abitat for Humanity, Atlantic County works to build homes, community, and hope in our area.

The organization offers homes to families who struggle to make ends meet or simply do not have the resources to purchase a house of their own.

Families who are blessed with a Habitat For Humanity home are not just handed a house, however.

They must put in the sweat equity by participating in the building process.

After putting in the required 250 hours of labor, the home owners are locked into a 0% interest mortgage.

The homes are sponsored by various local businesses who contribute both in man hours and finances to provide homes to those in need.

The Luck of the Irish Letter from the editor

T

he temperature was below zero the morning I rolled down my window to pay the toll. As I stepped back on the gas and flicked the window button, I knew in an instant I was in trouble. The window was not going back up. No matter how many times or how hard I pulled on that button, my window had other plans.

As I drove, icicles began to attach to my face where the tears of frustration had once been. My teeth chattered and my lips turned blue has I proceeded toward my destination. The frustration had mounted as I proclaimed that if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

What is luck, anyway? I do have a fair amount of Irish in me, so I'm hoping that will qualify me to share my observations about it. If you ask me, “good luck” is simply a good attitude

and outlook on life along with a spirit of positive energy. That's it. Every incident can either be seen as an obstacle or an opportunity. We get to choose how we view and respond to the everyday occurrences of life.

I decided to give it a try. I began to speak as if I absolutely loved my life, even the parts I typically grumbled about. At first it felt like an act but then the unexpected happened.

I actually began to believe what I was saying. The more I projected that positive energy around everyone and everything in my life, the better and happier my life became.

Yes, it was words that began the shift. But in order to change my words, I had to adjust my mindset and look for the good in each and every situation.

Suddenly I felt like the luckiest girl in the world! Nothing had changed except the way I viewed it, yet that changed everything.

I challenge you to to give it a try and you may end up feeling luckier than you thought.

he Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College offers training for culinary and food and beverage personnel for careers in the growing food service and hospitality industries. Students learn different styles and techniques for ordering, preparing and serving food, planning menus, incorporating computer technology, as well as working with an assortment of modern tools and equipment. Nearly 75% of the study is hands-on experience, under the supervision of the faculty in the Academy’s fully-equipped modern facility.

The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College is in its 37th year and now has 4,700 alumni employed all over the world.

The Restaurant Gala is the college’s key fundraising event with proceeds funding scholarships for students attending the Academy of Culinary Arts. Since its inception, the Gala has raised more than $3.5 million for scholarships through the support of the community and corporate sponsors. The proceeds from this event will benefit students tremendously. Last year’s Gala raised $214,400!

comparable programs, the textbooks, tools and uniforms required for any culinary degree make these programs more costly than a traditional academic degree. Atlantic Cape offers financial aid in the form of grants, student loans and work study programs, but many students depend on scholarships to offset remaining tuition and fees . Many of the students at the Culinary Academy would not have the opportunity to attend without the scholarship funding from the Restaurant Gala.

The 36th Annual Restaurant Gala will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the beautiful Harrah’s Waterfront Conference Center in Atlantic City. This black-tie event, held each spring in Atlantic City, draws an average attendance of 1,000 including area businessmen and women,

community leaders, local dignitaries, casino executives and those who simply like to be a part of the action. The 2019 theme, “Recipe for Success,” will celebrate the many important “ingredients” that come together to support students attending the Academy of Culinary Arts.

The event includes a lavish cocktail reception prepared by Academy of Culinary Arts students, signature dishes from more than 40 of the areas finest restaurants, wine, beer, and spirits from local vendors, a delectable dessert extravaganza, a 50/50 raffle drawing, and live entertainment by the Don’t Call Me Francis Band.

Don’t Toss Those Overripe Bananas

I

f there is one thing I can’t stand, it’s wasting food. Even with the best of intentions meal planning, I still find some food goes bad because I forget it’s buried in the back of the refrigerator or what I think my family loves one week will be something no one touches the next week. If you are in the same boat, surely you have passed bananas slowly turning brown on the counter and find yourself

wondering what will come first, someone eating them or having to toss them in the trash. There are many ways to use those bananas and here are some ideas.

The easiest way to save those aging bananas is to slice them and put them in the freezer. Usually I will lay them out on a piece of parchment paper to freeze and then once frozen, put them into a sealed bag. Frozen bananas are the key to good smoothies. Not only do they help create the perfect frozen texture, but they also add enough sweetener so that you don’t need to add sugar.

