ummer! Whether you’re a fan of the weather this time of year or not... there ain’t a thing we can do about it. Hazy, hot and humid. Those are the words we will be using for the foreseeable future. As long as high pressure remains in the same position we are going to have winds out of the southwest generally which pumps in the heat and higher level of humidity. In these conditions it’s impor tant to remember

to stay hydrated. With the temps getting into the 90s and dew points in the 70s, there is a higher concentration of ozone which could lead to it being hard to breath for some. If you’re working outside, take cover in shade periodically. Also if you’re a pet owner make sure you’re keeping them off of blacktop. It can heat to close 175° within just a couple hours. Skin destruction can start within 60 seconds. The holiday weekend will be OK, just watch out for scattered showers and storms, best chance is on Saturday. Upper 80s to around 90, a tad cooler Sunday.

Dog days of summer and all year round Letter from the editor

hat a time to be alive for a dog. Most of these beloved family pets are living in Heaven on Earth. When I was a kid, a dog was a dog and the pups of the family were considered lucky if they ever even entered the house. My first dog, Rusty, was tied to a tree adjacent to his nice dog house where he resided most of the time. That was the way the average family dog lived in the 1970s. Our first indoor dog, Tonya, joined our family in the 1980s. She definitely lived a more pampered lifestyle than Rusty. Tonya was welcomed in the house, permitted she stayed on the floor. Our German Shepherd, Ashley, stole my father's heart in the 1990s and got away with more than Tonya or Rusty ever did. 30 years later, dogs these days

are living in doggy paradise. My mother's dog, Itty-Bit, has a more expansive wardrobe than I do, complete with a raincoat and nightgown! Bob and I have three dogs of our own. No one loves me like my dogs do. My canine trio follows me everywhere, vying for my attention, and always eager to play. Every day, my pups greet me with pure joy that only a dog has the ability to exude. Some say I spoil my dogs. Everyday, I take them swimming in our pool. It's the highlight of their day as they race to plunge into the water after a tennis ball. All of their favorite treats and all natural dog food, with

no preservatives, are home delivered. A couple times per week, they go to the lake or park. They have also become regulars over the years at "dog beach." As our busy days come to an end, each of my babies have their own special spot on my couch. As much as I spoil my pups, others put me to shame. Have you seen the new strollers or doggie carts that people are pushing their pups around in? Doggy fashion is at an all time high as more and more dogs are sporting scarves, sweaters, and more. Handmade gourmet treats, spa-like grooming treatment, Pupuccinos, and trips to doggy bakeries are just a few of the ways our dogs are living their best lives. Recently I saw on the news that some cities even have doggie food trucks, just in case pooch has a craving for an ice cream! Okay, that one takes it a little too far for me. I am happy to see the shift and I truly believe we are just scratching the surface of how helpful dogs can

be. Veterans, those with illnesses and disabilities, along with those suffering from loneliness experience an abundance of benefits from their true blues. When my grandmother passed, I witnessed the deepest sadness I had ever seen in my mother. She lacked purpose and joy until she rescued a dog to keep her company. Itty-Bit, my mother's beloved pup, changed her life. She may have rescued Itty-Bit but the truth is, Itty-Bit also rescued my mother. The unconditional love and loyalty that Itty-Bit gave my mom offered her a reason to keep going and a reason to keep moving. Now in her 80s, mom takes her precious Itty-Bit for a daily walk knowing that her dog is counting on her to show up. Our dogs are our best friends. More and more people with autism, PTSD, anxiety and so much more are reaping the rewards of the unconditional love of a dog. We may give our dogs more than ever before but they continue to do the same for us.

A message of freedom for the powerful women of the Jersey Shore

s we celebrate freedom this week, I wanted to talk about a different kind of freedom: that of the mind. Specifically, as it relates to societal standards and our worth. Blinded by my own set of circumstances as a child and young adult, I used to think that only overweight girls like myself could understand what it felt like to feel less than enough. I often envied thinner, fitter women. I thought that if I was just skinny, then I could truly be happy because thin girls must know what "enoughness" feels like. Through my blogging and coaching years, I met countless women of all sizes that had deeply rooted struggles with their self image. With each story, I began to see a trend: 9 women out of 10 that I interacted with were

unhappy with their self image. I made it my life mission to do what I could to empower myself and the women around me to rewire the way they thought about themselves. I declared that I wouldn't let myself or any of my beautiful friends and family feel like they were anything less than the beautifully and wonderfully made goddesses that they are. I maintained that vow to myself for several years until I lost my own grip

on it. It started slowly. One day I found myself crying out to my husband how "fat I was" and as I heard myself say it, I wanted to stop myself but the words kept coming. Nobody was there to say "Whoa, we don't talk like that, Krystle." Before I knew it, I was back to having conversations about diets and weight in front of my daughter, something I vowed to never do. The slope was slippery and I was sloppily skiing my way down to the demise of my worth. Re cent l y, the spark was relit through conver s at ions with people that I love. Women who I love and respect so deeply have been saying things about themselves and their bodies that I wouldn't imagine saying to them in a million years. And all I can think is "I wish you could see how beautiful you are through my lens." It was in these moments that I realized I had been chained by these same proverbial shackles in my own mind yet again. Society, in all of its strength and power, has groomed us to believe that we need fixing. We are subtly brain-washed into believing that we need to be more, that we aren't pretty or fit or flawless enough.

Offering us "solutions" to cosmetic "problems" around every corner, the beauty industry has trapped us into believing that we can never add up. If we aren't careful, if we don't work daily to fight back against the power of society and its unrealistic standards, we fall victim to the trap of never feeling worthy. Freedom of the mind is an active and daily choice. The decision to rewire how we have been groomed to think about ourselves is one that must be made regularly. The chains that society has put on us that have declared our worth to be found in our outward appearance, are strong and mighty. But we are stronger and mightier. Your mind is a powerful weapon that can be used for good. Your body, your face, your perfectly laid hair or makeup does not determine your worth and the value that you bring to this world. It's time to stop allowing social stigmas to tell us otherwise and start living in our own truths - free to be whomever we choose to be. Set yourself free, beautiful. Atlantic County Area Restaurants Host Special Events to Promote HEROtini Mocktails

s the calendar turns to July, it seems summer isn’t the only thing heating up at the Jersey Shore. The competition between Atlantic County restaurants and bars is building, with participants vying to win the HERO Campaign’s summer-long contest: The HEROtini Challenge. To earn donated votes, local establishments are planning a variety of events to help promote their mocktail, and secure the highly coveted, HEROtini Cup. Launched by the HERO Campaign over Memorial Day Weekend, the HEROtini Challenge is a summer-long contest between thirty-one Atlantic County restaurants and bars, challenging each to create the best “mocktail” in celebration of designated drivers. With creative names such as “Homerun Harper” (The Anchorage), “Your Alibi” (Ducktown Tavern), “The Spicy Mock-Arita” (Maynard’s), and “Baby Shark-atini” (Resorts), the contest is part of an on-going effort to promote the role of designated drivers, and the message of safe and sober driving with a positive, proactive approach so often associated with the HERO Campaign. This effort is one of many initiatives

started by HERO Campaign founders, Bill and Muriel Elliott, in memory of their son, Navy Ensign John R. Elliott, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2000. “The HEROtini Mocktail Challenge is a fun way to make a serious point about

