TICKETS FOR ‘BALLROOM WITH A TWIST’ GO ON SALE THURSDAY

What happens when you put “Dancing With The Stars,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “American Idol” together on one stage? You get “Ballroom With A Twist.”

Watching the cha-cha rattle on the television screen is one thing, but getting up close and live beneath the fringe, sequins, and booming sounds of rumba bass is another ballgame. “Ballroom With A Twist” brings a frenzy of sizzling dance moves by professional international dancers spanning the hot moves of samba, waltz, foxtrot, quickstep and jive.

If the dancers are not enough to keep you in awe, several of your favorite “American Idol” finalists will be joining the bill with their hit songs.

“Ballroom With a Twist” comes to the Ocean City Music Pier at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

TICKETS FOR COUNTRY MUSIC SHOW GO ON SALE THURSDAY

A summer concert featuring the Swon Brothers and Josh Gracin is set for 7:30 p.m. August 30 on the Ocean City Music Pier.

In 2013, the Swon Brothers became the first duo to make it to a season finale of “The Voice” with the help of their coach, Blake Shelton. The Swon Brothers released their self-titled album and received a nomination for CMA Vocal Duo of the Year in 2014. They have toured with Carrie Underwood and are now busy preparing new music, including the newly released single “What Ever Happened" from their new EP. Josh Gracin fans fell in love with the Michigan native and former Marine upon his ascension onto the country charts in 2004 with “I Want To Live.”

The hits came in short order for Gracin – the chart-topper “Nothin’ To Lose,” “Stay With Me (Brass Bed)” and “We Weren’t Crazy” all hit high on the Billboard charts. With the release of his new single, “Good For You,” Gracin is back on country radio. The release is a partnership between Reviver (David Lee Murphy, Michael Tyler, Tenille Arts) and his own Revel Road label. With the new single, Josh Gracin is armed with the best music of his career.

DOO DAH PARADE (April 13): “I Dream of Jeannie” star Barbara Eden will lead this year’s parade as grand marshal. The Doo Dah Parade was first held in Ocean City in 1986 as an event to herald the end of income tax season. It featured unusual entries like beach chair drill teams and fan clubs of legendary comedians. The free parade begins at noon on Asbury Avenue at Sixth Street, proceeds to 12th Street and turns east to the boardwalk, finishing at Sixth Street. For more than a decade, the parade has been anchored by a legion of dogs from the Basset Hound Rescue League.

MR. MATURE AMERICA PAGEANT (April 13): The pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 13 on the Ocean City Music Pier. The event is the first and only pageant of its kind in the United States.

Barbara Eden, who captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide in her run on “I Dream of Jeannie," will be host of this year’s show. The historic Flanders Hotel and Dietz and Watson return as sponsors this year. The madcap pageant celebrates men 55 years and older with competitions in talent, poise and interview categories. THE GREAT EGG HUNT (April 13 and April 20): Two massive egg hunts on the beach for children up to 7 years old. The free events start at 2:30 p.m. and feature areas divided by age group and for children with special needs.

EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE (April 21): A traditional non-denominational service by the sea. All are welcome. The service starts at 6:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier.

DUELING PIANOS SHOW (April 21): The Philly Keys will perform their hit dueling pianos show starting at noon. The performers will take a break for the annual Easter Fashion Promenade.

I

was walking towards the long Manco and Manco line that spanned the Ocean City boardwalk when I began to feel my heart pounding with anxiety. It was the first warm day of spring and the boards were packed. I was with my son, now an adult with autism and I knew how excited he was to get pizza on the boardwalk.

I also had been his mom long enough to know that crowds often overwhelm him and if I thought waiting in line was tough for me, I am reminded how incredibly challenging it can be for Jamie. With my motherly instincts on high alert, I quickly found a seat at the counter and sat him there while I waited for pizza.

Inevitably, someone in line made a nasty remark about my action. The mother lion in me was tempted to roar, “You have no idea what I'm dealing with!” But as I opened my mouth to speak, I quietly reminded myself that I have no idea what she is dealing with either. More likely than not, she is navigating her own set of life challenges that I can not see.

Instead, I remained quiet and smiled politely.

The saying goes, “play the hand you’re dealt.” Those hands often feel like worldly sized burdens that so many of us quietly walk around carrying every day. Cancer, financial stress, marital issues, illness, mental health, you name it!

We all carry something that the outside world can not

see at face value. Because we often keep these things to ourselves and navigate quietly, it is so easy to feel alone in our struggles.

If everyone wore a t-shirt with their issues written on them, how different would we respond to one another?

For instance, if that woman in the pizza shop was wearing a shirt that said “My mom just passed” or “I have stage 4 cancer” I probably would have hugged her instead of being tempted to snap at her. What if my shirt said “Severe autism, might have a major meltdown any second”? I highly doubt the woman would have made the mean comment about us grabbing a seat at the counter. If we could see one another's pain it would evoke compassion and empathy, which changes everything!

Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference. Put simply, it’s seeking to understand what it must be like to walk in another person’s shoes for a day.

It's what sets us apart and raises us to our best version of ourselves. Roots of empathy grow beautiful blossoms of kindness.

Kindness and empathy are the common denominator in all of the nearly one hundred hometown heroes we have featured In Shore Local.

Fête en Blanc. Somers Point does April in Paris

f you see a large crowd gathered on April 13th all dressed in white in Somers Point, you may find yourself doing a double take. Your eyes will not be deceiving you. This is the evening when the third annual Fête en Blanc will take place which is part of April in Paris. All during the month of April, activities are planned by the Somers Point Unique Experiences Club in cooperation with the Somers Point Business Association to bring French culture to the Jersey shore.

So what does wearing white have to do with French culture? Diner en Blanc is a concept that began in 1988 in Paris when a Frenchman invited friends to an elegant outdoor dinner party and told them to wear white so that they could find each other. The event now spans six continents.

While Somers Point Fête en Blanc is not officially connec ted to Diner en Blanc, the concept is the same.

The location of the gathering will not be disclosed until April 13th.

Attendees are instructed to wear all white, bring their own table, chairs, tablecloth and three-course meal.

While guests are not required to only bring white food, they are encouraged to do so in the spirit of Fête en Blanc. For those who do not want to cook, Gregory’s and Fitzpatrick’s are offering special menus that Fête en Blanc attendees can order to go.

A cash bar will be available as well as live music and entertainment. To

encourage people to be playful with the white t h e m e , awards will be given in three categories including best dressed, best tablescape

and best in show.

Can anyone just show up for Fête en Blanc? The answer is no. Seating will be limited to 100 people. If you missed out on pur-

chasing tickets, unfortunately they are no longer available so keep an eye out for next year’s event registration.

