an oh man, what a crazy week it has been weather-wise. I hope you all stayed safe and out of harm's way. Things will surely be a bit calmer going forward toward the weekend.

The reason we had so much severe weather this week is because we've had something called the "ring of fire" pattern gripping our region.

This happens when high pressure positions itself off the East Coast and winds come out of the southwest.

The pattern brings up the heat and humidity; it also allows storms to move through. That will ease for the weekend.

We've got a cold front that will push down from the northwest. It will bring some cooler, drier air with it. Expect temperatures in the lower 80s for the weekend with partly cloudy skies and maybe a passing storm on Sunday. Overall it’s looking decent.

Things will be not as hot next week, and more typical of early June, actually with temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s. That's good news.

All Things Strawberry

hat are the top three things that you l o o k fo rward to most in summer? For me it would probably be strawberries, blueberries and peaches.

Yes, I eat strawb er ries a n d blueberries all year round, but nothing beats the taste of freshly picked, locally grown strawberries. Last week B&B Farms opened their strawberry fields for people to pick their own and I urge you to take

advantage of this short window of opportunity.

Besides eating the rainbow (eating a variety of colors to ensure a good balance of nutrition), I also like to eat by seasons. What this means is that I look for foods that are in season when they taste the best. For strawberries, the time has arrived. B&B

MAPLE CHEESECAKE STUFFED STRAWBERRIES

I

have a confession that you might find completely ludicrous. Are you ready? Here it is…I’m not really a chocolate lover. There, I said it and you are

still reading. Sure I like chocolate occasionally, but I do not crave it and it would definitely not be my first choice on a dessert menu.

Given the choice of cheesecake, fruit crisp or chocolate cake, I almost always choose the fruit crisp. My second choice would be cheesecake. This recipe for maple cheesecake stuffed strawberries combines my love of fruit and cheesecake and is absolute perfection. Not only is it so quick to make, but no matter who I serve this to, adults and children love them. This has become my go-to treat when I’m invited to a gathering and if you make them once, they will become yours too.

We started making this recipe in our kids cooking classes last year and over time, the recipe has evolved.

Where we once used powdered sugar, we now use maple syrup, giving it a more pure taste. This recipe is ideal in summer when strawberries are in season, but if you can get good strawberries at the grocery store in the winter, give it a try.

Start with a pound of fresh strawberries. Using a paring knife, cut off a small part of the bottom of the strawberry so that it sits flat and then cut off the top. Scoop out a small hole in the top of each strawberry. It might feel awkward when you do the first one, but you will quickly get the hang of it.

Next make the filling by combining softened cream cheese, maple syrup, milk and vanilla extract. I use reduced fat cream cheese and milk which work great. You can use a food processor, hand mixer

or stand mixer for this.

Using a pastry bag or small plastic bag with a tip cut off, squeeze some of the cream cheese mixture into each strawberry. This is a very fun recipe to make with kids as they love this step.

To finish off the strawberries, sprinkle graham cracker crumbs on top or shaved chocolate. No mat ter how many I bring to a party, they are always gone within minutes so my word to the wise, make a lot! These are a perfect treat for Valentine’s Day or any day of the year!

Ingredients

1 lb. fresh strawberries, rinsed and patted dry 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 1 tablespoon milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs 1/4 cup shaved chocolate

Instructions

With a paring knife, cut off the strawberry stems. Cut around the inside of the strawberry, hollowing out slightly and creating a well for the cheesecake. (You can also do this with a small melon baller). Cut

off a small portion of the pointy strawberry tip, so that each strawberry can stand. Place each on a large baking sheet.

In a medium bowl, with a standing or handheld electric mixer, beat cream cheese, syrup, milk, and vanilla until fluffy, about 2 minutes on medium speed. Place mixture in a pastry bag and pipe into each strawberry, adding a little extra to the top.

You can also use a small sealable bag with a small tip cut off of a corner.

Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs and shaved chocolate on top of each stuffed strawberry.

Farms is one of the only farms in this area where you can pick your own, a wonderful activity to do with kids or even without kids. It is so important for kids to understand where food comes from and gain an appreciation for how it’s grown.

If you have gone strawberry picking and left with more strawberries than you know what to do with, here is some inspiration. Pie is my most favorite way to use strawberries.

Toss them with sugar, add to a homemade or store-bought crust and bake! If you want to get crazy and fancy, add some rhubarb and make a lattice topping. So maybe rhubarb and lattice are words that sound intimidating, there are plenty of other options for using your strawberry bounty. Add them to a smoothie with some frozen bananas, mango and vanilla yogurt. If your kids are addicted to ice pops like mine are, add strawberries to a blender along with milk and yogurt, freeze them in ice pop molds and you will have a healthy and delicious treat for any time of day (even breakfast!). If you are having company over and want to impress them, cheesecake filled strawberries is the way to go.

Ocean City Flower Show Celebrates 47th Year

his time of year often presents an array of colors in gardens everywhere. Flower shows are a great way for people to learn what type of flowers are most popular, get expert gardening advice and spark creativity.

This weekend, The Garden Club of Ocean City is presenting its 47th Annual Flower Show at the Music Pier. Founded in 1973, the Garden Club has taken a role in local horticulture and conservation projects. The club also takes an active role in supporting community programs. The club is also a member of the National Garden Club (NGC). The benefits of these organizations

include garden tours, horticulture photography and floral design workshop, all of which are shared during the Flower Show.

The Garden Club of Ocean City organizes the annual event.

Kathy Wheatcroft, President of the Garden Club, says it’s the cooperation between the organization and the city that keeps the show going strong.

“A lot of garden clubs don’t have the kind of support that we do. Without the help of the city and the Music Pier, we couldn’t do all that it takes to set the show up.”

The theme for this year’s Flower Show is “Celebrating the Holidays.” There will be artistic arrangements ranging from simple and elegant to elaborate and breathtaking.

Guests will have the opportunity to learn decorating tips as well as a variety of styles

to brighten your home for any special calendar date.

Attendees are welcomed to take part in a variety of activities throughout the threeday event. One encouraged activity will be taking place in the “Horticulture” area. You can bring your plants and cuttings from your gardens to decorate a window box for your home.

There will also be activities for children.

Also on display throughout the weekend, guests will be able to look at orchids.

