Virginia Church Pays $100,000 Worth of Debt for Howard University Students Black students are more likely to borrow, less able to make progress on paying down their loans, and almost half defaulted on their school loans. Many do not graduate. Now 34 seniors can.

Jayme S. Ganey, diversityinc.com Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., decided to clear the debt of 34 Howard students.

95 percent of Howard students are on financial aid. About 4,000 church members fasted and prayed for 30 days, saving money to donate to something charitable.

They donated $100,000 to 34 students.

More than 44 million borrowers collectively owe $1.5 trillion in student loan debt in the United States.

Data from the US Department of Education showed that 12 years after entering college, Black students who took on debt for their undergraduate education owed more on their federal student loans than they originally borrowed.

Studies also show Black students are

percent of students who receive those grants graduate.

Some of the Howard students were not sure how they were going to graduate because they couldn’t complete tuition payments. But now, they can focus on their academics and their plans for the future after college.

Alfred Street Baptist Church was founded in 1803, and many of the HBCUs were founded in the 1800s, including Howard University, founded in 1867. of people living in states and localities could reduce representation in Congress and funding for New York and other states and localities across the country. This would have far-reaching and long-lasting effects and is antithetical to the purpose of the Census. The District Court recognized these facts in ruling in favor of our challenge and we look forward to seeing the Trump Administration in court once again.”

In January 2019, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, ruled

in favor of the New York Attorney General’s Office in a lawsuit to block the Trump Administration from demanding citizenship information in the 2020 Census. The initial lawsuit was filed in April 2018. New York is leading a coalition of 34 states, cities, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors in this case.

The multistate and city suit was consolidated with a case brought by multiple non-profit groups.

Lavarin said the idea of donating to Howard came to him during prayer.

“I thought, ‘What better way to celebrate Black History Month than investing in the young, Black heroes of HBCUs?’” he said.

Queens BP Katz Responds to Amazon’s Withdrawal

UEENS, NY – Borough President Melinda Katz stated the following in response to Amazon’s announcement that it is withdrawing plans to build its second headquarters in Long Island City.

“We all want jobs to come to Queens, and Amazon used the promise of job creation to extract major concessions for this project. But after last month’s City Council hearing, it became increasingly clear that they had no intentions of being good neighbors and committing to the required negotiations,” said Borough President Katz. “They rejected our values of supporting working people and were unwilling to work with our local communities toward a mutually beneficial resolution. New York has the best tech work force in the nation, much of which is here in Queens, so if Amazon wants to take their jobs somewhere else with a lesser work force so they can undercut wages and workers’ rights, that’s their choice.”

Protesting the President on President's Day ■■

O

n Presidents Day in Union Square Park, a big crowd of New Yorkers joined citizens across the nation in observing the holiday by broadcasting their feelings about the president and his administration’s policies. The park’s plaza in front of the steps, a familiar protest site, may not have held so many people since Trayvon Martin’s parents joined demonstrators after his murder. People were there to express their outrage over Donald Trump’s calling for a state of emergency because his border wall vanity project was not funded. Neither were they pleased with his plans to get the money without government approval.

Mick Mulvaney, acting White House Chief of Staff said last week, “We should have sufficient money this year,” to fund the 234 miles of wall Trump says will cost $5.7 billion. Declaring an emergency is the tool Trump says he’ll use to redirect $3.5 billion from the Defense Department’s approved construction budget because the projects it had lined up “didn’t sound too important to me” said Trump. The redirection of $2.5 billion from the Department’s drug-battling war chest and $600 million from the drug forfeiture program at the Treasury Department would be accomplished under the executive authority he enjoyed prior to declaring the emergency.

Thus far, the 16 states that have signed onto a lawsuit against the president are, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Virginia.

of this policy and about the loss of monies in the budget earmarked for state-improvements and other funding.

“Today on President’s Day, we take President Donald Trump to court to block his misuse of presidential power,” said Becerra.

