e had a very chilly and rough start to May with temps in the 50s and multiple rain events. Last week I told you that would change and we'd likely set ourselves up for a good Memorial Day weekend... guess what? That looks to hold true! The name of the game will be High Pressure. That system that is bringing LOVELY weather our way today and tomorrow will push
off-shore for the weekend and winds will start shifting out of the south and southwest. This will bring our temps back up into the 80s with higher humidity. High pressure positioned to our southeast is EXACTLY where we need it to stabilize our very fickle weather pattern. I believe from this point forward we will see much more "Summer-like" weather. 80s, partly sunny, higher humidity and pop -up thunderstorm chances. Summer is here and it will be here for awhile. E
ach week I drop off magazines at the Ocean City Welcome Center. Perched high off the 9th Street bridge on the way into Ocean City, it offers a beautiful view of the intercoastal waterway. There is always a car or two in the lot during the spring and winter months. But last Friday, as I pulled up, everything had changed. You could feel the excitement in the air as another busy season had arrived. The parking lot was full. Bikers and walkers were passing by and there were many photographers positioned behind tripods with cameras, capturing the beauty. I knew this moment was coming. We all have that one defining moment when we realize summer is here and it is game on! Summer is our season in South Jersey and it has arrived! We are so
fortunate to live at the Jersey Shore with its beauty and attractions that draw visitors by the thousands. The boost to our local economy is tremendous and much anticipated by business owners. This Friday, the annual unlocking of the ocean is taking place in Ocean City as business owners, dressed in their work attire, march into the ocean while Mayor Jay Gillian officially turns the key that unlocks summer. Resorts Casino and Hotel will drop one thousand beach balls on the Atlantic City Boardwalk to kick off the 2019 season. This is just the start of what is an endless summer of celebration in South Jersey. Memorial Day Weekend, the
unofficial start of summer is full of BBQs, pools, fireworks, food, and
family across the country but nowhere compares to what we have right here at the Jersey Shore. The sights and sounds of the beach along with the boardwalk bustling with activity, the scent of delicious foods and laughter of children on the rides.
There is nothing like it! Atlantic City and downbeach offer some of the best dining and entertainment experiences on the east coast. Although we "locals" are typically working hard during the summer, be sure to take a moment to smell the suntan lotion and take in some salt air. Never forget how fortunate we are to live here at the Shore, where ever ybody wants to be. Most importantly, Memorial Day is the time to remember and honor those who fought and sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Moods lift when the weather is beautiful. People tend to their gardens, dine alfresco, and enjoy whatever the beautiful weather inspires. Even our beloved ocean seems to roll in and out with a bit more enthusiasm as if it knows that crowds will soon gather to drink in its vast beauty. Well, to celebrate the start of the season that we are all looking forward to, Tropicana Atlantic City will kick off its family-friendly Memorial Day Celebration Block Party on May 25th at 9 pm on the AC Boardwalk directly in front of Tropicana. Summer of Heroes The HERO Campaign kicks off 2019 HEROtini Challenge
T
he John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers will kick off its 2019 “Summer of HEROES” drunk driving prevention initiative Friday, May 24th on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Hosted by the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, Steel Pier and Resorts Casino Hotel, the event will include a HEROtini® mocktail tasting from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a news conference with city officials to announce the launch of the campaign’s new Holiday HEROES Safe Ride Program. The 2019 HEROtini® Challenge will be a summer-long competition between 30 Atlantic City area casinos, bars, taverns and restaurants to find the area’s best mocktail. The public will decide the winner by donating to vote on the HERO Campaign website. The establishment with the most donations will win the coveted HEROtini® Cup. Donations collected from the mocktail competition will fund the campaign’s new Holiday HEROES Safe Ride Program, which will provide free and discounted rides home for patrons of participating HERO bars and taverns over the Thanksgiving to New Year holidays. With the program, the HERO Campaign aims to designate the greater Atlantic City area as New Jersey’s first “DUI-free” safe ride city.
“Through contributions by voters, the competition will fund our new HERO Safe Ride Program, to provide free and discounted rides home from participating HEROtini establishments over the holidays.” The HERO Campaign is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers to prevent drunk driving tragedies in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Ocean City to Unlock the Ocean for Memorial Day Weekend

The First Swimmers Will Take the ‘Business Persons Plunge’
n a long-standing Ocean City tradition, city officials will turn a ceremonial wooden key to officially “unlock the ocean” for the season at noon Friday, May 24. The free public event provides an early start to Memorial Day Weekend and welcomes a long-awaited summer. The Ocean City Beach Patrol will begin providing guarded beaches on Saturday, and boardwalk and downtown businesses will be open and ready for the holiday weekend. After a cool and wet spring, the forecast for the weekend looks sunny and warm. The “Unlocking of the Ocean” includes a newer tradition: The march of fully clothed business persons into the chilly Atlantic Ocean for the first swim of the summer (to the strains of the Ocean City High School marching band playing “Pomp and Circumstance”). Everybody is invited to participate in the Business Persons Plunge. It’s a chance to get some exposure for your business or organization or just to start Memorial Day Weekend with a splash. Groups and individuals can sign up in advance at www.ocnj.us/bizplunge. The Unlocking of the Ocean and the Business Persons Plunge take place on the beach adjacent to the Music Pier. Participants

