Remembering Winnie Mandela ■■ By Rev. Dr. Herbert Daughtry

W

hen I first heard the news that Winnie Mandela made her transition (April 2, 2018), sadness flooded my heart and tears welled up in my eyes, but the image that played across my mind was the beautiful, childlike, winsome, smiling face. She always greeted me with that inimitable smile that was reserved only for the people she cared about. I knew behind that smile was the fearless lioness ready to protect her cubs and territory or, ready to spring forward, clawing or biting by “any means necessary” to take what belonged to her and her loved ones. In the 1980s, my family and I hosted her daughter, Zenani Mandela, at our home.

I remember when Winnie, her husband, President Nelson Mandela, and the African National Congress (ANC) came to New York for the first time. I was on the Welcoming Committee along with my wife, Dr. Karen S. Daughtry, and Mrs. Julie Belafonte, who were the co-chairs of the Women’s Committee. We greeted Mandela's entourage at the John F. Kennedy Airport. The long line of cars and buses made their first stop at the Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, NY. Assemblymen

(At this point, I felt bound to remember Les Payne, the noted journalist who recently made his transition on March 19, 2018, was also there. He was also at the airport. While waiting for the Mandelas, we spent considerable time discussing a number of issues. The main topics were the Mandelas and South Africa.)

Winnie’s first public speech was made at my church, The House of the Lord Church in Brooklyn.

There was an intense struggle in the Welcoming Committee as to where the Mandelas would visit.

My wife and Julie suggested they wanted Winnie at our church, honoring our long struggle to free South Africa and free Mandela.

There was no resistance. There was one caveat – there were those who didn’t want Winnie to speak because it could not be absolutely predetermined what Winnie would say, especially our church being known for its militancy and heated rhetoric. “We’re fired up and we won’t take no more” was known to be our slogan. There was no way in the world that we would invite Winnie to our church and tell her that she couldn’t speak.

True to who she was, Winnie spoke with all of the love of her people, passion for freedom and anger at the apartheid system.

Her words came pouring from her

mouth like fiery darts. She said, “If the negotiations fail (Nelson and the ANC were in negotiations with the government on the transfer of power), I am going back to the bush and intensify the struggle.”

We all knew what she meant.

We were on our feet, clapping, stomping, screaming and yelling, “Winnie! Winnie! Winnie!

Keep the pressure on! Keep the pressure on!” I was sitting with Harry Belafonte in the back of the church. We were caught up in the emotion that seemingly shook the church to its foundation.

Winnie’s courage and boldness in facing formidable enemies inspired my wife to start an organization named “Sisters Against South African Apartheid (SASAA).” They contributed substantially to the freedom of South Africa and Mandela.

The last time I saw Winnie was at Nelson Mandela’s funeral at his ancestral home in Qunu, South Africa. There were 4,000 people at the funeral in a huge tent. You can imagine my feelings when my name was called unexpectedly during the funeral by Nelson Mandela’s grandson as one of the veterans of the “Free South Africa/ Free Mandela” movement!

When the funeral was over, we marched a slight incline of about 50 yards to the actual burial site.

Only 400 were invited to the interment. I was profoundly honored

Only 17 ministers participated.

Rev. Jesse Jackson and I were the only ministers outside of South Africa. I was pleased to bring along my grandson, Min. Lorenzo Daughtry Chambers.

When I looked at Winnie, her shoulders were bent with the heavy burden of grief, but when our eyes met, she somehow summoned the strength to smile.

I shall remember her always as a tough, courageous, audacious and no-nonsense sister who personified the love and courage of freedom fighters through the ages; and who, through the years, while her husband was imprisoned, became

member of the Parliament, the nation’s governing body. This was a significant victory after devoting her life to the reestablishment of a nation governed by the indigenous people of the land. Winnie was also able to witness a major victory before her death. Early last month, Parliament passed, by a 241 to 83 majority, a law allowing the government to seize — without compensation — land owned by white farmers.

Egregious disparities in landownership had persisted more than two decades after the African National Congress assumed rule.

Winnie had persistently pressed for this reform to deliver some measure of justice to a people brutalized and disenfranchised under the apartheid regime. One of nine children, the future “Mother of the Nation” was born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela in the rural area of Transkei in 1936. (Nomzamo means, “She, who will go through trials” in the Xhosa language.) After moving to Johannesburg as a young adult, she became the nation’s first Black female social worker. Nelson and Winnie were introduced by his friend Oliver Tambo; she was a friend of Tambo’s wife Adelaide.

Winnie said that even in those early days of dating, Mandela was consumed with his calling. He had opened, along with Tambo, the first Black law firm in South Africa, and was quickly rising as a leader in the antiapartheid movement. “I had so little time to love him,” she said.

Married to the world’s most famous political prisoner, Winnie Mandela kept the faith and the fight over the 27 years of his imprisonment, organizing for the retaking of ownership of the land from white settlers. During that time she raised the couple’s two daughters, Zenani and Zindzi, while organizing relentlessly as well, for the protection of people involved in the resistance. And citizens, including many young people and children, were being murdered in the streets, on the road, and in their homes by the government’s merciless armed forces.

Her activism on behalf of the people and her advocacy for justice for her husband kept Winnie the target of a suppression campaign.

Regularly detained and tortured by the government, she was, in one incidence, released from prison in October 1970, after having spent 491 days in solitary confinement. In 1977, she was sentenced to live in banishment for more than 10 years in a home that initially had no floor or ceiling, no running water or electricity and that was surrounded by steel mesh and barbed wire. She lived alone, as Zenani had married and moved away and Zinzi was sent away to school when Winnie saw depression infecting the young woman’s spirit as a result of the banishment. Yet Winne managed to make a few friends in the little town of Brandfort. She educated ➔➔ Continued on page 14

the face of the “Free South Africa/ Free Mandela” Movement. Yes, it’s a sad time, made even more so by the remembrance of tomorrow when we relive the 50thAnniversary of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There is hope – a hope of life beyond the grave! This hope is brought home to us by the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the hope for a better world for which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President Nelson Mandela and Mrs. Winnie Mandela gave their lives.

I will live through this sadness.

I will always be hopeful and see her beautiful smiling face.

Martin Luther King Jr.: 50 Years Later

Activists today are taking up Dr. King’s mantle and reviving the Poor People’s Campaign.