Tickets are $40 per couple and include two drinks. The event is always held outside and under a heated tent in the event of inclement weather.

Last year Fête en Blanc was held at William Morrow Beach in Somers Point. I’m excited to see what the location will be this year.

Fête en Blanc is intended to be an experiential event. Dressing in white and bringing one’s own table, chairs and food may not be everyone’s idea of a good time.

However, if you like being in the company of people who enjoy the journey and not just the destination, this may be for you. A lot of planning goes into preparing to attend Fête en Blanc from choosing a white outfit to packing a three-course meal.

As a former French teacher who sometimes feels like this area is lacking in cultural experiences, I think April in Paris is a fantastic way for people to connect with others who are interested in French culture. Besides Fête en Blanc, many other wonderful activities are planned like a screening of a French movie at Gregory’s on April 14th, a French wine course at Passion Vines on three Mondays and a night of jazz at Clancy’s by the Bay on April 12th. We are fortunate to have so many interesting and fun cultural activities close to home in the month of April!

Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City to Open New Teen Center An admirable campaign to invest in the youth of Atlantic City

T

he Boys and Girls Club on Pennsylvania Avenue in Atlantic City has been undergoing some major renovations in order to create a brand-new teen center for the youth of Atlantic City. The goal of the center is to transform the club into a haven for teens to practice career development, college prep, and empower them in a supportive and state of the art environment.

The AC Boys and Girls Club will now have a center for teens and a center for children to go to after school.

“We are trying to get these teens

on a path to go to college or go into a career” explained Maryann McElroy, the Director of Development of the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City.

The club wants the teens of Atlantic City to have a supportive and fun place to go to after school where they can receive college and career counseling, make new friends, find their

passion, and be in a positive environment. This new center has been seen as a necessity for the Boys and Girls Club because in the past, teens could not go to the club because the younger kids where occupying it during after school hours. Due to licensing issues, the AC Boys and Girls Club could not have both kids and teens in their programs right after school, so the teens would often not show up at all. This was seen as an issue because many teens can be susceptible to “risky” behaviors during after school hours according to the Boys & Girls Club and they want to put these teens on the right path to a great future.

“We are fully committing ourselves to creating career opportunities for

the teens of Atlantic City” said Michelle Carrera, the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City.

This new teen center will be laid out like a college campus, with many different areas to learn, connect, and seek out guidance from college counselors and local business owners. The new teen center will mainly focus on teaching Atlantic City teens various aspects of hospitality, technology, and health careers. There will be a new state-of-the-art kitchen area where they can learn all the different aspects of the food, restaurant, and hospitality businesses. Some teens might decide they don’t want to attend college and want to pursue a hands-on career right after graduating high school. This is something the

“We will have a ‘Dress for Success’ area where teens can pick out clothes they need for job interviews” explained McElroy, “we really want to make them feel empowered and boost their self-esteem.”

Carrera and McElroy have been hard at work raising their $2 million goal to fund and keep this new teen center afloat for the next five years.

They are so close to their goal and are always very gracious to accept donations. Borgata, ACCC, Stockton, and many other local casinos and businesses have donated to the Boys and Girls

money will go to yearly expenses and upkeeping of the new building among other expenses they anticipate having.

Burton launched his acting career while still a student at the University of Southern California. At age 19, he was cast in the groundbreaking role of Kunta Kinte in the landmark television series “Roots.” In recent years, he achieved further acclaim as Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” television series and films. But he says he is most proud of his role as host and executive producer of the beloved PBS children’s series “Reading Rainbow,” which aired from 1983 to 2009 and became one of the longest-running children’s television shows in history.

Smokey Robinson: Motown At Its Best

ans of all ages filled the Event Center in the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa to capacity Saturday night, March 30, 2019. Adoring followers from all over and every age came to be with Smokey Robinson, minus The Miracles. Called “America’s greatest living poet” by singer Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson brought his familiar soul and Motown sounds to Atlantic City once again to the joy of the excited crowd which included fans from age eight to eighty.

Robinson set the tone of the evening when he told his ardent fans, “We came to have fun and to have a good time, to be intimate, to touch and get to know each other better,” causing even more applause from Robinson’s admirers. The show ran ninety minutes and included twelve tunes and two medleys.

Near the end of the concert one of Robinson’s devotees came to the stage to give him a bouquet flowers and just to adore him.

Taking it all in stride, Robinson reached down and shook hand, accepted and acknowledged her gift.

Robinson was born February 19, 1940 in Detroit and began his career in the late 1950’s, when he met Motown founder Berry Gordy,

His best known albums were, “Quiet Storm,” (1975 and “Being With You”1981). Smokey Robinson has retained all of the attributes that made him so popular from the start. He is warm, friendly, and comfortable on stage. He still sounds like he did 35 years ago with a rich voice and a charming

New Marina to Make Somers Point a Premier Boating and Tourist Destination

or the first time in 31 years, a new marina will be created in state of New Jersey. The city of Somers Point has been fortunate enough to receive all the necessary state grants to dredge and build a new marina for easy boating access to the already famous Bay Avenue in Somers Point.

“We’re calling it the Somers Point Dock & Dine” said Greg Sykora, the chairman for economic development in Somers Point, “it’s all about creating a great destination.”

The dredging and construction have been taking place on the Somers Point beach and the Duke O’ Fluke pier since mid-February.

The dredging has already been completed ahead of their April 1st deadline and now parts are being delivered to the dredged area to begin building the actual marina. Greg

Sykora hopes to have the marina completed in time for the Somers Point Bayfest on April 27th, but if not, the goal is to be open by this Memorial Day. “Now people can come to our community from other communities” explained Sykora, “all by boat.”

Somers Point is separated by the Great Egg Harbor Bay from well know New Jersey shore towns such as Ocean City and Margate.

For those who have personal boats, kiosks will be available upon arriving at the marina

to claim your spot. For those who don’t have a boat, a water taxi service is currently in development for easy water transportation from the island towns to the new Somers Point marina. Recreational activities such as kayaking and paddle boarding will also be available for rent at the marina once completed. The Duke O’ Fluke will fortunately not be going anywhere as they will return to the marina with their fishing excursions once it has been completed.

It was not an easy task to make this project come

to fruition. It took a lot of negotiations and compromise between different organizations and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in order to make the new marina a reality. Sykora accredits much of the success to Jim Rutala of Rutala Associates, LLC. Sykora says that Jim Rutala was a crucial asset in acquiring the necessary grants for this project.

“We really wanted to show the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) that we were serious about this project” explained Greg Sykora.