Saturday morning (May 25) brings the Memorial Beach Challenge, a spectacle to behold as athletes complete a 2.5-mile obstacle course that covers much of the beach between Fifth Street and 14th Street. The keynote speaker will be Staff Sergeant Patrick Carney, a U.S. Army veteran of two tours of duty in Iraq. Carney sustained multiple injuries and now
advocates for veterans as a Department of Veterans Affairs employee. The National Moment of Remembrance is also set for May 27. Established by Congress, the event asks Americans, wherever they are at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, to pause in an act of national unity for one minute. Greg Murphy of Buglers Across America will sounds Taps from the Ocean City Music Pier to commemorate the moment. The performance will be broadcast on the boardwalk public address system. GUARDED BEACHES OPEN FOR THE SEASON The Ocean City Beach Patrol will guard the following beaches starting Memorial Day Weekend (May 25): St. Charles Place, Brighton Place, 8th Street, 9th Street, 10th Street, 11th Street, 12th Street, 26th Street, 34th Street and 58th Street. OCBP strongly urges bathers to swim only at guarded beaches. Beaches are guarded from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. weekends and holidays and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays. More beaches will be added
throughout the following weeks. Also a reminder: Seasonal beach tags will be on sale for a discounted $20 only through May 31 (the price goes up to $25 on June 1). Our Children Making Change
we typically do some group activities like a multi-family yard sale with a bake sale component. In past years I have reached out to the local summer farmers markets like Brigantine and Ventnor to see if the kids could set up a craft table for donations. Since we love to cook, my children and I have made challah breads on Fridays and sold them. I promote this to my friends and we always sell

n June 9th Our Children Making Change will kick off their 11th season. Laura Dulac created the program because she wanted her children to get involved in volunteer activities but could not fund any age-appropriate opportunities for them. Over the years, thousands of children have participated, benefitting many charities and it has expanded to other states. Every summer my children and I lead a team and it’s something that we look forward to all year. Here is how it works. At the kickoff event, children have the opportunity to make presentations nominating local non-profit organizations. After all of the presentations, the children vote and choose six organizations which all of the children fundraise for over the summer. One of my favorite aspects of Our Children Making Change is that it is kid-driven meaning the kids make decisions about where the money goes and they make decision about how to raise the money. Each participant is asked to raise $100 between June and August. The timing of this is great because it gives them two months when school is not in session to focus on fundraising. So how exactly do kids raise $100? The possibilities are endless. On my team

Try to think about how to reach large groups of people (at gatherings like a farmers market or via social media), what your kids’ interests are (for us it’s baking) and what people would be willing to spend money on. I loved an idea a friend did last summer with her girls. They made little pots and then filled them with succulents. I thought this was such a creative and fun way to raise money. Another really creative idea comes from Patrick Grimely, a 12 year-old lacrosse player on the Margate Riptides. He created an event called #PLAYLAXDAY which is a round robin lacrosse tournament. In his first year he had 85 participants who each paid
$5 and this year he expects it to be even bigger. What a great idea! At the end of the summer each participant is asked to go to the bank to deposit their money into the Our Children Making Change bank account. This a great way to teach kids about banking and making deposits. At the closing ceremony in August checks are presented to a member of each non-profit organization. It’s very powerful for the kids to see the money being given to the organizations and how grateful they are. Following the closing ceremony, the kids are given wristbands to ride the Ocean City rides for two hours, a really fun way to reward them for their hard work. So now you are excited about Our Children Making Change, how can
your kids get involved? The program is intended for kids ages 5-15 but I have had kids younger than that on my team. If you know a team leader, you can ask to join their team. If you think you can rally a group of kids to get involved, become a team leader. And if you want to join my team, just reach out. The more the merrier. Teach your kids about giving to local charities this summer by getting involved with Our Children Making Change. It is such a meaningful experience that will have a big impact on your children. Farm Markets Get Underway For Summer Vegging at the Shore By Marci Lutsky
L
ast Saturday was the final day of the Linwood Farmers Market spring season. I co-founded and co-manage the market. The end of the spring season signifies a couple of things. First, I can stop obsessively watching the weekend weather forecast until our fall season starts up again in September. Second, I can visit all of the summer farmers markets. From now until November, I buy most of my produce locally. Jersey fruits and vegetables are some of the best and luckily you can find them at a variety of markets. Here are some of my favorite markets to shop at over the summer. The Ventnor City Farmers Market will begin their second season on

Friday and be held every week from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm in the parking lot of Holy Trinity Parish until August 31st. At this market you will find a variety of farms, prepared food vendors and crafters. This market is ideal for the summer crowd who comes to the Shore and wants to stock up on local goodies for the weekend. I’m really looking forward to checking out the Upper Township Farmers Market which will be held on Sundays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
from June 24th through August 26th at Amanda’s Field in Petersburg. It’s nice to see the revival of this farmers market. There are not many markets held on Sundays and what’s also nice

