e are FINALLY crawling ou t of t h e s t u b b o r n pattern we’ve been stuck in. That’s fantastic news. We can attribute the constant mugginess and storm chances to a boundary that was stalled out over the region since Sunday. When you’ve got high pressure to the southeast it prevents fronts from making through quickly. Think of a stationary boundary as an atmospheric roadway or train track that allows ripples of low pres-

sure to ride along it bringing daily storms. Dew points have been oppressively high. 60° and below is comfy. 65° is sticky. 70°+? Forget it. Louisiana swampy air at that point. That’s where we’ve been and as a result heavy downpours were able to be fueled. As of right now we’ve got a high pressure system building in from the northwest which will boot out the boundary. Improving conditions for Friday and then we are looking at a really nice weekend! To stay ahead of what’s going on be sure to visit my website! NorEasterNick.com have a great weekend!

Sea life - a day with the dolphins Letter from the editor

O

n Bob's birthday this year, we decided to take a dolphin cruise out of Gardner's Basin in Atlantic City. I resisted the idea at first because I tend to get sea sick, but the risk seemed worth it for a little of the magic that dolphin sightings offer. It turned out that I didn't get sea sick at all and we had a fantastic time. If I thought I loved the sight of a dolphin from 100 feet away, I was in for a treat, seeing them up close and personal. I wasn't sure what to expect as we embarked on the dolphin cruise. I thought maybe we would see

a dolphin or two. But to my delight, we witnessed dozens of dolphins that gracefully sailed through the water alongside of the boat. They seemed as interested in engaging with us, as we were with them. Captain Jeff George, owner of Atlantic City Cruises, taught us quite a bit about dolphins during the cruise as well. Did you know that the bottlenose dolphins that hug our coastlines keep the sharks out? The dolphins are likely the reason that there hasn't been a shark attack since 1916. Sharks and dolphins are natural enemies and it surprised me to find that dolphins are more feared by the sharks than the other way around. Dolphins travel in groups known as pods and defend one another in times of danger. This gives dolphins an advantage over sharks who are less likely to

travel in a group. Dolphins use their strong snouts as powerful weapons to ram sharks, targeting their soft underbellies and gills to injure them. Dolphins have even been known to rescue humans. There are many documented cases of dolphins saving humans from shark attacks. The dolphins form a hedge of protection around a human in danger, encircling them while escorting them to safety and keeping the sharks at bay.

Dolphins are social mammals that interact with one another, swim together, protect each other, and hunt for food as a team. Most pods contain anywhere from 2 to 30 dolphins. There is no place like our coastline. Look around and discover its beauty and wildlife every chance you get this summer.

Vans Warped Tour Brings Party to AC

Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

T

he Atlantic City beach concert of 2019 that has everyone talking, The 25th Anniversary Celebration of Vans Warped Tour, is just right around the corner. On June 29 and 30 over 50 bands with genres ranging from skate punk and third-wave ska to pop punk and metalcore acts will unite on the magnificent backdrop of sun, sand, and surf on the Atlantic City beach, directly in front of One Atlantic on the beach. Doors open at 12pm for this gargantuan concert extravaganza that holds the title of being the longest-running touring music festival in North America. Born in 1995, the Warped Tour has traveled annually each summer ever since. This year, Atlantic City is proud to be one of only three cities chosen to host this mega popular event. Although the tour is known primarily as a punk

rock festival, it has included acts of assorted genres over the years and will attract tens of thousands of youth into the city who will get the opportunity to see all their favorite bands spanning over the course of a couple of days. Not only will fans get the chance to vibe with their favorite bands, but on location there will be extreme sports ranging from

skateboarding to motocross, and an exhibit of Warped Tour art that has come out of the tour’s history. “With the Vans Warped Tour 25th Anniversary events, we want to bring the atmosphere of a classic Warped

Tour show, but on a scale that our fans simply could not get with a national tour,” explains Kevin Lyman, tour creator. “The bands, the special attractions, everything – we want to bring back elements that have made the Warped Tour, Warped Tour, over the past 25 years. Through the years the Vans Warped Tour has always tried to bring you something extra, [and] this year we have gone through the past archives and dug up many of our old friends to join us for these special events,” Kevin Lyman adds. “The curated art experience will showcase our favorite moments over the last 25 years. So, dust off the old Vans and lace ‘em up since you won’t want to miss a thing!” If you are a parent who is accompanying your teenager to this exhausting day of extreme music and fun, no worries, the tour provides a reverse day care, which allows parents to cool off while their teens enjoy the performances. No event of this magnitude would be complete without kickoff and after parties. Warped's very own Kaiser Solzie and Bourré’s on site Hostess Michelle Tomko are joining forces with NorStep Productions to host the Warped Tour's official kickoff party Friday the 28th and the official afterparties on the 29th & 30th at Bourré pub and restaurant. Upon entering Bourré, you will notice the beach festival vibe that will be carried through from the beach concert with a selection of surf and skate sponsors and clothing brands as well as fun outdoor games including skateboarding, beach volleyball, and cornhole. What I Got in My CSA This Week provide inspiration. If you are trying a farm share this year for the first time, good for you! Hopefully you will love the concept as much as I do and continue to support your local farmers. Last week I received arugula, garlic scapes, swiss chard, carrots,

frequently write about my CSA because well, I love it. A CSA (community supported agriculture) is a seasonal share of a farm. This is my third season being part of the B&B Farms CSA. A weekly farm share isn’t for everyone. You may find yourself with produce that you aren’t familiar with and to some this can be stressful. Luckily, most produce can go into your refrigerator temporarily until you can figure out what to do with it. I thought it would be fun to write about what I received in my farm share this past week and tell what I did with certain foods to

squash, radishes and lettuce. Let’s star t by talking about garlic scapes. What are they? Garlic scapes are the flower stems that grow from the top of garlic bulbs. Scapes are more mellow in flavor than garlic cloves and texturally are

