Weather with Nor'easter Nick

By Nick Pittman

When we look at where we've been weather-wise over the past few weeks, I don't have many complaints. Sure there were several severe weather events but they yielded no property damage or loss of life so it's a non-issue. I like the pattern we are in and going forward we will see a little of everything or ever yone's taste. All eyes are on the all important Father's Day weekend, right? I've got good news for ya: No issues. Friday

is beautiful, Saturday is great and Sunday will be nice - albeit a bit warmer. We will be rather comfor table through early Sunday and then the heat begins to build back in for next week as high pressure situates itself in a way where we star t getting the southwest winds to pump up the dew points. Enjoy the weekend and time with the family! Happy Father's Day Letter from the editor

A

s Father’s Day rolls around each year, I half jokingly remind my kids that they should thank me for getting them a good one. Bob was young by today’s standards when our son Jamie was born, becoming a father at 25 years old. It’s amazing that another 25 years have since passed and our babies are all grown up. I often wish I could relive those first few blissful days after our son was born when we thought we had a healthy baby boy. It was only a matter of time before the cascade of health problems began to fall in our laps as Jamie was faced with a hole in his heart, elevated white blood cell counts, and food allergies, just to name a few. These were challenging, however the one that changed everything was when we learned that our first born had autism. Everyone has their own idea of what fatherhood will be like based on their own unique life experiences. When a child is

diagnosed with a disability or serious illness though, all of those plans and expectations fly right out the window. You’re faced with tough decisions and a lifetime of challenges. Bob took it all in stride, though, attending countless doctor and therapy appointments. Our twin girls came along shortly after and we began lovingly calling them our “Irish triplets.” Our twin daughters were bundles of healthy joy as well as two perfect companions for Jamie. They loved to play with Jamie and direct him around every chance they could. As the years passed, the girls surpassed our son developmentally by early grade school. Each year, the gap continued to widen as sports and group activities were not options for our son. He did not have the language or skills to participate and unfortunately, this was before special needs programs were readily available in our area. Throughout this time, Bob continued to work hard for our family, dedicating every evening to spending time with his children. He did his best to attend every dance recital or school play and tried to divide his time equally between our three children. However, it became in-

creasingly difficult as our son’s behavior became harder to manage. Jamie had an increasingly harder time following directions and regulating his emotions. Meltdowns began to plague many of our family outings and would upset everyone.. Nothing could have prepared us for the challenges that this would bring yet no matter how hard it got, Bob showed up day and night giving his all to his children. He sacrificed quite a bit and hardly complained.

This is our version of “hard” and we know that every family has their own story. We admire the fathers who continue to show up day in and day out, who work hard to provide for their families, and who never back down from life’s fair share of challenges. We see you, love you and appreciate you. Happy Father’s Day!

Peace & Love, Cindy

A Blooming Good Time at the Linwood Arboretum

By Tammy Thornton

H

appy New Jersey Public Gardens and Arboretum Day! You may have missed this “holiday”, but the Linwood Arboretum celebrated with an open house, held on Sunday, June 9th. Attendees could sample refreshments, chat with fellow gardeners, or take a chance to win a large pot of beautiful plants and flowers sure to attract pollinators. If you missed the open house, you can visit the ever-changing arboretum 365 days Yarrow a year between dawn and dusk. Take a leisurely stroll through the

&

winding paths to learn more about native trees and shrubs as well as numerous uncommon and rare plants. The arboretum is enjoyable and interesting year-round. One of its newest collections is a raised stonework bed that simulates a peat bog, similar to those found in the Pinelands and is home North American pitcher plants. These intriguing plants are carnivorous digesting flies, beetles, mosquitoes, and wasps for nutrition. This small but beautiful arboretum was created to preserve open space that had formerly been an electrical substation. The building was retained and now serves as a work space and has also been visited by Santa during the holiday season. Some of the trees are really out of this world. Especially the Eastern White Pine, which as a seed, went to outer space with the United States Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997. Later, it was planted as a sapling at the Linwood Arboretum.

Fenwick Architects, who designed the arboretum, have also drawn up plans for the annex. According Carnivorous Plants to Butrus, “the annex will be an example of low maintenance, drought tolerant landscaping. 3 Local Dads Share Fatherhood Advice By Raymond Tyler

N

and want them to show that kind of devotion to their children.

ormally around Father’s Day I start thinking about what new angles I can use to pay tribute to my father, the late Raymond Tyler Sr. (My friends that knew him referred to him as “the original;” they called me “the remix.”) This year I decided I would take time to discuss fatherhood with three successful local dads. Here’s what they had to say on their experience, advice to new fathers, and what they hope their children have learned about fatherhood from having them as fathers.

Faheem Davis / DJ Fah D

Ben Rose

Podcaster, one of Atlantic City’s top ambassadors. Two Children: daughters ages 36 and 38. I was not prepared for diaper changing. Advice for new fathers. Hug your kids for life, starting the day they are born so they always feel cherished and loved. What I hope my kids learn from me about fatherhood. This father supported his daughters and helped to instill confidence so they believe in themselves that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to do. So there you have it from three great dads that get it and got it right. Father’s Day is this coming Sunday, June 16. Happy Father’s Day to one and all!

Director of Marketing and Public Relations The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Authority Wildwood Three Children: a boy and two girls, and grandfather of four I was not prepared for the total commitment of your time and also sleep deprivation. Advice for new fathers. Just relax and enjoy the entire experience. Many first-time fathers get caught up in their work and making a living for their family. But the most important thing to a child is the time you spend with them. That’s what they will remember. What I hope my kids learn from me about fatherhood. I tried to instill in my children the sense of unconditional love and that I will always be there for them. That no matter what, I support them and love them,

Atlantic City’s top DJ. Four Children I was not prepared for getting emotional. When I first saw my daughter’s ultrasound, one tear came down my face and I have been emotional ever since. I never cried before for that. Now I cry at movies and weddings. Advice for new fathers. Presence over Presents What I hope my kids learn from me about fatherhood. Set high goals and be OK with the outcome.

