oyal Farms convenience store chain is days away from opening up it's first location in Atlantic County, on the corner of Fire and Tilton Roads in Egg Harbor Township. This will soon provide some direct competition for the area’s established convenience store leader, Wawa. Royal Farms currently has nearly 200 stores, mostly in the mid-Atlantic. A second EHT store on the Black Horse Pike and a third store in Absecon are in the planning stages. Wawa has more than 1,000 stores along the East Coast from New York to Florida. Some convenience store competition will be heating up this summer right here in Atlantic County. The winner will most likely be all of us, as the consumer, with lower prices in the store and at the gas tank. Royal Farms will offer some new menu items, such as fried chicken, on and off the bone and in salads and sandwiches too. They will also have the typical convenience store items, such as tobacco, lottery tickets, coffee and grab and go food items, as well as value-priced gasoline. Chicken is Royal Farms claim to fame. It boasts of having never frozen chicken, but

Royal Farms has a greater variety of the traditional and wrap sandwiches. Freshly-prepared food though is still the top choice for those with a moment of two to spare.

Expect lower prices at nearby Wawa locations as Royal Farms enters this market.

he sights, the smells, the sounds of spring have arrived. The birds have been chirping, the familiar tune of the ice cream truck is playing through the streets, and the smell of budding flowers are beginning to fill our senses. Spring has arrived! Everything seems better in spring. The days are longer, the sun shines brighter, and the perennial flowers push upward, bursting through the soil. One of the first to bloom into full color are the forsythias, rich in yellow color that are sure to bring a smile to my face every year. My birthday happens to be in early April, the same week the forsythia blooms each year. When I was a child , I mistook forsythia to mean “For Cynthia” (my real name). Since it bloomed on my birthday, it made perfect sense in my young mind that it was therefore, my flower. I suppose my friends Lily, Rose, Ivy, Daisy, Willow, and my daughter, Holly may
have similar feelings about their namesake. Spring brings life and a refreshed energy to all of us who patiently wait through the dreaded winter to shed some layers of clothing and step outside into the sunlight. We all seem to bloom along with the
flowers and put a little more pep in our steps each day. With summer around the corner, Shore Local and our fellow local businesses are in full preparation. We all know that in just a few short
weeks the crowds will flock to our shores by the hundreds of thousands. The ripple effect economically is felt everywhere. Contractors, suppliers, landscapers and so many more are in demand preparing for the summer of 2019. Many annual community events are being planned in the upcoming weeks. Ocean City's Girls Weekend is April 5th- 7th. If you are looking for an opportunity to reconnect with your girls, this is for you. Read about all the fantastic events and opportunities to have fun with your girls in Ocean City. This issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine marks our 3rd anniversary. pring has sprung! I know everyone out there must be extremely happy about that. You know something? Looking back at the winter as a whole it wasn’t too bad. My forecast was close, but not close enough. I definitely thought we’d get in on a little more snow than what ultimately fell. It was the winter that “almost” was. Everything I wanted to line up, did, but unfortunately it was a classic example of too little too late. We had a few good blasts of cold, but the southern jet was not active enough to deliver the moisture at the right time. No big snow storms. We nickeled and dimed our way to 18”.

Oh well, it’s behind us now. We look ahead to brighter and warmer times, right? A little chilly for Saturday then warmer on Sunday. Next week could get a little hairy. Tuesday and Wednesday sees a period of time that could bring some interesting weather in the form of a rain to wintry mix for us, snow well north. I want to keep an eye on this. While the window for any sort of significant snow has pretty much closed, I HAVE seen some pretty gnarly things happen in March. Never rule anything out! I do believe we will get in on an actual spring this year!

The Rise of the Tilton Square Theatre A luxurious entertainment experience comes to the Mainland