quite different in that they are more like scallions. You can eat scapes raw or cooked. So what did I do with mine this week? I blended mine with olive oil, fresh basil and salt and then brushed it on sliced zucchini before grilling it. Garlic scapes are only in season for a short time so if you see some at your local farmers market, grab them and experiment! There are certain foods that I never ate growing up like beets that I now love as an adult. Another newly discovered favorite is radishes. Radishes are peppery in taste and crunchy in texture. I love eating them sliced either just as a plain snack or dipped in hummus. Another way I enjoy them is sliced and as a topping on avocado toast. They are great in salads and if you are feeling even more daring, try roasting them which will bring out their sweetness and juiciness. Swiss chard is another vegetable that I have grown to love as an adult and not just because of it’s gorgeous pink tones. Chard is a member of the beet family and is much softer than spinach and kale. I prefer using chard in soups and stews. Packed with vitamins and nutrients, I will gladly use chard as a base to my salad any day of the week. If zucchini and squash are exciting to you in the beginning of the season and you quickly tire of them, you need to come up with creative ways to eat them! My family’s favorite is baked zucchini fries. Cut the zucchini into long pieces, about an inch thick. Dip the pieces in egg and

then seasoned breadcrumbs and then pop them into a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. It’s my go-to side dish whenever I get some in my farm share. Do you have questions about what to do with your farm share produce or farmers market finds? I love providing ideas so send me an email with the veggies that are stumping you. Also, I would love to hear about your creative ideas. Do you love the idea of a farm share but don’t know where to find one? If you go to https://www.localharvest.org, you can find one close to you. If you don’t have a farm share, no worries. The local farmers markets are in full swing or starting this week including Margate, Brigantine, Ventnor and Ocean City. This is the best time of year to eat local! Marci Lutsky is a food blogger at Vegging at the Shore, www.veggingattheshore.com and can be reached at veggingattheshore@gmail.com.

My Favorite Italian Rice Dish, Risotto By Chef Joseph Massaglia

R

isotto, the famous northern Italian rice dish cooked with broth (and sometimes red wine like Barolo) until it becomes creamy, is one of the recipe icons of Italian cooking. The name risotto is derived from “riso” meaning rice. The broth can be either meat, fish, vegetable, and most, but not all, risottos contain butter, onions, parmesan cheese and white wine. By the way, my two favorite risottos are Risotto Tartuflo, risotto with truffles and wild mushrooms finished with a little bit of red wine, and Risotto Zafferano , risotto Milanese style with saffron, finished with white wine. According to some sources rice was introduced to Sicily by the Moors and Saracens in the 13th century. It moved north and wound up being grown in the Po Valley in the 1400s where it had ideal growing conditions: flat lands, warm weather, water and humidity. In fact, the Po Valley is still

one of Europe’s largest producers of rice used in risotto. Short grain rice with a high starch content is used in making risotto because that rice has the ability to absorb large quantities of liquid while releasing its starch to make a creamy risotto. Carnaroli is the most popular risotto rice used in Italy while in America Arborio is usually used. But other types such as Baldo and Vialone Nano are also used in Italy. And I recently read an article that said you can substitute sushi rice for Carnaroli or Arborio in risotto; I haven’t tried it so I can’t vouch for the outcome. Although there are many variations

of risotto in Italy the traditional method, which involves constant stirring, uses rice that has not been rinsed because you don’t want to remove any starch. You first make a “soffritto”

by sautéing onions, garlic, celery and carrots in butter or olive oil; then you add the rice and sauté to briefly coat each grain of rice with a film of fat, which is called “tostatura.” If you’re using white wine you add that next and cook, stirring constantly, until it has been absorbed by the rice. Then simmering stock is gradually added in small amounts, again while stirring constantly, until all the liquid is absorbed and the rice is rich and creamy – even though no cream has been added. It is the released starch from the rice while stirring

that makes it creamy. You then remove it from the heat, stir in butter and Parmesan cheese. It should be served “al dente” and the traditional texture is “all’onda” or “flowing in waves.” It should easily spread out in a shallow or flat dish, but not have excess liquid spreading around the perimeter. Probably the most famous risotto dish is Risotto alla Milanese, risotto made with chicken broth and saffron (zafferano), which gives it its rich yellow color. Risotto alla Milanese came about by accident, so one story goes, when saffron being used to color the stained-glass windows in the Duomo in Milan fell into the rice being prepared for the wedding celebrations of the artisan in charge of the work. Other sources say the master glazer purposely added it to match the color of the windows. We’ll never know the true story, but thank goodness this delicious recipe was invented! How would we ever eat Osso Bucco without it? And you may say, “Joe, Risotto alla Milanese sounds like the rice in Spanish Paella.” And you would be right. Spain ruled Milan for over 170 years in the 1500 and 1600s, hence

the Spanish took this presentation back to Spain with them. At its most simple presentation, risotto is a hearty warming dish, usually served at the beginning of the meal in Northern Italy. Many restaurants in America and around the world add other ingredients to the risotto, which is then typically served as a main course. These ingredients include spring vegetables like peas and asparagus, seafood like lobster, shrimp and crab, mushrooms and even bacon or pancetta. Chef Massimo Bottura, world-famous Italian restaurateur and chef/ owner of Osteria Francescana, a three-Michelin-star restaurant based in Modena, Italy, created a new recipe, Risotto Cacio e Pepe (borrowed from the iconic Roman spaghetti dish), after the earthquakes that devastated the Emilia-Romagna region in May 2012.

JUNE 20, 2019

Those earthquakes damaged 10 percent of the world’s supply of Parmesan cheese, over 300,000 wheels, and Chef Bottura devised the recipe and sent it out over social media to encourage chefs throughout the world to use the broken pieces of the Parmesan wheels to make this recipe. The recipe was an immediate success, all the cheese was sold, and jobs w e r e saved. You can learn more about his efforts in the Netflix series, “Chef’s Table.” I’ve included his recipe with this article. Invariably you may have some risotto leftover, and it’s really not as good when reheated. I suggest making Arancini di Riso with it. Arancini, which means orange in Italian, were first made in Sicily and are crispy, deep-fried rice balls, sometimes stuffed with cheese or mushrooms or even eggplant, that are served with a ragu sauce. Buon Appetito.