How to Create Interesting Salads besides fresh ingredients is having a good dressing. I don’t mean you should scour the dressing aisle of

y farm share at B&B Farms began two weeks ago. This is my third year of having a farm share there and it seems to get better and better each year. Early in the season, my weekly pickup is very heavy on the greens. Last week I received arugula, kale, chard and spinach. Luckily my family and I never tire of salads. If you find yourself with an abundance of greens in your garden or farm share, here are some helpful tips for making salads interesting so that you don’t get sick of greens by July. of salad dressing a week and reach for it whenever I have greens that need a topping. A favorite with kids is buttermilk ranch dressing which you can make very quickly using buttermilk, mayonnaise, g a r li c and fresh herbs from you r garden. Another favorite in my house is a simple herb vinaigrette. I will add fresh basil from my garden to olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. Give it a quick whisk or whirl in the blender for an easy and delicious dressing. Occasionally I will add Dijon mustard and some honey for a little change in taste. Miso (soybean paste), tahini and rice vinegar are some other ingredients I like to play around with in my dressings. Next you need to decide what to add to your salad. If you are serving the salad to kids, I highly recommend investing in a spiralizer because kids love veggie noodles. When I put spiralized beets, squash, carrots, cucumbers or sweet potatoes in my salads, my kids will not only eat it, but most of the time will ask for seconds. What else can you add to your salads to make them interesting? The options are endless. I almost always add avocado because my daughter runs on avocados. Since we don’t eat meat in our house, I usually add beans to our salads for extra protein. I always have garbanzo beans and edamame on hand. I like some crunch in my salads and usually I get

this from sunflower seeds (roasted chickpeas are always great for crunch too). If you like a little sweetness to your salads, add fruit! Orange segments or chopped apples are great as are dried fruits like cranberries. Crumbled cheese is a great addition too, with feta being my favorite. Salad should be anything but boring. If you find yourself with an abundance of local greens this summer, you are so lucky! Make a great salad dressing and enjoy a bowl of freshness. KALE SALAD WITH BLUEBERRY VINAIGRETTE

Once you pick your own blueberries it is difficult to go back to buying them in a store. When I moved to the Jersey shore I fell in love with blueberry picking. Nothing beats the taste of freshly picked blueberries. The kids love going blueberry picking and I love creating recipes with our bounty. Our favorite place to go is DiMeo Fruit Farms & Berry Plants Garden Center in Hammonton, NJ. We were one of the first ones who picked last week for the season and as always, we had so much fun. On the way home from the

farm the kids and I discussed what to make. They voted for popsicles which got made but I had my heart set on a salad. First, I created the vinaigrette by combining blueberries, rice vinegar, oil, mustard, a scallion, garlic, salt and pepper. I gave that a good blend in my Cuisinart Smart Stick. If you joined a CSA you are probably getting a lot of greens right about now. My green of choice is kale but you can substitute whatever greens you have. If you are using kale, give it a good massage until it starts to soften and deepen in color. Add the toasted pecans, feta and blueberries and toss that with the

salad dressing. This salad is bursting with flavor from the blueberries. The sweetness is balanced perfectly with the saltiness of the feta and the pecans give it just the right amount of crunch. This is going to be my go to salad for the summer, especially while blueberries are in season!

Hydration at every Age

By Nancy Adler

T

oday, more than 50 percent of all children and adolescents in the U.S. are not getting the hydration they

need . Summer is prime time for outdoor sports, family vacations, BBQs, festivals and long days in the sun. While you are enjoying those activities and the hot weather, it’s easy to be hit by dehydration—and most people don’t see it coming. Summer is also prime time for dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and even heat stroke—all of which are more common than you might think. Your food (not just beverage!) choices can account for approximately 20 percent of your daily fluid intake, and are therefore a major contributor to you and your family’s overall hydration status. Luckily, many foods that are in season in the hot summer months – such as melon, tomatoes and strawberries – are naturally rich in water, carbohydrates and minerals, including those all-important electrolytes.

In addition to dishing out juicy produce as a pre- and post-workout snack (orange slices, anyone?), infusing water with fresh fruit and vegetables like cucumber can give your ordinary bottle of water an extraordinary flavor. To stay hydrated, you and your family often need more than water. You also need electrolytes and carbohydrates. While both nutrients can help your body absorb whatever fluids you drink, electrolytes – sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium and calcium – are especially important because they are critical to healthy nerve and muscle function. And, all of these electrolytes can be lost through sweat. Fortunately, electrolyte drinks like pedialyte contain both electrolytes and carbohydrates, which consuming when exercising for longer than 60 minutes or during any activity performed in extreme temperatures. Without getting too vivid, your urine color can function as a simple indicator of your hydration status. Before, during and after outdoor activities, take a quick look at your urine output. If your urine

is a light lemonade color, it’s likely that you are properly hydrated. Dark yellow urine (as in dark or darker than apple juice) typically signals dehydration and need for immediate rehydration. Sweating is a major contributor to dehydration during summer sports. This goes for adults and children both. Sweat quickly evaporates off of the skin, especially when you are in extreme temps. To gauge your sweat losses and consequent hydration needs, I recommend weighing yourself naked both before and after exercising. Every pound lost between the beginning and end of an exercise routine represents 16 ounces of water – gone. Losing less than 1 percent of your body weight during the course of your workout is optimal. Once you lose 1 percent of your body weight in water (so if you weigh 180 pounds, 1.8 pounds), exercise performance begins to suffer and fatigue can set in. You might be running an 8-minute mile, but it will feel like you are pushing a 6-minute pace. It's essential for children to stay hydrated. Add some orange and lemon slices to their water. Even blueberries and strawberries add a welcoming change . That flavor boost may be your secret weapon in getting your children to drink up – which is vital since children are at an increased risk of dehydration and heat stroke due to their body composition. When kids

are provided with beverages that contain flavor, carbs and the electrolyte sodium chloride, young boys voluntarily drink up to 90 percent more fluid than they do otherwise. Parenting for the win! To stay one step ahead of the disastrous effects of dehydration, it’s important that everyone starts their day and or workout hydrated, drink during activity and rehydrate when it’s over. If you or your kids have a morning workout on the agenda (summer camps and tournaments, anyone?), you need to prioritize hydration the night before. That’s because, after spending eight hours in bed not drinking anything, it’s easy to wake up in a dehydrated state, and that’s even before you factor in exercise. Try to drink plenty of water a couple of hours before bed and upon waking. Try water and healthy juices at breakfast to get the kids to drink up. Happy Safe Hydrated Summer! Hit Movies. Eagles Fans, LPGA Classic among June’s Big Winners