If a recent affair at Tomatoes is any indication, HEROtini tasting events are a fun and effective way to engage patrons in trying a HEROtini, and raising some funds toward their votes. In June, Tomatoes was joined by their sponsor, Matt and Tom Reynolds (CRA Financial) in hosting a celebrity bartending event, the results of which earned close to $1500 in votes, a total the owners of CRA financial committed to matching, for a donated vote total of over $3000. Given their success, other establishments have also scheduled events to fundraise for their HEROtini. On Friday, July 12th, Gregory’s of Somers Point will host a “HEROtini Backyard Bash” with sponsor and Clay’s Climate Control owner, Clay Pierce. The event will run from 6-10pm, and all donations will go towards Gregory’s HEROtini, The SafeTea Driver. cean City will celebrate the 65th anniversary of Night in Venice on July 13, and entries are currently being accepted from all those who want to participate in the annual bayfront celebration. The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contests provide a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bayfront, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. The parade includes a lineup of stars who will perform shows and greet fans throughout the weekend. Special guests will include the legendary Chubby Checker, Kate Flannery from NBC’s “The Office,” and Caissie Levy, star of the Broadway production of “Frozen.” Former Philadelphia Eagle star Freddie Mitchell also will be part of the parade. The optional theme of “Celebrate: 65 Years of Night in Venice,” a chance to reminisce about favorite memories and themes from Night in Venice history.

Guide to Night in Venice 2019

When is Night in Venice? The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2019. Where does the parade route begin and end? The boat parade begins near the Ocean City-Longport toll bridge and travels along the bayside to Tennessee Avenue, looping in and out of lagoons along the way. Where can I watch the parade? To view the Night In Venice boat parade, grandstands will be set up at street

ends along the bay from Battersea Road to 16th Street and also at Tennessee Avenue. These are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Streets include: Battersea Rd., North Street, First Street, Second Street Marina, Fourth Street, Sixth Street, 11th Street, 13th Street, 15th Street, 16th Street and Tennessee Avenue. Tickets are also on sale to view Night in Venice from the Bayside Center (520 Bay Avenue), which will be open with a picnic area, snack food for sale and bleacher seating plus entertainment. Tickets are $4 for children (12-and-under) and $8 for adults. A DJ will play music from 4:30 p.m. until the first boats in the parade arrive. Children’s activities include crafts, games and face-painting. The band will resume after the parade until the fireworks begin at 9 p.m. Tickets are available at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice. What does it cost? The parade is free to watch at all locations except the Bayside Center. Where can I park? Free parking and shuttle service will run starting at 4 p.m. Parking will be available at: ●● Ocean City Municipal Airport: 25th Street and Bay Avenue ●● Soccer Field at Tennessee Avenue: Off Shelter Road ●● Ocean City Community Center: 1735 Simpson Avenue Shuttles will drop off spectators at street ends where they can watch the parade and return them to the parking lots afterward. The shuttle also drops off at the Bayside Center. The service is free and will be available until 10 p.m. Can I watch from the Ninth Street Bridge? All pedestrians and bicyclists should use the Shared Use Bike Path and stay to the south side shoulder for viewing. No persons will be allowed to bring chairs for seating onto the bridge. At no time will persons block the free movement of the Shared Use Bike Path. When and where are the fireworks? Night in Venice will include a fireworks display launched after the parade from a barge in the bay north of the Ninth Street Bridge, roughly off Third Street. The display should be best viewed from street ends or the bayfront between the Ocean City-Longport toll bridge and 16th Street. How do I participate? Somers Point Duke O’Fluke fishes distressed swimmers out of water

he Duke O’Fluke got more than fish out of the water on Sunday. When the captain and first mate of the Somers Point-based boat saw two people struggling in

the rip current off Egg Harbor Township, they helped fish them out of the water, police said. Andrew and Joshua Vanhoy, ages 35 and 38, were in the water at Malibu Beach — better known as Dog Beach — when they started getting pulled away from shore and under the Ocean City Bridge, township Lt. Michael Finnerty said. As rescuers including Longport police and lifeguards, Egg Harbor

from the scene. Township police later found out that Duke O’Fluke Capt. Lee Scanny, 63, of Linwood, and Fist Mate Jake Delarso, 27, of Somers Point, were the silent saviors. The two saw people waving frantically from the rocks at Klingert Fishing Pier, which drew their attention to the two victims in the water, Finnerty said. Scanny navigated to the swimmers and deployed life rings along with life jackets. Scanny, Delarso and a few additional passengers then assisted the victims to shallow water.

appy Birthday AMERICA…!!! It’s hard to believe that we’re in July already, but I certainly hope this column finds you enjoying all the sun & fun the Jersey Shore has to offer. Since I last wrote, the Sixers have completely revamped their roster. The Phillies continue to frustrate me and others. The Flyers prospects make a visit to the beach. The Eagles are less than three weeks away from training camp. The Atlantic City Blackjacks pull off a MUST win, and I have a touching story from the world golf. From the entertainment world, if you like the Beatles, there’s a fun movie just out that imagines if the Fab Four never existed. Also, by the time you read this, “Stranger Things” season 3 will have dropped on Netflix as I know I’ll be returning to the fic-

tional town of Hawkins…will you…? As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: ●● NBA free agency was different this year as it began at 6 p.m. rather than with a flurry of midnight deals. For the Sixers, the first big “bomb” was when J.J. Reddick decided to take a deal with New Orleans rather than stay with Philly. This was a big surprise to many, myself included. This could be a MAJOR blow if the Sixers can’t find a sharpshooter to replace JJ’s 240 made three-pointers last season, a franchise record. ●● The next domino to fall was Tobias Harris as he chose to stay with the Sixers for a five-year, $180 million dollar deal. Harris has been quoted as saying he “finally has a home”, and it’s with the Sixers. He’s an established NBA forward and a fringe all-star. Let’s hope he blows up into a legitimate star. ●● The Sixers were able to re-sign fan favorite and reserve power forward Mike Scott too, but the Jimmy Butler question got an-

swered when the news broke that Al Horford would be coming to Philadelphia. Four years, $97 million, with championship bonuses that could push things up to $109 million, some

fans are wondering why Horford and not Butler? Fair question. I’ll just say this, Horford is a proven NBA defender who’s capable of playing forward or some center if Joel Embiid is out. Jimmy Butler made a lot of clutch baskets last season, but it speaks VOLUMES to me that he’s now joining his fourth team in FOUR seasons. How’s that old saying go? “There’s no “I” in team…!” On to the Phillies, as they managed to salvage at least one win last weekend in Miami. I cannot believe that Gabe Kapler’s club continues to struggle with a team that’s the worst in the entire National League…! J.T. Realmuto is the Phillies lone all-star, and I think that’s about right. The Phillies continue to struggle, but maybe the upcoming All-Star break will help them recharge.

