Montgomery / Wright Respond to Homeowner’s Cries

damaging their adjoining properties. Thanks to State Senator Velmanette Montgomery and Assemblymember Tremaine Wright, help is on the way. The Construction Notification Bill (S4519-A / A5823-B), which passed in the state legislature, will require the New York City Department of Buildings (NYC DOB) to provide written notification to adjoining property owners when an application for approval of construction is submitted to NYC DOB. The legislation also requires NYC DOB to provide proof of insurance and a copy of the permit to owners of adjoining property thirty days before construction or demolition work begins, except in the event that emergency work is authorized.

“This is such a win for New York City residents and especially homeowners in our districts. he evolution is not being televised, but that’s not stopping organizations, families and individuals from doing the groundwork and without benefit of high-powered, costly publicity campaigns or even, in many cases, city, state and federal funds. The beneficiaries are the community, the individuals in public housing, the children and families, the disenfranchised.

We found grace and greatness over the past three months in the schools of Brooklyn and in the community groups taking their message of inequities to the steps of City Hall, as members of the Vanguard Independent Democratic Association, District 16 Community Education Council (CEC) and Councilman Mark Treyger did a couple of weeks ago. They announced that public schools in majority neighborhoods of color are not getting the attention, the funds, the respect and the support needed to properly educate our students.

In the face of indifference, the community is expected to run on empty. But it continues to go the distance. One example is the recent achievement of a few individuals who did not give up on P.S. 25/ Eubie Blake School. The little school that said it “could” -- did-- stay open through a court decree in the face of formidable forces.

And arguably a best example is the Best Awards Ceremony, a project of the Education & Youth Committee of Community Board 3 -- the voice, ears and eyes of Bedford-Stuyvesant. ➔➔ Continued on page 3

n June 20, 2018, Flower Lovers Advocating for Communities (FLAC) and the Movement To Protect the People (MTOPP), with the support of Senator Jessie Hamilton, will be hosting the Shadow and Sunglare Forum to inform and involve the community about the potential negative environmental and social impacts of the proposed 22- and 44-story buildings being proposed along Franklin Ave. bordering the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

was introduced after a building collapse in the community several years ago.

The engineers and contractors were unaware of several significant vertical cracks, although they were visible to the tenants. As a result, the appropriate precautions were not followed and the building collapsed, leaving several people injured and fourteen homeless.

Prior notification required by this legislation would have prevented this incident from occurring.

Additionally, for brownstone homeowners and property owners of older buildings, a neighboring construction or renovation project can cause substantial and expensive property damage. They are often at a loss on what to do and who to contact to get repairs made. This legislation will empower them with information necessary to pursue damages and get needed repairs done.

Supreme Court Upholds Ohio Voter Suppression Efforts

NAACP Committed to Fighting Decision

ALTIMORE (June 11, 2018) — The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation’s premier civil rights organization released the following statement on today’s Supreme Court Decision to uphold the Ohio Supplemental Voter “List Maintenance” Process.

The NAACP is disappointed in today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold Ohio’s supplemental voter “list maintenance” process, but is likewise determined to protect infrequent voters of color from being disenfranchised through Ohio’s process and similar processes used by other states. In today’s 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Ohio’s program does not violate the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) by impermissibly targeting persons who have not recently voted for possible removal from voting rolls. The NAACP filed an amicus brief to the Court in this case, which was cited by Justice Sotomayor in her dissenting opinion, which states: “In concluding that the Supplemental Process does not violate the NVRA, the majority does more than just misconstrue the statutory text. It entirely ignores the history of voter suppression against which the NVRA was enacted and upholds a program that appears to further the very disenfranchisement of minority and low-income voters that Congress set out to eradicate.”

“This decision demands that the NAACP and like-minded organizations redouble their efforts to ensure that voters of color are registered and prepared to vote in this fall’s elections,” said NAACP General Counsel Bradford Berry. “As we reflect on the life and legacy of Medgar Evers, who was assassinated 55 years ago because of his voter registration work in Mississippi, we call on our members and supporters to engage their state and local officials to focus their efforts on increasing voter participation in this fall’s elections, rather than targeting the most vulnerable of our citizens for removal from the voting rolls.”

Statement from Rev. Al Sharpton NEW YORK (June 11, 2018) — Rev. Al Sharpton, president and founder of National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement following this morning’s Supreme Court decision upholding the way Ohio purges its voter rolls: “Today’s Supreme Court decision marks an outrageous backwards step for voting rights. This kind of codified voter suppression disproportionately impacts people of color and marginalized

communities that are already underrepresented at the ballot box, and could mean further disenfranchisement for millions of eligible voters across the country when other states adopt similar laws.