Chef Massimo Buttora’s Risotto Cacio e Peppe Yield: serves 4-6 • 2 lb. Parmigiano Reggiano, coarsely grated to make parmesan broth • 6 cups parmesan broth • 1⁄3 cup parmesan cream • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter • 3 medium shallots, minced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 cups Arborio rice • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste • Parsley leaves, for garnish 1 - Make the parmesan broth: Combine parmesan and 81⁄2 cups water in a 6-qt. saucepan over medium-low heat. When the cheese becomes stringy, remove from heat. Let cool to room temperature, and repeat heating once more. Refrigerate broth 8 hours or overnight. The next day, the broth should have separated into 3 distinct layers: a cream layer, on top; a broth layer, in the middle; and solids, on the bottom. Carefully remove the top cream layer and reserve. Strain the broth, discarding remaining solids (bottom layer). 2 - Make the risotto: Heat broth in a 4-qt. saucepan over medium heat; set aside and keep warm. Heat butter in a 6-qt. saucepan over medium heat. Add shallots and garlic to saucepan; cook, stirring, until soft, 3

minutes. Add rice; cook 2 minutes. Add reserved stock 1⁄2 cup at a time, cooking until each addition is absorbed before adding more. Cook, stirring often, until rice is tender and creamy, about 20-22 minutes. Stir in parmesan cream and cracked pepper; garnish with parsley leaves. * Open Now!! Views from the Shore

By Brian Cahill

Cahill, you know who you are? You're the person who knows the person,Those words were said to me by Joe Mitchell, my friend from Townsquare Media. It took me a second, but I realized that his comment basically summed up my 25+ years in marketing. I've been fortunate to connect with so many smart and talented people along the way. Thanks to Cindy, I can share their words and ideas with you in this column. I'll interview health experts from Shore who will share their views on topics particularly relevant to locals. I'll connect you with local retailers and restaurants who are finding new and creative ways to cut through the clutter. And I'll spotlight the people who are doing the things that make our area special. I appreciate you reading the column. I hope you learn from it as much I do from putting it together! This week I spent time with Saba Zahid, a registered dietitian from Unidine Cor-

poration, who is the patient experience manager for Shore Medical Center’s food and nutrition services. She oversees Shore Medical Center's patient food service program, clinical nutrition programs, and community nutrition initiatives. I always ask her for nutrition advice, and our latest conversation was about the healthiness of grilling. Here's what she had to say: Nothing says summer quite like a barbeque. But this all-American ritual is raising some health concerns, particularly if the grill is loaded up with meat. According to growing evidence, certain chemicals are formed when muscle meat, including beef and pork, are cooked at high temperatures certain compounds undergo biochemical reactions resulting in carcinogenic compounds. These carcinogenic compounds, known as heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are capable of altering DNA. While most of the research has been conducted in labs, accumulating evidence is indicating there may also be human risks of cancer. HCAs are formed when amino acids, sugars, and creatinine (a substance found in muscle) react at high temperatures. Most HCAs are found in meat that has been fried or grilled at temperatures around 300 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. PAHs are formed when fat and juices drip from meat

creating smoke. The PAHs transfer to the meat when the smoke surrounds the meat during the cooking process. Before you throw out the grill, you can still enjoy a classic summer cook-out if you keep a few things in mind: ●● Your body has a process for eliminating toxins and other things your body doesn’t need. Your liver naturally detoxifies your body and can eliminate these compounds. ●● Moderation is key. Continued, repeated, and overwhelming exposure to compounds increases the risk that a pesky toxin won’t get 100% eliminated from your body, so keep the golden in rule in mind: MODERATION. ●● Grill it, don’t burn it: HCAs are found in burned or charred parts of meat so avoid blackening your meat. Remove any charred portions of meat before eating your grilled proteins. ●● Choose lean: Fat drippings are necessary for PAH development, so less fat means less PAH development. Additionally, avoid using the fat drippings to make gravy. ●● Flip it, flip it good: Continuously turning over meat when you are cooking over a high heat source can substantially reduce HCA formation. ●● Don’t grill your meat naked: Marinating meat before cooking helps lessen HCA

formation by keeping the surface of the meat from getting so hot. Additionally, you can add variety and flavor with different kinds of marinade. ●● Think outside the box: You can use your grill for more than just meat! Season or marinate vegetables like asparagus, parsnips, onions, and squash and throw them on the grill. Vegetables do not contain the proteins that create carcinogens when grilling meat. So load up on the veggies! Fruit can also be grilled; try grilling peaches for a yummy cook-out dessert. If you need help developing a healthier way of eating, why not try working with one of Shore Medical Center’s Outpatient Nutrition Counseling dietitians? They can help you improve your health through diet. To schedule an appointment, call 609-6534600, option 5. “Try not to become a person of success, but rather to become a person of value.” - Albert Einstein.

By Alexis McCarthy

I

often talk to people who don’t feel like they’re where they want to be in life. They feel like the way they’re spending their time is wasteful. Maybe it’s a job they’re unhappy with, or maybe they’re home with their kids and feel like they spend every day just surviving...whatever it is, they want to put this time in their life aside and move on to where they feel they need to be. They even look at their time as wasted. Can you imagine? Feeling like you’ve wasted years of your life that you won’t ever get back? I can. I have felt that way before. That is, until I opened my eyes to the reality of the value that I’d found in the time I spent “off track”. When I first started working, I landed an ultra luxurious job at my local fast food joint taking orders on food that I didn’t even eat. This job had nothing to do with my PASSIONS in life. It had nothing to do with where I saw myself being in the future. I took it because I needed somewhere close to home that my mom could take me until I got my license. But do you know what I did? I showed up to work every day with a smile, I happily took orders and came up with systems within the drive thru window to ensure that every order got out correctly and I wouldn’t be overwhelmed when we were slammed. I made sure to ask every person that came through if they wanted to add cheese and bacon (upselling is a big deal at the drive thru). As a result I added VALUE to my position. Almost daily, I would have people compliment me on my friendly voice and smile since it was not what they were used to receiving. I could’ve chosen to look back at that time in my life and view that as “time wasted”, OR I could look back and reflect that job as a stepping stone into the next phase of my life: working at a cafe, then a front desk, then an administrative assistant...and now the Executive Assistant of Rockstar Real Estate & Media Group. My dream job. Do you see how that works? Instantly that “time wasted” turns into time well spent and in those places where I was not living my “dream life”, I still added value, and used that value to move into something that was my passion in life.

JUNE 20, 2019

This week, I’d like to encourage you to look into your current situation. Ask yourself 1.) How can you add value to this situation simply by being who you are? And 2.) How can you view this time in your life as a stepping stone to where you ultimately want to be? Maybe you’re in a job you don’t love, but you need to be there until you’re able to work somewhere better suited. Continue to passionately show up. Continue to use who you are, and bring your unique excellence to the company, in a way that no one else can. Do not worry about being recognized for it - your recognition will come and your reward will be worth the wait. Maybe you’re home and feel as though you’re in sur-

vival mode - believe me, mama, I have BEEN. THERE. Continue keeping those babies alive, and remember that there are millions of moms in the world, but there is only one you, and only one of each of your babies, and your dynamic with them is not the same as Condescending Connie down the street and her picture perfect family life...your life is unique and you can ROCK IT without being perfect. (Newsflash : Connie’s not perfect either) Do it with passion. If all you did was survive and teach your kid that wiping their nose on their sibling is really freaking disgusting, you added value to the world today. No really, you did. Thank you, mom! Your excellence is appreciated.