From hockey, the Flyers prospects were once again at the shore as they took part in training & autograph sessions in Stone Harbor & Avalon last week. This is always a neat way for them to wrap up their development camp as fans can get up close and personal with the NHL’ers of the future. Good luck to former Flyers coach Dave Hakstol on his new gig with the Toronto Maple Leafs. “Hak” will be an assistant up there. Perhaps he’ll have more success in that role. The Eagles open training camp on Wednesday July 24th at the NovaCare Complex. I’ve already grumbled about this, but if you want to see them, their one OPEN practice is on Sunday August 4th at Lincoln Financial Field. You need a ticket and for the first time, there is a fee. Of course, you could keep that $10 and go see the AC Blackjacks as they saved their season with a road win at Washington last week. The first road win of the season

I strongly encourage you to check out this team as they return home to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night July 6th against the Philadelphia Soul. Finally, two items from golf. First, my thanks to the folks at the Shore Club for inviting me down to see their changes. The old Wildwood Country Club is now “The Shore Club” and it’s a real gem if you’re looking for a private club with reasonable prices in Cape May Count y. Arnold Palmer used to play the course when he was in recruit training in Cape May, so it has some history. It also now has a family friendly atmosphere and a renovated clubhouse. Definitely worth checking out. My second golf item is about Nate Lashley, who won the Rocket Mortgage Classic on the PGA Tour last week in Detroit. To most folks, they’d say “Nate who…?” But I have a connection to this young man. He was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and raised in nearby Mitchell. I mostly covered his sister Brooke when I worked for KDUH-TV ABC 4 from 1994-1998, but their story becomes more poignant when you learn that Nate &

Brooke lost their parents in a small plane crash in 2004. Nate’s high school sweetheart Leslie died in that crash too as his father was piloting the small plane back from watching Nate compete in NCAA golf. Pretty awesome to see Nate secure his professional future with a huge win in Detroit. Entertainment now, and can you imagine a world without the Beatles…? That’s what the new “romcom” movie “Yesterday” attempts to pull off as Himesh Patel plays the lead character who is struck by a bus and wakes up as the only person who knows the words & lyrics to all those great songs. I won’t spoil the plot, but there’s a neat twist near the end that is

sure to make you smile. I give it three out of four “PT’s”, as I’ve also just d e ci d e d to create my own “PT” rating system…! ●● L a s t l y , “Stranger Things” drops season 3 on Netflix on July 4th. If you haven’t seen this series and you remember being a kid in the 80’s, you must check it out. Fireworks and the Upside Down, I know I’ll be watching…! Recommended Books for Kids By Marci Lutsky

ast week I told you what I recommend you read this summer at the beach (finished Ask Again, Yes and loved it!) so I thought it would be fun this week to talk about great books for kids. My twins are 8 so that’s the level we are at right now. My son and daughter have very different interests in books but I often find them reading each other’s books. If you haven’t been to the library in awhile, dust off the old card and take your kids to fill up a reusable bag with books every couple of weeks this summer. Last summer my son was all about reading Dog Man and Captain Underpants. While I was grateful that he was reading independently, I was hoping for him to become interested in books with more depth. He read the book House of Robots by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein for a school book report and it was such

a fantastic choice for him. The book touches on a lot of important topics relevant to young readers and kept his interest. He has sailed through the remaining books in the series and has a new favorite author. He has also enjoyed the Roald Dahl books (the box set was an excellent birthday gift he received) and for book series, he loves Lucy & Andy Neaderthal, Bad Guys, My Weird School and I Survived. My daughter loves to read and can frequently be found with her nose buried in a book. On a whim she picked up Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger and devoured the series. There are seven books in the series with an eighth due out in November. She has talked endlessly about the storyline for the past few months so I am reading the first book now. She has also enjoyed The Tail of Emily Windsnap, another fantasy fiction series. Other series

favorites for her have been Dory Fantasmagory, Whatever After, Judy Moody and 13-Story Treehouse. It’s

so nice when kids like a book in a series because then they continue on to other books already familiar with the characters. While you are at the library, make sure to check out what kinds of programs they offer. At the Otto Bruyns Public

Library of Northfield, kids can sign up to receive a passport reading log to track their books and win prizes. The Ocean City Free Public Library is one of our favorite libraries and always offers fun (and free) programs for kids. Whether you have a voracious reader or a kid needing a little extra push to pick up a book, make trips to the library part of your regular routine this summer. You will escape the summer heat for an hour or two while discovering new and fun reads for the kids and maybe for you too! Hidden Gems of South Jersey—Houseguests

iving so close to the beach, one is always hosting houseguests. This past weekend, my college friends who haven’t been to the Jersey Shore in 26 years, came to visit. Much has changed since they stood by my side, as I became one with my groom. Since then, we’ve all been seasoned by the successes and disappointments of life—and a few devastating losses. This year I needed some refreshing. We all agreed it’s been way too long. For some, the thought of houseguests brings a feeling of dread and inconvenience. Yes, there are more towels and bedding to wash, maybe a little extra cleaning. (In my case a lot). But there’s something about allowing someone into your home that is very intimate. Perhaps that’s why some want to avoid it. When you allow someone behind your closed doors, it gets real. No more secrets. They see your crazy kids in their natural state, your naughty dog that steals their stuff,

and your dirty laundry is exposed. But when you let your real friends in, none of that matters. True friends who are part of your history know your past, remember you in your foolish youth, and love you anyway. Those are the kind of friends that I want entering my home, and those are the friends that came this weekend. We were able to stay up late laughing about old boyfriends, shared experiences, and lives with twists and turns we never could have imagined. This deep time together wouldn’t have been as rich if they hadn’t stayed overnight. Of course, taking time off from your busy schedule, with your feet in the sand while waves are crashing nearby isn’t so bad either. Many productive discussions can occur from the comfort of your beach chair. So embrace the opportunity of hosting houseguests. It provides special time to know your friends on a deeper level. Like a hidden gem, it’s value might not be realized at first. But if you have true friends, with whom you can be vulnerable, you are blessed and very rich indeed. Linwood police dog protected by memory of Mizpah firefighter

Mizpah firefighter killed on her way to a call Christmas morning will continue her rescue work thanks to a donation by her family. Natalie Dempsey had just turned 21 earlier that month when she died in the Dec. 25 crash. Her fire company, where she was vice president, lovingly referred to her as “Baby Girl.” The loss has been deep for those who loved her, but

her family is making sure to honor her by supporting the things that meant most to her.

