Hurricane Season is Here Weather with Noreaster Nick

I

t's that time of the year again.

Hurricane season officially arrived on June 1.

I know it can be a scary time for us - especially with the images of Hurricane Sandy still fresh in our minds. But as long as you're prepared and informed, the process of dealing with tropical systems is easier.

The one thing I must stress to everyone reading this is the importance of having a plan of action in place that the whole family knows and understands.

Know where the coastal evacuation routes are.

Know where to get your up-to-

date weather information.

Know where your office of emergency management is located.

Know who is in charge of your city's emergency plan.

And have a kit prepared that has candles, batteries, flashlights, medicine and other supplies that will help in the event of an emergency.

I'm not expecting a wild hurricane season in terms of the number of named storms because El Nino is developing in the Pacific, and that will help keep the numbers down. But keep in mind; it only takes one storm to cause devastation. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30. Stay in the know!

Looking Ahead to a Rosie Future Letter from the editor

W

hen I was a child in the 1970s I loved watching television on a Saturday morning. Somehow I managed to find my entertainment from three to four channels.

Today's kids have between 40 and 400 channels to choose from, not including On Demand, Netflix and YouTube.

"The Jetsons" was my favorite show. It was a cartoon about a futuristic family that had flying cars and a robot that cooked and cleaned up after them. Even as an adult I fantasized about the Jetsons' house-cleaning robot named "Rosie" tidying up my house.

In light of that dream, when I received a robotic vacuum cleaner for my birthday, we jokingly named it Rosie. She was a dream come true initially. But we quickly saw that she would get stuck or jammed.

Somehow Rosie, my automatic vacuum, always needed human assistance. The dirt bin quickly filled up with dog hair and had

to be emptied. She ate a few socks and "got sick." When she went missing, we had to rescue her from under the couch. I have to admit, though, it was amusing to see my dog's reaction to her.

Like all the other automated things popping up in our world, from the grocery store checkout to the banks downsizing to drive-through ATMs, without people behind the scenes to help when it got stuck, it was of no value.

Last week on the “Shore Local Live” radio show we had the pleasure of interviewing some high school and middle school students who recently competed in a worldwide STEM competition.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. These students from Egg Harbor Township, Linwood and Galloway competed at the highest level.

The Egg Harbor Township PAL (Police Athletic League) offers a phenomenal opportunity for students throughout our area to participate and compete in this.

Nationally, STEM and robotics competitions are gaining momentum and may soon be recognized as a high school sport.

The skills students can learn including teamwork, collaboration and problem solving are the same as those learned in other sports. However, unlike most sports, robotics provides all students an opportuni-

ty, regardless of their physical ability.

With Embry Riddle University helping Atlantic County develop an aviation maintenance academy, more high school students than ever will be given the opportunity to explore careers in technology and engineering.

We all have that one “techy” friend that we take our questions, problems and glitches to for advice. In this age of computer everything, the "tech" person is usually the most popular in a room.

Sure, good looks, people skills and athletic prowess are admirable, but the tech person is downright useful.

If you are like me, you didn't have the advantage of growing up with computers or computer classes in school. We are the "learn as we go" generation that is forever playing catchup and often learning from our kids.

We have done pretty well, though, my friends. Just imagine how far these young computer programmers and engineers are going to take us into the future. George Jetson would be proud.

T

he Renault Winery is one of the many historical gems in our great state of New Jersey.

The business opened in 1864 when renowned French vintner, or winemaker, Louis Nicholas Renault moved from the Duke of Montebello’s champagne house in Rheims, France, and settled in Egg Harbor City. Once there, Renault took his mastery of winemaking and created the iconic winery that is still around today.

The Renault Winery has since become more than just an historic vineyard and winery; straddling the border between Egg Harbor City

and Galloway, it is now a world class resort that includes the Château Hotel, House of Renault Restaurant, Renault Winery and Champagne House, and Vineyard National Golf Course. Now under new management, the Renault Winery has many exciting projects coming to fruition this year.

Vivamee Hospitality recently took over Renault Winery and is looking to take the property to new heights while remaining true to Louis Renault’s original vision. Josh McCallen, CEO and president of Vivamee Hospitality, along with his

wife and partner, Melanie McCallen, are excited for this revival.

“We get to lead a team of the best hospitality pros in the business” Josh McCallen explained.

Some long-time employees of Renault Winery are also excited to see Vivamee come in and bring Renault back to its original beauty and full potential.

Kevin McCarty, the assistant general manager of Renault Winery, has worked at Renault for 27 years.

He started out as a busboy and has been there through all the ups and downs of the business. McCarty said business was declining until Josh, Melanie, and the Vivamee family stepped in to take over the resort.

An Amazing Time At Mainland’s After Prom

ainland Regional High School students kicked off their high heels, sequined gowns, and stylish tuxedos and headed to After Prom, Saturday, June 1st. This year’s

theme, “The Amazing Race”, was a feast for the eyes and took students to various countries throughout the world, all within the unrecognizable halls of their own school. Each corridor led them to a new, creatively displayed country, eventually taking them to their gymnasium where

students could play games and win prizes.

