No Match For Nature's Fury

reeport, Grand Bahama (CNN) Miles of debris from houses smashed apart by Hurricane Dorian stretched Tuesday across the landscape of the Bahamas’ Great Abaco Island as the deadly storm left behind a paradise obliterated.

Dorian was still punishing northern parts of the Bahamas more than a day after landfall. The hurricane — now a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph — was crawling to the northwest, where it is expected to move along the east

coast of Florida and could possibly make landfall in the Carolinas later in the week. The storm’s death toll, which officials fear will rise sharply, stands at seven people, according to Prime Minister Hubert Minnis. On Great Abaco, high winds remained but

Love Your Block is an initiative of NYC Service in partnership with the Citizens Committee for New York City that provides a unique opportunity for neighborhood groups to transform and improve their communities through local action while leveraging city services. Residentled volunteer groups receive a grant of up to $1,000 and city services provided by the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Sanitation of New York and the Department of Environmental Protection to help improve their block. In addition to the grant and city services, groups receive project planning and community building assistance as well as support with local media coverage for the project. Post Office Named After Black Hero Ryan Keith Cox

hen a disgruntled employee opened fire at Virginia Beach municipal center on May 31, Ryan Keith Cox, an account clerk who had worked in the public utilities department for more than 12 years, was killed after saving several lives. Because of his heroics, Cox will have a post office named after him. The post office, which currently doesn’t have a name, will be called the Ryan Keith Cox Post Office Building. According to witnesses, Cox helped get his colleagues to safety during the shooting. “If it wasn’t for him, there would have been several more people that had perished,” city employee Christi Dewar told CNN affiliate WAVY shortly after the shooting. “He was a hero.” US Rep. He killed 12 people and send four more to the hospital. He died after a long gunfight with officers . Craddock fired indiscriminately as he went through all three floors of Building 2 and he also shot someone in the parking lot. At the time, the mass shooting was the deadliest in the US since November 2018.

Lawsuit Blocking T-Mobile/Sprint Megamerger Grows More Than Half of the U.S. Population Now Represented by States Involved in Lawsuit

EW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced that the State of Illinois has agreed to join the multistate lawsuit blocking the anticompetitive megamerger of telecommunications giants T-Mobile and Sprint, adding to the states’ momentum. “With Illinois’ addition to our lawsuit, more than half of the U.S. population is now represented by states that are suing to block the anticompetitive megamerger of T-Mobile and Sprint,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “We welcome Attorney General Raoul to our growing coalition that now includes 17 attorneys general, all who have opposed this merger because

As with the other litigating states, the merger of T-Mobile and Sprint would eliminate the benefits that intense competition has brought to Illinois residents

and the rest of the heartland. T-Mobile U.S. Inc. and Sprint Corporation are the third- and fourth-largest mobile wireless networks in the U.S. and are the lower-cost carriers among the “Big Four” — Verizon Wireless and AT&T round out the market. Intense competition, spurred in particular by T-Mobile and Sprint, has meant declining prices, increased coverage and better quality for all mobile phone subscribers. T-Mobile currently has more than 79 million subscribers and is a majority-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG. Sprint currently has more than 54 million subscribers and is a majority-owned subsidiary of SoftBank Group Corp.

Federal Court Rules Victims of 2015 Charleston Mass Shooting Can Sue U.S. Gov’t

federal court ruled that survivors and the relatives of victims of 2015’s massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, can sue the government for its failure in the firearms background check system. Nine black worshipers were killed in the mass shooting. Dylann Roof purchased a semiautomatic pistol from a licensed gun seller, but the agent who was charged with verifying his background failed to obtain a police report of a past drug-related infraction, which would have barred him from legally acquiring the weapon. Following the shooting, then-FBI Director James Comey admitted he should not have been permitted to purchase the gun. Roof was found guilty on 33 counts of federal hate crimes and sentenced to death in 2017. (Democracy Now!)

The ruin was immense; the area had been turned into what looked from above like a floating landfill. Shipping containers were tossed among the rubble. Brandon Clement, who was in a helicopter over the area, told CNN that even new homes constructed under more stringent building codes were destroyed by the storm. The Prime Minister told reporters after returning from an aerial tour of Great Abaco that he estimated there was damage to 60% of the homes there. According to a 2010 census, 17,224 people lived on the Abacos and there were about 5,200 occupied houses, apartments and townhomes with an additional 2,916 vacant units. Minnis said additional police and security forces will be sent to the Abacos on Wednesday morning to prevent violence or looting.