T
ilton Square Theater is poised to be this area’s hottest new movie theater experience. Owned and operated by the masterminds behind the famous Harbor Square Theatre in Stone Harbor, NJ, the Tilton Square Theatre aims to bring that same success to Northfield. Previously known as the Tilton 9 Theatre, a long-time movie theater staple of the Mainland area, the Tilton Square Theatre is currently in the works of becoming this area’s best new movie theater. From new remodeled concession stands to luxurious reclining seats, this will be a far cry from the Tilton 9 Theatre of old. “Converting the theater’s seats into recliners was the biggest challenge” explained Brett Denafo, one of the leaders behind this project. The reclining seats in this theater will be the real stars of the show once the theater opens next month. The recliner chairs are so large that one row of the new recliners would be equal to two rows of the previous seats that were in the old Tilton 9, according to Denafo. All
that hard work will be well worth it for moviegoers come April once the doors are open to the public. In addition, all seats will be assigned to guests upon purchasing their tickets.
“The best seats in the house are now closer up front” said Denafo. This is due to the recliners allowing the audience to see the movie closer without the
discomfort of the typical movie theater chair. It will definitely be thrilling to see the new Avengers movie up close in a recliner seat. Brett Denafo expressed him and his team’s desire to have the theater open in time for the new Avengers: Endgame which is slated for an April release date this year. It is expected to be a huge box office success and Tilton Square’s impressive I-MAX theater would be the perfect option to see the film in. Without a doubt, the crown jewel of the soon
to be Tilton Square Theatre will be their I-MAX theater. As you walk into the I-MAX theater, the screen is both imposing and breathtaking. The sound system is said to be as equally impressive. This is definitely the theater you would want to go to see a Star Wars or action film in. This I-MAX theater came with the property but, Tilton Square is both enhancing and optimizing it for their audiences.
Not only are the theaters inside the premises completely renovated, but the entire lobby, hallway, concession stands, doors, bathrooms, and most of the exterior has been or is currently being remodeled. Construction has been running a bit behind schedule according to their Facebook page but, everyone there is hard at work and motivated to making this property a whole new movie theater. After taking a tour that Brett Denafo so graciously gave me, I can honestly say that this theater is sure to be a hit with local moviegoers. While there was much to be completed inside, I can already tell that it’s going to be amazing and worth the hype when it is completed next month. ifth graders at Belhaven Middle school in Linwood didn’t know what to think as five New Jersey State Police officers in full uniform filed through the middle of their cafeteria at lunchtime, on Thursday, March 14th. When principal Susan Speirs told them a special award was being presented, they were all ears. Students erupted into applause when teacher Bonnie Marino announced that their fellow fifth grader, Taylor Timbrook, had won the New Jersey Missing Children’s Poster Contest. Over 100 entries from different counties in New Jersey were judged by the State Police, but the winner was found in our own backyard. Timbrook’s poster creatively and positively depicted the theme of the contest, “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.” National Missing Children’s Day has been commemorated on May 25th each year since 1983, when it was first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan. Each year, the Department of Justice holds a ceremony honoring the heroic and exemplary efforts of agencies, organizations, and individuals to protect children. According to the Office of Juve-
nile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), “Missing Children’s Day is dedicated to encouraging parents, guardians, caregivers, and others concerned with the well-being of children to make child safety a priority. It serves as a reminder to continue our efforts to reunite missing children with their families and an occasion to honor those dedicated to this cause.” The annual nationwide Missing Children’s Poster Contest is “designed to promote awareness among teachers, parents/guardians and children and engage them in discussions about safety.” Timbrook’s statewinning poster will be submitted to the OJJDP for competition at the national level. The national winner, his/her teacher, and their parents/guardians will be invited to a free trip to Washington, DC to participate in the National Children’s Day ceremony in May. Tammy Thornton is a mom of four, a substitute teacher, and a Sunday school teacher. She is passionate about gardening and cooking, and loves the beach.

magine if you or your loved one is elderly, coping with multiple medical conditions and is living alone. What if something happened? What if they took a fall and were injured. Worst of all, what if no one knew? Now imagine the tremendous reassurance you would feel knowing that someone was checking in on them everyday. That is exactly what CONTACT Cape-Atlantic does. They provide a daily ‘check-in’ phone call to older adults and disabled persons who are living alone. This allows them to remain independent in their own home, a goal of so many. The client is able to choose the time of day they would like to receive their call and that time remains consistent. If a phone call is not answered at the scheduled time, there are procedures each volunteer follows to ensure that the person is well. The program was first established to keep in touch with older citizens living alone and to let them know someone cares about them. Now the program has grown to help anyone in need, regardless of age, have contact with another friendly person. Currently CONTACT
Cape-Atlantic's oldest client is 102 years old and their youngest is 46. “A 99 year old woman in Galloway did not answer her scheduled check-in call. Next, we checked to make sure she was not in the hospital. When we learned she was not, we called her backup, a neighbor. When the neighbor went over to check on her, she found the woman had fallen and could not move. This