Parents and volunteers work tirelessly beginning in July and throughout the school year planning the event and hand-painting decorations. Dedicated parents stay up through the night to run the games and stations at the event.

After Prom is in its 26th year, providing students with a fun-filled, drug and alcohol-free night that lasts from 11 p.m. - 4 a.m. Students willingly get involved with playing games, knowing the payoffs are huge. This year’s prizes included: a surfboard, GoPro, Twenty One Pilots tickets, Shawn Mendes tickets, and a foot-

ball signed by Eagles defensive end, Brandon Graham.

In addition to games, students could attempt to ride a mechanical bull, grab money in the money machine, visit the hypnotist or masseuse, or play team laser tag—all while rocking out to the tunes of the “Isn’t It Always” band. Food was served in “England” (their former cafeteria transformed into a red and black British Caff) complete with Big Ben, a classic red telephone box, and the Queen’s Guard.

Donations from the community and local businesses are invaluable to the success of the After Prom.

in all different forms to make it a safe, fun memory for students. Chairperson Danielle Kelly and her husband Ken Kelly have worked tirelessly with friends Sharon Ianoale and Mary Sundra for over 12 years on After Prom, and are grateful for the countless volunteers that work alongside of them. The group will barely take a

ince I was a kid, family game night has always been a vital aspect of home life. We would share snacks and laughs all evening long while learning new educational and life skills. With all of the winter holidays behind us and cold weather settling in our region, a lull of outdoor activities is apparent. That means time to break out the chess board or your favorite board game and get ready for an evening of family fun!

While board games have been the topic of many scientific and developmental studies, they have been researched for more than a century by psychologists. Playing board games with young children can be proven beneficial for early brain development. Those that play board games can learn all important life and education skills such as math, problem solving, decision making. It

can also help improve memory and emotions.

There are three basic types of games: skill and strategy, chance and some involve both.

The great thing about board games you can play them almost anywhere. Most board games are versatile and do not require electricity. They can become excellent boredom breakers if you end up losing power at home, get stuck at the airport or go on a camping expedition. Even a simple game of tictac-toe will pass the time at a doctor’s appointment.

Some of the simplest of games can teach children patterns, sequences, numbers and color and shape identification. Kids can also learn about basic direction, taking turns and socializing with others. An easy game of checkers can enhance one’s ability to solve problems, communicate and resolve conflict.

Players will also learn the practice

of sportsmanship and losing gracefully to their opponent.

Many anthropologists agree that some classic and modern games are based on the dynamics of war.

Scenarios such as two or more side squaring off, trying to win a race,

racking up points and for taking the other players territory are provided as examples. Games like Battleship can produce a feeling of satisfaction.

Games offer relaxation from the chaotic environment that surrounds us. Being focused on the board is a welcome respite from the outside world and daily life, and allows play-

ers a chance to engage in personal interaction, providing a much-needed break from the glow of our cell phones and computer screens.

Science professionals have warned us that the “blue light” emitted from popular electronic devices can interfere with sleep patterns. So, playing a long round of Monopoly or several hands of cards may produce a more restful sleep.

Family game night has been a staple in our household for decades.

Quality time with siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family has always spurred fun conversations and stories. It’s a great way to create warm memories that will last for generations to come.

As adults, we are reminded constantly to make more time for play. In today’s society, games are developed on every skill level and just about every subject of interest. It can be as simple as a card game of War to something more complex like Settlers of Catan (a family favorite). So, while the cold winter weather has us housebound, turn off your TV, break out your favorite snacks and choose an evening of entertainment for family and friends to enjoy.

Star of Broadway’s ‘Frozen’ to Perform With Pops And Join Night in Venice Boat Parade

he star of the Broadway version of Disney’s “Frozen” will be the featured performer for a special Ocean City Pops concert July 14 at the Ocean City Music Pier.

Caissie Levy, who is currently starring as Elsa in the stage production of “Frozen,” also will join Chubby Checker and Kate Flannery as a special guest in the 65th annual Night in Venice boat parade on July 13. Tickets are on sale now for Levy’s show, and registration is open for anybody who would like to participate in Night in Venice as part of the boat parade or home decorating contest.

Levy also has performed on Broadway in “Les Miserables,” “Wicked,” “Hairspray” and “Rent.” She headlined Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops and backed up Rod Stewart during his Las Vegas residency. Her voice can be heard on the cast recordings of “Frozen,” “Ghost,” “Hair,” “First Daughter Suite” and more than 20 singer/songwriter albums, including her own EP, “With You.” This show replaces the Patina Miller show that was canceled last week due to a scheduling conflict for Miller. The Levy show is 7:30 p.m. July 14. Tickets are $45 to $55.

Plans for a festive 65th anniversary celebration of Ocean City’s premier summer event, Night in Venice, are in the works.

The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest are a highlight of the season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bay, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. A fireworks display caps off the bayfront festivities at the conclusion of the parade.