Something Christina always says is that excellence inspires. Be excellent where you are, even if it’s not where you WANT to be. You never know the positive chain reaction you will create. Until next time, Shore Locals, I am sending you peace, love, and good vibes! Alexis McCarthy is the executive assistant for Rockstar Real Estate and Media Group. Born and raised in Atlantic County, small town living shaped her life, but didn't stop her from dreaming big. She and her husband/highschool sweetheart, Mike, have a 2-year-old son, Levi

Brown Fighting To Restore Funding For Vets’ Doctor Visits By Chris Brown

A

s a member of the 101st Airborne's “Band of Brothers,” retired Lt. Colonel Buck Compton, humbly once said, “Today when people thank me for my service, I figure three years of my life is a cheap price to pay for our country.” Over 340,000 New Jersey men and women raised their right hands and swore an oath to protect and defend us at Normandy, Midway, Chosin, Khe Sahn, Basrah, and Helmand, giving years of their lives serving in hostile places and remote outposts. While our veterans may not expect or ask for special treatment upon their return home, I believe New Jersey has an obligation to care for those who served. Just as service requires sacrifice,

26

gratitude requires sincerity. It isn’t enough to only say, “Thank you for your service.” The pat on the back should also come with a helping hand. For many decades, New Jersey has offered a helping hand to our veterans by committing to provide veterans services. However, it came as a shock to me last year when Trenton politicians cut services for our eldely veterans. In the FY 2019 budget, one million dollars was cut from the State’s veterans homes. The veterans homes relied on the money to provide transportation for residents seeking health care not provided through the home, so veterans would not have to pay out of pocket. Even more shocking, while cutting funding for veterans services, Trenton politicians increased overall spending for other programs by $2.5 billion. For this reason, I voted against the budget. It’s one year later and Trenton politicians are proposing to do the same thing in the budget for FY 2020. Enough is enough. I am sponsoring an amendment to the proposed FY 2020 State Budget to restore one

million dollars in funding to help New Jersey veterans see their doctors. In order to ensure a balanced budget, I also offered corresponding savings in the budget to pay for my amendment. Trenton’s priorities are out of touch with the values of our families in Atlantic County who don’t believe

you increase spending by $2.5 billion in other areas of the budget at the expense of our veterans who risked their lives fighting for our freedoms. We should be looking for more ways to expand services, not fewer, to sincerely thank our brave Americans from the Greatest Generation and the Forgotten War to our Vietnam Veterans. In fact, we should be investing more money into New Jersey’s veterans’ memorial homes. As New Jersey’s veterans get older, the need for additional beds at the memorial homes is increasing. According to the statistics from the FY 2020 budget, 950 veterans and surviving spouses reside in the State’s three veterans memorial homes.

There are no available beds in any of the homes, creating a lengthy waiting list for each home. The Vineland Veterans Memorial Home, for example, has all of its 300 beds filled with an approved waiting list of another 300 families and is currently reviewing an endless number of applications. Let’s not forget, we can always do a better job in helping the 17,000 veterans receiving PTSD counseling, providing a roof and a warm meal to our 9,000 homeless veterans, and assisting our veterans service officers in advocating for 36,000 veterans each year who need help with their federal VA claims. While Trenton fell short, I am proud we have many families who rose up to express their gratitude to our veterans. Each year, families and community groups volunteer over 90,000 hours at our State’s veterans memorial homes by organizing trips, celebrating the holidays, running bingo games, and, most times, just lending a friendly ear. These families understand a couple hours out of their day is a small price to pay acknowledging and appreciating the valor and sacrifice of fellow Americans who put on a uniform to do what needed to be done.

Rounding out Asia’s lineup are founding keyboardist Geoff Downes and bassist Billy Sherwood, who both currently play with Yes as well. In addition, It was nice to see that original Asia and longtime Yes guitarist Steve Howe reunited with Asia to play “on the last four tunes” of the band’s set. The show opened up with, ELP Legacyand featured guest singer Arthur Brown, the eccentric tall frontman of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, a group that Carl played with in 1968 and ’69. His vocals were spot on with his bass playing tight along with a well rounded band. The ASIA group set was a big hit with the auidence, with Carl Palmer playing his signiture Ludwig drum set with two impressive huge brass gong cymbals in his background. Their sound was crisp and refreshing and got the crowd alive with excitement. Hits flying out like "Don`t Cry", "Wildest Dreams", "Sole Survivor ", "Heat of the Moment" Palmer also got to play one of his ELP hits "Lucky Man" with Asia with a welcomed arouse from the crowd. Real Estate Update A look at Brigantine

By Gary Simmens Broker/Associate at Keller Williams Atlantic Shore Realtors

The only road to and from Brigantine is New Jersey Route 87, going over the current bridge which was constructed in 1972, locally known as Brigantine Boulevard. Most don`t realize, the original bridge to the island that was constructed in 1924 was destroyed in the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944. What is now the City of Brigantine The area was originally incorporated as Brigantine Beach Borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on June 14, 1890, from portions of Galloway Township. The Brigantine borough back then was also named for the many shipwrecks in the ocean waterways. The most expensive home to sell recently in the last year was a beautiful custom home for $1,475,000 in the Sea Point area in 06/26/2018. A 3 story 5 BR 4.5 bath direct beachfront with an asking price of $2,499,000 was recently sold on June 30. Another top property, a 3 story, 6 bedroom bayfront with a listed asking price of $1,899,000 is scheduled to close soon. The upper end market is now moving with the favorable low interest rates. The real estate market improved

from 2017 to 2018 years with a 17.6% shorter time to get properties under contract for single family homes in Brigantine. The median sales price rose up 5.9%. The townhouse-condo segment saw a welcomed improvement of much faster sales, with 31.7% improvement and the median sales price rose up 2.2%. The market is doing well currently in Brigantine with mortgage interest rates near record lows, and the national economy growing strong and the local economy showing improvement as well. Be sure to check out two nice points of interest in Brigantine: the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge at the very northern end of the island, and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Established in 1978, the state's only marine stranding center rehabilitates and releases stranded marine mammals and sea turtles. It has rescued more than 3,900 whales, dolphins, seals and sea turtles since it was formed.