Neighbors rescuing neighbors On Grand Bahama Island, residents of Freeport were fervently working Tuesday to rescue people in communities where the havoc wreaked by Dorian was much worse than expected. With streets almost impassible due to high water and stranded vehicles and with pounding rain still falling and tropical storm force winds blowing, residents put together an ad hoc rescue group with boats and personal watercraft. The rescue efforts are dangerous and harrowing, according to a CNN crew that watched rescued Bahamians brought to a bridge half-covered by water that was being used as a staging point. The CNN crew tried to drive around Grand Bahama Island, but many streets are either flooded or are blocked by submerged cars. Dozens of people were going back and forth to help with the rescue. Some of the people rescued were utterly exhausted after spending all night clinging to their roofs or being stuck in their attics. One rescued man told CNN his wife drowned in front of him. Another man said he found his brother clinging to a tree and the brother’s wife was last seen grasping a piece of cardboard.

Storm slowly moving out Dorian inched away from the northern Bahamas after lingering over the islands for days, leaving catastrophic damage and people stranded in flooded buildings. Since it smashed into the Abaco Islands as a Category 5 storm on Sunday, it has knocked homes to the ground and flooded streets in the northern Bahamas. “Right now, (we’re) taking a beating,” Bahamian lawmaker Iram Lewis told CNN from Freeport late Tuesday morning. “We need wheelchairs, hospital beds, we need walkers.” “Whatever you can send, we’ll take it, because we are in trouble,” he said. Freeport resident Harold Williams said his son went out on a Jet Ski and heard people calling out. “Help! Help me, get out!” one said. Williams said they went to get stranded relatives who had to wade out to the watercraft in chest-deep water. “I don’t think we’ve seen anything like this in our lifetime. Total destruction,” Williams said.

Dorian — the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in the Bahamas — moved only 30 miles in 30 hours from Monday into Tuesday, mercilessly raking the same areas with destructive storm surge and winds. At 9 p.m. ET Tuesday, Dorian was heading slowly to the northwest at 6 mph. By the time the storm moves away, parts of the Bahamas will have received more than 30 inches of rain, forecasters said. The storm could make a US landfall on Thursday or Friday in North or South Carolina, CNN meteorologist Judson Jones said. People are trapped on their roofs, lawmaker says Lewis, the Bahamian lawmaker, told CNN that when he toured parts of Freeport on Tuesday morning, he saw a couple houses that had lost their roofs. “People standing outside, just stunned,” he said. “But we have more water damage than wind damage right

now. And even persons on high ground that need to be rescued, they’re trapped

on their roofs, in the attic space, and we cannot get to them.”

BOOK NOTES: Edwidge Danticat’s new book, “EVERYTHING INSIDE,” is a collection of short stories about life’s divine comedy and ironies, which skews mostly to female protagonists with ties to Haiti. Stories center on life in Haiti and its Diaspora, written with love and compassion by one of its most celebrated native daughters. It is poignant and insightful with stories about love, pain, the whole damn thing for Haitians through the Danticat memory lens. An excellent analyst, Bogle talks about “Do the Right Thing,” “Boys N’ The Hood,” the “Madea” franchise and “Moonlight.” And that’s just for openers. His first book, “Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies and Bucks,” is a classic which should be prominently displayed in homes and public libraries.

The NYC Department of Education policymakers need to pull a few pages from Professor Ibram X. Kendi’s book, “HOW TO BE ANTIRACIST,” includes numerous solutions to the disparities in education between white and nonwhite students. Book debuted at #4 on the 9/1 New York Times best-seller list. The fourth campus of the revered University of the West Indies (UWI) opens on September 16 in Antigua-Barbuda. Based in Antigua, the new UWI addition will be identified as the Five Islands Campus. Its first class will consist of 800 students, most of whom are registered in Levels 1 and 2 of the UWI programs. Antigua joins the three sister UWI campuses, located in Jamaica, Trinidad-Tobago and Barbados, and becomes a major Anglophone Caribbean education destination.