Sykora states how ecologically cautious the dredging crew has been in order to abide by the state environmental laws. This is nothing new for the city of Somers Point, as the city is currently pioneering an environmentally friendly movement for the Mainland.

The currently underway “Spruce Up, Clean Up” event, pioneered by the Somers Point Economic Development Commission, is a city wide clean up campaign, partnering with the ACUA, that targets cleaning the local roads, bike path, historical sites, and more.

The entire city of Somers Point collectively want to show how beautiful their city truly is, especially once the new marina becomes open to the public.

Six Years Too Long

It’s heartbreaking to listen to the stories from families, who have suffered through the complex application process that in too many cases included the State losing their paperwork, giving them conflicting or just plain bad advice, changing their project managers multiple times, and causing unexplained delays.

“I did everything the State and my project manager told me to do. I filed my paperwork in time and everything went s m o ot h l y,” Fran Baronowicz told me when I met with a group of Sandy victims.

“After I finally moved into my house, the State, out of nowhere, sent me a bill for over $35,000, which is more than I make in a year.”

Many families, like Ms. Baronowicz, who lost nearly everything in the storm, who sunk every last penny into rebuilding their homes, following the guidance of their case managers, only to receive letters from the State requiring them to pay

Well, too many New Jersey families who weathered the full brunt of Superstorm Sandy for two days, have been mistreated for six long years. Sandy relief programs, were supposedly designed to help families get back in their homes and on their feet. While the storm broke houses, the bureaucracy is breaking the will, patience, and budgets of our middle class families. It’s well passed the time to bring closure to thousands of families who just want to move back into their homes and on with their lives.

The only thing worse than Superstorm Sandy has been the recovery, so it’s no surprise polls revealed a third of Sandy victims are still not in their homes.

Twelve percent have lost so much faith in the system they now consider themselves “permanently displaced.” I hear families say they wish they never applied for help.

thousands of dollars back (often called a “clawback”) without a clear explanation of why and offering no method to appeal the State’s decision.

We need a fair and sensible process to address clawbacks, which is I’ve joined with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle in sponsoring a bill to provide a process to assist families with clawbacks.

Additionally, I’ve also asked the Murphy Administration to find a way to provide relief to families administratively by making the process more consumer-friendly.

As if trying to weather the bureaucracy wasn’t enough of a burden, contractor fraud is further taking a toll on families and wasting limited public dollars and draining personal savings.

Angel Eguaras, for example, chose one of the State-approved contractors to rebuild his home, but that contractor failed to complete the work according to the architect and engineer’s specifications.

"The masonry work by the contractor violated the building code. The defects are so numerous that I was told the masonry should be demolished and reconstructed,” Mr. Eguaras told me.

Instead of holding their contractor accountable, the State initially put the burden of going after the contractor on Mr. Eguaras. In an even more bizarre twist, some victims of contractor fraud are actually being sued by the unscrupulous contractors.

resolved expeditiously, which is I why urged both the Attorney General and the Atlantic County Prosecutor to expedite the investigation and resolution of contractor fraud cases. In response, the Attorney General’s office assured me it will continue its work to have unscrupulous contractor suits against fraud victims dismissed.

While the AG’s office investigates contractor fraud, we still need to make it easier for victims of fraud to get their money back. However, the current application process is too burdensome for families. I’m sponsoring a bipartisan bill which will provide an alternate method for victims of fraud to apply for relief so they be made whole.

Moreover, the delays in construction and reimbursement have forced families to apply for foreclosure forbearance until they can get back on their feet. Unfortunately, many of these families are not back in their home and need more time, which is why I am sponsoring another bi-partisan bill to extend the forbearance program two more years.

Of course, the State needs to do more, and working with local families and the NJ Organizing Project, an advocacy group for Sandy-victims, I will continue my efforts to bring relief to families who are simply looking to move on with their lives. After six long years of mistreatment, our families know what I’m talking about and we need to bring them closure.

The Downside of Dairy

A

s a nutritionist, I’m often asked my opinion on dairy. Dairy products area major sources of saturated fat and contribute to approximately one-fifth of total saturated fat intake in the U.S. diet. Eating saturated fats increases bad cholesterol levels, called LDL, and may induce chronic inflammation, leading to an increase in cardiovascular disease, but specific fatty acids in dairy have been shown to lower heart disease risk in recent studies.

In studies shown, people with very high dairy consumption had a significantly higher risk of diabetes, a major risk factor for developing heart disease, compared with people who had a very low dairy consumption. While cheese and other dairy products are being reconsidered as heart-healthy add-ons, they are far from lifesaving, and most medical professionals still consider a balanced diet the healthiest option.

I recommend that people limit whole-milk dairy products and cheese portions. Cheese can be quite satisfying and filling for clients (in small doses ) trying to control their weight but it is

also often eaten in mindless settings like dinner parties, or even when some are too busy to prepare meals and grab and go on the run. This can lead to weight gain, which increases cardiovascular risk.

Milk can be nutritious but before your body can use any of these nutrients, you must first digest the ones that are too large to be absorbed as is. In some cases, however, your digestive system is unable to cope with all the components found in dairy foods.

Dairy foods contain variable amounts of saturated fats, depending on how the foods have been processed. A cup of whole milk, for example, gives you three times as much fat as a cup of 1 percent milk. These fats undergo digestion in your small intestine with the help of bile from your liver and the digestive enzyme lipase from your pancreas. Bile mixes with dairy fats and makes them more water soluble, after which lipase can digest the fats to fatty

acids and monoglycerides. These nutrients then exit your digestive system through the cells lining your small intestine, which deposit them into lymph fluid for transfer to your bloodstream.

Yes, there is sugar in milk and lots of it! The sugar found naturally in milk products is called lactose, made up of a glucose molecule attached to a galactose molecule. Some processed dairy foods – chocolate milk or flavored yogurt, for instance – might also contain added sugars, such as sucrose. As these c a r b o hyd r a te s pass through your digestive system, enzymes break them down to release single sugars small enough to undergo absorption. The digestive enzymes lactase and sucrase, both secreted by the cells lining your small intestine, digest lactose and sucrose, respectively, to their individual sugar molecules. The sugars can then move into your bloodstream to supply your cells with energy.