Orchids only bloom once a year, typically during the summer. There are over 25,000 recorded orchid species in the entire world. Bonsai trees will also be showcased

throughout the weekend. These types of trees are special in that. In the Japanese language, the word bonsai is translated in as “tree in tray” because of its size. If properly cared for, a bonsai tree can live up to 800 years!

The annual Flower Show is a much anticipated event for the Garden Club. It gives the opportunity for visitors to see the finest specimens of our local horticulture and flowers, perennials, bulbs, and floral designs.

There will also be special educational exhibits and demonstrations on how to start your own herb garden. Experts and volunteers will be on hand throughout the weekend to assist you with any questions or concerns.

The Ocean City Flower Show takes place runs Friday, May 31st – Sunday, June 2nd. The show is free and open to all ages Friday from 2-9pm, Saturday 10am9pm and Sunday from 10am-4pm.

Dean Randazzo Prepares For His First 22.5-mile Race

A

The World-Famous Surfer Is Ready To Paddle For A Cause

TLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY – Dean Randazzo is known for racing down the face of a steep wave and shredding surfing competitions around the globe. Now, he is preparing to race around Absecon Island on a paddleboard for the 12th annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Paddle For A Cause.

His fierce, never-say-die determination earned him the moniker “The Jersey Devil” on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour. In 2008, while Randazzo was battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma for the fourth time, seven of his friends created the Paddle For A Cause - overcoming hurricane swells to paddle around Absecon Island to show their support for the local surfing legend.

In the past, Randazzo has supported the annual Paddle For A Cause either on the sidelines or participating the 4- and 8-mile social paddles. His lung capacity has diminished through his four bouts with cancer and many rounds of chemotherapy.

“Since my first round of treatment, I really couldn’t paddle around in the lineup like I used to,” Randazzo said. “I had to be more focused on strategy rather than just surfing all out.”

This year, The Jersey Devil is training like Rocky Balboa. Randazzo is preparing for the 12th Paddle For A Cause with daily cardio and weight training.

“I think I am finally ready,” said Randazzo. “I have been training for the last few months and I’m feeling stronger than ever.”

Mike May, a longtime friend and supporter of the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation, created a 22.5-mile course to force competitors to put in the mindset of someone who is fighting for their life. It’s to remind the paddlers that the event is to support people with cancer and the event is widely considered one of the most challenging paddleboard courses on the east coast.

“After about three hours you start questioning your ability, you start questioning the reason why you did this. It is a mental struggle,” said Paul Giunta.

The Somers Point resident is a past president and has raced in the paddle multiple times.

Though it’s been more than 10 years since his chemotherapy treatment, Randazzo is just now feeling up to the task.

“I guess I was thinking about Mike May when he told me about his idea for the paddle when I was in the hospital, he did it in honor of me and lately I’ve just gotten this undeniable feeling like I've got to do this paddle,” Randazzo said. “I’m fortunate to be here, no excuses. If it takes me eight hours, it takes me eight hours. I’m gonna finish it.”

Dean Randazzo is no stranger to competition having won the attention of the Association of Surfing Professionals during a stellar performance at the 1990 Cold Water Classic. Ascending international rankings, he qualified for the ASP World Championship Tour in 1996, the first New Jersey competitor to do so.

Dean Randazzo kneels on his paddleboard at the 11th annual Paddle For A Cause At the height of his career in 2001, Randazzo was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He struggled to reveal his diagnosis for fear he would lose the sponsorships that funded his career. At the U.S. Open of Surfing in 2001 in Huntington Beach, California he told the national media that he had cancer.

Dean received multiple bone marrow transplants from his brother Joe to help him battle through four rounds of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and climb back up the ranks of competitive surfing. His return to Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif. in April 2002, earned him third place, after placing second the previous year before his diagnosis. He won the Garden State Grudge Match in 2002, and again in 2007, and in 2004 Randazzo earned MVP at the X Games and won the Red Bull Icebreak.

Today Randazzo still surfs competitively on occasion but has taken to passing on his talents to

the next generation of surfers. In 2013 he opened Jersey Devil Surf Shop in Atlantic City along with his brother Joe and a group of investors.

Last year he created the Randazzo Surf School in North Wildwood, New Jersey, which offers training camps for kids and beginner and advanced lessons for surfers of all ages. When he isn’t hitting the waves he is selling houses for Dwell Real Estate.

The 12th annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Paddle For A Cause is a multiple course paddleboarding event being held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Frank S. Farley State Marina at Golden Nugget Atlantic City.

The marquee event is the 22.5-mile race around Absecon Island, which draws paddleboarding and rowing competitors from around the world and offers prizes for men’s and women’s prone and stand-up paddleboarding divisions. The course was designed to challenge racers as a reminder that they are helping people struggling with cancer.

All paddlers and virtual paddlers are required to fundraise $200 to participate with proceeds benefiting the foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides grants to financially assist people with cancer.

DOGGIE DIP AND BATHE TO SAVE ON SUNDAY

The Humane Society of Ocean City will hold a fundraiser 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 2 on the beach and boardwalk between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. The Doggie Dip and Bathe to Save will invite dogs to take a dip in the ocean and then wash off with a special truck providing water on the boardwalk.

The event provides a brief exception to the local ordinances that pro-

hibit dogs on the boardwalk and on the beach at this time of year. Entry is a $20 donation per dog, and a registration form is available at hsocnj. org/events.

Hometown Hero: Zach Katzen

H

ometown hero, Zach Katzen is deeply rooted in the culture of Atlantic City. Serving as the Program Director for the AC Arts Foundation and VP of Skate AC, Zach is incredibly well known throughout Atlantic City. However, anyone who knows Zach knows that it isn’t his accolades that make him great, but how he makes people feel. The arts foundation and Skate AC have given Zach a platform to continue to what he’s been doing his entire life - serving as a constant, a pillar, and a friend to the community in Atlantic City.

