Fortune Magazine: In 4 Decades Blacks will have no Wealth

September 19, 2017 Many people see progress on racial equity in the U.S. as a steady march forward in which people of color become more equal with their white counterparts as the years go by.

Those are people who don’t pay attention to household wealth figures.

A new report I co-authored, “The Road to Zero Wealth”, looks at the past 30 years of wealth accumulation across racial lines, as well as what the future will bring if current trends continue. Our findings were bleak.

The divide between the wealth of a typical Black family and a typical white family today is vast. A median Black family has just $1,700 in wealth—total assets minus total debt. Thirty years ago, that same family had $6,800 in today’s dollars. Latino families at the median have similarly small assets, just $2,000, and also saw a decline over the past three decades.

White median household wealth, meanwhile, is significantly higher: $116,800, up from $102,000 over the same period.

So Black and Latino families at the middle have seen their wealth slip while white families in the middle saw their wealth rise.

What does this look like projected into the future?

By 2053, just 10 years after the country is projected to become majority nonwhite, Black median families will own zero wealth if current trends continue. Twenty years later, Latino median families will follow suit.

White median families will continue to own six figures.

Even those Black and Latino families

who’ve achieved the traditional markers of middle-class life—a good-paying job and a college degree—still lag far behind their white counterparts in terms of wealth. Black and Latino families with a member holding a four-year degree own just a fifth of the wealth of equivalent white families. In fact, they own less wealth than a white family whose head has just a high school diploma.

These numbers represent a troubling

The enduring legacy of slavery and the Jim Crow era contribute to this growing divide. For instance, just 2% of the heavily subsidized mortgages made available by the Federal Housing Administration in the 30 years following the Great Depression went to nonwhite households. Homes are the biggest asset most middle-class families own, so this sort of federally sanctioned discrimination created a huge, intergenerational disadvantage for the Black and Latino families left out.

Modern public policy decisions rooted in expanding inequality also play a significant role. One such policy is America’s complex system of tax expenditures—essentially discounts handed out to certain groups and

individuals that together total more than half a trillion dollars in public spending each year.

One example is the mortgage interest deduction, a tax break designed to promote homeownership. Unfortunately, the deduction is only available to those who itemize their tax returns, which skews the beneficiaries heavily toward the already-wealthy—who are disproportionally white.

Changing our priorities around tax incentives, as well as investments in bold new programs like Children’s Savings Accounts (CSA) and a federal jobs guarantee, could reverse the decades-long rise in the racial wealth divide. Had Congress instituted a robust universal CSA program in 1979— seeding small savings and investment accounts for all children that could mature as they grew older—the white-Latino wealth gap would have disappeared by now and the white-Black gap would have dropped by 82%.

Policy changes like these would require bold leadership from across the federal government, including Congress and the White House. In today’s political atmosphere, marked most often by scandal and regressive policy decrees as well as congressional gridlock, this does not appear forthcoming.

The good news, however, is that the policies needed to begin to turn the tide on our growing divide are readily at hand. We know what the problem is and how to fix it. Building the political will, and political power, to put such policies in play is the next step.

he trend is undeniable, as a people we are headed back to a slave-like relationship with white America, working everyday but having no assets.

A September 2017 report by the Institute for Policy Studies, “The Road to Zero Wealth”, notes that “while households of color are projected to reach majority status by 2043, if the racial wealth divide is left unaddressed, median Black household wealth is on a path to hit zero by 2053, and median Latino household wealth is projected to hit zero twenty years later”.

“If current trends continue, by 2020, median Black and Latino households stand to lose nearly 18% and 12% of the wealth they held in 2013, respectively, while median white household wealth increases 3%. At that point–just three years from now–white households are projected to own 86 times more wealth than Black households and 68 times more wealth than Latino households.”

And yet, while our wealth melts away, the Atlantic Magazine informs us of the importance to the economy of Black spending, the amount of which is always pointed to with a misplaced hint of pride at Black conferences. “Black buying power is projected to reach $1.2 trillion this year and $1.4 trillion by 2020, according to a report from the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth. Already, Black consumers represent the largest consumers of color group in the marketplace, the report shows”.

So, once again, the national economy is largely dependent on our labor, but now there is no need for the whip. The line starts at the right.

If a national report came out saying that Black savings were projected to reach $1 trillion next year spent as mush as possible with Black businesses, world markets would be roiled and immigration rocked. But the elite sleep easy with no fear of a mass escape from the economic plantation. The individually-crafted mental chains have been centuries in the making. Coupled with institutions including criminal justice, education, banking and all the others, each having inequality in their DNA, we have the same battles fought decade after decade.

Time is passing and there is only peripheral change.

A 2013 Pew Charitable Trust report found that those born poor have a 70% chance of staying poor all their lives, and according to the foregoing trends, as a people, we will be back in “Bandana days”, watching the rest of the world charge into the future, as wave after wave of immigrants get their head start opening businesses in Black communities, supported by Black people and then move on.