lonely, living alone or feeling isolated from their community. The volunteers are caring and can provide a comforting touch to someone's day, while watching out for their total well-being. Many of the volunteers make the calls from home, but some prefer to come into the CONTACT Atlantic-Cape office, located in Northfield. Another service offered is the Gatekeeper Program. Gatekeepers are public service workers or everyday citizens who are trained to recognize danger signs indicating an elderly or disabled person is at risk. When a problem is suspected, Gatekeepers will call CONTACT. The situation is then assessed and referrals are made for essential services such as delivered meals, medical care, homemaker services, transportation and financial assistance. Many senior citizens are unaware of the services that are available to help them. The Gatekeeper Program opens the door to services that may be vital to them. R
ecently, I had the opportunity of interviewing a young piano prodigy named Scott Nuss. At the young age of 14, this Ocean City High School freshman has made a name for himself, playing benefit concerts for charity and composing his own original songs. Originally from Perry Hall, Maryland, Scott began playing the piano since the age of 4, following in his brother Grant’s footsteps. Although Grant lost interest, Scott continued to persevere in his exceptional talent. Scott held his first public onstage performance at Perry Hall High School two years ago. He describes the first moments stepping on stage. “I was a little bit nervous; I didn’t know what to say in between songs, but once I started singing, those nerves quickly went away.” After relocating to Ocean City in the summer of 2017, Scott devised an original piece that stunned everyone. Titled “Ocean City, New Jersey Theme Song,” the composition describes his love for the shore town. He has also written a song entitled “Dreams Can Come True,” about doing your best and achieving your dreams. He and his family vacationed in Ocean City for many years, relocating here out of love of the area’s cultural scene. Scott’s one-man show at the Ocean City Community Center last year attracted the attention of Mayor Jay Gillian, who noted his talents in the Mayor’s Update. Last September, he performed a show at the Ocean City High School Auditorium titled The Piano Men with Dr. Daniel Weiser, a classical pianist and Doctorate in Piano and Chamber music at the Peabody Institute. Being a fan of Billy Joel, Scott incorporates his music into performances; his favorite songs include “New York State of Mind” and “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.”
Jill Nuss, Scott’s mom and manager, talks about how proud she is over her son’s success. “He is so calm. I always say he works better under pressure. When he gets on the stage, he is a natural, and he gets it perfect every time.” Andrew Hink, local gifted vocalist, pianist and composer with the Ocean City Theatre Company, has been sharing his artistry with Scott. Along with teaching proper piano skills, Andrew has been assisting Scott’s vocal range and songwriting comprehension. In our ever-expanding art and music community, Scott not only shows his extraordinary talents but also his generosity and kindness to others. Through his benefit concerts, thousands of dollars have been raised for St. Jude’s Research Hospital for Children, a charity that inspired him after watching the commercials on TV. When Scott is not in front of the piano, he can be found throughout Ocean City playing tennis or on a surfboard at the beach. Scott Nuss and Andrew Hink will be performing a benefit concert at the Ocean City Tabernacle on Saturday, May 11th. The show, Tunes for Trees, will raise money for the Pinelands Preservation Alliance. Tickets will be sold at the door for $15. New Acts Added to the 2019 Summer. Concert Series at the Ocean City Music Pier From Broadway to Blues to Rock & Roll, the spectacular sounds coming from the Ocean City Music Pier this summer will cover a wide range of genres. BROADWAY ON THE OC BOARDWALK X On June 26th at 7:30 p.m., Broadway will truly come to the Boardwalk as professional performers appearing in the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company’s 2019 Summer Season take to the stage to bring Broadway favorites to life. The 10th edition of “Broadway on the Ocean City Boardwalk”will welcome “home” two Broadway stars who got their professional start with the Ocean City Theatre Company. Nicholas Edwards Nicholas Edwards was seen in OCTC’s productions of “Swing” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Currently, he is appearing on Broadway in the hit musical, “Frozen!” Nicholas was also seen in the National Tours and Regional Productions of “Sister Act.” “Les Miserables,” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

justice to one the greatest bands in rock history, Led Zeppelin. Making their Music Pier debut, THE ZOMBIES are 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees! The Monday, August 19 concert will feature hits like “She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No” and “Time of the Season”. Girls Weekend to Make a Splash in Ocean City