By PETE THOMPSON

T

he arrival of the first full week of June brings the end to the hockey season, the NBA season, and the completion of another ShopRite LPGA Classic. In hindsight, I should have written at least a little about the annual event that comes to Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway each year. If you haven’t been, the Classic is worth the trip. Since I last wrote, the Eagles have signed their franchise quarterback to a long-term extension. The Phillies have returned home still winning, mostly, but with flaws. The Sixers continue to plan for an uncertain future. The Flyers are preparing for the NHL draft and the Atlantic City Blackjacks arena football team

16

missed out on an opportunity to win on the road. From the entertainment world, I still have to see “Rocketman,” but it’s a sequel (“Secret Lives of Pets 2”) that’s winning at the box office. Also, the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl” goes out a winner, but I have another summer show to recommend. As always, though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: • I’d like to start with the ShopRite LPGA Classic, which was won this year by Lexi Thompson. The weather was beautiful for the three-day event, and if you’ve never been, put this one on next year’s “must attend” list. Tickets are readily available and easy to get. You can even score a pair

for free with your ShopRite Price Plus card. If you have a daughter, take her out to watch. You'll see her face light up when she sees first hand that “girls rock.” You can also get close to the golfers as the LPGA does such a great job with “Autograph Alley” where the girls sign after they are done their rounds. I saw several big name golfers stopping to pose for pictures, none warmer than Morgan Pressel, perhaps, as she took the time to make each girl feel special. Great job Morgan. • Now a few words about Lexi Thompson, who made her pro debut at the ShopRite LPGA Classic as a 15-yearold back in 2010. I was there when she arrived at Seaview (loudly) in a Red Bull wrapped NASCAR vehicle.

She wasn’t even old enough to drive. It’s been a real pleasure to see her mature into the top American player on the tour these days. She’s had some personal battles to overcome, too, as her mother was struck by uterine cancer a while back. Kudos to Lexi for bravely soldiering on. I know she will be a great champion for the area. • I don’t know how he does it, but Eagles GM Howie Roseman has posted another “win” with the Carson Wentz contact extension. Wentz already was guaranteed $31.3 million over the next two seasons on his rookie deal, so it’s basically only costing the Eagles another $35 million to keep him in Philadelphia for the next four years. It's a major win for Roseman and the Eagles. • A major loss though is the departure of Eagles executive Joe Douglas who is leaving to take the New York Jets GM job. Douglas, 42, has been part of the magic that has allowed Roseman to make all the right moves. Douglas has shown a knack for finding talent and his departure is bound to have an impact on the Eagles moving forward. How much of

JUNE 13, 2019

an impact, we shall see. • Last week I wrote about Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera and his off-the-field troubles. Before the Phillies returned from a West Coast road trip, the team removed all signage of Herrera from Citizens Bank Park, signaling that they intend to move on from him when they can. • Over in the NBA, local products Eric Paschall and Phil Booth out of Villanova have both worked out for the Sixers. So has Shizz Alston out of Temple. Here’s hoping one of them lands with the hometown team. Last year the Sixers had two firstround picks. This year they have one (No. 24), but four second rounders, so "The Process" is a bit different. • There will be a Game 7 between the Boston Bruins and the St. Louis Blues (8 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, after this newspaper's deadline) for the Stanley Cup in the NHL. To me, there’s no better saying in sports than “Game 7.”

• I had the opportunity to talk with Flyers winger James Van Riemsdyk on the radio on 97.3 ESPN the other day. You get the feeling he was

frustrated with how his first season back in Philadelphia went and is hungry to do better in year two. His play at the World Hockey Championships in Slovakia certainly makes it appear he’s turned the corner. • The Atlantic City Blackjacks missed out on a golden opportunity to win one on the road at the Columbus Destroyers. Not only did they lose 54-50, but now they must play the Soul next in Philadelphia. Let’s see if AC can “right the ship” at the Wells Fargo Center. They’re not back home

at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall until Saturday, July 6 against the Soul. • I have few items from entertainment as I still need to get to the theater to see “Rocketman.” I can’t wait to see Taron Egerton basically become Elton John. • "The Secret Life of Pets 2" was the box office leader last week. I have to go back and watch the first movie again. Embarrassing moment; I actually fell asleep in the theater watching the first one. • I’m still wrapping my head around how good the five-episode “Chernobyl” was on HBO. Who would have thunk that a bleak, panicky drama about a nuclear disaster would be the success that it was. Thanks to HBO Go and on-demand, you still have time to watch this. • Finally, another show I highly recommend is “Yellowstone” on the Paramount Network. Oscar and Emmy winner Kevin Costner headlines an outstanding cast as the patriarch of a powerful, complicated family of ranchers. Season 2 kicks off on June

19, so you still have time to catch up on Season 1 before the new episodes begin. At the start of the column, I began by writing about the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Did you know that ShopRite donated more than $1.4 million to local charities through its tournament sponsorship? More than 45 nonprofit groups benefit from the annual event. The tournament not only hosts one of the strongest fields in women’s professional golf, it also annually creates more than $19 million in economic activity in the region. To me, that’s a HUGE win…! Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. After a decade with TV 40, he joined 97.3 ESPN radio to talk Eagles, Phillies, Sixers & Flyers with Mike Gill on "The SportsBash" each day from 2-6 p.m. Pete is proud to be a "voice" for the annual ShopRite LPGA Classic each June, and does emcee work for groups like the National Football Foundation, The Old Grad Awards, and The 200 Club of Atlantic County. You can hear Pete each Tuesday on 97.3 ESPN at 5:30p, and if you see him out & about in the community, he requests that you please say "Hi". Send comments to PBrooksT@aol.com

