Do Not be Afraid of Tomorrow

e were in the office of Professor Christopher Boxe, to discuss an upcoming event being produced for the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford Stuyvesant by Bernice Green of Project Green Global. I took the opportunity to raise the subject of the amount of plastic pollution in the oceans and effects of climate change projected for 2050. Dr. Boxe, Deputy Chair of Medgar Evers College of Science and Research said, “Yes, but I’m solutions-driven,” and went on to speak about young people with projects confronting that present and coming reality in creative ways, benefitting both the planet and the lives they want to live.

Bedford-Stuyvesant and I, Magnolia Board Chair, were struck by the passion of Dr. Boxe as he took the opportunity to give us a deep look into process and the time necessary to bring science programs specifically designed to develop and widen the horizons of the generation in our schools today.

A colleague in the department, Dr. Dereck Skeete, stopped by and they both emphasized the importance of students being exposed to the value of taking the time to learn the enabling tools for self-development. Knowledge that creates the opportunities for personal achievement, also strengthens the village that raises a child to be propelled forward, attitudinally and technologically equipped, to do psychological and economic battle in the most competitive city in an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing world.

Redlining Blues ■■

edlining is an illegal practice in real estate. It involves lenders that refuse to lend money or extend credit to borrowers in certain areas of a city.

Typically, these areas are home to low-income households and/or the majority of the households are people of color. These communities of color may be low income or households that are financially solvent and well-off with good credit ratings.

Redlining’s genesis is from One Hundred Years of Land Values in Chicago: The Relationship of the Growth of Chicago to the Rise of Its Land Values, 1830-1933. This is the title of Homer Hoyt’s dissertation published in 1934. Hoyt put different human races and places of origin “by order of desirability.”

Anglo-Saxons and Northern Europeans were most desired and were assigned the color green. Next in desirability were the Northern Italians, Czechs, Polish and Lithuanians, assigned blue. Greeks, Russian Jews and Southern Italians were the third tier, assigned yellow; and Negroes and Mexicans made up the fourth tier; i.e., the least desired and were assigned the color red. Homer Hoyt’s

career path landed him in the position of chief economist of the Federal Housing Authority.

Investopedia.org explains that the term “redlining” was coined by sociologist James McKnight in the 1960s based on how lenders “would literally draw red lines on a map around neighborhoods they would not invest in based on demographics.” The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 was established to end the practice of redlining; however, the practice still exists.

One local advocacy and research organization that stays on top of inequalities in education, housing, voting activity and the local economy is Medgar Evers College Center for Law and Social Justice. In 1988, this center published Race and Mortgage Lending in New York City: A Study in Redlining. A search on the World Wide Web will bring up dozens of current books and online publications that cover redlining issues in various US metropolitan regions.

Due to attending the African-American Genealogical Society (AAGS) meeting held in the Macon Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on March 24, 2018, this writer became acquainted with Walis Johnson, creator of The Red Line Archive. Ms. Johnson

reservoir of understanding that they follow in the footsteps of the scholars and business people of Timbuktu in West Africa, and the hundreds of thousands of manuscripts they left from the 12th century, giving evidence to a thriving intellectual state, the Wakanda of its day.

If our young people are to pick up the threads of that legacy, it will be men and women like Drs. Boxe and Skeete and who will be with others leading the way to tomorrow.

A President Furious Donald Trump is as mad as any Mafiosi would be if his consiglieri’s office was raided.

The wheels of justice are inexorably grinding and they have put President Donald J. Trump in a trick bag. In the course of the investigation by the special counsel, other potential crimes have been uncovered and now the distributed postcards that promoted the project at the end of the AAGS meeting.

The Red Line Archive is a website and a mobile display of her family’s ephemera— photographs, bric-a-brac, a redlined map of Brooklyn and items she collected on her walks through Brooklyn. Ms. Johnson was motivated to construct the mobile display after she received a note from a stranger who wanted to buy her family’s residence. This note was sent shortly after her mother had died, October 24, 2013. This was a situation of “not allowing the body to get cold.”

