he last standing movie theater on Absecon Island was in danger of collapse when it was sold by the Frank family. The new owners are putting in $2 million to revive the art deco landmark that played it's last move 15 year ago.

The buildings older infrastructure has required some extra time. However, the steelwork is nearly complete and they will be starting phase two of the restoration.

Owner Brett DeNafo said the construction should be completed by August.

Holiday Fun Letter from the editor

S

ometimes I think that I'd be a great stand up comedian with a show entitled, “I am so old that…”

One of my lines would definitely be, "I am so old that when I was a kid we had Easter Egg Hunts and hunted for actual eggs!" Not the colorful plastic eggs filled with candy or other prizes kids hunt for today, but real hard boiled dyed eggs! In fact the whole point of dying or coloring your Easter Eggs was so you had something to hunt for.

Today's Easter Egg hunts are much fancier and complex than they were during my childhood. Modern mothers need look no further than Pinterest for countless ideas and variations on the classic egg hunt. One of my favorites is putting a small glow stick in the egg. The egg then illuminates and having the egg hunt in the dark adds a whole new level of excitement. As my teenage children outgrew the candy hunt, I could still draw them in by putting cash in the eggs. I would fill them with very small amounts with one exception - "the golden egg." That special egg had a twenty

dollar bill in it for the lucky one who found it. The possibility of finding that egg, with a real payout, kept them coming back year after year.

Holiday traditions give us special opportunities to create memories together with our loved ones. It gives us something to look forward to. Sometimes the traditions may seem silly at first glance, but when we look back they tend to be some of our most precious memories.

One of our traditions is that every Easter we walk on the Ocean City boardwalk.

It's changed so much over the years. I can still close my eyes and see my small children posing with the Easter bunny and the excitement in their eyes during the egg hunt on the beach. Of course the rides opening up offered the greatest excitement of all.

Now my grown girls and I still enjoy Easter in Ocean City,but these days, it looks a little different. We browse through the shops, walk on the beach and grab coffee together. The holiday may look different than it once did, but the connection and love is the same as it has always been.

Somers Point Pours a New One SoPo Brewing Company opens its doors

T

he old Sea Isle Ice building in Somers Point has transformed into the new local “It “ place to find craft beer.

The former ICE sign keeps a watchful eye (inside) on the building’s new proprietor...The Somers Point Brewing Company.

Approved in October 2017, the microbrewery and tasting room that holds up to 50 patrons, had a later start than anticipated. However, the line out of the door spoke volumes about local support.

The Brewing Company was the

vision of John DiNafrio, a Mainland High School graduate and Tech Center employee and his five business partners: Edward Siegel, Kevin Szagala, Depak Chauhan , Michael Prata and Bob Bielrzycki. Opening the doors on April 11, 2019, it was met with well wishers, friends and beer fans alike.

ucky: The Real Story of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Boss is the book

by Frank J. Ferry a longtime law practitioner and native of Atlantic City. Some might have heard the name Nucky Johnson in popular culture such as in the show Boardwalk Empire. However, actor Steve Buscemi’s portrayal of Nucky was exaggerated. Part of the reason Frank Ferry was motivated to write this book was to shed light on who this immensely popular and beloved political figure really was. Ferry had the pleasure of knowing Nucky personally and representing him in court later in his life while also becoming great friends in the process.

Enoch L. Johnson, or Nucky as he was frequently called, was a key political figure for New Jersey in the

early 1900s. He stood tall at around 6 foot 2 inches and you would often see him looking sharp as he would strut down the Atlantic City boardwalk. He would wear grey spats with a long black coat and gloves on while always donning his trademark boutonniere, a red carnation. People loved Nucky, he was one of the most charming and generous people you could find back then. He would often make appear-

Frank Ferry recalled the first time he every saw Nucky, years before they would cross paths and become friends. Ferry was an Atlantic City lifeguard back around the time Nucky was at his peak popularity in Atlantic City. Ferry and his friends went into The Cotton Club in Atlantic City after work one day and soon after, they saw this tall and imposing man making his way on stage with two burlesque dancers on his arms.

This was Nucky Johnson in all his glory. The crowd at the club showered him with their love and adoration and Ferry, like everyone else, was captivated by who he was. What many people today might want to know is, why was Nucky so popular? There are many different reasons why Nucky was so loved in Atlantic City, but one of the most famous reasons was his partnership with Lou Barone, one of the leading members of a large cartel of underworld figures who actively defied the laws of prohibition at the time.

The official name of this group was the Big Seven. Notable members of the Big Seven were John D’Agostino and Al Capone and all of them met in Atlantic City for a time to discuss how to navigate their business through America’s prohibition era.

was sheriff, the business arrangement was that Barone would give Nucky some of the profits from his alcohol business and in return Nucky would keep everything hush and on the downlow. Speakeasys were a big part of prohibition as they were hidden

Author Frank Ferry posing with his book before making an appearance on Shore Local Live havens where people would sneak in. Many believe that the property of Chef Vola’s, a now prominent restaurant of the Atlantic City area, housed one of the first speakeasys of Atlantic City.

In his book, Frank Ferry is very thorough with his research and personal recounts of his friend Nucky’s life from when he was a prominent political figure, to his legal troubles, and into the last years of his life. Years after Ferry first saw Nucky at the Cotton Club, their paths would cross again in 1941 when Nucky eventually found himself caught in some legal trouble. Frank Ferry, then an Assistant U.S. Attorney of

South Jersey, became his lawyer and represented him throughout the entirety of his case. Ferry recounts that Nucky did not want to talk about his legal troubles when meeting with his lawyer, Ferry, instead he was genuinely interested in Ferry’s life and wanted to learn more about him.

That was just a testament to Nucky’s personable demeanor and overall friendliness.

Nucky did eventually have some jail time after refusing to pay a fine.

Before going to jail, Ferry told us on

Shore Local Radio that Nucky had to marry his then girlfriend in order to have any contact with anybody on the outside. This was due to the fact that the law would not allow prisoners to have contact with anybody that was not immediate family and he had no living relatives when he went to jail.

He handled all of his business affairs thru his wife while he was serving his time. Ferry also added that Nucky was famous for having his big Sunday dinners and was able to get his wife to bring him the dinner Nucky’s personal chef made every Sunday night to the jail for him.

The great thing about author Frank Ferry is that he is a wealth of information and is more than happy to tell you stories about the history of the Atlantic City area. He has lived here in South J e r s ey his whole life and genuinely cares about our area’s rich history being preserved for many years to come. With Nucky, Ferry’s goal was to compile FBI reports, trail records, IRS records, among other credible sources to really illustrate who Nucky was. He was nothing like that diminutive mobster many have seen him portrayed as on Boardwalk Empire, he was a beloved local South Jersey politician who is arguably credited with making Atlantic City a premier destination in first half of the 20th century. While his business dealings could be considered shady, there is no denying he left his imprint in history and heavily influenced our country’s future.

Discover OC Island Kids Mom Runs Business to Meet Daycare Needs

R

achel Holloway understands the need for good day care from personal experience. A few years ago, when she moved to Ocean City with her two sons, she had a plan.