“We’re suing President Trump to stop him from unilaterally robbing taxpayer funds lawfully set aside by Congress for the people of our states. For most of us, the Office of the Presidency is not a place for theatre.”

Also suing the president are Public Citizen, acting on behalf of a Texas wildlife preservation group, the Frontera Audubon Society and three Texans whose properties have been identified as future border wall construction sites.

New York has already filed recent suits against Trump on behalf of victims of his charitable foundation.

About this new suit, Letitia James said, “We’ve joined 15 AGs in filing a lawsuit

challenging President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency and his attempt to divert funding appropriated by Congress for other purposes. Declaring a National Emergency when one does not exist is immoral and illegal.”

And of course, Trump did not help his case when he said that he knew he didn’t really need to declare a state of emergency at this time, leading his critics to point out that if one has the option to take an action now or later, it’s not an emergency.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK NYC residents and media are still confounded by the loss of its AMAZON suitor and 25,000 jobs. Governor Cuomo is livid, but his remarks are measured. Hizzoner de Blasio maligns Amazon and its duplicity.

Fingers of victory or blame are being pointed in many directions, none where they really belong, at Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio for negotiating the AMAZON deal with its huge tax breaks without benefit of input from the NYS Legislature nor the NYC Council.

NYC needs a cooling-off period. The enmity between the City Council and Councilman Rev. Ruben Diaz requires immediate détente. Last week, the Council dissolved its newly-created For-Hire Vehicles Committee, which Rev. Diaz, Sr. chaired, by a vote of 35 out of 51. That was in response to his claim that the Council is run by the “homosexual community.” The City Council approved the committee creation, in a nod to the Bronx Democratic machine for its support of Corey Johnson, who is gay, to City Council Speaker. Diaz, Sr. has made homophobic remarks for years. The Council wanted an apology and/or resignation from Rev. Diaz for his City Council leadership remarks. Diaz says NO. The Council is threatening to expel Rev. Diaz for his callous words. When did “freedom of speech” die in the City Council? In 2017, Diaz won the Primary with 40% of the vote. The City Council needs to move on with affairs of the city, not petty retribution schemes.

This is the last reminder of the 2/26 NYC Public Advocate Special Election and the importance of your vote. African-Americans hold no citywide elected office since Letitia James became the NYS Attorney General.

The Government of Ghana has declared 2019 as the “Year of Return for African-Americans to return to Ghana and reconnect and reclaim their ancestral heritage.” The God Box Foundation and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute presents, “God Box Talks into the Wilderness,” an interfaith dialogue between Pan-African religious and spiritual leaders. RIP: Literary lioness Andrea Levy, 62, died last week. The London-born Levy was the daughter of Jamaican immigrants who relocated to England after WWII, responding to Britain’s call to come to help rebuild the country. The group is known as the “Winrush Generation.” She started writing in her 30s.

Her quasi-autobiographical novels, “Small Island” and “The Long Song,” chronicled the lives of the Caribbean Diaspora living in England and the undercurrents of racism.

Last year, the Winrush Generation came under attack by the British Government who questions its citizenry about its presence of almost 70 years. Members of the group lost their jobs, health benefits and other privileges afforded citizens. They are treated like “Dreamers” in Trump’s America or like the Haitians who lived in the Dominican Republic for 60 years and were exiled as noncitizens a few years ago. The Winrush Generation and their descendants live in a “citizenship limbo” in Britain. They really need a 14th Amendment. The recipient of

many literary accolades, Andrea Levy’s “Long Song” was short-listed for the prestigious Man Booker Award.

RIP: Native New Yorker Peter Alan Harper, 68, died on December 13, 2018.

Harper was a poet/writer headquartered as a business writer at the Associated Press in New York. He organized journalism workshops and taught Black history. He earned a master’s degree in Fine Arts at CCNY in 2014. Harper’s Homegoing service will be held at Imagenation, located at 2031 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard, Harlem, on April 6 at 2 pm.