nicely spread out so you don’t feel overcrowded. While I love shopping at the local farmers markets, I also cannot wait for my CSA (community supported agriculture) to begin in June. I purchased a farm share at B&B Farms in Egg Harbor City and each week I can go there to pick up my bag of pesticide-free fruits and vegetables from June through October. Other local farms that offer CSA’s are Jah’s Creation Organic Farm, Potato Homestead and J&T Farms. Jersey fresh produce is one of the reasons I look forward to this time of year. about this one is that it’s being advertised as Sunday Fun Day. Families are encouraged to attend not only to shop, but to enjoy entertainment. The three other markets that I enjoy shopping at are Ocean City, Margate and Brigantine. Ocean City Farmers Market is held on Wednesdays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm from June 27th through September 5th at the Tabernacle. This market is a nice blend of farms, food and crafts. The Margate Community Farmers Market is held on Thursdays in the parking lot of Steve and Cookies from June 14th through August 30th from 8:30 am until noon. Follow their Facebook page so you know when their annual peach pie contest is held in August. The Brigantine Farmers Market begins Memorial Day weekend and is held on Saturdays from 8:00 am to noon through September 1st. A
subject all women must address at one time in their lives is menopause. It is linked to changes in metabolism, reduced bone density and increased risk of heart disease. Additionally, many women going through menopause experience unpleasant symptoms, such as hot flashes and poor sleep. I would say about one third of my clientele are women who just can’t deal with the unbearable daily, even hourly hot flashes and mood swings. They are over the weight gain and experiencing uncontrollable carb cravings. Following a balanced diet of whole-foods, high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, high-quality protein and dairy products may reduce menopause symptoms. Phytoestrogens and healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids from fish, may also help. These simple changes to your diet may make this important transition in your life easier. There is evidence that certain foods may help relieve some symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, poor sleep and low bone density. The decline in estrogen levels during menopause can increase women’s risk of fractures. Dairy products, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, contain calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and vitamins D and K — all of which are which are essential for bone health. Dairy may also help improve sleep. Foods high in the amino acid glycine, found in milk and cheese, for example, promote deeper sleep in
menopausal women . Furthermore, some evidence links dairy consumption to a decreased risk of premature menopause, which occurs before the age of 45. Healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, may benefit women going through menopause. Foods highest in omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, such as mackerel, salmon and anchovies, and seeds like flax seeds, chia seeds and hemp seeds . Please incorporate whole grains. Whole grains are high in nutrients, including fiber and B vitamins, such as thiamine, niacin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid . A diet high in whole grains has been linked to a reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death. People who eat three or more servings of whole grains per day have a 20–30% lower risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, compared to people who eat mostly refined. Mom always said to eat your veggies. She was right! Cruciferous vegetables may be especially helpful for postmenopausal women. Eating broccoli decreases levels of a type of estrogen linked to breast cancer, while increasing levels of an estrogen type that protects against breast cancer. Dark berries may also benefit women going through menopause. 25 grams a day of freeze-dried strawberry powder lowers blood pressure. Phytoestrogens are compounds in foods that act as weak estrogens in your body. While there has been some controversy on including these in the diet, the most recent research suggests they may benefit health. Foods that naturally contain phytoestrogens include soybeans, chickpeas, peanuts, flax seeds barley, grapes, berries, plums, green and black tea, to name a few. The decline in estrogen from menopause
is linked to decreased muscle mass and bone strength. For this reason, women going through menopause should eat more protein . I do recommend that women over 50 years old consume about 20–25 grams of high-quality protein per meal. And stay hydrated! Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. Foods high in protein include eggs, meat, fish, legumes and dairy products. Additionally, you can add protein powders to smoothies or baked goods. Menopause triggers include spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, high sodium foods , processed and high sugar and added sugar foods. People who ate three or more servings of whole grains per day had a 20–30% lower risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, compared to people who ate It has been proven that premenopausal women who ate more dairy and animal protein had significantly higher bone density than those who ate less. It may also help improve sleep. A review study found that foods high in the amino acid glycine, found in milk and cheese, for example, promoted deeper sleep in menopausal women. Sweet Corn, Asparagus Tips and Herb Yogurt. You start by cooking up some corn and asparagus in a skillet. Next fire up the grill and add some quartered tomatoes. I have never grilled tomatoes and let me describe them in one word, amazing! When the tomatoes come off the grill add them to the asparagus and corn. Then make a super simple yogurt sauce. I loved everything about this salad. The charred tomatoes are bursting with flavor and the yogurt sauce is just perfect. This will definitely be going into my regular summer rotation. ▶3 ▶ ears Jersey sweet corn ▶1▶ bunch Jersey asparagus ▶3 ▶ to 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided ▶5 ▶ to 6 large Jersey beefsteak tomatoes, quartered ▶Salt ▶ and pepper, to taste ▶1▶ pint good-qualiTomatoes on Grill ty Greek yogurt ▶1▶ bunch scallions, roughly 3. chopped ▶1/2 ▶ bunch oregano, roughly chopped ▶Juice ▶ of 2 lemons
Instructions
Asparagus and Corn
1. With a sharp knife, cut corn kernels off cobs. Chop off the top third of each asparagus stalk; you want only the tips. Reserve remaining asparagus for another use. 2. In a medium saucepan over medium to high heat, warm 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Saute corn and asparagus for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until cooked but still crisp. Do not overcook. Let cool. (This can be done an hour
or so before serving.) Preheat an outdoor grill. Toss tomatoes with salt, pepper, and 2 to 3 tablespoons of the olive oil (just enough to coat them). Place tomatoes on the hottest part of the grill and heat until one side is charred. Immediately toss tomatoes with corn mixture. 4. In a mixing bowl, stir together yogurt, scallions, oregano, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. 5. Serve this salad family-style, with the yogurt sauce alongside, so that guests can dress their salads. Or plate individual portions, with a dollop of yogurt sauce on each.