F

ifty years ago, on April 4, 1968, a bullet robbed us of one of the great human-rights leaders of the 20th century. The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee, accelerated the racist backlash of the late 1960s. Along with the murder of Robert F. Kennedy two months later, this tragic trajectory led to the election of Richard M. Nixon, who escalated the Vietnam War and unleashed police and FBI forces against movements for change.

However, the bonds of memory cannot be so easily dissolved. Ending poverty and fighting for union rights are back on the economic-justice agenda today. Fifty years after King, Memphis remains an appropriate launch pad for these campaigns.

“Fight for $15” organizers met there, picketing McDonald’s and marching on the anniversary of the Memphis sanitation workers’ strike. The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), which will be meeting in Memphis on the 50th anniversary of King’s death, launched its “I Am 2018” campaign to fight for racial and economic justice and combat so-called right-to-work laws.

The Rev. William Barber, the Rev. Liz Theoharis, and others also met in Memphis to begin their new Poor People’s Campaign to end poverty, which is modeled on King’s original crusade.

Yet even as Memphis’s now-multiracial political leadership celebrates the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement in the city, the challenges remain daunting.

A majority-black city of more than 600,000 people, Memphis has among the highest rates of poverty and infant mortality of any US city its size. Although higher wages for working-class people would clearly benefit both a consumer-based economy and the city’s tax base, the traditional low-wage, anti-union business model is back in style in Republican-run Tennessee. Nationally, private-sector unions—which now represent less than 10 percent of the American workforce—are under attack, as are their public-sector counterparts.

In our own time of escalating crisis, why return to the story of Memphis and Martin Luther King? Activists and historians tell us why: Understanding the critical year of 1968 and King’s agenda for social change can help us clarify the organizing imperatives of today. In Memphis and elsewhere, the bonds of memory 50 years since King are helping people to remember, and to fight.

When King came to Memphis on March 18, 1968, as part of his Poor People’s Campaign, it appeared that the economic-justice movement he’d struggled to build was firmly on track. Some 1,300 black workers in the AFSCME Local 1733 had gone on strike on February 12, after enduring years of abuse and the needless deaths of two members, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, due to faulty equipment on February 1. Police attacks on workers and their allies during a march on February 23 had angered the black community and brought together the working poor, church leaders, unions, students, and teachers. King was ready for this fight: He had long worked with the left-leaning side of organized labor to build a labor/civil-rights alliance.

In Memphis, King called for a second phase of the freedom movement that would go beyond its first phase—the struggle for civil and voting rights—and begin a fight

for “economic equality.” Phase two would demand that the nation shift its priorities away from war and military spending and toward housing, health care, education, decent unionized jobs, economic opportunity, and a sustainable income for all. He also proposed a new tactic: During his riveting speech, King called for a “general work stoppage in the city of Memphis.”

Memphis provided an alliance of the middle class and the working poor that could stop the city’s anti-union campaign and help fuel King’s national movement to end poverty. It brought together direct action in the streets and in the workplace in order to create a new and powerful direction for the movements of the 1960s: a general strike for freedom and economic justice.

On March 19, King left Memphis for the Mississippi Delta. Here, he confronted the desperate poverty of the unemployed poor.

During a visit to Marks, Mississippi, a town of less than 2,500, King told an interviewer, “I found myself weeping before I knew it.

I met boys and girls by the hundreds who didn’t have any shoes to wear, who didn’t have any food to eat in terms of three square meals a day, and I met their parents, many of whom don’t even have jobs.” In Marks, he found poor people cast off from the cotton economy by the mechanization of cultivation and harvesting. They lived in shacks without plumbing, lighting, or ventilation through extreme heat and humidity, many subsisting on foraged berries, fish, and wild rabbits. Yet King also found here a core of poor people who would go to DC to energize his campaign and later help to elect scores of black leaders in the Delta.

King once recalled a conversation he’d had on a plane with a white man who told him that black people needed to lift themselves by their own bootstraps and advance through individual initiative. “It is a cruel jest,” King replied, “to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps.” Few black people received the kind of government support—the New Deal’s low-interest home loans, the homesteads and land-grant colleges and subsidies, the federal land acquisitions and military protection for railroad and oil magnates in the West—that had boosted some immigrants into the ranks of the middle and upper classes.

Then too, Africans didn’t come to America looking for prosperity, as Ben Carson, the black Republican who heads up the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Trump, ludicrously suggested recently. Rather, they were ripped from their freedom in Africa to work as slaves in America. “My grandfather and my great-grandfather” helped build the wealth of this nation as slaves and sharecroppers, King said, but ended up in poverty.

In contrast to the stereotypical “self-made man,” King spoke of a man unjustly kept in prison for years: “And you just go up to him and say, ‘Now you are free,’ but you don’t give him any bus fare to get to town.

You don’t give him any money to get some clothes to put on his back or get on his feet again in life. Every court of jurisprudence would rise up against this. And yet, this is the very thing that our nation did to the black man.”

Remarkably, given the brutality that people had faced in the civil-rights struggle, King warned that the second phase of the freedom movement would be even harder.

“It is much easier to integrate a lunch counter than it is to guarantee an annual

income,” he said, and the resistance from capitalist elites as well as Southern sheriffs would be much worse. Yet King insisted that the country needed a moral revolution that would “raise certain basic questions about the whole society.” Like Malcolm X, he saw the agenda for organizing as global and revolutionary.

King had spoken out sharply against the Vietnam War and wasteful military spending but went even further, criticizing capitalism itself. He told his congregation at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church that a system that put the wealth of a few ahead of a decent life for the many needed fundamental transformation. He envisioned the Poor People’s Campaign as a way to gather the sick, the hungry, and the destitute in a shantytown in the nation’s capital to “demand that the government address itself to the problem of poverty.”

In the 50 years since King’s death, the media and most historians have cast the Poor People’s Campaign as a failure, and Memphis has come to be remembered primarily as the site of his tragic assassination.

Instead, as the people taking up the struggles

to end poverty and create a living wage today point out, we should embrace King’s final effort as a necessary turn that we can emulate. In the Poor People’s Campaign, dispossessed people learned skills and crossed cultural boundaries, beginning a fight for economic justice that many continued for the rest of their lives.

