Assemblyman Walter Mosley (D-Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights).

“All these genres and scopes of practice need to be embraced because they transcend the bigotry and opportunity because they’re universal. Any time you allow someone to train in a universal practice the sky is the limit in terms of their ability to succeed in life, whether here in New York City or anywhere else in the world,” he added.

For the past 57 years, the nonprofit, nonsectarian organization has awarded more than 802 scholarships and citations to aspiring students. This includes high school, premed and college students.

In addition, the “League” established an annual scholarship fund in the Department of Education at Midwood High School’s Science Institute at Brooklyn College. The League has also donated to the United Negro College Fund and has further expanded their scholarships to students in the fields of law, education, social science, communication and the arts.

“I learned of the scholarship through my parents,” said Kayah Hodge of Bedford-Stuyvesant and one of Saturday’s recipients.

Beverly Jones-Lawrence, the organization’s current president, said she knows the founders of the organization, the late Reva M. Anthony and the late Sarah Parsons Blow, would have been very impressed with the Women’s League continued outpouring of support.

“It is my goal as president to award our target group of top students in high school, college and grad school,” she said.

“The mission is not an impossible one since our motto continues to be, ‘Dollars equal Scholars!’”

Culture Passes Give Library’s New Life

This is likely because advances in technology have allowed people to access whatever books they want at the swipe and click of a finger. The people that do still visit libraries tend to only do so for computer access. Most people often think to themselves, “Who needs to go to the library anymore, right?” A statement proved evident in an interview with Michaela Johnson who stated, “I can’t remember the last time I went to a library. I don’t even know where my library card is!” Well folks, it’s time to find and dust off those good ol’ library cards and get ready to put them to great use! The Brooklyn Public Library announced its new addition to the establishment that will serve as a great tool for all New Yorkers. This new addition spoken of is the Brooklyn Public Library Culture Pass! According to its website, a Culture Pass is a program for cardholding individuals aged 13 and up.

In addition to the Brooklyn Public Library, other participating libraries include the Queens Library and the New York Public Library. Using their library card, people are granted free access and admission to several of New York City’s best museums, centers, gardens and so much more. With an opportunity this amazing, everyone should try to obtain one as quickly as possible, here’s how.

log in with their library card information and simply browse for passes by date and/or venue. After this, one would make a reservation and download or print their pass before their visit to whichever establishment covered by the BPLCP. They did so by dedicating and naming its auditorium the Stanley Kinard Performing Arts Center. Making this announcement were the principals of the 3 schools including Grecian Harrison Walker of Boys and Girls High School, Allison Farrington of Research and Service High School and Tabari Bomani of the Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice. Collectively they spoke of the tremendous work that Mr. Kinard has done to keep the doors of Boys and Girls High School open to all and establishing it as a culturally relevant community school.

Additionally, in celebration of Mandela, each of the schools in the

building transformed and dedicated a space in their respective schools to commemorate his legacy and serve as a learning space. The Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice established a room to serve as the Mandela Library and Media Center. They are asking for donations of books. Research and Service High School established a room that is a replica of Mandela’s prison cell on Robin Island where he was incarcerated for 27 years. he New York Yankees have started out the second half in an inauspicious way. The team lost the first of three games to the cross-river rival New York Mets, escaped a victory in the second game. The third game was rained out and the team headed to Florida to battle division rival Tampa Bay Rays, in which they had dropped the first game. In last week’s article, one of the needs I expressed that the Yankees must address is their starting pitching.

As we go to press, the Yankees are currently 6 games behind of the Boston Red Sox for first place in the American League East Division, and lately, the Red Sox simply don’t lose, so every Yankee lose looms critical. So, what can the Yankees do to improve their pitching in hopes to compete with the Red Sox and other powerhouse teams in the AL come October?

One of the rumors that have circulated the past few weeks is a cross-river trade that would send Mets ace pitcher Jacob deGrom to the Bronx. It will be quite the challenge for the Yankees to acquire deGrom simply because the Mets’ “asking price” for their top ace pitcher is rumored to be a high one as far as what they would want back in return. DeGrom has had an amazing season (statistically) despite not having a high win total due to the Mets being unable to score runs in his starts. According to a source, the Mets would want a trade with the Yankees that would involve their top phenom player Gleyber Torres. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has already gone on record saying that Torres, 21, is completely “untouchable” in any trade talks. Other pitching names linked to the Yanks have been Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ (lefty) and Texas Rangers lefty Cole Hamels. Both pitchers have had solid baseball careers but would not be considered significant upgrades.

Although the Yankees have gone through a rough patch, they do have an explosive offense that is the pivotal reason to their success so far this season led by sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Also, let’s not ignore the amazing performances by Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar. Their offense will be great, however, aside from their ace pitcher Luis Severino, the Yankees do not really have a complimentary No. 2 pitcher. Masahiro Tanaka can have a few good outings followed by a few bad outings. Veteran pitcher C.C. Sabathia has pitched quite well, however, his past knee issues will be an ongoing concern moving forward and Sonny Gray is not the pitcher the team hoped they were getting when they acquired him in a mid-season trade last year from Oakland. Whatever the Yankees try to do, they will do with caution as they will try to upgrade the pitching rotation or bullpen as much as they can. The question is, “Would they be willing to part ways with their top-tier minor league pitchers to do so?” Stay tuned.