The parade this year starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. The “Celebrate! 65 Years of Night in Venice” theme is optional but offers a chance to reminisce about favorite Night in Venice memories through the years.

he City ofSomers Point announces the fourth annual ‘Art in the Park’ event on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at John F. Kennedy Park on Broadway Avenue in Somers Point.

Art in the Park features the work of a number of local and regional, professional and amateur artists for exhibit and sale. It is also an opportunity for artists to paint en plein aire (on site). t the 7th Street Surf Shop staff actually do surf, and love the beach lifestyle yearround.

Whether you are a frequent visitor to Ocean City or a local, odds are you have heard of and/or visited Ocean City’s iconic surf store. Now with four locations on Asbury Avenue and the Boardwalk, the 7th Street Surf Shop has long been a hub for surfers of all ages.

But it's much more than just a store for surfers. The 7th Street Surf Shop carries merchandise and apparel for people of all ages, even those who have never attempted to ride a wave.

A visit to their website, 7thstreetsurfshop.com, will immerse you in the “7th Street Lifestyle” with images and Instagram posts of the staff in action, plus a selection of original apparel for men, women, and children as well as clothes from popular brands. Clothes range from tank tops, shorts, and bathing suits for the summer months to sweatshirts and sweatpants for cooler weather.

Every person behind the counter is an experienced surfer and they are

The camps and lessons are run and taught by the employees of the Surf Shop.

Farm to Table Kids Cooking Classes

his month marks two years that I have been teaching cooking classes with my friend Shara Gadomski from Happy Heart Corner. Over the years we have taught classes to a variety of ages and in different locations. My favorite classes that we teach are kids farm to table classes.

This week we are kicking off our summer schedule of farm to table classes at B&B Farms in Egg Harbor City and I couldn’t be more excited.

There is so much value in teaching kids how to cook. In an age of childhood obesity in which junk food is

advertised everywhere and kids are attached to screens, we want to teach them healthy habits and how to make good food choices.

Teaching kids how to eat well is a good starting place. No matter what age, many lessons can be learned in the kitchen. I have found that my children and more likely to eat food at a meal if they have helped prepare it.

Having kids visit a farm or grow their own is so powerful. It gives them a deeper appreciation for where food comes from and who grows it.

At our farm to table classes, farmers Jen and Ryan LaMonaca speak to the children about farming and the kinds of food that is grown there.

This always has a big impact on the kids as they make connections between the people growing the food and what ends up on their plates.

So what can a child expect from a farm to table class experience? Good food of course! We teach these classes from June through August and the recipes are always different because we cook seasonally depending on what is available. At this week’s cooking class we will have strawberries, kale, arugula and spinach available. Most kids I know love strawberries but maybe your kids have never tried some of the greens or don’t think they like them. One of my favorite parts of cooking classes is when kids tell me they didn’t think they like a food until they tried it the way we prepared it.

One of the recipes we will be preparing this week is an apple and arugula pizza. I think when it comes to cooking with kids, it’s important to keep the recipes familiar for them while pushing them a bit to try new things. Pizza is very familiar to kids but topping it with arugula and adding apples is probably a combination they have never tried. My kids love this pizza and I’m confident that it will be a big hit at the class.

Gearing Up For A Terrific Summer!

U

sually when I’m putting my thoughts together and preparing to sit down to write my column, I turn in one or two directions. I either am drawn to what’s going on around me (things in the news, people I observe) or circumstances in my own life.

That’s pretty much where most of what I write about comes from.

As I was preparing for this weeks column, I looked at my calendar. It’s the first week of June already and that brought all kinds of thoughts to mind. I’m not the kind of person to rush things, but I know from past experience how fast the summer flies. June 1st one day and Labor Day weekend the next. I’m not drawing attention to this to depress those of you who live for this season. Instead, to stick to the theme, I’m kind of throwing a cold bucket of salty ocean water in your direction to get your attention.

My family went to the beach this past weekend for the first time this season. As we sat enjoying the cool breeze and soaking up the sun, my wife said, “We need to be intentional about doing this on a regular basis.”

And she’s right. There are thousands upon thousands of people who spend

their hard earned money and travel to our region for one or two weeks a year to experience what many of us have in our own backyard. But whether it’s the beach, spending time strolling the boardwalk, setting aside time to read your favorite book or whatever gives you pleasure and relaxation; you have to be intentional.

In my column back at the beginning of this year I wrote about the importance of intentionality. But it’s a good idea to remind ourselves of this on a regular basis. I don’t know about you, but for me being intentional means purposely carving out time on a family calendar. You may be different, but if I don’t make the time, the time will simply slip away.

It doesn’t happen because I set out in that direction, it just happens as one week slips into the next and the next.

So, whether it’s just you, you and a significant other or your entire family, sit down and set out your summertime priorities. If it’s more than just you, include everyone in the plans.

Ask the question: What is it you want to experience most this summer? It may surprise you the answers you get. It will not only be fun, but set you on a course for a terrific summer season at the Jersey Shore.

Whelan’s Whales Giving Atlantic City Kids Their Fins

wimming is a skill that people often take for granted. It may come as a shock to some that many children do not know how to swim or safely navigate out of a water emergency.