In the Memphis strike, black workers declaring “I Am a Man” paved the way for AFSCME’s successful national campaign to unionize thousands of public employees, including many African Americans and women. The percentage of public employees who are unionized is now five times the percentage of private-sector employees. Unions look back on King as a labor hero as well as a prophetic advocate for the disinherited and the working poor. AFSCME’s “I Am 2018” campaign seeks to rekindle the memory of what happened 50 years ago and spark a nationwide movement to organize workers and poor people in the fight for racial and economic justice.

know. The term fake news reminds you of Trump, right? But the term itself is a necessary one in today’s media environment. Every day, millions of Americans wake up and check social media. Our timelines are filled with all kinds of information - status updates, pictures, and links to “news” stories. While some of those links are actual verified news stories, many of them are not. They could be blog posts, they could be posts from satire sites like onion.com, or even worse, they could be outright fake news. And if you don’t believe that we are all subject to ingesting fake news, think again. If you utilize social media enough, you too will at some point be fooled, and will react to fake news. The most recent example of many of us being fooled by fake news just occurred last week.

Last week, a blog post on the blogging platform Medium discussed a tuition scandal at Howard University. The blog post alleged that financial aid employees had colluded to steal almost $1 million in financial aid and grant money. The post alleged that six employees had been fired as a result, and it accused Tyrone Hankerson, Jr. of stealing more than $400,000 by himself. Tyrone was the only person to be accused by name in the blog post. The post was written under a pseudonym. Almost immediately, the post went viral, being shared through Facebook

and Twitter. With all the makings of a scandal, readers honed in on the name Tyrone Hankerson, Jr. as the focal point of the story.

People began to search the name in social media, and what they found reinforced the story they read. Tyrone’s Instagram and Facebook were full of pictures of the young man seemingly living in opulence. Birkin bags, fur coats, trips to beautiful places, even a picture of himself in front of a new Range Rover; the young college student appeared to be living a life far beyond the means of most college students. The pictures matched the story. Surely, this kid must be stealing money. No college student can afford a fur coat, right? Tyrone became a pariah, with social media castigating him as a scammer.

The news of the scandal was true. The President of the University came out and explained that he had found (through investigating) that there had been severe mismanagement of funds between 2007 and 2016, and as a result, six employees were fired. Although Tyrone did work in the department from 20112015, he was not one of the employees who were fired due to the scandal. Furthermore, Tyrone still attends Howard. He is currently finishing up his final year towards a degree in law. If Tyrone was really at the center of the scandal, wouldn’t he had been at the very least been kicked out of the school and arrested?

Now portrayed as a scammer and deviant, Tyrone sought to clear his name by sitting down with Roland Martin. According to his

Tyron Hankerson, Jr. lawyer, Tyrone has never been contacted by Howard University regarding the financial mismanagement being investigated. He never even heard his name associated with the investigation until it appeared in the blog post on Medium. He still attends Howard Law, graduated from Howard as an undergrad Summa Cum Laude, and even spoke at commencement. As for the blog post that started this whole thing, it has been taken down. What spread in the news cycle like a breaking story has fizzled out once challenged. That isn’t news. That’s fake news!

Clickbait. Clout-chasing. These are millennial terms that most of us probably have never heard. Clickbait is web content whose main goal is to get the user to click on a link

to go to a specific Web site. Clout-chasing is when a blogger or social media user speaks bad about a person in order to gain popularity for their own blog, Web site or social media page. Either of these new-age concepts can be the impetus for fake news. Tyrone’s lawyer stated that he believes that Tyrone was named in the blog post because of his relationship to the current Howard president, and because his supposed lifestyle as portrayed on social media may have garnered a few enemies. He may be right. Meanwhile, those of us who read the links on our timelines for information need to be more resilient about what we spend time reading. Because that sensational headline could just be clickbait, or someone clout-chasing.

IDC-Republican Coalition Fails to Deliver for Students

Alliance for Quality Education and Candidates Call out IDC Senators

ew York’s students are facing more underfunding in the due to the actions of the IDC-Republican Coalition that runs the State Senate.

As budget negotiations move towards a conclusion the IDC is hiding behind their Republican coalition partners. The Senate Majority passed a budget bill which falls far short of the $1.5 billion school aid increase proposed by the State Assembly.

The Senate Majority Budget also fails to provide any commitment to fully fund the $4.2 billion in Foundation Aid owed as a result of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE). By contrast the Assembly passed a plan that would fully phase-in the $4.2 billion in Foundation Aid owed to schools within four years. The IDC’s partnership with the Republicans is undermining the Assembly position in negotiations and making it extremely difficult to deliver the fund our students need.

The IDC’s oft repeated justification for their Coalition partnership with the Republicans is that they claim by being in the majority they can deliver on progressive priorities. But they failed to deliver for our school children. The IDC’s “no” vote on the budget was largely a symbolic gesture: the content of the Senate majority budget was determined when the IDC chose to put the Republicans in control of the Senate, and when IDC Leader Jeff Klein and Republican Leader John Flanagan went to the negotiation table as a Republican-led team.

AQE and candidates challenging the IDC Senators are calling on the IDC to prove that their promise to deliver is more than empty words by ensuring that the enacted state budget includes the full funding proposed by the State Assembly.

is severely underfunded—and because of our State Senator Jose Peralta, there is no Democratic State Senator at the negotiating table fighting for my kids. If Senator Peralta really cares about the thousands of students in his district, he should step up and demand the $1.5 billion our children are owed is included in the budget,” said Democratic State Senate candidate for NY-13 Jessica Ramos.

“Our schools are severely underfunded and we’ve had enough empty rhetoric. If you’re really a Democrat, then stand up for progressive priorities and fund our schools.”

“The education of our children should be our highest priority because they are the future of our state. We continue to see vast inequality in the resources given to schools, with the state consistently underfunding public schools,” said Democratic State Senate candidate for NY-34 Alessandra Biaggi. “Despite the obvious consequence of depriving our children of programs such as music and the arts, students in underserved communities are robbed of reaching their highest potential for academic achievement. We should be focused on funding public schools, not siphoning money into privately run charter schools.”

