One Brooklyn Health: A 'Vital Brooklyn' Initiative

G

overnor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that One Brooklyn Health, the new health system created as part of the Vital Brooklyn initiative, identified flagship ambulatory care sites and entered into partnerships with six Brooklyn-based federally qualified health centers to form the foundation of its $210 million, 32-site ambulatory care network.

More than $140 million will be invested in these flagship projects, which will be expanding access to a full range of primary care and other health services in Central Brooklyn. More than $30 million will be invested in the six Brooklyn-based FQHCs to open or expand 11 community health centers, significantly expanding the capacity of these existing Brooklyn-based healthcare providers. An additional $40 million has been reserved for additional ambulatory care locations in central Brooklyn that have been identified as being particularly underserved.

More Than $140 Million for 12 Sites at Flagship Locations With funding from the State’s Vital Brooklyn initiative, One Brooklyn Health will develop 12 sites at flagship locations throughout central Brooklyn. These flagship locations include: The Medical Village at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center (KJMC): The Medical Village, located at the KJMC campus in Crown Heights, will be redeveloped into a comprehensive medical

village offering a diverse portfolio of outpatient clinical and patient supportive services to meet a range of community needs. Several highly-specialized Ambulatory Centers of Excellence will be co-located on the Kingsbrook campus to achieve a truly integrated care - these new sites will include: • An Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) with five operating suites equipped with the latest technology necessary to perform virtually all types of outpatient surgery including eye, upper extremity, knee, hip, ankle, and many cancer related cases including breast surgery.

• An Imaging Center with a comprehensive array of the latest digital diagnostic imaging, electronic picture archiving technologies and non-invasive interventional treatments. The imaging center will include state-ofthe-art equipment such as, MRI, a CT Scanner capable of performing “functional” imaging known as Positron Emission Tomography (PET), diagnostic x-ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, 3-D mammography, bone densitometry, cardiac and peripheral vascular ultrasound.

• A Comprehensive Center that will provide a wide-range of infusion and imaging services, sub-specialty services, patient navigators and patient/ family support groups, rehabilitation, palliative care, access to on site imaging and laboratory, all co-located to

ensure a multi-disciplinary model of care Bishop Walker Health Care Center in Prospect Heights will be completely renovated and reconfigured to expand its capacity and add exam rooms, with a particular focus on women’s and children’s health. As part of this project, there will investments in new equipment, including digital mammography equipment and replacement of two end-of-life x-ray suites. In addition, Bishop Walker will develop a Integrated Women’s and Teen Health Center that will provide comprehensive services, including Internal Medicine, Nutrition, Gynecology, Breast Care Center, Family Planning and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Services, Adolescent Medicine and Sexual and Reproductive Health, which will be co-located with new affordable housing being developed as part of the Vital Brooklyn Initiative.

The Medical Village at Brooklyn Developmental Center (BDC) in East New York will include a new, state of the art, comprehensive ambulatory surgery and imaging center that will be developed in conjunction with the new affordable housing that will be located at BDC. The preliminary design of this comprehensive center includes two operating rooms, two endoscopy suites, plus imaging capacity provided by a state-of-the-art MRI, CT scanner, as well as imaging capacity for routine needs, including two x-ray units, one ultrasound unit, one mammography system and bone density scanner.

Pierre Toussaint Health Center in

Crown Heights will renovate 2,500 square feet of underutilized space to increase primary care capacity, improve patient flow and patient experience, and increase demand for OBHS’ full continuum of primary, specialty and inpatient care. This Center will help reduce unnecessary emergency department visits, improve convenient community access to needed services, and link people to the OBHS’ integrated system to improve their and the community’s health outcomes.

Old Bristol Women & Child Health in East New York will be fully renovated and reopened to provide a broad range of women›s and children›s health services, importantly including developmental pediatric services. Services will be relocated from the Brookdale hospital campus and expanded to provide a broad range of integrated services.

More than $30 Million Invested Through Partnerships with Six BrooklynBased Federal Quality Health Care Partners More than $30 million of the $210 million awarded to One Brooklyn Health to establish a new ambulatory care network will be invested through six FQHC partnerships to enhance primary care with integrated outpatient services at 11 new or expanded community health center locations are: Brownsville Multi-Service Center, Bed-Stuy Family Health Center, Brightpoint Health, ODA Crown Heights, Community Health Network and Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center.