One Vet's Legacy: The Spirit of Atlantic City

find his way back to Atlantic City. In one of his photos, he is sitting on a motorcycle in front of the Stenton Market, which was on Stenton Place in Atlantic City. In another photo, he is posing in front of his tent which he had decorated with "Atlantic City" over the door, as well as "This way to the boardwalk" and "This way to the Steel Pier, many attractions, one price." His commanding officer apparently didn't see the humor and made him take it down. Once while on leave in Atlantic City, he was near the beach and heard a girl screaming for help about 200 yards from shore. My dad immediately grabbed a life preserver, jumped into the water and brought her to safety. The Army Air Corps presented him with a Commendation Ribbon for his prompt action.

However, my father, may he rest in peace, also instilled in me a profound respect for those who have served. Last Memorial weekend, I completed a project to honor my father, Bernard Eberson. I scanned and restored all of his military photos and newspaper clippings, and published them as a book for future generations. I was immersed in this project for months, and discovered how intricately woven his connection to Atlantic City was. Born in Philadelphia, my father enlisted in the Bernard Eberson by the Stenton Market in Atlantic City Army at 18 years of age. A Little Bit Of History: Ocean City

O
n the graceful french curve island just across the water from Somers Point can be found, by their own motto, “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” The island stretches seven miles from bow to stern and sports award-winning beaches, a funfi lled boardwalk, a solid family-focused philosophy, and an interesting history of how it became that way. Prior to the arrival of the fi rst European explorer, Cornelius Jacob, in 1611, the barrier island was already a summer destination for the native Lenni-Lenape people of the area. It was their summer seafood hunting ground. The Lenape clans would paddle down any number of tributaries to what is now Ocean City to gather oysters, crabs, clams and fi sh to add to their clan’s stores of food. The hunting party’s return was traditionally met with a summer feast, which added a sense of celebratory anticipation to the tasks of gathering and preserving the food.
To the north, south, and east of the Ocean City area, European colo-nization had begun to take root. By mid1600’s, the whaling companies were well established. The sight of tall ships off the coast would become a more and more familiar sight for the summer Lenape foraging parties. In 1693, the Somers Family established Somerset Plantation and the settlement of Somers Point, which included the nearby islands. The only access to these
islands was by boat, so the islands were used primarily as a grazing area for domesticated herds. However, this did not stop the locals from traveling across the water for a picnic on the beach now and then. Circa 1700, a whaler named John Peck began to use the island as a whaling staging and processing station. This was the only industry on the island for many decades, owing to the lack of accessibility to this

stretch of land. In time, the northern head of the island became known as Peck’s Beach. A ferry system was set up to shuttle workers and goods to and from the mainland, but the island was still relatively isolated; an undisturbed gem sitting just out of reach. That is until four Methodist ministers met under a cedar tree in 1879, purchased the property, and decided to turn it into a Christian retreat and camp. Development of the area came quickly. It was an elaborate plan, complete with lots set aside for businesses, cottages, and hotels. Within the first 5 years, a school, a bridge, and a boardwalk had been built. The railroad was added soon after. It became a boom-town with the population increasing 230% between the years of 1890 and 1910. By the mid-1900’s, people were living year round on the island and the city began to take its present form.

Season Change and So Do I … and So Do YOU!

or some of you, it may have been a long winter. If you live for the days of the sun and the beach, it may seem to you like it’s been forever since you felt the warm sand between your toes. For others, you may think the winter flew by. I like to find things to enjoy about every season during the year. Sure certain times are more enjoyable then others for one reason or another, but I like to embrace the season that I’m in right now. I was driving from Atlantic City to Longport recently on Atlantic Avenue. If you are familiar with the route, you know of the traffic lights just about every third block. You also know that during the winter months a large stretch of those lights are switched from Red/Green to Yellow flashing lights. The traffic is so light during those months, it hardly makes sense to schedule them otherwise. But then just a few nights ago, I was on the same stretch and noticed the difference. They are back to Red/ Green, stop and go; a sure sign that the season is changing. The temperature reached into the 80’s this week and suddenly you could hear the talk of heading to the beach; a
sure sign the season is changing. And of course, it’s Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off to the summer season. Seasons change and along with it, a whole lot of things change. We all have seasons in our own lives. I don’t know about you, but the older I get the quicker the seasons seem to go. One day as parents we are changing diapers and the next day we are handing over keys to the car. And there is no denying it. Seasons change us. We grow during certain seasons in life. We gain new perspective on people, situations and circumstances. Because here is the reality. The key to navigating ourselves through the seasons of life is this. Make a point to find something to be grateful for, something to enjoy and embrace in each season. Look for the positive and uplifting parts. On the calendar, the seasons are changing right now. For our region and many of the businesses in our area, the rest of winter prepares everyone for the hustle and bustle of summer. So it is with us. One season prepares us for the next. Make the most of it.

Space Invaders of the Garden Kind

fter spending a weekend reclaiming an overgrown part of our backyard, it’s time to talk about invasive plants. Years of neglect and fear of poison ivy had made a prime piece of my garden unusable. But this week, my dear husband boldly attacked the plot, poison ivy and all. This gave us a new-found space for a raised garden bed. I see zucchini as well as Benadryl and calamine lotion in our future. Besides the poison ivy, two of the
main culprits of this overgrown mess were honeysuckle vine and English ivy. Honeysuckle has a lovely scent, attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, and children love to suck the sweet nectar out of its flowers. But beware. It wraps itself around everything in its path, sending runners that root everywhere. If you don’t keep it in check, it will take over your garden. Instead of giving up on this popular climber, try the native, non-invasive, coral honeysuckle vine (lonicera sempervirens), which will also attract butterflies and hummingbirds with its beautiful tubular flowers. Most beginner gardeners have made the rookie mistake of planting something in their backyard that they couldn’t resist at the garden nursery. Years later, they wish they’d never heard of trumpet vine, wisteria, or English ivy. Ask anyone that has bamboo in their yard and you’ll get an earful from one that regrets the mistakes of their youth.