he Fourth Annual Ocean City Girls Weekend will make a return this April 5th thru the 7th with a multitude of events, classes, and sales happening exclusively in Ocean City, NJ. For anyone looking for a great excuse to come down to the shore early, look no further. This year’s Girls Weekend is slated to be the biggest one yet. The weekend-long event will start Friday night (April 5th) with the Fashion Show Kickoff at 7 p.m. taking place at Glazed Over Studios (704 Asbury Avenue). All clothes being modeled at the fashion show will be from Ocean City’s retail shops such as Ta-Dah!, 7th
Street Surf Shop, Bohemian Mama and more. Local men and women, including members of the City Council will serve as models for the fashion show. Be sure to bring your appetite because the fashion show will be catered by several local restaurants. For those who purchase a ticket at the fashion show there will be door prizes and chances to win awesome gift baskets from notable stores including Making Waves and Little Egg Harbor Soap Company. an it be done? Eating out and staying on track in your nutrition and fitness goals? Eating out to often can be difficult for those who are trying to stick to a healthy eating plan. While it’s easy to restrain yourself and stay true to your diet when you’re eating at home, it’s also easy to throw your inhibitions out the window at a restaurant and eat whatever you want. Are you going to be eating out with a family member or friend? If so, give them a heads up about your diet and let them know that you’re planning to stick to it. It’s not fair to ask someone else to abstain from eating an unhealthy meal. If they want to order a hamburger or a cheesesteak, they should be allowed to do it. But at the very least, letting others know about your diet will force them to rethink the way they talk about food at the table. They’ll be less inclined to talk about how good all of the unhealthy food looks and might even follow your lead and go with a healthy meal. In addition to telling whoever you’re going to be eating out with about your diet, you should also put some real thought into where you go out to eat. If you choose a place that serves nothing but unhealthy options, you’re going to be setting yourself up to fail. Instead, try and pick a place that has some healthy choices for you. Steer clear of the places that only serve foods that are high in fat, carbohydrates, and everything else you’re staying away from. It’ll serve you well in the end.
Portion Control can be a big problem at a restaurant. More often than not, restaurants serve huge meals to their customers with more food than they can possibly eat. When you have a lot of food on your plate, you’re going to be tempted to eat it all. Rather than doing that, decide how much you’re going to eat before you start and then stick to it. I would like to reinforce the rule of “never take leftovers home” If they were full of sodium and fats, they will be a second time . Many people overeat while dining out simply because they eat too quickly. They shovel food into their mouths too fast and don’t give their brains time to process what’s happening. Before they know it, they’re stuffed and can’t believe how much they ate. It’s a common problem that lots of people face at restaurants. Instead of eating quickly, slow yourself down and chew your food. In between bites, talk with whoever you’re eating with and avoid rushing through your meal. It’ll allow you to enjoy your meal more overall. It’ll also help you catch up with your family members and friends as you eat. Before you started your diet, you might have yelled “YES!” when the waiter came to your table and asked that question, “ would you like some dessert tonite?” But now Nancy Adler is a certified nutritionist and practitioner in Linwood. Almost every day we argued about western themed film/TV and enjoyed the music and memories of Johnny Mathis and Sam Cooke. There were few things I did not ask for Dad’s view on. Since Dad passed 6 years ago all I can do now is wonder. I wonder how I would feel if he had not shared that he was proud of me. Since I am the oldest child, I wonder if I missed something that would have allowed my father to still be here and the guiding light of my family? Each year between his birthday (March) and Good Friday (the day of his passing) these wandering thoughts become weights that I have learned to carry. Missing my father never truly resolves itself. I press on because Dad would want me to be happy and because I still have a great life to live. For the benefit of myself and my readers I reached out to therapist Mary L. Jennings of Blessings Way Behavioral Health for some advice on “coping” and “grief.” Ray: The hole in my heart from my father’s passing is real but is it “normal?”
Mary: Well Raymond. There are 5 stages to Grief and Loss. (1) Denial and isolation (2) Anger (3) Bargaining (4) Depression; and (5) Acceptance. People who are grieving do not necessarily go through the stages in the same order or experience all of them. Ray: I know I could not save my father but I feel I failed him. Mary: Most people I know get angry because they feel helpless. Some may experience the five stages several times before getting to total acceptance. Ray: I’ve personalized this. However, how should any of us dealing with loss cope? Mary: The best way to cope is to find someone to talk to. Someone who will just listen and not interject unless prompted. Another way is to think about the good times you and the person you are grieving over shared. Take up a hobby or go on vacations. Stay positive and focused. Some people increase their work hours to make it through the process. Be honest about your feelings instead of keeping them bottled up. Not expressing yourself can lead to more serious depression. his weeks column is kind of a follow-up to my last. More thoughts on the subject of change. How are you handling the current change? It’s out with Winter and in with Spring. Along with that comes temporary darkness in the morning but another hour of sunlight on the other end. We begin to see milder days and less frigid nights. The dead of the winter season begins to disappear and in it’s place the grass begins to turn green, the trees take on buds and the sound of birds begin to fill the morning sky. You say, what’s so hard about handling that? I can’t think of much. But believe it or not there are some people (it may not be you) who don’t do well with change; change of any kind. I’ve got news for you though. Change is just a part of life. Without change, things would get pretty boring. Not only that but if the seasons didn’t change, the ecosystem couldn’t survive. Even in tropical climates, there are seasonal changes. They may not be as dramatic and visible as the changes we experience here in the Northeast, but there is change. Change is a natural part of life and it comes to us in many forms. It’s not just a climate “thing”. For you
and me it could be change at work, loosing a job, taking on a new job, relationship changes in our lives, the loss of a loved one, a change in where we live; you name it, the list is endless. So if change is inevitable and unavoidable, how do we best navigate through it? The reality is when we resist change, we fail to grow. When we fail to grow, eventually we die both inside and out. So how can we best navigate through change? 1. It starts with realizing that change is going to happen no matter how hard we try to keep everything the same. Once we recognize it’s a normal part of life, it’s less likely to catch us by surprise or throw us off when it happens. 2. The way we process change has a dramatic impact on the outcome of the change that comes. When change comes into our lives (either positive or negative), the first thing we need to do is look for the lessons we can learn. And no matter what the circumstances, there are always lessons to be learned. Change means we must become flexible and adaptable to whatever comes our way. the last spring frost date is predicted to be around April 23rd and the first fall frost October 20th. Since that gives us a growing season of roughly 179 days, gardeners need to get busy. Some seeds such as peas and spinach can be sown directly in the garden as soon as the soil has thawed and is workable. Edible peas have a hard outer shell and can be tough to germinate without a little help. Soak pea seeds overnight in water to soften them. Sweet pea flowers are pretty and fragrant, but are also tough cookies to start. In addition to soaking overnight, you may need to scratch the outer layer of the seed with nail clippers or a nail file. Spinach seeds aren’t so fussy and can be planted straight from the packet. Many other cold hardy vegetables that can be planted before last frost and actually benefit from the cold are: kale, lettuce, carrots, and beets, and radishes. Radishes are very rewarding to grow, since they are fast-growing and can be harvested in as little as four weeks after planting. These are great plants to grow with children who love seeing quick results. If you really want to get a jump on the season, start your seeds indoors. Plants such as tomatoes need heat to grow and won’t make it if planted outside this early in the season. You can use a warming mat or a growing light to help them feel warm and cozy. Of course you can go crazy with an entire system with an expensive lighting. But I am mainly addressing the casual weekend gardener. A growing light can be purchased online for under $50, and will make your seedlings stronger and healthier. Quite a few seedlings don’t like to be disturbed and can rebel when transplanted. For those types of picky plants, grow the seedlings in containers that are biodegradable. When the temperatures are reliably above freezing, they can be transplanted