Dean Randazzo Brings ‘Won’t Quit’ Attitude To Paddle Race

A

Finishes First 22.5-mile Paddle For A Cause In Eight Hours

TLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY – On Saturday local surf legend and cancer survivor Dean Randazzo joined paddlers from around the world in a 22.5-mile race around Absecon Island. The 12th annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Paddle For A Cause presented by Seashore Construction brought competitors and spectators to the Frank S. Farley State Marina at Golden Nugget Atlantic City for 22.5-mile and 8-mile races, and a 4-mile social paddle in kayaks, paddleboards, outrigger canoes and surfskis on Saturday, June 8. Randazzo of Ventnor was recovering from a bout with Hodgkins Lymphoma when the inaugural event was conceived. The course was designed by Mike May in 2001 to challenge racers as a reminder that they are helping people struggling with cancer. Randazzo said that’s exactly what kept him motivated in the water. “It was really tough out there,” said Randazzo, “I just kept telling myself that I couldn’t quit, because if I quit then it’s OK for people with cancer to quit I couldn’t let them down.” Randazzo completed the 22.5-mile stand-up paddleboard race in 8:06:51.81.

Up until now a series of health issues had kept him off of the signature long distance course for the past 11 years and he accomplished a major goal by completing the race. “It was truly inspiring,” said foundation President Mark Zappone who extended the time limitation on the race to allow Randazzo to finish, “that guy just has no quit in him.” In the men’s divisions, Sean Brennan of Robbinsville Township, New Jersey finished the 22.5-mile race first and won the surfski category with a time of 2:49:37.61. Kevin Kahikina of Point Pleasant, New Jersey won the OC-1 division with a time of 4:04:57.64. Fielding Pagel of Annapolis, Maryland finished won the stand-up paddleboard category with a time of 4:04:35.94 and Ryan Matthews of Ocean Township, New Jersey won the prone category with a finishing time of 4:06:40.94. Andy Giordano of Ocean View, New Jersey won the master’s 14-foot stand-up category with a time of 5:22:56.05 and 14-year-old Hugh Shields won the prone 17-year-old and younger category with a time of 5:20:37.69 In the women’s stand-up paddleboard division Stephanie Shideler of Long Beach, New York won first place and

Monica Lewinsky Speaks at the Women’s Forum By Donald B. Kravitz

A

TLANTIC CITY — Monica Lewinsky stunned the audience of women into silence who filled the Theater at the Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City which was the venue for the 26th annual Atlantic County Women’s Forum, last Thursday, June 9th. As Lewinsky began to speak to the women the room went silent as she describe her life. “Overnight, I went from being a completely private

person to a publicly humiliated one, worldwide,” she said. Lewinsky, in a moment of humor remarked “My name appears in more than 125 rap songs without me getting any royalties,” as she smiled. Lewinsky’s health problems have been no secret and because of those problems she went on a self imposed disappearance from the public view, for a considerable time. “But by and large, I had been alone, so very alone, publicly alone. Did I make m i s t a k e s? Sure, we can all agree on that, but swimming in that sea of loneliness, that wa s terrifying.” L e w insky so impressed the audience that no one in the room made

Think Squirrels are Cute Little Devils? Well, You're Half Right By Charles P Eberson

Senior Moments: A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings e are being invaded by unwanted guests who want to come in and destroy the very things that are important to us. Their numbers are increasing and they are becoming more aggressive in their attempt to make my world their world. I’m talking about squirrels. What did you think I was talking about? Squirrels can be cute and entertaining little creatures. My wife and I would watch with amusement as they chased each other up and down the tree in our front yard or sprinted along the top of wooden fence. We thought they were adorable when they would sit up on their haunches and nibble away at food they were holding in their front paws.

W

Our dog also had a keen interest in our furry little friends, running from window to window when he caught sight of one. Sometimes we would just look at him and whisper, "Squirrel." His ears would perk up and his body become erect as he jerked his head around spastically trying to locate the source of our concern. Then one day it was no longer amusing. From then on, the squirrels weren't the little harmless sources of entertainment anymore. We were lying in bed one night and my wife said she thought there was something in our attic. I thought she was imagining things or was dreaming and suggested we just go back to sleep. Another nudge and she said, “there it is again." I listened again and sure enough, I heard some faint noises. I told her it was probably something on the roof and again, let’s just go back to sleep. Nudge, nudge, again. Getting irritated now, I got up determined to get to the bottom of it. Sure enough I heard something scurrying around just above my head. Not knowing what I would encounter, I grabbed a golf club and a flashlight and climbed up into the attic. Caught in the beam of my flashlight was a squirrel sitting among the ruins of some of

our winter clothing as well as an irreplaceable sports jacket I had custom made in London by my now-deceased uncle, a renowned tailor on the prestigious Savile Row. Other items of clothing were also trashed. My efforts to get him were futile so I had to wait until the next day when I went out and bought a humane trap. I baited the cage once. He ate the bait and didn't trip the cage. I baited it a second time with the same result. He must think of himself as a pet by now waiting for his daily feeding. Third time was the charm. I had the little devil Not wanting to physically harm the animal, I decided on a locale where I could drop him off and let him start his new life away from our home. I had heard that the best way is to drop them off was somewhere across a body of

water so they couldn’t come back. I am not an Uber driver for squirrels, so I just dropped him off a decent distance away from home near the bay. This week, however, I caught three and am working on my fourth for a total of nine squirrels since the dreaded attic incident. I have had a lot of comments on Facebook ranging from a suggestion of squirrel stew from my West Virginia classmate, to an offer of a pellet gun from another buddy, plus shared stories of devastation caused by squirrels, sad emojis, and requests to just leave nature be. To those who believe I should just let nature be, please provide me with your address so I can just let nature be in your yard. Meanwhile, I am securing my perimeter from all outside threats of the little furry, beady-eyed sort. Charles Eberson has been in the newspaper business for over 25 years. The Secret Key to Success: Be Hungry, Humble, & Smart