A Most Important Rock ■■

was sitting on my stoop last week. Three boys were walking down the block. As they approached me, I could hear their conversation. The taller of the three said, “Y’all see how the Amazon is burning?” The kid closest to the curb replied, “No, they ain’t. They just sent my mom her packages last night!” All three of the boys laughed and kept walking. Rarely do I ever discuss my day job in these columns. I do this purposely because writing, to me, is a necessary respite from reality. Writing is my safe space, my security blanket, my favorite old T-shirt. You don’t wear your favorite T-shirt to work, do you? However, that conversation between the three boys and the entire lack of concern for what has been happening in the Amazon Rain Forest has struck a chord that must be played out in words to inspire someone to play it out indeed. To some children in Brooklyn, saying that the Amazon Rain Forest is burning is as relevant as saying that there are acidic rainstorms on the planet Mercury. The Amazon Rain Forest seems a world away, the thread of attachment to their reality seemingly so minute that you cannot blame them for missing it. Full-grown adults miss it all of the time. Why does it matter that a rain forest 2,300 miles away is burning? To start, let’s discuss why the rain forests are important. The rain

forests are the lungs of our planet. They inhale the CO2 that exists in our atmosphere, and they exhale the oxygen that we need for a clean and healthy-living environment. To be exact, the Amazon Rain Forest contributes 20% of our planet’s oxygen by cycling out the planet’s CO2. There are other reasons though why the Amazon Rain Forest is so important to humanity. For example, of the 3,000 plants that the US National Cancer Institute has identified as being active cancer-fighting plants, 70% reside in the Amazon Rain Forest. Not to mention, the rain forest is home to an entire ecosystem. Tens of thousands of plant

and animal species live in the rain forest. You know what else lives in that rain forest? Humans. Hundreds of indigenous tribes call the rain forest home. It isn’t just a bunch of trees and rivers. It’s a home to many of this planet’s most precious plants, animals and humans. According to Greenpeace, the number one cause of deforestation in the Amazon Rain Forest is the cattle industry. Yes, the beef industry is killing the rain forests. You see, Brazil currently holds the largest commercial cattle herd in the whole world. They export beef to over 150 countries. When you include Brazil’s exports of poultry and pork, they

make about $15 billion a year in meat exports, making the country the fourth-largest exporter in the world. As the demand for beef in the world increases, sections of the Amazon Rain Forest are deforested to make room for cattle pastures. Greenpeace states that almost 80% of the current deforested areas in the Amazon are now used as pastures for the cattle industry. Climate change, the cattle industry and the outright audacity of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, who has rolled back environmental protections and is allowing loggers to set fires without punishment - these are the reasons for

the burning in the Amazon Rain Forest. The thread in this all is that human greed once again triumphs over the needs of the planet and over the needs of the humans of the planet. My job, or rather my vision, as the Executive Director of Magnolia Tree Earth Center is to be a beacon of environmental education in Bedford-Stuyvesant, not just about the environment though, but about our relationship to the Earth, the most important relationship we will ever have. We live on the Earth. Our food comes from the Earth. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the comfort we have is all due to the wondrous nature of this Earth. We must raise the next generation to be even more sensitive than we are regarding the fate of the third rock from the sun, so that they understand how fires in the Amazon affect their lives on Greene Avenue. We must support that our children see this world as a whole, a global society instead of being satisfied with repping their block or neighborhood. The knowledge that we are stronger when we consider one another with love will always win against the impassioned desire to make money at any cost. And that consideration will change the way we look at the world and our role in it. I mean, I love Ribeye steak, but is the beef industry really worth losing the lungs of the planet?

Every September, the Member States of the United Nations meet at the General Assembly in New York to discuss the critical issues of global concern. Global heating made Hurricane Dorian bigger, wetter – and more deadly ■■

he Bahamas, for those who live there, is simply a place to call home. For many Americans, it’s a dream vacation spot. But Hurricane Dorian turned that dream into a nightmare. And the worst part is this is only the beginning. Because unless we confront the climate crisis, warming will turn more and more of our fantastic landscapes, cities we call paradise and other dream destinations into nightmarish hellscapes. While the science has yet to come in on the specifics of just how much worse climate change made Dorian, we already know enough to say that warming worsened the damage. Because it’s not a coincidence that Dorian was one of the strongest landfalling storms ever recorded in the Atlantic, with the strongest sustained peak winds east of Florida, and the strongest ever to hit the Bahamas. This comes less than a year after Florida withstood the first landfalling category 5 hurricane in decades, on 5 October – the latest ever in the season for a storm that strong. On a basic physics level, we know that warm waters fuel hurricanes, and Dorian was strengthened by waters well above average temperatures. The fact that climate change has heated up our oceans means Dorian was stronger than it would have been