I make overnight oats weekly for my husband and kids.

Overnight oats are great because it’s a quick, healthy and delicious breakfast which eliminates all meal preparation in the morning. There are countless variations for how to make overnight oats. My favorite recipe is ½ cup old fashioned oats, ¾ cup milk, 1 teaspoon chia seeds (helps thicken the mixture while adding a heart healthy component), 1 teaspoon almond butter and ½ mashed ripe bananas.

Combine all of these ingredients in

a mason jar before bed, shake and enjoy in the morning.

Again, no additional sweetener is needed because the bananas take care of that.

Three Ingredient Cookies are another easy and delicious way to use those bananas.

Mash together 1 cup of oats, a ripe banana and a handful or raisins or chocolate chips.

Drop them by the spoonful onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 15 minutes. I can’t tell you how long they will keep in a container on the counter because they never last more than a couple hours in my house. With just oats, bananas and raisins, you don’t have to feel guilty about eating them all.

When in doubt, make ice pops. Am I the only one with that motto? My kids would eat almost anything in ice pop form.

To a blender add yogurt, a banana and a dash or syrup if you want it sweeter. Pour them into ice pop molds and kids will love these as an after school or after dinner treat.

The most popular recipe on my blog is for kale banana muffins which is probably my favorite way to use ripe bananas. Next time you have bananas browning on the counter, don’t feel stressed. Now you have so many fun and creative ways to use them. Do you have other ideas? I would love to hear them!

2 cups kale 1 ripe banana 1/3 cup maple syrup 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1.5 cups whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon chia seeds 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt ▶Instructions ▶ Preheat oven to 350. Combine egg through vanilla extract in a blender or food processor until well blended. In a mixing bowl combine flour through salt with a whisk. Add wet mixture to dry ingredients and stir with a spoon. Will be thick, like a pancake batter. Spoon mixture into muffin tin that has been greased or sprayed with cooking spray. If making mini muffins cook for 12 minutes. If making regular muffins, cook for 17 muffins.

Hometown Hero: Ellie Hagan

leanor Hagan (aka Ellie) graduated with her master’s degree in physical therapy from Stockton University in 2000 at 50 years old. Her diverse background in sub-acute, outpatient, and homecare provided her a with an awareness that patients diagnosed with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease did not have a place to go for exercise, support, and education regarding their disease.

Hearing her patients describe their frustrations and limitations spurred Ellie to action. Upon opening Body in Balance Physical Therapy & Fitness Center in 2012, she devoted her time and research to understanding how to best serve the Parkinson’s Community. She had a calling in her heart to specialize in a much-needed service for the South Jersey area. She began this service by offering exercise classes to people diagnosed with PD. She was contacted by the Parkinson Coun-

cil who helped her form the nonprofit Parkinson Life Center of Southern New Jersey, 502 (c) 3.

After attending the National Parkinson Foundation training, she learned that she could better serve this community by adding Occupational and Speech therapists to her team of professionals who were dedicated to improving the lives of the Parkinson client, their care-partners, and their familys. A Movement Disorder Specialist was also added to her team of experts helping the Parkinson Life Center of So. NJ

become a “Beacon of Hope” for this population.

The Parkinson’s Life Center (PLC), which operates inside Body in Balance Rehabilitation offers Educational Seminars by PD specialists from Cooper, Drexel, Jefferson, and U of Pa. Monthly support group is held on the 1st Saturday of every month. Classes offered include, but not restricted to Dance, Chair Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Big, PWR, Speech, Balance, and Rocksteady Boxing (two levels). All classes are research-based exercises for people diagnosed with a neurological movement disorder such as Parkinson’s Disease.

The goal is simple for Ellie and her team. Their goal is to offer every person diagnosed with PD and their care-partners the latest research-based exercises in a safe and supportive environment. A place where they can come when first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease for help and support as they travel this road.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease. Specialists and research support the fact that exercise is an essential treatment component for slowing the progression of this disease. Exercise is as important as their medication! No one should navigate this disease alone.

At the Parkinson Life Center, we offer fellowship, education, and support.

he Atlantic City Beer and Music Fest taking place on March 29th & 30th in a A.C. Convention Center is the must attend event in Atlantic City and has gained cult popularity over the last 14 years.

s it me or is this weather crazy? One day rain, then snow the next. The temperatures are in the fifties one day and back to the twenties the next. So, we walk out the door wearing a parka on a Monday and by Wednesday it’s a windbreaker; sweater, no sweater. You get the idea. If you don’t like the weather today, stick around twenty four hours and it’ll change.