Her explanation for launching the project is: “The thing that got me hooked was the issue of generational wealth and how, because of redlining, Black people have been deprived of property ownership across generations. When I started to think about my family history of property ownership I knew I had landed on a great story that needed to be told. I wanted to tell it in a way that was personal and politically engaging. Socially engaged art leaves an opening so that people are activated to understand their own experience and imagine a different future.”

The public art mobile display began as an MFA thesis project in the spring of 2016. Johnson started by taking the Red Line Archive out to public spaces in

The Road to Wakanda: Census 2020

n the last few weeks we have been inspired by “Black Panther” and visions of a Wakanda. We have been elevated by the oratory and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King. And Google celebrated Maya Angelou with a recording of “Still I Rise.”

Let’s not fool ourselves. An empowered community will remain a fantasy, Dr. King’s speech will always be a dream, and we will never rise if communities are inaccurately counted. Empowering our community will take more than fantasy, oratory and poetry.

Action is required. Making sure everyone is counted in the census is a critical step in that direction.

Does your community need more affordable housing units? Maybe you need more garbage collectors or more day care centers. Are there enough senior housing units in your community to accommodate the residents who live there? Perhaps you are considering opening a business and want to target a specific group. How many of them live in the community? What are their ages, ethnic group, education level? What percentage are gainfully employed?

An accurate census helps answer the above questions and more so that businesses and government can make informed decisions. “An accurate census helps provide funding for schools, health care, libraries and services in your community,” proclaims a brochure entitled “CountNYC,” provided

by NYC Planning. In addition to English, it is written in 10 additional languages. The alarm has sounded. It is critical everyone is counted in Census 2020.

If the census numbers come in lower than what is actual, so will many other numbers like the electoral college votes. John Flateau, Medgar Evers College, reminds OTP readers that Clinton lost the election because she had fewer electoral college votes (https:// goo.gl/5pk36H).

The census will determine how many electoral votes are assigned to each state.

Right now, New York State is assigned 29 electoral votes and Florida is also assigned 29. Don’t forget President Trump won Florida and Clinton won New York. Do we want to run the risk of having fewer than 29 votes because our people have been undercounted?

President Trump plans to add a question

to the census: “Is this person a citizen of the United States? Yes or No?” Even though the Census Bureau is forbidden from sharing data with the Immigration Department, the question scares the public. Many will not complete the census because of it. Politicians understand that, and New York is leading 17 states in a lawsuit against Trump to get the question removed even though the actual counting doesn’t begin until 2019.

What you need to know about Census 2020: 1. MAKE SURE YOU AND EVERY MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY IS COUNTED IN THE 2020 CENSUS 2. THE CENSUS IS TAKEN EVERY 10 YEARS. (Do we want to wait until 2030 to get it right?)

3. ENUMERATORS ARE NEEDED (High School diploma and citizenship are the requirement. GOOGLE FOR DETAILS.) 4. ANSWER THE DOOR WHEN ENUMERATORS/CENSUS TAKERS COME CALLING. Government with, by and for the people only works when all the people are counted.

VOL. 22 NO. 15 career investigators of the Southern District of New York have reviewed the evidence that Trump and his lawyer Michael Cohen were involved in a criminal act and no client privilege applies and Trump is naked before the law. This accountability is driving him crazy. He has not yet grasped that because he appoints people to a government position that they are not to be loyal to him but rather to the country.

Trump’s learning that now and he knows where this train is headed, and he knows he’s strapped to the front. If the special counsel continues his investigation, Trump knows what he’s done and is certain he’d be impeached by the House and judged guilty by the Senate. If he fires the special counsel, he probably will be impeached and maybe not found guilty by the Senate. Those are bad options between the rock of Robert Mueller and the hard place of the Constitution, but Trump has put himself there. We can only pray that there is a level of sanity in the chain of command as this emotionally-driven man contemplates using the tools of war.