Brooklyn Community Board 9's Vote for Next District Manager Stalls

rooklyn Community Board No. 9 (BK CB9) serves the communities of South Crown Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Wingate and portions of North Flatbush. This area is feeling the squeeze from displacement caused by higher-income New Yorkers leaving posh neighborhoods to set up stakes in areas that are cheaper than where they once lived. In the midst of this neighborhood transition, BK CB9 is without a District Manager to manage the day-to-day needs of the residents and the board members. Some residents in that district wonder—some softly and others loudly—When will this community district have another District Manager?

Pearl Miles had been a fixture in the District Manager’s seat until BK CB9 members voted her out of the position on October 28, 2015.

Next, Carmen Martinez, a CB9 board member, claimed the reigns of the community district office for a short time. Martinez enjoyed four months—from June to October of 2016. Rancor developed over the $100,000 annual salary bestowed to her. Other issues that rubbed many the wrong way was the absence of a search committee and the inadequate publicizing of the job vacancy. Given BK CB9 is nine members short of a full community board, Martinez would have better served the

district by chairing/co-chairing a committee or being a vitally important committee member.

Many community district offices may appear to be quaint, independent buildings but they are a part of New York City government and must adhere to New York City rules. This latest effort at securing a competent administrator was officially ushered in when Unella Rhone-Perry became the Search Committee Chairperson. Rhone-Perry managed the dispersal of the job vacancy notice and scheduling interviews. The vacancy notice went out on January 2, 2018. It states, “…seeking an energetic dynamic and dedicated Community Organizer to serve as District Manager…”

The interview period was during the month of February 2018.

While the number of interviews conducted is undisclosed to the public at this time, three candidates had been selected and were to be presented to the public on March 27, 2018, which was the night to vote for the next District Manager: Simone Bennett, BK CB9 Education Committee Chairperson; Fitzroy Searles, BK CB2 Community Associate.

Searles has been employed by BK CB2 since 2014 where he is responsible “for resolving constituent service requests, managing board committees and providing administrative staff.” The third candidate’s name was not available, and the candidate was absent the

night the vote was to take place. At approximately 10:05 PM, Board Chairperson Musa Moore directed the audience to leave Middle School 61’s auditorium so that the 25 attending community board members could have an impromptu executive session regarding the vote for the next District Manager. At approximately 10:45 PM, community residents, elected officials’ representatives and other attendees were requested to return to the auditorium. Mr. Moore informed the body that 1) The three resumes had not been reviewed, 2) A vote had been taken that resulted in increasing the number of job candidates from three persons to six, and 3) The voting was rescheduled to occur during the April general community board meeting on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. On March 28, 2018, this reporter called the BK CB9’s office to request the names of the District Manager candidates who were present at BK CB9’s March 27, 2018 general community board meeting to ensure accuracy of reporting. BK CB9 Community Assistant Khalid Nixon answered the telephone. Mr. Nixon gave the directions to e-mail this inquiry to the e-mail address: bk09@ cb.nyc.gov. Mr. Nixon would then forward the request to BK CB9 Chairman Musa Moore.

This reporter acted on the directions that same afternoon. As of March 30, 2018, response has not been received.

Stephon Clark Was Shot in the Back: Autopsy

Demonstrations continued throughout the weekend; one protester was struck by a police cruiser.

esults from a private autopsy released over the weekend revealed that Stephon Clark was struck with eight bullets, six of which went in his back.

Seven of the bullets struck the backside of Clark’s body, said forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu. According to Omalu, any of those seven bullets could have been fatal.

“Meaning that, out of all the seven, all he needed to have died was just one of the seven,” he said.

Protests have continued in California after the fatal shooting of Clark, 22, by two Sacramento Police Officers. Demonstrations escalated over the weekend after a sheriff’s department vehicle struck one activist and drove off.

Video taken by one witness shows two police cruisers attempting to get through the throng of protesters. The first one makes it past the crowd. The second one strikes 61-year-old Wanda Cleveland and continues driving.

Cleveland suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

“He never even stopped. It was a hit and run. If I did that I’d be charged,” Cleveland reported to the Sacramento Bee from the hospital. “It’s disregard for human life.”

Another protester and witness told the publication that the cruiser “sped off” after striking Cleveland. According to the Bee, Cleveland is active in the community, frequently attending

city council meetings.

Black Lives Matter Sacramento tweeted: Some people have noted differences in the handling of Clark’s shooting compared to other fatal police shootings of Black men, pointing out the transparency and swiftness that have accompanied the investigation. Body cam footage from the incident was released quickly.

And on March 27 Police Chief Daniel Hahn announced that the California Department of Justice will be participating in the investigation.According to a DOJ press release, these investigations are usually handled at the local level by district attorneys. But Hahn requested the DOJ’s involvement.

Hahn is the city’s first Black chief of police.

The department is about three-quarters white, 10.61 percent Hispanic, 7.77 percent Asian, 4.33 percent Black, 1.34 percent Filipino, 1.05 percent Native American, and than one percent other races, according to a 2016 internal report.

The city of Sacramento is 33.6 percent white, 28.1 percent Hispanic, 18.1 percent Asian, 13.2 percent Black, 4.7 percent two or more races, 1.5 percent Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and less than 1 percent American Indian or another race.

Despite the well-intentioned behaviors

now, though, the autopsy report suggests a lot of work remains to be done.

The shooting death of another Black man by the hands of the Sacramento Police Department shook the community less than two years ago. In July 2016 Joseph Mann, 50, was shot and killed by two Sacramento police officers. Dash cam audio from the incident reveals one officer saying he was going to hit Mann with his car, with the other officer encouraging him to do so. The officers missed twice and eventually shot 18 bullets, 14 of which hit Mann.

It took much longer for police to release any footage pertaining to the Mann shooting than for the Clark shooting, suggesting a change in the right direction.

After Mann’s death several policies were reformed, including one that requires any department footage of certain incidents, including officer shootings, to be released within 30 days.

In Clark’s shooting, however, officers muted their body cams at some point following the shooting. It is not yet clear why they were instructed to do this.

Seth W. Stoughton, an assistant law professor, told CNN that officers may mute video in the aftermath of a shooting so that something they say during that time is not misconstrued.

“The inclination among officers, Stoughton said, is not to record footage of an officer unwinding moments after a shooting because officers may not phrase things in the right way,” CNN reported.

However, Stoughton also noted at that point to not record “may be undermining the investigation.”