It reminds me of what my mentor John Maxwell writes about in his latest book Leadershift. He says that if we as leaders are to succeed in this economy, in this “environment”, we need to be open to change. Not only open but looking for change. We need to be adaptable and willing to make shifts and realize that often these shifts come rather quickly. He uses the example of planning for the future. He says someone asked him recently to talk about the term fast forward. Maxwell said that the reality is fast is faster than ever before and forward is shorter. It used to be, if you were making long term plans, you were talking 10 years out. Now long term is two years out at the most. Why is that? Because with technology and such; with needs changing and

Hey, Hey They Are Still The Monkees As Ovation Hall in Ocean Resort Casino began to fill on Saturday, March 2, 2019 you could see the smiles of anticipation on the faces of the attendees.

ith the recent passing of Peter Tork there was speculation as to if this concert would even take place. Tork has not toured with the Monkees for a while due to illness.

"There are no words right now... hear tbroken over the loss of my Monkee brother, Peter Tork," said Mickey Dolenz. Nesmith initially posted "I am heartbroken" on Facebook, then issued a longer statement. "Peter Tork died this AM. I am told he slipped away peacefully. Yet, as I write this my tears are awash, and my heart is broken. Even though I am clinging to the idea that we all continue, the pain that attends these passings has

no cure. It's going to be a rough day.”

Mickey Dolenz and Mike Nesmith, original Monkees band members have more than fifty years popularity which has certainly taught the Monkees much about concerts. The one thing that is readily apparent is the fact that they know how to please their audience.

It wasn’t Pavarotti, it wasn’t a symphony performance, but then again it wasn’t designed to be, it was old time memories and feel good entertainment. It invoked fond feelings of the past, and for many who were too young to remember the Monkees, it was what their parents told them it would be, fun.

As Ovation Hall in Ocean Resort Casino began to fill on Saturday, March 2, 2019 you could see the smiles of anticipation on the faces of

the attendees.

Spanning many generations from adolescence to the other end of the spectrum, no one seemed to be too young or too old to have a good time.

All photos by Donald B Kravitz It was obvious from the energy that filled the room that the throngs of enthusiastic Monkees “groupies” from years ago, were still faithful to their group and was ready for a good time.

Playing their own instruments, Dolenz and Nesmith on guitar, they were joined on stage by a seven piece band and two back-up singers. Playing and singing one song after another, they performed some of their most popular hits that included, “Mary, Mary;”“Pleasant Valley Sunday”.

The group, formed in 1966 as part of a television show which ran for two years (1966-67), and was responsible for the Monkees first two hit songs, “I’m A Believer” and “The Last Train To Clarksville.” When the show ended the Monkees continued to record having a string of top 10 hits.

Those hits that created the Monkee fan base and one of the reasons the Monkees still draw a large audience and can still continue to tour.

“A Monkees show is a look backward to a simpler time. People miss those times and I think the songs and the memories attached to those songs bring back good feelings to those who hear them.”

he Blackjacks can now officially join the Boardwalk Bullies, Surf, Cardsharks, and Seagulls in professional sports teams that have called Atlantic City home.

The official name and logo of one of the newest franchises in the Arena Football League was revealed in an event held at Ovation Hall at Ocean Resorts Casino on Thursday, March 7th. The event was opened to season ticket holders, partners, special guests and members of the media.

Residents from across the area had the opportunity to submit their ideas for the team name earlier this year. The Blackjacks name was among other top four favorites to be voted on, including the Jackpot, High Rollers, Gamblers, and Royals.

George Manias stated that the organization was in the final process of preparing the team’s identity. After undergoing a legal, trademark, and approval process through the CRDA, the team unveiled the new name and logo.

“We are proud and excited to reveal our identity to the world,” said Manias. “The Atlantic City Blackjacks embody what Atlantic City is all about. The gambling tie-in is a natural, but the royalty, confidence, and strength that our logo represents will translate to the product that we put out on the field and in our community.”

“We can’t wait to add another brand to the Arena Football League family,” added AFL President John Adams. “It will be fun to see AC wearing their team colors and branding proudly for years to come.”