into the soil without the seedlings realizing they have been moved. You can purchase biodegradable peat pots and seed starter trays, or get creative. Newspapers can be folded into cute little containers for seedlings, or for fun with the kids, use an ice cream cone. Just keep in mind, since the whole point is for these items to disintegrate, they may start falling apart before you are ready to move them outdoors. Water gingerly or use a spray bottle to water your seedlings. This time of year is exciting for most of us, as we eagerly anticipate warmer days. For gardeners, we can’t wait to get planting. rom June until October I eat locally thanks to my wonderful farm share at B&B Farms. Every week I look forward to visiting the farm and loading up on pesticide-free fruits and veggies that have been grown with such care. When October rolls around I usually feel a sense of sadness as my weekly farm visits stop and we head into the winter months. This winter has been different because I started getting a weekly delivery from Misfits Market and it has been a total game changer for me in terms of fresh produce. I absolutely love it and think you will too. You may be thinking that misfit
seems like a strange word to use when it comes to produce as it usually refers to something that doesn’t fit in or is unwanted. That’s exactly correct. Misfits Market is a Philadelphia-based company that is working to combat the reality that over $1 trillion of food is wasted each year because it gets tossed at the farm, rots in warehouses or goes unsold at stores until it becomes inedible. This occurs because fruits and vegetables may be ugly, misshapen or imperfectly sized. If you have shopped in the organic aisle at the supermarket, you will know that this price can not be beat. The variety is outstanding. Each week the box is different. Last week my box was filled with oranges, avocados, kale, potatoes, peppers, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, garlic, turnips and broccoli. As someone who loves to cook, I let my weekly farm share or produce box dictate my menu. For dinners this week I will be making broccoli mac and cheese as well as sweet potato gnocchi, all thanks to what I received in my most recent box. Marven Gardens: A Downbeach community for nearly 100 yearss transportation to Margate to check out the new houses and the gardens bursting with rose bushes, junipers, and hydrangeas. Most Monopoly players of the Monopoly game do not realize that Marven Gardens is the only property that is not an actual

ack in 1922, Developers Frank Pendrick & Sons built 20 unique homes in a circular configuration, calling it Marven Gardens. The name is derived by combining Margate and Ventnor (Mar-Ven). The real estate project was marked as “the most highly restrictive residential development in the country” where “living is a full and rich experience.” Marven Gardens is a neighborhood neatly tucked in between the beginning of Margate City and the south end of Ventnor. It’s a one of a kind community that has attracted the attention and admiration of many people ranging from Hollywood filmmakers to Charles Darrow, the inventor of Monopoly, to the residents who have called it home for nearly 100 years.
In addition, each home would be built to individual taste, assuring owners that the “best architectural skill has been applied and remarkable results achieved.” The styles of the homes, which can still be seen today, included Tudor Revival, Mission/Spanish Revival, and Colonial and ranged from $18,000 to $25,000. Perspective buyers would meet at the developers’ Boardwalk office opposite Steel Pier. From there, they would receive free bus