She would continue with her career, which she’d had for ten years at that point, as a high school English teacher. Unfortunately, however, when she began looking for day care options that would accommodate her young boys when she was at work, she found that day care was in short supply.

She thus did what every good mom does in a difficult situation: she came up with a creative solution. That creative solution was OC Island Kids, the day care facility she now runs to meet not only her own family’s needs, but also the needs of lots of other Ocean City families.

OC Island Kids, a state licensed child care center, provides a learning environment which is based on Montessori educational values, combined with the Creative Curriculum approach which is used in Ocean City School District’s preschool program. Both approaches-Montessori and Creative Curriculum-are centered around a belief that learning is most effective when it is child-driven and allowed to occur within a context of play. With this sort of philosophy as its underpinning, OC Island Kids

offers a program which is less rigorously structured than traditional teaching environments, but just as committed to the learning needs of its students.

A typical day at OC Island Kids begins with free play and then progresses through lessons according to the interests of the students present. Children may spend their time in Dramatic Play, during which they might avail themselves of the brightly colored toy kitchen set in one corner of the room, or they may spend time in Block Play, during which they might build towers or castles. However, students spend their time, a low

student-to-teacher ratio allows staff to interact effectively with them during their activities.

Story Time happens every day, and if the sun is out, the kids get to listen to their story while sitting in a lovely sunlight-flooded area at the front of the room. An Arts and Crafts activity is also presented regularly, like the one they did recently which involved making colorful butterflies from coffee filters. The butterflies were afterwards secured to a tree mural which adorns one of the center’s back walls, and boy, did they make a pretty sight!

The children also take walks outside, blow bubbles, and play hopscotch.

Throughout all of their daily activities, a focus is placed upon building self-esteem, independence, and good decision-making abilities. When the children eat the lunches that they bring from home, they are encouraged to eat the healthiest items first, while sitting together as a family, listening to each other and learning manners.

The center has two important exclusions.

There are no peanuts or tree nuts here, so parents worried about exposing their children with allergies to these things need not be con-

cerned. The center is also an electronic free zone, forcing the kids to find things to do with their time besides staring at screens. Rachel laughs and says they’re bringing back the lost art of playing board games.

While poetry can have as many themes as there are stars in the sky, the poets I like the best write about healing and connecting to other people. I connect best with poets that can write about people with problems and their journey toward solutions and healing. These three poets capture the experience of broken people, picking up the pieces and becoming something new again.

Serena Joy - Though Ms. Joy’s home is in Wilmington, Delaware. One of my friends told me “We’re claiming her. Serena’s South Jersey too now. If Delaware acts right we’ll let them share Serena” I suspect whenever Ms. Joy takes a stage outside of her hometown people lay claim. That is because poems like American Girl (which can be found on youtube.) speak to the hurt one does to one's self

with trying to fit into American "norms.”

You realize by the time she’s finished her poems American Norms are very abnormal and dangerous. You get the message that the most beautiful and revolutionary thing you can do is love yourself today.

Ambition The Poet - ATP is the newest poet I have become aware of, however his impact on my ears had me asking . “Where have you been?” At his first appearance on a stage in Atlantic

City he shared a poem called “If You Feel Me?” Ambition proceeded to share his poetry by walking around the room and engaging the crowd personally and discussing the lessons about self image he received from TV shows he grew up with like “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” The crowd demanded that he share more.

Ambition The Poet brings more than just words to the stage he carries a powerful message.

The Taste of Italy is in Northfield

Sharon Hollingsworth - Ms. Hollingsworth is the most seasoned of this new class. Online you can find books and music from Ms. Hollingsworth and she is working on several exciting projects to be released later this year.

Her book and CD are both called Not Another Tear: Moving From Pain to Purpose. What I love about Hollingsworth is that she does not spend the whole time blaming people for the choices she made in her life. While she still holds accountable the people that wronged her and should have done better by her, Hollingsworth steps up to acknowledge the mistakes she’s made as well. Her goal is to encourage the reader to cry, mourn and not down play their pain. The end goal, however is for the reader to push through because we all deserve the great life that waits us on the other side of our painful pasts.

Shore Local Talent: Kenny Jeremiah, South Jersey’s Resident Soulman

H

igh-energy and world class showmanship are just a few of the great things you could associate with long time Philadelphia and South Jersey musical entertainer, Kenny Jeremiah. You may know him from listening to 92.1 WVLT up in the Vineland area or you may have already experienced his electric performances firsthand in Atlantic City. However, what some people might not know is that Kenny Jeremiah has been in the music industry and a pioneer of “The Sound of Philadelphia” for well over 50 years.

One of the original founders and lead singers of The Soul Survivors band back in 1964, Kenny Jeremiah achieved great success on the top charts with hits such as “Expressway to Your Heart” and “Explosion in My Soul”. Before creating this iconic band with Richie and Charlie Ingui, Kenny worked at a bank in Philadelphia back in the 1960s while he performed on the side. His boss and colleagues would often tease him for trying to make it as a musician by telling Jeremiah that it was an impossible dream to achieve. May 1st in 1966 is when Kenny Jeremiah walked up his

boss and told him he was quitting to become a musician full-time. He called up Charlie and Richie Ingui, who then also quit their respective jobs permitting the legendary band, The Soul Survivors, to be formed on that fateful day.

The Soul Survivors pioneered The Sound of Philadelphia movement back in the 60s with their horn-driven and funky sounds that went on to become immensely popular in the 60s and 70s all around the world.

“In June 1967, after we had a number one hit in New York, I went back to the bank that I used to work for and went right to my old boss to open an account for our number one record ” said Jeremiah, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing the baffled expression on his former boss’s face.

Since the beginning, Kenny Jeremiah has always had a passion for showmanship. When he was 13, he saw little Richard in concert and was inspired by his incredible and outlandish performances. He believes that getting the audience to react and become engaged in his music and performances is the best part about his job. When you see a Kenny Jeremiah performance, you’re not just getting a great singer, but a showman who knows how to work the stage.

“This isn’t a job to me”, explains Jeremiah, “I wake up every morning and thank God for allowing me to do what I love.”

In October of 2017, Kenny Jeremiah and The Soul Survivors were honored by receiving a star on the Philadelphia Walk of Fame along with other artists such as Patti LaBelle.

Their star is located right in front of the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.

Kenny Jeremiah’s musical range is very broad. He enjoys performing almost every musical genre there is. He enjoys performing the classic hits from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Andrea Bocelli to more modern hits like songs from Enrique Iglesias and other Top 40 artists.

Jeremiah strives to make sure his audiences have the best time at his shows and loves getting feedback from them. Definitely check out his amazing performances on YouTube.

Currently Jeremiah has a plethora of live events coming up including performing at the 5th Annual Richland Village Festival on May 11th and opening up for the famous Frankie Valli tribute band Lights Out in Blackwood, NJ on May 18th. Kenny Jeremiah is always keeping himself busy and when he’s not performing, he often

is writing and recording music. He just wrote and is currently recording a song called “The Soldier’s Prayer” which is a tribute to all those who have served in the Armed Forces.