All oblivion is local, and here in New York, with its 17 billion budget and the education system, we would hope to see a coordinated effort to prevent the decline, but we hear only “this is the best we can do” as we see that local education levels are among the lowest in the world and where moving the needle for spending for Black American firms from .3% to .4% percent of the city budget would be a major achievement; not yet achieved but we’ve been assured the city administration is doing very best they can. Biographical Sketch Submitted by the Family Sam Pinn, son of Samuel J and Ethel Crouch Pinn, of Wicomico Church and Rice, Virginia, was a life-long resident of Bedford Stuyvesant and co-founder and Chair of the pioneering Fort Greene Council Inc. (formerly Fort Greene Senior Citizens Council) since its inception in May of 1973. Under his leadership the Council has expanded its sponsorship of senior centers, offering a range of comprehensive services, from their first center located in Fort Greene-Clinton Hills to its present sponsorship of 13 centers located throughout Brooklyn. The expansion also included a critically needed meals-on-wheels program serving more than 800 meals daily to many disabled and frail elderly in Central Brooklyn; two child care centers; COMPASS, an after school program; and UPK for ALL, serving more than 400 young people between the ages 2-14 years.

A major part of Sam’s leadership was focused on Jazz966, a performing arts program he created and organized for seniors and the public-at-large in November 1990 - the Council’s highly successful citywide jazz program. This great musical venue has become one of the largest and leading

jazz settings in New York City. Sam’s initial motivation for establishing Jazz966 was to make quality African music (jazz & the blues) specifically available to Brooklyn and Long Island residents at very affordable prices.

As a result, some top named performers in the field of jazz have appeared at Jazz966, including Wynton Marsalis, Randy Weston, Lou Donaldson, Gloria Lynne, Houston Person and Etta Jones, Bill Doggett, John Lucien, Dakota Staten, Pucho, Barry Harris, Monty Alexander, Louis Hayes, Gary Bartz, Larry Ridley, Irene Reid, Roland Alexander, Sonny Fortune, Bob Cunningham, and Montego Joe, to name just a few. In turn, Sam also preserved his site (Jazz966) as an important musical spot for other recognized stars as well as a showground for many who are beginning their careers.

As part of his advocacy for the elderly, for five years Sam hosted and produced a weekly radio show formerly aired on WNYE, 91.5FM, “The Grand Ones.” The program focused on local and national issues impacting the elderly and featured discussions and interviews with a variety of seniors, gerontologists as well as other professionals in the fields of housing, social security, health care, recreation and education.

For sixteen years Pinn chaired Independent Brooklyn CORE where he was a catalyst and gamechanger in many of Brooklyn’s on-going struggles for social justice and political empowerment. He was

at the forefront in the struggle against mob and police violence against black people and the reformation of policies and procedures related to NYC’s Board of Education and Human Resources Administration. As a result of many of these disputes and struggles, Pinn was arrested more than ten times for civil disobedience.

Moreover, because of Pinn’s enduring interest in educational reform he was elected to Central Brooklyn’s Community School Board #16 for which he chaired three years.

He was instrumental in initiating policies that dramatically improved the districts overall reading and math scores as well as its attendance rating.

Dr. Pinn was Professor Emeritus of Social Science at Ramapo College of New Jersey where he taught for 34 Years. For 20 years, he chaired the Africana Studies program as well as founded its Institute of Africana Studies. He also created Ramapo’s highly acclaimed Summer Study Abroad program in Kenya and East Africa. The program helped to broaden students cross and intercultural understanding and knowledge of Kenya and Africa’s socio-geographical history and culture.

Dr. Pinn had a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Morgan State University, a Masters of Social Work Degree from Rutgers University and two Doctors of Law degrees bestowed by Mary Holmes College and Morgan State University. He also has the professional requirements prescribed by law to practice as a Licensed Master of Social ➔➔ Continued on page 8

RIP: GLORIA HORSFORD TORRUELLA My niece, Gloria Horsford Torruella, 39, joined the ancestors on December 29. The fifth of Karen and Rocky Horsford’s nine children, one of four daughters. Gloria’s life was short but rich with good family values and rituals. Following the family tradition, she worked in real estate and helped manage her sister’s Cove Lounge. She attended New York public schools and earned an associate

2016, Gloria gave birth to twins, Skylar and David. Her children lit up her life in ways large and small. On Christmas Eve at her sister Alyah’s home, Gloria looked so radiant and happy, qualities befitting the night. She died in her sleep five days later.

Her funeral service will be held at Mt. Olivet Church, 201 Lenox Avenue at 120th Street in Harlem on Thursday, January 4th at 10 am.

TRANSITIONS RIP: Giselle King Porter, 74, passed on December 14th. The only child of Lillian and Alonzo King, Giselle is a native New Yorker who attended and graduated from The Modern School, a Black private school founded in 1933; Walden School and New York University, where she majored in education. She cut her professional teeth in hospitals like Roosevelt in Manhattan, then at the Trump Pavilion Nursing Home on the Jamaica Hospital campus in Queens, where she worked for 37 years and wore many hats - as a recreation therapist, a go-to manager who filled her days trying to make the world a better place for the nursing home’s longterm and short-term residents. She married John Porter in 1973, a union which lasted until his death in 2007. A dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker, she was a culture maven enamored of museums, theater, concerts and jazz clubs.