Hahn said he was not sure why the volume was muted, telling KCRA it was “one of those things we have to talk about.”

Over the weekend Hahn called for the Clark shooting to be the catalyst for lasting change, not an incident that soon dies down.

“If we are going to truly get better, not just talk for a couple of weeks and let things slide, we have to get better together,” he said. “That means police, community organizations and community members.”

anniversaries, but 50 years after King’s death, we should remember that he dreamed of much more than simply winning the fight for civil and voting rights. We should remember, as former AFSCME secretary-treasurer (and Memphis organizer) William Lucy told me some years ago, that “Dr. King really highlighted the great contradiction…. If you relieve the civil-rights shackles or barriers, that does not necessarily guarantee that your economic situation will change.

There is something wrong with the social structure. There is something wrong with the economic structure.” As King put it, when “profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.”

It might also be time to dispense with the standard notion of King as a topdown leader and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the New Left as the bottom-up movements of that time. Movements require many kinds of agitators, organizers, and leaders. We should embrace the many different movements fighting for rights and freedom today—women’s rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, peace and nonviolence—as well as people of all ethnicities. But we should also bring labor issues and union rights to the forefront of our concerns, as Coretta Scott King did after her husband’s death.

Advocating for a federal holiday in his memory, she pointed out that it would be the first one to honor an American who “gave his life in a labor struggle.”

Fifty years after his death, King’s message of agape love, or love for all, lives on. He urged that, while most of us think that “self-preservation is the first law of life,” in fact “other-preservation is the first law of life.” Ending racism, poverty, and war in a global economy and on a global scale requires everyone to develop an “overriding loyalty to mankind as a whole,” to choose love instead of hate.

From Memphis to Seattle and beyond, people who march and organize continue to draw inspiration from King, remembering him as a hero for the American working class, the poor, and the world’s oppressed peoples.

In Memphis, King called for “dangerous unselfishness” and declared “either we go up together or we go down together.”

Years earlier, he had told the AFL-CIO that the key human ideal must be solidarity, “a dream of a nation where all our gifts and resources are held not for ourselves alone but as instruments of service for the rest of humanity.”

Are we moving in that direction? Many are still asking, as Martin Luther King did in the last year of his life: “Where do we go from here: chaos or community?”

Environmental Chaos

In the March 22 issue we reported that at the current rate, by 2050 the prediction is that the mass of plastic pollution in the ocean will equal the mass of fish. As horrifying as that thought is, the climate-change predictions in the following article tell of an overheated world of mass migrations, melting glaciers, fire, droughts, extreme weather, and agricultural disruption that makes our characterization of the planet we’re leaving future generations as an overheated garbage dump, is not hyperbole, but rather a sad truth.

The young people now protesting against gun violence and their disdain for the adult population and political leaders who allow it to continue will only grow, and we will be guilty of the greatest sin of all time, the virtual destruction of the planet for human habitation. Thanks to Climate Disruption, Earth Is Already Losing Critical Biosphere Components ■■

wo weeks ago, I gave a keynote presentation about anthropogenic climate disruption (ACD) at a large sustainability conference in Chico, California. During the question-and-answer session following my talk, a student asked me what I thought the world would look like by 2050.

His question stopped me in my tracks. I had to pause and take a deep breath, to prepare myself emotionally for what I had to tell him.

Here is the gist of what I said: Based on years of research for my forthcoming book, The End of Ice, along with my work compiling these monthly climate disruption dispatches for four years now, I know that by 2050, we will be inhabiting a dramatically different planet. I believe we will already have tens -- if not hundreds -- of millions of climate refugees from sea-level rise and conflicts born of lack of food and water. What we currently call extreme weather events (massive floods, droughts, hurricanes) will have long since become the norm. In the US, growing food in the Midwest and the central valley of California will be extremely difficult, if not largely impossible, due to shifting weather patterns of rainfall and drought. Some swaths of the world, including the Gulf states in the Middle East and parts of the US Southwest, will be largely uninhabitable due to simply being too hot. Greenland and the Antarctic will both be experiencing dramatically advanced melting, and most of the glaciers in the contiguous 48 US states will have long since ceased to exist. And given that we are officially already amidst the Sixth Mass Extinction Event of the planet, which humans triggered, the biological annihilation that comes with this is happening apace.

This portrait might seem far-fetched to some. But to understand that this is our future, all we need to do is look at what is already happening around the planet.

In early March, Arctic sea ice hit record lows for that time of year. Along with stunningly warm temperatures for the region (which scientists called "crazy, crazy, stuff"), researchers there are continuing to scratch their heads about the dramatic ACD-fueled changes besetting the Arctic.

The biosphere is convulsing.

Unchecked ACD -- which appears likely to continue, since governments (particularly that of the United States) are not preparing to undertake the kinds of drastic mitigation measures that might have any impact -- will dramatically degrade global fish catch over the coming centuries, and may well reduce total oceanic plant life for a millennium, according to a recent study. The study also noted that these changes cannot be reversed until the climate cools.

The amount of warming humans have already caused on Earth is, according to a recent

study, likely already enough to melt more than one-third of all the world’s glaciers outside of Antarctica and Greenland, regardless of ongoing efforts to reduce fossil fuel emissions. The study analyzed the lag between global temperature increases and the retreat of glaciers and found a relatively slow response of glaciers to planetary warming. Researchers noted that it will take until 2100, at least, to see any benefits from serious mitigation efforts over the next decades -- assuming those efforts actually happen. One of the scientists involved in the study told Carbon Brief that this glacier loss is already «baked in» to the system and has been overlooked, which essentially means «we really are on course to obliterate many of these mountain landscapes.»

Meanwhile, a recently published World Wildlife Fund report has predicted catastrophic losses in the world's forests: As much as 60 percent of the plants and half of all the animals are predicted to disappear by 2100, if temperatures rise by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (1.5°C). The scientific consensus states that a 1.5°C rise is a given; in fact, some prominent scientists believe an increase of 3.2°C by 2100 is most likely, given current national commitments. If emissions remain unchanged, which is the current actual trajectory, a 4.5°C rise is the forecast. It is worth noting that oil giants BP and Shell are planning on 5°C of planetary warming by 2050.

Taking all this information in is necessary if we are to see the world clearly and live our lives accordingly.