A Journey of Three

By Nancy Adler

A

s we all know , evidence shows that people who lose weight gradually and steadily (about 1 to 2 pounds per week) are more successful at keeping the weight off. I tend to disagree . Healthy weight isn't just about a “diet” or “program”. It's about an ongoing lifestyle that includes long-term changes in daily eating and exercise habits. It’s the people who embrace their new lifestyle are the ones that keep it off . It’s also not about dieting it’s about education, nutritional balance, accountability and acceptance . Any of these three clients you will read about in this article will attest to this. The good news is that no matter what your weight loss goal is, even a modest weight loss, such as 5 to 10 percent of your total body

weight, is likely to produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and blood sugars. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, a 5 percent weight loss equals 10 pounds, bringing your weight down to 190 pounds. While this weight may still be in the “overweight” or “obese” range, this modest weight loss can decrease your risk factors for chronic diseases related to obesity. So even if the overall goal seems large, see it as a journey rather than just a final destination. You’ll learn new eating and physical activity habits that will help you live a healthier lifestyle. These habits may help you maintain your weight loss over time. In addition to improving your health, maintaining a weight loss is likely to improve your life in other ways. My Clients who maintained a long term significant weight loss show improvements in not only their physical health, but also their energy levels, physical mobility, general mood, and self-confidence. It’s so exciting to watch their transformation! I’m so proud of them and thank

I had no knowledge of healthcare professionals in the area since all my doctors are in Philadelphia. By chance, I came across an article written by Nancy Adler in our local newspaper that described the harm sugars do to one’s body. I decided to give her a call and set up an appointment. During my first visit with Nancy, I was awfully skeptical of the meal plan that she provided. I felt that I would never get enough to eat. How was I going to give up pasta and bread; let alone drink 64 oz. of water a day? I didn’t like drinking water. Determined to live a better, and longer, life, I took Nancy’s suggestions and rigorously followed her plan. My weekly nutrition sessions

with Nancy help me stay on track. Keeping a daily food journal has been essential in helping my wife, and I identify the areas we needed to focus on. With Nancy’s guidance, I was able to shed the pounds I needed carefully, and wanted, to lose. In just a little over four months, I’ve lost 30 lbs., and have shed 4 belt sizes. My A1C has amazingly lowered to 4.9! My liver AST and ALT enzyme levels are also noticeably within normal ranges. Living and eating with diabetes is a challenge that I’ll have to face for the rest of my life. Thanks to Nancy Adler’s counsel and guidance, I view my diet as a new and rewarding way of life. Oh boy, am I happy I read that article!

her. I suffer from two autoimmune diseases, and I was tired of being tired! I would get home from work and would HAVE to lie down. I started working with Nancy May 2018, and by January 2019 I have lost 50 pounds. Not only that, I have the energy like I did 25 years ago. I’ve learned not only what to eat but HOW to eat! I’m forever grateful for stumbling across that Facebook post on a Monday morning. I finally feel good in my own skin

I thought sure I know I will lose weight, but will I be able to keep it off. Well here is where Nancy’s program was different for me. The regular accountability, I am not talking about the scale or the weighins. I am talking about nutritional counseling. Over the past ten months, I have lost 34 pounds. As I proceeded through the program, there were weeks where my weight crept up a bit. This is where Nancy will discuss your week with you. She will have you think back to identify your choices that led to the weight gain. This is key! It’s all about choices and learning what impact they have on my progress. Even if I didn’t gain weight, but my food journal reflected a concern she would break it down, and we would talk about it. The importance of following her guidelines for certain foods only three times per week. I love it when I find products I want to get her input on. I email her a photo of the label, and she gives me advice. She is the real deal. Of all of the parts of her program, it is the coach-

ing and education that has driven my success. I thought I was knowledgeable about how to successfully lose weight. But I have learned more than I ever thought I knew. thought I knew so well. From my very first visit to Nancy, I realized I didn’t know the principals as well as I thought. I have learned so much from her in regards to food. Just to mention a few, carbs are not your enemy; they just can’t be abused. Not all vegetables are created equal. Tracking is so essential because you never realize how many nibbles you take when you hang around the kitchen. The right protein is your best friend. I started seeing results immediately and have not stopped seeing them. Nancy’s program is food plain and simple!!! No gimmicks no magic just monitoring and controlling your eating. You don’t feel hungry because your body is receiving balanced nutrition. You can still find something to eat in social situations because the program is based on real food! Since I have been on other balanced diet plans, I was skeptical, and

Sunflowers Sprout Love By Jacqueline D’Angelo

L

ast year a friend of mine, George “Clipper” Allen, handed me a plastic bag full of sunflower heads containing last year’s seeds. He asked me if I wanted to try growing sunflowers in my new garden. I had a fresh new pallet, after trucks that had lifted our home, due to Hurricane Sandy, had destroyed most, if not all, of our original gardens, that had been there for 25 years. I loved sunflowers for years, mainly in pictures and drawings. They were my favorite growing up. Sunflowers to me were multifunctional, pretty to look at, and tasted good too. I would often see my mother throwing a few sunflower seeds here and there, and watching them grow. I noticed they always made her happy, but I don't think I ever fully realized how very special

these sunflowers were. I myself never really tried to grow them, I wasn’t sure what to do with them. “A little nervous?” Clipper asked me, as he handed me the bag of sunflower heads, if five grew I would be lucky I thought. The sunflower seeds still in the head of the sunflower, were poorly kept, and had started to mold. I willingly accepted the challenge. I immediately made myself comfort-

Lorenzo D'Angelo loves his mom's sunflowers. able and one by one, popped the seeds out of the molded sunflower heads, removing all the little critters

that had gathered inside, such as small worms and ants. It was a tedious task, but once accomplished, I placed them in a cardboard box lined with newspaper, and left them in our cool, dry garage, for several days to dry out. I began to wonder where I would place the seeds. I wasn't sure what kind of soil they needed, so I took handfuls and placed them amongst different mediums, from very rich soil, to very dry, sandy soil. They were placed in long trays and empty pots. I also put them in the ground and in different gardens as I continued around the house. It appeared I put them everywhere, even my mother’s vegetable garden. I continued around the house placing the seeds wherever I had some soil. I planted thousands of the seeds. To say the least, the seeds were viable. Every single sunflower started to grow within a month of having planted them. My mother, of course, wasn't happy about rows of

sunflowers growing in her vegetable garden, and asked me to remove them, once they were a few inches high. I began to separate them, and individually placed them in small growing pots. In some areas, I had placed too many seeds in the ground, and didn’t have the heart to separate them in fear I might kill them, so I let them be. As the babies grew bigger in the small pots, and became well rooted, I removed them carefully and continued to place them in larger pots. This was done daily as each one grew at its own pace. I had an area set up outside, I called it my “sunflower factory.” I was determined, to save every, last one that I accidentally had grown. Having run out of room in our own gardens, I knew I had to find people to adopt them. I asked neighbors if they would take some. Some were excited and eager. They too, like me, always loved sunflowers, but had never attempted to grow their own. Others were a little hes-

itant and nervous, which took a little coaxing. Their biggest fear was they didn’t have a “green thumb,” and that they would kill them. I eased their fear by letting them know that I had made it easy for them. The sunflowers were individually potted, well rooted, and I would show them what to do. We dug a hole, filled it with water, and placed the baby sunflower in it. We then covered the hole. It was that easy. Another fear was in putting back too much soil.