Another common way of introducing plants to your garden is through plant swapping. Exchanging surpluses of flowers with friends can be great fun. But research the plant they are offering you. Normally, if a gardener is giving away plants from their garden, it’s something that will be spreading in yours. This can be wonderful since large swathes of color make a better impact than one or two flowers. But be prepared to discipline a wandering newcomer to your garden. Years ago, I brought home a centerpiece from a party that had lemon balm in it. I was so happy to plant this lemony-smelling herb in my garden. Now I have it coming out of my ears. It’s popping up everywhere. Had I done a quick search, I would have realized lemon balm is part of the mint family, which is known for spreading like crazy. Any mint will quickly take over a small space. If you’d like to grow mint, keep it in a container. And quickly pull out any volunteers that spring up outside your pot. Keeping aggressive growers in check is like sin. You have to deal with it early and often or it will take over and bring others down with it. Some eligible plants for trading from my garden are bee balm, ferns, and rose of Sharon. Though I love each of these, they multiply like bunnies and need thinned out almost yearly. Bee balm grows profusely, but its red flowers attract hummingbirds, so I give it much freedom.
Recently, my friend gave me rose campion and yarrow. As suspected, both of these plants grow prolifically, but they are also beauties. So I happily added them to my garden, knowing
I will have to keep my eye on them in years to come. A little research now can prevent big headaches later. Read about plants before you give them a home in your garden, and heed the warnings of friends. Weigh the work of keeping an invasive plant under control versus its benefit to you. Keep known space invaders in pots to limit their range. And if they have worn out their welcome, offer them to a friend. English ivy anyone? it just doesn't exist. Even when then young United States Senator Dan Quayle was selected by President George H.W. Bush to be his Vice Presidential running mate in 1988; He was not only NOT given the "rising star" treatment, the media savaged him on a daily basis. He was so brutally attacked by the national media, that they succeeded in ruining him. There was no way that the media was going to allow a young Republican to be on a national scene of relevance for 30 or more years. When Quayle became the 44th Vice President in American history, he was only 45 years old. He had been a member of the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981 and a United States Senator from 1981 to 1989. And, Vice President from 1989 to 1993. Compare Quayle's record to Obama's. It's a joke. It's not even close. Quayle's experience was significantly beyond Obama's. Quayle was never once called a "rising star." They even blamed Quayle for spelling

young Democrats into quote "rising stars" and household names. Here's a few "rising stars" over the past several years: Barack Obama, Robert "Beto" O'Rourke, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Stacy Abrams, the former candidate for Governor of Georgia, South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Joe Kennedy III, Ruben Gallego, Seth Moulton, Joaquin Castro, Hakeem Jeffries, to name just a few. There's many more. Regarding Buttigieg (37), he's barely old enough to qualify to run for President of the United States. He is a former Naval intelligence officer. I thank him for his honorable service. He's been a local Mayor since 2012. If you're being honest, his resume is very thin. Yet, the media adores him every way. He has been provided with hundreds of thousands of dollars (if not millions) in "free" gushing publicity, thinly disguised as news reporting. Can you name even one Republican over the past 30 years that has been given the "rising star" treatment? I've tried. You can't. Because

"potato" wrong, when he actually corrected the misspelled word, when the cue card had it spelled with an "e" at the end. It was a teacher who got it wrong. Yet, the media relentlessly tagged Quayle with this to make him look stupid. They made him childlike when he debated Texas Senator Lloyd Benson. No doubt, you remember: "Senator, I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. And, you, Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Again, the national media crushed Quayle by pushing this quip on an overtime basis. This was provided so much market saturation free national media publicity that it has become a part of political lexicon. It has been used to eviscerate politicians and others and embarrass them that they think too well of themselves. You may also recall that Quayle took issue with the television program Murphy Brown. Quayle blamed the violence in America and a decline in values to the single-Mother character portrayed on "Murphy Brown."

Of course, the media again regularly savaged Quayle about this. The media desperately attempted to disqualify President Bush by regularly questioning his selection of Quayle and called Bush's judgment into question. Do recall the media ever questioning Obama's ridiculously thin resume? Despite all of the unfair attacks, the Bush-Quayle ticket won big against Michael Dukakis and Benson; winning the popular vote by a margin of 53-46 percent. They won 40 states and 426 Electoral votes. It was a landslide. Quayle ran for President, seeking the Republican nomination in 2000, but, never stood a chance. The media had wildly succeeded in taking a man of significant accomplishment and making him look like a lightweight. In 2008, the media took an actual lightweight like Obama and snookered enough of the the American electorate to believe that Obama was a man of accomplishment, substance and experience. Do you remember how the national media treated Sarah Palin in 2012. Again, they rolled out the same scam that she's dumb, etc. They picked on her wardrobe and criticized who/ how it was paid for. Can you imagine a Democrat woman being treated like Palin. Again, here was a young, beautiful, smart Republican woman, who could have been on the nation scene for 30 years. No way were they going to let that happen. The media systematically set about destroying Palin. They criticized any and every thing that she said or did. Palin pushed back hard against the media. But, their relentless tactics worked. They effectively destroyed Palin. They were willing
to attack her children. Even her then young son, Trig. It reminds us a lot of how the media attacks President Donald Trump's children. The media also attacked the Bush twins; But, note, the media never once attacked Amy Carter, Chelsea Clinton of the Obama Daughters. I have had a rule for my entire career to never attack the young children of our Presidents. It's the right thing to do. The Democrats, however, don't play it this way. They have even attacked young Barron Trump. Like an endangered species; let's all band together in search of young, rising Republican stars. Do they exist? Have they ever existed? Can you find one? Expand Your References, Expand Your Opportunity