Although dairy foods can be nutritious for many people, a health condition known as lactose intolerance can make them problematic for your digestive system. In this disorder, your body produces little or no lactase, leaving you unable to digest milk sugar. As undigested lactose moves through your digestive tract, it can cause abdominal pain, gas and diarrhea. Consuming reduced-lactose foods or taking a lactase supplement can help you avoid these digestive issues. Another health problem caused by dairy foods is milk protein allergy, in which your immune system produces antibodies against these proteins. Although not a digestive disorder, it can result in gastrointestinal symptoms. If you have to avoid milk products due to an allergic reaction, you'll need to get milk’s beneficial nutrients from other food sources and supplements.

f you blinked you may not have noticed that we are already in April which means that school will be done in less than three months and your kids will be in need of activities. Have you started planning their schedules? For the past few years my kids have filled their summer calendar with weeklong camps. I love this for them because they get a variety of experiences. Each summer I sign them up for different camps than the previous summer, depending on what they are currently interested in. If you are still looking for ideas of what to do with your kids over the summer, here is some inspiration broken down into different categories.

Sports and outdoor camps are always a hit with my kids. They have done camp at Bright Stars Gymnastics for the past few years which they love. They do a variety of activities which

include swimming, gymnastics and crafts. The nice thing about Bright Stars is that you don’t have to commit to a whole week or series, you can just do drop in days. My son is interested in surf camp this summer which I’m most likely going to sign him up for. I have heard good things about Stacey’s Surf Camp in Margate as well as OCNJ Surf School in Ocean City. I also have my eye on lifeguard camp through Margate City Beach Patrol. Dates for that camp should be available in May. If art is what your children are interested in, take your pick! For the past few summers my kids have taken excellent programs at the Ocean City Arts Center. Two summers ago they enrolled in a session devoted to making art out of recycled household items and last summer they absolutely loved their Star Wars art camp. Sea La Vie in Ventnor offers themed sewing programs that get rave reviews and The Ventnor City Cultural Arts Center also offers a variety of children’s art classes.

Theater camps have become very popular in recent years. The Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point offers program for children as young as three and going up to age eighteen.

Many of my friends who had children participate last summer raved about the Gateway summer

program. Be-You-Ti-Ful Arts in Oceaview also offers summer theater camp as does Sojourn Productions in Egg Harbor Township.

Science camps are also very popular with kids. Last summer I enrolled my twins in a weeklong STEAM camp with the Amazinators.

They loved it so much that I enrolled them in the two-week program this summer for their age group. The EHT Police Athletic League (PAL) offers STEM camp with a focus on robotics.

While I am all in favor of taking it easy in summer and enjoying unscheduled days, my kids need some weeks to be scheduled for camp.

They are very much looking forward to having a variety of fun experiences this summer. What kinds of activities will your kids be doing this summer? I would love to hear about them!

The Juggling Act of Life

don’t know about you, but I have a lot going on. Every day something new gets added to an already crowded calendar.

From chores around the house, to family and work obligations; the list grows longer each day. Or at least it seems that way. At some point, I’m forced to prioritize what gets done now and what can wait. I’m willing to bet your life isn’t much different. Have you ever compared your hectic life to the art of juggling?

I’m reminded of the routine on the old Ed Sullivan Show where the juggler would try to balance spinning plates on the top of a stick, juggling fire sticks and we’d all watch, wondering how it all kept in motion. One misstep and it all crashes down.

It made me think. Maybe some of the principles that apply to juggling can also apply to how you and I can best approach the whirlwind of life.

Here’s what I discovered.

The first step in learning to juggle is to become comfortable with what you are juggling. It might be a tennis ball or perhaps a bean bag. But the key is to become familiar with the object. I think likewise you and I have to be familiar and comfortable with

what we have to juggle in our lives.

We have to know what matters most; what is important in the immediate and what can wait.

The second step is practicing a rhythm that works until you get it right. We are going to drop a ball here and there. But we have to pick them up and try again until we get comfortable with the rhythm and pacing. It’s really the same with you and me when it comes to life challenges. We have to be in tune with our own rhythm and what works for us. There is not a one size fits all answer. Everyone has a different rhythm.

The last key is developing an attitude of patience.

Becoming comfortable with the object you’re juggling doesn’t happen overnight. Neither does developing the rhythm necessary to keep all the balls of life in the air at once.

Life isn’t meant to be one long, continual juggling act. But there are seasons where juggling is the only way to get from one stage to the next. Embrace it realizing it’s all part of the rhythm of life.

Toxic Plants in the Garden

ometimes I go searching for gardening topics, other times they find me. This particular subject hit me right in the face—literally. I had been itching to work in the garden and now I am trying to scratch parts of my body I can no longer reach. Yes, it’s poison ivy time.

Spring is a great time for clearing out weeds. It’s much easier to tackle while everything is

just peeking out.

But Poison Sumac before you venture into the unknown, learn how to identify the evil lurking around you.

Perhaps you’ve heard the familiar adage, “leaves of three, let them be.”

This warning applies to poison ivy and poison oak, but we also need to be aware of poison sumac. Poison sumac has 9-13 leaves in pairs with a single leaflet at the end. Poison sumac can be found in wetlands, swampy areas, and woods.

Poison ivy seems to be the foe that I encounter most in gardens and woods in South Jersey. Unfortunately, both poison ivy and poison oak take on many disguises. Leaves can be shiny or dull. Poison oak usually has three leaves but can also grow in groups of five, seven, and nine leaves.

All of these allergen-producing plants can turn a reddish color in the fall and winter. I remember my mother-in-law (a great storyteller) reminiscing about

If they have the urushiol oil on them, you are now vulnerable to getting a severe allergic reaction without even stepping into the garden. It’s this invisible enemy you must be aware of.

After a trip to the garden or woods, thoroughly clean all tools, clothing, and anything that could have been exposed to the toxic oil. Even your dog could carry the oil on his fur. Then scrub all parts of your skin making sure to clean any residual oil hiding under your fingernails.

Of course the best defense is to avoid touching the nuisances. Learn to identify each of these poisonous plants, and if found in your garden, have them removed. Ignoring them will only cause the plants to spread.

To remove, use double layers of disposable plastic bags and be sure to pull all parts of the plant including the roots. Turn the bags inside out and tie off, using caution to avoid contact with any part of the plant. Though it sounds tempting, do not attempt to burn poison ivy, oak, or sumac since the toxins can become airborne and get into your lungs. According to the Center for Disease Control, “Inhaling smoke from burning [poisonous] plants can cause severe allergic respiratory problems.”

ast weekend, Miami Breeze Cuisine celebrated its grand opening. Located inside the Tilton Shopping Center complex, this is the first restaurant to specialize in Latin American and Caribbean cuisine in our area.

Owners, Jason and Scarlly Dobson are South Jersey residents. Jason is a wellness instructor at Island Gym and has built a special bond with the South Jersey community for the past 10 years.

Together, they have a YouTube channel, “The Dobsons,” documenting their family’s day-to-day life. In 2017, the couple was also featured in a viral YouTube video known as the Baby Mama Challenge.