everyone in the school who worked there loved it, including the crossing guard. Before I knew it, I was taking orders. I would always ask, “How many?” to ensure each one of the babies had a chance. They were available to anyone who wanted them and could provide a good home. I often got puzzled looks from strangers, who would walk by our house, and comment how lovely the sunflowers were. I would always say,

Jacqueline D’Angelo, of Brigantine loves growing sunflowers. Her “green thumb” has led to the golden beauties topping 11 feet. I had noticed when transplanting many, that a little extra soil on the stem went a long way. They were like our tomato plants in the fact that the stem made roots on the sides, and it strengthened the plant, so they didn’t have to worry when filling the hole back in. One by one they were adopted out. Some to visiting family and some to friends. I don’t think anyone really understood the magnitude of what I was trying to accomplish, until they saw it for themselves. My son Lorenzo, a little embarrassed, asked his homeroom teacher. Before we knew it, he was bringing in trays upon trays and excited about doing so. He said the teachers and

magazine

“Sure, you want some?” I will never forget this little girl’s face as I handed her a tray. Her puzzled look became a smile, from ear to ear. She wanted to know how to take care of them. I told her that they required three things; lots of water, lots of sun, and lots of love. Many people asked if they would regrow each year. The sad news was the plant would finally meet its end, but the good news was that it would regrow and live forever, so long as they kept the seeds going, like people. I always asked where their new home would be. Turned out my sunflowers ended up moving to almost half of the United States and Cana-

da. Like I said, I was determined to find each and every one a home. I enjoyed sharing my sunflowers, I felt like I had made a difference - so many happy faces - so much joy. I too enjoyed watching my sunflowers grow and open. I didn’t know it, but each sunflower was different. Each one, like people, with their own personalities. Some made single flowers. Some made multi-flowers. Some were red, yellow, black, brown, green, and some were orange. Some were short and some were tall. Some were thick and some were skinny. At the end, I must have grown 12 different varieties. “Pot Luck,” is what I called it, and it was exciting, and educational, all at the same time. I was in awe with the tall ones. I felt so small looking up at these giants. My tallest measured at 11 1/2 feet upon opening of the Sunflower but continued to grow. I had learned a new thing. I didn’t know they did that! Looking up at these giant plants with leaves bigger than an elephant’s ear, you begin to realize, how small you are compared to the universe. The shorter ones were just as amazing. I would gaze into the heads of each one like it was a kaleidoscope. Snapping pictures along the way, it awakened my love for photography. After having endured everything that came along with Hurricane Sandy, I would say after several years, I was finally relaxing. It was soothing and food for my famished soul, and yes it made me very, very, happy. If you’re wondering what happened to the ones in the pots that I couldn’t find homes for, well they still had a home - our home, and they had made the tiniest of sunflowers, just as beautiful as their siblings that had grown up to be giants.

The HEROtini Challenge: A Contest of Mocktails to Make Atlantic County Roads Safer

W

ith the onset of summer, visitors to the shore are arriving with visions of sand in their toes and sun on their skin. And while many are also looking forward to their favorite frozen beverages, the HERO Campaign is making sure designated drivers have some drink options that forego the alcohol, but not the fun. Launched by the HERO Campaign over Memorial Day Weekend, the HEROtini Challenge is a summer-long contest between thirty-one Atlantic County restaurants and bars, challenging each to create the best “mocktail” in celebration of designated drivers. With creative names such as “Safe-Tea Driver” (Gregory’s), “Berry Safe Sangria” (Tailgaters), “Don’t Shuck-N-Drive”

(Harry’s Oyster), and “Get Your Ass Home Safe #mocktailmule”(Sofia), the contest is part of an on-going effort to promote the role of designated drivers, and the message of safe and sober driving with a positive, proactive approach so often associated with the HERO Campaign. This effort is one of many initiatives started by HERO Campaign founders, Bill and Muriel Elliott, in memory of their son, John R. Elliott, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2000. “Our son, John, always loved to laugh and have a great time, which is why we like to do things that ref lec t t hat . This contest is meant to be positive and fun, and something I know he would have enjoyed,” Muriel Elliott explains. The HEROtini Challenge is a donate-to-vote contest, the results of

The contest lasts until August 29th, though the competition between local establishments has already begun to heat up. early lead in the contest, the reigning champion from the original HEROtini Challenge, Margate’s Tomatoe’s, recently overtook the top spot, having raised almost $1,500 in votes at a recent event held by their sponsor “CRA Financial.” According to Tomatoe’s restaurant owner, Karen Sherman, “We take responsible alcohol service very seriously, and when the Reynolds brothers (CRA Financial) nominated us, we were glad to jump in and do what we could do.” The public is asked to donate towards their favorite establishment at herotini.org, and follow along on the HERO Campaign’s social media sites for the latest in rankings, events, and additional HEROtini promotions. The Story of Barista’s Coffee House

he sound of beans grinding and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air. On any given day in Linwood, Baristas Coffee House is bustling. Barista’s has fast become part of the fabric of the community where people meet and gather to grab a cup of their favorite brew along with fresh made to order breakfast or lunch while meeting with friends, neighbors or business associates. Barista's Coffee House is the brainchild of Mark and Debbie Becker and was born on hard times. In 2007, the Northfield couple who where in their 50's found themselves in a position where they needed to reinvent themselves. As the local and national economy sunk into a deep recession and after 26 years as a physical therapy administrator, Debbie was laid off. For 15 years Mark owned and operated his own landscape design and Construction Company, but suddenly, within the same month Debbie got laid off and Marks phone stopped ringing. The economy was collapsing and they found themselves with no source of income. Debbie and Mark loved a good cup of coffee though and had often spoke of owning a coffee house and what it would be like if they did. When they traveled, they sought out local independent coffee houses, “They always have the best coffee says Mark. This was the time for them to make their dream a reality. But they did not know about the business of coffee. So they attended seminars and trade shows to learn all they could about the nu-