Sports Notes: (Baseball) BREAKING NEWS! As we go to press, the Yankees made a move that should improve their bullpen by coming to terms to acquire Baltimore Orioles closer Zach Britton. Britton will join a bullpen that already includes household names such as Dellin Betances, David Robertson and Aroldis Chapman. New York’s bullpen currently leads the Major Leagues with a 2.75 ERA (earned run average) and 448 strikeouts. (Boxing) Boxing returns to Brooklyn as two of the top fighters in the world clash as Danny “Swift” Garcia takes on Shawn Porter on September 8 for a vacant Welterweight world title.

They longed for yesterday, agonized about current affairs and offered suggestions for making the Organization of Adult and Career Education (OACE) true to its mission. Four of the teachers preferred to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution.

OACE provides free courses to adults 21 and older lacking a high school diploma. While taking courses for a diploma, students can also learn a skill.

According to a flyer, the Adult Learning Center, located at 475 Nostrand Avenue between Macon and Halsey Streets, offers Computer Literacy, Digital Technology, Microsoft Office A+ Certification, Network+, ESL.

If Mayor de Blasio is searching for how to improve adult education, these teachers say he does not have to look far. They recommend he: Create a collaborative environment respective of staff and students.

Hire administrators with at least 5 years of experience teaching adult learners.

Allow teachers to invite an objective 3rd party into the observation process. (No one should rate a teacher if their livelihood depends on issuing U-ratings.)

Include teacher-collected data in the data-based decision-making, not just testing data.

Reduce the emphasis on testing and increase emphasis on student.

These teachers fear they are witnessing another example of the death of public education. Enrollment levels have declined. At least one charter school has swallowed up most of the classrooms at a Manhattan site. “This is a system-wide problem,” says one staff member.

Politics & Elections Putting Common Good Over Billionaires and War Profiteers, House Progressives Introduce “People’s Budget” ■■ By Jake Johnson, Common Dreams

O

ffering an ambitious alternative to the House GOP’s “morally bankrupt” 2019 budget proposal— which demands over $5 trillion in cuts to Social Security, Medicaid, and other life-saving programs—the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) on Tuesday unveiled a budget that calls for massive investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and education while proposing significant cuts to the completely “out-of-control” Pentagon budget.

Titled The People‘s Budget: A Progressive Path Forward (pdf), the CPC’s plan also calls for a ban on “any expansion of U.S. combat troops in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, and many other countries,” demanding an immediate end to “the policy of funding endless wars.”

“The electorate is looking for a new vision for the country and for foreign policy in particular,” Paul Kawika Martin, senior director for policy and political affairs at Peace Action, noted in a statement on Tuesday. “The People’s Budget embodies that new vision by investing in the interests of the people over the interests of the arms industry and the billionaire class.”

Highlighting the Trump administration’s deeply inhumane immigration agenda— which has been a boon for the private prison industry—the CPC’s budget also calls for scaling back “exorbitant funding for immigration detention and enforcement; creating due process, fairness, and accountability in the system; and eliminating the profit motive in immigration detention.”

“As Trump pushes to ramp up excessive border spending and hire more border patrol agents, we’re saying no,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the First Vice Chair of the CPC, declared on Tuesday. “I just returned from the border and what I saw was heartbreaking—kids in cages, awful conditions, and continued family separation. We can’t keep funding this broken system.”

While the People’s Budget stands no chance of passing the Republican-dominated Congress, Jayapal noted that the CPC plan is a “moral document” aimed at articulating House Democrats’ vision and priorities for the months ahead.

In addition to calling for trillions of dollars in funding for healthcare and education, the People’s Budget also demands “more for our climate,” Jayapal notes.

Specifically, the budget calls for a complete elimination of corporate welfare for fossil fuel companies while proposing $2 trillion “to eliminate our lead-contaminated water system” and $80 billion in disaster aid relief for families and communities devastated by extreme weather, which has been worsened by the climate crisis. produced falling wages while deepening inequality, the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) found in an analysis on Tuesday that the People’s Budget would “improve the economic well-being of low- and middleincome families” by making badly needed public investments, allowing the government to negotiate drug prices, and bolstering the safety net.

“The People’s Budget invests in our neglected infrastructure, ends the systematic inequality in our tax system by making corporations pay their fair share, and stops the rising cost of drugs,” Public Citizen concluded on Twitter. “It’s time to put political and economic power back in the hands of the people.”

Parents are only allowed to see those children one hour a day, and we were told that hour was something like 6 in the morning. Additionally, if you are not a parent, that does not apply to you. We sat on the floor with a sobbing grandmother who had not seen her grandchild for four days. She does not know where he is, and she raised

him, has effectively been his parent. If you are over 18 and you come with a 12-year-old sibling, you are separated as well.

“A child who was reunited with his mother told us that he was told by government agents that his mother had abandoned him and that was why she was not there. As they spoke to us, mother and child were weeping, and so were the rest of us. Can you imagine the child abuse, the government-sanctioned violence that we are doing to these children… by telling them things like that?

A lot of top psychologists are saying this is child abuse.”

As the Trump Administration appears unable to rectify the horrible mess it has made, we await the next, and likely missed, deadline and hope that the ACLU and outraged citizens will throw lifelines to these families.