Weah is encouraging Liberians overseas, whose remittances are roughly 25% of the national GDP, to come back home to rebuild a country still in recovery from the civil war (1989-2003). Liberia’s major industry sectors are mining, oil and electricity. Its main exports are rubber and iron ore.

According to an Associated Press story, “1st White Farmer Gets Land Back under Zimbabwe’s new leader”, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who succeeded Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe. After a military coup, not named as such, ousted Mugabe, Mnangagwa assumed interim leadership of the nation until formal August elections. He vowed that Zimbabwe was open for business and said that he would undo Mugabe’s land reform policies. Mnangagwa’s action does not sound like a democratic formula for broad voter support.

Crown Heights Affordable Housing Conflict

here is something stirring to watch neighbors join together for a cause.

A case in point is the struggle to maintain the architectural integrity of the Dean Sage Mansion in northern Crown Heights at 839 St. Marks Avenue. Since March 10, 2016, when the Institute for Community Living (ICL) presented its project plan for this property before Brooklyn Community Board No. 8, neighborhood residents and the Crown Heights North Association, Dean Street Block Association, Friends of Brower Park, Inc. and St. Marks Avenue Independent Block Association have developed a strengthening resolve to save this historic landmark building from augmentation.

This three-story High Victorian Gothic residential building has served as supportive housing for mentally ill people since 2005.

The property is used for various community meetings and the garden, featuring an ornamental arrangement of flower beds (i.e., parterre), is a site for community art exhibits. The Dean Sage Mansion is located in the Crown Heights North Historic District and is notable for its particular history which includes Dean Sage’s visits from Mark Twain and its architecture.

The building is owned by ICL. ICL successfully acquired a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC) to construct one five-story brick apartment building that would stand on the north side and the east side of 839 St. Marks Avenue within the property lines. The community objects to this plan based on the additional bulk on the lot, the aesthetics, and that the two additional buildings would be designated for affordable housing.

Kelly Carroll, Director of Advocacy and Community Outreach for the Historic District Council, submitted an Expert Affidavit in Support of the Petition on/ or about September 26, 2016 (St. Marks Independent Block Association, et. al. vs. Meenakshi Srinivasan, Landmark Preservation Commission Chair), wherein “total bulk was not an issue discussed publicly” nor made a request that ICL reduce the bulk.

More recently, those in disfavor of the project have circulated both online and paper petitions in 2017. During the spring and summer months, Brooklyn Community Board Chair Nizjoni Granville, Crown

Heights North Association member Ethel Tyus, Bergen-Kingston Block Association member Desmond Atkins, Friends of Brower Park, Robyn Berland and others have visited Senator Velmanette Montgomery and Council member Robert Cornegy and attended LPC public hearings.

It is Derrick Hilbertz, a resident of Crown Heights North, who initiated an Article 78 proceeding. Article 78 proceedings “seek to challenge actions of administrative agencies and other government bodies. The petitioner is the one who files a special proceeding.

The respondent is the agency, corporation or other governmental body that answers the petition”. Representing Mr. Hilbertz is Philip Solomon, Esq. of Jacqueline McMickens & Assoc. The case is titled “Derrick Hilbertz v. City of New York” 0520815/2017, Justice Katherine Levin presiding.

Derrick Hilbertz decided to start the action in November 2016 but held off because “the process is on hold until the development is actually certified. Once certified, they (attorney) can proceed with the suit”. Between October 26, 2017 and December 18, 2017, 100 documents were submitted as evidence, most notably, Article 78 on October 30, 2017 and the Restraining Order on November 20, 2017, which stops any building activity.

There have been five appearances before Justice Levin: November 15, 2017; November 17, 2017; November 28, 2017; December 21, 2017; and again, December 21, 2017. The next court date has not been determined as of the writing of this story.

Ethel Tyus, a lawyer retired from the NYC Office of the Comptroller, explains: “This legal contest is undertaken to avoid setting an unfortunate precedent that will allow developers to fill in every nook and cranny in an area that is already more densely populated than areas of New York City that aren’t designated ‘historic districts’.” “(The) Petitioners support the construction of truly affordable housing in the community district and encourages ICL to build higher on other properties that they own and/or work with faith communities in the district to use moribund properties (vacant lots & boarded-up buildings) to create housing that people can really afford (not where, as ICL proposes, one has to pay 30% to 57% of one’s income for shelter).”

Sam Pinn—A gallant freedom fighter and Brooklyn legend ■■

n one way, I was surprised that Sam Pinn was at my book-signing in Brooklyn at the Restoration Center in September, but in another way, I shouldn’t have been. It took me several minutes to recognize him since I hadn’t seen him in years. Then came his melodious voice-- “I am Sam Pinn.” And then a flood of memories we shared over the years, mainly my reporting on his phenomenal political and cultural leadership.

Photographer George Johnson caught our moment of reminiscence and it was posted on Facebook and consequently provided me with all the information needed to begin and complete his obituary.