The song will be out on Memorial Day 2019.

Hometown Hero: Michael McMahon Breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health

I

f there were a fan club for Michael McMahon, he’d have a big one. It seems like he’s always working on a goal. Throughout his life, there have been many set and many met. Right now, he’s working on kicking the smoking habit.

With a mix of emotion and matter-of-factness, he can talk with unexpected ease about growing up with undiagnosed ADHD and anxiety. While in college, he faced unplanned fatherhood, then marriage, followed by a decision to drop out of school. Soon after came a diagnosis of major depression and substance use disorder.

Though he wasn’t able to talk openly about his feelings for many decades, he now shares his story when and where it makes a difference.

Michael’s job at The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County gives him opportunities to talk to police several times a year.

During Crisis Intervention Training, which is a

collaboration between law enforcement and the mental health system, he describes his experience as a young man who fled at the approach of a Camden police officer because of his anxiety.

The purpose of telling his story is to influence the response of police to those in psychiatric crisis, which is a topic covered by the national news on a regular basis.

His job as a peer also gives him the opportunity at times to share parts of his story with individuals who are in recovery and seeking help for mental illness. Michael lives as an example of what can be accomplished.

He gives hope where hope is needed.

Michael also has given interviews to reporters and radio show hosts about his life, including very dark times when he attempted suicide as a result of his major depression.

He hopes telling his story touches others and raises awareness. This is especially important to Michael because he is not the only member of his family to live with substance use and mental health disorders. He

can count back four generations of family members affected by one or the other.

The newest way Michael is making a difference is by facilitating a support group, Grief and Loss, which is specifically for those who have lost a loved one to substance use disorder. This group will be held in six-week increment during various times of the year through the Mental Health Association in Atlantic County. It’s yet another way he uses personal perspective, pain and experience to help others.

Resilience is worth recognizing. Here’s a man who went undiagnosed as a child. He says he didn’t do much better than C averages in school when it was so hard to focus. As an adult, a doctor diagnosed him with ADHD. With a new medication, he was able to return to college and finish at the top of his class. Yet another goal met.

People who have overcome so much, like Michael, are quietly having a positive impact in many, many ways. It’s worthwhile to make some noise about them.

The Things We Take For Granted

A

s I watched the flames envelop the famed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, like most of the rest of the world I was overcome with a flood of emotions and thoughts. I love history and to watch a structure destroyed that has stood for over eight centuries, I couldn’t help but think about all this mighty edifice has withstood.

Construction on this medieval Gothic cathedral began in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII but wasn’t completed until 1345.

If the walls and stained glass, the impressive icons and statues could talk, the stories they could tell. Within these walls, in 1431, Henry VI of England was crowned King of France.

Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor there in 1804 and in 1909 Pope Pius X beatified the late Joan of Arc who had been burned at the stake centuries earlier. This is not the first fire to destroy the cathedral.

According to the book, The Engineering of Medieval Cathedrals, the current structure replaced an earlier church destroyed by fire in the 13th century.

It is amazing to me how a structure of this magnitude can withstand centuries of weather beating, world wars and revolutions and yet be destroyed by fire in a

matter of hours.

It caused me to think about the things around us that we take for granted; not only the things, but the people. They are right in front of us and so many times we become so consumed with navigating our day to day, going from one thing to the next that we can forget about what is right in front of us. I wonder how many Parisians took the time each day to glance up at “Our Lady” as they passed by. How many ever paused to appreciate the rich history this edifice embodied?

It’s times like these that (at least for me) can cause us to stop, hit the reset button and make a conscious effort to get back on track so to speak. I know it can sound a bit philosophical, but too often we can get up each day, take the sunrise for granted, the ability to inhale fresh air and simply go about our day.

We can also tend to take for granted the people around us who mean the most. So, it may be a stretch. But I’m using the tragic fire to help me reset my compass this week. I hope you’ll join me by opening your eyes to all that is around you and be grateful because like the centuries old cathedral, it can all be reduced to ash within hours.

How to Enjoy Early Season Produce is still early in the season, our farmers are selling fantastic early season vegetables. If you are looking for strawberries or blueberries, you still have to wait about two months for those. Here are some ways to enjoy what New Jersey growers have to offer.

Greens are in abundance. One of my favorites is kale. There are different varieties of kale and so many different ways to enjoy it. My favorite is

in salad. Kale is a bit thicker and heartier than other greens. To soften it up, give it a good massage. Yes, you read that right. Once you wash and cut it, massage it for a few minutes in a bowl to soften and mellow the taste. I also enjoy adding kale to smoothies (kids love this and don’t know they are eating it!) as well as adding it to soups. I even add it to baked goods. You can find great recipes on my blog for banana kale muffins and slow cooker bean tortellini soup that both feature kale.

Spinach has been in abundance at the farmers market too. As with kale, I love a good spinach salad. I also love adding spinach to eggs. With Easter coming up this weekend, you could make a delicious spinach frittata. One of the most popular recipes on my blog is for easy spinach manicotti. While I typically use frozen spinach in the winter when I don’t have access to local, fresh spinach, I will opt to use fresh spinach in the warmers months. Simply sauté the spinach

in some olive oil and add it to the ricotta and mozzarella mixture. My kids will gobble up the manicotti which makes me happy to see them eating their healthy greens.

Another green that you will see a lot of this time of year is arugula. Not sure if you like arugula? If you come to the farmers market, ask for a taste.

Arugula is a delicate green with a peppery taste. I prefer to balance arugula in a salad with something sweet like pomegranate seeds or sliced fruit.

Arugula has a very distinct taste and when it’s fresh, it’s so good.

Besides these greens, you may also be seeing beets at the farmers market. I picked up some last week that were absolutely beautiful. Not sure what to do with beets? I didn’t start eating them until I was an adult and now I can’t get enough of them.

Peel and roast them and from there, you can add them to salads or make beet hummus or beet pesto (recipe on my blog). I have also been known to make noodles out of beets with my spiralizer and add them raw to salads. Beets have so many nutritional benefits so I try to incorporate them into my diet whenever possible.

When you buy produce locally at a farmers market, not only are you supporting a small business, but you are getting the freshest of the freshest.

id you ever notice someone losing a lot of weight, then POW! The next time you see them again, it’s all back on and 10 more pounds then when they started on their weight loss diet.

This may not sound sexy, but it is really the missing ingredient in most conversations about weight loss. How many people do you know who have lost hundreds of pounds of weight over their lifetimes, only to gain it back (and more sometimes)? Unfortunately, it’s more then less.

While weight loss is certainly an important topic, I’m going to say something that might surprise you.

We already know how to lose weight.

The issue that people (including scientists and doctors) need to think more about is maintenance of weight

after weight loss.

It is estimated that about 80% of people who lose a significant amount of weight will gain it back. Sometimes people will actually gain more weight than they initially lost. Many people attribute this to lack of self control, but it turns out that there are physiological processes that make weight maintenance very difficult.

I see this happen quite often.