Dempsey’s dream was to become a K-9 of f icer, her mother, Stacey, Dempsey, told

BreakingAC. She had applied in Wildwood and Cape May and was waiting for the next steps after completing her fitness test. Now, a donation her family made to Protecting K-9 Heroes allowed K-9 dog Kaos to have a ballistic vest. A patch on the vest states that Kaos is “PROTECTED BY NATALIE DEMPSEY,” Linwood police said. Natalie Dempsey’s love of animals was evident. She worked as a supervisor at the Atlantic County Humane Society, so her family raises donations to help them as well. “Natalie was truly amazing,” her mother s a i d , “a n d had a heart for giving to others.”

Tips for a Healthy Vacation

ime for a vacation! The apprehension of staying on your healthy eating plan can put a damper on traveling. Does taking a vacation lead you to take a break from healthy eating ? If travel (pleasure or business) puts you in a downward tailspin from your at-home menu, you might want to create a travel-day food itinerary. With some simple planning and strategy, you can hop off the plane feeling refreshed and ready for anything! There’s nothing like a great vacation or successful business trip—except when you return home feeling sluggish and bloated from overeating .Choosing healthy foods on-the-go doesn’t have to be impossible, though. Even if you’re seriously strained for time and you absolutely can’t resist the airport restaurants, staying hydrated will do absolute wonders for your travel day. Though often over-priced, H2O is accessible everywhere (if you’re truly strapped for cash, go for the water fountains -- no excuses). Drinking water will help with many of the obstacles that often arise

throughout your travels. It can enhance your mood (a sense of humor is important when your flight is delayed), prevent headaches, aid in digestion and help with appetite control. I try to drink at least a cup of water for every hour I am flying, as well as increase my water intake pre/post flight. Herbal teas are another way to get those fluids in. If you’re prone to upset stomachs or indigestion while flying, ginger or chamomile are great solutions. Guess what! Commercial airplanes have very low humidity leading to dehydration . We feel most comfortable when the humidity is around 50 percent -- air in the cabin can fall to as low as 3 percent on long flights. Don't ruin your diet before you even take off! Avoid the french fries and candy bars, and opt for one of these sub 150-calorie suggestions available in most airports. Nuts have 150 calories and are loaded with fiber to fill you up. The B vitamins are great for stress, and they take a long time to eat. Omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts keep your stress hormones and adrenaline in check in those high-stress, high blood pressure, high turbulence moments. Dried fruit supplies antioxidants to protect cells from the stress effect of a flight delay and provides fiber for digestion. A small apple saves the day at around 80 calories and a potassium filled small banana comes is about 75 calories. Add the fruit to oatmeal! Individual packages can be easily mixed with hot water at the airport or in-flight

for a filling high-fiber fix. (But do try to avoid brands with high sugar content.) Starbucks has one that's exactly 150 calories! With the airlines cutting out inflight meals, preparing and bringing your own sky-ready food has become an art form. (Ignore the questionable looks from the TSA agent when he sees your Ziploc bag of protein powder. Protein powders can be mixed with juice or cold water. A great tip, liquid protein was more effective than carbs or fat in suppressing nausea and symptoms of motion sickness. When I travel I like to pack my own snacks or healthy favorite. Try to plan to cook, even if just a few meals while you are on vacation. Try local foods, or research restaurants in advance. This way you go in with a plan and will not be thrown off by delicious smells and sights . Don't indulge at every single meal. Important: Stay hydrated. Be intentional about treats. And please don’t stress—just get back on track. Party with a purpose! Remember, the body you take on vacation is the same as you are coming home with. Welcome to the Tropics!

Creating a getaway in your own backyard garden.

hen you live in an area as nice as ours, a staycation doesn’t sound so bad. But if you long for the tropics, they might be as close as your own backyard. Now that summer weather has finally arrived, we need to shake off the blues of our rainy spring. Tropical plants will feel very at-home in our warmer summer temperatures and will reciprocate our hospitality by livening up our spirits. Hibiscus- -with their bright orange, yellow, and red flowers--instantly add a tropical

feel to your backyard. They thrive in bright sun and, as an added bonus, will attract hummingbirds to your garden. Friends of mine overwinter their hibiscus in a sunny window indoors, and even get some blooms in the winter. You can also plant hardy hibiscus that blooms in late summer and can withstand our winter freezes. Mine are a deep burgundy and are late to emerge (sometimes as late as June). Every year I wonder if they have survived, but they are a welcome treat when they finally reveal themselves and open their large flowers. When I took my daughter to Southern California for college, it was surprising to see the Bird of Paradise plant

ever y where— even gas stations and grocery stores had them in their parking lots. Grow them yourself this summer for a truly exotic-looking plant that will add loads of interest to your backyard haven. Cannas also have a tropical look with color ful leaves resembling banana plants with v ib r a n t red, orange, and yellow flowers to match. They are only winter hardy to zone 8, so may not survive our freezing temperatures; but their rhizomes can be dug up before first frost and saved for replanting in spring. Mandevilla, dipladenia, and bougainvillea would make beautiful additions to the garden and are worth the splurge, though they can only be grown as annuals in our gardening zone. and place them in a sunny window to grow as a houseplant. Add lushness to your tropical garden with various sizes and shapes of foliage. Elephant ears, the common name for many varieties of plants known for their large heartshaped leaves, make a big impact in the garden. They prefer filtered light or partial shade. Caladiums are part of this family with their colorful white, green, and red/pink foliage. Philodendrons are also a type of elephant ear and lend a jungle feel to the garden with their large glossy green

leaves. Both caladium and philodendrons are commonly grown as indoor plants. Tropical gardens should be densely planted. Fill in any gaps in the garden with different types of ferns which multiply easily and freely offer that lush, peaceful vibe. Also, add potted palms to your backyard and porch for added lushness. Add a water feature such as a fountain or pond. The sound of flowing water is a soothing way to drown the cares of the day. Add water lilies to a pond for additional exotic beauty. Grill some pineapples, add a little umbrella to your favorite summer drink and smile as you think of all the money you saved on hotels and airfare. Media is in a rush to influence 2020; Yet, we have very Important Races in 2019 for Senate, Assembly & County Executive

recent survey yielded that most Americans actually believe that the election for President of the United States is this November, 2019. It's not until 2020. That's because we have such a blatantly dishonest media, which was determined to stop a Donald Trump Presidency and now they want to short-circuit it altogether by starting the campaign ridiculously early. Despite the fact that the race for President in 2020 is already under way, way too early, the races for 2019 will catch political/ electoral fire very soon. And, there are some very important contests that are actually taking place this year. In New Jersey's District 1, there is a key state senate race between the appointed incumbent Senator Bob Andrzejczak and Cumberland County Republican Party Chairman Michael Testa, Jr., Esquire. Both are fine men. Both are supreme gentlemen. That being said, both are highly competitive individuals who want the seat. To date, Testa leads the fundraising "beauty contest." Testa is a credible, legitimate challenger, who gives the Republicans their best chance to win this seat since former Senator Nick Asselta.