had we not spent the past 150 years dumping carbon pollution into the atmosphere. Sea surface temperatures were more than 1C warmer in the region where Dorian formed and strengthened than they were before we started burning fossil fuels. Empirically, there is a roughly 7% increase in maximum sustained wind speeds of the strongest storms for each 1C of warming. Since destructive potential is proportional to the third power of the wind speed, that corresponds to a 23% increase in potential wind damage. We saw that wind damage in the heartbreaking scenes of total devastation that have come in from the Bahamas. We know that the warmer air gets, the more moisture it can hold – and then turn into flooding rains in a storm like this. And we know that as climate change has melted glaciers and ice around the world, that water has gone into the oceans. The extra water, along with the expansion of water as it’s warmed, means that sea levels have been raised. That means when a storm like Dorian makes landfall, there’s more water for its storm surge, already bolstered by stronger winds, to push further inland. All that extra water makes hurricanes even more deadly, since it’s generally not the wind but the water that kills people. So although Dorian’s 220mph gusts were

incredibly dangerous (and sped up thanks to climate change), it was the 20-plus feet of storm surge and torrential rains that were the most destructive elements. two other ways that warming has probably worsened Dorian’s damage. One is that all that warm water allowed for the storm to ramp up quickly, undergoing what is known as rapid intensification as it exploded from a moderate category 2 to extreme category 5 over just two days. A recent study has shown that this is getting more common because of climate change, and indeed the past few years have seen many similar examples of this effect in action. Dorian was the fourth category 5 storm in just the last four years. So while climate change is making it so hurricanes can spin up quickly, it may also be slowing down how fast hurricanes move. Instead of moving across a coast and dissipating as normal, in recent years these storms are lingering longer in place, which means more flooding as the water piles up. For example, that’s exactly what we saw in Houston during Harvey, and in North Carolina during Florence. Had Dorian been moving at a regular pace of a few miles an hour, the devastation in the Bahamas would have been much less severe. But because it sat in place, basically

stationary, the damage has been catastrophic. Again, Dorian is far from unique in moving slowly, as a study last year found a 10% decrease in speed for storms like this globally, while a similar study found a 17% decrease along the east coast of the US. While neither of these studies directly tie that slowdown to climate change, the theory that climate change is changing the jet stream in ways that would lead to stalling storms (a phenomenon one of us has researched) is growing increasingly convincing. When all these factors combine in one storm, as it has for Dorian, it is truly a nightmare scenario – and a preview of the climate crisis to come. The only question is whether we have the foresight to address it. Michael Mann is distinguished professor of atmospheric science at Pennsylvania State University. Philip Henry Goldman, Jr. Feb. 4, 1934 - Aug. 28, 2019

hilip Henry Goldman, Jr., a treasured member of his Brooklyn community, departed to join his God and his ancestors on August 28, 2019. Born on February 4, 1934 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, he was the firstborn child of the late Phillip Goldman Sr. and Martha Jeffress Goldman. They were both originally from Philadelphia, but they agreed that Brooklyn was the place for them and moved here right after marrying. He was very close to his sister, the late Marcia Goldman, born just a year after him. Having joined Concord Baptist Church at age 10, Goldman became a member of its Sunday School Boy Scouts League. Among his childhood friends were Black Enterprise founder Earl Graves Sr. and the late political and cultural leader Sam Pinn. He and Marcia attended P.S. 26, which, at his request, will soon plant a magnolia tree in honor of his sister, the former valedictorian. Goldman later went on to Franklin K. Lane High School, where he was skipped a grade and where he met former Assemblyman and City Councilman Al Vann, who said of him, “I think of Phil as a Christian, a gentleman, a good human being; a very intelligent individual, who loved and honored his mother and sister.” Philip Goldman grew to be a caring warrior who used talent, strategy and a strong work ethic not only to advance his career and business interests, but also to benefit his community. He met challenges with the controlled energy and conviction that were prime tools in his arsenal of personal power. He was reportedly a graduate of New York University, earning a degree in electrical engineering. Later, after a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, Mr. Goldman returned home to enter a career in business. He rose from a consultant at Keystone Business Control to become a vice president. Later, as a marketing and licensing executive for Viacom Enterprises, he worked on securing the first