This an especially vital skill to have in our area because we live so close to the Atlantic Ocean, which often produces deadly rip currents. Whether in the ocean or in pools, lakes or rivers, it is important that kids to have their summer fun, as long as they are well-prepared and know how to be safe.

Green Whales Inc., a local nonprofit, funds and helps operate Whelan’s Whales along with the Brigantine Aquatic Center. The goal of Whel-

an’s Whales is to provide free swimming lessons to Atlantic City kids of all ages.

The program was named in memory of Jim Whelan, former s t ate senator and Atlantic City mayor who died in August of 2017.

Whelan was also a former Atlantic City Beach Patrol captain and an avid swimmer who loved to teach children how to swim.

In his memory, Whelan’s Whales became the official name of the program as this was a cause he firmly believed in.

“We started back in 2017 and now have around 400 kids in our program,” said Sari Carroll, the program director for Whelan’s Whales.

The program is still young but there has already been an amazing turnout the past two years.

The initial seven-week trial period back in 2017 saw the Brigantine Aquatic Center teaching 130 Atlantic City children basic water safety and swimming techniques.

“We really want the kids to build endurance in the water,” explained Carroll.

Water safety and swimming techniques are vital, however, having endurance is what will save your life in a water emergency.

Whelan’s Whales has seen unbelievable progress in these young children with some even taking an interest in swimming.

The kids in the program meet once a week at one of two practices held at the Martin Luther King School pool complex in Atlantic City. The instructors are mostly volunteers from the Brigantine Aquatic Center. The kids who have shown progress and a liking to swimming will often come

back for second practice during the week.

Often the children are understandably hesitant to get into the water for the first time, but the instructor’ goal is to instill confidence.

Some of the kids who attend the program are the first in their families to learn how to swim.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are about 4,000 drowning fatalities per year in the United States with 1 in 5 being children 14 and younger.

The Whelan’s Whales program is being proactive teaching kids in our area the skill of swimming as early in their lives as possible so they are both prepared and also able to have fun in the water.

Your Comfort Zone is a Dangerous Place

icture this. You’re waking up without the alarm, at a time that your body is ready. The room temperature is just right. The bed is the perfect mix of soft and firm, there’s a slight breeze coming in the window and everything is perfect. You could truly and honestly stay there forever.

That, my friends, is a dangerous place we like to call a comfort zone. It is somewhere you are safe, it feels incredible, you’re happy to be there and you want to stay, but there’s just one problem with that scenario. How much life can you live, and how many goals can you achieve from the safety of your cozy bed?

I’ll go ahead and let you know, the answer to that is... NONE.

“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”

You see, comfort zones make us feel awesome. They’re full of fluffy pillows and blankets, and the waters in a comfort zone are calm.

But they don’t produce growth.

If a ship spent its life in the harbor, why on earth is it even a ship?

It was built to sail, to explore the unknown waters. It was created to adjust with the wind and carry on through the tossing and turning that comes with the journey of going from one port to the next.

A ship was made to do more than just stay in one place. You, me, all of us were created with a calling and a purpose that is going to require us to leave our comfort zones. It’s not smooth, and it is not easy by any means. Everything in our nature will tell us not to do it and to just return to what we know because we gravitate to the path of least resistance.

I don’t know what your struggle is and I don’t know where you are having a hard time going, but I know personally that I have struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember.

Some ways my anxieties sur-

face involves my ability, or lack thereof, to talk in front of people (even small groups of people). On the flip side, one of my aspirations in life involves a lot of public speaking.

Me. The girl who gets a red face when anyone even mentions standing up in front of people... the one who has to write her name down on paper when making a phone call so I don’t forget to tell them who I am (I really wish I were joking).

Heck, I almost passed out at my own wedding and that was a room full of people I know and love.

This goal and this dream of mine will never be achieved if I don’t do a lot of hard things to get past the point that I am currently comfortable in life. Chasing this dream means I have to make the decision that my goal matters enough to push through the limiting beliefs and thoughts in my mind that are telling me I can’t.

They say, “you’d be better if you‘d stay in your comfort zone where it’s safe in a place where you know no one is judging you and you won’t see failure.” And guess what? If I let them, they will win and that will be my fate.

Make the decision now. It doesn’t have to be a big monumental leap into the unknown, although it might feel that way. Start small.

Reflect on what goals and dreams you have in life, and think about what areas of your life you would consider to be a comfort zone.

Little by little, and day by day, make it a habit to do something to expand the limits of that zone.

Do things that require you to step outside of the familiar territory and into the unknown that will lead you to where you currently only dream of being.

If you keep doing these small actions every day, inching closer and closer, before you know it you’ll look around and realize you left the safety of your harbor a long time ago. It will be nowhere in sight, and you won’t miss it one bit.

EHT High diving coach pleads not guilty in child pornography case

suspended high school diving coach and teacher's aide pleaded not guilty to child pornography charges

Tuesday.

Mark Balesteri Jr., 29, is accused of having more than 1,000 images of child sexual abuse.