Growing up, Katzen’s mom worked as a social worker in Atlantic City while his father worked as a Stockton professor and drug counselor in Pleasantville. Having attended work with his mother of-

ten as a child, Zach began planting roots in AC at an early age. Throughout his youth, he recalls countless memories of hanging out at Ocean One mall, Alexander’s shoe store, and Crown Records. Many of the local business owners became lifelong friends of Katzen. He became a fixture of sorts in local music stores and barber shops throughout Atlantic City as someone who spent his time and resources supporting the small businesses in his community - not just monetarily but as someone who genuinely cared about the success of local businesses. He spent countless hours fishing in front of Hackney’s with his step father and going out deep sea fishing on Captain Applegate’s boat. Later in life when Zach became a father to his now college aged daughter, he took her to at least two concerts per month in Atlantic City while attending every House of Blues show that came to the city.

ach year, Shore Medical Center honors its staff during Hospital Week with a variety of events and offerings, but the most poignant of all is the annual Caregiver Recognition Dinner, which was held Tuesday, May 14 at Greate Bay Country Club. At the event, employees with milestone anniversaries were honored, as well as recipients of the annual Spirit of Shore Caregiver of the Year and Physician of the Year awards, the Chairman’s Awards for both clinical and non-clinical staff, and the DiOrio Award.

Shore President and CEO Ron Johnson presented the Caregiver of the Year Award to Access Management Registrar Deb Beall, of Egg Harbor Township, for her actions that exemplify the Planetree model of patient-centered care.

Johnson then presented the Physician of the Year award to Critical Care Medicine Physician Dr. Mario Christianto, of Cherry Hill, who “embodies everything in Shore’s mission of caring and respecting patients, their families and each other.”

Shore Medical Center Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Bray, DDS, presented the prestigious Chairman’s Award, which recognizes employees for their contributions and commitment to Shore in clinical and non-clinical areas.

This year’s Chairman’s Award, Non-Clinical was presented to Janice Boehler, manager of patient financial billing, of Barnegat, and Chairman’s Award, Clinical, was presented to Jessica Mankow, nurse manager of the Advanced Spine and Orthopedic Institute, of Egg Harbor Township.

Janet DiOrio Galante, daughter of the late Joseph DiOrio, presented the DiOrio Award to Fred Banner, chief information officer, of Marmora. The DiOrio Award was cre-

ated in 2014 to honor the individual who best embodies the ideals set forth by Joseph DiOrio, who in his five decades as a member of Shore’s Board of Trustees established an outstanding track record of service and always put the patients’ best interest first. Banner, through his work both within the hospital and in the Veteran community, has proven to be a dedicated, honorable, and loyal leader of strong character, who has been an advocate for Shore Medical Center through their tireless passion to our mission, vision and values.

"The Light"

Looking Forward to ‘Singin’ in the Rain Jr.’ and that ‘Glorious Feelin’

P2 will present its production of "Singin' in the Rain Jr." May 30-June 1 at the Dominick A. Potena Performing Arts Center in Margate.

The thought of this or any other production of this musical classic gets me excited because of my love of the Great American Songbook.

Two things that tend to shock people that don’t know me is that I enjoy science fiction and musical theater. So when I heard that MP2, formerly the Margate Players, was staging "Singin' In The Rain Jr." I got absolutely giddy with joy.

The play is an adaptation of the beloved 1952 film, which starred Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor as silent film stars adjusting to a “new” Hollywoodand its transition to “talking pictures.”

If you are younger than 35 years old

the topic from another time might sound a bit like the Flintstones to you. One can imagine an updated version exploring how Hollywood legends would feel being asked to act in films for Youtube, Amazon or Netflix. While these streaming platforms

are now winning major awards, there was a time when going “straight to video” was a major insult.

Whatever the premise, I do not watch musical theater or films expecting "Citizen Kane," or acting performances that will make me cry (although Judy Garland’s "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" in the film "Meet Me In St. Louis" always chokes me up).

I enjoy musicals for the music and the dancing.

I watch "Stormy Weather" to see Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers. I watch "The Muppet Movie" to sing "Rainbow Connection" with Kermit. I watch "The Wiz" to “Ease On Down The Road.”

Every time I see "Singin' in the Rain" I’m 10 years old again and glued to my TV trying to emulate those moves by Gene Kelly in that iconic scene of Kelly free whirling in a downpour. I can still hear my mother yelling from the kitchen, ”Raymond what you doing in the living room?”

I would love to be 10 again if only for the experience of being a part of this play and perhaps recreating the rain scene or other iconic scenes from the film.

I am 51 and have rarely been in love the way you are when you sing and dance in the rain. I will, however, be in the audience, feeling "happy again” and I guess that is the next best thing.

Extra Points with Pete

y the time you read this, Memorial Day Weekend 2019 will have come and went. What a three-day weekend it was…! For the first time in a long time, all three days were what I like to call “Chamber of Commerce” weather as they were full of sunshine, low humidity and loads of folks enjoying the Jersey Shore. To all the businesses out there that rely on tourism traffic, I can only wish that the rest of the weekends from now through Labor Day are as beautiful as the one that just passed.

Since I last wrote, a few big names from the world of sports have passed away. The Eagles are working their way through OTA’s. I hoped the Phillies best player was finding his way, but I’m not sure that’s the case. Sixers fans have to watch the team that knocked Philly out of the playoffs compete in the NBA Finals. A former Flyers tough guy is hoping to get his name on the Stanley Cup. And, the Atlantic City Blackjacks miss out on a golden opportunity to knock off an unbeaten team.

From the entertainment world, I’ll ask if you know, “Who is James Holzhauer?” Also, are you ready for ROCKETMAN…?

As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: ●● It was sad to hear of the passing of Packers legendary QB Bart Starr at age 85. Now, I’m too young to have watched him play, but after spending a decade of my life in Nebraska, I think I have a good idea for the reverence that Packers fans had for #15. I mean, the man won an

unprecedented five NFL championships! The video clip you see the most is of his one-yard QB plunge in the “Ice Bowl” when the wind chill at Lambeau Field was -48 degrees. However, Packer legends like Brett Favre and others say that Starr’s lasting legacy should be what a warm gentleman he was off the field.

Starr only lost one playoff game in his time with the Packers as a player. Most Eagles fans know the answer to that one though as until Super Bowl LII in Minnesota, the Birds only championship was a NFL Championship over Starr & Vince Lombardi’s Packers in 1960. Here’s the scenario…at the Philadelphia 22-yard line with seconds to play and no time-outs left, Packers' quarterback Bart Starr threw a short pass to running back Jim Taylor. The last Eagle between Taylor and the end zone was Chuck Bednarik; he tackled Taylor at the Eagles' 10-yard line and essentially sat on top of Taylor as the final seconds ticked off the clock, ensuring that Taylor could not get up off the ground and that the Packers could not run another play.