We at National Action Network have no patience for ongoing efforts to deny these Americans their constitutional right to vote – we will remain vigilant in fighting voter suppression in the courts, the legislature, and our community partners to tear down barriers to voting.”

Supreme Court Ruling Sanctions Voter Suppression Civil and Human Rights Groups Cite Ruling as Major Problem for Communities of Color Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court dealt a blow to the civil rights fight against voter suppression tactics in a 5-4 ruling in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute, et al., where the Court upheld Ohio’s aggressive practice of purging voters for simply not voting.

In an amicus brief filed in 2017, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, were joined by 19 organizations who conveyed that the aggressive practice used in Ohio of purging voter rolls of individuals who had not voted in a two-year period, is harmful to communities of color, especially those with limited English proficiency in the Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Latinx communities.

In Justice Sotomayor’s dissenting opinion she clearly understood the concerns outlined in our amicus brief and stated how at length our brief explained “how low voter turnout rates, language-access problems, mail delivery issues, inflexible work schedules, and transportation issues, among other obstacles, make it more difficult for many minority, low-income, disabled, homeless, and veteran voters to cast a ballot or return a notice, rendering them particularly vulnerable to unwarranted removal under the Supplemental Process.”

It is important to note that the Court did not green-light purge practices writ large.

States may not knock eligible voters off the rolls without providing notice. However, we remain gravely concerned that this Supreme Court decision creates a danger that other states will pursue purging practices that will disenfranchise millions of eligible voters across the country.

he problem with the “lack of diversity at the Specialized High Schools (SHS) debate” is that it lacks honesty and a

real commitment to dramatically change the educational conditions of the vast majority of the city’s Black and Latino children who are in our K-8 schools.

I am not questioning the sincerity of those who want to see greater diversity at the city’s SHS’s. Diversity is a worthy social justice and educational goal. But SHS admissions through “set-asides” or some kind of quota may result in an increase in a few more SHS seats for Black and Latino students. But let us not deceive

Death of a Dynasty ■■

A

round 335 BC, Aristotle analyzed Greek tragedy and drama and stated that all Greek plays have two parts: the complication and the unraveling. The complication is when the protagonist finds trouble as the knot is revealed or tightened. The unraveling is when the knot is loosened; in comedy and drama this normally means that the issues become resolved. In a tragedy, however, it is always an inherent flaw in the protagonist that leads to his undoing, and in the unraveling phase things fall apart. In his work titled Poetics, Aristotle wrote that, “Tragedy is an imitation of a noble and complete action, which through compassion and fear produces catharsis, or a purging.”

510 days ago, we, the American people, were served notice of a complication in our storyline when our own insecurities, our penchant for hate, our colloquial imperialism and our toxic ego caused us to choose Donald Trump as our 45th President. Just as Julius Caesar’s tragic flaw was his arrogance and malignant ambition, so too America suffers the malady of a caustic hubris. We are excessive and obnoxious. We are aggressive and slick. We bend the truth to suit our arc.

And 510 days ago, we made manifest these very attributes when we elected Trump. Our knot had been revealed.

This week, Donald Trump met with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. I watched the live stream as the two of them did the diplomatic dance, the handshakes that Trump always tries to win, the weird pre-pubescent way that Kim makes his face.

They stood there together, one resembling a bad child with dangerous toys, and the other resembling the greasy old guy that his children tolerate only because they don’t want to get written out of the will. And then, after the pomp and circumstance, came the bloviated press conferences, and though it’s very difficult for me to listen to this guy anymore, I had to hear his thoughts on meeting one of the world’s most infamous leaders. What do you think Trump said about Kim Jong-Un? He said that he was “funny and smart.” He said that the two of them had “really good chemistry.” He said that this man who has been cited by the United Nations Human Rights Council for committing acts like arbitrary detention, violation of freedom of thought, and enforced disappearance into prison camps “loved his people.” Then Trump doubled down on the obtuse by announcing that the US will stop military exercises with allies Japan and South Korea.

If you don’t understand what this means, let me explain it in this way. Let’s say your cousin’s next-door neighbor threatened to kill him, so you go over to your cousin’s house and for 25 years, every day you check the locks on the doors and windows so that your cousin knows he’s secure, and then one day you decide that you aren’t going to check the locks anymore and you tell your cousin’s next-door neighbor this before you tell your cousin. That’s what Trump did after meeting with Kim Jong-Un for less than one day.