He allegedly described himself as a pedophile to investigators and said he is attracted to girls who are about 13 or 14 — about the age of the young girls he was around as a diving coach at Egg Harbor Township High School.

The state's offer is currently a five-year sentence where Balesteri would have to serve the full five years, his attorney, Tina Islam, told

the judge.

The case is Megan's Law eligible, so the sentence would include registering as a sex offender and lifetime supervision.

Once the case gets to pretrial conference, the offer goes up significantly, Assistant Prosecutor Erika Halayko told Judge Benjamin Podolnick, as she handed him the offer sheet.

"Yes, it does," he said looking at it, but giving no indication of the next step.

Islam declined comm ent af ter court, but the lead attorney in the case, Steven Scheffler, said that they are still receiving evidence in the case.

After they receive all the discovery, a decision will be made whether to resolve the case or move forward, he told BreakingAC. Balesteri was released following a detention hearing before

Superior Court Judge Patricia Wild, who denied the state's motion to keep him jailed until trial.

The conditions of his release include that he have no access to social media and no contact with anyone

younger than 18, unless it's a relative.

Plea sant ville High School Principal Edward Bonek was also scheduled to be before Podolnick on Tuesday, but that was postponed.

H e faces similar charges, but was ordered detained at a hearing before Podolnick in August, calling him a “danger to the community,” and saying he was concerned that there was no way to make sure Bonek would not access illegal images again.

Attorneys John Zarych and Brenden Shur appealed Podolnick’s decision, but were denied.

He was moved out of the Atlantic County Justice Facility in August, and is currently housed in Cape May County.

AC man charged with New Year's Day killing

Family needs help finding missing man

T

he family of an Atlantic City man missing for a month is hoping the public can hep.

Justin Rabb Jr., 23, suffers from mental illness and has not been at his mother’s residence for a month, said Shanay McKiver Brown.

He was last seen at about 9 p.m.

May 9 at the Community Baptist Church in Atlantic City.

Rabb was last seen wearing a blue jacket, goldish cargo jeans and all black Nike Air Jordans with white trim around the swoosh.

McKiver Brown said her son may have more facial hair than in pictures she released of him, and could be in need of a haircut.

Anyone with information is asked to call Atlantic City police at 609-347-5766.

Jamie Sewell, 53, was arrested Friday in the shooting of Lamir King, who was found dead inside his Honda Civic at about 6:25 p.m. Jan. 1, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.

He would have turned 22 eight days later.

Surveillance video links an Atlantic City man to a New Year’s Day killing, according to the affidavit obtained by BreakingAC. Video footage from the area shows the Civic parked at Lincoln Avenue, and then a man approaches the driver’s side on foot.

The suspect appears to take out a handgun with his left hand, and shoots at the victim, the investigator’s statement reads.

King’s Civic then rolled into the intersection at Ohio Avenue, where he was found.

The shooter then walks away. An apparent limp is evident, which matches with other video of Sewell walking,

according to the statement.

Sewell has admitted to being left-handed and “pigeon toed,” but told police he was at the rear of his residence in the 1500 block of North Westminster Place at the time of the shooting.

Surveillance video contradicts that, the statement reads.

Additional video shows Sewell leaving his home at about 5:40 p.m., and returning 50 minutes later.

“Therefore, Sewell had the opportunity to commit the crime given the geography of the neighborhood and other video coverage,” the statement reads.

Clothing matching that of the shooter and of Sewell in other video from that day was found in his home Jan. 25.

Google data from his cell phone also matches the times and locations of the shooter, the investigation found.

Sewell’s charges are the result of a five-month investigation by Atlantic City police and members of the Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, Tyner said.

Sewell is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where he is expected to remain following a detention hearing before Superior Court Judge Benjamin Podolnick.

Known as Sav to many, King loved family, sneakers and money, those who knew him said.

He wanted to have success, and possibly own a business, although he was undecided on what that would be.

Laquille King, 25, said he and his brother had been talking about a restaurant.

“I would have been the one to watch the door,” Smith joked at a vigil days after the killing, “because I can’t cook.”

Garden Talks Series At The Acua Community Garden In Egg Harbor Township

xperienced and beginning gardeners alike are welcomed to participate in the next “Garden Talk” of the season on Tuesday, Tuesday, June 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

During the June 11 Garden Talk, Master Gardener Coordinator Belinda Chester will share information on square foot gardening; a method of maximizing planting space to successfully grow vegetables in small spaces. This talk will be more than a discussion, the method will be demonstrated in a garden bed at the ACUA’s Community Garden, giving participants real experience in how to get the most out of available garden space.

Garden Talks are hosted at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) in Egg Harbor Township. These talks are held in partnership with the

The Beatles Take Atlantic City

to Barder Airfield. From the airfield they drove to a hotel outside Cape May. Around 2:15 pm the next day The Beatles took a fish truck to the Atlantic City. They arrived at the LaFayette on North Caro-

ugust 30th 1964, the day that The Beatles broke Atlantic City.

In the early morning word got out across the city that The Beatles were coming to town. The source was from the band’s p romoter G eorge A. Hamid Jr. Hamid told a DJ that The Beatles were coming to Atlantic City by bus and staying at the Shelburne Hotel.