ances of the coffee industry, they said “Failure was not an option”. Barista’s Coffee House opened in Galloway one year later. Debbie and Mark worked hard. They did all the necessary renovations themselves and worked 16-18 hour days. Debbie was also caring for her mom at the time, who had Alzheimer’s. It was an exhausting time,” recounts Debbie. Six years ago, Barista’s Coffee House moved to Central Square, Linwood. This was a dream location for Mark and Debbie, one they

had waited 6 years for. The space was originally an art gallery for 35 years and required major renovations. Debbie and Mark rolled up their sleeves once again and spent 5 months doing all the work themselves. This was the first coffee house in Linwood and people were excited about it. Their first day open, they were extremely busy. Many of their Galloway customers followed them to Li nwo o d . “We give a good quality product because that is what we expect when we go out, great service, presentation and taste,” says Debbie. “ We both have the same expectations and vision for our business and that's why it works.” One of the most popular items on the menu is the Josephine, named after Debbie’s

mom. .It is sautéed asparagus and onions with scrambled eggs served on a bagel. Debbie’s said her mother was the inspiration for her passion cooking. She had me in the kitchen at 10 years old. My mom ran the kitchen for bingo at our church, and you guessed it I was right there with her. Barista’s Coffee House is a community gathering and meeting place in Linwood and serves a variety of customers including professionals, shoppers, young people, senior citizens and moms. “Barista’s Coffee House is a very social place,” says Mark. “It is the perfect place to network, meet with a friend or someone to discuss business ideas.” “Time Stands Still at Barista’s” that is what it says on a very distinctive mural that hangs on the back wall. Those words are spoton. When you visit Barista’s Coffee House, you can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Debbie and Mark says

“Great Coffee, Great Food and Great Friends is what Life is all about and nobody does it like Barista’s”. So what are you waiting for? See you at Barista’s Coffee House!

rom June 21-23, the Atlantic City community will come together to celebrate art, music, and culture for 48 hours as The Atlantic City Arts Foundation, in partnership with Stockton University, will host the 3rd Annual 48 Blocks Atlantic City Event. There are 48 street blocks total in Atlantic City. Building off of that little-known fact,

and work together towards a common team goal. Monica Keenan, one of the pioneers of helping make this event as special as possible is looking forward to displaying the murals to the public. “I knew several artists were looking to paint murals for the festival and I thought it would be great if local kids could be part of the mural exhibits” explained Keenan. Once Monica was able to submit an application for a participation grant in order to partake in this event, she approached Francine Josephsen, who leads a youth art group at the Leadership Studio in Atlantic City. Josephsen, along with her students, were eager to get painting and use this opportunity to show the community their talents thru movable murals. “The idea was to paint movable panels because they are small and approachable” Keenan explained about the murals that will be displayed this weekend. The idea for local kids to participate in this event came during a 48 Blocks meeting earlier this Spring. So far, the kids have had a blast doing these murals. “We hope to try this again next year and have more children participate!” said Keenan. The murals done by these kids will be displayed at various locations throughout the entirety of

Extra Points with Pete

“School’s out for SUMMER…!!!” – Alice Cooper

By PETE THOMPSON

B

y the time you read this, most of our local schools will be out for the summer. Which reminds me that I was talking with a friend from Nebraska the other day and he was surprised that our schools out here went so late into June. I pointed out to him two big factors. One, is that schools don’t begin until after Labor Day. In Nebraska they’re back no later than the third week of August. Two, I reminded him that most seaside towns & boardwalk businesses rely on student age help to run their operations in the summer. To which he replied, “Well, that makes sense!” Where do you fall on this equation? Would you like to see the kids go back to school in August to be out by the end of May? Or, do you like after Labor Day and out basically around Flag Day…? Food for thought.

Since I last wrote, The Eagles have wrapped up their OTA’s and are not due back until training camp. The Phillies have lost their grip on first place in the NL East. The Sixers have watched a star player make a contract move that was to be expected. The Flyers have shipped out a popular defenseman for a Stanley Cup winner in return, and the Atlantic City Blackjacks lose their starting QB and a road game in Philadelphia. From the entertainment world, I’ve seen “Rocketman”, and in a beautifully renovated theater too. Plus, a big summer animated film opens this week as well. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: ●● Did a conversation between Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie & safety Malcolm Jenkins smooth things over for now? Reports are that Jenkins met one-on-one with Lurie at the NovaCare Complex about a week or so before the start of the last OTA session and whaddya know? Jenkins was on the field at that last session, plus says he WILL be at training camp, despite some rumblings that he isn’t happy

with his current salary. With how Lurie is handling this, you almost have to wonder if he’s determined NOT to repeat the mistakes he made when the Birds let Brian Dawkins walk at the end of his career. Either way, kudos to owner & player for working it out.

The Phillies are on a downward slide as their starting pitching problems continue to be exposed. Nowhere was this more evident than last Sunday when the Phillies had five days to come up with an alternative to struggling #5 starter Jerad Eickhoff. They elected to go with starter turned reliever Vince Velasquez and then turn it over to Triple-A call-up Cole Irvin. All those two did was give up 10 runs on 13 hits in six innings…! Making matters worse, the Phils then brought in Eickhoff…!!! All he did was promptly give up two home runs to the Braves…! Let’s see if they make a move before the July 31st trade deadline for a starting pitcher. In the NBA, kudos to the Raptors for winning their first championship. Meanwhile, the Sixers are waiting to see what Jimmy Butler will do as