These faithful Republican voters have been gerrymandered into and around districts, “surgically drawn” in their favor, and will vote out any representatives who stand against Trump. And despite their expressed outrage and threats about “it better not happen in 2018”, there is a lingering suspicion that the legislators secretly have little motivation to actually act. With Russia’s help, they will keep the Senate, cut their midterm losses, and if the Russians really do their job, shock the country again by picking up a few seats in the House. This will allow them to keep their jobs, complete their repurposing of the judiciary to maintain “white rule” by making more lifetime appointments, while at the same time encouraging White

nationalists around the world to rally to the newest strongman on their behalf. More tax dollars will be funneled to the top, leaving the masses of people more serf-like and obedient. Just as the oligarchs in Russia and the U.S., like them.

As Republicans contemplate the possibilities of another rigged election and giving Trump another 4 years and another Supreme Court appointment, then the white supremacists, with the help of Russian oligarchs, will have completed the takeover of the U.S.; and like a thing from the dead, the South that fought the Civil War, has risen.

We need to stop insisting that the United States is the strongest nation on earth.

Lumbering around with billion-dollar nuclear subs and carriers. Their ordinance is a laughable match against a dedicated cyberattack that is far more devastating to national

security than the never-to-end conflict in the Middle East. This is the warfare of 2018 and we’d better start inflicting some pain. But there will be no pain coming in the cyber world because we have a traitor as president.

This is real, this is happening, this is now!

Everyone has to vote as though the country depends on it.

othing left to say about President Trump. Even though I loathe the man, his surrender to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his best “Yassa Massa” way, still hurts.

We have an emotionally unstable, frightened and traitorous man as President of the United States, and he will be kept in power by the 87% approval rating he has among Republican voters. These voters have no problem with Putin, a brutal white guy who orders assassinations, invades countries and is the kind of strong man they admire.

The Tale of the Sleeper Agent Donald Trump is the first Russian President of the United States of America. It may not be revealed tomorrow, or next week,

but save this newspaper, put it in plastic, seal it and place it at the bottom of a dresser drawer. And when it is finally revealed that

President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin at their summit in Helsinki, Finland.

Donald J. Trump was indeed a sleeper agent, you can pull this issue out of storage and remember that you read it here in Our Time Press first.

The moves that Trump has made over the past two years, if looked at as individual decisions, might make you think he was a political imbecile, but taking in each issue on its own wouldn’t give you the true breadth of his cumulative work, and you might miss how clever of a Russian agent he is. Let’s start with the Russian collusion. The Mueller investigation has most recently led to the arrests of 12 Russian Nationals, believed to have been involved in the “hacking” of the election of 2016. One notable claim is that these nationals are to blame for e-mails being released in 2016 that were meant to damage the campaign of Hillary Clinton.

While we still wait for Mueller to pin the tail on the jackass, we have already seen the proof of subtle affronts that were responsible for creating an environment conducive to Trump winning the election. One such affront was the creation of more than 30,000 Facebook pages by Russian agencies aimed at creating racial tension in America by purchasing ads and providing misinformation to specific target groups. This tactic, while briefly discussed in the media but then swept away, is a major strategy because it preys on America’s biggest weakness - its race relations. So, when Trump was campaigning

and his rallies were teeming with racial tension, a big catalyst of that tension came from the fact that when those white rural constituents were logged onto Facebook in the days leading up to his rallies, they were being inundated with Black Lives Matter ads and other misinformation regarding minorities on their pages. We know that this happened, we know that Russian agencies were responsible, and that the candidate that most benefited from this was Donald Trump.

If I were to write a novel titled The Russian Agent that became President, I would make the title character do things while in office that put into question the long arching relationship between the United States and its allies. He’d do things like insult Great Britain and organizations like NATO, and he’d begin building bonds with the very dictators that the free world despises. If I would’ve written this novel ten years ago, it probably would’ve been a best-seller. If I write it now, I’d be plagiarizing our current sitting president. Trump has, time and again, made decisions that spit in the face of long-standing, carefully cultivated relationships with allies and with the free world. He abandoned the Paris Climate Agreement, an agreement that every other nation in the world has signed. He exited the Iran Nuclear Deal, a stance that the other ➔➔ Continued on page 5

Obama warns against ‘strongman politics’

resident Barack Obama has ma­ de an art of criticizing the cu­rrent President›s values without expli­ citly naming Trump, peppering his speech Tuesday with warnings against some of Trump’s key policies, including protectionism, climate change denial and closed borders.

“The politics of fear and resentment and retrenchment began to appear. And that kind of politics is now on the move. It’s on the move at a pace that would have seemed unimaginable just a few years ago,” he told the crowd of around 15,000 people in Johannesburg.

“I am not being alarmist, I’m simply stating the facts. Look around — strongman politics are ascendant, suddenly, whereby elections and some pretense of democracy are maintained, the form of it, where those in powers seek to undermine every institution or norm that gives democracy meaning.”

‘People just make stuff up’ Obama’s remarks come a day after Trump’s news conference in Helsinki, Finland, in which the US leader sided with Putin over his own country’s intelligence agencies on whether Russia interfered in the 2016 US election.