Most people think that we regulate how much food we take in daily by actively deciding how much to eat. This could not be further from the truth. Food intake is largely controlled by unconscious processes.

The body releases all sorts of hormones from the fat cells and the gut that act on the brain. The brain then releases chemicals that regulate appetite and energy expenditure. Studies have shown that weight loss caus-

es a decrease in the hormones that lower appetite (leptin) and increase our main hunger hormone (ghrelin).

This causes the familiar increase in hunger that usually accompanies weight loss.

It makes sense that weight loss would cause you to burn fewer calories on a daily basis (i.e. slow your metabolism down). After all, it takes less energy to fuel a smaller body. Some studies even show that the metabolism decreases more than would be expected simply from the weight loss. Studies also show that the muscles become more efficient with weight loss, meaning that doing the same activity burns fewer calories.

So losing weight causes people to be hungrier and have a slower metabolism at the same time. Is there no hope? There absolutely is hope.

While maintenance after weight loss is challenging, it is possible.

Here are a few things I suggest to implement during weight loss: • Eat breakfast every day • Eat a low fat diet • Exercise frequently • Monitor your weight • Decrease screen time If you lost your weight on your own, get some nutritional guidance and buildings to help keep the weight off . Have your metabolic rate tested.

This gives you a full proof way to know how many calories your body burns at rest and gives you a blueprint to your body for some definite answers . Sometime things need to be changed up and the experience of a nutritionist can help do just that so you keep your weight off for a long time to come!

Inside AC with AC Mike

reams can come true, I found this out first hand this week. Since I was 10 I had a persistent urge to share my experiences, big and small, with the world; a delicious meal, an Eagles victory, a Phillies loss or even a Sunday afternoon bike ride down the Atlantic City Boardwalk. And although it’s always been there nudging at me, I just never imagined how my dream would ultimately manifest itself until Paul Kelly, General Manager of Longport Media Studios, gave me that chance early this week as he offered me a chance for my own slot on WOND 1400AM News Talk Radio. My words: “Where do I sign?”

Folks, I say this with all humility, as I always wanted to do radio, print and TV, I am now learning how to leave the 9 to 5 mindset behind after years of working for someone else, fulfilling others expectations of me, to now taking charge of what I want. I am excitedly stepping out of my comfort zone and into the unknown. With only good intentions, all the support I have and that 10 year old boy reminding me to stay true to our dreams I know with the Lords and others help I will be able to rock this!

I’m indebted to WOND’s Paul Kelly, along with Shore Local News Magazine’s Cindy Fercsh and Mike Yanneillo’s for their vote of confidence in me to share the news of our city and beyond. I also owe a huge shout out to Dan Klein for welcoming me on his Friday WOND Klien Time show as a co-host.

This week in AC, I started off with a 70’s make-over by throwing on my bell-bottoms and platforms to boogie down to Disco Live presented by Hard Rock Atlantic City. The soundwaves room turned into a time travel machine and took us to the seventies for 90 minutes of dancing and grooving out to the sounds of the Bee-Gees, Donna Summer, ABBA, KC and the Sunshine Band, Barry White and much more. Disco Live is a must see for all young and old!

I then headed over to Ocean Casino and Resort. I was invited by Coach Ron James to be the Atlantic City ambassador to the entire AC Blackjacks Arena Football League Franchise for the first full team meeting. I said hello to the the team and went over the ins and outs, do’s and don'ts Of Atlantic City and the surrounding areas. I shared with them some favorite places to grab a bite , rent a bike and visit as a team or to take their families such as Gardeners Basin, the Absecon lighthouse, and Steel Pier. I spoke about the history of AC and Dr Jonathan Pitney vision for Atlantic City as a health and wellness destination. I informed the men of the many wonderful people we have living here and how ethnic our community is which is huge part of Atlantic City’s charm.

It was truly an honor to address and greet these eager young professional football players about Atlantic City as a whole. I got high off of the energy in the room that was full of ambition, pride and positivity. I could see

it in their eyes and their desire to bring an Arena Football League Championship Parade down the AC Boardwalk at summer’s end. It truly is amazing to watch these young men as they are crafting their profession and embracing Atlantic City.

Monday morning was their first day of camp at Euro Sport in Egg Harbor City. It seemed like they studied the playbook for months although it was only over night as Coach James had the players get right to work in drills and formations, all which were crisp, smooth and spirited.

Wednesday evening felt like a mini escape to Italy with great pisans as we celebrated a family style meal at Chef Vola’s.

The Esposito brothers had us eating more than we could handle, we just couldn’t resist; the veal, the steaks, the pasta were out of this world or at least felt like out of our country.

The next big event of the week was to the Atlantic City PAL to check out Boxing World Champion’s Christina Hammer and Claressa Sheilds at the open media workout. The ladies showed their skills and addressed the media and public about the Saturday night battle. The fight was broadcasted on Showtime and with a worldwide audience Atlantic City was shining! Claressa Shields proved to be too much for Hammer with a unanimous decision to win the undisputed middle weight champion of the world here at our own Boardwalk Hall this past April 13th. What an event to see-and be a part of!

Earlier that Saturday, I woke up to race down the Atlantic City Expressway to catch the scrimmage between the AC Blackjacks and the Philadelphia Soul in Pitman, NJ at Total Turf Experience. The Blackjacks represented themselves very well. Coach James and the boys are on the right path as they prepare for their season opener ironically against the Philadelphia Souls. This will be the first installment of the AC Expressway Rivalry happening in Philadelphia on April 27th.

I then hopped back in my car and headed to Resorts Casino and Hotel to make the welcoming speech at orientation for the Miss New Jersey Education Foun-

dation weekend.

The Miss New Jersey Candidates and their teams from all over our state attended and spent the weekend in Atlantic City at the home of the upcoming competition, Resort Casino and Hotel. Again it was an honor bestowed upon me by Executive Director David Holtzman to Be the Atlantic City Ambassador to greet the young ladies their teams and families to our beloved Atlantic City, Saturday evening, they were able to share a little about what social platform they are representing at a Gala. As a proud executive board member I was happy to welcome the candidates and board members to Atlantic City. Miss New Jersey will run from June 12 to the final being on the 15th. Sunday was spent with Anthony Catanoso at the Steel Pier. The annual Easter Egg Hunt was a thrill for the kids, they got to collect and crack a magnitude of eggs to find out if they got games at the arcade, candy, toys or free rides. They loved it. Tips for Traveling with Kids

ost local schools will be closed for spring break next week and many of us will be traveling.

Whether you are traveling an hour to visit grandparents or hopping on a plane, this can be a stressful experience when young children are involved. It certainly gets easier as they get older (I promise) but I wanted to provide some helpful tips that have gotten us through long travel days over the years. Just remember, the day ends eventually. This is what I always told myself and it helps.

If you are traveling by car, there are several things to consider. First, think about what time of day to leave.

If your kids still take naps, try to plan the car ride around naptime. It’s much easier to do that than to try and get them to nap in a new place.