It was from the ever-alert Bernice Green, the publisher of this paper, that I learned of Pinn’s passing. And I was immediately propelled back to the days when I first began discovering what a vital asset he was in our struggle for freedom, justice and self-determination.

Years before I started as a journalist in New York City, Pinn was already wellalong in his activist career, particularly his unwavering commitment to civil rights

as the chair of the Brooklyn Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). The Rev. Herb Daughtry, in his book No Monopoly on Suffering, recalled a moment in the summer of 1977 when he and Pinn, Albert Vann and Jitu Weusi began forging a movement in response to police brutality, most notably the killing of Randolph Evans. “Vann was an assemblyman in the 56th AD, and Weusi was founder and leader of The East, a cultural and educational organization….” Daughtry wrote. “Pinn later became a professor at Ramapo College in New Jersey.”

Daughtry commented further on Pinn’s reflective and keen analytical mind, which were some of the reasons he would chair the Randolph Evans Crises Fund Board of Directors. A year later, when the Black United Front (BUF) was formed, Pinn would

be among the key members as he would be when the National Black United Front was created in 1980. During this same period, Pinn founded the Fort Greene Senior Citizens Center while teaching his courses at Ramapo College.

Among the encomiums on social media for Pinn was this one from Vann. “A son of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Sam contributed mightily to our survival, development and pride. Our collective hearts go out to his wife Doris, their sons and other family members and loved ones. We thank the Creator for Sam’s long and fruitful life, and significant contributions he made to our ‘rise’.”

Steve Cromity recounted Pinn’s unstinting dedication to the perpetuation of Black music, especially his founding of Jazz 966, which was launched in 1990. “At the site

of 966 Fulton St.,” Cromity posted online, “There is also a Day Care Center and Senior Center, both having tremendous utilization.

Sam was what I call ‘A Nation Builder’.”

Similar tributes were posted by Gary Williams, Rachel Brumfield, Eric Frazier and Baba Wesley Gray.

“He walked the way he talked, a true defender of our Kulture,” posted Menes de Griot, “A man of integrity, and 966 will never be the same.”

Fred Logan, a writer and activist in Pittsburgh, expressed fond memories of Pinn and his generosity in an e-mail. “I remember well staying at his home in 1981 when I went to a NBUF conference with Sanjulo, Naisha and Famamisha from Pittsburgh,” Logan wrote.

That same warmth and camaraderie is what I experienced at the book-signing and after he purchased a book and signed it for him, he insisted that I pose with him for a photograph. It was an honor to stand next to someone who I had admired so many years from a distance. During our brief moment together, Sam reminded that it had been some years since I had visited the Senior Citizens Center, and I agreed. But before I could complete another sentence, I was besieged by a group of admirers wanting their books signed. In his customary and dignified way, Sam slipped away allowing me to bathe in the recognition that was part of his remarkable life.

I am sure there will be endless praise for him as the day arrives for his homegoing, and I have no doubt that he will join that illustrious band of comrades and ancestors, including a few from Brooklyn, such as Jitu Weusi, Sonny Carson and Robert Taylor, Viola Plummer’s son.

Our collective hearts go out to his wife Doris, their sons and other family members and loved ones. We thank the Creator for Sam’s long and fruitful life, and the significant contributions he made to our “rise”.

It is, of course, humbling to realize that even the giants among us must make their earthly transition. The Pinn family are people of faith. They can take comfort in Sam’s spiritual landing. As we pray for strength and understanding to Sam’s family, we thank God for his consequential existence. Farewell my friend, comrade, colleague and neighbor.

Al Vann SAM PINN was a huge contributor to African-American life in Brooklyn, has gone to be with the ancestors yesterday. His founding of Jazz 966 was only part of the many contributions he made to the community. At the site of 966 Fulton St., there is also a Day Care Center and Senior Center, both having tremendous utilization. Sam was what I call “A Nation Builder”. Much more will be said about him in the coming days. But I know, years ago, he was head of Brooklyn CORE and he had been an educator and I believe he

held a doctorate. I also believe some street or building will be named after him in the future, perhaps 966 will change its name. I›ll miss Sam. May he RIP as he was “a good and faithful servant”.

1990, the same year Sam opened 966Jazz, I formed the Andy Kirk Foundation as a salute to the late pioneer tenor sax player.

Of course, I had heard about Sam Pinn from his earlier days as a community activist with Al Vann, Jitu Weusi and others. It was natural that I would go to Sam’s place to listen to the sweet sounds of history Friday nights right in the neighborhood. And I could dance there, too!

Sam set up such a beautiful arrangement for the community and for the guest musicians who come through there. Jazz966 was, and is, I think, the only place in Brooklyn where you can hear this kind of music from world-class musicians.

I also admired his effort to keep jazz alive in the senior centers, and with our youth and other programs. You see, Sam and I are about the same age, and everybody knows I enjoy dancing to this kind of music; it’s a form of exercise for me. And listening to jazz with other jazz lovers is a beautiful thing. That’s

why I think Sam was one of the great jazz promoters of our time.