By Christina Sciarretta

L

ast September, I decided to get my very first (and only as of now) tattoo. My heart pounded and my hand shook, as the artist drew my pineapple logo with the words hungry, humble, smart beneath it. I’d chosen that particular tattoo, because I’d heard a role model of mine say that if one was hungry, humble and smart, he/she could successfully be taught anything. The moment I heard that, I had an a-ha. That was what I needed to be if I was to find success. You see, I believe that in order for us to have what we want to have, we need to be the kind of person that we need to be and do the kinds of things that need to

be done. So, in order for me (and you) to be successful, the recipe is simple: we just need to be humble, hungry, and smart. But why are those qualities so important? If you are hungry, you are a learner. You crave knowledge and understanding and experience. People who are hungry, learn and go and do. They ask great questions that lead to more questions. They don’t complain. They don’t make excuses, they don’t bother themselves with worthless drama, negativity, or the distractions that take their focus away from the main goal. They run fiercely after growth, knowing that there is no real such thing as TMI (too much information)… except for you, Lady at the nail salon talking about your toenail fungus. Anyway, I digress. Let’s talk humility!

If you’re humble, you put your ego aside. You don’t jump con clusions , t ake things p e r s o na ll y, compare yourself to others, or cons t antly try to put others down or make yourself look better. You’re “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry”, as the Bible says. Simply put, you put others ahead of you. This is important, because in order to become successful in ALL areas of your life, you must be able to work well with other people and humility opens the door to more possibility. Think about it: have you ever had a team member who had an ego? Was there any room for expanding an idea or vision or collaborating to make a project spectacular? Probably not. The result of that is smallness. There is no possibility for more and bigger. Ego shuts everything else down, because it is the only thing that matters. But humility will always win in the end. There is no doubt that you also need to be smart in order to be successful. But smart in what way? Make great decisions in every area of your life. Use your gut instinct, but think about the choices that you make before you make them. Everything is connected to everything! It is so easy to let life pass us by without making conscious choices on things that really matter to our future success. If I want to be at my peak health, and yet I eat out every day, simply because I am doing what I have always done

(subconscious), will I ever reach the peak of my health? And yet, most of us do this every day, making o n e u n co n scious choice after another at work and at home. Be smart and make sound choices in every area of your life. (Check out Hal Elrod’s brand new book The Miracle Equation for some awesome motivation in this area!) As I wrote, everything is connected to everything. If you feel like you struggle with information, experience, or expertise in a particular area, but you are humble enough to admit that you don’t know everything, and hungry enough to seek to learn more, you may just find that you get much further ahead than you ever dreamed possible. Everything is connected to everything. Hungry, humble and smart all matter equally. Now grow forth and until next time, Shore Locals, I am sending you peace, love, and good vibes from my beach chair to your’s! he road to success isn't linear and changes are to be expected. As you may have heard in recent local news, there are changes coming to what has become known as "The Orange Loop" in Atlantic City. The Tennessee Avenue Renaissance Project began in 2017 when investor Mark Callazzo delivered a vision to create a main street on the beach block of Tennessee Ave. It began with The Leadership Studio yoga and evolved to include MADE Atlantic City Chocolate, Tennessee Ave Beer Hall, and Hayday coffee. Simultaneously, investors on New York Avenue began the process of creating a block of restaurants, store fronts, and residential units that will eventually fill the beach block just two streets over. Bourre, which serves Louisiana style cuisine opened last summer with many more venues slated to open soon. Collectively, the blocks became known as The Orange Loop and include Tennessee Avenue, New York Avenue, and St. James Place - the orange blocks on the Monopoly Board. Hayday Coffee recently announced that they will be closing their doors just shy of one year being in business. While many have read the news and assumed the worst, I encourage you to see the good. The operators of Hayday are not going anywhere and it is the hope that we will see another Hayday location in the future. In the meantime, be on the lookout in the coming year for what they are pouring their sweat equity into on New York Avenue. For those who have thoroughly enjoyed Tennessee Avenue and an iced coffee after a sweaty yoga session, don't fret!

The Iron Room "Coffee, Food, & Wine" will be moving into the vacant space where Hayday currently is as of July 1st. The Iron Room opened its doors on Albany Avenue where owner, Mark Callazzo had intentions for great wine, spirits, and tapas style food. As demand for The Iron Room grew and the dining room began to fill, the menu evolved to include larger entrees and a vast menu curated by executive chef, Kevin Cronin. In the wake of the closing of Hayday, Callazzo who has ownership of the property, decided to move The Iron Room from Albany to Tennessee and fill the space, taking it back to the original intent of serving hand selected wines and spirits along with tapas style food. On July 1st, 2019 The Iron Room will open on Tennessee Avenue serving fresh coffee, a full breakfast menu, lunch, and tapas style dinner. Directly nextdoor, a new cocktail and music venue concept known as Rhythm & Spirits will also be opening its doors, also owned by Mark Callazzo. Often times when people see a business close prematurely, it is assumed that the plan didn't work or that "Atlantic City is failing again". While it is easy to make assumptions and form opinions, I encourage you to see the good and understand that change is okay. For those of you who have loved Atlantic City for a long time and those who have supported the Orange Loop, continue to do so. Continue to enjoy the new concepts coming to the three beach blocks and continue to be a part of the great community that has formed there since the inception of Tennessee Avenue. Give these incredible investors the benefit of the doubt, support the change, shop local. Be a part of something that is still great and only getting better. Marcelo’s Miracle:

The Incredible Story of a Local Family’s Fight for Their Son’s Life

By Ryan Gerace

L

ife has been a medical rollercoaster ride for Marcelo Joseph Llufire since the day he was born more than two years ago. His father, Franco Llufire, and mother, Kristen, welcomed him into the world on March 27, 2017. Everything was seemed fine when they took Marcelo home from the hospital to begin his new life. But baby Marcelo was having trouble keeping milk down and soon Franco and Kristen were worried that something wasn’t quite right with their son. “We first took him to our pediatrician and they said we were giving him too much food,” explained Franco Llufire of Mays

Landing. They took the doctors' advice and started to cut down on the amount of food given to Marcelo. However, baby Marcelo did not stop spitting up the food he was given. After going back to the pediatrician, they were told again that they were probably feeding him too much. A few days before Easter, they planned to take Marcelo to get pictures with the Easter Bunny when Franco’s mother noticed that her grandson had not improved despite their following the doctor’s orders. She suggested that they take him to the AtlantiCare emergency room in Pomona. After many tests in the ER, the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with him and initially thought that the parents had fed Marcelo something that caused his symptoms. Then things took a turn for the worse. “All of the sudden I was being pushed out of the emergency room and doctors rushed in all around Marcelo,” said Franco. The doctors rushed in because Marcelo was unconscious for a few minutes and they had to revive him.

MONDAY Madness

$7.77

When he was stabilized, Marcelo was airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The ride up to Philly was one of the longest trips for Franco, Kristen, and their family. At Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Marcelo was found to have total anomalous pulmonary venous return, known simply as TAPVR, a birth defect in which oxygen-rich blood is returned to the wrong side of the heart. Marcelo underwent open-heart surgery on April 16, 2017. He was only a few weeks old. After a successful surgery and a long 11 days and 12 nights at CHOP, the doctors were pleased with Marcelo’s recovery and he was sent home. Franco started a GoFundMe page during the time they were at CHOP and he was overcome with the amount of support South Jersey has shown his family. More than $15,000 was raised for Marcelo and his family during that rough time. Today, Marcelo is a happy kid who loves playing with family and friends, going on the iPad, and kissing his parents every day. “I pray and thank God every day that Marcelo is here with us,” said Franco. “He

introduced me to a whole new level of love and has brought us all together.” Franco and his girlfriend, Vanessa currently have another baby on the way. Lorenzo is due in September and Marcelo is super excited to meet his little brother. “I tell him to go give your brother a hug and he goes over to her and hugs her stomach,” explained Franco. Marcelo is now 2 years old and is a healthy and spritely young boy. He is due to have another surgery later this year, which Franco is hoping will not be another open-heart procedure. Despite all that has happened to young Marcelo, and the horrors he has gone through, you would never know it given his amazing and upbeat personality. We wish the Llufires and their family all the best with Marcelo and their next child due in September. Learn more about Marcelo's story at https://www.gofundme.com/MarceloLlufire

The Story of Barista’s Coffee House

he sound of beans grinding and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air. On any given day in Linwood, Baristas Coffee House is bustling. Barista’s has fast become part of the fabric of the community where people meet and gather to grab a cup of their favorite brew along with fresh made to order breakfast or lunch while meeting with friends, neighbors or business associates. Barista's Coffee House is the brainchild of Mark and Debbie Becker and was born on hard times. In 2007, the Northfield couple who where in their 50's found themselves in a position where they needed to reinvent themselves. As the local and national economy sunk into a deep recession and after 26 years as a physical therapy administra-

tor, Debbie was laid off. For 15 years Mark owned and operated his own landscape design and Construction Company, but suddenly, within the same month Debbie got laid off and Marks phone stopped ringing. The economy was collapsing and they found themselves with no source of income.

JUNE 13, 2019

Debbie and Mark loved a good cup of coffee though and had often spoke of owning a coffee house and what it would be like if they did. When they traveled, they sought out local independent coffee houses, “They always have the best coffee says Mark. This was the time for them to make their dream a reality. But they did not know about the business of coffee. So they attended seminars and trade shows to learn all they could about the nuances of the coffee industry, they said “Failure was not an option”. Barista’s Coffee House opened in Galloway one year later. Debbie and Mark worked hard. They did all the necessary renovations themselves and worked 16-18 hour days. Debbie was also caring for her mom at the time, who had Alzheimer’s. It was an exhausting time,” recounts Debbie. Six years ago, Barista’s Coffee House moved to Central Square, Linwood. This was a dream location for Mark and Debbie, one they had waited 6 years for. The space was originally an art gallery for 35 years and required major renovations. Debbie and Mark rolled up their sleeves once again and spent 5 months doing all the work themselves. This was the first coffee house in Linwood and people were excited about it. Their first day open, they were extremely busy. Many of their Galloway customers followed them to Linwood. “We give a good quality product because that is what we expect when we go out, great service, presentation and taste,” says Debbie. “We both have the same expectations and vision for our business and that's why it works.” One of the most popular items on the menu is the Josephine, named after Debbie’s mom. .It is sautéed

asparagus and onions with scrambled eggs served on a bagel. Debbie’s said her mother was the inspiration for her passion cooking. She had me in the kitchen at 10 years old. My mom ran the kitchen for bingo at our church, and you guessed it I was right there with her. Barista’s Coffee House is a community gathering and meeting place in Linwood and serves a variety of customers including professionals, shoppers, young people, senior citizens and moms. “Barista’s Coffee House is a very social place,” says Mark. “It is the perfect place

4

to network, meet with a friend or someone to discuss business ideas.” “Time Stands Still at Barista’s” that is what it says on a very distinctive mural that hangs on the back wall. Those words are spot-on. When you visit Barista’s Coffee House, you can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Debbie and Mark says “Great Coffee, Great Food and Great Friends is what Life is all about and nobody does it like Barista’s”. So what are you waiting for? See you at Barista’s Coffee House!