This is a race between two candidates from electoral central casting. Andrzejczak is a bona fide American hero, who nearly died 7 times on the battlefield of war serving our country. He's a good, decent and compassionate man with a soft heart, who is also tough as nails at the same time. Regarding Testa, they don't come any tougher, along with his own delicate polish and style. No doubt, Testa is the more aggressive candidate. He wants to debate any and everywhere. Andrzejczak is not looking to debate Testa. It's not his strong suit. He's an accomplished and talented legislator. He's simply not a great orator. Testa is an accomplished orator. He's a talented attorney. He speaks for a living. And, he speaks very well. Both have a command of the important core state issues. Andrzejczak is a member of the Democratic Party, however, he has amassed a near Republican-like voting record. As a long-time member of what's known as The Van Drew Team, Andrzejczak has consistently voted more conservatively versus the radical Democrat agenda in New Jersey; which has introduced new levels of Democrat-Socialism in the Governor Phil Murphy era. Testa would record a decisive mandate victory over any liberal Democratic candidate in this right-of-center District 1. However, "The Van Drew Team" has carefully and successfully achieved a voting balance and overall philosophy of governance that has made it impossible to date for any Republican to win during the now United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew era. standpoint. Under any "normal" circumstances, New Jersey's District 1 is and would be, a strong Republican District. You have to give Van Drew credit for his achievements. Not only does Van Drew always win, but, each and every candidate he has selected for the Assembly and once now (Andrezjczak fo the Senate) has won each and every time. This will be the greatest test, yet. Van Drew is now in Washington - in fairness without cheating the District in any way. This upcoming first Tuesday, November, 2019 will tell the tale; Can the Van Drew magic continue with him now holding federal elective office? Will District 1 voters view things differently? Will Van Drew's "long coattails" be able to continue in a changed environment? There is also a highly competitive race in District 2 for two open seats for the New Jersey General Assembly. Incumbent Democrats Vince Mazzeo and John Armato will face Atlantic County Freeholder John Risley and former Brigantine Mayor Phil Guenther. Mazzeo and Armato have a terrible and indefensible voting record. They've voted for massive tax and fee increases. They've supported making New Jersey a Sanctuary state. They voted to take funding from our Veterans and provide it to illegals. They failed in having the funds restored in the current budget cycle. They even voted to tax rain. Mazzeo also supported legalizing casino gaming in North Jersey. This alone should have resulted in Mazzeo being served with his termination

papers two years ago. Only in our present times of living in electoral "Bizarro World" would they even stand any chance of being re-elected. This election will thoroughly test whether or not my theory of suspension of belief really does exist. By strict definition, suspension of belief means that their is a "willingness to suspend ones critical faculties and believe something surreal; sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment." In other words, sometimes people knowingly vote against their own self interests. This best describes Mazzeo's success as an elected official. During his career, he has consistently voted against the best interests of the resident taxpayers. Yet, he has somehow enjoyed electoral success. I know that this exists. I just haven't figured out why? America voted for Barack Obama twice. His policies led to no economic growth; no jobs; a weakened military; divided Americans by race, age, orientation, wealth status; destroyed health care; loss of prestige around the world just to name a few major failures. Yet, voters elected and then re-elected him. Obama's record was so bad that he adopted a big lie that this was our "new normal," the best we could do. He proclaimed that manufacturing had left America for good. That 3 percent GDP could no longer be achieved. He challenged President Trump's assertions to the contrary and said, "what does Trump have a magic wand?" Of course, President Trump has proven

that Obama lied to all of us. Under President Trump, we have achieved the lowest unemployment in American history, along with record financial markets, and, a return of manufacturing and 3-4% GDP every quarter. Having detailed all of these undisputed facts; incredulously, you still can't count Mazzeo out. First, I refer you back to the cognitive dissonance, suspension of belief construct. Never sell this bizarre concept short. It's real. Second, millions of dollars will effortlessly flow-in for Mazzeo to use in an attempt to deceive the voters one more time. District 2 Republicans are very fortunate that Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson is on the ballot this year. He is the most prolific vote recipient in Atlantic County history. The ticket will need him this year. Levinson is facing a minimal challenge from local attorney Susan Korngut, a Northfield City Councilwoman. Korngut arrived on the scene by making one of the most bizarre nominating acceptance speeches in Atlantic County history. While standing before those assembled at the Atlantic County Democratic Convention, Korngut told about her childhood and the African-American maid who cared for her. I'll spare you the details, but, several inattendance have conveyed to me that they found this to be surprising in nature. Korngut has also cast several unpopular recent votes on Northfield City Council, including voting against the hiring of an addi-

tional police officer; despite the fact that there was a bi-partisan consensus that the position was needed to protect the public. Despite the media's rush to influence who will be the next President of the United States, there will be a number of key races at the county and state levels that are significant in your daily lives. The Judge & The Victim: A Story of Offended Humans By Christina Sciarretta

h. my. Goodness, do I offend easily. Seriously. I am 33 years old and I am just realizing how offended I have lived my entire life. Let me say this first: every time I find a flaw, it’s pure magic to me. You see, I am the one thing that I actually have control over and when I find that I have been doing something wrong my entire life (as I so often do), I leap for joy, knowing that now that I’ve identified what I suck at and can “grow forth” (a combo of move forward and grow.) So anyway, back to how offended I am… If you catch me on the right day, you could ask me a simple question in an ever-so-slightly off tone, and it’ll send me into a tailspin. No, I won’t flip

out. That’s not how I roll. Internally, though, I will tell myself a New York Times Bestseller-worthy story about the meaning behind your tone, which will then replay over and over in my mind, causing me to form an opinion about you that is negative and then… you know the drill. And the reason that you know the drill, is that you most likely do it too. It’s a human behavior. We tell ourselves stories about everything! I recently read an interesting book called The Four Agreements, which so perfectly articulated that many of the stories in our minds are formed through the lens of either The Judge or The Victim. We are conditioned to make judgements about everything, based on what we have been taught through our own life experiences. Much of what we have been taught comes from our parents, but society and our inner circle of friends and family also play a large part in forming those judgements or offenses. Think about this story: Jack goes to work and loses his biggest and best client, because of a small mis-