If you are traveling for a longer period

of time, look for places along the way to stop where your kids can release some energy. For us, sometimes this is a playground and when they were younger, I always looked for children’s museums along the way. If you are flying and have an early morning flight, staying at an inexpensive hotel by the airport can sometimes be helpful.

Let’s talk about one of my favorite topics, food.

Airport and rest stop food can be very unhealthy and very expensive. Whenever possible I pack our meals for traveling even if it just includes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Snacks are key during long car rides.

Look for ones that are appealing but not too full of sugar. My kids each get a water bottle by their seat and know not to drink too much because we try to limit the amount of stops to make.

Here is the trickiest part of traveling with kids…entertainment. How do you keep kids amused for hours

on end and avoid meltdowns?

Well, if I knew the answer to that question I would be a millionaire but I’m not. There are certainly plenty of ways to keep them occupied. Get to know Five Below.

When my kids were very young, this was my go to place for long car rides. I would load them up with new coloring books and stickers, all for less than $10. Now that my kids are older and are readers, I go to the library and load them up on books. You have to be careful with this one because when you travel somewhere with a library book there is a good chance that it will get left behind.

We do let our kids have some screen time in the car which of course they love. We usually download a movie for them to watch.

I try to find movies that are both pleasing to them and the front seat listeners. We recently let them watch Field of Dreams which was an oldie but a goodie. Audiobooks are also

a great way to pass the time while keeping everyone engaged together.

Traveling with kids can definitely be stressful but most of the time it is worth it. As they get older, give them a travel journal. Even if they can’t write yet, they can draw pictures which will spark memories of their adventures. If you are traveling with your kids over spring break, have fun and try to take the stress out of the experience by planning ahead. If you have other good travel tips, I would love to hear them!

Buona Pasqua Means Happy Easter

aster, or Pasqua, is the second most important Italian holiday after Christmas. The days leading up to Easter include solemn processionals and masses, but Easter weekend itself is a joyous celebration marked with many traditions.

The holiday is a three-day weekend with the Italian observance of Pasquetta, or little Easter, celebrated on Easter Monday and which is a public holiday. While Christmas is always celebrated with family, many people celebrate Easter with friends.

In fact, a famous Italian saying is: “Na-

Since Easter marks the end of Lent, which traditionally required abstinence from meat, eggs and butter, food plays a large part in celebrations.

Traditional foods across Italy vary by region, but usually include lamb or goat and eggs (symbols of renewal), artichokes, and special holiday breads. Colomba, which means dove in Italian, originated in Lombardia (the northern region home to Milan).

It is similar to the Christmas bread Panettone in its sweet flavor and soft texture, but is studded with almonds, orange peels and usually covered with icing or powdered sugar. The dove is a sign of the beginning of spring as well as the symbol of the Holy Spirit in Catholicism.

top, is popular in Trieste. And one of the southern Easter traditions is Casatiello, found in Naples. It’s a salty cake containing cheese, sausage, salumi and sometimes hard-cooked eggs. In Sicily, special Easter cookies called aceddu cu’ l’ova, made with farina and flavored with lemon or orange, are shaped like doves and given to family members and friends as a sign of affection and good luck.

Unlike America, you won’t see the Easter Bunny in Italy. However, in the 15th century Italians would color hard-cooked eggs with herbs, flowers and onion skins, and that tradition continues today with children coloring eggs with natural dyes – red beets for red, onion skins for brown, saffron for yellow and blueberries for blue.

But the most exciting thing for children is to receive an oversized hollow chocolate egg that contains a surprise toy inside.

A typical Easter dinner may start with soup, such as the Brodetto Pasquale of the Basilicata region, which includes both lamb and vegetables in a style similar to minestrone. Stracciatella, or Italian egg drop soup, is popular in Rome.

Growing up, our Easter dinner started with several appetizers including Vitello Tonnato, thinly sliced roasted veal topped with a tuna sauce and capers; Fritto Misto, a combination of fried meats and offal from veal served with Bagnetto sauce; Antipasto with Sweet Lemon Polenta, which is still served with my Antipasto at Mama Mia’s restaurant; and In Carpione, cod or trout sautéed and marinated in red wine and vinegar – or agrodolce style, which means sweet and sour.

Our pasta course would be Agnolotti Ravioli, lamb-filled ravioli, served with Al Pin sauce, a roast beef au jus reduction. The main course was roasted leg of lamb and Bollito Misto, a variety of boiled meats served with Bagnetto sauce and garnished with roasted potatoes, glazed carrots and

string beans and, of course, accompanied with Columba bread.

One of the most popular Easter desserts is Pastiera Napolentana, which now is a year-round favorite.

It’s made with creamy ricotta and semolina, flavored with lemon zest and orange-blossom water, and includes wheatberries and orange peel. The traditional recipe takes several days to make. Although I love it, I (and I think our readers) do not have the time to make this over several days. So, I usually make a ricotta cheese cake recipe from friend Lorraine Ranalli’s book, Gravy Wars.

Her recipe for Aunt Arlene’s Ricotta Cheese Cake is easy to make and contains all the flavors found in Pastiera Napolentana. I’ve included it with this article and hope you like it as much as I do.

Buon appetito!

Aunt Arlene’s Ricotta Cheese Cake Pastry (pie crust): • 6 tablespoons soft butter • 1/2 cup sugar • 2 cups flour • Pinch of salt • 2 large egg yolks • 3 to 4 tablespoons water

Filling: • 3/4 cup candied cherries • 1/2 cup butter, softened • 1-3/4 cups sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract • 3 large eggs, beaten • 2 pounds whole milk ricotta cheese • 1 tablespoon grated orange rind • 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind To begin the pastry shell, mix the butter and sugar until it is fluffy. Add the flour and salt and mix well. Blend in the egg yolks. Add enough water to make the dough manageable. Knead until smooth on a lightly floured board.

Chill for one hour.

Set aside 1/4 of the dough for decorating the top. Press the remaining dough evenly against the bottom and sides of a 9x13-inch baking pan. Set aside.

Cut the cherries in halves or quarters, depending on your preference; set aside.

Heat oven to 450°F. Beat butter with sugar, salt, vanilla and eggs until the mixture is fluffy; add remaining ingredients to the mixture, mixing well. Stir in cut cherries. Pour the

cheese mixture into the pastry-lined baking pan.

Roll the remaining dough to about 1/8-inch thickness and cut into strips that are no more than a half-inch wide. Cover the filling lattice fashion with the strips.

Bake for ten minutes at 450°F. Reduce temperature to 325°F. and bake 45 to 50 minutes or until filling is firm and the crust is brown.

Allow the cake to cool before serving.

By Pete Thompson Sports guy ’m really excited to be making my debut here in the pages of Shore Local. Their tagline is “Celebrating Life at the Southern NJ Shore”, and is there anybody who celebrates LIFE more than me…?

Maybe you remember me from my decade with TV 40. I was lucky enough to do the sports on WMGM-TV NBC 40 from 2004 until December 31st 2014 when the station went dark for good. Perhaps you’ve listened to me on the radio as I’ve spent a lot of time sharing the airwaves with Mike Gill on “The SportsBash” on 97.3 ESPN FM. Or perhaps you don’t know me at all.