Bedford-Stuyvesant and ClintonHill/Fort Greene. Later, Johnson did a project in Crown Heights and Weeksville. Johnson chose a mobile display after finding and studying the Brooklyn 1938 Red Line Map during one of her walks. She believed that including group walks would compliment her stationary talks. The mobile display is set up also indoors. For example, it was shown in a gallery at Wagner College in Staten Island.

The Red Line Archive has had Johnson log in many miles and stay in shape. I followed the map and walked through Greenpoint, Williamsburg, BedfordStuyvesant, East New York, Crown Heights, Fort Greene and DUMBO. As I walked, I collected soil samples, photos and other ephemera to see where traces of redlining are still visible in the landscape today.

Dead Woman’s $2.5M Brownstone Sold for $50,000 ■■

A

beautiful brownstone in Prospect Heights, valued at over $2 million, was scheduled for sale at auction yesterday. But it was removed from the list, reported as having been sold on January 31st for $50,000. Before that, it was sold for $10,000. Neither sale was by either of the owners. The body of the woman who lived there was found in the vestibule a month after she died. Her mother’s body had been found in the same location 10 years before.

Where’s a good private investigator when you need one? Anybody seen John Shaft?

The 1901 brownstone (which is actually white) at 591 Carlton Avenue, was last inhabited by Paula Sanford, who lived there since she was a child with her adoptive parent, Clarice Gray. Sanford passed away in February of 2017, 10 years after her mother. People would see her occasionally and exchange greetings, but she did not involve herself in any neighborhood activities.

Gray purchased the property in the mid ‘60s and left it to Sanford in her will, but her daughter never transferred the deed into her own name. Sanford had no children, siblings or other known living relatives when she died. This is where the city steps in with a district attorney working along with the public administrator to search for relatives.

Public Administrator Richard Burkheit declined to comment when contacted. D.A. Naida Kalenborn, twice contacted by Our Time Press, first said an attorney would return our call, but the next day she would not comment nor identify whose lawyer it was that refused to return our call.

But Kalenborn was forthcoming with Keith Reid, who, though not with the press,

is endeavoring to get to the bottom of this.

Reid, an attorney and engineer, has lived around the corner from 591 Carlton for 30 years.

“When I called Naida Kalenborn on my findings as it relates to the forgery,” Reid said, “she knew that the record was forged. To me, that was a red flag, because I know when a property is in probate court, it normally sits there for four or five years.

The City just doesn’t run around and start auctioning off a person’s property.”

Another longtime neighbor, Judith B., is concerned as well.

“In January 2018, I ran into a neighbor who said, ‘Oh, the house has been appraised for $2 million and they’re going to have an auction on April 11th.’ I said, ‘We can’t afford that, but we’ll go to the auction to see what happens.’ My son and his wife are looking for a house and would like to have stayed in the neighborhood.

“I think it was in February that I spoke to Keith Reid. He had been looking online and saw the house was sold in January for $50,000. You can’t even rent a hall room in this area for that kind of money! So it never reached auction because this deal was done prematurely. And with the few Blacks who are remaining, that’s the sort of thing that is happening to their properties. And we neighbors were sitting, waiting our turn to bid on the property.”

Documents show property rights to 591 Carlton were sold for $50,000 to 591 Carlton Corp., with the deed and other documents signed by “Yuval Goran, member.”

A Loraine Gray, age 24 of Berbice, Guyana is depicted as having signed the document to sell the property.

Our Time Press contacted Goran for his

side of the story and the call was returned just as we were going to press. We allowed him to have his say, but we will look further into his claims and give interested parties space to counter them, in a follow-up article.

Goran says he came across the property in a routine search, saw no claims had been made against it and began the purchasing process in December of 2017. He says he found birth and death certificates for Clarice Gray and her brother, Dr. Charles Gray, and found that Charles’ daughter Loraine was living in Guyana. When asked why he did not offer Loraine more than $50,000 for a home valued at more than $2M, Goran said that, “We also have other, different business going on with her.” He claimed this business would involve the Carlton property and other projects, and that Loraine wants to build a house in Guyana, and they will be doing that for her.