take that could’ve happened to anyone in his industry. After getting berated by his boss (Judge) and made to feel worthless (Victim), the feeling of failure takes over and the only thing that will bring relief from this awful day is getting home to Diane, Jack’s beloved. On the way home from work, Jack plays the tape of The Judge over and over and begins to ask himself questions like “How could you be such an idiot? See, you knew you weren’t good enough. You should just quit now, at 24 years old.” (As all of the entrepreneurs reading this column laugh, identifying with that last thought.) Jack wipes the tears away and clears his throat from his eyes as he pulls into the driveway. That’s a whole lot of judging and victimization, right? Wait for it... Diane, Jack’s young bride, has prepared the most exquisite meal for Jack. She has been waiting all day to see him. She sees the headlights pull in the driveway and her heart leaps. Jack’s mind instantly switches the moment he catches a glimpse of Diane in the window. He “knows” (thinks) that he can’t show his vulnerabilities to his new wife, or she may think he is weak and unfit to be her provider and her protector. (Judge) Jack attempts to swallow the victim and replace his tears with a stern face, but just as he opens the door, he feels a lump in his throat. In an effort to hide his emotion from Diane, he storms in the house and straight to the bedroom. Diane pauses, with her jaw dropped. Instantly, the story begins going in her mind. “Oh my goodness I just slaved over this entire meal for him and he doesn’t even care. What a jerk! I knew things weren’t right with us. If only I’d listened to my Mother when she said he wasn’t good enough for me…” And the story continues. Victim and Judge confetti being thrown all over this relationship. Meanwhile Jack is trying to compose himself in the bathroom so that he can slap a fake smile on and give Diane the appreciation that he knows that she deserves. She is his everything and all he needs is that incredible dinner, her company, and a warm hug. He composes himself and walks out of the bathroom with

a beaming smile, but Diane is gone. HOW MANY TIMES HAS THIS HAPPENED TO YOU?? You might not have the exact same story, but we all do this! We either judge people or situations or we victimize ourselves to protect our precious selves from being hurt. Stop being precious. Seriously. I’m talking to myself as well. This story is a small example of how those human behaviors can destroy relationships, which are the most important things in our lives. Here is the good news: awareness is the first step to change. Once we become aware of our behaviors and issues, we can identify when we begin to do it. I have been focusing on it for weeks and I have realized that WOW! I am the most offended person in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, but I am actively growing in that area, because I am so aware of why I do the things that I do now and I am able to stop myself dead in my own tracks and say “Enough! You are judging and victimizing like crazy. Drop the story and breathe.” I hope that with this newly found awareness, you’ll be able to “grow forth” as well. s someone who works with recovering individuals each day at Recovery Centers of America at Lighhouse (RCA) in Mays Landing, I find that it’s imperative that you be able to access activities that help you successfully continue along your journey. Michael McDonald and Chaka Khan at the Tropicana Casino Belting Out The Hits

he large Tropicana showroom was packed for the double headliner this past Saturday night. Chaka Khan, the 10 time Grammy award winner, opened the show with her 10 piece tight band that included 3 female background singers too. Chaka Khan had part of the crowd on their feet with the first song. Opening up with "This Is My Night", followed by the ever popular and funky "Tell me Something Good" from her Rufus band days, had everyone in the crowd rising or tapping in place. Khan has sold over 70 million albums and had her share of fans there at the show. She kept the crowd entertained with more hits like "Sweet Thing," " Through the Fire," and "I Feel For You". Then the place went crazy when she sang the classic song anthem "I'm Every Woman." Khan

came back for an encore and performed another hit "Aint Nobody" which had every person on their feet dancing and tapping to the funky 4/4 beat rhythm. Then Michael McDonald was introduced and they performed a song together with Chaka Khan`s band still set up called "You Belong To Me," a song McDonald wrote with Carly Simon. A quick intermission followed to allow a fast set change for Michael McDonald's band to set up in full. The 67 year old Michael McDonald, songwriter, plays keyboard, guitar and drums. He started out with his claim to fame, playing with the band Steely Dan back in 1974. In 2006, he joined Steely Dan again on the bands summer tour, both as a solo and opening act and later as part of the band. McDonald is perhaps better known by most for singing and writing with the popular Doobie Brothers in 1975 to 1982 years and again in 1987. A five time, multiple grammy award winner himself, McDonald, as a solo artist, now with10 albums out, has collaborated with big selling

artists on recordings such as Kenny Loggins, Aretha Franklin, Toto, Patti Labelle, and even Van Halen. He also recorded for television and film soundtracks to add to his accomplished resume. McDonald started out with " Keep Forgetting" playing the guitar and singing in style with his 7 piece group which included one female singer adding backup and lead vocals at times on duets. He switched over quickly to keyboards and sang another hit " Ya Mo Be There", a duet he co-wrote with James Ingram, won them both a Grammy

award in 1985, and won for best R&B performance by a duo or group. Then he performed "Here to Love You". The flow of songs increased when he performed six hits in a row being: "On My Own" the nice duet, followed by "Real Love," then the classic " Aint No Mountain High Enough," "Real Thing," and two Doobie Brothers classics he wrote "Minute by Minute" and "What A Fool Believes." Afterwards Chaka Khan was welcomed back on stage to sing a duet on the Marvin Gaye Classic "What's Going On," followed by the ending tune, the classic Doobie Brothers song "Minute By Minutes" with Chaka. The show was very good and the acoustics were excellent. The show ran a little longer than most concerts because of the set changes required for the two bands. The duo tour was off next to Columbus Ohio for a mid west visit of their nationwide tour. Upcoming entertainment musical concerts at the Tropicana Casino in AC are: Saturday July 6th, Colbie Caillat featuring Gone West, as well, Chris Isaak on Saturday July 27th, and the Dark Star Orchestra (Celebrating the Grateful Dead Experience) on Friday August 9th.

Thank you Catherine de’ Medici By Chef Joseph Massaglia

he history of food and food culinary terms has always been fascinating to me. In this column I’m going to focus on familiar Italian (of course!) foods that are part of our everyday lives, no matter what country you call home. And while it may seem that the following three things I’m going to talk about are unrelated, they are in fact, all related to the famous Medici family – of which Catherine is the most well-known. First, since it’s summer at the New Jersey Shore, let’s talk about gelato. Gelato means ice cream

in Italian, and ice cream and gelato are like cousins. They both include milk and sugar in their bases, but ice cream has a larger proportion of cream and egg yolks to milk. Gelato on the other hand calls for smaller amounts of cream and egg yolks with the milk, so it’s lower in fat. Ice cream is churned more quickly and thus incorporates more air, while gelato, churned more slowly, is more dense. According to the Gelato Muse-

um Carpigiani in Anzola dell’Emila, just outside of Bologna, (yes, gelato has its own museum!) the origin of gelato goes back 12,000 years to when Mesopotamian slave runners traveled over 60 miles to collect ice and snow used to cool drinks made with fruit juices during royal banquets and religious ceremonies. During the 11th century, the Arabs developed shrbs (we call them shrubs today), sugar syrups which were the base for many things including

sorbets, which became very popular in Sicily when it was under Arab rule. It’s believed the gelato we know today was created by alchemist Cosimo Ruggieri during the Renaissance in Florence for the Medici family, and in the late 1600s Sicilian chef Francesco Procopio de Coltelli opened a café in Paris and became the first person to sell gelato to the public. The rest, as we say, is history. A well-known culinary term also has its roots in the court of Catherine de’ Medici. Florentine or à la Florentine has come to mean a food, usually eggs or poultry, cooked in butter, served over a bed of spinach, topped with Mornay sauce and grated cheese and then popped under the broiler to brown. (Mornay sauce is a classic white béchamel sauce to which cheese, usually grated Parmesan and Gruyère, is added.) Historians can’t agree why spinach and Florentine are related. One theory is that Arab merchants brought spinach with them to Sicily over 1200 years ago and it thrived in the Mediterranean region. Another theory is that when 14-year-old Catherine left