Bednarik had played both defense and offense – at the age of 35 – and was in for 58 minutes of the game. As the final gun sounded, Bednarik growled to Taylor, "You can get up now, Taylor. This damn game's over!"

On Memorial Day Monday, the baseball world mourned the loss of former Red Sox great Bill Buckner at age 69. Buckner, sadly, misplayed a ball in the 1986 World Series that eventually saw the opposing New York Mets win it all, and not Boston. Things got so bad for “Billy Buck” that he moved to Idaho to get away from all the negative attention. However, Boston and a lot of baseball fans came around to realize what a great player & guy Buckner was. Buckner, for his part, was able to poke fun at his lowest moment when he suddenly

appeared near the end of a memorable 2012 “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode where he catches a baby dropped from a burning building. Even in Hollywood, Larry David gave Bill Buckner the chance to go out the hero.

I wrote last week about Bryce Harper showing signs of starting to hit again. Whoops, might’ve spoke too soon.

As I write this, Harper leads Major League Baseball in strikeouts. The next closest Phillie on the list is Rhys Hoskins, but he’s at 15 less than Harper through 53 games.

If you’re a Sixers fan, are you happy or angry that Toronto has advanced to the NBA Finals…? The Raptors knocked out Joel Embiid and company, but I fall in the category of happy. In other words, I think it lessens the sting out of the Sixers losing to a team that is in the NBA Finals against Golden State. I’ll put my pick of Warriors in 5 here first.

As I write this, Boston & St. Louis are skating in the Stanley Cup Finals. Former Flyer Brayden Schenn scored for the Blues in Game One, and former Flyer Craig Berube has done an outstanding job since taking over for Mike Yeo as Blues Head Coach. I’m definitely pulling for St. Louis in this one, but if Game One is any indication, the Blues are going to have to stay out of the penalty box and play with more discipline if they’re going to hoist the Cup. I went back to see the Atlantic City Blackjacks as they

really had a chance to knock off unbeaten Albany at home. Self-inflicted wounds did them in though, including a botched kick return that turned into a fumble in the endzone and a quick six for the Valor. I still think you should get out and sample the product though as they have one more home game in this stretch of the season left. ●● I have two items from entertainment as I urge you all to tune in to “Jeopardy” and check out James Holzhauer.

He’s shattering records on the show as he goes for the high value clues first out of the box and seems to rack up an insurmountable lead so quickly that the other players are often dazed about what just happened. Fun to watch. ●● From the Silver Screen, the movie “Rocketman” is set to go in theaters in wide release on Friday May 31st. After the success of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, I can imagine the Elton John approved bio doing really well at the box office. I’m certainly going to go see it.

I’ll close with this. On Memorial Day Monday, I posted on Facebook about my cousin Mike who died while serving our country overseas in 2010. For Michael P. Cassidy and all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, I am humbled and grateful. Some Gave All. Never Forget. Thank you for our Freedom. God Bless the USA, and all those serving and protecting our freedom…!!!

Two Is Better Than One As BreakingAC Joins Forces With Shore Local Newsmagazine

wo local independent news teams are joining together.

BreakingAC and Shore Local Newsmagazine have announced a new partnership that they believe will help improve local news and offer a wider variety of information to their readers.

Starting with the May 30 issue, Shore Local will have a BreakingAC insert that will put in print the news that many get online.

“Shore Local is excited to team up with BreakingAC,” said Cindy Fertsch, half of the husband-wife team that founded the news magazine. “Each is a fantastic publication and now, together they are even better. Readers will be able to see BreakingAC content in print within Shore Local, and Shore Local articles and content on BreakingAC.com.”

New ACPD program brings back oldfashioned neighborhood policing

A

lbert Herbert remembers knowing the police officers who lived around him when he was growing up in Atlantic City.

“Because there were guys in the neighborhood doing the job, friendly, it kind of broke down the barriers,” he recalled Tuesday as he stood in Chelsea Heights, where he still lives and now patrols.

The Atlantic City police officer is one of 16 assigned to the new Neighborhood Coordination Officer Program, which has assigned two officers to each of the city’s six wards along with four who will work homeless outreach.

Herbert and his partner, Jerard Ingenito, have a strong connection to their new beat.

Both men own homes in the neighborhood. Herbert grew up here. Ingenito has been here since 1999.

As they went on their inaugural rounds Tuesday, it didn’t take long to bump into those they knew, including the officers who influenced them.

“What they did is they changed the

perception,” Ingenito said as he stood next to Detective Joe Corson and retired Patrolman Connie Hackney.

“Every day you would see them coming around and they would stop and, ‘How’s your mom? I heard she was sick,'” Ingenito continued. “And that’s the kind of thing this program is trying to bring back. It’s trying to bring back. That we need officers on the street, getting to know the residents.”

This is the first of what will be an expanded program, Police Chief Henry White promised as the officers were officially introduced in City Council chambers.

“What we’re seeing here is exactly what’s supposed to happen when everyone is working together,” White said,

Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver was supposed to be an the announcement but was sick Tuesday.

“No one is more excited than I am,” said Lt. Will Santiago, who is leading the officers.

“As a young child walking the streets of Atlantic City, I was approached by police officers walking the beat, they instilled in me why I really wanted to become a police officer,” he recalled.

Residents will have these officers’ cell phone numbers and be able to reach out to them whenever they need.

At least two of the officers speak Spanish. Officer Syed Shah, who is in Ward 5, speaks Punjabi, Urdu and Pashto.

Mold raises health issues for some Atlantic City families

ashamirah Sanders has insisted that mold in her Atlantic City home was the cause of her youngest child’s health

issues.

But when her cabinets were removed this week, even she was shocked at what they found.

“I didn’t have any idea,” she said, standing in the kitchen of her Magellan Avenue home. “All I knew was that it was a problem and all I could tell them was that it keeps leaking into all my food, into my stove.”

She wanted to have a party when her youngest, Rahbiyah Higgs, turned 1 this week. But sewage seeping into the kitchen ended any ideas of celebration inside her home on Magellan Avenue.

to take out the cabinets. That’s when she saw the mold that she had been told was rectified.