syndication rights for The Cosby Show in a $22-million-dollar deal. Co-owner of Walterios, a locally famous 70s disco club, Goldman also was a consultant for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and was best known for his various areas of public service over many years. He was County Committeeman for the 43rd Assembly District and president of the district’s New Frontier Democratic Club. As a member of The William M. Moss Brotherhood, Goldman helped to fulfill the organization’s commitment to creating education opportunities for young students and giving scholarships to high school graduates. He also served as a volunteer at his church’s clothing exchange for years. “He counselled the men and helped them select clothing,” said Mabel Robertson, director of the Concord Christhouse Clothing Exchange. “He was a gentleman, a most helpful, reliable and always punctual volunteer.” Leila Eugenie Haynes, a charter member and past president of the Brooklyn Kings County Lions Club, said, “Over the years, Lion Phil served his club on several committees, was president for two years and was also District 20-K1 Zone Chairperson, overseeing at least five Clubs. Along the way, Lion Phil acquired several distinguished-service awards, among them being

Phil Goldman the Melvin Jones Fellow – the highest award given to a member. He was a formidable leader whose services will be missed. May he rest in peace.” Goldman and his sister Marcia were also longtime supporters of the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford Stuyvesant and Phil was the only private funder of MTEC’s Project Green in 2018. Mr. Goldman is survived by his loving paternal aunt, Mrs. Thelma Steele, 104, a former Brooklynite, now in Decatur Georgia. He will be remembered with

Protect the Legacy uncovers lost stories of African American women in Tennessee

ulia Daniel said when she walked into the Beck Center on Friday, she didn’t know her family’s history would mean so much to the Protect the Legacy Project. “I’m here to share some history of women before the 1930s,” Daniel said. Protecting the Legacy is a statewide project put together by Chick History, Humanities Tennessee, Beck Cultural Exchange Center

and the East Tennessee Historical Society. Its goal is to collect untold stories of African American women who contributed to political and social movements prior to the 1930s.n American stories uncovered That objective is what led Daniel to bring in dozens of family photos, dating back to 1845 when her great, great grandmother was born. “She was a slave, Adaline Stapler Crozier, she was a slave and I wanted to share her history from slavery up until the present time,” Daniel said.

According to Daniel, Crozier would go on to have children, grandchildren, and decedents who would act politically. In order to fill in the blanks, project leaders are encouraging Tennesseans to explore their homes for old pictures, books, bibles, newspapers and artifacts that detail African-American women participating politically. The group is hoping to then digitize some of those items and share untold narratives. Rebecca Price is the president

Chick History is a women’s history non-profit she founded back in 2015 to preserve more women’s history. “It was the idea of telling women’s history better and how we really need to start doing that as a field and as practitioners of history,” she said. She said the Protecting the Legacy project is a chance to hear diverse narratives no one has ever heard. Beck Center President, Renee Kesler, said “I think for far too long

those stories have gone unheard.” “Those stories are as important if not more so as all of the stories of history and these are what I like to say, unintentional heroes.” Daniel agrees. She said opportunities like the Protecting the Legacy Project give people a chance to recognize some of those heroes. “We have the opportunity to write our history to make our history and to share our history, so we cannot blame anyone if we do not share our story,” she said.

he Bedford Stuyvesant Museum of African Art (BSMAA) will honor the 2016 Olympic medal winner, Ibtihaj Muhammad, at its Fifth Annual Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award Event on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the Brooklyn Museum. Ibtihaj Muhammad, who was a member of the 2016 Olympic fencing team, won the bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While she is best known for being the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the U.S. in the Olympics, Ms. Muhammad has become a powerful inspiration for young girls. “Ms. Muhammad is a brilliant athlete, entrepreneur and inspiration to girls who never saw themselves represented,” said Vira Jones, BSMAA’s Executive Director. “She has broken barriers to inspire the next generation of young women. We praise her for embracing what made her stand out as a unique role model -- being the

first American to compete in a hijab and the first African American and MuslimAmerican woman to win a bronze medal in fencing.” Jones also noted that the BSMAA Awards Selection Committee wanted to applaud Ms. Muhammad’s dignity, her honesty and her bravery for speaking out about the toxic team culture she documented in her compelling book, Proud: My Fight For An Unlikely American Dream. The following recipients will also be honored during the event: Former New York Mayor David Dinkins, New York City Council Majority Speaker, Laurie A. Cumbo, the African Union Ambassador to the U.S., Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, M.D., a medical doctor and activist. Response and Remedy to Centuries of American Terror: Struggle

n Sunday, September 15, from 3PM to 5PM the New York Chapter of the National Association of Kawaida Organizations (NAKO) in conjunction with the International African Arts Festival (IAAFestival) will host its community education forum to mark four historical events: 1. The 1619 arrivals of indentured Africans in Ft. Monroe/Jamestown, Virginia; 2. the 1919 Red Summer in which hundreds of African Americans were killed in white rioting and racist violence;