Italy to marry King Henry II she (or her chefs) took bundles of spinach with her to her wedding. And a third theory is that when she arrived in Marseilles for the wedding, her chefs discovered spinach growing everywhere and cooked with it because it was familiar to them. But before I end this article, Florentine also can refer to a type of cookie. Florentines are a thin, crunchy wafer or cookie usually made with honey or nuts and sometimes partially coated with chocolate. Created in the late 17th century in France, historians think they were named Florentines in honor of Catherine de’ Medici’s family in Italy. Or, that perhaps she brought the recipe with her from Italy. Truth is, no one knows how they got their name, but we do know they are delicious. So, there you have three Italian foods that are a part of our culinary lives, and all are delicious. But as

Vans Warped Tour draws over 30,000 to AC

ans Warped Tour, an annual cross-country punkrock music festival, commemorated it's 25th year anniversary with a three-stop tour. One of those stops was the Atlantic City beach, the only East Coast stop of the 2019 tour. This past weekend, from June 29-30, approximately

60,000 punks descended upon AC to party, headbang, and watch their favorite bands perform. I was lucky to count myself among them, and checked out the concerts myself on Sunday, the final date of the two-day festival. The line to get in stretched up the boardwalk. I spoke to Samantha Capofarri and Mike Morales as I waited to get in. They drove up to AC from Florida, and this was their sixth Warped Tour they had attended. They shared with me how a festival this long-running had adapted to entertain both a new generation of fans and the fans who had been coming since the beginning. As I walked around the festival, I saw definite markers of youth culture. In fact, Warped Tour even boasts of having a “reverse daycare,” a place where parents accompanying their punk teens can hang

Angelina Pustizzi of Upper Township is stoked to meet her favorite band Sleeping with Sirens! out as their children attend concerts. However, Warped Tour also brought back bands who had been coming since the beginning. Legendary bands like Anti-Flag, The Offspring, and Blink-182 headlined the festival. I saw plenty of fans, both young and old, rocking out to heavy music that never grew old. Beyond the headliners, Warped Tour has often features smaller bands and up-and-coming artists that play on the other side of the venue. While Blink-182 and The Offspring did not disappoint, one of my favorite acts I

saw there was a lesser-known band called Keep Flying. I hadn’t heard of them before seeing them perform, but left a fan. The eclectic band

featured a trumpeter that would skip around the stage and pretend to play his instrument like a guitar. I was highly entertained, and was reminded that one of the reasons I like punk music is the unbridled energy. I also loved watching the skateboarding expo. Tourism and Heritage at Stockton Atlantic City By Levi Fox

tockton University in Atlantic City has recently been at the center of several major tourism and heritage events of note. Last week when I went there to participate in one event, I ended up attending a second as well. I arrived early, so I had some time to see a new marine archeology exhibit that was recently relocated from the New Jersey Maritime Museum in Beach Haven to the main lobby of the Academic Building of Stockton’s AC campus. The exhibit notes the history of the Steamship Robert J. Walker, which served the United States Coast Survey from 1848 until sinking in 1860, off the Atlantic City coast, as well as the work done over the last decade by Stockton students to digitally map the wreckage. Moreover, marine archaeologist

Stephen Nagiewicz, whose students worked on the project, presented a lecture on June 18 about the history of the Robert J. Walker and several other projects that are ongoing in the area, such as Revolutionary era shipwrecks in the Mullica River from the Battle of Chestnut Neck. I was at Stockton to participate in a panel discussion on the concept of BLEISURE, a combination of the words Business and Leisure, that focuses on those traveling for business but looking to experience the leisure offerings of an area while there. The

panel was organized by the Small Business Development Center, which is currently housed in Stockton’s Rothenberg Building, and included a representative from the A Representative from Stockton's LIGHT, the Cwner of university’s Levinson Tripician's, and Myself. The Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial Sign Unveiled by Dignitaries. At the end of the panel, someone mentioned that at that moment was the unveiling of the sign for the new Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial that is set to be built at Roosevelt Plaza in front of Stockton Atlantic City’s residential building. After sneaking into the Fannie Lou Hamer Event Room-- dedicated last year to the Civil Rights pioneer who campaigned for voting rights at the 1964 DNC in AC--to get a picture of a 3-D model of the memorial, I ran to the Boardwalk to catch the dedication itself that was already in progress. I arrived in time to see several speeches by local politicians and people directly involved in the long process of bringing a Holocaust Memorial to the Boardwalk, including a failed effort to building a monument at a pavilion across from the James Candy Factory and next to the Heart Walk, as well as the formal unveiling of the signage that shows what the

future now holds for the memorial. While the size of the crowd for the mid-week event was impressive, the fact that it included high-level state politicians—and brought together individuals from across partisan divides for a common cause—demonstrates just how important remembering the lessons of the past is to many in our community. The involvement of Stockton, which is home to one of the premiere Holocaust and Genocide Studies programs in the country, also shows the university’s dedication to providing public education on important historical topics. The expansion of Stockton in Atlantic City has also allowed for a renewed focus on the local history of the community, perhaps best shown in a three-part lecture series planned for July that is being hosted by Stockton’s Continuing Studies office. Taking place over three Tuesdays at 6 PM--from July 16 to July 30—the

series begins with Ralph Hunter, the founder of the African-American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, talking about “The Northside and Social Movements.” The second session features Stockton’s Special Collections Librarian Heather Perez, creator of the Atlantic City Experience website and a truly engaging lecturer, talking about “Tourism and Entertainment,” while the final

session features Boardwalk Empire author Nelson Johnson talking about “Power and Politics.” Dr. Levi Fox holds a PhD in History from Temple and teaches at Stockton. Levi is also Secretary of the Somers Point Historical Preservation Commission and President of Jersey Shore Tours