An average home in Marven Gardens today would be at least $550,000. In 1972, the Jack Nicholson film, The King of Marvin Gardens, again used the incorrect Marvin as opposed to the correct Marven. The movie was primarily shot in Atlantic City. Ironically, the film crew never ventured down beach to actually film the framed yellow property that bears the name of the movie. If they had, the crew would have been greeted with the Welcome to Marven Gardens sign in front of the neighborhood – spelling correct! Locals recall childhood memories of Margate, including going to see Christmas decorations in Marven Gardens where “the lights attracted so many holiday gawkers that cars were let in on a quota.”

Bagnetto Verde – One of My Favorite Sauces

E
very culture seems to have a type of condiment (or sauce) that accompanies boiled or grilled meats, including beef or chicken. Probably the most famous and well-known sauce is Argentina’s Chimichurri, an uncooked, loose sauce that is usually green but can be red, and made with finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, olive oil, oregano and red wine vinegar. In Puerto Rican cuisine, Puerto Rican Remoulade, or Wepa Sauce, is a similar type sauce, but the recipe usually starts by making a sofrito, a purée of bell peppers, garlic, and cilantro, then adding mayonnaise, ketchup, spices such as adobo or Cajun seasoning, and cayenne pepper. In addition to serving Wepa with meats and fish, it’s also used as a base for stews as well as beans and rice. One of my most favorite Italian condiments, which I serve in my restaurant, Eat @ Joe’s, is a spicy sweet-sour green sauce called Bagnetto, which means “little bath (for baby)” in Italian. This sauce has its roots in the tradition of the Piedmontese cuisine of Northern Italy where I grew up. What makes Bagnetto different from either Chimichurri or Wepa is that the main ingredient of the recipe is anchovies. Traditionally Bagnetto is one of the sauces served with Gran Bollito Misto, a braise or stew that includes seven different cuts of beef or veal, seven “supporting” cuts (usually offal or extremity meats,) seven sauces
to go with all of that, plus an array of vegetable side dishes. It also is excellent with lamb, fish or chicken, omelets, or as a topping for crostini. You can even stir it into pasta for a quick and delicious side dish. In my restaurant I serve Bagnetto Verde, or green sauce, as a spread for the bread served with every dinner. The ingredients include parsley, anchovies, red wine vinegar, bread, hard-cooked eggs, garlic, seasonings and … ketchup! The latter is certainly not traditional, but I’ve found it adds sweetness, body and depth of flavor. There are many variations of Bagnetto throughout Italy depending
on the region (and depending how one’s mother makes it!). For example Bagnetto Genovese is similar, yet it includes green olives and pine nuts in the recipe. And in Bagnetto Rosso, or red sauce, red bell peppers and tomatoes are added. Here is my Bagnetto Verde recipe for you to try. But remember, in the traditional Italian kitchen things are never measured with measuring cups and spoons. It’s usually a handful of this, a wine glass of that and a pinch of seasoning. I’ve tried my best to include exact measurements, but you can vary them to your taste. Buon Appetito!

Chef Joe Massaglia’s Bagnetto Verde (About 2-2/12 cups) ●● About an 8-ounce piece of Italian bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 1 generous cup of bread) or an equal quantity of stale sliced dayold bread ●● 6 to 8 ounces red wine vinegar ●● 2 to 3 bunches fresh parsley, flatleaf preferred ●● One 2-ounce can flat or rolled anchovies ●● 2 hard-cooked eggs ●● 2 to 3 dried chiles de árbol or to taste ●● 2 large garlic cloves ●● 3/4 cup ketchup ●● About 1-1/4 cups extra virgin olive oil ●● Salt and pepper to taste Soak bread in red wine vinegar; squeeze out excess vinegar and put bread in the bowl of a food processor. Add remaining ingredients except olive oil and blend until smooth. With food processor running, slowly add olive oil until you get a smooth and creamy con-
sistency. (You may not need all of the olive oil). Season with salt and pepper to taste. This sauce keeps well for up to a week in the refrigerator.