Trump had been expected by some observers to confront Putin over the issue after the US Department of Justice indicted 12 Russians, accused of hacking the Democrat’s emails and computer networks to target Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

The President flip-flopped on his stance on the matter, having said last year he believed Russia was behind the interference, but back-pedaling Monday to claim he believed Putin’s account that Russia was not involved.

Obama mocked the way politicians lie and reminded his audience of the importance of facts.

“You have to believe in facts. Without facts there’s no basis for cooperation. If I say this is a podium and you say this is an elephant, it’s going to be hard for us to cooperate,” he said.

“I can’t find common ground if somebody says that climate change just isn’t happening, when almost all the world’s scientists tell us it is. I don’t know where to start talking to you

He added that politics today often rejected the concept of objective truth.

“People just make stuff up. They just make stuff up. We see it in the growth of state sponsored propaganda. We see it in internet fabrications. We see it in the blurring of lines between news and entertainment. We see the utter loss of shame among political leaders where they’re caught in a lie and they just double down and they lie some more. It used to be that if you caught them lying, they’d be like, oh man -- now they just keep on lying,” he said, to laughter in the crowd.

‘Head-spinning and disturbing headlines’ Obama had opened his speech reflecting on the recent chaos of the world that gave him the opportunity to seek perspective.

“But in the strange and uncertain times that we are in -- and they are strange, and they are uncertain, with each day’s news cycles bringing more head-spinning and disturbing headlines -I thought maybe it would be useful to step back for a moment and try to get some perspective,

so I hope you’ll indulge me,” he said.

He warned that the press was under attack, that censorship and state control of media is on the rise and that social media was being used to promote hate, propaganda and conspiracy theories.

“So, on Madiba’s 100 birthday, we now stand at a crossroads,” he said, using a clan name of affection for Mandela.

He said that there was a choice between two visions of humanity’s future that the world must choose between.

“How should we respond? Should we see that wave of hope that we felt with Madiba’s release from prison? From the Berlin Wall coming down? Should we see that hope that we had as naïve and misguided?” he asked.

“Let me tell you what I believe. I believe in Nelson Mandela’s vision, I believe in a vision shared by Gandhi and King, and Abraham Lincoln, I believe in a vision of equality and justice and freedom and multi-racial democracy built on the premise that all people are created equal and are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights.”

Obama speech, the 16th annual Nelson Mandela Lecture, in one of his highest-profile

appearances and his first return to Africa since he left office in 2017.

His lecture, titled “Renewing the Mandela legacy and promoting active citizenship in a changing world,” tracked the transformation of the world, particularly in terms of race relations and human rights, over the past 100 years.

“It is a plain fact that racial discrimination still exists in both the United States and South Africa,” he said.

Obama’s speech followed remarks by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Mandela’s widow, Graça Machel, formerly a freedom fighter and minister in Mozambique’s government.

Machel drew several parallels between Mandela and Obama, portraying them both as modest men as “symbols of victory over adversity.”

“From the humblest of beginnings, they are representatives of the masses and reached to the pinnacle of power and influence. But in doing so they were able to elevate the rights and ambitions of the disenfranchised and the weak. ➔➔ Continued on page 11

The Village of Harlem is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved citizens, Beverly Alston.

A mother and educator, Beverly wore many hats. She was a politically engaged Beverly Alston community leader,

a devout Democrat who had a “fire in the belly” for all of the causes she espoused, which were manifold, particularly those related to her native Harlem, its culture and sustainability.

A president of the Jackie Robinson Park Conservatory, a life member of Rev. Sharpton’s National Action Network, she was also a Superintendent of the NYS Office of General Service in Brooklyn. Her funeral service was held at Harlem’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church on July 17.

BUSINESS MATTERS Essence Ventures CEO Richelieu Dennis launched the $100 million New Voice Fund for Women of Color which was announced at the recent Essence Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Liberianborn Dennis has entrepreneurship in his DNA. And while he’s been arrogant and dismissive to our friends, he’s saved his best behavior for his meetings with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, two of the most treacherous dictators in the world. Yup, sounds just like what a Russian agent would do as president.

This enigma of a man is either the dumbest guy to ever hold the Office of President, or he is the most egotistical and maniacal human since Hitler. Or, he is a sleeper agent from Russia, his family planted long ago in the 40’s and early 50’s during the era highlighted by McCarthyism and the Red Scare. I always thought the name Trump was kinda peculiar. It sounds like someone made it up. Did I mention that he has married two women who are from Eastern-bloc countries? Ivana is from the Czech Republic and Melania is from Slovenia. In my opinion, he’s made it too far to be dumb, and he’s played his cards to deliberately be maniacal. I’m going with sleeper agent.