This news got to the city fast and locals raced towards the hotel to welcome the band and see them in the flesh for the first time. What they had not known was that The Beatles arrived in secrecy right behind their backs.

During the filming of “The Beatles Off the Record” McCartney was quoted in saying “John and I got this one written in Atlantic City during our last tour of the States. John does the guitar riff for this one, and George is on acoustic. Ringo bashes some timpani drums for the big noises you hear.”

waiting for the band to come out of their room on the 7th floor. It was not until 6 pm that fans were alerted that the doors to the show were opening at 8:30. In the blink of an eye the line was wrapping around the outside the Atlantic City Convention Hall. People of all ages (mostly teenagers) buzzed and looked in awe at the signs that read “The fabulous Beatles.” For fans in the South Jersey area this was a dream come true.

The doors opened promptly at 8:30 pm. Fans filled into every free spot. When the doors closed for the show there was 18,000 people in the Convention Hall.

The place made its capacity. The Beatles performed their standard 12-song set.

They were swaying, shaking, and dancing with the music. The crowd screamed throughout the whole set. Because it was so loud and crazy you could barely hear the songs that were being played. The

Beatles were also bombarded with the flash from thousands of cameras pointed towards them. With all of these distractions it is hard to believe that the band could do their whole set without failure. The set went on for about 30 minutes.

After the show The Beatles left the venue in a laundry truck, as their limousine would have given them away. Their show went down in history as one of the greatest last minute shows in Atlantic City.

Open House Brings Together Region’s Visual, Performing Artists

his Sunday, June 9, I will have the pleasure of curating an open house that will bring together artists from the shore, Philadelphia, and all over South Jersey.

The event, which we are calling The Arts and Music Open House, continues the presentation of a monthly arts and music vision that started with DJ’s Against Hunger, held at Ventnor Coffee during the holiday season of 2018. Since then, I have had the blessing of curating events that bring together artists, patrons and businesspeople to socialize and shine.

Sunday’s event will be our first at a family venue since the Ventnor Coffee program.

The Voorhees Art Center and Gallery is an amazing space, dedicated and welcoming to all artists. The Arts and Music Open House will take

place inside and outside of the gallery space and all indoors.

We are proud to announce that visual arts company Galica Graphics will have a display, as well as local artist India Summer and some other up-and-coming artists.

The father-and-son team of Demetrius and Bryce Bullock will be showcasing their art as well. The Bullocks will have a special exhibit of their award-winning comic book, “Daddy Long Legs and The Inch Worm.”

and old to live and fulfill their dreams of creating comics and storytelling.

The company BlackSci-FI.com is sponsoring an exhibit and will discuss how minority groups are making their voices heard in the world of science fiction and fantasy.

The Arts and Music Open House list of performers includes recording artists Canary, a graduate of CharterTech High School for the Performing Arts, and Michele Kumarroy, a veteran performer from Philadelphia.

In addition, we have a special drum and marching performance from the Boardwalk Seahawks Pathfinder/Adventurers Club and Drum Corps.

The day will also showcase award-winning poets and writers Hollingsworth, The Ambitious Poet, Nettie Long and Cinnmonday Braxton. We have some other surprises in store as well including a drawing for passes to Wizard World Philly.

The part of the open house that brings me the most joy is our artists’ lounge where anyone and everyone can grab a sketchbook or a canvas and create something right there at the event.

The Arts and Music Open House is scheduled for noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at The Voorhees Art Center

and Gallery located in the Voorhees Township Center. Admission and parking are free. All are welcome.

However, most corn is used for animal feed and fuel production.

A most concerning point I would like to share is that most corn has been genetically modified. While more research is needed, some studies suggest that modified crops may pose health risks to humans. This is really frightening. Corn is one of the most genetically modified crops in the world. An Enchanting Evening at Belhaven’s 8th Grade Dance

Eighth graders at Belhaven Middle School found their school transformed into a magical enchanted forest on Friday, May 31st. The eighth grade dance has become a rite of passage of sorts. Eighth graders dress to the nines for an evening of food, games, and dancing. They look forward to this event all year while parents and volunteers work for months to create a memorable night. Everyone knows in their heart that it’s a sign that middle school is ending and the new chapter called high school is about to begin.

This year’s dance theme, “Enchanted Forest”, featured a shimmering waterfall, a garden swing, and a magical unicorn. Students played

games to win prizes and no one went home empty-handed. Every year, the community comes together with generous donations of gift cards and other prizes from local businesses.

They also step to the plate with food and supplies for the party and big ticket items used to decorate.

Although parents put their all into the preparations for the highly anticipated night, once the lights go down, no parents are present. Belhaven’s

teachers generously chaperone the event, enjoying seeing their students dressed in their best and getting down to the music. It’s a much different atmosphere than the normal school day and students can let loose a little.

This year’s event was well-attended with 99% of the student body of 95 going. As in years past, one generous

family hosted a pre-party, inviting the entire class to their home. Another eighth grade family hosted an after-

New Absegami Principal Ready to Enhance Student Experience

I

t has been Daniel Kern’s goal since the beginning of his career to become a school administrator.