Twenty One Pilots Come To Atlantic City

By Holly Fertsch

O

n June 8th, Twenty One Pilots descended upon Atlantic City. Fans decked out in yellow and camouflage, the color scheme of Twenty One Pilots’ new concept album italicize this word, camped out on the Atlantic City boardwalk. The line to get into the venue, Boardwalk Hall, stretched back to Caesar’s Casino. Twenty One Pilots has dedicated fans. The two-man band from Columbus, Ohio has achieved significant success in the past few years, even winning a Grammy in 2017. Their hits like “Stressed Out” and “Heathens” have received significant radio play. Yet the band remains experimental with bizarre songs matched with frenetic imagery and intense, yet contagious, energy. Twenty One Pilots songs can be enjoyed by anyone. They specialize in upbeat, catchy songs that are packed with symbolism and hidden meanings for die-hard fans to dissect. Their lyrics cover hard topics like anxiety and even celebrity suicide. However, Twenty One Pilots still defiantly manages to keep the mood light, even ecstatic. The band’s sound doesn’t fit neatly into any genre, but they utilize elements of rap, punk, pop, alt-rock, and even reggae to craft unique, attention-grabbing songs.

The night began with opening act Bear Hands delivering a indie rock performance. Twenty One Pilots handpicked the band as their opener, and they did not disappoint. When Bear Hands closed their set, curtains descended across the stage to conceal Twenty One Pilots’ crew setting up. You could feel the anticipation

Twenty One Pilots often brings imagery from their music videos into their live shows, and this show was no exception. Dun took his place behind his drum kit as Tyler Joseph, the singer of the duo, emerged. The band erupted into “Jumpsuit,” a single from Trench. The theatrics did not stop with the first song. Dun’s

Joseph announced he has relatives in South Jersey, and he frequented the shore as a kid. Joseph told the audience how happy he was to perform in AC. He even changed the lyrics in the “Smithereens” to “everyone here looks so pretty/ for you I’d go sing you this song in Atlantic City.” All in all, the show was more than I hoped for. The set featured songs that have been rarely performed live like “Legend,” a song written for Joseph’s

while singing, only to emerge across the venue seconds later. The showmanship was excellent. Despite Twenty One Pilots only having two members, they filled the stage with their energy. The band donned several different costumes throughout their set, including Dun removing his jacket to reveal a shirt emblazoned “Atlantic City.” The duo also wore ski masks at the beginning of their set, which they dramatically tore off while performing. On Jersey Shore Beaches, Opportunistic Seagulls Get the Last Laugh An Introduction to Coastal Seagulls

By Steffen Klenk

T

here are more than 50 different species of gulls. All along our coastline, you can normally find up to five common species; the herring, laughing, ring-billed, Bonaparte’ and great black-backed seagulls. Like it or not, seagulls have returned to our precious shores and will, without a doubt, manage to keep beach and boardwalk-goers on their toes all summer long. In our area, the most common type of summer season seagull is the laughing gull. These black-headed birds are year-long residents from the Outer Banks of North Carolina all the way down to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico coast.

They regularly migrate to New Jersey in early to mid-spring, during the height of mating season, and will stay until October. You will generally find them along our shoreline, flying over the beaches and boardwalks, salt marshes and back bays. While most gulls migrate during the winter, those that stay behind are protected from the harsh elements thanks to their feathers. Their plumage acts as a natural insulator, trapping their body heat. Over the years, they have adapted to flying behind people and quickly swooping in for a meal. By nature, seagulls are carnivores. Their diet typically consists of insects, reptiles, amphibians and small rodents. They also feed on fish and crabs; they know how to break clams and other shellfish to get to the good parts. Did you know that seagulls can live anywhere from 10 to 15 years? They are also one of the few animals that can drink salt water without hesitation. This is a distinct and unique property.

Hamilton negotiator honored for peaceful end to standoff

By Lynda Cohen

Hamilton Township police detective is being credited with peacefully ending a standoff with a knife-wielding suspect in Galloway Township. A 20-year-old Colorado man held police at bay outside the Wawa in for three hours May 23, after threatening to harm himself while holding a knife in each hand. The man at one point

put his unoccupied car into drive and allowed it to crash into the convenience store. Hamilton Township Detective Michael Robison, a trained negotiator, was able to talk to the man and get him to eventually surrender. "It was definitely a team effort," Galloway Police Chief Donna Higbee told BreakingAC. Police on scene were from Galloway, Egg Harbor and Hamilton townships, along with members from the Atlantic County SWAT team and detectives from the Atlantic County P ro s e c u to r ' s Office. Civilians were cleared from the area, and police were able to contain the man to the parking lot. One person on the scene said he was

heard threatening to harm himself but not others. The "emotionally disturbed" man was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for evaluation. "Hopefully he will get the help he needs moving forward," Higbee said.

"We never take pleasure in seeing someone in such distress." He was given summonses for unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

State troopers resuscitate man at Atlantic City airport

wo state troopers helped save a man at Atlantic City International Airport earlier this week. The State Police were called to Gate 5 at 12:17 p.m. Monday for an unattended bag. When the owner was identified, they were told that a man had collapsed near Gate 6, police said. When they arrived, the man was not breathing and had no pulse, according to the report. Trooper Michael Sitarik, of the Airport Station, immediately began performing CPR on the man while Trooper Scott Stickel, of the Canine Response and Training Unit, retrieved a nearby automated external difibrillator, police said.

The two worked together and — after several cycles of CPR and two additional shocks — the man was resusciated. AtlantiCare Paramedics, NJANG 177th Fight Wing EMS and Atlantic City Airport EMS arrived shortly after the call and continued to provide first aid, according to the report. The victim was then transported by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional

Video released in ex-Linwood teacher's alleged chair-kicking incident

By Lynda Cohen

V

ideo at the center of a now-overturned conviction of a Linwood teacher has been released. Kimberly Peschi was first convicted of simple assault in the 2017 incident at Belhaven Middle School. But Superior Court Judge John Rauh overturned it last month. BreakingAC received a copy of the video after a records request to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. The video, which was taken during lunch period at the school Feb. 9, 2017, blurs out most of the screen to protect the minor's identities. It shows Peschi walking toward the student, seen rocking back in his chair. She then appears to pick up her

right leg and use it to pull down on the back of the chair. She does not appear to use her arms at all. She then stands over the student as he gets to his knees and then gets up. Peschi walks around to the other side of the table, and then appears to address the students there briefly. She then walks aw ay, shrugging toward another teacher as she continues out. The b oy 's mother, Michele Tourigian, was shocked as she watched the released video for the first time as she spoke with BreakingAC. "I feel that Judge Rauh did a disservice to the children of Linwood and this video clearly shows the intentions of Ms. Peschi without a shadow of a doubt," said Tourigian, who herself was a teacher.