The next day, the baby wound up back in the hospital.

“In February 2019, a letter was sent to the Health Department on behalf of this baby, who has severe persistent asthma,” a pediatric nurse practitioner from AtlantiCare wrote in an April 17 letter. “Today, the baby is here again for a sick visit for her lungs with wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Mother reports that there has been no improvements made to her situation.”

The nurse also wrote that she had received a call from a Health Department the next day: “He described

torrid, bysmal surroundings that were compounded by mold and sewage leaking from the toilet that did not have a seal ring in place.”

The same Health Department worker came after the cabinets were removed this week, and repeated many of those concerns.

On Thursday, Sanders and her seven children were given two rooms at the nearby Super 8 while work was done.

Extermination and mold remediation was expected to be completed by 3 p.m. Friday, Licensing and Inspections Director Dale Finch told BreakingAC. That isn’t long enough to fix the mold issue, said Mark-Anthony Rassman, owner of Levi Construction.

“It’s not like 24- or 48-hour process,” he said.

He said the walls need to be gutted and the wood replaced. Just painting over it won’t work.

“Not at that high level of toxicity,” he said.

Sanders isn’t the only one at Magellan Manor that has a child with health issues.

Tenisah Grate says her 3-year-old son’s asthma has gotten so severe he

sees a lung specialist and is on a steroid pills.

Her infant daughter often has “a smoker’s cough.”

She said she went to code enforcement about the black mold, and the management sent someone to paint over it.

“It was back three months later,” she said.

“Sometimes they put oil-based paint on it and there’s topical mold treatment,” Rassman said. “That seals it but it doesn’t kill it.”

It will come back, he said.

Sanders was brought to tears at the hospital when she met a father with a child suffering from black mold. He told her he lives in Stanley Holmes Village.

Sanders is now at a hotel in Absecon, after code officials came to the home Friday and deemed it still unfit.

The whole kitchen was torn out and a machine was left running to help with the toxic air. Workers wore masks inside the home, Sanders said.

A code official said management would have to find them another place until Wednesday. With nothing left in the city, they were sent to Absecon.

Sanders said the property manager paid for their rooms out of her own pocket.

Description of Birch Get ready To Pay More Grove Park attacker is For Margate Bridge released

orthfield police have released a sketch of the suspect who attacked a jogger at Birch Grove Park on May 7.

The woman was able to push the man away as he tried to grab her collar, according to the report.

A video also shows the man walking past a business.

He is described as a white or Hispanic male about 5-foot-11 and 25 to 35 years old.

He has a thin build, round face, dark hair and a slight mustache. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants.

The description matches that of a man who assaulted a woman at the

park in 2017.

In that case, a 26-year-old woman told police she was walking the trails at about 1:40 p.m. Dec. 19, 2017, when she passed a man, who then started following her.

He caught up to her and grabbed her from behind in a bear hug, then reached around and grabbed her crotch, according to the report.

The woman used her keys to scratch his face.

The man then pushed the woman to the ground and ran, leaving behind a blue bandana.

The suspect was described as an about 20-year-old 5-foot-10, clean-shaven white male.

No arrest was made in that case.

he tolls to cross the Margate bridge will increase next month.

Cash travelers will pay $2 per trip across the Downbeach Express — formerly known as the Margate Bridge and Causeway — beginning June 3.

The 25-cent increase is the first rate change in three years, said David Goddard, president of Ole Hansen and Sons, managing partner of the company that owns and operates the causeway.

Class 1 Express Pass patrons will pay $1.40 per crossing, a 30 percent discount.

“The fare increase is made necessary by the high cost of maintaining the four bridges and the more than two miles of roadway that comprise the Downbeach Express,” Goddard said.

“These bridges are nearly 90 years old and require continuous and intense upkeep and maintenance. We have spent and continue to spend millions of dollars in capital repair and maintenance costs to keep the bridges and roadway safe and well-conditioned. The only way to fund this work is through periodic toll adjustments.

It is used by thousands of residents and visitors, he said.

“It is our responsibility to ensure their safety, and to ensure that the bridges and roadway remain operational,” Goddard said. “We take that responsibility very seriously, as evidenced by the ongoing investment in the upkeep of the entire span, including the extensive repair and maintenance work done recently to the deck and roadway of Dock Thorofare Bridge in 2018, along with the ongoing reconstruction of piers supporting Risley and Whirlpool Channel Bridges since 2017.”

You only know what you know become a lifetime learner

ast week in my column, I wrote about references.

I used a funny story of me as a young bride, trying to mow my father-in-law’s lawn with a power washer to illustrate the very real point that “we only know what we know”. And what we know is solely based on the experiences that we have to refer back to…. Also known as our references. Today I want to drive home the idea of expanding your references, so that you can live a life filled to the brim with MORE. When I think of the word reference, I think of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Remember the encyclopedia?? The OG Google? The encyclopedia contained everything, I suppose, that the authors thought we needed to know in life. It had a small amount of info on a lot of things.

If I wanted to learn about, let’s say, armadillos, I could pick up the “A” encyclopaedia and learn about armadillos. In fact, I could even write a whole paper AND get an excellent

grade, based solely on what I found about armadillos in the encyclopaedia. After all, it was the most trusted reference that we had at that time!

I’d be able to tell you what armadillos look like, what they eat, how they mate, and probably a few quirky facts about them.

Because back then, that amount of information was sufficient, I might assume at that point that I know everything there is to know about armadillos, and be able to pull all kinds of armadillo facts out at cocktail parties to impress people. But suppose I showed up to a cocktail party, ready to spout off my 1992 encyclopedia armadillo facts and a gentleman popped up from 2019 with Google… Within 2 minutes, he would have 2,634% more information than me at the tip of his

finger, solely because he had more references than I did.

Often times, we think we know everything there is to know about any given subject (including but not limited to, our supposed area of expertise) and so we allow ourselves to become complacent, instead of increasing our references by learning. Shore Locals, you have no idea how powerful learning and growth is. At no other time in history have we had so much information at our fingertips, ready for us to discover... for free! If you are not growing, you are dying. A friend of mine said “The grass isn’t greener on the other side, it is greener where you choose to water it.” How do you grow the most vibrant green grass? You commit to learning and to diving deeper into whatever it is that you are passionate about, and if you’re not passionate about anything, then you expand your references so you find something to be passionate about.