The organization turned to Upside Collective, a digital advertising group in Albany, NY, to create the Blackjack logo. The group designed the logo with a specific set of principles to represent “The attitude of the team, the emotion of the fans, and the thrill of the game.”

The organization provided guests of the evening with a unique reveal of the team logo and name, by showing a short promotional video capturing images of the city’s nightlife and

The franchise may have just announced their name, but building their roster has been in the works for the past week. Free-agency in the AFL started earlier this week,

and made their first signing by getting their signal-caller, QB Warren Smith.

Smith is excited to be the first quarterback in franchise history, but he’s also excited to be joining Offensive Coordinator Shane Stafford, who has coached Smith in the AFL before, most recently during their tenure

with the Washington Valor. Smith puts more responsibility on himself with other players who haven’t been led under Stafford before.

“I feel like I’m almost a second coach,” said Smith.

Smith is no stranger to the Jersey Shore area. The 2012 University of Maine graduate is originally from Forked River in Ocean County, NJ. “I’ve been playing arena football since 2012-2013 and I’ve traveled to multiple states just to play this game,” Smith added.

“I’ve always had a vision of ‘What if they had an arena team in New Jersey?’ That would be perfect for me.

The Green Smoothie Challenge

very March, it feels like I am pulling myself out of a pit of crappy health and way too many months of cold, dark, damp weather, and if you live here at the shore, you know that with the weather we have had, this year is no different! I don’t know about you, but it feels to me like it has been raining for 87 years. I cannot understand how people live in year-round rain, like Seattle or London. We, here in Atlantic County, are beach people. We don’t thrive in gloom and darkness. We come to life in sun, sand, and salty air.

As such, I always find myself needing a total recharge in March. That recharge comes in the form of a giant cup full of green awesomeness and good vibes.

I use the month of March to replenish my depleted body with the vitamins and nutrients that it is missing, due to the over-abundance of carbs and sugar and lack of anything green or healthy… anyone else? Come on, somebody! Enter the Green Smoothie. I have found that blending nutrient-rich leafy greens with other veggies, fruit, and liquid (yogurt, coconut water, almond milk, etc.) bring my body and mind back to life. It is a total rejuvenation!

For 31 days, I commit to consuming a homemade green smoothie every single day. By the end of the month, I almost don’t even recognize myself.

My skin is radiant, my hair is shinier, my energy level is sky-high, my mental clarity is improved, my sleep is deep, my wake is easy, I’m usually a bit more trim, I begin to crave healthier foods, and I feel unbelievably freaking awesome. hat do you think about when you hear the name McAllister?

One thing that comes to mind are the distinctive green and yellow trucks. The McAllister name is part of the fabric of our community dating back to 1876!

It all began in 1876 in Philadelphia with Tom McAllister's great grandfather, Richard McAllister. He began selling wood for heat and ice for refrigeration. The business moved into South Jersey and became known as McAllister Fuels. By the 1950s , they delivered heating oil during the winter and maintained the heaters that Tom McAllister fueled them. In

the 1980s, air conditioning became the norm and McAllister Fuels encompassed home environmental comfort by adding air conditioning sources, now operating yearround.

Modeled after the park in Coney Island, the site became an attraction for young visitors before closing in 1988.

y wife and I, both retired, moved to Egg Harbor Township 10 years ago, to be near our daughter and grandchildren, an 11 year-old boy and 9 year-old twin girls. It was great being busy, always having something to do, going to school events, boardwalk rides, the beach, helping out

with transportation to here, there, and everywhere.

Then, as they got older, things slowed down for us. We were called on less and less for transportation and events. Started spending more

time in front of the TV and on the sofa. Blood pressure creeping up, arthritis getting worse (among other reasons to just not do much). Doctors were on us to exercise and move more.

At some point, our daughter said, “You two need a dog!” “No, no, not again,” I said. Since we were married, back in 1958, we always had a dog.

We had outlived four dogs and didn’t

want to go through the pain of losing another dog. But our daughter, never one to take no for an answer, said “You have to come with me to see something great.” We went to the Atlantic County Animal Shelter in Pleas-

antville and met Itty Bit, a 14-pound part-Westie. Our daughter said, “Mom, just hold her for a minute.”

She held her and I could see it was love at first sight, and I knew, right then, it was a done deal. We named her Itty Bit, because all our other dogs were large. She was the perfect dog for us then, and now, five years later, even more so.