Jason shares that he’s always had the desire to own his own restaurant, pro-

viding choices that are not widely available in our region.

“Locally, our options have been limited; I have many friends that go to the Caribbean and Jamaica and they always come back talking about the food they’ve had.

I felt like there was another taste that wasn’t offered, and that South Jersey, as a whole, was ready for diversity.”

Shore Local Talent: The Billy Walton Band Masters of “Rock ‘n’ Soul” on European tour

hat happens when you mix great songwriting with the thrill of rock n roll, the rich depth of soul music, and a passion for showmanship? The answer comes in the form of New Jersey’s own The Bill Walton Band.

Comprised of five key members: Billy Walton himself on guitar & vocals, William Paris on the bass, Eric Safka on keyboard, John D’Angelo on drums and percussion, and Tom Petroccaro on the saxophone.

The band’s leader, Billy Walton, is a vastly experienced professional musician whose beginnings included playing in Asbury Park with local music legend Tony Amato. He built his musical resume by touring with Tony Amato’s band, Baccigalupe, in both Europe and the United States. He even had the chance to sit in with rock legends such as Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray for some of their performances.

It's Your Choice

T

here is a story of two brothers who grew up with an alcoholic, drugged out, criminal father. One brother grew to be an alcoholic drugged out criminal. The other grew to be a high achieving hedge fund manager, who never touched a drink or a drug in his life. When asked separately (later on in life) “How did you get here?” Both had the same answer: How could I not with a father like the one I had.

You know it is interesting to me how many of us use our past and current circumstances and experiences to dictate why we are the way that we are. This story so eloquently teaches us that we are who we are because of the choices that we make- not by the “hand that we were dealt”. But it is easy, isn’t it, to avoid taking responsibility for our own choices and actions

and to blame others or experiences?

Shore Locals, I cannot tell you how detrimental that is to your futures.

I say to my children, my team, my family, my friends (and basically anyone who will listen to me) that life is a result of the choices that we make.

The sooner that we take personal responsibility for our own choices and the outcomes that happen because of them, the sooner we will become who we were destined to be. Do experiences help shape us? Yes. Does our upbringing have an effect on how we parent or value ourselves, or handle conflict, or react instead of respond?

Yes. Does that mean that we are paralyzed by those experiences or people?

Absolutely freaking not.

In order to move forward and break free from that, you must first stop blaming your behavior and circumstances on others. Just stop. Now….

No really, right now. Get quiet and think about the choices that you personally have made which have brought you to where you are. You have so much more control over your life than you realize and guess where it all begins?

In your mind.

Let’s talk about a super taboo subject: infidelity. I have come to learn that

it is a fade that happens slowly, then quickly. I have heard so many spouses blame their infidelity on their spouse or the fact that their mother/father taught them that it was okay to treat their spouses with such disrespect.

You all know what I’m talking about, either you or someone you know has totally told you the story. I, myself, have heard it over and over and over again, to the point of exhaustion, if I am being honest. I bet if you go back, all the way back, you will see that one small, innocent enough, little choice is what led to the crap show that you eventually would experience, and guess where it began? It all began in your mind.

You allowed the thought to enter your mind and then you allowed it to take up residence there. That thought grew into a fantasy, which then grew into desire, which then grew into you walking that ever-so-thin line with the object of your fantasy, “just for fun” (a little text or facebook message can’t really hurt, right?). Before long, you find yourself alone in an unstoppable situation and then like a freight train speeding down the tracks, you were unable to hit the brakes. Then what happens? You begin to make excuses.

It couldn’t possibly me! It’s my partner! I’m unhappy in my relationship, because he doesn’t help me with the house or the kids, or he works too much, or she is too controlling or gained weight, or doesn’t desire me the way she once did. If this is you, I want you to stop it right now and think.

How did this all begin? Was it him? Was it her? Or was it you?

Friends, life is a result of the choices we make, every single, solitary moment of every single day. We, and only we, have the ability to change

the course of our lives and it comes from making a steadfast decision and a commitment to taking personal responsibility for our thoughts and our actions.

My column this week is absolutely not to pass judgement. For crying out loud, I have made my share of mistakes, probably way more than you ever have.

The difference? I have learned to take responsibility and to use those past experiences to make better decisions going forward. I only want that for you.

I want you to take personal responsibility for your futures. You are destined to become something great. Don’t allow your poor choices to dictate your future. Stop where you are and use that God-given, beautiful, brilliant mind of yours and reflect on where you went wrong. Maybe you need to stop this infidelity bit, or stop wallowing in self-pity, or put the drugs or alcohol down, or apologize to that friend that you deeply hurt, or go back and get that degree, or insert whatever awesome choice you can make to change the course of your life here. You are powerful beyond measure. I believe in you. Now, believe in yourself and make great choices. I am sending you peace, love, and good vibes from my crazy jumbled up mind, to your’s!

The Legend Of That Poor Mr. Grohl

F

or as long as anyone can remember, pork roll and scrapple have been the breakfast meats of choice for folks in the Pine Barrens. And it’s all thanks to a waylaid German sausage maker named Gunter Grohl, and his pet coyote, Fetzen.

Gunter, barely twenty-two years old and built like a blond, blue-eyed wrestler, immigrated from Germany in January of 1758 with plans to start a sausage making operation in Philadelphia. But as the ship he was aboard approached the Delaware River, the Captain and crew realized that trying to reach Phila-

delphia was impossible, as the ice in the river made further navigation futile. Instead, they headed north, up the coast of NJ, to Newark. Gunter would have to find his way back south to Philadelphia somehow.

After arriving in Newark, he purchased a small wagon that he could pull, and some provisions for the trip, including a sheet of canvas for a tent, a rifle and some ammunition for hunting and protection, and the best map he could find. He neatly packed everything that he owned, including recipes and his prized spice pouches for his sausages, and the things he’d just purchased into the wagon, and began his journey on foot through the wild, unknown Pinelands, southwest to Philadel-

phia.

About twenty days into the journey, just outside of a little town known as Iron Forge (now Chatsworth), as he was starting his fire and setting up his canvas tent, getting ready to bed down for another cold, black night in the Pines, he saw a coyote that was holding something in it’s mouth watching him. Unafraid, he called and motioned to the coyote, “Come to me. Come to me. I will not harm you, little friend, come here, please.”

Amazingly, the coyote trusted Gunter, and slowly and cautiously, approached Gunter, who was now sitting on the back of his wagon.

He saw that the coyote had a piece of deer meat in his jaws, which he dropped at Gunter’s feet.

“For me?” Gunter laughed. “Is that a gift for me? Ahhh, thank you!”

Gunter reached down and patted the coyote’s head. They’d become friends instantly.