Are you a parent? A business owner? A landscaper? A dog trainer? POTUS? It doesn’t matter who you are or what you are passionate about, if you commit to diving deeper into your craft, your business, your parenting, your relationships, etc… you will reach higher heights than you ever imagined.

You only know what you know,

but the flip side is that you DON’T know what you DON’T know. That’s a scary thought. You could go through your entire life with a huge piece of information missing that could increase your business tenfold or help you get that promotion, or save your marriage, or live our best life. Want to know the worst part of that? That missing piece could be hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered within the pages of a book, a great podcast, simple internet research, or a conversation with someone who knows more (has more references to draw from) than you.

This week, I hope to inspire you to want to develop a love for learning.

Increase your references, so you have google mind to draw from, instead of an encyclopaedia mind. Don’t let your desire for learning stop, simply because your an adult. Reach higher, go further. Drop the reality TV for a week and pick up a book about something you’re passionate about.

Made in the Shade Gardens

ot all of us are blessed with sunfilled gardens that can boast showy, colorful flowers. Even sunny yards usually have a shady side to them. So what’s a gardener to do?

This time of year, embrace it. When the summer heat is beating down, I enjoy walking around the side of my house, under an arbor, and through a serene, shady, and cool passage. It feels like a moment of peace before bursting into the hot, sunny backyard.

Those with shady gardens often wonder which plants will do well in shade. Although you can still enjoy flowers in your garden on the dark side, it’s good to focus on

foliage. You can create dramatic interest through color, texture, and shape. One of my favorite plants to use in the shade are variegated hostas. The white or yellow stripes

brighten up a dark space and are visible at night. Hosta leaves can be many shades of green, hues of blue, or even white. In the summer, they send up stems with tubular white or purple flowers that attract hummingbirds. They are perennials, and after a few years will grow large enough to divide with a spade... giving you free new plants! If you begin to notice holes in their leaves, crumble eggshells around them to keep slugs away.

Another impressive shade plant known more for its foliage than its flowers is coleus. Though it is an annual, the colorful leaves of chartreuse, hot pink, purple, or burgundy make them worth buying even though they will only last a season. They add a lot of color to a shady spot. Coral bells (heuchera) are also known for their foliage and, like hostas, come in all different shapes and colors. They stay in a nice tidy clump, and their tall stems will have tiny “bells” of pink or coral. Solomon’s seal and lily of the valley are shade lovers that also have little bell flowers. Lilies of the valley can tend to be aggressive spreaders, but considering the heavenly smell of the flowers in May, you shouldn’t mind.

Ferns are also aggressive growers but give off a peaceful vibe. Every year when they get too dense, I just pull some out

and plant them in pots on my porch for a tropical feel in the summer. I have seen dreamy pictures of forests filled with ferns and bluebells. Astilbe are well-behaved plants for shade that have fern-like leaves and send up spikes of flowers resembling plumes of feathers in pink, white, or burgundy.

Of course, my goto flowers for shady gardens are impatiens.

These annual flowers come in so many different colors to suit your taste. For a really dark corner, choose a lighter color such as pale pink or white. Otherwise, some of the deeper shades will disappear—especially in

the evening.

Often. some sun will reach a shady part of the garden at least part of the day. Even under the cover of trees, filtered light will penetrate through the leaves. And the area under deciduous trees that lose their leaves in fall may be sunny enough for spring bulbs such as tulips and daffodils to bloom. Partial shade gardens can be filled with perennial hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons, and bleeding hearts (dicentra).

Enjoy your shady garden as a respite from the heat. Place a garden bench in the corner, pour yourself a glass of iced tea, and ponder the day. You’ll realize how blessed you are to be living in the shade.

ednesday was the first distribution day of the “BAG IT FORWARD” reusable bag program in Margate. Local retailers and other Margate businesses received the bags as part of a new program from the Margate Business Association (MBA) in cooperation with the City of Margate and our member businesses.

These re-useable, re-cycle able, cloth shopping bags are offered to Margate shoppers Free of Charge. The only provision is that patrons either re-use them themselves or give one to a friend …. Hence the motto BAG IT FORWARD!

favorite pastime for many United States Presidents is golf. Our current president famously owns and builds many golf courses both here and around the world. He and his predecessors love to play the same game.

Seaview Golf Club, which is famous for famous guests, is where Sam Snead won his first major championship, the 1942 P.G.A. Championship. It’s also where the LPGA gathers annually to compete at The ShopRite LPGA Classic. Seaview has hosted United States presidents as well.

A friend of Seaview founder Clarence H. Geist was President Warren G. Harding. He was a frequent guest, and golfer, at the Reed’s Bay neighbored Bay Course. President Harding first teed it up at the Hugh Wilson and Donald Ross designed masterpiece in 1922 and returned many times afterwards.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower, commanding hero of World War II in Europe, also, was a visiting golfer to Seaview. Ike played Seaview’s seaside Bay Course, and its Pines Course,

opened in 1927, during two different press campaigns in 1953 and 1967.

Maybe America’s most famous golfing president, who had a putting green constructed right on the White House lawn, and who was, also, a member at Augusta, Georgia’s Augusta National Golf Club, with a tree named for him right off Augusta’s 17th tee, Eisenhower’s trips to the Jersey Shore and the Atlantic City area often included a round of 18 at Seaview. Great friend of America’s golfer, Arnold Palmer, it is estimated that the number of golfers in America doubled during Eisenhower’s eight years in residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Begin a Successful Weight Loss Journey by Accepting Yourself

here are weight loss programs and then there is losing weight. Should you lose the excess weight or find any reason not to? Let’s face it; getting the body weight in check is healthier.

Start by thinking of your weight within the context of your overall wellbeing. That means widening your focus to encompass more than just the numbers on the scale, the way your jeans fit and yes, even what you see in the mirror.

Embarking on a healthy weight loss program should inspire you, energize you and make you feel proud of yourself. It also takes time and patience. This can be a tall order for many but remember—when you begin a weight loss process from a place of self-love and acceptance, you are more likely to set realistic goals and allow for the little setbacks and disappointments that are common stumbling blocks for many.

I suggest to each of my clients to

start each day by affirming to yourself that you will do the best you can, no matter what happened yesterday.