While he and his wife were packing for an early morning flight to Disney World with their two sons, and the family was preparing its last-minute checklist, Superintendent John Keenan of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District gave him a call.

It was the call that would help Kern attain his goal, as he was getting Keenan’s recommendation to be appointed the next principal of Absegami High School. It's a role he will begin on July 1.

Kern is taking on the position held

by Principal Jeri-Lynn Vernon, who has served as Absegami principal for 12 years. The hiring process took place spanned a few months, with each candidate meeting with the administration and student council before a recommendation was made by the superintendent.

“There were many qualified candidates for the position of Absegami principal. Mr. Kern's enthusiasm and passion for Absegami students set him far apart from others,” said Keenan in a press release. “We are confident Mr. Kern will build on the many positive programs already established within our district and we're especially excited for him to establish a strong connection with parents and community members.”

Kern has worked at Absegami as supervisor of guidance and career services. He also worked at Absegami’s sister school, Cedar Creek High School in Egg Harbor City. From his time in the district, Kern has a plan for how he can improve the experience for students at Absegami.

Absegami prides itself on the experience that each student receives.

That’s something that Kern wants to continue at Absegami, and he hopes to find ways to expand upon it.

“Throughout the last couple of years, we’ve been doing a good job of building a positive school environment and a positive school culture, and that’s definitely something that I want to build upon,” said Kern. “I definitely want to promote all the positive opportunities that students have available to them by coming to Absegami.”

“Our faculty and staff do a tremendous job of putting together opportunities for our students that not all of our student s take advantage of, so that’s something I want to promote as best as I can,” he added.

Kern said Absegami is located in a unique area with access to potential resources such as AtlantiCare, Atlantic City International Airport, and The FAA Technical Center. He believes that these resources could be used to create volunteer, internship, and mentorship opportunities for Absegami students, and would like to work on partnering with these organizations to better each student’s future.

“The more exposure we can give our students cross-curricularly, it gives them the opportunity to pick and choose where their niche is, and where they’ll be successful when they graduate,” said Kern.

Eric is a graduate of Rowan University, and has a passion for radio and journalism.

elcome to June…! Schools are about to let out for the summer. Our local shore towns will once again be jam packed every day, instead of just on the weekends. Sure, the restaurants are busier and it’s harder to find a parking spot sometimes, but all in all, a great time of year, if you ask me.

Since I last wrote, The Phillies have had to deal with a starting player’s off the field troubles. They have made a trade to bolster their lineup, and have been swept out of Los Angeles by the Dodgers. The Eagles continue their OTA work while their starting QB holds his charity softball event. The Sixers continue to wonder if their big name free agents will remain in Philly or depart for another city.

The Flyers can only look longingly at the two teams skating for the Stanley Cup. And, after three straight at home, the Atlantic City Blackjacks now hit the road for the entire month of June.

From the entertainment world, “Rocketman” is off to a good start, but it’s another classic performer at the top of the box office.

Also, remember I wrote about “Chernobyl”

on HBO a few weeks back? Wait until you hear the ratings for that program. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: ●● The Phillies were caught by surprise when outfielder David Odubel Herrera was arrested following a report of a domestic violence incident in Atlantic City on Memorial Day, according to police.

Herrera, 27, was taken into custody in his hotel room at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino without incident. He was charged with simple assault and released on a summons with a future court date. The victim, a 20-year-old female described as Herrera’s girlfriend, had “visible signs of injury to her arms and neck” after being assaulted by Herrera according to the police report. Herrera was placed on Administrative Leave by Major League Baseball, according to the Phillies. ●● Here’s hoping the Phillies take a strong stance on this as there is no excuse for hitting a woman. The team is following MLB protocol, and a lengthy suspension is probably forthcoming. Even if the Phillies ultimately release Herrera, they’d still have to pay him the remainder of his contract. In the meantime, they have traded for veteran Jay Bruce in order to add a left handed bat with some pop to the lineup.

Bruce joins the team in San Diego as the Phillies are fresh off getting swept by the Dodgers in Los Angeles. There’s a reason the Dodgers have the best record in baseball and after the series with the Phillies, only had SEVEN losses at home through 32 games at Dodger Stadium.

That could spell trouble for the Phillies if they meet up with the Dodgers in the postseason.

The Eagles are back together for another round of OTA’s, or Organized Team Activities. The workouts are voluntary, but most players show up. Notable by his absence so far is team leader Malcolm Jenkins, however he did make an appearance at Carson Wentz’s charity softball game.

It’s the second straight year Wentz has held a softball game to support his AO1 charity. Nearly 30 current Eagles showed up to support their QB as the offense beat the defense 17-16 at Citizens Bank Park. Even former Eagle Torrey Smith was there to support the cause.

In the NBA, the Warriors and Raptors are locked in an intense Finals. Meanwhile, the Sixers continue to wonder if Jimmy Butler or Tobias Harris will leave via free agency or stay with the team. To that end, they’re not only preparing for the June 20th NBA draft, they’re also drawing up contingency plans should Butler or Tobias leave.