●●

after Celtics legend Larry Bird), the Sixers are able to offer Butler the most money. The Sixers can offer Butler a five-year, $190 million max contract. But will that be enough for him to stay? The Flyers have been active in advance of the NHL draft. First, GM Chuck Fletcher traded physical defenseman Radko Gudas to Washington in exchange for a Stanley Cup winning blueliner in Matt Niskanen. The Capitals wanted Gudas because of his hard hitting and also the fact that his contract comes off the books a year earlier than Niskanen. This move appears to be a bit of a head scratcher at first, but if Niskanen can get back to the way he played two seasons ago when leading the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup, it will be a win for the Flyers. Speaking of the Cup, congrats to former Flyers Craig Berube & Brayden Schenn on the St. Louis Blues winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Berube did a magical job taking a team in dead last to the top and getting them all to buy in. Brayden Schenn was always a solid Flyer, but

could never break through. He’s got a ring now….! In Arena Football, the Atlantic City Blackjacks lose more than a game to the Philadelphia Soul last Sunday. Starting quarterback Randy Hippeard had to leave the game because of an injury, so Warren Smith, Jr. led the team in his absence. The Blackjacks lost 54-29, and they are also now on the outside looking in as far as the AFL playoff picture goes. The season’s longest road trip continues with a game in Albany (6-22) and then a game in Washington D.C. (6-29). Major props to Gary Woodland for hanging on and beating Brooks Koepka at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach on Father’s Day. Needing three puts to win, Woodland drained a 30-footer for birdie at 18 for a 2-under par score of 69, giving him the lowest 72-hole score in six U.S. Opens at Pebble Beach and a three-shot victory over

Koepka. Koepka was trying for a three-peat, which would’ve matched a record that’s held for 114 years. Now to entertainment as I finally saw “Rocketman”. Taron Egerton should win an Oscar for his portrayal of Elton John, but I have to be honest, I didn’t like the movie as much as I liked “Bohemian Rhapsody”. It was okay, but I just felt it wasn’t as uplifting as

the movie about Queen and front man Freddie Mercury. ●● That said, I watched “Rocketman” in style at the newly renovated Tilton Square Theater. Wow, what a fantastic job Brett DeNafo & his group did with the renovations inside! All the seats in the regular theaters have been converted to recliners. You just push the glowing blue buttons and the recliner adjusts to how you like it. It’s so comfy though, be careful not to fall asleep! ●● Other movies I will be seeing include “Toy Story 4”, (opens 6-21) and “Yesterday”, (opens 6-28). In closing, I’m happy to announce that starting this Saturday (6-22), I’ll be hosting my own show on 97.3 ESPN each Saturday from 8-10 a.m. It’s the “Pete Thompson Show” and I’ve been calling it “Breakfast with the PT”, so I hope you’ll tune in and interact with me on the air. I promise we’ll have fun talking sports, movies, TV shows

and whatever is happening in the news. Just like this column, I hope you’ll enjoy a mix of sports and non-sports items in a fun kind of way. In the meantime, school is OUT and summer is most definitely here…!!! Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. After a decade with TV 40, he joined 97.3 ESPN radio to talk Eagles, Phillies, Sixers & Flyers with Mike Gill on "The SportsBash" each day from 2-6 p.m. Pete is proud to be a "voice" for the annual ShopRite LPGA Classic each June, and does emcee work for groups like the National Football Foundation, The Old Grad Awards, and The 200 Club of Atlantic County. You can hear Pete each Tuesday on 97.3 ESPN at 5:30p, and if you see him out & about in the community, he requests that you please say "Hi". Send comments to PBrooksT@aol.com

Horseshoe Rescue

W

e are not a family with many traditions and those we have are subject to change at a moment's notice. One of our longest lasting traditions though began over a decade ago and, like some of life's most meaningful events, it began accidentally. I'm not sure why we decided to go to Fortescue that Father's Day, but we found ourselves there walking along the narrow beach. We were saddened to see hundreds of horseshoe crabs wedged into the crevices of the rock breakwater or upside-down on the beach. Unmoving, they lay, presumably dead, baking in the sun. I don't remember who first discovered that they were alive. Was some lion-hearted horseshoe crab still trying to maneuver his tail to get enough purchase in the sand to right himself or did one of us nudge one with our foot? I don't know, but the discovery that they were alive turned a casual amble down the beach into a full-on rescue mission. We spent several hours flipping horseshoe crabs right-side up and

digging through the rocks to pull out those that were impinged. My daughter, too young at the time to dig around in the rocks with the rusted metal rods sticking up at odd angles, would run each rescued horseshoe crab to the water's edge to save them the tiring journey across the beach and so that they

would immediately feel the water and know that they had a second chance. Each rescued horseshoe crab was exhilarating and we felt like small gods. It was hard to stop knowing that there were still many in need of help, but our movements became clumsier as we grew tired and the threat of a moved boulder

smashing a thoughtlessly placed hand or foot was real. Even with the knowledge that we didn't save everyone, we still felt triumphant. We had done a lot. That feeling brought us back year after year on Father's Day. We didn't keep track of how many we rescued and we didn't know that anyone else was doing it, that rescuing horseshoe crabs was "a thing". During a trip to the Wetlands Institute, my daughter and I found a flyer for reTURN the Favor (http:// returnthefavornj.org), a New Jersey organization dedicated to rescuing horseshoe crabs, educating the public, and collecting data. Participating in their walks, which last from May until July 14th, has greatly added to what we've learned over the years. We’ll go back to doing the walks on our own, but now that we know what data to collect and to send it to reTURN the Favor, a new dimension has been added to our rescue missions. I encourage you to visit the reTURN the Favor website and participate in one of their listed walks, some of which allow you to walk beaches that are otherwise closed. You might even decide to make it a tradition.

Saturday June 15th the day before Father’s Day The Wu Tang Clan turned the “mother” out at The Borgata. The Staten Island group has been authentically “Hip Hop” for decades now. Each member has a distinct solo style and have had solo success but when they come together, they produce music and moments that are special. I am proud to have seen them play AC. Invite-Hip Hop Live in Brown’s Park, AC! Please come

here me professionally mix some hip hop, R&B, Soul Funk, Rock and whatever else I can squeeze into my one hour set Sunday. I am curating a DJ set from noon to 1pm for 48 Blocks, Atlantic City at Brown’s Park. It is free, open to the public and will be rain or shine. Invite-The WCM African American Historical Society presents a musical tribute to Lois Smith. Saturday, June 29, 2019. 11am-4pm West Cape May Elementary School. Come on out for this free community reunion. My Take-North Beach is Coming. I am excited as anyone that major businesses want to invest in the Inlet or Northside of AC this summer. I do hope that as a native of AC, the parties involved have a community spirit. I would hate to see investments help a community I love, only to see the people that grew up there and live in that area disrespected, displaced and left out. I have already experienced one business that is operating in my old neighborhood that basically said that me and other residents that call the marina district home are not welcome to enjoy their establishment. So I hope that The North Beach will be a welcome addition for all of Atlantic City, residents and tourists.
