New office building is Getting spooky for the FOOGI 5K coming to Charles Street By Barbara Taormina ork has begun on a new four-story office building at 11 Charles St., the former home of Ryan Family Amusements. Cantella & Co., an independent broker and registered financial advisor, bought the property last summer for $3.9 million. The company, which was founded in 1952 in Boston’s Financial District, moved its headquarters and a team of 50 employees to a temporary location at 350 Main St. in May. Cantella plans to move into the top oor once the 80,000 square foot building is ďŹ nished sometime at the end of next year. The ground oor will be available for retail and restaurant uses while the second and third oors will be oďŹƒce space available for leasing.

“I am very pleased that a ďŹ nancial services ďŹ rm like Cantella & Co., Inc. has chosen to call Malden home, and even more thrilled that they have chosen to build an exceptional and unique building that will enhance the neighborhood and attract other businesses,â€?said Mayor Gary Christenson, who announced this week that work at the site is underway. Arrowstreet Architects of Boston used heavy timber to design the new building, which will feature wide column spacing and high ceilings throughout. The third try was the charm for the redevelopment of 11 Charles St. Back in October 2016, the Planning Board voted 6-3 to deny Wellesley-based EA Fish Development a special permit for a six-story building with 99

transportation, Malden Hospital and the ďŹ eld at Roosevelt Park, the revitalization of the Malden waterfront has been a campaign issue during this election cycle. Mayoral and City Council candidates all support increasing public access and use of the Malden River shoreline. Still, some have proposed dierent strategies for moving forward. The following information on the candidates’views on the riverfront is from their responses to questions from Maldenvotes.org, campaign websites, public forums and interviews with the candidates. Mayor Gary Christenson Christenson has said relocating the Public Works yard to make way for a public waterfront park is a problem because

there’s no other place to put it. Christenson is a member of Malden Works, which has partnered with planers from MIT to redesign the site to create safe public access. He supports amending zoning ordinances to create a riverfront overlay that would increase setbacks, a public pathway along the shoreline and requirements for property owners for landscaping, benches, signs and lighting. Candidate for Mayor – Ward 3 Councillor John Matheson Matheson has said he plans to work with state and local stakeholder to revitalize the waterfront. He supports pursuing state and federal funding to clean the water and creating waterfront pathways with benches, landscaping and a

boat launch. He also supports establishing public access to the river through the DPW yard and conducting a feasibility study for a public ferry to Boston Harbor. Councillor-at-Large Debbie DeMaria DeMaria feels the city needs to require waterfront property owners to take more responsibility of their shorelines. She supports the Malden River Greenway vision and feels an overlay would provide guidelines for what the community wants to see on the waterfront. She also feels the DPW facility should be moved to a less desirable location. Councillor-at-Large Craig Spadafora Spadafora has said he sup-

ports volunteer community cleanup on the river and has followed discussions to bring back certain species of plants on the shoreline. Councillor-at-Large Stephen Winslow Winslow has drafted a wetland bylaw that would strengthen the Conservation Commission’s oversight of the riverfront. He supports enacting a waterfront plan backed by city ordinances that would establish setbacks for public access. Councillor-at Large candidate Jerry Leone Leone supports creating public access to the waterfront with pathways and boardwalks. He also supports providing park-