Disturbingly, it is now in need of an upgrade, thanks to ACD. Norway, which built and maintains the vault, is having to invest $13 million to upgrade the vault to make room for more seeds and make it more resilient, given a recent flooding event there. Last year, flooding at the entrance of the vault prompted the Norwegian government to begin looking into the upgrade, which is now going to move forward.

Bad news also abounds for Earth’s animal species. A recently published study in the journal Nature Climate Change showed that Antarctica's king penguins could be extinct by 2100, due primarily to ACD impacts and overfishing.

In Florida, research revealed recently that nearly all the sea turtles being born there are female, due to higher temperatures.

Obviously, if this trend continues, which it almost assuredly will, there will be no more sea turtles in Florida.

Meanwhile over in Europe, the authors of a recent report out of France's National Museum of Natural History and the National Centre for Scientific Research showed a «catastrophic» decline in France's bird populations. The trend signals the possibility of Europe's farmland turning into desert, a situation that would ultimately threaten all human beings. The scientists warned of a wider crisis of biodiversity -- or lack thereof -- across that continent, with ACD impacts and pesticides to blame. This comes on the heels of concerning news of a 76 percent decline in the abundance of flying insects in Germany over the last 27 years.

The World Bank recently warned that if dramatic intervention doesn't occur on the ACD front, 140 million people across three regions (sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America) of the Earth will become refugees between now and 2050.

An example of one of the factors driving such mass movement of people can be found in California, where a recent report citing nearly 90 different studies found that warming temperatures could alter where key crops grow across that state. Bearing in mind that California produces roughly two-thirds of all the produce in the US, the report notes that ACD could decrease the yield of some of the crops grown in California by as much as 40 percent by 2050.

In Vermont, warming temperatures, particularly during the winter, are causing extreme weather events and unpredictable rainfall, which experts recently warned was making forests across that state particularly vulnerable to ACD. Boreal forests and moose populations will be the hardest hit, warned the study.

The world’s northernmost regions have not escaped extreme weather. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, known as the Doomsday Vault, was created to protect the world’s seeds in the event of cataclysmic ACD impacts

As is often the case in the spring, the watery realms of the planet are where the ACD impacts are most evident.

Widespread ongoing winter drought across the US, from Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri to the Dakotas, Texas and California, have many farmers worried about this year being a repeat of 2012, the worst drought in the US since the Dust Bowl. At present, the winter drought is worse than it was in 2012.

The problem extends beyond those states.

In Colorado, at the time of this writing, snow would need to fall at 200 percent of the state’s average through the end of April for its snowpack to catch up to normal. Water managers there are keeping a leery eye on reservoirs as summer looms on the horizon.

Colorado is not an anomaly. Snowpack across the Western US has been dramatically lower than it was a century ago. A recent study showed the average snowpack in the west has dropped by nearly one-third since 1915. That is equivalent to the decrease we’ve see from permanently draining Nevada’s Lake Mead, the single largest man-made reservoir in the US. Changing weather patterns and warmer year-round temperatures have scientists in Western Canada -- a place you wouldn’t think needs to worry about water issues -- worried

about running out of water in the future. For example, in 2017 there was a record amount of snowfall in one region, but even all that snow was still not enough to prevent a drought on the southern part of the prairies below it.

The changing climate there also means the snowpack is melting faster and earlier than usual, which means that water is moving through river basins faster and leaving them dry before the end of summer.

On the other side of the world, New Zealand is experiencing similar concerns.

Its alps have become incredibly barren, as a recent aerial survey shows how the loss of snow there is now being called "extreme."

A recently released UN report on the state of the world's water warned that more than 5 billion people could suffer water shortages by 2050 due largely to ACD and increasing demand.

Furthermore, extreme weather events like major floods and extreme rainfall events have surged more than 50 percent this decade alone, and are now happening four times more often than they were in just 1980, according to a recent paper.

Meanwhile, seas continue to rise. A recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) report warned that sea level rise will rapidly worsen flooding that is already happening in coastal communities around the US. The report warned that some cities will see flooding on a daily basis by 2100.

Adding to this, another recent study showed that lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet are now forming further inland, meaning they are now potentially threatening to speed up ice flow once they drain to the glacial floor.

In Antarctica the news is no better. The absence of sea ice near that continent over the past six weeks (as of the time of this writing) has deeply concerned scientists conducting research there.

In addition to paying attention to large, continental changes, it’s important to take note of ACD-driven shifts on the level of microorganisms. A recent report showed that excessive rates of carbon dioxide (CO2) affect the health of critical microorganisms in the oceans, which could potentially undermine the base of vital marine food chains. This is happening largely due to ocean acidification, a result of ACD.

Fire Given the low snowpack levels across much of the Western US, this summer is already expected to be another above-average wildfire season for much of that part of the country. Since snowpack functions as a water source through much of the summer, when warmer temperatures cause it to melt off faster than normal, drier conditions ensue.

As is always the case with extreme weather events, none of these fires can be solely attributed to ACD. However, climate disruption’s impacts are a key contributing factor to how often they occur, as well as to their intensity.

hen I was two years old, my family moved into a two-story stucco and brick house on East 27th Street in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Soon after my second birthday, my dad and my grandpa planted an apple tree in the postage stamp-sized garden.

After that, it was always known as “Laurie’s Tree,” even though I had a younger brother. I knew it was spring when the branches turned white with apple blossoms.

Summer wasn’t quite so pretty. The small red apples that fell from the tree in the summer were bitter and filled with worms. My dad and grandpa argued a few times about spraying the tree with pesticide but there was no such thing as organic pesticide in the 1950s. Everything was poisonous and they decided that it was safer not to eat the wormy apples than to fill the air with toxic chemicals.

Nevertheless, my tree became a special landmark. In 1954, my BFF Abby baptized me under the tree using a garden hose to wash away my sins “in the

name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.”

Years later, after I graduated college, I became a photographer and journalist. I traveled through the deserts and the jungles of South America taking pictures of people who had never seen a camera or, for that matter, anyone with blue eyes. This was way before cell phones or the Internet.

Phones were landlines and they didn’t work so well when it came to overseas calls. We had to rely on letters and postcards which could take a month to get wherever they were going--in either direction.