I don’t know why but hearing that made me think about Aristotle’s analysis of Greek Tragedy. It made me think that we are now

We are doing it all wrong. Just because we have the right to choose our leaders doesn’t mean that we should be choosing based on who we like the best or who we recognize from the television. Just because we are all in some ways different doesn’t mean that we should be treating one another differently based on those differences. And just because

you meet a guy and hit it off for a couple of hours doesn’t mean that you stop helping your friends guard against his tyranny.

Jodine Dorce: Black Men’s Health Matters!

his Saturday, June 16, 10:00am2:00pm, Brooklyn District 16’s Inter-Generational Men’s Health Experience Initiative promises to provide tools, techniques and information to help men and women deal with a crisis of national concern.

Expert sources from a variety of fields will link up to convey the message that Black Men’s Health Matters at the event. One panelist Jodine Dorce, host of “Apollo Music Café,” BRIC-TV in Brooklyn, told Our Time Press what she hopes fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, and individuals take away from the event.

“While I am all about women empowerment and making sure that every girl sees the world as her playground, we have to lift our men up in the process. Me feeling empowered isn’t a diss to a man, it’s empowered so that we can partner in this world and take on this life together as a society. As human kind. Men play such a vital role in society and they too have a lot of pressure on their shoulders. They need

to know that they are loved and valued, they need to take care of themselves (yes, selfcare is a thing for men too) and that its okay to seek help. We, as women need to show our support for our men in every sense of the way.

Ms. Dorce said she also will take away messages to inform her personal ongoing story.

“To speak about my father that’s missing for 5 years because of dementia is healing for me and hopefully inspiring or comforting to someone else that understands that they are not alone. If so, how. I’ve personally invited my friends through text, emails and my social channels. They know this experience of talking about my father is hard for me, so some of my friends are coming to show their support.”

➔➔ Continued from page 3 high expectations, rigorous and challenging academic work, a school environment that is peaceful, safe and supportive of learning, schools that have the necessary supplies and equipment to prepare their children to compete globally; a school leadership and teaching staff that are held accountable by both the school system and the city at large. They are not opposed to “integration and diversity,” but what they really want is what all SHS parents want, a chance for their child to have a chance at a better life, and they are politically smart enough to know that these SHS’s have been granted by way of their entitlement status, the right to be and act like good schools.

Switching the conversation away from a system-wide solution for raising Black and Latino academic achievement levels to a narrow focus on school “integration and diversity” (and who could argue against those worthy objectives?) is an approach that diverts our attention from the real battle of educationally empowering the city’s disenfranchised children of color. It also, in the SHS case, tragically places Asian and other citizens of color into a state of a “fake, but dangerous war.” Professional educators must never fall into the unethical and politically expedient trap of helping one group of students by hurting another group of students.

Asian students have done nothing wrong here. And Black and Latino educators should be personally sensitive to how it feels when a system of denial and entitlement is put in place.

The Black and Latino community, with the help of their civic and political leaders, should hold the City government and the DOE responsible for: Creating a strategic systemic vision as to what to do with Black and Latino students in the city who (despite all odds) are on and above K-8 grade level. These students are essentially educational casualties of their zip codes. Perhaps they attend a school that has such a large number of students who need a lot of support to meet grade-level standards that the entire school tends to function as a daily remediation center; thus, the educational needs of students who are on or above grade level get ignored.

Their school may have an “ever-changing” faculty, too many new and inexperienced teachers, or too many teachers on a “driveby” career experience. Students who don’t receive a qualitative, (academic rigor), quantitative, (time on task) and effective K-8 classroom learning experience will be unprepared to do well on the SHSAT. Expand K-8 Gifted and Talented

Programs (GTP). As superintendent of CSD29Q, I dramatically expanded the number of schools (without the DOE’s permission) that offered GTP programs.

Give students good non-SHS options. In the early 1990’s, Charles Majors (Medgar Evers High School) and I (Science Skills Center High School) proved that the “system” could choose to establish Title 1 schools of academic rigor and excellence.

The “800-lb.” problem the “integration-diversity” discussion is trying to avoid: It’s politically popular to throw shade on the ever-unpopular (until it’s not) standardized

test, like the SHSAT. But Black and Latino students are not going to be able to avoid facing systems of standardized assessments (e.g., AP, SAT, ACT, GRE, PRAXIS, LSAT, MCAT, etc.). If these students are to be successful, they will need the best school-building leadership and classroom instructional practitioners.

We can come up with every kind of integration/diversity plan and scheme imaginable, they will help a symbolically small number of Black and Latino kids. But until NYC public (nonentitled) schools start to be student-centered, and not adultjob-centered, we will never do that which will really make a difference, and that is desegregating quality learning opportunities and high expectations for all NYC children.