But, here’s my promise to you…each week I’m going to try to bring you a little bit of sports, a little bit of entertainment, and a whole lot of FUN. My greatest compliment when I was on TV was when

someone said “I don’t really like sports, but I do like watching you!”

So, without further ado, here’s my first batch of ponderings: ●● Brett Brown is a great guy, but I worry if he’s the RIGHT fit for the Sixers moving forward. I was so excited when all the pieces came together, but now I worry about their ability to defend and I also worry that the current rotation of players never had time to jell because of injuries to Joel Embiid and others. ●● The Phillies have all the pieces to make a deep run this season, but they need to fix their bullpen issues, or else they might just make the playoffs and get run right on “OUTTA THERE”, as Harry Kalas used to say. ●● The Flyers have picked Alain Vigneault as their new head coach. I like the choice. Other than Joel Quenneville, he was the second biggest “name” coach out there, and he’s defensive minded, which I actually like. That said, unless he motivates the players to take accountability, I don’t think anything will change. I do like Carter Hart though…! ●● The Eagles have begun their offseason conditioning program, but #11 Carson Wentz is NOT on the field as of yet.

I felt his back was too balky and with so many youngsters booming the ball now, would they really be intimidated by a 43-year-old? But, that’s what makes Augusta so special. His round on Sunday wasn’t a career low or done by intimidating the field. He did it through course knowledge and smart play. It evoked memories for me of Jack Nicklaus in 1986 when at age 46, the Golden Bear showed that he had one more green jacket in him as he shot a 30 on the back nine and watched as the guys chasing him faltered. Which brings up the record….Tiger now has 15 major wins. Jack has 18. That’s the gold standard. A week ago, I would’ve said Jack’s record was safe…but now…?

Two of the majors coming up are at courses Tiger has played well on before. The PGA is in May at Bethpage Black and the U.S. Open is at Pebble Beach this year. A comeback for Tiger is great, but can you imagine what a grand slam would do?

A few more ponderings that aren’t sports related: ●● Game of Thrones – I’m sorry but I just don’t get it. Watched an episode or two when it launched, but it didn’t stick. It reminds me of the few times I played Dungeons & Dragons as a kid and I didn’t like that either. ●● On the flip side, I’m a sucker for both “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race”.

The first was the original reality show when it debuted as a summer replacement show in 2000. I’ve watched every season of “Survivor” ever since and continue to be captivated. “The Amazing Race” has ten teams of two competing in a race around the world.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s fun to see the different countries the teams go to and barriers / obstacles they face as they race. ●● And the last things I’ll leave you with from the world of entertainment…

Toy Story 4 comes out on June 21st, Stranger Things Season 3 drops on Netflix on July 4th.

Now you know where I’ll be on at least TWO days this coming summer…!

My Journey with Autism

here are few who do not know of someone who is on the spectrum or even related to a person with Autism, maybe a cousin, nephew, grandchild, or even a son or daughter.

At the age of 6, I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, one of four subtypes of Autism, and known as an “Aspie” (short for Aspergers Syndrome) since 11 years old.

Growing up on the autism spectrum is not easy. For parents, it creates a struggle of balancing the daily life of family and work, but also therapy schedules, school meetings, extra time to help with homework and due projects, and hopefully some “fun” activities. Much time is needed to transition into any sort of activity such as going from the car to the store, daily meals, bedtime and so forth. This is the reason many require a routine schedule as it leaves no room for unexpected changes.

For those on the spectrum, there’s the matter of dealing with sensory issues such as touching, crowds, clothing, bright lights or sudden loud noises, amongst other issues. The worst situation I had growing up was dealing with the school fire alarm. The noise level, associated with the flashing strobe lights, created sensory overload.

Anxiety is also a major issue for anyone on the spectrum, including myself. Any changes in routine, big or small, would throw me off. It takes a major effort to adjust to any schedule changes. Most people with autism can have behavioral issues of other forms.

Stressfulness or uneasy situations may cause stim-

ming or repetitive actions. These activities may include rocking back and forth, biting our nails or repeating words. For me, listening to music, going for a walk or a short bike ride helps me to refocus and get my mind back on track.

It may also be a challenge to try new foods. My diet consisted mainly of foods high in carbohydrates, such as pasta, pizza, hot dogs, chicken, etc. I never ate a lot of fruits or vegetables growing up because I never liked how it looked, or was bothered by the feel or texture.

It took years of hard work for me to begin eating a balanced, healthy diet.

Raising awareness for Autism is important, but it’s essential to have a strong community of support and allow children and adults on the spectrum to live a full life and feel fully accepted. We are fortunate to live in an area that provides support and opportunities for socialization, encouragement and group participation.

Autism Awareness Month is a time when ribbons and pins of colorful puzzle pieces are worn on lapels, backpacks and signs. Buildings are illuminated in blue lights and bubbles are blown to raise attention to the cause, but the greatest gift you can share with anyone, especially someone on the spectrum, is unconditional understanding and acceptance.

Real Estate Update A Look at Hammonton

ammonton was named for John Hammond Coffin, a son of one of the community's earliest settlers, William Coffin, with the "d" in what was originally "Hammondton" disappearing over time. It was incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 5, 1866, from portions of Hamilton Township and Mullica Township, NJ. President Ronald Reagan visited Hammonton during his 1984 re-election campaign. Reagan's speech highlighted Hammonton's status as "Blueberry Capital of the World". The town is know for its annual Red, White and Blueberry festival it has every June, which highlights the town to the South Jersey and greater Philadelphia area of its farming, blueberry and winery history.

With over 8700 acres of farmlands, Hammonton is also proudly known for its roadside produce stands delivering quality home grown peaked flavored vegetables and fruits and home made pies in the late spring, summer, and early fall seasons. All Hammonton blueberry farmers will give the same answer when asked what makes Hammonton such a prime location to grow blueberries? Answer: the soil, the weather and the geographic location. New Jersey's Outer Coastal Plain makes up nearly all of southern New Jersey. Its soils are more fine, sandy and acidic compared to the regions to the north due to its relatively young geographic age. These soil conditions allow the berries to thrive. Located within this geographic region is the New Jersey Pine Barrens, an internationally recognized biosphere that makes up 22 percent of the state's land area.

With 80 percent of New Jersey's blueberries coming from

Atlantic County's 56 farms, which are all located in or directly around Hammonton, it's understandable why the nickname exists. Cranberries are also grown in good numbers too in Hammonton, but are not as famous with their towns alignment with the desired healthy antioxidant food "the blueberry" .

Route 54, Route 30, the AC Expressway, all major roadways that lead over the towns landscaping with diverse appeal of a historic down area that still thrives well with long term businesses, along with the major shopping centers on Route 30 give variety for open shopping and services to its residents.

The public schools are known to be good over the years, along with its well known St Joe`s Catholic private school system too, Hammonton`s location is a nice halfway point for working households that one spouse may work towards or in Philly and the other working in or near Atlantic City. Because of its location just 30 miles to Philadelphia, schools, resale value of homes in Hammonton has usually remained steady in value.