Local Business Highlight: Talk of the Towne Margate’s Iconic Women’s Apparel Store

trolling down Ventnor Avenue in Margate is always an adventure and full of new surprises. The large number of stores and restaurants to peruse through has made both Margate and Ventnor a premier destination to shop and dine at the shore. While there are many Ventnor Avenue favorites for both locals and summer

visitors to stop in, Talk of the Towne, a longtime favorite boutique store has been a popular staple of Margate for over 50 years. The business opened up in 1968 and originally specialized in the highest quality and unique designer bathing suits at a discounted price. Since their opening, they have broadened their inventory to include sportswear, fashionable coats, sweaters, pants, and a huge variety of brands and styles. The store owner, Faith Rosenkrantz, has worked at Talk of the Towne for most of her life. The store was originally opened by her parents in 1968. The iconic shop has been a family owned and operated business ever since. Faith eventually took over as the business owner in 1981 and has

continuously elevated the store to new heights while never losing sight of the customer-oriented experience that made Talk of the Towne the unique business her parents created

all those years back. “We offer personalized attention and welcome new customers who often become like good friends” explained Rosenkratz. The customer service experience that Talk of Towne gives to their patrons is what has kept them in business for over 50 years. Often people come into the store looking for bathing suits and beach wear during the busy summer season. The employees of Talk of Towne are always eager to help customers find not only the right size suit for them, but they also want to make sure that they find the right apparel that they will feel confident and happy in before hitting the beach, pool, boardwalk, or wherever the summer may take them. Back in 2013, the store underwent a thorough renovation. They renovations were done with the customer’s satisfaction in mind and to allow more people into the store at a time. The floor space has been generously expanded allowing more room for customers to browse and more clothes to be on display for purchase. The renovations also created more dressing rooms and mirrors for customers to try on the many different clothes that Talk of the Towne has to offer. The different items Talk of the Towne carries varies immensely, and they are always bringing in new lines. Sportswear is another specialty of this store and they carry everything from “going out” clothes and slacks to sweatpants and t-shirts. They carry fine beachwear and cover-ups including UPF-50 clothing and hats for sun protection. Their sportswear sizes typically range from extra small (xs) to extra large (xl). They also have a wide variety of fashionable items like handbags and totes, parkas, and shoes: a new addition this year. Real Estate Update A Look at Longport

ongport is located on the southwest corner of Absecon Island, and was once about 180 acres bigger in size, until a series of storms took out about 10 streets which were washed away between years 1900 to 1916. The Great Egg Harbor Island Inlet shifted north, and neighboring Ocean City island gained ground then, and was extended by what is known as the Gardens section of Ocean City. As one rides through and visits Longport today, beautiful stunning newer homes prevail everywhere with numerous new construction 3 story homes . The average median sales price for Longport in 2018 was $1,150,000. That is a large increase of 15.1 % from the 2017 median sales price. Look at that compared to the average median sales price for Atlantic County in general for 2018, just $185,000. The property tax rate is favorable to homeowners because of the high number of second homeowners and no schools prevail at

all in Longport, which has sending rights to nearby town of Margate for education for grades kindergarten to 8th grade. High school students go to Ocean City high as of 2014-2015 school years. In year 2014, nearby residents of the waterfront community of Seaview Harbor, located across the beach thorofare, submitted a petition to join the neighboring Longport, citing the lack of access to the rest of Egg Harbor Township, NJ and high taxes as reasons to want to join up with Longport. In November of 2016, the township committee voted to deny the secession plan. The highest price single family home to sell so far this year in 2019, was for

$6,650,000 in April, being a massive 7000 square foot 6 Bedroom 7.5 bath beachfront. As well, in 2018 the most expensive single family went for $5,140,000, a 5 bedroom oceanfront in the point area. The most expensive condo to sell so far this year was a 2 bedrooms 2 bath for $525,000.00. The improving economy along with the fabulous low historic interest rates makes it a perfect time to invest in Longport and all areas along the South Jersey shore area.

Ocean City Fishing Club's Scholarship Recipient to Study Oceanography

ured by the sea from the time he was a little boy, Travis Krause, recipient of the Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC) scholarship this year, plans to major in oceanography at Rutgers University next fall. From his home in Marmora, it’s just an easy trip over the 34th Street bridge to the Atlantic Ocean where he enjoys surfing, swimming and even a bit of fishing in the back bays with his grandfather. “Growing up at the shore just increased my awareness of how the ocean aﬀects everything along the coast,” he said, while visiting the OCFC fishing pier recently. “It seemed natural to me to want to study oceanography when I start college.” Within that field of study, he plans to major in physical oceanography, which involves the physical conditions and processes of the ocean such as tidal patterns and eﬀects. Other branches include biological, chemical and geological studies of the ocean. “Rutgers has one of the best oceanography programs in the country,” he explained. “It also has a marine

The university offers Reserve Officers’ Training Corps opportunities on campus through the Army, Air Force and Navy, which also interest him. “It would be cool to graduate as an officer and then pursue an oceanography career in the Navy,” he said.

There’s also the possibility of working in the private sector or the government. ” The young man has much to consider regarding his future, but he’ll spend the rest of his summer at his job on the grill at the pizza shop, surfing and doing some fishing, while preparing to transition from high school to college. “I’ll have a lot of fun this summer,” he said, “but I’m ready to start college in the fall. Rutgers is an excellent school and I’m excited to get started with my oceanography courses.” His course study fit perfectly with the OCFC scholarship program which awards $500 annually to a deserving high school graduate. Travis was recommended for the scholarship by the faculty and administration at Ocean City High S!!chool. It was presented to him by Margaret Feil, club secretary, at a scholarship ceremony earlier in June. Founded in 1913, OCFC is the oldest, continually operating fishing club in the country.

Summer Open House Wind Farm Tours at ACUA Free tours of the Jersey-Atlantic wind farm

tarting July 8, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) will offer free summer Open House Tours of the wind farm at its Wastewater Treatment Facility on Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon throughout July and August. ACUA’s Wastewater Treatment Facility is the largest hybrid wind and solar powered water treatment facility in the world. The wind farm is the first commer-

cial development of its kind in the state, as well as the first coastal and urban wind farm in the nation. Between ACUA’s wind and solar projects on site, a significant amount of renewable energy is produced each day. The tour offers visitors a chance to get a close-up view of the wind turbines, each measuring more than 380 feet from the ground to the blade’s tip, see 500 kilowatts of solar power, and learn

how these renewable energy projects help the ACUA’s wastewater treatment process. “Summer Open House Tours are a great way for us to share information with curious visitors,” ACUA President Rick Dovey noted. “People come to learn about the turbines, but they leave with an understanding of wastewater treatment too. It’s not something many people think about, so our tours are a perfect oppor-

tunity to educate the community on this essential environmental process.” Summer Open House tours are open to people of all ages but may be most appropriate for kids age 8 and up. The tour lasts approximately one hour. No reservations are required, but visitors should plan to arrive by 12 noon.