3. the launching of the Black Star Line by Marcus Mosiah Garvey that same year, and; 4. the 64th anniversary of the Emmett Till murder and trial (1955). The program, entitled, Response and Remedy to Centuries of American Terror: Struggle, will feature an Emmett Till film and special guest speaker Dr. Julius Garvey, the son of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The 1619 arrival of 20 Africans from Angola marks the beginning of African enslavement in the newly formed British colonies would soon transition from indentured

servitude of multiple peoples (Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans) to a system based and dependent solely on enslaved African labor. 1919 was named Red Summer because of the racist violence against African people trying to exert themselves as human beings and US citizens. It was this same year that the recently arrived Pan African Jamaican Marcus Garvey launched his Black Star shipping line. The newly form Bureau of Investigation (later the Federal Bureau of Investigation-FBI) under the leadership of

an obsessive young J. Edgar Hoover, who started and built his career on bringing down Garvey, would use two of the $5.00 shares Garvey sold to get the shipping company started to indict, convict and deport him. Report - Trump-DeVos Dept of Education: A Den of Thieves

ashington D.C. – On the eve of the public comment deadline for the Trump-DeVos Education Department’s proposal to loosen college accreditation standards, consumer advocacy group Allied Progress released a new report on how Secretary Betsy DeVos has filled her Department with former lobbyists and executives from the for-profit college industry — helping to explain what’s driving DeVos’ latest effort to sell out student borrowers. The Education Department has the important responsibility of overseeing college accrediting agencies to ensure that only colleges that offer a quality education have access to federal financial aid. But under the new DeVos proposal, standards and oversight would be rolled back to such a degree that virtually no college or accreditor would be left behind,

regardless of how poorly they operate or if they shortchange students. Education policy experts warn this proposal could lead to millions more students enrolling in low-quality colleges that won’t lead to good paying jobs, leaving taxpayers to pick up the tab when many of these student loans go into default. Here’s what the report shows: · Since the 2012 Election cycle, the for-profit education industry has spent $12.1 million on campaign contributions, with over $8 million going to Republican candidates. · Betsy DeVos has investments tied to Laureate Education, “a private for-profit college operator.” Laureate Education was the “largest for-profit college company on the planet” in 2017. DeVos also invested in Delta Educational Systems, which operates private for-profit colleges. · Principal Deputy Under

Secretary Diane Auer Jones, the Trump administration’s “top higher education official,” spent nearly five years lobbying for a for-profit college corporation that drew the fire of federal and state regulators for deceiving students. That corporation, Career Education Corporation, has faced “near constant scrutiny from accreditors and law enforcement entities,” including The Senate, FTC, SEC, And 22 Attorneys General for “misleading and deceptive recruiting tactics.” At ED, Auer Jones restored a previously rejected accreditor that “rubber-stamped” for-profit schools like the ones she lobbied for. · Chief FSA Enforcement Officer Julian Schmoke’s appointment was met with complaints: “Basically Akin To Nominating Influenza To Be The Surgeon General.”Schmoke was an Executive at DeVry University, a for-profit college that has settled allegations of deceptive tactics

with federal regulators. · Senior Counselor Robert Eitel, on “an unpaid leave of absence” from for-profit corporation Bridegepoint Education, played a role in dismantling the ED’s “Borrower Defense” regulation, something his most recent employer – a for-profit college company – lobbied on and saw as a threat to their business. · Institute Of Education Sciences Director Mark Schneideris in charge of the research informing the U.S. Department Of Education’s (ED’s) policies after previously consulting for-profit colleges. · Senior Counsel Brandon Sherman, one of DeVos’ top lawyers, previously provided legal services to numerous for-profit colleges. · Deputy General Counsel Jed Brintonpreviously worked for AmeriTech, a for-profit college.