Residential home sales are up 7.2% in units closed, year to year, the median sales price is up 3.9% and days on the market decreased 14.6% for faster sales with our improving economy.

The most expensive single family home to sell recently was a stunning executive home boasting just shy of 6,800 square feet, with a finished basement and 3 car garage, built in 1994 which sold for $775,000 this past February this year. The townhouse and condo segment saw a nice 16.7% increase in median sales price and days on the market decreased a healthy 34.1% for much faster sales. The town of Hammonton offers a nice real estate value for the money in today`s market.

rchitecture is art that people live and work inside of all their lives. Good architecture, just like any other art, like the painting and music which all of us like to fill our homes and businesses with, are designed, and planned, to make us feel safe, feel happy, become inspired by and be more productive.

“If you build a bad building, it will slow you down each day,” says Linwood architect Steve Fenwick.

“Building it right assists you in achieving your goals.”

A house is a shelter to protect us from the elements. A home, however, is where life happens and is where we are meant to grow up, grow old and enjoy our time.

“Designing a building or a home can be a little like cooking,” said Fenwick. “Your goal is to organize and prepare the best ingredients in order to fulfill the needs, wishes and wants of the people who’ll be living and working inside and around.”

A classic example of a customized designed home to fit the needs, wishes and wants of a homeowner is the house pictured by Fenwick Architects, and built by Sweeney Construction in 2011, and located on the Mullica River

in Washington Township, Burlington County. This Mid-Atlantic Traditional farm inspired house is a 2,800 square foot, three-bedroom country styled two story home with a threecar detached garage, or carriage house, with interiors designed by the home owner’s friend, and interior designer, Wendy Holden from Wendy Holden & Associates, LLC with landscape design by Joe Cugliotta of J. Cugliotta Landscape Nursery, Inc. The spacious front porch, which quietly overlooks the gently rolling Mullica River, was engineered purposely to provide the owner and her

guests with breathtaking views of the water with a coordinated access to it’s refreshing air flow for a pleasant and picturesque area perfect for entertaining and relaxing.

Good architecture has taste and is best when it meets, or matches with, the tastes of the people who’ll be living their lives, and spending the majority of their time, inside.

“Architecture is all about conveying people’s wishes and dreams into a 3-Dimensional reality,” said Fenwick. “ You work to come up with ideas and solutions to meet the needs and lifestyle of the client.”

Battling squirrels in the Garden hopes, seeking solace through cold winters that my hard work will be rewarded with beauty in the spring.

Alas, sneaky squirrels who care nothing about beauty, seem to dig up the bulbs simply for the sport of it, barely

y youngest child was very excited about eating fresh peas from our garden. We eagerly waited for tiny green sprouts to poke through the soil. Imagine my frustration to realize the seeds had been dug up by my garden nemesis - the squirrel! I’m convinced they are part of the curse, right up there with mosquitoes and greenheads. Don’t let those fluffy tails fool you, they are garden menaces that wreak havoc.

My battle began years ago when I attempted to feed the birds. Countless destroyed bird feeders later, I’ve learned a few tricks to save my tulips,

bird feeders, and lately, pea sprouts.

This latest plunder of my garden has given me renewed passion to research ways to protect my garden.

Allow me to share some old and new ways I have found to combat squirrels in the garden. Though this article focuses on squirrels, other critters like chipmunks and rabbits may be deterred by some of these same methods.

Tulips are among my favorite flowers. I plant them in the fall with high

eating them.

When planting tulips in the fall, plant the bulbs deeply. They will benefit from being planted 6-8 inches deep. Once planted, cover the area with chicken wire which can be removed after the ground has

frozen. In spring, squirrels will eat the heads of tulip survivors almost out of spite. Sprinkle red pepper flakes around your plants, or make make a liquid concoction of cayenne pepper, dish soap, and water. Sprinkle the pepper flakes or spray your potion around any plants squirrels eat. Besides tulips, squirrels enjoy eating camellias and all manner of vegetables, and have even eaten my New Dawn roses. Of course, pepper spray must be reapplied after a rain. Cayenne and pepper flakes can also be added to your bird feeder and it won’t b ot h er the birds. One year, I experimented by sprinkling mothballs and mothball flakes around the tulips. My husband wanted to know what that terrible

smell was. I replied, “it’s the smell of tulips not being eaten.” I wouldn’t recommend this method anywhere near edible plants or around curious neighborhood children. Other suggestions I’ve heard through the years are, human hair, blood meal, bone meal, and sharp gravel poured atop your flower bulbs. Lately, I have employed the services of a giant, dopey dog. But he’s more likely to befriend them.

After the squirrels stole the food of my children, my mission became urgent and I sought out and found new ideas that I immediately tested out. Armed with a new packet of peas, I surrounded the seeds with weapons. Actually it was shish kabob sticks and plastic forks with the tines facing up. Both of these are cheap solutions found at the dollar store. Don’t worry; no squirrels were injured during the making of this article. I strategically placed forks or skewers all around the planted pea seeds to keep the squirrels from attempting their main instinct in my garden—digging. I’m happy to report, after much anticipation, my peas are finally sprouting. Once they reach a certain height, I will add more protection by covering the peas with netting, which will keep birds and other critters out as well. I’m also planning on using netting on my strawberries.

A new idea that sounds rather fun is using peppermints or peppermint oil. Apparently, they are turned off by the smell. I’m looking forward to placing candy canes around certain squirrel delicacies—it would be a bit of a whimsical solution.

Another dollar store idea is using Vaseline. This is a fun way to protect bird feeders hanging from shepherd’s hooks. Slather Vaseline on the bottom of the hook, and place a squirrel baffle (found at hardware stores) under the feeder. Enjoy watching the squirrels slide up and down the pole.

Though I refuse to give up protecting the flowers I love, I also plant flowers that squirrels usually avoid.

Surprisingly, many spring flowers make the list. Alliums are in the onion family and squirrels find them distasteful. You can also safely plant, daffodils, hyacinths (including grape hyacinths), and snowdrops.

One more trip to the dollar store.

I’m looking forward to another idea I’ve stumbled upon. Rubber snakes are said to scare squirrels, but since fear of snakes might be the only thing I share in common with squirrels, I’ll probably just end up scaring myself.

But as the battle is intense, I’m ready for desperate measures.

The Elite Spectator

Senior Moments: A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings y now the world knows that Tiger Woods has won the Masters Golf Tournament in arguably one of the most epic comebacks in golf, if not sports history. I have eagerly anticipated watching this tournament which takes place over the course of four days. When I mentioned this to my family, one family member, a thirtyish former nationally ranked elite athlete commented to me “how can you sit and watch that for four hours?” Rather than be offended, I realized that what she said was understandable. I took up this game of self inflicted frustration rather late in life. Growing up in Margate my summers and even the falls were spent at the beach.