“Now, go get me some more scraps of meat”, Gunter half-heartedly commanded. “and, I shall call you Fetzen from now on.”

Dutifully, to Gunter’s surprise, Fetzen came back again and again with ripped scraps of meats from the forest. Some deer, some rabbit. Some that were a mystery. Before long, they had quite a collection of meats.

“We shall wrap these meats in a piece of canvas I will fashion like a long sock, and smoke them over the fire here”, Gunter told Fetzen. “What we don’t wrap, we shall boil and store in a hole you and I will dig to keep it all cooled down over night”.

The process worked perfectly.

Gunter would cut and sew strips

of canvas into a long tube with one end sewn shut, stuff it tightly with finely-minced scraps of meat, sew it closed, and hang it over his fire, smoking and preserving the meats for later use. What he didn’t stuff into the canvas, he boiled down into a thick, porridge-like consistency, covered the pot, and buried it in a hole he and Fetzen would dig over night.

The next morning, it was congealed and solid, and easily sliced and fried.

Gunter and Fetzen took some of their meat products into the little town and began selling it to the folks that lived there. Everyone loved these new meat delicacies that had never been seen or tasted before.

They invited Gunter and Fetzen to stay in Iron Forge and become friends and neighbors, though they felt sorry that Gunter could speak no English, and they had a hard time communicating with him. They started referring to him as “that poor Mr. Grohl” Gunter decided it would suit him to stay in Iron Forge instead of continuing to Philadelphia. He built a cabin, and set up a more elaborate shop than he had out in the wilds.

As more and more people bought and enjoyed his products, his operation grew and grew. He and Fetzen became loved and revered far and wide in and around Iron Forge, and it was many a customer, for years and years, that traveled great distances to get their meat from “Poor Grohl”, either wrapped in the canvas, or that which was made in the scrap hole.

To this very day, folks still enjoy pork roll (Poor Grohl) and/or scrapple (scrap hole) for breakfast in the Pines.

he week began on Sunday in a meeting with the AC Blackjacks, our newest sports professional franchise. Player personnel director Brian Lang along with Head Coach Ron James sat down with us to talk all things community involvement. We put the X’s and O’s down on paper as we planned the attack on Atlantic City.

The first play call was taking Land and James to the local establishments including Wonder Bar, Vagabond, and several other locations to shake hands with the patrons and business owners alike. We showed them where to get a great meal and helped facilitate relationships with local business owners. Brian Miranda of Wonder Bar and Elvis Cadavid of Vagabond were especially hospitiable to our guests.

The game plan continued on Friday when the Atlantic City Blackjack’s coaching staff joined Dan Klein & I on location at Longport Media WOND studios in Linwood to talk foot-

ball and AC. From there, it was off to cheer day, a productive Miss NJ executive board on the ACBJ’s dance team, the Atlantic City meeting was had in Vorhees to discuss the Diamonds at the dance finals hosted at Hard new home at Resorts Hotel and Casino. In District 2, John Risley nailed down the Republican Nomination on the first ballot. Former Brigantine Mayor Phil Guenther took the second Nomination on the second ballot. This left Somers Point City Councilman James Toto on the outside looking in for the second year-in-a-row.

Toto lost, but, as usual he refuses to be outworked by anyone. He's ambitious, but, not in a bad way. He sees upward mobility in his future. He wants to serve the public. That should never be held against anyone. It's hard to find good people willing to run for office. Toto is very good "people."

Don't be surprised if Toto takes a look at the Atlantic County Sheriff election, or, a Freeholder seat should either Risley win a seat in the New Jersey Legislature; or, if Freeholder at Large Amy Gatto should lose her re-election bid this year on November 4, 2019.

Democrat Nick Polito will face Gatto in the at large contest for Freeholder. With the Craig Callaway organization growing stronger with each election; Gatto may not be able to survive the upcoming voteby-mail effort in Atlantic City and Pleasanvtille.

Both Risley and Freeholder at Large Frank Formica barely survived it over the past two election cycles.

The Callaway vote-by-mail machine is real. Gatto may be sent packing.

Gatto is very fortunate that Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson is on-the-ballot this year.

He is the most prodigious Republican vote-getter and fund-raiser in Atlantic County.

Another significant disadvantage for Gatto and all the Republicans down ballot is that the legislative seats are also on-the-ballot this year. Millions of dol-

lars that will benefit the entire Democrat column will flow into the district this year.

Especially because Risley and Guenther will be viewed as a serious threat to Democrat incumbents Vince Mazzeo and John Armato.

Every election cycle I talk and write about the importance of the "Likeability Factor." Sometimes I call it a "Quotient." Those who have it, usually win. Those who don't, usually lose. Levinson, Risley, Guenther, Mazzeo have it. Gatto doesn't have it. Polito could be an upset victor waiting to happen.

Gatto was first carried into local office by the late, great Joe Nickels, who ran a masterclass campaign; whereby Nickels and Roger Silva strategically placed Gatto in the middle of the ticket and all three won in Hamilton Township.

Good news for Republicans in Hamilton Township, former Mayor Charles Cain will be running for his former position in Hamilton Township. Cain is an outstanding candidate. No one can outwork or outsmart him.

If Polito pulls off the win versus Gatto, the Republican lead would shrink to a scant 5-4 majority regarding the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Democrats have gotten as close as 5-4 a few times over the past 20-plus years.

Republican incumbent 4th District Freeholder Rich Dase is not unlikeable; he's just sort of invisible.

It's like he's not really there. Dase will face Democrat Steve Light, an Absecon Councilman. Dase should win, because he will not face the vaunted Craig Callaway juggernaut. The composition of the district favors a Republican, especially with Levinson on the ballot.

Let's talk about Levinson, the long-time, popular incumbent Atlantic County Executive. He will face Northfield City Councilwoman Susan Korngut, Esquire. Korngut was elected to the Northfield City Council in 2017. Korngut's theme is that "County government is stuck on cruise control for too long."

Korngut believes that bold leadership is required and that a change is necessary.

Korngut should also directly benefit big time

Full disclosure, I hired and supervised Korngut's Brother more than 30 years ago. I've never met or spoken with Susan Korngut.

Susan Korngut appears to possess many positive quality characteristic traits; including: sticking-up for those being bullied and she appears to be a tenacious fighter on behalf of the underdog.

However, Levinson has a record of accomplishment that is really hard to attack. From perfect audits year-after-year, to one of the lowest tax rates and best debt-to-equity ratios in the country.

By any standard of measure, Atlantic County government is run very effectively. Levinson is frugal with the taxpayers dollars. My friend, the Honorable New Jersey State Senate President Stephen Sweeney has called Levinson the finest County Executive in the state of New Jersey. That's high praise coming from the highest elected official in the New Jersey Legislature, who just happens to be a Member of the opposite political party.