Itty Bit had a plan from the beginning. For the first two weeks, she slept in a crate in the kitchen. Never had to put her in, just said go in and she went and, although she barked a lot during the day, she never barked at night. Then after two weeks I said, “Get in your crate,” but she went to the bedroom door and just looked at me. So I took her bed out of the crate and into the bedroom. About a month later, she put her paws up on the bed and again looked at me. She has been sleeping in our bed ever since.

The part where I believe she rescued us is that from her first day

until now, five years later, we took her for a walk every day all year long, hardly ever missing a day. It helped our blood pressure and our arthritis, among other things. She keeps us laughing a lot, playing with her toys.

And every time we come home, she makes us feel like the most important people on earth.

Our daughter was right, we needed our dog even more than our dog needed us.

Beware of Hidden Sugars

dded sugars aren't a necessary nutrient in your diet.

Although small amounts are fine, they can cause serious harm if eaten in large amounts on a regular basis. A teaspoon of sugar contains 4 grams, so this amounts to 24 grams per day for women and 36 grams for men. Most people today eat much more than that.

As I always preach, the best way to avoid hidden sugars in your meals is to make them at home so you know exactly what's in them. However, if you need to buy prepackaged food, make sure you check the labels to identify any hidden added sugars, especially when buying foods from this list.

Let’s start with breakfast cereals. They are a popular, quick and easy breakfast food. However, the cereal you choose could greatly affect your sugar consumption, especially if you eat it everyday. Some breakfast cereals, particularly those marketed to children, have lots of added sugar. Some even contain 12 grams, or 3 teaspoons of sugar in a small 30-gram (1-ounce) serving Check the label and try choosing a cereal that is high in fiber and doesn't contain added sugar. Or better yet, wake up a few minutes earlier and cook a quick healthy breakfast with a high-protein food like eggs. Eating protein for breakfast can help you lose weight .

All fruit contains natural sugars. However, some canned fruit is peeled and preserved in sugary syrup. This processing strips the fruit of its fiber and adds a lot of unnecessary sugar to what should be a healthy snack.The canning process can also destroy heat-sensitive vitamin C, although most other nutrients are well preserved.Whole, fresh fruit is best. If you want to

eat canned fruit, look for one that has been preserved in juice rather than syrup, which has a slightly lower sugar content.

The very popular, on-the-go breakfasts, cereal bars can seem like a healthy and convenient choice. However, like other "health bars," cereal bars are often just candy bars in disguise.

Many contain very little fiber or protein and are loaded with added sugar.

Vitamin water is marketed as a healthy drink containing added vitamins and minerals.However, like many other socalled "health drinks," Vitaminwater comes with a large amount of added sugar.In fact, a bottle of regular Vitaminwater contains 120 calories and 32 grams of sugar. Despite all the health claims, it's wise to avoid Vitaminwater as much as possible.You could opt for the sugar-free version, which is sweetened with artificial instead. That being said, plain water or sparkling water are much healthier choices if you're thirsty.

Protein bars are a popular snack. Foods that contain protein have been linked with increased feelings of fullness, which can help with weight loss. This has led people to believe that protein bars are a healthy snack While there are some healthier protein bars on the market, many contain around 30 grams of added sugar, making them similar to a candy bar.

When choosing a protein bar, read the label and avoid those that are high in sugar. You can also eat a high protein food like yogurt instead.

Iced tea is a chilled tea, usually sweetened with sugar or flavored with syrup. It's popular in various forms and flavors around the world, and this means the sugar content can vary slightly. Most commercially prepared iced teas will contain around 33 grams of sugar per 12-oz (340 ml) serving, which is about the same as a can of Coke. If you like tea, pick regular tea or choose iced tea that doesn't have any sugars added.

Here it comes! Coffee! A large flavored coffee in some

coffeehouse chains can contain up to 25 teaspoons of sugar.

That's equivalent to 100 grams of added sugar per serving, or nearly 3 times the amount you would get from a 12-oz (340 ml) can of Coke. Considering the strong link between sugary drinks and poor health, it's probably best to stick to coffee without any flavored syrups or added sugar.

Sports drinks can often be mistaken as a healthy choice for those who exercise. However, sports drinks are designed to hydrate and fuel trained athletes during prolonged, intense periods of exercise. For this reason, they contain high amounts of added sugars that can be quickly absorbed and used for energy. In fact, a standard 20-oz (570 ml) bottle of a sports drink will contain 32 grams of added sugar and 159 calories, which is equivalent to 8 teaspoons of sugar . Woah! Sports drinks are therefore categorized as "sugary drinks."