So, I was very saddened to hear that he is gone. In keeping jazz swinging, he gave us a reason to look forward to having a ball on Friday nights. And I will continue to look forward to being there because I know he’ll be there.

Sam was a strong community activist and an ardent proliferator of the growth and preservation of jazz and culture in our community. He was an educator who was conscious and who taught by word and more importantly, by his actions.

He was the innovator of Jazz at 966, which has been successful for over a quarter-century! He was a family man who knew the value of love and support. He was a friend that left a legacy that will impact the shape of Brooklyn history and the evolution of jazz for years to come. May he Rest in Peace!

Gary Williams To the Bedford Stuyvesant community, another tree has fallen. The man was a giant.

He was there in the beginning when The East was being formed. He did a lot of things in Newark NJ with Amiri Baraka. Sam was of Education. In tandem with this services Sam was employed part time for 20 years as a teacher-in-charge and program specialist in Community School District #16’s evening and summer community education programs.

After eight years of active and reserve duty, Sam was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves as a 1st Lieutenant.

Advocationally, Sam served as: a Scoutmaster for Throop 583 in Central Brooklyn; and as a basketball coach for “Brooklyn’s Young Professionals,” a basketball team of high school upperclassmen deeply committed to community development and sports. He instilled in them the discipline, dedication and commitment he experienced as a Boy Scout in Troop 259 at Concord Baptist Church and as a basketball star at Erasmus Hall High School.

For more than 20 years Sam was an avid jogger-having completed seven marathons in New York, San Francisco and Senegal, West Africa and over sixty 10Ks and ½ marathons. He enjoyed playing chess, curating paintings, and reading. Sam also acquired a reputation as a solid patron of the visual arts as indicated by several art

I read the tributes to Sam Pinn in OTP. They are lovely. He was a professor with Ramapo College for many years and we will be observing his passing at an annual remembrance ceremony next year. Best wishes for a peaceful new year.

Activist Erica Garner Dies

rica Garner-Snipes, the activist who advocated for police reform in the use of deadly force during arrests, died of a heart attack, last Saturday (30).

Garner became involved in activism following the death of her father in 2014 after a New York City police officer placed him in an illegal chokehold during an arrest.

Born on May 29, 1990 at Woodhull Hospital, she was the daughter of Esaw Garner Snipes and Eric Garner, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She was the oldest of four children born to Eric and Esaw.

Beginning a month after his death and for the following year, Garner led twice-weekly marches visiting the scene of her father’s death, visits which the media labeled a “diein.” She also marched in Black Lives Matter demonstrations and other protest events, and set up a foundation in her father’s name.

The aim of the Garner Way Foundation, is to “engage communities all over the world in social justice issues through political awareness, music, arts and activism.”

Garner stated that she believed her father’s death had more to do with police misconduct than race, and in 2017, she rejected

a meeting with the United States Justice Department to discuss the circumstances surrounding her father’s death.[.

During the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries, Garner supported Bernie Sanders, and appeared in an advertisement for him as well as on the campaign trail. “She was a warrior to the end. She stood up for justice for her father,” the Rev. Al Sharpton said in his announcement of Ms. Garner’s death at a New York City hospital.

Garner’s official Twitter account, run by her family and friends since she became ill, asked that she be remembered as a mother, daughter, sister and aunt with a heart “bigger than the world.”

In 2014, Ms. Garner’s father was stopped on Staten Island for selling untaxed cigarettes and died after a police officer subdued him with a chokehold. Eric Garner’s last words, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry and his death touched off protests throughout the nation. A grand jury declined to indict the officer; The city agreed to pay a $6 million civil settlement.

Garner’s mother, Esaw Snipes, told The New York Times previously that Garner,

who gave birth four months ago, had learned during the pregnancy that she had heart problems.

A CT scan showed that Garner, who was being treated at a hospital in Brooklyn, suffered “major brain damage from a lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest,” according to a statement posted last week.

“When you report this, you remember she was human: mother, daughter, sister, aunt,” according to a tweet Saturday on her Twitter account. “Her heart was bigger than the world. It really, really was. She cared when most people wouldn’t have. She was good.

She only pursued right, no matter what. No one gave her justice.”

A Justice Department probe into Garner’s death has yet to conclude.

Erica Garner spoke out against police abuse. She endorsed Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders for president and appeared in advertisement for the senator from Vermont, who posted a statement on Twitter earlier in the week in response to the news about her health.

“My thoughts are with Erica Garner,” he said. “I have had the privilege of joining with

her at a number of events and was deeply impressed with her courage and insights.

Another post said, “She gave her last breath fighting for justice which still has not been won.”

Garner had two children. Shortly after the birth of her son Eric, named after her father, in August 2017, she suffered a heart attack. Doctors subsequently found that her heart was enlarged. On December 23, 2017, she suffered a second heart attack, after which she fell into a coma. She was left with “major brain damage,” leading to her death on December 30, 2017. She died at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn surrounded by her family.

The New York Civil Liberties Union issued a statement saying that Garner “showed incredible courage and remarkable resolve” and “bravely transformed her unspeakable personal pain in[to] political power as she became a leader in the fight for police reform.” The NAACP also issued a statement acknowledging her leadership and strength.