The Mason Jar By Paul Pedersan, Jr
I
knew what it was as soon as I heard it smash. It was the nearly 160 year-old Mason jar that I had on the drainer next to the kitchen sink. I put it there after I gently washed it clean of the dirt that was on it after digging it from the swamp behind a tavern I’d been performing at in the Pine Barrens. I’d told the grandkids that were visiting to be careful getting their glasses for their milk off the drainer. I guess they weren’t paying attention. The whispered “Ohhhh, my God…you’re in trouble” I heard coming from the kitchen confirmed my fears. Though it was good and broke alright, it broke into large pieces. Heavy, old, hand-blown glass, like that made in South Jersey during the mid 19th century, tends to break like that, instead of shattering into a thousand little shards. That’s where this Mason jar was blown, in South Jersey, deep in the Pine Barrens. At a place called Crowleyville. It’s known as Crowley’s Landing, these days. Now it’s a picnic spot and boat launch ramp. No longer a bustling, multi-build-
ing glassblowing factory and town like it was in the 1850’s. Across the Mullica River and a bit east from Sweetwater Casino, it sits just off Rt. 542. If you’ve driven east of Batsto, towards Green Bank, you’ve probably seen the sign for it. I carefully gathered up the pieces of the jar from the sink, putting them on a dinner plate that, too, was on the drainer next to the sink. Sitting at the dining room table with the kids and a tube of Super Glue Gel,
we started carefully test-fitting the pieces together, then cementing them with the glue. Before long, the jar was back together, though “spider-webbed” and, for the most part, now worthless, except for it’s story that I told to the kids as we were sitting there.
“It started out as sugar sand. You know, that stuff out in the Pine Barrens that can swallow most of your car. In the old days, they’d go out there and bring back wagon-full’s of it, and throw it into a big fire pit with some other chemicals for color and stuff, and cook it up for a few days until it all melted and was like real thick honey. Then, the glassblowers would gather a ball of the hot, molten glass on the end of a long, hollow pipe, twirling it around and around. Then, they’d walk over to a guy holding a iron mold, and blow their breath in the pipe, expanding the glass to fill the mold. The mold guy would open the mold, and pull out a brand new Mason jar. Then, it had to go into a gradually-cooling oven over night so it didn’t crack.” Their eyes were wide. “Wow! All that for a dopey Mason jar?” one of them said. “Dopey? They really aren’t so dopey, if you really think about them. Before a man in France named Nicholas Appert invented them for Napolean’s army, there was no safe way to store food. A lot of Napolean’s troops and other people died from eating rotten food back then”, I said. “But he came up with the way to boil the food and seal it in the jar tight so the food stayed safe. He won a big prize for it, and started a food factory with the money he won.”
“Did he come here with his jars?”, the other one asked. “No. He wrote a book about how he did it. And a lot of businessmen here got the book, read it, and started their own ways of making jars. The first one’s they made were sealed with wax, like Appert’s. Others made jars that needed a wire bail to hold the lid down. But then, a man from Vineland, who was a tinsmith named John Landis Mason, figured out a way how to cut threads into a tin cap so you could screw it onto a jar with matching threads, add a gasket for a nice, tight seal, and bingo! The Mason jar was born”. They asked me about the little white piece of glass in the old Mason jar lids. “That was added later because people said that food touching the tin lid gave it a funny taste.” “He must have really been rich, huh?’, said one of the ‘grands‘. “Nope. He died penniless because he didn’t watch his business closely. His patents ran out, or he turned them over to other companies who renewed them in their names. Back then, they could do that in just a few years. That’s why they say, in business, you have to watch your P’s and Q’s. It means pints and quarts, as in Mason jars.” They both sat there for awhile, thinking, and saying nothing. “Ain’t so dopey, after all, is it?”, I offered.

The latest in the Race for the State Senate & General Assembly - New Jersey, District 1 a heart attack. Albano apologized for what he had done, dismissed his complaint and paid his fine. To provide our readers with context as to exactly what happened back in 2012, here is the transcript of the actual police stop as it occurred: At 1:13 p.m. February. 21, 2012, Albano was pulled over for driving 71 mph in a 55 mph zone on Route 29. "Good afternoon," Pangborn said. "License, registration and insurance card, please." Albano had not yet received his permanent registration card. "No paperwork with it, sir?" said Pangborn. "Just the thing that’s on the back window," said Albano. "OK," said Pangborn. "I got you at 71, it’s a 55." "I actually thought it was 65, I apologize," said Albano said. "OK, stay in the vehicle please," said Pangborn. Panghorn returned to Albano's car a few minutes later. "All right, sir, a little fast, sorry about that," Pangborn said. "Ah, 71 in a 55, you need to contact court, number’s on the back, they’ll explain how to take care of that, all right?" Albano does attempt to talk himself out of the ticket at this point. He tells Trooper Panghorn that he was the legislator of the year by the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association. Albano admitted that "I remember saying, yes, ‘Can you cut me a break? I’ve always supported the State Police, I was elected as legislator of the year because of what I have done supporting the police, can’t you cut me a break?’" Pangborn politely declined the request, saying "Well, you know, you have to contact court and then we can just go through there, OK sir?" The truth is that Tooper Panghorn was a gentleman throughout and Albano didn't do anything that any other citizen would do. It's just perceived differently when an elected official tries to get out of something by using their elective office as a privilege.