Like soda and fruit juice, they have also been linked with obesity and metabolic disease . Unless you're a marathon runner or an elite athlete, then you should probably just stick to water while exercising.This is by far the best choice for most of us .

Fruit juices , like whole fruits , contain some vitamins and minerals. However, despite seeming like a healthy choice, these vitamins and minerals come with a large dose of sugar and very little fiber.It usually takes a lot of fruit to produce a single glass of fruit juice, so you get much more sugar in a glass of juice than you would get by eating whole fruit. This makes it easy to consume a large amount of sugar quickly. In fact, there can be just as much sugar in fruit juice as there is in a sugary drink like Coke. The poor health outcomes that have been convincingly linked to sugary sodas may be linked to fruit juices too. It's best to choose whole fruit and minimize your intake of fruit juices.

Ketchup is one of the most popular condiments worldwide, but like BBQ sauce, it is often loaded with sugar. Try

to be mindful of your portion size when using ketchup and remember that a single tablespoon of ketchup contains 1 teaspoon of sugar.

BBQ sauce can make a tasty marinade or dip. However, 2 tablespoons of it can contain around 14 grams of sugar, or over 3 teaspoons . In fact, up to 40% of the weight of BBQ sauce may be pure sugar.If you are liberal with your servings, this makes it easy to consume a lot of sugar without meaning to. To make sure you aren't getting too much, check the labels and choose the sauce with the least amount of added sugar. And remember to watch your portions.

Added sugars are often hidden in foods that we don't even consider to be sweet, such as spaghetti sauce. All spaghetti sauces will contain some natural sugar given that they're made with tomatoes.Many spaghetti sauces have extra sugar added to them as well.

The best way to ensure you aren't getting any unwanted sugar in your pasta sauce is to make your own. However, if you need to buy pre-made spaghetti sauce, check the label and pick one that either doesn't have sugar on the ingredients list or where it's listed very close to the bottom. This indicates that it's not a major ingredient.

We're All Irish On St. Patrick's Day

arch 17th is the most important day on the Irish calendar.

While this day resembles luck and fortune, wearing anything with the color green and drinking your favorite pint of beer, it also has a very significant meaning.

St. Patrick’s Day is regarded as one of the most important holidays in Ireland and throughout Irish culture. Celebrated every year on March 17th, this day honors the life of Saint Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland. Born in Scotland, he was credited for bringing Christianity to Ireland during the 5th century. He learned about the various customs, traditions and language before teaching religion and becoming a bishop. Patrick died on March 17th, 461.

The earliest celebrations of St. Patrick’s life date back to the ninth century, but it wasn’t until the early 1600’s when a more formal holiday was adopted. March 17th has since been considered a holy day, and is marked by many celebrations worldwide. In Ireland, the day begins with a traditional church service, followed by a day of parades and food. Last year’s celebrations in Dublin drew an attendance of over 100,000 visitors from around the world.

Originating in 1771, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Philadelphia is one of the oldest parades in the country, and takes place the Sunday before March 17th. Festival goers and onlookers will line the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as the parade makes its way to Penn’s Landing. More than 120 bands and 150,000 marchers will take part in New York’s annual parade, a tradition that dates back to 1762.

This year’s Atlantic City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, taking place on Saturday, March 10th, is expected to draw big crowds to the boardwalk.

Grand Marshalls Sharon Essl and Joe Crilley will lead the procession from Garden Pier to Albany Avenue.

The city of Chicago has taken a unique twist to the holiday. Every year, the Chicago River is decorated with over 40 lbs. of green dye. This process takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Tens and thousands of people will flock to Chicago for this year’s festivities.

Many commonly mistake leprechauns as bringing good luck or fortune. In folklore, the leprechaun is a small fairy with a beard. Short in stature, these mischievous creatures would end up playing tricks, deceive people.

Shamrocks, or three-leaf clovers, are common symbols for the Holy Trinity, but Americans commonly get this confused to the four-leaf clover. Four-leaf clovers stand for faith, hope, love and luck. Legend believes that finding one is a symbol of good fortune, but your odds of looking over one are slim. Only 1 in 5,000 clovers have four leaves, making them

exceptionally rare.

Traditional foods such as pink bacon, savory roast chicken and potatoes are about as Irish as you can get. Corned beef and cabbage is a popular dish enjoyed by Irish Americans.