None of my friends nor their parents played golf so I had virtually no exposure to the sport. On TV when turning the channel (and yes, changing the channel was done by turning a knob) I switched right by golf without even giving it a thought. Baseball, for me had the excitement of Roller Derby when compared to golf. Years passed and along came a wife, kids a demanding job and responsibilities.

Friends who once lived in my neighborhood moved away. On trash day, I spotted a set a clubs sitting by the curb and thought what the heck and threw them into my car. A driving range was near my job so I thought I would hit a bucket of balls. How difficult can that be? I was quickly humbled by the number of swings I made with absolutely no contact with the ball or sent it scurrying along the ground like a cat with its tail on fire.

I consider myself as a fairly competent and competitive athlete so this epic failure at golf was gnawing at me. It must be the equipment.

Why else would someone throw a perfectly good set of clubs into the trash? I went to the local golf shop

and bought an off the rack mass produced set of clubs. Newly energized and optimistic, I quickly took my newly acquired golf clubs to the range with high expectations and the confidence to match. It didn’t take long but those expectations, like mythological figure, Icarus who once flew too high to the sun, came crushing to the ground. There were not as many missed balls but the worm burners were soon accompanied by shots sprayed in all directions and a couple that hit the wooden divider which separates the golfers. That sound, like a gunshot alerted anyone nearby to my pathetic attempts. I started going to the more affordable courses in the area, like Ocean City, Hamilton Trails, Greentree and aside from my poor play, found that walking the course and the time spent outdoors was a pleasant escape from a sometimes frenetic life. I also found that I have to bring along more golf balls.

If I was to be concerned about polluting the oceans with my plastic straws , the sheer number of my golf balls that went into the ponds and creeks on these courses could be worrisome. At least most of these were fished out by the grounds keepers. My interest in the game soon grew and I was impressed with the skill at which the professional golfers played but also the flubbed shots which prompted me to say “I could have done better than that!” So, to answer the question of how I could watch golf for four hours my reply was, “I worked at it.” Much like you can’t just run a four hour marathon without training, I trained years making sure I had all the requisite snacks and beverages as well as getting up every half hour or so to loosen up. In that answer, I felt a sense of accomplishment in that I was able to do something that this fine athletic specimen couldn’t and in so doing I witnessed one of the greatest moments in sports history.

The Hurley in the Morning Charity Delivers $40,000 and an Example of What a Non-Partisan America Could Be Like

The Hurley Line: n Friday, April 12, 2019, more than 265 people participated in the 11th Annual "Hurley in the Morning" Charity Dinner and Silent Auction held at the fabulous Resorts Casino Hotel Atlantic City.

Our event at Resorts raised $ 40,000, which will enable the "Hurley in the Morning" Charity to write many much-needed grants for not-for-profit organizations throughout our community and beyond.

Our Guest of honor and keynote speaker was Fox News personality Todd Starnes. Starnes is the host of his daily Fox News Radio nationally syndicated radio talk show, "The Todd Starnes Show." He is also a Fox News Channel star, Fox Nation Television (host of Starnes Country) and a best-selling author of multiple books.

His national program broadcast from Resorts, live from our charity event. Mark Giannantonio, Harry Hurley and Paul Rotella all made national appearances with Todd.

book "The Deplorables' Guide to Making America Great Again." Starnes personally autographed each book live from the event and included a personal inscription. Todd and I also spent three hours having a meet and greet with each guest and posed for a photo under our large event "step and repeat" special event banner.

Our annual event has really become such a labor of love to produce. First, I must attempt to properly thank Resorts President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Giannantonio, Jean Price and their amazing team for their supreme efforts to make our event (now twice held at Resorts) so incredibly meaningful and successful.

I literally can't find the words to appropriately thank Mark, Jean, Ed Batten, Eva Campbell, Joan Evans, Bill Schmal, Ed Hannon and so many other exemplary Resorts team members.

Our event directly touches the following Resorts Casino Hotel Departments: Executive branch, Hotel Front Services, Food and Beverage, Catering and Convention Services, Transportation, Security, Front Desk, Reservations, Communications, Entertainment and others.

Their many efforts and incredible attention to detail has made our event so wonderful. Even before this year's event had taken place, we had already committed to returning next year on Friday, April 17, 2020 to Resorts Casino Hotel Atlantic City.

We have our Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker set for next year. We'll announce it later this year on the "Hurley in the Morning" program.

I have so many people to thank, Our event Committee: Margie Hurley, Karen Hurley McDonald, Joseph Huntenburg, Gayle Collins and our Photographer, Don Hurley. They are so committed to the success of our event. Many photos will follow shortly.

The Reception food and beverage and our three course dinner was not banquet quality. It was every bit gourmet quality. It was as though one small table was being served and not hundreds of people all at the same time.

Regarding the event itself. Our list of attendees reads like a 'Who's Who' of our highest leaders in government at the national, state, county and local levels; along with the area's finest in business, industry and philanthropy.

United States Congressman, Jeff Van Drew welcomed our guests and introduced me. Congressman Van Drew was so kind in his introduction and demonstrated that he is a true statesman in our challenging times. We have been close friends for 30 years. Van Drew spoke at our event on his 100th day in the House of Representatives. He stayed until the very end of our event.

I had the pleasure to introduce our New Jersey State Senate President Stephen Sweeney, who delivered a positive message of unity during our program. Again, Steve and I have been good friends for almost thirty years.

demonstrated the meaning of what true friendship is all about. Paul had a prepaid Las Vegas trip that conflicted with our Charity Dinner. Paul cancelled his trip; He forfeited his money and instead decided to attend our event.

Paul made a surprise breaking news exclusive announcement at our event. He announced that on Thursday, June 13, 2019. The New Jersey Broadcasters will introduce the first-ever New Jersey "Broadcaster of the Year" Award.

I was beyond humbled that (live at our special event) Paul announced that the inaugural recipient at the upcoming NJBA June 12-13, 2019 Gala (to be held at The Tropicana Casino Hotel) will be me. I am beyond grateful to Paul and the NJBA selection committee for this special recognition that every broadcaster in our state strives to achieve.

Our country is presently so divided. I wish everyone could have been with us to see Republican, Democrat, Independent and unaffiliated Americans gather together in such a respectful manner. There was not one bad word shared amongst anyone.

It was not a bi-partisan event. It was a truly non-partisan event. It's an example as to how our country used to be. I strongly believe that we can become this way, again in this era.

In the end, we attracted so many people with divergent ideologies and who no doubt have significant differences in the philosophy of governance.

None of that mattered at our dinner.

"We aren't Republicans and Democrats. We are all Americans." When I spoke these words, our large crowd erupted in agreement. I desperately want us to become this kind of nation, again. I know that we can do it. What we need to achieve this is more leaders like Jeff Van Drew, Steve Sweeney, Chris Brown and Denny Levinson.

We need to embrace people (regardless of their party affiliation) who love our country more than their political party. The present divisiveness in our politics is toxic and we must band together and put a stop to it. Or else, we are going to lose our country.

I want to thank Todd Starnes for lending his star power to our annual charity event. Todd delivered a beautiful speech that was kind, eloquent, humble, serious and humorous; all at the same time.