A Joyful Noise, A Quiet Place

he New York State of Black, Puerto Rican and Asian Legislators 48th Annual Conference took place in Albany this past weekend. Lawmakers, business owners and community leaders statewide converged onto Albany to discuss the various issues that affect us both as individual towns and districts, and as a collective statewide body. Downtown Albany was abuzz with inspiration, with the hotels and the streets alike teeming with an intergenerational mass of doers, movers and shakers all looking to make their mark, connect to the right person or just to enhance their professional portfolio while having a good time.

This was my first time at the Caucus. I attended for a few reasons; I was extended an invitation to speak on a panel about generational wealth, I’ve been wanting to get upstate to Albany and to neighboring Troy in order to get a feel of the area and its real estate opportunities, and most importantly I went to the Caucus looking for the stories. As a writer, that’s always the most important part of traveling anywhere. You want the story, the thread that binds people to a place, or to an event, or to one another. Find the story and you find the meaning.

The Caucus is an amazing event to attend. It is a place for community guys and business guys to connect with policy makers and legislators; spending mornings coming to common ground on the issues, and spending evenings celebrating life. It reminded me of an HBCU homecoming, it had that kind of feel walking through Empire State Plaza, running into old acquaintances and people from the community, shopping with the dozens of

vendors in the corridor that connects the Egg to the Legislative Office Building, seeing the representation of the Black Greek organizations. The access that you have to the political leaders in your area alone makes the trip worth it, you can’t put a dollar value on the ability to pitch an idea to the right person just because you happened to be sharing an elevator, or eating at the same counter, or meeting at the bar while you both wait for drinks. That paradigm is why attending the Caucus makes sense, and this particular Caucus had even another layer of energy attached to it because of the record amount of new lawmakers elected to various seats. So, while there were panels dedicated to climate change and how to build and sustain non-profits, the bigger discussion in the halls, in the hotels and in the streets was about the possibilities rooted in a renewed spirit of hope, built upon the new opportunities to affect change.

I wasn’t in Caucus mode for the whole time though. I spent the bulk of my time as I like to do, amongst the locals, doing local things and hearing local perspective.

I’m a regular guy, put me in a castle to rub shoulders with the high-born, and I’ll find my way into the kitchen to have a beer with the staff. It’s just my nature to find a regular pace to veer into from the fast lane. So, I paid attention to Troy. I stayed in an apartment nestled in a beautiful Victorian building, a stone’s throw away from the Hudson River.

The apartment is a writer’s paradise; snuggled into a quiet block, with a rustic decor and a window with a storytelling view of the city outside. There are a bunch of breathtaking homes in Troy, their beauty worn down

At the turn of the 20th Century, Troy, New York was sitting at the center of the American Industrial Revolution. It’s output of iron and steel was matched only by Pittsburgh. At one point, Troy was the fourth wealthiest city in the country. That was around the time that much of the Victorian architecture and the massive private homes were built. When the river was the bloodline for industry, the city of Troy flourished.

However, as industrial business declined, so too did the city’s economy. Nowadays, the quiet city’s biggest private employer is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, or RPI, pivoting the emphasis of the city from steel and iron and into more hi-tech and creative business models.

I visited Tech Valley Game Space on 3rd Street. It’s a non-profit organization that provides a tech space for game developers and computer folk to mentor, educate and introduce new tech to the community-at-large.

I had lunch at Little Pecks on Broadway, and learned that the owner of the place is a guy from Brooklyn that still travels back to Brooklyn every Sunday just to have Sunday dinner with his grandmother. I met a guy who takes the wood from out of the Hudson River and repurposes it into furniture, and a Lyft driver that wanted to find a good girl to have kids with because he was 28 and didn’t want to wait until after 35 to start a family.

What I found in Troy were men and women working hard to live the American dream. I’m not talking liberty and justice, I’m talking the belief that your passion and your attitude are more than enough to sustain your life. Good people, doing good things to live a good life.

That was the story.

I met with a State Senator, and I met with a guy in dirty overalls with paint on his hands, and my weekend in the Capital District showed me that both of those men have the power to change a community.