It’s Boston & St. Louis skating for the Stanley Cup in the NHL and so far I love the matchup. It’s full of physical play and great goaltending. I love the game when it has hard hits and love it less when there’s no rough stuff. I’m pulling for former Flyers coach & player Craig Berube in this series. Of course, that’s easy when the opponent is Boston…!

he arrival of June means the return of a shore tradition as the LPGA Tour tees off on the hallowed links of the Seaview Bay Course in Galloway.

Past champions include Hall of Famers Nancy Lopez, Annika Sorenstam, Juli Inkster, Betsy King and Se Ri Pak. Anna Nordqvist won it in 2015 and 2016 and I.K. Kim in 2017.

Darling, You Smell Marvelous!

ardens should appeal to all of the senses. In addition to seeing flowers that are visually appealing, it’s an added pleasure to walk through a garden with lovely scents wafting through the air.

Recently, I purchased a yellow and blush pink rose called “Life of the Party”. It has a delicious sweet smell reminding me of old-fashioned roses.

Even though I know it will bloom better in full sun, I placed it in my shadier entryway so that its perfume will be one of the first things one can notice as they enter the garden. It’s like an appetizer to what lies ahead.

It’s interesting how certain smells evoke memories. Imagine planting a favorite flower from your grand-

mother’s garden. The scent alone will take you back to your childhood.

Wouldn’t it be fun to create those same fragrant memories for someone else?

Jasmine has an intoxicating scent that would be wonderful to enjoy as you pass under an arbor.

Gardenias have a similar but stronger smell due to larger white flowers.

Their hardiness zone (8-11) is just on the edge of ours here in South Jersey (zone 7). I’ve been surprised to have a gardenia survive in my garden a few years, but it definitely gets beat up in the winter. Gardenia is worth a splurge as an annual, but try heavy mulching in the fall to give it more of a chance to survive the winter. Topiaries of gardenias can

What a dramatic and fragrant entryway you could create by flanking your garden with these beauties.

Wisteria has the look and smell of a dream. Drive around Egg Harbor Township in early spring and it will be cascading wildly down trees everywhere. I’ve often stopped by the side of the road and picked a few to enjoy their seductive scent. A word of caution. They can be invasive. Imagine that same aggressive vine in your own yard. They are amazing hanging from an arbor, but be prepared for heavy pruning in your future.

Lilacs can woo you from the other side of the garden with their beautiful spring fragrance. Plant them in full sun, and prune immediately after flowering since they quickly set buds for the following year.

This time of year, honeysuckle is

on the good side of the love/ hate seesaw. They beautifully cover a fence and spread their far-reaching, sweet scent across a yard, helping you forget that later, you’ll go crazy controlling this invasive plant.

The scented garden really comes to life at night, beginning with four-o’clocks that open as daytime temperatures start to cool down. Soon after, evening primrose (that unfurls before your eyes), angels trumpet (datura), and moon flowers will join the evening party and open their flowers, releasing an intense and delicious scent.

Other plants like flowering tobacco (Nicotiana), petunias, and night phlox, bloom during the day but intensify their scent at night.

Plant your most fragrant bloomers in entryways and on the edges of your garden, so that you as you walk through, you will brush by them and release their scent.

After a long day, a stroll through the scented garden can whisk away the worries of the day. Close your eyes and take it in, and remember that your haven is your own backyard.

anglers tried their luck this last Saturday in the 21th Brutus Fluke Tournament. 27 fish were weighed in from 2.15 to 10.03 pounds.

The winners of the adult division were: • 1st Joey Rocks (Al’s son) on “Humdinger” 10.03 Lb. – 30.00 inches • 2nd Ralph Girard on the “Will Bill” 6.03 Lb. - 25.0 inches • 3rd Brian Will also on the “Will Bill” 5.84 Lb. - 24.75 inches The winner of the junior category (14 years & under) was: Gunner Elberson (on the Hunt N Gun II) who’s fish was 2.29 Lb. – 18.75 inches This category began in 2015 in an effort to get our youngsters involved this wonderful character building sport.

The division had 7 Anglers this year.

Bluefish (old Weakfish category) After 2 years of no one catching a Weakfish, the category was changed to Bluefish. The three year life of the weakfish category saw only one fish caught by Jim Boney in 2016.

The $100 Bluefish winner was: Charles Elwell off the “Poppa John” 1.96 Lb. Not a big blue but he still got over $50 a pound for it.

This year’s winner was the second largest fluke ever caught in the 21 years of the”Brutus Fluke Tournament”.

The winning angler “Joey Rocks” is the youngest son of the well known local angler Al Rocks. Someone on Al’s boat fishes into the prize money nearly every year.

The largest Fluke ever to win was a 12.05 Lb monster caught off of A.C. inlet by Bill Weeks.

It was a great contest this year. The tide was high a little early in the day so most fishing was done on the outgoing tide. Because the tourney was held on the 9th day of the Summer fluke season the fish ran larger than past years.