So it was hard, sometimes, waking up in a strange country where I didn’t know anyone. I was often lonely and sometimes more than a little scared. That’s when I would see my tree in my mind’s eye. It reminded me that no matter where I went or how long I was away, there was a postage stamp garden in Brooklyn where my apple tree was waiting for me to find my way home.

In Australia, a new study reveals that the country’s record-setting 2012 heat wave was responsible for the destruction of roughly 1,000 square kilometers of seagrass meadows. which had acted as a repository for CO2. When the meadows were destroyed, the disaster released as much as 9 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, nearby New Zealand experienced its hottest summer on record last year. It definitively broke with normal temperatures, clocking in at a shocking 2.1°C above the past 35-year average temperature.

Back in the US, USGS data has revealed how spring has arrived much earlier than normal for much of the country, a clear indicator of how ACD is continuing to shift overall climate patterns.

In the Arctic, in fact, spring is beginning an average of 16 days earlier now than it did just one decade ago. A study in the journal Scientific Reports noted an increase in the number of warm temperature records in the spring, along with changes to the timing of bird migrations, flowers blooming and other seasonal indicators.

What makes this even more disconcerting is the fact that scientists have found a direct and strong link between warmer Arctic temperatures and abnormally high snowfall amounts and frigid temperatures further south of that region. So, for example, the severe weather that has been impacting the northeastern US this spring, is linked directly to the ACD-related warm wave happening across the Arctic region.

Lastly in this section, but perhaps most importantly, thawing Arctic permafrost is now likely to release more methane than previously expected. Methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, as it is 100 times stronger over a 10-year time scale. The new study found that waterlogged wetland soils will produce considerably more methane than previously predicted.

Denial and Reality There is never a dull moment in the Trump administration’s land of ACD-denial.

A recent and excellent article published at The Conversation outlined the four primary methods used by this administration to deny or hide the reality of ACD. These methods are, according to the article: making documents more difficult to find on government websites, burying web pages, altering language, and silencing the science. Truthout’s Mike Ludwig also detailed how ACD, as a threat to the US, has literally «gone missing» under Trump.

Meanwhile, the cabinet continues to be filled with ACD deniers. One of the more recent additions has been hardline climate denier Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State, who along with having longstanding close ties to the Koch brothers, in 2013 said during a C-SPAN interview: “There are scientists who think lots of different things about climate change. There’s some who think we’re warming, there’s some who think that the last 16 years have shown a pretty stable climate environment.”

A Trump Administration official even went so far recently as to say that USGS scientists went “outside their wheelhouse” by writing that ACD has “dramatically reduced” glaciers in Montana. One of the scientists who bore this attack responded, “This is what we do.... It is our wheelhouse.”

Trump administration US Energy Secretary, Rick Perry, who thinks wearing thick-framed glasses makes him appear more intelligent, recently said that international efforts to reduce fossil fuel use were "immoral."

Meanwhile, EPA head Scott Pruitt, already an avid ACD denier, recently disputed evolution.

On the reality front, thousands of scientists from the 22 Commonwealth countries have urged that stronger government action on ACD needs to be taken if there is hope to keep planetary warming lower than 2°C. Underscoring that urgency, global demand for energy increased by 2.1 percent in 2017 -- more than twice the previous year’s rate, according to the International Energy Agency.

According to the same agency, energy-related CO2 emissions also increased by 1.4 percent during 2017, reaching a historic high of 32.5 gigatons.

Despite glaring warning signs from around the planet, governments around the world are not taking dramatic measures to mitigate ACD impacts. In fact, the US government continues to refuse to even acknowledge that those impacts exist. The world’s most powerful forces are taking a business-as-usual approach, as we are hurtled deeper into the Sixth Mass Extinction event.

he 2018 Major League Baseball season is underway and for the New York Yankees physically, it’s been a tough one out the gates. One big concern for the team has been their starting pitching rotation. After one week through the five-man rotation, pitchers Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, C.C. Sabathia, Sonny Gray and Jor-

dan Montgomery all had quality starts. The Yankee bats have been what we all thought they would be, just not from the players we expected. We all heard about the dangerous hitting trio of Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez. Although it’s only been a week, it has been Yankee shortstop Didi Gregorious who has been swinging a hot bat in the first week. In the team’s home opener, Gregorious hit 2 home runs and 8 RBI, becoming the first Yankee shortstop to ever record 8 RBI in a game and second-most RBI in a game for the team since Alex Rodriguez’s 10 RBI game 13 years ago.

The team’s first issue to deal with in the

young season is the injury bug. The team is thin as far as their outfielders go. Starting outfielder Aaron Hicks went down this week with an oblique injury, Jacoby Ellsbury is dealing with an oblique and hip issue, and Clint Frazier is still recovering from a concussion he suffered in a game in spring training. The team called up outfielder Billy McKinney, but he was put on the disabled list after injuring his shoulder. Thus, leading to veteran Brett Gardner having to be relied on more as far as playing time; Aaron Judge playing more right field without rest and Stanton playing left field, a position where he struggled during spring training.

For now, the injuries the Yankees have suffered do not appear to be serious, but are nagging ones. Ellsbury did suffer a bit of a setback, Hicks should be back in the lineup in another week, Frazier will begin playing minor league games next week. The season is very young and if a team were to have a “minor” injury, the best time would be the month of April rather than a key player being out as the team is pushing for a playoff spot.

So far, so good for the Yankees. We shall see what this team is really made of once they get their outfielding core back where Manager Aaron Boone can then rotate some days off for his players.

Why can’t we talk about reparations?

A congressional candidate broaches an "unmentionable" topic I’m running for Congress in Indiana, and I’ve been warned to stay away from “radical” issues. This shouldn’t be one.

In 2016, two years after Ta-Nehisi Coates’ eye-opening article in The Atlantic, “The Case for Reparations,” Bernie Sanders was asked if he would support paying reparations to the descendants of American slaves. Sanders had written and spoken a lot about issues of racial inequality, but still his answer was no. “Its likelihood of getting through Congress is nil,” he said. The real problem, Sanders insisted, was the rigged economy.

That seemed true enough, so the conversation ended. There was no serious national dialogue on the topic in the 2016 election cycle because no serious politician would touch it. If the left-most Democratic presidential candidate in recent memory wouldn’t make reparations a part of his platform in 2016, why should congressional candidates in 2018? Wouldn’t that brand you as a radical?