Remember what I said. Wrap this newspaper in plastic and save it. When it does come out that Trump is a Russian agent, you’re going to want to show your friends that you knew all along.

Tips on Impacting National Elections from Your Brooklyn Base

ritical elections are just around the corner and Brooklyn residents can help turn out the vote in areas across the country. We know that with the recent dismantling of the IDC, New York State is once again relatively safe from Republican control. But for locals who’d like to see Democrats retake the Senate and the House, there are ways to have long-distance impact. This is especially important when Rep. Maxine Waters, for example, could become the head of the House Finance Committee and subpoena Donald Trump’s financial records, something Republicans will not do.

One Brooklyn-based group that is working to make a difference nationally is Higher Heights for America, a non-profit that is mobilizing Black women to wield their voting and economic power to influence public policy and to be elected to office. Kimberly Peeler-Allen, a co-founder of the organization says, “The chairmanships of all the committees will change if Democrats pick up the 23 seats they’re striving towards. he incidents of African-American women being brutalized or slain is increasing to a point that the rallying cry of “Say Her Name!” can be heard from coast to coast in the United States. The causes of the deaths are questionable.

Friday, July 13, 2018, Equality for Flatbush and People’s Power Assembly NYC sponsored the Justice for Sandra Bland and All Black Women Rally and March outside of the Church Avenue Q/B subway station.

The protestors covered the sidewalk and as more people joined the throng, the people spilled onto E. 18th Street and Church Avenue.

New York Police Officers were in full force working crowd control, however, they used restraint.

Kerbie Joseph from The Party for Socialism and Liberation led the chant, “Our Streets, Our Block!

We don’t need these killer cops!”

Kerbie Joseph said, “It’s been three years since Sandra Bland was killed in her prison cell. We need to stand in unity with her. This is an epidemic. It’s not an isolated occurrence.

Every 28 hours someone is violated by the police.” Joseph continued by saying, “It is your right to come out every night and chant against police brutality.” She left the place designated for speechmaking after getting the crowd to chant several times, “All around the world, defend Black women and girls!”

This rally was in honor of Sandra Bland who died in July 2015 and other women. Who was Sandra Bland and how did she die?

from her alma mater Prairie View A & M University located in Waller County, TX. A Texas State Trooper stopped her for not signaling before switching lanes. The result of this stop was one of Bland’s arms got injured and she was arrested for assaulting a police officer. On July 13, 2015, Bland was found dead in her prison cell, the cause being “suicide by asphyxiation.”

The Bland family has not accepted that Sandra had committed suicide because she looked upon her college position as a dream job.

Add to this, Waller County has a history of racism and brutality.

These facts had her family and other concerned African-Americans dig deeper into the situation.

What they found was the arresting officer’s car had no footage of the police stop of her car. The Bureau of Justice Statistics started counting jail deaths in 2000 but did not start distributing the statistics until 2011.

The 2015 data will not be available for distribution until the fourth quarter of 2018. The data reveals there were 1,069 jail deaths, of which 364 were suicides. Another controversy in the imprisonment and death of Sandra Bland is that there is a belief in certain quarters that her prison photograph could be a picture of her corpse. This belief is based on the fact that the background is the same color as the prison floor. She is clothed in an orange prison jumpsuit, whereas new inmates are typically dressed in street clothing.

Celeste Morris, a Higher Heights member is the go-to person at the organization for facts and history when it comes to New York’s political landscape.

She followed this by calling out the names of women who were killed by police officers and added, ‘I’m definitely anti-capitalistic.

It is the root of colonialism and capitalism.’”

Another slain woman recognized during this rally and march was Kyam Livingston. Kyam Livingston is a case of being vilified and experiencing medical neglect. Livingston was a 37-yearold woman who, through an order of protection, was permitted to reside within her grandmother’s (Theresa Johnson) home but disallowed Livingston from drinking alcohol or arguing with her grandmother there. Due to her unsteady walking, Ms. Johnson believed Kyam was inebriated and therefore called the police to remove her from the home on Friday, July 19, 2013. Livingston was put in a cell with 15 other women. Livingston complained of stomach pains and diarrhea. The other inmates were sympathetic to her situation and began to bang on the jail bars and calling to the officers to aid her. The inmates cleared a bench to give Livingston a place to lie down. Livingston began convulsing. A female jail staffer, upon seeing the convulsions said, “Just let it play out.” The female jail staffer explained she had a grandson who experienced convulsions. Sometime in the late hours of Saturday, July 20, 2013, jail staff called Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to take Livingston to a hospital. Early Sunday morning, July 21, 2013, Kyam Livingston died twenty minutes before EMS arrived and at approximately 10:00 AM, EMS came to Anita Livingston’s (her mother) home to inform her of her daughter’s passing.

Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Kings County Hospital wherein the Chief Medical Examiner documented the death due to seizure complicating chronic alcoholism. This does not mean Kyam Livingston died from being drunk. In fact, Livingston’s toxicology report proves she was sober.

The Justice for Sandra Bland and All Black Women event transformed from a rally to a march smoothly. The body marched east on Church Avenue and turned

north onto Flatbush Avenue. At the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Parkside Avenue, the body marched west on Parkside and turned north into Ocean Avenue with NYPD in tow. Chants included, “When Black girls are under attack, what do you do? Stand up!

Fight Back!” and “We want justice for Kyam Livingston, killed in a Brooklyn cell!” There were more than ten NYPD cars following the marchers. The event went beyond the official 9 PM end time.

Honoring an American Hero ■■

D

uring the blazing hot day that was Saturday, July 14th, the Bed-Stuy Volunteer Ambulance Corps celebrated their 29th Anniversary and honored their founder, Rocky Robinson.

The organization is deep-rooted in Brooklyn and to this day the organization still takes on volunteers to provide medical service and education to the community. During this event, I had the opportunity to explore the Ambulance Corps and take in the scenery. I also met a few of the corps members as well as Rocky himself. The event was a parade, block party and even a bit of a fundraiser all rolled into one.

Corps members were everywhere, whether it was setting up the tables and displays or greeting the Commander Rocky Robinson to thank him for his hard work. Watching the setup, you could see why Rocky Robinson was the commander.

He was literally commanding the volunteers, making sure that things were being placed perfectly and that food was being prepared for the community guests. It was defi-

nitely a sight to see. Commander Robinson also spoke to members of the community, simply passing by and encouraging them to join the celebration.

WBLS broadcaster Bob Lee, and local DJs "from around the way" provided the music for the event and individuals from Commander Robinson’s old rhyming days were on hand reminiscing with the crowd. On the DJ’s booth there was a banner that read, “It takes the hood to save the hood,” and that motto showed in the membership and the work they do.

Rocky’s corps members are people of color from the community giving back and caring for the community.

You could also see the corps banner and flags from various countries from around the world representing how far this corps has reached into the community and risen up from its humble days in Brooklyn. However, it is clear that none of the members of the corps have lost their connection to their Brooklyn or New York roots.

That connection was made evident when Commander Robinson was surrounded by members of his corps beaming with pride and preparing for the parade. During this time, there was plenty of opportunity for community members to take photos with Commander Robinson and tell their own stories about how he and his corps had touched their lives.

One of the strongest and most touching moments during this community event was when Commander Robinson grabbed the microphone and thanked people for coming out and celebrating.

He also led a call and response asking members of his corps and the community, “What are we?!” And we would reply as a community of lives touched by this organization.

“Family!” That feeling is what this organization’s roots are in, family.

This is primarily due to the man behind the organization, Rocky Robinson, who will be discussed in a separate article.

The event was a love fest, filled with music and song; highlights included performances of "Rock Steady" by his daughter

vocalist Priceless, and James Brown-funky beats, by former band mates led by Fred Thompson. This event was a celebration the source of the community's resilience and a living legend who made it possible.

He Saved Her Son's Life

ne woman at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corporation recognition ceremony and block party proved to be a living testimony of the success of Rocky Robinson’s volunteer corporation. During the block party, 22-year resident of the Greene Avenue Block, Andrea Hawkins, revealed that 18 years ago, her son had an allergic reaction to peanuts. Unable to find the proper solution at the time, a frantic Hawkins rushed her 6-year-old son down the block to the volunteer ambulance corporation. It was here where trained EMT members took control of the situation. Every day, she thanks Rocky Robinson and the Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corporation as she later stated in an interview: “If it wasn’t for this place, my son wouldn’t be here. It’s a blessing.” In her closing remarks, she also placed special emphasis on the fact that we, as a community, must support BSVAC as much as possible.

Playthell Benjamin on Stan Kinard: His Legacy is Incalculable, "Job Well Done!"

o one could fail to be moved by all the heartfelt tributes to Brother Kinard offered up by people he has helped over the years. Many of his former students have developed into truly impressive people who are making tremendous contributions to their community. I have known this brother for 50 years, since he was my student at the University of Mass.- Amherst.

He exhibited impressive leadership qualities even back then, as he was a student leader that led the fight to create the W.E.B. DuBois Department of Black Studies. The creation of this department - the first free-standing, degree-granting, Black Studies Department in the WORLD brought to Amherst one of the most impressive gatherings of international Black activist intellectuals in history! Hence, Stan had begun to make history and create lasting institutions as a teenager; the DuBois Department is approaching its 50th year and Black Studies is now institutionalized in universities everywhere!