ach one of us act and react based on what we have learned from our own life experiences. That is what makes us so different! Those experiences, or references, shape what we think, how we act, what we wear, what we eat, what we believe, and who we are. It is for this reason that I think it is essential for us all to be learning and growing constantly forever and ever. Amen. The more experiences we have, the more references we gain, the smarter we become, the more opportunities we give ourselves. When we both look for opportunities to learn and grow, and use every opportunity to learn and grow, we are setting ourselves
up for incredible success, both personally and professionally. This week’s column is a two-part series. I am going to explain references with a funny story this week, but come on back next week to drive it home with me! So let’s jump in. This may (will) sound completely ridiculous, but I am confident that you will get a great laugh out of this story, so we’re going to travel back in time to 2009. I was a young bride-to-be. My husband was away at training for the Army and my soon to be Fatherin-law was in Afghanistan with the 177th Fighter Wing. I was working full time at a restaurant in Atlantic City, teaching a ton of dance classes, and planning a wedding and a move down South to Fort Campbell, KY. I had been staying at my Father-in-law’s house to watch his dog and care for his home, since my then- fiance was away at Fort Sill. Bill (my Father-in-law) had hired the kid across the street to mow the lawn. He did a decent job, but 2 days before Bill returned home from

deployment, the lawn needed a fresh cut. I was too scared to go over and ask the kid to cut it (I had clear issues with confrontation at that time, obviously), but it needed to be perfect for his homecoming, so I decided I was going to do it myself. Bill was going to come home to a mowed lawn, come hell or high water! Now let’s discuss the important fact that I grew up with very gender specific chores. I did dishes. I set the table. I did laundry and hung it out to dry. I kept the bathrooms on point! Here is a detailed list of chores I did NOT have to do:
Take out the trash. Mow the lawn. Apparently, in my young, can-do mind, I didn’t see that as an obstacle. I thought to myself, “I know plenty of people who are dumb as a doornail and they can mow a lawn. I have got this!” I set off, my pride a-blaze, darting around the shed looking for the mower. It was not in the shed. I thought and I thought. Duh! He must’ve put it in the basement, because he was gone for a year and the kid across the street has a ride on mower. Boom. To the basement I went, searching like Christopher Colombus for a new land. There she was, in all of her red glory. The mower. I began pulling her toward the steps, but I became concerned that it was so heavy, How would I get it up? A solid twenty minutes later, I was up the basement stairs and outside, just me, my aching back, and the red mower. Ready to conquer the landscape, I looked for the pulley thingy on the side, but it wasn’t where I expected it to be. I thought for a moment and then circled the mower like a hungry shark, ready to eat through a sea of slightly overgrown grass. I couldn’t figure it out. I called my husband at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. “Just clasp the bar to the handle and then pull the cord on the side.” He said “No there is no bar under the handle. And there’s no cord,” I said, “All I see is this gun-looking thing on the right side of it! What is the deal with this thing?” There was silence on the end of the line. “Hello?” I asked. “Is it red? Did you bring… the power washer up?” I was IRATE! How could you think I would mistake a power-washer for a lawn mower?? Do you think I’m an
idiot?? My soon to be groom thinks that I am as dense as...” I paused. I paused some more. “I gotta go, I’ll call you back”, I said. As I hung up the phone, I felt like there were a million eyes on me. So I did what every self-respecting, woman would do. I looked for something to power wash, and then decided to run as fast as I could into the basement and get the 400 lb power washer back down, before anyone could get a glimpse of my idiocy. To some, this hilarious story may illustrate a lack of intelligence. How could she not know that she had a giant power washer instead of a mower?? (by the way,in my defense, it did look similar to a mower, just so we’re clear.) I had no idea that I was trying to mow the lawn with a power washer, because I didn’t have the reference! I never experienced mowing a lawn before. I never started a mower, I never pushed a mower. Heck! I never even saw a lawn mower up close! I had a heart that wanted to do this thing so badly, but no references as to how to do it and do it well… until that day, when I learned a valuable lesson: get all of the information before you jump into something. Learning is power. This is exactly the point that I want to close with. Every day, we have opportunities to learn and to grow. Often, we become defensive and self-justifying instead of learning from our mistakes. We also don’t want to read or engage in education, because we think we’re done learning. That’s so sad! You, Shore Local, are missing out on huge opportunities if you are in that mindset. This week I want to encourage you to use every obstacle and mistake that happens in your world, as an opportunity to learn and grow. Next week, we’re going to talk about expanding our references to be “grow-getters”, people who want to move forward in their lives and businesses and live the life of their dreams. Interview with Kansas Guitarist, Violinist David Ragsdale
he iconic band, Kansas, comes to Atlantic City’s Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Friday, May 31 and Saturday June 1. With a career spanning more than four decades, Kansas has established itself as rock legends. Shore Local caught up with band member David Ragsdale. Shore Local: So, the Kansas tour is off and running. Where are you playing tonight? David Ragsdale: We’re in Boca Raton, Florida. Shore Local: I know your schedule is jam packed, and you’re playing all your radio classics and a few songs from the 15th studio album from Kansas. I know there are a lot of “fan favorites” but what’s the one song that fans get most excited about and does that actually differ from city to city? David: “Carry On Wayward Son” is always going to be the one fans get excited about. But all the standards, “Point of No Return,” “Dust in the Wind,” the entire library gets noticed. It’s a huge fan base and everyone’s got their favorites. Some of them are less well-known than others. No matter what we play, someone out there is really happy about it. SL: This is your second go-around with Kansas, but I want to get back to you as a violinist, growing up with your classical and your Tulsa Philharmonic background, starting at what age? David: My mom had me taking violin lessons when I was young, like