He also says that while he went through the court system, realtor Steven Stain

initially claimed to have bought the property from Sanford in 2015, producing “fraudulent” documentation in early this year after Goran’s sale entered the public record.

Goran maintains that his is the legitimate case, as he never claimed to have obtained the property from Sanford but through the Gray and Sanford estate.

Goran also says of the Public Administrator’s office, “Only after we recorded our documents did they decide to change their version, ‘Well, there’s another adopted daughter, etc.’ We were in court in February and nobody came with documentation”. Goran is due in court next week to face the Public Administrator.

Yuval Goran is listed as the owner of Bapaz Adaret Properties Corp. Newspaper reports say that in 2010, a blind and wheelchair-bound Evelyn Popalardo, 82, filed suit against her son Andrew for selling her ➔➔ Continued on page 5

WGO AWOL FOR 3 WEEKS I know that I disappeared without a trace.

No column, no explanation for three weeks!

On March 16, I visited Mt. Sinai Hospital’s emergency room after a nagging eating disorder. I could not eat, could not sleep. Had this feeling of malaise which would not recede, even after a visit to one of those city MD outlets and a prescription which offered minimal relief. My internist, an erstwhile competent gastroenterologist, was the last person that I wanted to see. Mt. Sinai admitted me and then I lost my bearings. Doctors had me under observation for 4 days, wanting to avoid surgery but my body was saying otherwise. I had a gastroenterology problem and couldn’t give the doctors what was needed to avoid surgery. I went under on March 19 and have been recovering since. My post-surgery dreams were the stuff that movies are made of. Cannot believe that street drugs compare with the hallucinatory power of that stuff that doctors use as anesthesia.

Concurrent with my gastro problems, my oxygen supply was low and I was diagnosed with asthma and emphysema, probably related to my smoking habit, which I abandoned in 1980. I was unable to eat solid food for almost two weeks following surgery. I was at the mercy of the Mt. Sinai nutrition staff and its man-made intravenous goodies in accordance with my doctors’ orders. Again, my post-surgical body was not responding to the doctors’ intended outcomes with dispatch. If you thought that I was wizened before hospitalization, wait until you see me now. Finally gave the doctors what they needed after I had a tube inserted through my nose to my stomach. Discharged from the hospital to a nursing home for rehab where I am writing WHAT’S GOING ON typed on a laptop, a first for me…. Sent to a nursing home because I live alone!!!

The March issue was supposed to highlight stories about remarkable women. I will play catch-up in forthcoming weeks.

2018 MIDTERMS Hardly a day goes by without myriad references to the role that American women

will play in the 2018 elections from city councils to statehouses, to the US Congress and the Senate. If anything was learned last year from special elections, it is that the distaff vote matters, especially the distaff African-American voter.

Wonders never cease. Last week, the NYS Democrats, the group led by Andrea Stewart -Cousins and the rogue group of 8 Democratic Senators led by Jeff Klein who voted with the GOP for seven years, decided to put aside the animus and literally and figuratively kissed and made up. They work in concert with Stewart-Cousins as head of the Democratic Conference and Klein as her deputy. Politics is the art of the impossible.

Will wait and see how this détente unfolds.

Governor Cuomo, who is running for reelection, also has his fingers on the pulse of the Black female voter.

New York Transit Authority plans closures and upgrades of three stations at 72nd, 86th and 110th Streets on the B/C line.

Closures were scheduled without consultation or dialogue with affected communities like passengers and community boards. No alternative transportation has been articulated. These upgrades begin soon as early as April 9 and will continue for 6 months.

Senator Brian Benjamin, Councilman Mark Levine, Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell, transit advocates and disability advocates are working towards solutions for the Upper West Side straphangers. Senator Benjamin will announce legislation to ensure that New Yorkers are not blindsided by station closings in the future. The Transit move was not a good one during 2018. There will be consequences at the polls.