The contribution of Brother Stan Kinard in educating Black students to realize their full potential is incalculable! Hence, it was altogether fitting and proper that we should gather and heap praise songs upon him to show our gratitude for a job well done.

BRAVO BROTHER STAN! BRAVO!! You are EVERYTHING we hoped our students would become! It was an honor to participate in the celebration of such a consequential life....

We Celebrated a Warrior ■■

n Friday, July 13th, 2018 at Sistas’ Place in the People’s Republic of Brooklyn’s capital city of Bedford-Stuyvesant, we celebrated a warrior, Brother/ Baba Stan Kinard, who has made and continues to make monumental contributions towards the upliftment of our children and community. It was a phenomenal evening with historic presentations of Stan’s revolutionary

work. Key to this work is the preservation of Boys and Girls High School as the people’s institution--a communiversity.

The celebration was fueled with interludes of culturally enriching performances. A packed intergenerational gathering spilled out onto the sidewalk.

Encircled in the support of a loving community, Brother Stan shared that he has been waging an ongoing battle with prostate cancer for the past fourteen years. This warrior man is strong! He is

quite active working together with his care team to ensure his well-being. We would join them in this battle to help increase his strength.

We left inspired knowing that life comes with inherent challenges. But we must give it all we got. How well we band ourselves together as family and community to surmount them will define our victory. We thank all who came together to coordinate this event, all the artistes and all of you who brought the love that further energized our brother.

"Have You No Shame?" Lawsuit Filed on Behalf of Williamsburg Families

T

he Trump family is facing more criticism for its “disregard for human life,” in the words of Aaron Carr, founder and executive director of the Housing Rights Initiative (HRI).

On Monday, HRI and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced a $10 million, 19-plaintiff lawsuit against the Kushner Companies.

Filed by the Law Office of Jack L. Lester, Esq., in Kings County Supreme Court on Monday, the suit is based on an investigation

by HRI that has found that Kushner Companies engaged in illegal construction practices in a 338-unit building at 184 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg.

According to an independent lab analysis, families, including children and babies, were exposed to highly toxic and cancer-causing substances, including, but not limited to, the lung carcinogen crystalline silica and lead.

“Kushner Companies’ business model is steeped in illegality, depravity and unending greed,” said Carr. “This is a company that has shown a brazen disregard for human life and an insatiable obsession with its bottom line.

Kushner Companies is not above the law, but they most certainly have to follow the law.”

In February 2015, Kushner Companies

purchased the building at 184 Kent Avenue for $275 million. Its plan was to gut, renovate and convert the rental units into luxury condominiums for a projected sellout of over $400 million.

According to Lester, the building is receiving a tax benefit that entitles 100 percent of the tenants to set rent increases and guaranteed renewal leases. “In other words,” according to the press release, “it seems that Kushner Companies was betting on tenants to leave when the tenants had a legal right to stay.

“To circumvent New York City’s housing laws, it appears that Kushner Companies commenced a deliberate campaign to systematically harass its residents out of their apartments using illegal, dangerous and destructive construction practices, namely exposing dozens of tenants to a toxic dust storm of lead and lung carcinogens.

Cancerous and poisonous materials contaminated the halls, contaminated the air and contaminated tenants’ apartments. The lawsuit is seeking $10,000,000 in compensation for the families and children who had their health and safety compromised, and rights undermined,

by Kushner Companies’ real estate practices.”

At a Monday afternoon press conference Lester said, “We are commencing this lawsuit to secure justice for the tenants exposed to

unsafe and hazardous conditions during the Kushners’ mad dash to gouge profits while ignoring the health of tenants in residence.

“On behalf of the public, we are expressing zero tolerance for lawbreaking landlords putting personal profit ahead of basic concern for the safety of their tenants.”

This is the third lawsuit that has resulted from nonprofit HRI’s investigation of Kushner Companies.

Said Borough President Adams, “We must do all that we can legislatively and through our courts to ensure our laws not only protect tenants but aggressively prosecute violators so that justice is served accordingly. What is taking place at 184 Kent Avenue is just a microcosm of a larger epidemic of tenant harassment across the borough.”

“The Kushner family subjecting rent-regulated New York families to harmful and dangerous living conditions is all-too-common landlord behavior in New York City,” said Public Advocate Letitia James. “I commend Housing Rights Initiative and Borough President Adams for taking legal action against the shameful acts of a company that has long harassed Brooklyn families. We must continue to protect rent-regulated tenants from predatory landlords and seek the justice that these New Yorkers deserve.”

James explained that the job of state attorney general is about 60 percent serving as the state’s lawyer representing various state agencies, 20 percent affirmative litigation bringing civil litigations on behalf of the state as criminal prosecutions are mainly under the purview of county district attorneys, and 10 percent advocacy, which she has been doing all her life.