three or four but I hated it. I mean, I really, really hated it. Fast forward to high school when I was playing more guitar. I remember the first time I heard “Can I Tell You”, a Kansas song on my car radio. All of a sudden, man, here’s this rock band with this rocking violin thing going on. I was like, “Hey, wait a minute. Wait a minute. That’s not such a bad idea.” SL: So then how did you end up with Kansas? David Ragsdale: I started practicing violin again. I didn’t really start taking lessons again. I mean, I had learned against my will as a kid. I hadn’t played recently, and I’d lost most everything I had. I practiced up and managed to get myself accepted to Columbus State University. I studied and got to where I could play again. And then chased Kansas around for a couple of years while I was living in Nashville, and finally

managed to talk them into adding me to the lineup. SL: You first linked up with the band in ‘91 through their accountant? DR: It’s the most unlikely story you’ve ever heard. At the time, I was playing with Louise Mandrell; this was back in the ‘80s. Kansas had broken up for a period of time and had reformed with Steve Morse, one of the greatest guitar players on the planet, and he had a band that featured a
violinist, so I was a big Steve Morse fan. I had a childhood friend of mine who I grew up with in Georgia who had become a special effects makeup technician and I was hanging out with Steve. I didn’t even know that Kansas had gotten back together and had released a new album. Then I found out that Steve Morse was on the record. I said holy cow, who’s the violin player? My friend said there are no violin players. So, we sat there and listened to the record and I could hear the violin parts. He said, ‘You need to go home, put this on your 4-track machine, add the violin parts you say you hear and send them your tape.’ That’s what I did. There were three songs I selected off the Power album and added the violin parts. A friend of mine was a friend of the banker that Kansas was using at the time. He got the tape to the banker, who got the tape to the tour manager, who got the tape to the band. It was just an incredible sequence of events. SL: And that’s how history was made. DR: Yes, a combination of persistence and good luck.

Since I last wrote, a beloved Eagles defensive player has called it a career. The Phillies best player appears to be finding his groove again. The Sixers have retained the services of Brett Brown, but promise there will be changes. The Flyers are on the search for a good #2 center. The Atlantic City Blackjacks love playing at home. Oh, and since I’m NOT watching Game of Thrones, I do have a recommendation for a drama that’s brand new to HBO that is riveting. As always, we begin with sports, and my

One, is that Patrick is not a bust. Taken #2 overall in the 2017 NHL draft, many folks expected bigger production out of Patrick to this point. Patrick’s numbers so far are 26 goals and 61 points over two seasons, but that’s why Sam’s second point is so valid. That the Flyers need an established #2 center behind Sean Couturier to help Patrick’s career development. Free agent names that are on the Flyers radar include Matt Duchene, Kevin Hayes, and Brock

I finally got out in person to see the Atlantic City Blackjacks and came away impressed with the product. The Blackjacks beat the Baltimore Brigade at home 48-41 to even their record at 2-2 overall. They are in the middle of a threegame stretch as they will be home with the unbeaten Albany Empire next. That should be an interesting contest for Blackjacks top man George Manias as he’s the C.O.O. for Trifecta Sports & Entertainment, the group that oversees both teams (as well as the Philadelphia Soul). Here’s my thought that George will be rooting for a full building and a good game, more than one team or the other to win. That said, I saw a product last Saturday that was family friendly and affordable. I always hear parents complain there’s nothing for kids

It’s a five-part miniseries about the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and it is fascinating to see how much went so wrong, so quickly for the Soviets. Even though you can do a quick Google search to see how things actually turned out, it’s still riveting to watch how events unfolded in a time before the internet & social media were common place. I highly recommend watching it if you get the chance. I’ll close with this. He hasn’t been here very long, but I walked away extremely impressed with AC Blackjacks Head Coach Ron James after meeting him. I asked him about how his team is enjoying playing at the historic Boardwalk Hall, and he started off with a somewhat generic answer about how great the staff & folks are that work there before turning serious and saying “read the front of the building, and think about the history of this building and the folks that have passed through here.” In
case you don’t know, carved into the stone on the front of the building are the following words: “A PERMANENT MONUMENT CONCEIVED AS A TRIBUE TO THE IDEALS OF ATLANTIC CITY. BUILT BY ITS CITIZENS AND DEDICATED TO RECREATION, SOCIAL PROGRESS AND INDUSTRIAL ACHEIVEMENTS” Who writes like that anymore? Kudos to Coach James for not only taking the time to notice the engraved statement, but also for appreciating his new digs! Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. Belhaven Award Winning Band Represents South Jersey Well