All 1,400 apartments in the complex—home to nearly 4,000 residents—are being renovated with brand-new kitchens and bathrooms. The roofs, heating systems, elevators and windows at each of the 24 buildings are being fully replaced and new resiliency measures, including rooftop solar arrays and a flood wall, are under construction.

The NextGen NYCHA plan set a goal of transforming 15,000 apartments through RAD over ten years as part of multipronged strategies to improve public housing.

The de Blasio Administration has made an unprecedented commitment to preserve and strengthen public housing. This investment is part of the administration’s total commitment to $2.1 billion to support NYCHA’s capital infrastructure from Fiscal Year 2014 to Fiscal Year 2027 and $1.6 billion to support NYCHA’s operations from Fiscal Year 2014 to Fiscal Year 2022. This investment includes $1.3 billion to fix over 900 roofs, over $500 million to repair deteriorating exterior brickwork at nearly 400 buildings and $140 million to improve security at 15 NYCHA developments. The city waived NYCHA’s annual PILOT and NYPD payments to the city, relieving NYCHA of nearly $100 million in operating expenses a year. In January 2018, the mayor announced $13 million to improve NYCHA’s response to heating emergencies this winter, followed by an additional $200 million for long-term heating improvements at 20 NYCHA developments.

Why They Kill Us Last Wednesday, Saheed Vassell was gunned down in Crown Heights. He was killed by police officers who were responding to calls about a man brandishing a gun. Video from the surrounding businesses show that Mr. Vassell was running up on people and pointing a metal pipe at them, acting as if the metal pipe was a gun. Reports say that when cops arrived, he was pointing this metal pipe like it was a weapon, and so the cops fired ten rounds, hitting him five times and killing him.

Police officers are trained in tactical engagement. They are trained on how to spot a threat, how to assess a dangerous situation, how to take defensive cover and how to remove the threat. They handle guns as part of their career. They shoot them, they carry them, they confiscate them from criminals.

Every cop in every city is trained in tactical engagement, and every cop in every city handles guns enough to be able to recognize one when they see it. Yet, far too often, Blacks are killed because police thought they had a gun. They thought Amadou Diallo’s wallet was a gun. They thought Stephon Clark’s cell phone was a gun. They thought that Saheed Vassell’s metal pipe was a gun. And in each case, rather than to rely on tactical engagement, rather than to take defensive cover and assess a potentially dangerous situation, the cops involved simply aimed and fired. Amadou was shot at 41 times.

Stephon was shot at 20 times. Saheed was shot at 10 times. How do you fire 10 shots at a man who hasn’t fired one shot back at you? How do you decide to kill a person without being totally sure that what you see in his hands is a gun, and not some metal pipe? Who gave you the authority to rule over life in such a way? They didn’t have to kill him you know. Instead of hopping out their vehicle and firing, they could’ve taken cover behind the vehicle and demanded that he

And even if they felt they had to shoot, they could’ve fired one shot at him and waited for his response to being shot once. They didn’t have to all fire in unison. They did not have to kill him. But they did.

Police kill Black men at such a high rate because the value they hold on the life of a Black man is minimal. Media teaches that Black men are shiftless, oversexed and criminalized. Our own music reinforces that opinion, and the racist nature of the white supremacist construct that America was built on profits from the idea of Black male subordinance. The seeds of inequality have been planted in us all. White folk, Asian folk, Hispanic folk, Black folk, we all deal with battling the imagery and messages on race that permeate throughout our lives. When a cop sees a white man in a criminalized situation, he sees someone whose life has value, and he will treat him as such. He’s more likely to ask him to put the weapon down. He’s more likely to realize that the guy is carrying a can of Red Bull and not a gun. When a cop sees a Black man in a

criminalized situation, he sees a criminal, someone who is a threat. He doesn’t offer the benefit of the doubt because he doesn’t recognize the value in doing so. If he has something in his hand, it must be a gun. If they have to engage, it will be with deadly force. Tactical engagement holds no value when dealing with Black men because we are already guilty in the court of public opinion.