James said the top issue that will concern her as attorney general is to focus on, “The illegitimate individual who sits in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, President Trump, and continuing to focus on him and bringing innovative and creative lawsuits against his administration’s policies.”

Other top issues James will focus on include bringing lawsuits against consumer fraud, making sure that businesses do not prey upon vulnerable individuals, particularly farmers; and to focus on the opioid crisis and other health care concerns.

“Just the fact that there are people preying upon immigrants at this point in time and the separation of families [needs addressing], and I’m actually representing some of these children,” said James.

Among the elected officials who attended the opening were Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, State Sen. Roxanne Persaud, Assembly members Tremaine Wright and Latrice Walker, and City Council member Alicka Ampry-Samuel.

“I’m excited for Tish’s candidacy. She is going to be New York State’s next attorney general. She is the most qualified person that we can send for this position. She’s a woman of character, of substance. She has all the experience and qualifications necessary to get this job done, and she would make an excellent attorney general. She has my support 100 percent,” said Wright.

Ampry-Samuel said James’ campaign has a lot of energy and noted her excitement to be a part of the campaign trail to help James win the seat.

he first half of the Major League Baseball season is in the books for our beloved Yankees and Mets and it appears both teams (at the moment) are going in different directions.

With baseball’s trade deadline looming, it is expected that both teams will be active in improving their ball clubs in hopes for a playoff or lengthy playoff run in October.

The New York Mets came out the gates in the 2018 campaign with a winning swagger that had the team atop of the National League East Division. The team’s early first-place performance had many Met fans thinking quite high about the team making the playoffs in what is expected to be several teams including the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals who are in the same division as the Mets jockeying for playoff position. Since then, the Mets, as a team, has endured some rough times due to key injuries to a few of their top players. Top players such as Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard and Todd Frazier have served some time on the team’s disabled list. The injuries have caught up to the Mets where they have fallen down to fourth place in the NL East.

It is unknown whether Mets management will be buyers or sellers at the deadline.

There are many needs they need to address to compete with the top-tier teams in the NL. They can also be sellers and acquire some top prospects and continue to build for the future.

For the Yankees, the team currently holds the second-best record in all of baseball despite being four games back of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East Division. We all know too well about the Yankees dominant offensive lineup, which currently leads the league in most home runs. The Achilles’ heel for the Bronx Bombers has been their starting pitching. With the exception of their young ace pitcher Luis Severino, the team’s starting pitching has been just about average and inconsistent at the same time. There have been rumors of the Yankees showing interest in Mets ace pitchers Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard, both of whom would be a huge upgrade for the Yankees pitching staff. The question is, “What will be the Mets asking price if they were to agree to trade deGrom or Syndergaard?” The Yankees are in a good predicament to offer a trade to the Mets for a deGrom considering the Yankees minor league farm system is absolutely loaded with talent.

The trade deadline is July 31. How will the Yankees and Mets roster look as both teams attempt to make a strong 2nd half push towards playoff ball in October.

Dr. Carlos Russell: A Man of Consequence in these Uncertain Times

T

he recent passing of Dr. Carlos E. Russell recalled the great work he began; the lessons he shared and taught and we must activate soon.

The visionary activist, playwright, writer and village-builder was the architect of two major events – that will soon have their day -- both launched here in Brooklyn. In 1969, he created New York City’s Black Solidarity Day. The following year, supported by other community warriors, he took the concept nationwide, with the founding of National Black Solidarity Day. Mr. Russell’s concept derived from Douglas Turner Ward’s play, “Day of Absence” which centered around the extreme social, political, and economic consequences that would ensue if all Black people were to disappear for one day.

And so, we pondered how Dr. Russell’s foundation will impact future Days. We found that his vision was more than an exercise in celebration of a moment of group self-discovery: the 50th anniversary of Black Solidarity Day in New York comes a year from now. NYS Files Lawsuit Against Cutting of State and Local Tax Deductions

EW YORK – Today, New York Attorney General Barbara D. Underwood and Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced a lawsuit to protect New York and its taxpayers from Washington’s drastic curtailment of the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction. The lawsuit argues that the new SALT cap was enacted to target New York and similarly situated states, that it interferes with states’ rights to make their own fiscal decisions, and that it will disproportionately harm taxpayers in these states.

The 2017 federal tax law, which resulted from a hyper-partisan and rushed process, drastically reduced the deduction by capping it at $10,000. An analysis by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance shows that the cap will increase New Yorkers’ federal taxes by $14.3 billion in 2018 alone, and an additional $121

By depressing home values, the new provision will hurt taxpayers in New York and other states, while also reducing state tax revenues – forcing states to choose between higher tax rates or cutting investments in education, public services, and other vital programs.