Last year, when I began my run for Congress in Indiana’s Ninth District, I was told what many middle America candidates are told: You need to run a “safe” campaign.

What this basically means, in practice, is that if someone asks you about guns or abortion, you pivot to economic issues. “I get that you’re concerned about being dronebombed for owning an AR-15, but wouldn’t you rather talk about how to protect your 401(k)?” I’m still getting that advice today.

So a couple of weeks ago, when I put a blurb on my campaign website in support of a commission on reparations, some called it a suicide run.

The advice to run a milquetoast, whitewashed campaign comes mainly from D.C. types who fetishize flyover states, but also tend to underestimate the people who live in them. People here in Indiana value honesty and forthrightness, from both the Right and the Left. We are also predisposed to thinking of politicians as liars. Economic weasel words might work for some candidates in some places, especially if that candidate is concerned with little other than getting elected in a wave year. But as a long-term strategy, it’s not good to hide from tough topics around here. We won’t trust you.

More importantly, in light of the monstrosity that is the Trump Administration, many of us recognize a different set of priorities. With the greed of those in power finally on full display, unashamed of itself or its aims, my generation now has an opportunity to do what the baby boomers would not: make a better world. Not just for ourselves and our own families, but for everyone. We need more than a banner midterm year. We need real, lasting change.

The precursor to this real change is real discourse. We cannot play defense and expect to win any victories for the people who need them most. We must have the courage to take the moral high ground, especially where it can easily be seized. Reparations is one of those areas.

Our history of slavery, segregation, redlining, selective policing and mass incarceration has left an ever-widening racial wealth gap. Closing this gap should be a critical part of a mission to improve America. We can’t get it done by pivoting to the economy whenever race comes up. Take, for example, the recent study from Brandeis University determining that external factors do nothing to correct the racial wealth gap. Education, full-time work, a stable family life -- none

of these things narrow the chasm between Black and white.

Another study shows that Black people who are born into wealth fare worse than white kids born into poor families. White wealth is now, on average, at least 10 times that of Black wealth. For the 12 percent or so of our population whose ancestors were brought here to be property, raising wages and offering free college, without doing more to rectify these enormous imbalances, isn’t likely to “unrig” the economy. Even the most aggressive affirmative action program -- which would almost certainly be unconstitutional in the eyes of this Supreme Court -- would not do the job.

The data suggests that different measures might need to be taken if we are to seriously address economic justice between the races.

These measures may, at first, appear radical.

But here’s the thing: reparations are not at all a radical proposition. Former Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., pushed a reparations commission bill for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2017, and at one time had the support of around 70 other members of Congress. Before that, the Reagan Administration paid reparations to Japanese families who had lost everything they owned when they were sent to internment camps during World War II. In fact, many ethnically motivated atrocities in the recent history of the industrialized world have resulted in compensation paid by the wrongdoers.

Ultimately, assessing the feasibility of reparations is the right thing to do. We shouldn’t hide from it. We should talk about it. We should normalize it.

When I proposed marijuana legalization at the beginning of this campaign, I lost support among many Old Guard Democrats who insisted that I wasn’t a “serious candidate.”

After her return to society, Winnie remained a freedom fighter, maintaining the acumen and fortitude to help organize people across the globe in a long, but eventually successful, campaign to press for the release of her husband and for the abolition of apartheid. It is not often noted just how instrumental she was in these victories. She personally petitioned a government official to begin the proceedings for her husband’s release. Then prior to his release in 1990, Winnie was offered a home to live in with her husband in a remote area. She refused, saying that she would live with him only when he was rightfully returned to his people. And she prevailed.

Her time with her husband would not be long, however. They were divorced six years later after a controversial trial, with him citing loneliness and accusing her of an affair. She countered with accusations of her own that she did not quite make clear. It appeared that being apart for close to 30 years had taken an almost-inevitable toll on the marriage.

Despite a protracted character-assassination campaign by the former apartheid government, Winnie held the hearts and minds of her most ardent supporters and would later

regain the support of the people overall. In 1991, she was implicated in the murder of “Stompie” (James Seipel), supposedly ordering it because he was a police informant. Her years of active resistance had always been marked by heartbreaking betrayals by people she thought were friends and allies, but who were actually sent by the government to spy on her. In this case, the state imprisoned close members of her team, then threatened them with death (capital punishment) if they did not testify that Winnie ordered and orchestrated the kidnapping of Stompie and other youth. They complied, and she was arrested.

Winnie’s six-year jail sentence was later appealed and reduced to a fine and a twoyear suspended sentence – proof according to many – that it was known all along that she had no involvement. But despite the support at home, the intended damage to her international reputation had been done, chiefly because the world was led to believe that she had been charged with murder, although she never was.

A 2017 film titled, Winnie, premiered on PBS in February. In the documentary, director Pascale Lamche interviews former members of the government’s surveillance and legal team who lay out, step-by-step, exactly how they went about framing Winnie and turning public opinion against her.

Unrelated to the film, however, is the fact that some of Winnie’s public statements and

private missteps served to bolster the efforts of her accusers. Although her final days were marked by victory with the passing of the landownership law, she suffered a defeat as well when the Supreme Court of this new South Africa ruled that she held no claim to Nelson Mandela’s village home, which she’d hoped to secure for their daughters. Her memory, her mission and her sacrifices will always be remembered, however.

The sacrifices, the leadership and the stamina which she displayed, not only during the time of the battle for independence, but beyond that time, are memorable and exemplary. by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. and other mainstream Democrats who would not have touched it in elections past. This should be ample proof that we can make a better world just by being brave enough to talk about a few good ideas.

A reparations commission can become a serious topic of national conversation. And it should. Like marijuana legalization, like the abolition of ICE, like a guaranteed jobs program and like Medicare for all, it’s a good idea even if it seems radical at first. In fact, one might reasonably suggest that continuing to criminalize a plant, maintaining a brute squad to break up families, denying medical care to people who can’t afford it or refusing to atone for a brutal, centuries-long regime of apartheid, are “radical” positions relative to the rest of the world in 2018. If we never talk about these issues, we never get to talk about why our ideas are good, or why the old ways are bad. Contrary to popular belief, people here in Indiana (and elsewhere) can recognize a good policy proposal, no matter who or where it comes from. It’s a candidate’s job to make sure they actually hear it.