Where in America have you seen County government finance a major University project like Stockton University Atlantic City campus? It's unprecedented.

However, the state of New Jersey is broke as a joke, and, Stockton was rocked an in no position to finance it's own project due to poor real estate decisions made before Dr. Harvey Kesselman became President and Chief Executive Officer of Stockton University.

Kesselman effectively addressed and solved the disastrous Showboat purchase and sold The Seaview Hotel and Gold Course. Kesselman has successfully positioned Stockton University for greatness.

Neighboring District 1 is also set and ready to go.

Michael Testa, Esqyire is the Republican Nominee for the Senate. He will face a likeable, popular, however, appointed State Senator Bob Andrzejczak.

This race could go either way. Testa has the best chance to win this seat since Nick Asselta won in 2004.

The Assembly Republican ticket will be Lower Township Mayor Erik Simonsen and Ocean City Councilman Antwan McClellan; who will face Democrat incumbent Assemblymen, Bruce Land and Matt Milam.

Two titans will play a big role in how this is all

decided. Levinson on the Republican side and United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew on the Democrat side. And, it must be noted that Van Drew is not even on the ballot.

Yet, the power of his well established brand; The Van Drew Team has been a force of human nature; growing each year for the past 27 years. It's hard to vote against Van Drew. His slate has consistently won, even when he's not on the ballot.

This will be his biggest test, yet. Van Drew has done a great job keeping his word in Washington, D.C. However, he has cast votes both with and against President Donald Trump. It remains to be seen how this will affect his vaunted cross-over appeal that he has mastered by his honesty and integrity.

I find this election season to be fascinating for so many reasons. There are many factors; some we don't even know yet how they will ultimately play out.

You'll hear me say this and write this a lot over the next seven months; All roads will lead to Levinson and Van Drew. It will be an epic election season. Stay close.

A Real Nut Job

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings or those of you who think retirement is just a layover, a waypoint on the way to the final dirt nap, I am here

to tell you that there are many rich and rewarding experiences that lie ahead. I recently had the opportunity to enjoy one such experience.

My wife asked if I wouldn’t mind doing her a favor. As a caring and compliant husband, I answered in the oft repeated refrain, “yes dear.”

She was baking a cake that required pistachio nuts and asked if I would shell a half a cup for her since the ones we had in the house were in

their shell. Off she went to her Sunday morning outing leaving me to my task. I thought how hard can this be and how many nuts would it take to fill a half a cup? I emptied a small pile on to the kitchen table and being somewhat systematic in approaching such tasks, separated the nuts into three piles; nuts that were almost completely open, nuts that where opened a little and those that were completely shut. The first pile went rather quickly although more te d i o u s than I had thought.

After putting those i n to t h e mea suring cup, I was disappointed to see they had barely covered the bottom. I tackled the second pile of less opened nuts which proved more challenging and I was slowly taking the skin off my fingers. Truth be told, I started using my teeth to open a few. (Don’t eat the pistachio cake.)

After a bit, I was reminded of my last dental experience and decided to employ the use of a paring knife to pry the shells apart and after one slip of the knife decided that was not the most prudent way of opening shells. This is what the first oyster shucker, “Two Fingered Sam” must have discovered before resorting to a dull knife. I traded the paring knife in for a butter knife and continued on with the occasional pistachio nut skittering across the table, over the floor and under the fridge where it will

finally be discovered by our next home owner. Finally, I was on to the third pile of nuts that were shut tighter than a dolphin’s blowhole.

The only way to open those would have been with a pair of vice grips and a hammer. I decided to leave those for someone else to deal with and dumped the shelled pistachios into the half cup. Viola, just made it! Of course with nothing but time on my hands and in the interest of further serving my readership, I counted the leftover sh e ll s to see just how many pistachio nuts it takes to fill a half a cup.

The answer is ab ou t a hundred. Now wasn’t this worth reading? By the way, my wife came home and was quite pleased with the job I had done and asked if I could shell some more for sprinkling on the top of the cake. I replied that there were no more. “Can you please go to the store and get me a bag of shelled pistachios then, “she asked. “Yes dear,” I replied. “You’re not planning to bake a walnut cake anytime soon, are you?”

Skate Freely AC New Park Built From The Ground Up

oung skaters waited impatiently as the finishing touches were put on the Sovereign Avenue Skate Park in Atlantic City this past week. As local artists finished painting the long awaited park, skaters were standing by asking if they could skate on the finished areas yet.

The skate park has been a passion project led led by the hands and hearts of the community for nearly a decade. “I always say it feels like a baton race. Jason handed it to Greg, Greg handed it to Jason who handed it off to me and together we worked to make it to the finish line,” shares Zach Katzen, program director for the Atlantic City Arts Foundation.

Jason Forslund began pursuing the origination of the skate park in 2010. Attending CRDA meetings and advocating the need for a skate park in the city, Forslund planted the seed in the heart of the city. Since then, it has taken an army to finally bring it to life.

Jason Klotz and Greg Simmons, lifelong skaters in the area, were next to run with the baton. Creators of what is known as the “Rad Movement”, Klotz and Simmons took over the push, building a DIY skate park known as AC Back Sov. The DIY skate park started with local skaters bringing boxes and rails and a few ledges built by Klotz. They wanted more though. The city needed a state of the art skate park and Klotz, Simmons, and the community were determined to get it.

They raised money through Go Fund Me to upgrade the park with intentions of hiring Jesse Clayton from 5th Pocket to build a top notch park for Atlantic City. For years, they waited while local officials pushed the building of the park back another season, then another. Years began to pass and the park still was not being approved by the city.

In 2017, the DIY park was unexpectedly torn down.

There were some discrepancies and debate over who made the call to tear down the park but one fact was that the skaters of the area were not going down

without a fight. Klotz had already raised the money and volunteers to rebuild their beloved skate park all they needed was approval from the city.

That approval proved to be painstakingly difficult and it would be another two years before the park was officially brought to life as a landmark in Atlantic City.

It was during the same time that Back Sov was torn down that the last pass of the baton was to Zach Katzen and the Atlantic City Arts Foundation. With the help and resources of the Arts Foundation and budding local community, the skaters of the area finally would see their dream come to life.

With the help of partners who had been involved since the beginning along with those newly on board, “Mission Sovereign Ave Skate Park” was full speed ahead and this time, they weren’t backing down until the park was built.