Thinking of every day as an opportunity for a fresh start can help you to avoid getting into the cycle of doubt and negative self-talk that causes many people to give up on their weight loss goals early in the process.

Trying to love yourself while you lose weight seems a bit counterintuitive. After all, you’re working hard to change your body, so that must mean you don’t love it the way it is, right? Wanting to get healthy and accepting the body you have today don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Self-acceptance is a condition of grace and appreciation for the great range of body shapes and sizes. We are all different. Who you are and what you look like is unique.

Remember that your weight loss journey is about achieving better health instead of focusing on becoming someone else’s definition of “perfect.”

Aiming to drop a dress size in time for your high school reunion in six days is an easy path to disappointment and self-blaming.

Moreover, coming down on yourself in this way can actually contribute to increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which has been shown to increase the amount of belly fat stored by the body, partic-

ularly in women.

Setting a more attainable goal, such as trying a new exercise class once a week or swapping one sweet treat for a healthier option, is a better way to protect your self-esteem and respect your body’s limits.

You know that exercise is one of the keys to successful weight loss. But what you might not know is that physical activity stimulates feel-good chemicals in the brain that elevate your mood. Those who exercise regularly, as part of a weight loss routine, tend to rate their self-esteem levels as higher than those who don’t.

If finding the motivation to work out is difficult, grab a friend to exercise with you. Just as it’s helpful to learn to love yourself while you lose weight, there’s no better cheerleader to take on your journey than someone who wants the best for you and constantly reminds you of how wonderful you are.

Hero Campaign Announces Ambitious Safe Ride Program To Combat Drunk Driving

Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers announced today an ambitious new program to provide free rides home for patrons of bars, taverns and restaurants in Atlantic City and surrounding communities.

While a guest on “Joe’s Table for Two” on News Talk 1400 WOND, I had a chance to learn from another historian about the Ducktown Revitalization Project, which will include historic signage denoting key spots in Atlantic City’s “Little Italy.”

The following Monday I visited the Atlantic County Historical Society in Somers Point to see Anthony

Historic City Hall in Margate ing in June, a welcome addition to the long history of innovative saloons in that part of town.

Early the next morning I headed to Stockton University’s 11th Annual Jersey Shorecast Event, where businesspeople and college professors chatted about the state of the tourism business in Atlantic and Cape May counties. The event focuses on annual revenue, hotel occupancies, and gambling wins, but speakers noted that heritage tourism helps.

The keynote speaker, Mark Callazzo, discussed his development vision for the Orange Loop area of Atlantic City, but also talked about its history and showed an artist’s image with the beautifully preserved St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church in the background.

During the panel discussion that followed, Diane Wieland, director of Cape May County’s Department of Tourism for more than 20 years, noted that from its Victorian architecture to its wineries, Cape May’s tourism industry focuses on history, art, and culture.

What exactly is going on at the Somers Mansion? If you have driven by recently, it’s clear that a lot has already been done. On the morning

of Saturday, May 10, a crew of volunteers painted a masonry wall with a latex primer to seal existing cracks and prepare it to be re-painted a permanent beige color.

As part of the group behind the effort, Patriots for the Somers Mansion, I wanted to get my hands Somers Mansion dirty, so I painted for a couple of hours under the direction of pros who had donated their time and the supplies.

One of the professional painters who were there also taught me that the addition to the Mansion, built in the 1800s, had a foundation of Pennsylvania fieldstone, while most houses were built upon local bricks.

I was lucky enough to appear on the radio later that day, where I talked about plans to continue working on

Two days later I discussed the Somers Mansion with the Atlantic County History Roundtable, an organization that brings together history groups countywide, but not until we all toured the Margate Historical Museum in the old city hall where we saw historically significant objects such as a hand-pulled fire-cart that was once located in Lucy the Elephant.

At that meeting I was asked by the president of the Somers Point Historical Society to help with school groups coming to the museum that Friday, and I ended up spending a pleasant day sharing stories of the tunnels under Somers Mansion to dozens of fifth-graders from Dawes Avenue in Somers Point, who also spent their day moving between five historic sites around town and learning through heritage tourism.

Senior Moments: A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings recently read about the Behr Painting Company offering the right candidate to travel across the US and Canada searching for new paint hues and color schemes. This person will be paid $10,000 and all expenses paid included lodging. He or she would take notes and name new colors. The color naming process, according to the company requires time and creativity. Since my wife and I are planning an extensive trip in the near future, I suggested that we look into this opportunity further and consider applying for it. I imagined myself hiking through the deep, virtually unexplored forests discovering new shades of greens and browns; pristine lakes reflecting the blues of

the sky and rainbows created by the mists of a cascading waterfall. I shared my enthusiasm for the project with my wife. After carefully considering the options, the advantages, disadvantages, logistics and the potential for success or failure of the assignment, my wife with the speed of a super computer pretty much gave me the "ACCESS DENIED" response. Apparently, she knows me well enough to say that this assignment would dominate our trip. It will no longer be a vacation but a demanding quest of not one Holy Grail but hundreds of them ultimately landing me on the side of a lonely desolate highway with my thumb out waiting for a ride. Begrudgingly, I agreed. Sometimes she knows me better than I know myself.

After visiting my local hardware store in a futile effort to match a paint color with something I had previously painted, I became acutely aware of how daunting a task it must be to affix

a name to a paint that would describe the qualities of its hue. For instance, I picked up one of the color cards with the different shades of green. One shade was named CAMPUS. I, for one would have been hard pressed to look at that color and say, "Yep, that's definitely CAMPUS." A different mid ranged shade of green was named "NOTICE ME." Not quite the color I would associate with being noticed.

On the burnt orange pallet I could see colors named CINNAMON, OCTOBER SKY AND EVEN LUNAR DUSK but then came across a medium orange with the name of SKEET SHOOT. I don't even think Dick Cheney who accidently shot his hunting companion would agree with that. He probably associates his shooting with a deeper color. The palest of all shades of orange was named FAMOUS. I can't see applying that paint on my porch as telling someone who asks what color I’m using and I reply "Why, FAMOUS course." Some of the browns were named appropriately enough. For example, darker colors were BISON, MAPLE SYRUP, FRENCH COCOA and CHOCOLATE CHIP but then I was baffled by the lighter colors of RUMOR, DAYS GONE BY and the ever popular ECHO. Finally, in the red spectrum there were the obvious colors of RED GERANIUM, ROSEY, and PINK HAZE. But what really gave me pause was a pale pink shade with the name of FIRST DATE. If I were to name a color FIRST DATE, pink would not be my color of choice; perhaps BLACK HEART for black or STONE COLD for grey, BLUE MOOD for blue, or PANIC ROOM for screaming yellow might be more appropriate. So you see, in the end, my wife was right. Traveling around the country in search of new colors with compellingly descriptive names might sound romantic and full of wanderlust but clearly my temperament may disqualify me for such an endeavor.