"It is difficult, as a mother and a teacher of 25 years to watch, but I am glad that the public has a chance to see what took place and what my son has endured over the past 2½ years," she said. Peschi was convic ted by Judge Timothy Maguire in May 2018, in a trial that lasted several days spread out over months. It was conducted in Nor thf ield Municipal Court, even though it was tried by Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. As a result, she lost her job and was forced to surrender her teaching license. But, a year later, Rauh overturned the conviction, clearing the way for her license to be restored. He said that the video was not

clear enough to show intent. Peschi had testified that she was trying to right the chair. “I would never intentionally hurt a child, ” she said at trial in March 2018. “I play it over in my head every single day for a year and a month. This happened in six seconds. I just reacted. Sorry.” HOW VIDEO WAS RELEASED While the request was denied under the Open Public Records Act, it was made public under a "common law" request. The response from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office explaining the reason for its release included that: "1) this video was n exhibit entered into evidence, so it has already been made part of the record during the course of the trial, 2) this matter has been a source of significant public interest and speculation, 3) the press generally has an interest in reporting on the conduct of public officials and members of the government. Jersey Shore Bridge Walk to End Gun Violence

cean City’s 9th Street Bridge was bathed in orange lighting as 250 activists completed the Jersey Shore Bridge Walk to End Gun Violence last Saturday evening. They had gathered to show unity with communities nationwide who believe we can and must solve the problem of gun violence in America. The event was the culmination of a weekend of activities throughout the country, recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 7th. The event was organized by the Atlantic/Cape May Local of

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America as part of a national movement, Wear Orange Weekend. The City of Ocean City agreed to light the bridge and causeway orange for the entire weekend providing an opportunity to raise awareness about gun violence in America. The Bridge has been chosen as the annual event site as it connects Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Walkers included survivors of gun violence, activists, and members of Moms Demand Action local groups. Prior to the walk the group gathered for several shor t

children and schools,” said Yunghans. “Most schools in NJ have monthly safety drills where we are asked to take our children into a closet or corner of the classroom and hide while pretending there is an active shooter in our school. Our children will grow up with this memory while hoping and praying that day never comes. It is a real threat that has happened in too many schools and other public places, including movie theaters, concert venues, malls, and houses of worship.” Yunghans related how she came to understand the impact on those who experience gunfire in our cities. “It became clear to me when the brave teens of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School brought inner city youth on stage with them at the March for our Lives in Washington, DC. People who live in our cities must deal with gun violence every day.” The color orange has a long and proud history in the gun safety movement. Safe Returns: How to Release a Fish

earning how to fish involves more than catching fish. At some point, all anglers will be faced with the need to return fish they are not allowed to keep to the water, due to size, season, creel limits, or local catch-and-release fishing regulations. Mastering the task of fish release by following the steps in this section will give you con-

fidence that you know how to release fish in a way to protect fish populations for future generations of anglers. You might be asking yourself, "What’s the best way to handle fish to ensure they survive release?" Whether or not they do largely depends on the angler. Learning how to release fish from a hook takes practice in general. Understanding how to handle fish and how

to release fish in a conservation-friendly manner are the first few steps you can take to help promote fishing conservation. ●● Use wet hands when handling a fish or a knotless rubberized landing nets (and rubberized - not cotton- gloves if you must wear gloves). This helps maintain the slime coat on the fish, which protects it from infection and aids in swimming. Anglers that know how to practice proper catch and release never use a towel of any kind when handling fish since a towel can remove this slime coat. ●● Hold the fish horizontally whenever possible since this is the way fish naturally swim through the water. Do not drop the fish onto hard surfaces! ●● Keep your fingers away from the gills and eyes of the fish. ●● If needed, use a release tool

(dehookers, recompression tools) to minimize handling. Time is of the essence! Release fish as soon as practical and do not keep them out of the water longer than necessary. Try to release your fish gently head first into the water, which helps push water through the mouth and over the gills, and helps to resuscitate the fish. Revive exhausted fish by placing the fish in the water, facing the current if possible, with one hand underneath the belly and the other hand holding the bottom lip or tail. Know the current fishing regulations that apply to the state where you are fishing and learn how to accurately measure fish in order to abide by the regulations. By following fishing regulations you are building and conserving our state fish populations for future generations of anglers.

ed to dig into our archives and produce a live show that captures some of the show’s more memorable moments,” Glassey says. “ We’re excited to introduce it in our own backyard. It’s where we produced most of our shows for an audience that watched them on local, regional and nationally syndicated stations.” In print and on television and radio, Spatz has been covering Atlantic City entertainment since Day One of the casino era in 1978. Although he left the staff of The Press of Atlantic City in 1997 after a 22-year run to focus on television, he continues to write an entertainment column for the paper’s weekend section, At The Shore. He also hosts the daily talk show “Midday” from

noon to 2 p.m. on NewsTalk 1400 WOND-AM. D uring “ Rubbing El bows,” Spatz will set up each video with a quick explanation of what the audience will see. Following the video, he’ll share candid moments he experienced with the stars that weren’t captured by the cameras. “ In some cases,” Spat z says , “ the bes t stuff happened after the lights were off and the camera s were packed away. Ver y few people have heard those stories, and some of them were just as fascinating as the conversation we’d just recorded. ‘Rubbing Elbows’ is as nostalgic as it is entertaining. We’re taking our audience on stage, backstage and behind the scenes for moments most people never see.”