Education Expert Michael Johnson is New OTP Recurring Columnist

J

oin us in welcoming columnist Michael A. Johnson! A former teacher, principal, professor, superintendent, etc., he’ll share thoughts on education issues, but primarily focus on supporting parents navigating the school system.

Johnson’s column will address some of the issues that the late, beloved Aminisha Weusi, did in her column, ”The Parents Notebook,” which was a beloved staple.

Johnson knew Weusi for many years and were she still with us, he’d share with her the news of his just-published book, Report to the Principal’s Office: Tools for Building Successful High School Administrative Leadership.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Johnson is a proud product of NYC public schools and graduate of CUNY, SUNY, Bank Street College and Columbia University. His

mother required the best of him and of the school system charged with serving him.

“I arrived to school reading,” says Johnson. “I was a latchkey kid in Crown Heights, my babysitter was the Brooklyn Public Library, Grand Army Plaza, and I fell in love with reading. The Brooklyn Children’s Museum was great and scouting was critical. Gifted and talented middle school was great; we had really good teachers who pushed us at the powerful J.H.S. 294.

As an activist in high school, Johnson was involved in the anti-war and Black student movements. Later, as he took the Swahili name Mpendazi a member of The EAST cultural and educational organization.

Though he knew and admired many educators, he was pre-med until a school advisor suggested teaching science – which changed the course of his life.

“I founded Science Skills, Inc., a

Celeste Morris helped us get a grant; we got another and another and grew from an afterschool program into a 6-day-a-week, and eventually, 6-week summer program with sites at Downstate, Brooklyn Union Gas, Phizer and IBM.“ When New Visions sought the development of 15 theme-based schools, Johnson’s proposal was granted. Over a year-and-a half he developed Science Skills Center High School while also earning both his principal’s and superintendent’s licenses. After seven years as Science Skills principal, he went on to (not in chronological order): found the Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School in D.C.; serve as superintendent in New York and Louisiana; establish programs for the National Science Foundation, CISCO, etc., and to do much more.

Johnson doesn’t believe in retirement.

His new book is a thorough and accessible treatise for aspiring and working principals, public policymakers and parents evaluating principals. He’ll give the commencement address at Science Skills on June 25th and take the stage to face the seniors graduating from the house that Mike built.

Summer Reading List As principal at Science Skills Center High School a while ago, Michael Johnson made sure his students were well read.

They were required to read 100 books over the course of the school year and got a lot of it done in the summer months.

Incoming ninth-graders were given four or five books to help acclimate them, one being 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

Lessons Learned at Edmund Pettus Bridge

Last month’s Rediscovering Lost Values Tour took families back in time to the Civil Rights Era. Below are excerpts from journals kept by the young travelers.

T

he Alabama sun beamed down on the Rediscovering Lost Values Tour while my father, Rev. W. Taharka Robinson, prepared our group to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge by providing us with a history lesson. This lesson illustrated the brutality and evil our ancestors knew they would face and encountered while marching across the bridge for the right to vote.

On March 7, 1965 in Selma, Alabama, now U.S. Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Young and Hosea Williams stood at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge and prayed before the people began to peacefully march across to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Alabama State Troopers stood at the other side of the bridge with clubs and tear gas. As the people marched, they were told to stop marching but they did not. Our ancestors were determined to obtain the right to vote and were willing to die for it, so they continued.

As they marched, State Troopers brutally attacked, trampled and shot tear gas at them.

This brutality was captured on television and outraged the world. A few days later on March 9, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King,

Jr. organized a march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. As he approached, he saw an Army of State Troopers, kneeled down to pray and turned around. The court was then petitioned for protection to protest & march across the bridge. On March 21, 1965, the National Guard protected the people as they marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to Montgomery, Alabama. Marchers walked 12 miles a day and slept in fields and reached the Alabama State Capitol on Thursday, March 25, 1965. By this time, they were 25,000-strong.

Less than five months later, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

As I walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, I felt very honored that my ancestors thought enough of themselves and future generations to fight for the right to vote. They were determined and did not allow racism, intimidation, brutality or injustice to prevent them from moving forward and accomplishing their goal. They persevered! I am personally inspired by my ancestors and hope that all African-Americans honor them by voting.

Who was Edmund Pettus?