A vigil was held last night in Tompkinsville on Staten Island.

Let’s have a Black History Year

hen I was in the 8’s* at the Little Red Schoolhouse, a very progressive private school in “the city”, we had projects for Black History Month. I was part of a team of two. Our project was Sojourner Truth.

After school, my teammate and I would go to her house and work on our “project”.

One day her father was listening to us discuss how best to present our material and he said: “Why Black History Month?

Why don’t they have a White History Month?” Neither his daughter nor I knew what to say. It seemed quite reasonable.

Why should Blacks have a whole month to themselves? I was a grown-up before I realized….because whites have all twelve months and we are excluded from eleven of them.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we didn’t need a Black History Month? If Black history was part of the traditional American curriculum and if African history were as much a part of it as European history?

Slavery built this country.

Asians built this country.

Women built this country.

Jews built this country.

Gay people built this country.

Native Americans ARE this country.

How often are they included in the history books? If it weren’t for Howard Zinn, we would all be led to believe that heroic, white men were the only “founders of this nation”.

Not to mention Jesus Christ. Talk about exclusion. For most of my life Jesus Christ is portrayed as a wussy-looking white man with long, often golden, locks. His skin is always what Crayola crayons used to call “flesh”-colored, and his hair always long and straight.

Even in “Jesus Christ Superstar”, where they acknowledge that Judas is a man of color and of the same ilk as Jesus, the parts are played by two different races. Judas is Black and Jesus is white, yet both are Hebrews.

There are very few descriptions of what Jesus looked like in the Bible. The few that there are makes it clear that he was a man of color.

In Revelation 1:14, 15 - His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; Now, of the three races, only one of them, that I know of, has woolly hair, mine.

How can there be any doubt that the man was one of African descent? Many people who are so afraid that Jesus could actually be a Black man, have said that since the description says that the wool hair was white as snow that it could be that of a halo over his head. Okay, that seems illogical, but even if it were true, why this second reverence to woolly hair in Daniel?

Daniel 7:9 - I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire.

So, now, let’s talk about skin. Crayola

does have a brass color and it is definitely a far deeper hue than their “flesh” color.

Once again, those who claim that Jesus looked like a fey Italian and couldn’t possibly have even one drop of Black blood in him, have trouble when the brass; i.e., brown skin tone, comes up again in Ezekiel.

Ezekiel 40:3 - And he brought me thither, and, behold, [there was] a man, whose appearance [was] like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate.

Why is it that the very thought of Jesus being a man of color, a man with African origins, makes people frightened? Why is it that including African-American heroes in history books makes history writers so fearful that they exclude them altogether?

When I taught American History at Brooklyn’s Wingate High School, the history book, which was the text for the school, had one paragraph on slavery from the viewpoint of the slave and it said that the slaves were happy with their lot because they had a free place to live and three meals a day. That is not an exact quote, but almost.

It did not mention Salem Poor, Peter Salem, James Armistead Lafayette and their heroic activities during the Revolutionary War despite the fact that George Washington did not want Blacks to be in the military. It did not mention William A. Jackson, Robert Smalls, Miles James, Andre Callioux or James Stanley Gardner and how they participated in the Civil War. If you never heard of these guys, it’s not your fault. They are totally excluded from the traditional American History curriculum.

There were one million Black soldiers in the segregated Army of WWII. They had to listen to General Patton routinely refer to them as “niggers” and keep on fighting for this country which was supposedly so democratic.

It was the all-Black, 800-man, 761st that liberated the Buchenwald and Dachau Nazi-run Jewish death camps. That feat is not recorded in your history books because it was not recorded by the Army, an oversight, I am sure.

If you want to know who any of those people mentioned above are, you have to Google them yourself. The number of Black people excluded from history is so long that it will take you more than a month to become familiar with them.

My aunt Rachel West (Dorothy West’s mother) claimed everybody she liked was Black from Beethoven to Dinah Shore. She did this because there were so many Black people excluded from history or “whitened” by historians that it seemed logical to assume that if she liked ‘em, they were one of hers. Legitimate African-American historians spend hours trying to prove that George Washington was partially Black or J. Edgar Hoover. We don’t need those luminaries on our side of the ledger, we have celebrities far more brilliant than they; the trouble is, our celebrities are not celebrated.

What is it that European-based historians fear so much that they often fudge Black lineage? History writers would rather paint a portrait of Thomas Jefferson as a

The episode that you particularly spotlighted is part of an ongoing series

One might think that historians don’t want to paint a portrait of a redheaded child abuser (after all, Sally Hemmings was only 14 years old), but the real answer is they just don’t want to acknowledge all those generations of Black Jeffersons which followed.

What is the big fear? What is the advantage of keeping us out? What do you gain by institutionalized racism? What do you get when you repeat over and over that we are a “less intelligent” and “violent” people?

Julian Bond said it best when he said: “Violence is Black children going to school for 12 years and receiving 6 years’ worth of education.”

Julian Bond This is not the ranting of a man with a chip on his shoulder, this is a fact.