The issue of cops and how they engage Blacks is a systemic issue. The path to solving the problem is as complex as the problem itself. However, a step in the right direction is to mandate racial sensitivity courses for all police officers. Police have to be educated and forced to be accountable for their views on race. There should be a constant psychological evaluation and profile of police officers so that those officers that exhibit racially polarizing ideals can be taken off of duties that might put them in situations where they might be compelled to draw their weapon. We are talking about life.

This is a very serious thing. No one deserves to be killed by police unless the danger they present is of imminent death or destruction.

Saheed Vassell certainly did not deserve to die.

Keith Reid would be interested to know this. “I think it was around Feb. of 2018 that the deed to 591 Carlton was forged on two separate occasions,” he said. “Whoever was involved in trying to find Paula Sanford’s family, they would have access to her records and realize that they were really no next of kin that was paying attention. The fact that the mother, Clarice Gray’s name was still on the deed, they had to fix that

portion of it. That’s when they claimed they had discovered someone in a foreign country. So, for $50,000, they are trying to acquire a property that is valued at 2.5 to 2.7 million dollars. (Goran thinks the property is worth $1.5 million because it is a “shell building” that hasn’t been maintained for years.)

A bizarre twist is Paula Sanford being charged with first-degree manslaughter in the death of her 87-year-old mother in September, 2003. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Sanford initially said she returned home to find her mother dead at the bottom of the stairs, but when interviewed again, she claimed she and her mother had argued and that Gray put her hand in Sanford’s face. The daughter says she grabbed Gray’s hand, but her mother

pulled back and went tumbling backwards down the stairs. She said she called out to see if she was okay, and her mother said she was, and to, ’Just leave me alone!’

Sanford says she did just that. She left the home for five hours, returning to find her mother dead. That Sanford, a geriatric nurse, would walk past her mother to leave her lying alone, was a key argument for conviction. But the defense countered that New York State has no law that says a person – even a relative – must come to the aid of someone in distress. Sanford was said to have committed no crime and the charges were dismissed. It is odd indeed that the daughter would meet her own end inches away from where her mother died.

“I hadn’t seen Paula for a couple of weeks,” said Judith B. “And when I came

home I saw police cars in front of her house and the morgue wagon came. Another neighbor said they found her dead between the two doors; apparently either she died when she entered or before she could leave, but she was between the two outer doors.”

Miss Gray’s family should be able to work through the City of New York and make sure that the family is well-compensated for the hard work that their relatives have done in this country. I’m an advocate, as far as making sure that dark- and brownskinned people are not being continually abused and being cheated out of what we have legally earned.”

Ms. Carthan, a gutsy Bedford Stuyvesant resident with an appreciation for nature, saved a rare magnolia grandiflora from bulldozers in the 1960’s, set up the first ecology center of its kind in the United States, commandeered 100 Block Associations to plant 1500 trees in her neighborhood, called on Mayor Lindsay to come to her barbecue (and he did) and pushed an urban green movement --from her Vernon Avenue perch --that’s replicated in different forms today.

Now, more than 3 decades after her death, Ms. Carthan’s amazing legacy is standing taller than the 50-ft. magnolia tree she rescued, thanks to Wakanda moves by Rodney Hughes, a professional perfumer and Bed-Stuy resident and chemistry professor Dr. Christopher Boxe of Medgar Evers College, CUNY. Hughes extracted the essence of from the flower petals of the Hattie’s rare Magnolia, born in 1885, to create a natural fragrance that eventually will be sold to help raise monies for the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Dr. Boxe, a noted chemistry professor, and now deputy chair of Medgar Evers College Chemistry and Environmental Science Department, working on strategies to engage young people, K - 12, in

the formal sciences. The chemists -- the community-based and the academic -- are discussing ways to make this work.