Irish potatoes are another treat that becomes popular around this time of year, but don’t be deceived by its name.

While they may look like potatoes, these sweet treats originated in the Philadelphia region and are actually made of coconut and cinnamon.

Traditional Irish music is often comprised of ballads, drinking songs and laments performed in an accompaniment of instruments such as the flue, fiddle and bagpipes. are

performed for audiences far and wide. Many of today’s modern bands have been influenced by traditional Irish songs, bringing a new twist to the Celtic sound such as Celtic fusion. The Coors, Gaelic Storm and Lunasa have acclaimed success worldwide for their unique sound.

Nearly forty percent of Americans will take part in a day of celebration on March 17th. On this day, many will attend church to honor the Patron Saint Patrick. Party goers will enjoy a round of Guinness and attend social gatherings; others may decorate their homes and plan a special meal with their family and friends. Whether you are of Irish decent or not, St. Patrick’s Day has become a worldwide celebration of Irish history and culture that will continue to be celebrate for generations to come.

Real Estate Update A look at Galloway Township

ost of us do not realize that Galloway Township is so big. It’s 115.2 area square miles make Galloway the largest municipality in New Jersey. The recent years Galloway has shown strong commercial growth and expansion up and down Jimmie Leads road and the White Horse Pike / Rt 30 area. This is the result of strong government leadership, in my opinion. The entire municipality was designated a “Rehabilitation Area”. Portions of the sprawling township were designated “Redevelopment Areas”.

Also, a quicker planning and approval process was implemented, along with tax abatements offered. An improving economy helped fuel the growth.

Residential home sales have improved over the last year. Closed single family home sales are up 12.6%, days on the market are down 11.8% for faster sales too. Interesting, the median sales price average jumped from $175,000 to $185,000. That’s the same exact median sales price for Atlantic County last year.

The most expensive single-family home sold last year was a stunning 4-bedroom, 3.5 bath built back in 2012. With 4672 square feet, finished basement, inground pool and backing up to a golf course, it fetched $940,000.

The Townhouse-Condo segment improved too with median sales price up, improving 16 %, and the days on the market down for much faster sales a 28.1% increase comparing 2017 to 2018.

Senior Moments A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

On a Wing and a Prayer e just returned from our annual trip to Florida to visit my in laws via our local airport. I have always enjoyed flying since my father instilled in me the love of aviation at an early age. He would take me on regular visits to Bader Field in Atlantic City to watch the banner planes picking up their signs. I also had friends who owned their own aircrafts and would often ask if I would like to take a short hop with them and I always accepted.

Flying commercially though is a far cry from a small private aircraft. For me, the planning, packing, getting to the airport, checking in, TSA, etc. takes the joy out of it. Now the airline I flew on added another line in which to wait; the check your own luggage line. Instead of checking it in at the counter, I had to wait in line, weigh my bag, put in my flight info, print out a tag and attached it to my luggage. I then had to take the luggage to the counter and wait in that line to check in. That's what I needed, one more line. Finally, we were wedged into the cylindrical tube with over 200 fellow travelers seeking comfort in their electrical devices, books or magazines. I always find the hurtling down the

runway and lift off exhilarating. It is amazing how the power of just two jet engines pushes you into the seat as the aircraft rapidly picks up speed.

On this occasion though, just when I thought we were going to climb, the engines were shut down and the brakes were applied. Over the intercom the announcement started with "This is your pilot." Well, that's certainly a relief. I would really be concerned if it were someone other than the pilot. "Stay in your seat, stay in your seat, stay in your seat." Flight attendants all wore a forced smile. "We have a maintenance issue and will be returning to the gate to have our mechanics investigate." I think "mechanics" is not the preferred term used to describe someone who is going to make sure you can safely fly at over 500 mph at 37,000 feet above the earth. Even at the auto dealership service centers, they are called "technicians." I am usually pretty relaxed on flights and have become accustomed to the usual noises that accompany a flight, i.e. landing gear being extended or retracted, flaps, etc. but admittedly, this was cause for some concern. The only other time I felt concerned on a flight was when I was very young; my mother used to take my brother and I to England, her homeland. At that time, it was a long propeller driven flight.