elhaven Middle School’s Band returned from Niagara Falls with their hands full of trophies. The Linwood school band sent 102 students on a five day trip jam-packed with activities, culminating in a “Music in the Parks” festival and band competition. Both
the jazz band and the concert band won first place trophies as well as winning best middle school band overall. They are especially proud of winning the Esprit de Corps award given to only one school at the festival for having the most respectful and well-behaved students and parents. Band Director Nancy Robinson said, “While I was thrilled with the band’s musicality and playing skills at the competition, my proudest moment was when we won the Esprit de Corps Award. Learning to become a musician is a great thing, but being a polite, respectful and courteous young adult is even better!” Way to represent South Jersey, Belhaven! In addition to band director Nancy Robinson, the group was also led by assistant band director David Lamkin, Belhaven School Principal Susan Speirs, and 35 adult chaperones. All reported to the school at 6 a.m. on May 15th and kept up a rigorous schedule the entire time. Part of their trip included a stop at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park. Veterans of the US Navy gave students a guided tour of decommissioned ships and a submarine. Other highlights of the band

Of course, the main goals of the trip were Niagara Falls State Park, the band competition, and the awards ceremony at Six Flags Darien Lake Amusement Park. Students work hard to reach this level of competition. Starting in September, band members meet for practice at 7:35 a.m. before school. They also earn their way to the trip with multiple fundraisers including mum sales in the fall, and fruit, pizza and cookie dough sales throughout the school year.
Emergency services personnel celebrated the band’s big win and return home with a special escort, announcing their arrival with the loud sirens and honking horns of fire engines, and police cars. Proud parents and family members welcomed their students home with cheers and applause. Congratulations, Belhaven! Tammy Thornton is a mom of four, a substitute teacher, and a Sunday school teacher. She is passionate about gardening and cooking, and loves the beach.

Annual Golf Tournament Gives Back to Those with Cancer Each year in our region, cancer touches thousands of men, women and children. Its impact can be devastating to the individual and their family. At Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, individuals and families are receiving the information, guidance, laughter, and most importantly, the support they need to live their lives with cancer, at no cost. But with no costs involved comes a great need for outside financial support. In 2013, the Staff at Harbor Pines Golf Club saw a local neighbor in need and decided to lend a helping hand and the Golf for Gilda’s Tournament was created. In an effort to offer hope and help make a tremendous difference in the local community, Harbor Pines Employees plan and execute an annual golf tournament, where 100 percent of the proceeds go to Gilda’s Club
South Jersey. “This golf event is very special in our hearts” said Debbie Stevenson, Director of Sales and Marketing and Gilda’s Club member. “So many in our team here were touched by cancer, either personally or a loved one. We wanted to use our knowledge and resources to do something great and give back to our community. We are so glad to have kept it going for a 6th straight year.” The 6th Annual Golf for Gilda’s Charity Tournament will again take place at Harbor Pines Golf Club on Thursday May 23, 2018. Atlantic City Insider By AC Mike Lopez
T
he week of May 13th started off with a delicious breakfast at Brittany’s Café in Ventnor with my pal Alex Marino,COO of Stockton University. Anybody who knows Alex knows that he is always on the move so I was incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to sit down with him. We talked about a lot during our conversation but all I can say is that there is a whole lot to look forward to at Stockton in the coming year. Later in the day I settled in at the Atlantic County Historical Society in Somers Point where Anthony Catanoso, owner/ president of the Steel Pier delighted us with a presentation of the Steel Pier. In front of a standing room only crowd, Anthony took us back to the beginning days of the pier in 1898, through the leasing of the pier from Donald Trump in 1993, through today. During the Donald Trump era in Atlantic City, Trump build the 1,000 foot pier for the sole use of landing his helicopters as he charted high rollers into A.C. to visit Trump Taj Mahal. In 1993 Trump signed a 2 year lease with Anthony and 5 other partners. With $1,600, the brothers opened
the Steel Pier, keeping it in business for almost 20 years on small leases year to year. Eventually, they bought the pier from Trump and began building the Infamous Steel Pier for what it is today. The pier now boasts a 227-foot observation wheel, 25 amusement rides, and a helicopter ride down the Atlantic City beach. It has also become home to many weddings and large events with 13 food outlets and 4 bars. The entire presentation can be found on my Facebook page - Mike Lopez. Tuesday morning I headed over to Boardwalk Hall to catch the AC Blackjacks practice at 10am as they prepped for the May 18th game against the Baltimore Brigades - a game Atlantic City ended up winning 48-41. Practices are open to the public Tuesday through Thursday, 10am-noon. The next AC Blackjacks game will be held May 25th at 7pm. Get your tickets at www.acblackjacks.com. The events continued with the Meet AC’s Atlantic City Hospitality Marketing meeting at Top Golf Swing Suite at Ocean Resort. Saturday morning I jumped on my bike and headed down to Kennedy Plaza to attend the Stop the Heroin Recovery Walk where thousands of participants gathered to hear Tony Luke talk about recovery, the loss of his son, and awareness. Thank you Bill and Tammy Schmincke for keeping Steven’s legacy alive.