Climate Change, Equity and Justice “Transition is inevitable, justice is not.” This was the message of the panel on Climate Change and it reflects the driving passion of individuals and small organizations across the state. Responses to the changing climate will affect the economy and it is important that those low-income communities that traditionally are most impacted with ongoing ecological, economic and political deprivation be protected and empowered.

That is the goal of the New York State Climate and Communities Protection Act which seeks to cut 100% of greenhouse gas pollution while mandating an “equity screen” that ensures agencies set aside 40% of the public investment in achieving that emission goal to be reinvested in disadvantaged communities.

Building and Keeping Generational Wealth

he Caucus Panel on Generational Wealth was not about jobs, it centered on the need to have an equity stake in production, that is to own and build businesses. The obstacles to this range from childhood trauma, attitudes in the home about money; “it’s not what you earn, it’s what you save,” and access to capital faced by those on the low end of wealth inequality.

This workshop equipped caucus attendees with the tools to bridge gaps in access and opportunities related to entrepreneurship,

technology, media and more. The panelists for this event engaged attendees in handson icebreakers and activities that help them learn more about where they are in the wealth-building process and how they could take their wealth goals to the next level.

Many participants shared that the session felt immensely relatable and tangible.

Panelists on the road to success is also about having the opportunity to build on personal equity. It also made no sense for someone with a 4.0 in computer science to

be working for the MTA instead of in a hightech industry where they can create their own business.

The panelists filled a representation void attendees traditionally experience, often seeing few people that look like them successful in these spaces and in their immediate communities. The panelists for this workshop included entrepreneurs overseeing 5+ organizations, a Forbes magazine contributing writer, former Obama White House team member, founder of a $5 million

Venture Capital firm, model, actor, social activists and more. At the conclusion of the event, there was a large intergenerational dialogue with questions from seasoned pros, parents and young entrepreneurs that was beautiful to witness. The event was very well-attended during caucus weekend with nearly 100 participants.

Celebrating 10 years of HIV/AIDS Advocacy ■■

he largest workshop at this year’s NYS Black, Puerto Rican and Asian Legislative Caucus was a discussion about ending epidemics in communities of color. It was held in the well of the Legislative Office Building, an open area that was filled on both sides to hear the information being presented.

The panelists were a “who’s who” in downstate politics - Cumbo, Mosley, Gonzalez. And while each of the panelists are an amazing representation of what our city has to offer, the warmest smile in the room belonged to the founder of the organization co-sponsoring the event, Divinah Bailey of Watchful Eye. The only thing more recognizable than Divinah “Dee” Bailey’s smile is her work ethic and her commitment to ensuring that HIV/AIDS remains a part of every community’s public health agenda.

This April, Ms. Bailey will be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Watchful Eye, an organization that she founded in her native community of Bed-Stuy, whose mission is to encourage through basic education, prevention and working with indigenous leadership in the community, to spread

the HIV/AIDS prevention message and to inspire people to get tested.

The former chief negotiator for the United Auto Workers Security and Pension Plan says that HIV/AIDS advocacy became her calling as a result of the disease hitting home: “I got into HIV/AIDS advocacy for a very personal reason. My cousin was infected with the disease back when no one knew its origin or understood why or where it came from. He lived with a lot of discrimination and stigma attached to his illness.

What we found was that a lot of people weren’t acknowledging HIV/AIDS in the Black community. I understood that Brooklyn, my home, needed a very intense look at the way that AIDS and HIV education and prevention was being handled. At that point, after counsel with a number of Brooklynites, elected officials and others, I was encouraged to come and open up an office in the middle of Bed-Stuy to concentrate specifically on looking at Brooklyn and the HIV/AIDS epidemic.”