The new cap on the SALT deduction also violates the constitutional principle of equal state sovereignty, by targeting a handful of states for unfavorable treatment based on their sovereign policy choices.

The lawsuit also highlights the enactment history of the Sixteenth Amendment, which confirms that the federal government’s tax power has limits, and that it cannot be used to intrude on the sovereign authority of the states to determine their own taxation and fiscal policies.

Cultural TV Continues to Bring Attention to Caravan of Little-Known Heroes

ver the past several years, Cultural Caravan TV has presented some riveting interviews with extraordinary but seldom publicly recognized individuals who are doing or have done extraordinary things for their communities and the nation.

The broadcast’s recent two-part conversation with former US Ambassador Harriet Elam Thomas is a great example of this ongoing work.

In the July 8 first part, producer Louise Dente featured Ambassador Thomas discussing highlights from her new memoir Diversifying Diplomacy: My Journey from Roxbury to Dakar. The discussion detailed the ambassador’s life journey from a working-class Black

family in Boston at a time when America was still segregated in all aspects of life, to living in the capitals of Europe as a government official to being appointed U.S. Ambassador to Senegal.

In part two’s conversation, presented last week, July 15, Ambassador Thomas outlined the inspiration and purpose for her national domestic civility tour which is in response to the actions of the current administration. The guest host was Robin Nickens.

International Day of Friendship at Brooklyn Borough Hall

n Sunday, August 5th, Borough President Adams will host an “International Day of Friendship” celebration in Brooklyn, his fifth annual festival recognizing the hundreds of cultures and ethnicities that make Brooklyn an unparalleled center of diversity.

As the signature event in Borough President Adams’ “Embrace Your Hyphen” campaign celebrating Americans who honor their various heritages, the day will consist of a series of cultural identity-oriented festivities that begin at 1:00 PM with a Unity Parade of Flags, featuring the flags of 195 nations marching down Fulton Street from its intersection with Flatbush Avenue toward Brooklyn Borough Hall.

What better way to orientate yourself with a new country or culture than through food and drinks? Food is a very important part of a person’s day, so why not nourish the people of Brooklyn with unique cuisine from all around

the world? International Day of Friendship will give Brooklynites a unique treat; there will be tents set up and filled with delicious food from all over the world.

Following the parade, which will include New Yorkers from more than 80 countries as well as dancers, drummers and stilt walkers, the festivities at Brooklyn Borough Hall and Columbus Park will run through 5:00 PM and feature a series of artistic and cultural performances from a wide variety of groups represented in the borough, as well as a taste of ethnic cuisine from an array of local food trucks.

The celebration will also present a Global Village, including tents from countries around the world showcasing their cultures, cuisines and customs from around the world. Visitors will be able to have an interactive experience in each of these tents to feel, hear and see unique cultural artifacts and stories.

Drs. Sanford and Madhubuti to Speak at Mt. Pisgah Tribute to Dr. John Henrik Clarke, July 29

he Board for the Education of People of African Ancestry will host its 20th Anniversary Tribute to the legacy of Dr. John Henrik Clarke (January 1, 1915 – July 12, 1998) on Sunday, July 29th, starting at 3:00 PM at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 212 Tompkins Avenue at DeKalb Avenue, in Brooklyn, New York, it was announced on Monday by Betty Dopson of CEMOTAP. Dr. Adelaide Sanford and Dr. Haki Madhubuti will highlight the presentation entitled “The Victory of Dr. John Henrik Clarke.”

Dr. Clarke was an American historian, pro­fessor and a pioneer in the creation of PanAfrican and Africana Studies at professional institutions in academia starting in the late 1960s. As a foremost educator, Dr. Clarke challenged people of color to “Wake up, unite and do for self.”

He said often, “To control a people you must first control what they think about themselves and how they regard their history and culture.

And when your conqueror makes you ashamed

of your culture and history, he needs no prison walls and no chains to hold you.”

Dr. Haki Madhubuti, the internationally known author, educator, poet and founder of Third World Press, is considered a living example of the power and success gained by embracing African culture and history as what Dr. Clarke would call a “weapon against racism and exploitation.”

Dr. Sanford, Vice Chancellor Emerita of the New York State Board of Education, is revered for her role as an advocate for students, parents, teachers and principals in both public and private education systems. She is founder of the Board for the Education of People of African Ancestry, which is housed at the Dr. John Henrik Clarke House in Harlem; it is believed to be the only existing institution of its kind.

The public is invited to join in celebrating John Henrik Clarke’s life and learning more about his legacy from distinguished scholars Dr. Sanford and Dr. Madhubuti.