This is an intelligent, educated and really funny man who said that “Harvard is the Morehouse of the East”.

He had a way of telling people that Black people were not “just as good as”, that we were superior in a panoply of ways which never even occurred to them.

Could that be what traditional historians fear? That we are superior?

It is easy to forget how resilient and brilliant we have had to be and still are. If others had been dealt our hand, they probably wouldn’t have made it.

It can be scary to say that Black lives are superior, and one can easily take a lot of flak for just saying it aloud, but Julian had a way of saying it that made sense and as a result, made people feel comfortable. If European historians don’t feel comfortable, they can totally erase your entire lineage.

Black lives don’t just matter, they are of discussions that Cultural Caravan TV will be having with award-winning historian and author Dr. William Seraile, Professor Emeritus of Africana Studies at Lehman College which are entitled “Seraile Commentaries”.

These commentaries will spotlight different aspects of African-American history, culture and concerns. Dr. Seraile had shared with me that he really appreciated the OTP

When my fellow classmate, J e a n Carey, married M a x Bond and her name changed to Jean Carey B o n d , Max Bond it never crossed my mind that her husband was Julian Bond’s cousin. To be married to Max was spectacular enough; to have Julian in the same family was an extravaganza too rich for me to take in. To this day, each time I see Jean, I stammer and sputter as if she were a rock star (which she is).

Julian was my hero because he understood the economics of poverty (for all), he understood root causes and, not to mention, he was easy on the eye.

It will take me a while to get over his passing on. Let’s hope others like Van Jones will replace him.

As Jenny Laing Cooper, the white British historian said: “(African-American Black people that is) ARE better because they have come upright through all the shit they have put up with over the years - and still brilliant in too many ways to tell.”

Spiritually, slavery was worse for white people than it was for Blacks. It gave white people a callus, unfeeling attitude towards their fellow man which has lasted for many generations, and for some, to this very day.

Spiritually, slavery gave Blacks the necessity of hope and empathy which has enabled them to adjust and survive. The ability to make adjustments is the very definition of intelligence. So, let’s have a Black History year. Let’s include the accomplishments of Black people in all of our historical writings all year long. * The 8’s is equivalent to 3rd grade in public school...It is the class for 8-year-olds. article and the layout that was done. In addition, I ‎ also appreciated the placement of the story as it leaves our community with “food for thought” as they move into 2018. Happy Kwanzaa!!! Happy New Year!!!

The Gift that Keeps on Giving ■■

n September 1985, the Black Alumni Association of Brooklyn College bestowed a gift to their alma mater, a bust of civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr. “The officers of the association felt that a bust of Dr. King would help fulfill an obligation we have to current and future generations of Black students at Brooklyn College,” said Marcia Goldman, 57, then-president of the association. “We wanted to make a strong statement of support for their educational and career aspirations.”

Prominently located at the foot of the stairs leading to the college’s library, the bronze bust serves as an inspiration for

all students. It was sculpted by Brooklyn artist Bo Walker, who was known for his commemorative busts of Black political and cultural leaders. He also created a bust of Paul Robeson for the library of the Columbia University Law School. Walker was given a Presidential Medal from the college in 1985 in recognition of his contributions to the Black community.

(Editor’s Note: Henderson Day [Bo] Walker, who was awarded Brooklyn College’s Presidential Medal [1985], in recognition of his contributions to Black culture, died of pneumonia a year later in July 1986. He was 35. Mr. Walker also created a sculpture of Ms. Goldman, currently among her family’s prized possessions.) On Ms. Goldman’s team was community activist and educator Earline M. James, a colleague of Ms. Goldman,

The Future of the Jets

By now, we all know that for a seventh consecutive season, the New York Jets will not make the playoffs after posting a winloss record of 5-11. With a recent article I wrote a few weeks ago about the New York Giants and their future plans, I wanted to give the “Gang Green” fans some love. We all know by now that the 2018 NFL Draft in April will be loaded with tons of talent with good, quality players to be available in pretty much every round. It is by no surprise and

not to add insult to injury, but the Jets need an upgrade in almost every position. The team holds the No. 6 pick in the draft followed by several other picks as the draft moves forward. The five teams before them, with the exception of the Indianapolis Colts (they have Andrew Luck), may very well select a quarterback, which may lead the Jets to turn to free agency should they lose out on one of the prized quarterback class. Although the organization has gone on record to say they’d like to re-sign quarterback Josh McCown, if the Jets are in the midst of drafting one of the top-tier QB’s, they will not hesitate to do so. We all see how the Ryan Fitzpatrick re-signing didn’t go as planned.

With a projected $100 million that will be available to them in cap space, the free agent class is a very deep class of talent

who could be potential fits for the Jets. The team has decided to bring back both General Manager Mike Maccagnan and Head Coach Todd Bowles through 2020. If Gang Green should lose out on a quarterback in the draft, the team could have some level of interest in Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins. Cousins has been one of the most productive QB’s the past couple of years and although he will be 30 next season, he is still young enough to be an answer for the Jets when you talk long-term. Another position the Jets need to address is at running back.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell will probably be one of, if not the hottest, free agent on the market. With four years of experience and at 25 years old, Bell will be a huge upgrade for the Jets. Current backs Matt Forte might retire due to his nagging

knee he has dealt with the past couple of years and Bilal Powell has not established himself as a No.1 caliber-type running back.

After speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Jets acting owner Christopher Johnson has promised Jet fans that the team will be active in free agency. With the money they will have as well as the draft picks, expect the Jets to sign and draft the players they feel will help them in the long run.

single mother who spent her savings to move her family into a new apartment was overcome with worry when her son disappeared for hours—but unbeknownst to her, her loving children were planning a Christmas surprise.

Sophia Reed recently moved to Oklahoma City after her husband suddenly left her. The move used up most of her savings thanks to the security deposit and rent, and Reed had planned to share a nice Christmas dinner with her four children in lieu of buying presents she couldn’t afford.

“We was expecting a nice dinner for Christmas and just be together and just show love to each other,” Reed told CBS-11.

But as the family settled into their new home and surroundings, Reed became increasingly concerned as her 13-year-old son, Darius, kept disappearing for hours on end. So, the worried mother turned to the police while Darius was out on one of his mysterious excursions in mid-December, and that’s when it was revealed what her son and his siblings were up to.

“I was afraid he was going to get in trouble,” Reed’s daughter, Deneisha, told Oklahoma 4 News. “I just didn’t want to say anything because it would blow the whole

thing.”

Darius told Officer Roland Russell of the Oklahoma City Police Department that he was collecting hundreds of cans to raise money and bring some Christmas cheer to his mother, and at that point, the young boy had collected $13.

“On my way out to my car, I go down the stairs and I see him sitting there,” Russell told KOCO News. “It was, like probably, 30 degrees outside, and he had a little T-shirt on.”

After learning about what he was up to, Russell decided to keep Darius’ secret and went back to his station to spread the word with the intention of helping the 13-year-old on his mission. With Russell’s support, the department was able to raise about $800 to buy gifts for Reed and her children, just in time for Christmas.

“I started getting messages from all kinds of people,” Russell said. “I didn’t think I was going to, and it ended up turning into a pretty big deal.”

As for Darius, he said there was no question why he would go out for those long hours in search of dozens of cans.

“I just wanted to do something for my mama,” he told Oklahoma 4 News.

Ramapo College of New Jersey Remembers Professor Sam Pinn

ear Colleagues, Students, and Friends, I regret to report the passing of Sam Pinn, Professor Emeritus of Social Science. Sam joined Ramapo College in 1974 and retired in 2007. He was committed to advancing the College’s mission and, in particular, its pillar of intercultural understanding.

Sam was credited as being the lead architect of the College’s Africana Studies Program and was the recipient of the Fred and Florence Thomases Award in 2005 for significant and ongoing contributions to the development of the College. While with Ramapo, Sam also developed the Kenya Studies Abroad Program which was among the first programs of its kind to provide Ramapo students with first-hand knowledge of East Africa. Sam also served several terms as President of the Minority Faculty and Staff Association and as Faculty Advisor to the Black Student Union.

Sam also hosted and produced a weekly radio program on WNYE called The Grand Ones which focused on national issues and concerns of the elderly. He was described by colleague Sam Rosenberg as a “man of action and quiet dignity,” Rosenberg noted

that Sam dedicated his life to using his intellectual ability to uplift and aid others at Ramapo and in his beloved community of Brooklyn. In Brooklyn, he served as Founder and Chairman of the Fort Greene Council Inc. which supports several senior citizen centers, day care centers, and intergenerational programs that offer a range of educational, social, and recreational services for Central Brooklyn’s young and elderly. Sam was also a jazz enthusiast and co-founded Jazz966, a well-recognized intergenerational cultural program. He was routinely published in the The City Sun on matters including racial injustice, community empowerment, and education. Sam was a blend of scholar and activist who gained the respect of many both within and beyond the College.

Information regarding services for Sam are not available at this time, however, a collection of tributes in his memory have been published by Our Time Press. Our thoughts are with the Pinn family and the many members of the communities that Sam’s life enriched.

Basically, the committee submitted a proposal which included the scope of the work to Robert L. Hess, the college president, and his staff. Everyone was in favor of the idea and the only thing they had to do in the process was to identify a specific location where the statue would rest.

DJ: What about the artist, Bo Walker?

EMJ: Marcia knew Bo personally, and asked him to create the artwork for this venture. The style of the sculpture and the material content was determined by two committee members. Bo, however, selected the specific depiction of the artwork we see today on the Brooklyn College campus.

DJ: How was the project funded?

EMJ: All of the fundraising was done by the Black Alumni Association. Letters were generated from a database. Additionally, social events including dances -- which were prominent back in the day -- generated ALL the money for the project. It took us a little more than a year to raise the revenue required.

DJ: Do you remember the unveiling of Mr. Walker’s commemorative bust?

EMJ: It attracted several hundred community residents, leaders, dignitaries, students, faculty and many others. They witnessed the President of the College welcoming the new addition of Black art to the campus.
