Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Les Payne Passes
T
hose who cherish courage and integrity in the press suffered an inconsolable loss with the passing of Les Payne. The Pulitzer- and multiaward-winning journalist died at his home on Monday at age 76. He leaves a legacy of unparalleled accomplishment in his field and he was respected by all who knew and loved him, read and learned from him. Born in Tusaclaoosa, Alabama in 1941, Payne later moved with his family, first to
Connecticut, then later to New York City, with a stint in the Army in between, where he edited the Army’s newspaper, wrote speeches for General Westmoreland and retired as a captain. In the late 1960s Payne began working at Newsday as a managing editor for national, international and science news. He would remain there for 40 years, also contributing also as a syndicated columnist and a reporter.