They each are participating in the Center’s Earth Month 25 schools will receive Star Magnolia trees in time for the Department of Education’s April 20 Earth Day observance.

The Earth events, developed by Project Green Global for the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford Stuyvesant, will end in April at a Carnival/Block Party at PS. 21 scheduled for Saturday, the 28th.

Celebrations pick up in May when some schools will dedicate their legacy magnolias to community heroes and heroines.

ARROW, La.]---“They tried to bury us, but did not know we were seeds.” In unmarked graves along the Mississippi River, slaves from the Monroe and Bruslie Plantations were scattered about the grounds full of untold stories of strength, endurance and hope.

Beneath the sugarcane fields and shade trees, they lay there waiting to be showered by the love of their descendants searching for them through time. Listening to the call in their hearts and spirits to make the pilgrimage into the forgotten history of America and discover their tangible past.

Kathe Hambrick, founder of the River Road African Burial Grounds Coalition, heeded that call and the fruition of her efforts gathered descendants of slaves and slave masters alike to Tezcuco Plantation, not far from the burial grounds.

My God Here we were, on the lawn of the “Big House,” celebrating the lives of those slaves cast aside by the indifference of the institution of slavery. Where our ancestors may not have been able to say the prayers, prepare their bodies or show any emotion for their loss at all! The sentiment in that space danced from heart to heart, so new and vibrant! Like meeting a long-lost family member for the first time. There are so many stories to share, so many songs to sing and so much dancing to be done! Some attendees visited the burial site at dawn, following traditions and giving sacrifices to pay homage and prepare the spirits for the celebration to come. Maybe the Black people from long ago had to celebrate the life of the deceased in this manner, under the cover of darkness to protect their own lives. But when the light came, the drums announced the beginning of the ceremony so that we could all get in rhythm with one another to lift this praise to our ancestors.

We no longer had to suffer in secret! Negro Spirituals were sung in the way that has always brought us through our tough times.

Libations were poured and the elders lifted their voices as we sat in awe of their history.

We brought our children to be a part of the story so that they could run into the future and carry word that the ancestors actually existed! And in these hallowed grounds, they lay smiling, knowing that their efforts gave birth to the possibility of a better future.

We mourned their suffering and sacrifice for us, understanding what they had to endure to give us this chance to honor them.

The very wind and humidity graced us just as it had the slaves from the plantations, and we made peace with the words we would never hear, the embraces we could never feel, from the names we may never know.

Those things no longer mattered. Mrs. Hambrick and her team had given us the reality of our past. Folk tales and fireside stories became real history, and as we visited the Monroe Burial Site, looking out over the sugarcane, I could see those Black faces toiling under the sun. Being there, in their space, was surreal. My strength was revived knowing that my people had already endured the worst, and their blood

that courses through my veins is prepared for the fight forward.

Bridging this gap in history is so important for the healing of the Black community.

Plantations can no longer be viewed as these monuments to the “Gallant South.” “A plantation was the scene of a crime against humanity, and there is nothing fine about owning people,” said Ingrid Palmquist, a descendant of the owners of Tezcuco Plantation and member of the River Road African Burial Grounds Coalition.

Historic discoveries such as this are groundbreaking in the work of preserving a history meant to be forgotten. We do not mean to destroy what is known, but we have a right to our own past. And if the heavy weight of slavery continues to hang around the neck of America, unattended, we will all be choked to death under its weight. We must all breathe in the truth of our history so that the stagnant stench of racism can be cleared from the air and our ancestors can finally find peace in their rest.

National Memorial to Honor Lynching Victims Opens April 26

“We wanted people to have a sense of just the scale of what this violence, what this terrorism was,” Bryan Stevenson told Oprah Winfrey.

T

here was a time in the U.S. when white people would gather in public squares in the Deep South to witness Black men, women or children hanged, burned or amputated, sometimes all of the above. This form of domestic terrorism is a painful part of American history that Bryan Stevenson said needs to be remembered in order to heal the racial divide in this country.

