New Twist in ‘Case of the Missing Millions’ House Sale

By Maitefa Angaza

o, the mystery deepens around the multimillion-dollar house that sold for a song (a sad song) recently in Prospect Heights, it appears the house is now back on the market – or should we say, the auction block. OTP readers will recall that the property at 591 Carlton Avenue (said to need extensive renovation), was sold earlier this year for $10,000, and then for $50,000. The property is now listed on the Public Administrator's website with an opening bid of $2,250,000. The house has certainly been the subject of controversy and, perhaps, more than a dose of obfuscation. But neighborhood advocate Keith

Reid, who was a valuable resource for the story, contacted us again to say that the house is once again for sale, listed as part of a May 2nd auction. Upon returning from a trip recently, Reid was told by a neighbor that the property was being cleaned out and furniture moved out onto the street. The following day he passed by the house to see two workers sitting on the stoop and a couch, refrigerator and other items in the front yard. He asked what was going on with the property. “They told me that the City Administrator [the Public Administrator] had hired them to clean out the building in preparation for an auction,” said Reid. “One of them said that it appeared no one had lived at the property since the 90s. I informed him that the woman who lived

there had died just last year and that it was kind of unusual for the building to be auctioned off so quickly. He relied that this goes on all the time now. “It appears to me,” Reid continued, “that someone is using underhanded means here. I don’t see the Administrator’s office making a full-force effort to find the owner (a relative) to turn the property over. And if an owner pops up after the fact, I doubt they would go out of their way to make sure the money for the sale is given to that person.” Meanwhile, there is a walk-through this this Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29 to see the Carlton Avenue property. The auction takes place May 2nd at 360 Adams Street, Rm 144. Registration is at 11:30 a.m.