New Television Production Will Call Atlantic City Home

he richness of Atlantic City – the beaches, playgrounds, neighborhoods, restaurants, boardwalk and casinos – provides the ideal setting for the independent television pilot 48 Blocks, scheduled for production in Atlantic City in September 2019.

“Atlantic City is in my blood,” says producer Dina Engel. Originally from Philadelphia, Engel grew up spending her summers at Ocean Side Cottage, a guesthouse owned by her family on the beach block of Little Rock Avenue. “When Sherry and I moved to the area in 2014 we quickly realized that the complexities of the city – wealth and poverty, powerful and powerless, development and decay – created an ideal setting for a Hollywood-style production,” Engel explained. 48 BLOCKS, a drama set in current-day Atlantic City, follows ex-NBA star Vernon “King” Carver, a philanthropist and real estate magnate under pressure. Enemies deep in his past are out to expose King’s long buried secrets and bring him down.

McCracken, the show creator, has been developing the project with her producing partner Engel for the past two years through Ventnor-based Little Rock Films and Studios. “In many ways, the city itself functions as a central character,” says McCracken, a photographer and cinematographer.

Engel, also an actor, has a lead role in the series.

Engel and McCracken collaborated with writers Daniel Putkowski and Stuart Connelly to develop the script.

“You feel the influence of Atlantic City’s origin story and energy in the behaviors and decision-making of every central character”, says “Connelly.

“The power of the place is strong and I really wanted to work with that.”

Connelly has also signed on to direct the project.

In an attempt to draw more filmmakers to the area, New Jersey recently implemented a new film tax incentive to support the growing arts community and boost revenue and tourism. While Engel and McCracken plan to participate in the tax credit program, they’re also looking to the local community for support. “The response from the community has been amazing. People are offering their help with all sorts of things that we really need – locations, catering, housing – it’s been really great,” explains McCracken.

The producers are currently filling key crew positions and will start auditioning principal roles in the middle of June. They plan to use local actors to fill the day player and background roles.

With a completed pilot in hand, Engel and McCracken will share our great city with television networks and streaming services in order to secure an order for a six-episode first season for 48 BLOCKS. isten folks. This week started with one of the most comprehensive CRDA meetings I have ever attended and participated in. My friends, the agenda was filled with positive projects in redevelopment, arts and job creation.

The CRDA board infuse an additional $100,000 to enhance our beloved August 2019 Airshow by expanding it and blessing us with an added Monday full of activities. The expansion will bring tourism dollars and, more importantly, families to our city. The airshow week begins Aug. 19, to the actual date of the airshow on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

The meeting then turned to the arts, the sweet sound of music, which will fill the air during the Kentucky Avenue Renaissance Festival this summer. Speaking with noted historian, Ralph Hunter, Sr., founder of the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, Hunter stated that for nearly three decades the streets around Kentucky Avenue were hotspots for African-American owned night clubs and music lovers alike. Unfortunately through the years Kentucky Avenue turned into a ghost-town, seemingly forgotten with the dawn of the casinos in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

Kentucky Avenue is now positioning itself for a renaissance that is going to have music, food and dancing return to “Kentucky” and “the Curb.” The sounds of Billie Holiday, Chris Colombo, Sammy Davis Jr. and Angela Burton will return to Kentucky Ave. Stay tuned for dates, times and performers, right here.

The R&B music will be having us shaking our behinds off this summer. So much for a boring meeting? I think not.

Thursday was a day filled with mixed emotions as I was thrilled to be hosting the “AC Mike Show” on News Talk 1400 WOND. My first guest was the father of a young boy who passed away a few years ago of pancreatic cancer, Christian Clopp. Mark Clopp joined me and spoke of the hurt and anger he felt when he learned someone defaced his son’s memorial at Underhill Park in Mays Landing.

Underhill Park is where Christian played along with his friends during his powerful, but short time here on Earth before passing away at the age of 9. His dad spoke about wanting to go out and search these young men out who defaced his son’s memorial, but he chose not to, using forgiveness as a tool to bring a community together once again.

I am sure many of you heard this story that made National news where Mr. Clopp turned a despicable situation into a restorative narrative. This is another way Christian’s legacy is taking us to another level of unity. You can see more on my Facebook post dated May 23.

Friday began with a bike ride in the 6 a.m. hour. It was awesome as I saw the CRDA SID workers getting the Boardwalk ready for the huge Memorial Day Weekend.

the Boardwalk to a glorious lather of activity throughout the afternoon and the weekend for the hundreds of thousands of holiday visitors who came to AC. Moving on to Saturday, the city was buzzing with excitement. I spoke with my pal Steel Pier President/Owner Anthony Catanoso, who said it feels like a Fourth of July weekend, which is great news to my ears.

I witnessed families lined up at Steel Pier waiting for the gates to open for their fun-filled day to begin and the chance to enjoy 26 rides, 13 food outlets, helicopter rides and four bars, all on the Steel Pier. See steelpier.com for more information.

Whoosh, finally it was Saturday night. It started at 7 p.m. at Boardwalk Hall with the AC Blackjacks’ game vs. Albany Empires. We came up short, but it was a great game and the loss was not due to lack of effort.

In speaking with team owner, Ron Jaworski, I get the feeling we just scratched the surface of what the Atlantic City Blackjacks will bring to Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City and Atlantic County. The night ended at Hard Rock watching ‘90s bands Collective Soul and Gin Blossoms taking us on a rollercoaster ride of head banging rock n’ roll music in the Soundwaves arena.

At the conclusion, I jogged across the casino floor to the Hard Rock Live Mark G. Etess Arena for the Freestyle Free for All Show, again dancing my behind off to Noel Pagan, TK7, Cover Girls and a host of others. What a way to end the night off.
