hat is called “gentrification” has a number of causes, not only the multi-trillion dollar transfer of wealth amassed during a time of racial hostility. With the holiday shopping season upon us, please consider this: While we decry the fact that New York City spends only .3% with certified Black businesses, that percentage is probably not far off from what most African-Americans themselves will spend with Black businesses this holiday season and throughout the year. This is one of the reasons why we African-Americans can have a trillion dollars in spending power and everybody still be broke. While to the north, right across DeKalb Avenue, the Hasidim own the stores and the trucks that deliver the products they manufacture, brand and sell. While some of their business practices outside of the group can be problematical, what cannot be questioned is that they support their own people. And by doing so, are able to build communities ➔ Continued on page 4