Bringing attention to the skate park and its mission, the AC Arts Foundation began holding events where the DIY park once was and the state of the art park would soon be built. Skate competitions, art celebrations, pop-up yoga classes, DJ events, and more were held on site to bring attention to the mission. Zach Katzen pitched to the Hard Rock Casino

to donate funds and resources to the building of the skate park, who ultimately matched the Go Fund Me money. The Jingoli’s , builders of Hard Rock and Stockton University AC Campus were also in full support.

It is without question that the passionate hearts of the Atlantic City community made it possible to see it through to fruition. As Katzen and Klotz worked to start an official non-profit organization for the park, The Leadership Studio worked alongside of them to help form the 5013c, accepting

the check from Hard Rock on their behalf before they were officially formed, sharing their lawyer for legal advice, teaching pop-up yoga classes, and so much more.

Mayor Frank Gilliam stood in full support of the building of the park along with city councilmen including Councilman Chen of the 5th Ward who donated Chinese food while the park was being built. Sherwin Williams AC, Home Depot, and AC Arts Foundation all donated paint supplies to put the finishing touches on the park after the build. The Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic CIty offered support,

Lionel Richie Has Them “Dancing On The Ceiling” And In The Aisles Lionel Richie knows how to entertain the audience keep the on their feet and win them over as life long fans. He is full of energy and his voice is as strong as ever.

s the fans filed into the Mark G. Etess Arena at Hard Rock Atlantic City Saturday evening, March 23,2019 there was the feeling of great anticipation and an air of excitement. The mostly “central” aged crowd came to hear their perennial favorite, Lionel Richie.

If you take a few moments to review the impact Richie has had on the music industry, it becomes obvious why his fans can’t wait to see and hear him perform live.

Richie has sold nearly 90 million records, won five Grammy’s, had five #1 hits and thirteen top ten hits, received an Oscar for best song (Say You, Say Me) in addition to a golden globe. In other words, just about anything and everything worth winning he has won! He is also a judge on the revival of American Idol where he has made a very positive impact on all the contestants.

The show started twenty minutes late so that the fans could be seated, which only enhanced the electricity. With his five-piece band already on stage, Lionel Richie opened the show from backstage as he began singing his big hit, “My Love.” Walking out on stage his fans wasted no time in welcoming him with a thunderous round of applause and screams.

As Richie went down the song list of seventeen songs, each one of his renditions received continued screams after just the first note of each song. This was a crowd who knew their performer. The evening ran sixty-five minutes before the encore and covered many of his most memorable hits which included “Stuck On You;” “Three Times A Lady;” “Sail On; “Say You, Say Me” and several other of his Commodores mega hits.

As Richie aptly remarked, “I have been watching these people in the first three rows, they know every word to every song. If I get into trouble singing these songs I’ll just turn it over to you,” which brought a

resounding roar from his fans.

After sitting down at the piano, Richie began to sing “Stuck On You”. When he was done he asked the audience to stand and dance just as he started to perform, “Dancing On The Ceiling,” the room responded without hesitation and the noise level along with the level of excitement rose immeasurably and continued with applause and screams well after he had finished the song.

When he began to sing one of his best recognized ballads, “Three Times A Lady,” the arena exploded with cheers and yells of “Lionel we love you!” from hoards of his female fans standing in front of their seats swaying to his sound.

Reigniting the audience after the soft mellow tones was easy as Richie started “Brick House/Fire,” a Commodores song.

Once he left the stage, as you would expect from an audience who could not get enough of this performer, the stomping and yelling “Lionel” began and continued until the band ran back on stage.

Walking to center stage, Richie started his three song encore with, “Say You, Say Me,” followed by a cover of “We Are The World” causing another room eruption that continued when he ended the show by performing, “All Night Long,” which brought the night to a wonderful close.

Born June 20, 1949, in Tuskegee, AL., Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr. is a prolific song writer who is also a consummate performer, Richie knows how to entertain, hold the audience on their feet and win them over as life long fans. He is full of energy and his voice is as strong as ever. An evening with Lionel Richie will have you dancing out of the room.

encouragement, and resources. The list is endless and it is impossible to name everyone but it goes without saying that every single soul involved in the birth of the skate park is appreciated more than words could adequately describe.

The building of Sovereign Avenue Skate Park was the epitome of a community coming together for something good.

5th Pocket, the builders of the long awaited park, donated 100% of their time to make sure that the birth of the park fit under budget. They matched dollar for dollar the money raised and built our community something bigger than life that they can be proud of.

The project was topped off with incredible paintings created by local artists including Erin Moore, Jonny from Studio 130, Billy Joe, Edwin Rivera, Christian Correa, Victor from The Culprits, Lou Fermonte, and of course the support and talent of 5th Pocket.

The park is now open and filled with skaters every day. There will be a grand opening celebration on June 21st, World Skateboarding Day in combination with the annual 48 Blocks Celebration. The celebration will include a dedication ceremony, a DJ, and barbeque. The event is free and open to the public.

elissa Duffy was already a very busy lady. With a full time job and two young children, you might be surprised to learn that Melissa runs a home business as well. Morris House Boutique is an online women's fashion business that is powered by a big purpose.

“So, many people have been asking, ‘Where did this idea to start an online boutique come from?’ My friends and family know that I am a pretty busy working mom as it is, so why would I want to add another thing to my plate?” shares Duffy.

Melissa’s answer is simple: For Jackson.

Jackson is Duffy’s oldest of two boys who lives with autism. For Duffy, she shares that Jackson’s autism was something she kept private for a long time.

Not because she was ashamed but because she felt it was a private family matter and never felt quite comfortable enough to share publicly.

“I felt that if I didn’t say it, maybe people wouldn’t know. I hoped that if I didn’t say it, that maybe it would disappear,” shares Duffy.

Duffy has since accepted that that is simply not true and began to internally and publicly embrace that Jackson may have some differ-

ences but he is her amazing son that she has the privilege of caring for. Teaching Jackson life skills through Morris House Boutique has become something that her and Jackson can do together. Jackson is only six years old but as the business grows, Duffy hopes that his hands-on-experience will offer him a skillset to use as he gets older.

“You might wonder what skills he could learn here. Right now, he enjoys shipping. So, he helps me package up orders and print labels from the computer. He also really enjoys dropping the packages off at the post office,” says Melissa. “As he gets older, I would love to teach him how to work the website and learn basic accounting skills on the business end of things.

Hopefully, he will also be able to learn some customer service skills along the way too.

The possibilities are endless in business and they are endless for Jackson.”

Right now Morris House Boutique is a one woman and one little boy show, but Melissa's ultimate goal is to have it grow enough to need employees. “My husband and I have talked about this and we think it would be amazing to be able to eventually hire people on the autism spectrum. We hope this dream can become a reality!” says Melissa.