The Hurley Line: ew Jersey District 1 Republicans have given themselves their greatest opportunity to win back a state legislative seat since former State Senator Nick Asselta and former Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi won election in 2004 (Asselta) and Fiocchi (won in 2013), under special circumstances; representing the only Team Van Drew member loss, ever. Not to take anything away from Fiocchi, however former Assemblyman Nelson Albano was running for re-election under the cloud of a traffic stop scandal. In the Winter, 2012, Albano was stopped for speeding. Albano was driving to Trenton for a voting session. Albano wrote a scathing letter to the New Jersey State Police Superintendent, claiming that the New Jersey State Trooper (Randy Pangborn) had "disrespected" him during the police stop. However, the police video directly contradicted Albano's claims of mistreatment. Albano had claimed that he was "humiliated, disrespected and embarrassed as a legislator." The video told a very different story. The Trooper was respectful at all times. Albano made other false claims. The Trooper got Albano in-and-out of the police stop in eight minutes and even apologized for issuing him a ticket. Albano had asked the Trooper to give him a break. The Trooper advised him to speak with the court about that. In Albano's defense, this unbecoming conduct was unusual for him and came at a very vulnerable time for him. This incident occurred during the same month that the man who killed his son was released from prison and Albano also had

This is a detailed recap of why Albano was so vulnerable for re-election less than a year later and why Fiocchi was able to win in a perfect political storm. In other words, this is what it has taken for a Republican to win a state legislative seat in the past nearly decade-and-a-half. Getting back to this year. Michael Testa won the Cape May County Republican Endorsement Over former New Jersey Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi 116 to 33. Cape May Republican Chairman Marcus Karavan has done a great job managing the organization since former Chairman Michael Donahue became a New Jersey Superior Court Judge. Karavan is fair-minded and talented. He has positioned his Party to their best chance to win a state legislative seat in a long, long time. For his part, Fiocchi has graciously withdrawn from New Jersey State Senate District 1 Campaign. This now allows the Republican ticket to not have to burn through cash and speak harsh words to/ about one another for the next three months. Testa will be the Republican Nominee and he will face the appointed incumbent
State Senator Bob Andrzejczak in the November 5, 2019 General Election. “I'm honored to have the support and endorsement of the Cape May County GOP," said Testa. I thank former Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi for his gracious decision to withdraw from the race. He was a certainly a formidable opponent." "Together, we're going to Flip the First and bring real conservative leadership to Trenton,” said Testa. Testa previously won the Cumberland County Republican Committee endorsement over Fiocchi by a margin of 45-7. Lower Township Mayor Erik Simonsen and Ocean City Councilman Antwan McClellan will run on the Republican ticket with Testa and face Assemblymen Bruce Land and Matt Milam. This now sets the stage for the first test of a new "Team Van Drew" era. Van Drew has possessed flawless coattails in each and every General Election in District 1 for decades. Even when Van Drew himself was not on-the-ballot, his candidates have always prevailed. Some are wondering, does this change now that he is United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew?

It's always hard to bet against Van Drew. His effective, hard-working nature and almost super natural voter appeal that has consistently cobbled Democrats, Independents and a surprising number of Republicans, who are willing to cross over and support him has reached almost mythical proportions. The Van Drew Team is now running two appointed members (Andrzejczak and Milam) for the State Senate and Assembly. Can Van Drew do what he's always done from Washington, D.C.? Also, does the bitter national climate hurt Van Drew's non-partisan effectiveness in the District? In fairness to Van Drew, he has gotten off to a spectacular start during his Freshman term in The United States House of Representatives. He is the Vice Chairman of the Blue Dog Democrat coalition. This bumper crop of 24 Democrats is something that hasn't existed since President Ronald Reagan was in office. Van Drew has kept his word at every turn. He has bucked his own party on numerous occasions during his first three months as a Member of Congress. Van Drew has voted both with and against President Trump; always in a manner that is in keeping with promises made and his own voting conscience. The General Election here is District
1 is going to be a barn-burner on November 5, 2019. Testa wants it bad. And, The Van Drew team almost never loses. It's highly competitive for the first time in many years. The debates will matter. The overall campaign messages waged. The campaign collateral materials. The television and radio advertising. Any mistakes made will be amplified. In the end, all roads still lead to Van Drew and he's not even on the ballot this year. Can he do it, again? Stay tuned.