Watchful Eye opened its doors for the first time on April 4, 2009. For the past 10 years, Dee Bailey has parlayed her

relationships and resources to build and maintain partnerships that have worked to help preach the message of HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Partnered with Black Veterans for Social Justice, the organization has spearheaded innovative campaigns such as their Red Ribbon Revitalization Campaign which places 8-foot banners on street poles in front of medical centers, churches and educational institutions in areas hit hard by HIV/AIDS. The key to spreading the word, according to Ms. Bailey, is by aligning the cause with other community institutions. “Through Watchful Eye and through our affiliations we have been able to cultivate meaningful relationships with policymakers, elected officials and clergy across the nation. Everywhere we go, people are putting HIV/AIDS at the forefront of their community agenda. From doing this work, we’ve developed relationships with a variety of organizations because our society realizes now that everybody is affected by HIV/AIDS.” Through her various affiliations, Dee Bailey has been able to deliver her message citywide. She’s even taken it to the circus.

Every year, Ms. Bailey serves for a stint as the Guest Ringmaster for the UniverSoul Circus, a move that is strategic to embedding the ideal of prevention into the community. “We are able to take an HIV/AIDS

Ten years after this daughter of the Bedford-Stuyvesant community opened the doors to Watchful Eye, she is still finding new and innovative ways to get the message of HIV/AIDS prevention into the public conversation. As long as HIV/AIDS is a community issue, Watchful Eye and Dee Bailey will be there to meet it head-on.

he primary goal for Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman was to display a much-improved winning product to take the field for 2019 that will be good enough to dethrone the rival and reigning World Champion Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have been quite active in free agency this winter by re-signing players like their ace Luis Severino (4 years/$40 million), J.A. Happ (2 years/$34 million), Zack Britton (3 years/$39 million--he also changed the H in his name to a K) and also coming to terms with former Colorado Rockie players such as Adam Ottavino, D.J. LaMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki. Aside from those deals, the free agent market has been very slow with a week of spring training in and still nearly a hundred players still unsigned. The two major players who are the highlight of this

year’s free agent class have not found a new team until…

Former Los Angeles Dodger and Baltimore Oriole Manny Machado, aside from Bryce Harper, is sought to be the hottest free agent in this year’s market and was indeed on the Yankees’ radar. Machado, 26, made his long-awaited decision this past Tuesday when he signed a 10-year/$300 million deal with the San Diego Padres. It is currently the richest signed contract in American sports history. Now I know what some Yankee fans may be thinking, “Yes, Machado is a dynamic hitter and a well-polished third baseman entering the prime ages of his career.” It was reported the Yankees presented a contract offer to Machado’s representatives in the 7-8 years around the $250 million-dollar range. From the feedback I had received from speaking with a few Yankee fans in Brooklyn, some are bothered the team did not up their offer and a few fans did not mind that the Yanks passed on a talent like

As we know by now, the Yankees will be without their starting shortstop Didi Gregorius until about June after undergoing Tommy John surgery in the winter. Shortstop is a position Machado is familiar with having played that position earlier in his career. The Yankees decided to go with Tulowitzki on a 1-year deal at a much cheaper price. Yes, “Tulo” has not played a game since 2017, after missing all of last year after having surgery on both of his heels. However, if he can get back to flashes of the player that he once was, then passing up on Machado would have been worth it. Machado comes with some baggage with his lack of maturity and lack of hustle being questioned in the past. Also, the Yankees stood to their guns by not willing to commit to a long-term deal. They saw how that went with Alex Rodriguez. Another thing to consider for the Our Time Press universe is that we tend to forget that we still have a

young and talented Miguel Andujar.

It’s hard to ignore the talent that Manny Machado possesses. With that said, I do believe the Yankees decision to not aggressively pursue him will not hurt them. Eventually, as the Bronx Bombers look towards the future, the team can spend their money wisely and look to lock up a few homegrown players on their roster like Dellin Betances, Gleyber Torres and Aaron Judge. They can also direct their attention to next year’s free agent pool when the Rockies’ Nolan Arenado will become a free agent. The team’s focus should be pitching and to spend their money wisely while continuing to develop their players in what is one of baseball’s top farm systems.

As great as Machado is, the Yankees will not regret passing up on him moving forward.