“We can achieve more in America when we commit to truth-telling about our past,” he said in a statement.

Stevenson, a criminal defense attorney who played a role in successfully overturning the wrongful convictions of more than 100 people on death row, is founder and director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI).

EJI spearheaded the creation of the National Memorial to Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Ala. It is the nation’s first

comprehensive memorial dedicated to the more than 4,000 racial terror lynchings of Blacks in a 70-year period following the Civil War, when Black people were supposed to get the right to vote.

“Lynching was especially effective because it would allow the whole community to know that we did this to this person,” Stevenson told Oprah Winfrey in an interview that aired Sunday on “60 Minutes.”

“It was intended to send a message that if you try to vote … if you do anything that complicates white supremacy and white dominance of political power, we will kill you.”

Racial terror lynchings are defined as “acts of violence that were done with complete impunity, where there was no risk of prosecution.” Lynching was not only committed in the middle of the night by members of the Ku Klux Klan, but was also done publicly. They were witnessed and celebrated by thousands of people.

In the “60 Minutes” segment, Winfrey read from a newspaper about the lynching of a Black teenager named Jesse Washington in Waco, Texas.

“The news article headline read, ‘Burn Young Negro in Public Square as 15,000 Look On,’” Winfrey said.

The National Memorial to Peace and Justice was paid for through hundreds of private donations. The memorial structure on the center of the site is constructed of over 800 steel monuments that hang from the ceiling, one for each county in the U.S. where a racial terror lynching took place. The names of the lynching victims are engraved on the columns.

“We wanted people to have a sense of just the scale of what this violence, what this terrorism was,” Stevenson told Winfrey.

During the most active years of lynching, the population of Blacks in the country was an estimated 7 million. Lynching reached its peak in 1892. When configured for today’s population, the 4,000 victims calculated by the EJI translates to about 24,000 lives lost — about eight times the number of people who died on 9/11.

In 2015, EJI, a nonprofit group based in Alabama that fights against racial inequality in the legal system, released the report “Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror.” The report focused on the 12 most active lynching states in the country: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

The National Memorial to Peace and Justice is modeled after important projects in other countries used to overcome difficult histories of genocide, apartheid and horrific human rights abuses. The EJI said it was “designed to promote a more hopeful commitment to racial equality and just treatment of all people.”

A short walk from the memorial and built on the site of a former slave warehouse, the EJI also created The Legacy Museum, which includes interactive media, sculpture and videography. It immerses visitors in the sights and sounds of the domestic slave trade, racial terrorism, the Jim Crow South and the world’s largest prison system.

The April 26 opening of the memorial will be accompanied by several days of educational panels and presentations from leading national figures, including civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.).

A Concert for Peace and Justice is scheduled for April 27 and will feature the Roots; Common, Academy Award-winner for “Glory” and “Selma;” Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes; Usher and Kirk Franklin, among others.

“I’m hopeful that sites like the ones we are building and conversations like the ones we’re organizing will empower and inspire people to have the courage to create a more just and healthy future,” Stevenson said.

I’ve really absolved Black people from blame for our condition in this country and around the world. It’s not our fault. I don’t mean that we can’t change or take control of our communities, but the first thing that we need to do is to understand and accept

on a profound level what has happened and who we have become as a result before we can begin to change things. It is more than a struggle for maintaining cultural identity. The effects of redlining remain acute until we forgive ourselves.

We didn’t cause it. We can’t cure or control it.

s the NBA regular season comes to an end, it has been yet another difficult season for the New York Knicks. The team will miss the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. It is more than certain that the team will not retain current Head Coach Jeff Hornacek for the final year of his contract. There have been many rumblings and rumors about a coaching change.

(Yes, I know Knick fans) I have just the right guy for the job. Look no further than former NBA player and coach Mark Jackson. Jackson has not coached in a few years; however, it is a fair debate that Jackson is the man who has created the championship culture in Oakland we know today as the Golden State Warriors.