After Reverend W. Taharka Robinson gave us a history lesson on the significance of the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the events that led to the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the Rediscovering Lost Values Tour walked across the bridge singing, “We Shall Overcome.” Once the singing stopped, Kylen asked, “Who is Edmund Pettus?” Edmund Winston Pettus was born in Limestone County, Alabama in 1821. He was a lawyer, Confederate general, Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan and a U.S. senator. Edmund Pettus supported the Confederacy and believed in white supremacy. The bridge was named after him 33 years later after he died.

Once I returned to the hotel in Montgomery, I quickly typed Edmund Pettus’ name into Google and was surprised to read who he was. My initial thoughts were how could a bridge be named after such a man. He endorsed slavery, terror, brutality and racism.

As I researched more, I read several articles

justifying his name on the bridge. Most of the articles stated that the Edmund Pettus name on the bridge is not glorifying or endorsing the man but it represents an event in history that changed the world.

A common issue today is renaming statues and monuments that represent racism and oppression. When I think of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, I think of “Bloody Sunday,” a time where my ancestors were attacked by police, shot with tear gas and were brutally beaten because they (peacefully) marched for justice, progression and change (voting rights). Edmund Pettus was not a unifier, he believed in white supremacy and was a leader of the Ku Klux Klan. ith a spacious banquet hall and several carpeted nooks above it, John Wesley United Methodist Church at 260 Quincy Street in historic Bedford-Stuyvesant was the setting for a day of communication, inspiration and healing for women and men. Dubbed “The Mother Wit Conference 2018,” Healing on Fertile Ground, the event’s leadership team strove to present the various facets of fertility.

The phrase “mother wit” in the conference name refers to the deep common sense and know-how with which most people come to Earth.

The workshops, panel discussions and the keynote address were accented by mother wit. The subtitle, “Healing on Fertile Ground,” speaks to the need for the essential elements of earth, fire, air and water to be in a pristine state within the human body and in the environment in order for people to thrive.

This conference came together from the contributions of visionary and producer Shawnee BentonGibson, LMSW/FDLC, whose talents include spiritual counseling, energy work and storytelling. Ms. BentonGibson explained: “Every year, I intuitively select a theme for the Mother Wit Conference and this year what came forth was ‘Healing on Fertile Ground.’ The vision, energy and vibration of this theme were alive and enlivened in every conceivable way on the day of the event. There were moments when the fertile ground of authentic sharing and storytelling produced the fruit of release, relief and restoration.”

Other key conference contributors include Dr. Torrian Easterling, who is the Assistant Commissioner of

the Brooklyn District Public Health Office of the Center for Health Equity.

Easterling served as co-producer and facilitator of the plenary session.

Ashley “Ash” Marie Straw served as one of the conference coordinators and a performing artist within The Mother Wit Performance Ensemble and the Playback Theater performance. The Playback Theater uses improvisation to depict a moment in a person’s life. Shantel Gamble was the other conference coordinator. Ms. Gambles’ passions include holistic health advocacy and the use of alternative healing modalities.

Kinyofu Mteremeshi-Mlimwengu was the facilitator of the Red Tent Women’s Circle. Ms. MteremeshiMlimwengu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Community and Human Services and a Master’s degree in Education. “Kinyofu Mlimwengu’s two focuses are reproductive self-care of women and the social, emotional, cognitive and behavioral development of their children.” Lasting approximately one half-hour, the Red Tent Circle sessions ran throughout the conference. The Red Tent is a luxurious, round enclosed space that is covered in several large, primarily red, colorful cloths. The Red Tent is symbolic of the womb. It is the space for women to discuss womb health, children, family and realizing dreams.

There was much heart and disclosure at the event from presenters and conference attendees. During the panel discussions, Anastasia West and Paige Bellenbaum, in separate panels, revealed their postpartum periods involved an aversion to their infants. One married couple, Lucien and Tracey Humphreys, described their ordeal of living through the loss of their baby. All panelists agreed the common condolences for the loss of a child ring harshly in their ears.

Keynote speaker Dr. Maybank did the uncommon by having her public address cover her effort to have a child though unmarried and over 40. Maybank began by explaining her “career successes such as being Founding Director of the Center for Health Equity and launching the Office of Minority Health were not accomplishments that defined her life.” Rather, having a child within the bonds of marriage was more important to her. Maybank detailed the highs and lows of finding a man who agreed to fertilize her eggs “the old-fashioned way,” only for the man to back out of the arrangement a few days before the appointed date.

Maybank, with controlled emotion, described how, at age 47, her physician dissuaded her from having some of her eggs frozen. At age 50, Dr. Maybank is reconciling herself with her current state of childlessness. Such is the state of industrial or high-tech society. This writer was apprised by a Nigerian national that in the rural areas, it is common for women to bear children in their 60s.