I Want a Public School: “How Hard Are You Really Trying?” Challenge…

ecently there was another of those interesting Facebook ‘challenges’ titled: “How Hard Did Aging Hit You?” (Give those creative Facebook algorithmicteers credit for their ability to keep coming up with ideas to get eyeballs to platform!) For my discriminating eyeballs, I always preferred the ‘matured’ photos; I also rejected the premise, and the I suspect additional purpose of the ‘challenge’, suggesting that we need to purchase ‘something’, conveniently advertised on Facebook, to delay our aging process. Anyway, there’s an education challenge I wish to issue: I want to challenge public education policy makers and schools to stop using phrases they don’t truly believe; those edu-poetic up-lifting statements that they neither honestly aspire to nor intend to carry out for all children.

Here, social media has not been helpful. Educators at every level can sound brave, committed and ‘tough’ on internet platforms, while in their daily practice/ work-space avoid the dangerous task of changing the underlying conditions that create and perpetuate learning inequalities.

Ideology is not phraseology, ‘sloganisms’ are not confirmative-actions; for it’s what

we actually believe and do for children that ultimately matters.

Here’s a few ‘greatest hits’ of the often spoken but rarely practiced educational phrases:

for. Any ‘racial integration plan’ that does not address the inequitable distribution of quality education, would end. Billionaires could invest money in efforts that actually work in raising poor student’s academic achievement like: closing societal opportunity gaps in: technology hardware-software and internet access, K-8 reading/writing enrichment, K-8 STEM labs in Title 1 schools, having students: ‘algebra ready’ by the end of 8th grade, radically expanding K-8 gifted & talented programs; healthcare, quality housing and food for families, creating employment for student’s parents, and providing students with access to out-ofschool informal educational experiences.

And if the 5-affirmations were truly adopted nationally, it would mean that all schools would be empowered to eliminate those rules and regulatory barriers that hindered student learning, as these schools would also be held publicly accountable for their admissions practices, disciplinary-expulsion policies and academic performance.

Further, college and university student admissions applications would soar; while the non-credit bearing ‘cleaning-up’ what was not learned in high school ‘college courses’ would disappear. People nationwide would begin

What if schools really acted like every student was under the protection of the ‘entire village’? Every school would be a full (social, medical, dentistry, optometry, nutrition, counseling, informal education, etc.) service school.

Those 5-affirmations are so powerful, that if public school systems were to truly believe, embrace and practice them: all ‘achievement gaps’ (real and contrived), student academic-underachievement, high failure & dropout rates (concentrated in some populations) would end. entering the education profession (receiving much higher salaries then the present pay scales) because education is where their heartwork is to be found. Our nation (and world) would reap the benefits of having millions of children realize their innate gifts and talents; imagine the scientific, medical, artistic-creative innovative and inventive ‘gifts’ we would communally enjoy. And, society would be able to fulfill its collective humane calling of making every child’s life matter.

The multibillion dollar (not really) ‘fixing’ poor students ‘gap-closing’ industry would need to create work somewhere else.

Personnel, from superintendents to schoolaides, would be required to be competent and effective, or be ‘counseled-out’ and into another profession. (A compassionate act, since the ‘chronically-unfit’ people currently working in K-12 education need to find their true passion/calling in life!)

Americans planning to be employed in our criminal-justice system, may want to consider another career path; since public education’s role in feeding and replenishing that system would end. And then there is the job-market ‘problem’ of what to do with so many young people who achieved academically by receiving a high quality educational experience. We would probably need to invent a new definition of what ‘work’ and ‘employment’ means in a highly educated society.

I’m not sure if I’ll get any takers on this challenge, and why should I? After all, we are in this special time in US history when we have a commander-in-chief of: words don’t matter, and what I say no matter how untrue, doesn’t matter. And so why not in the rhetorical realm of public education; where it does not matter that we say things that we have no intention of doing; for reasons that even R. Kelly understands: Because only certain children in our society really matter!