I remember looking out the window when it became dark and notice a flame coming out of the nearest engine. I kept my eyes on that flame for hours thinking if I didn't look away, it wouldn't spread to the other engine and then the wing. I did not know enough airplanes at that age to realize the flame I was intently

Back on our Florida flight, the pilot came back on and announced it was just a computer glitch which can be fixed and we will soon be on our way. I figure he just forgot his password or was entering it in all upper case instead of lower case, didn't include the numbers and a punctuation mark. After about an hour, we were sitting on the end of the runway again. A glance around the cabin showed a heightened sense of concern. People were laser focused on their phone, tablets, hands were clenched, eyes closed and I am sure some prayers were being said. The pilot comes on with an announcement, "Let's try this again." Oh, I feel much better now.

Phillies sign Superstar Bryce Harper To A Massive Deal

fter 117 days, an endless amount of rumors, the best hitter to hit the free agent market in decades has found a home. Bryce Harper and the Phillies agreed to a 13 year deal worth $330 million dollars on Thursday February 28th. The contract contains no opt outs and a full no trade clause.

Fan Graphs' Jon Heyman was the first to report that an agreement had been reached, Talks between Harper's agent Scott Boras and the Phillies really picked up in earnest on Thursday morning and by noon time the two sides found co m m o n ground and a deal was done, Harper flew to Florida last Friday and took his physical and was introduced to the Philadelphia media at press conference which was held at Spectrum Field in Clearwater. Harper will receive a $20 million signing bonus which is to be paid in two installments on June 1st and November 1st. His 2019 salary will be $10 million. The years 2020-2028 he will make $26 million each year and from 2029-2031 Harper will make $22 million each season. There is a likelihood that the

Designated Hitter will be coming to the National League at some point during the terms of his contract.

Harper said at his press conference “It's good to feel wanted by the Phillies and the fans of Philadelphia.

I am going to grow my family in this city. I wanted to finish my career somewhere. I can't wait to be a part of the Phillies for a long period of time. He also mentioned he wants to bring a parade down Broad Street.

Bryce Harper was the #1 overall pick in the 2010 MLB draft by the Washington Nationals and spent the previous seven seasons in DC. He won Rookie of the Year in 2012 and the National League Most Valuable Player in 2015.

Harper reportedly turned down a short term deal from the Dodgers and a long term deal with the Giants before signing with the Phillies. His average annual value of the deal of the contract is $25.3 million dollars which gives the Phils flexibility to acquire players and help win another World Series Title. Harper himself said he plans to recruit other players to join him to play with the Phillies.

process. Trout is a free agent in two years and there is a possibility he and Harper could be roaming the same outfield at Citizens Bank Park in 2021 and beyond.

After news of the signing broke around 3 pm on Thursday, fans flocked to Citizens Bank Park and bought tickets. The Phillies have sold over 100,000 tickets since Harper signed. The club has even sold 10,000 tickets at their Spring Training Complex in Clearwater. Phillies fans are flying south to warm and sunny Florida to catch a glimpse of the newest star to play in Philadelphia.

Bryce Harper is expected to make his Phillies debut as a designated hitter on Saturday March 9th at Spectrum Field.

Other Philadelphia athletes such as Ben Simmons and Alshon Jeffrey have welcomed Harper to the city of Brotherly Love. The fact that there are no opt outs and a full no trade clause shows the commitment that Bryce and his family have made to the Phillies and the city of Philadelphia.

He wants to do everything he can to help this team win for a long, long time.

What Jersey number will Bryce Harper wear? He previously wore #34 in Washington but that number in Philadelphia was worn by the late great Roy Halladay. Harper said that number should be retired. He chose number three and since it was revealed his #3 jersey broke the sales record for best 24 hour period of any player in any sport after a jersey launch. Phillies fans like me are extremely excited that he signed here instead of signing with a team on the west coast, which is within a few hours drive of his house. Harper is a Las Vegas Native.

Opening Day is a few short weeks away on March 28th. ESPN's first Sunday night game of the year is on March 31st and Bryce Harper will be in the lineup on National TV. He faces his old team, the Nationals 5 times in the first 2 weeks of the season.

Along with other free agents Andrew McCutchen, David Robertson and the trade acquisitions of Jean Segura and J.T. Realmuto this Phillies lineup is one to be reckoned with in the National League. Great things are ahead for the Phillies and their fans!

A Podcast for Chefs

t used to be, not all that long ago, that when you went on a long car trip you turned on your radio and listened to an AM station (hopefully without any static) and/or if you were lucky you found an FM station that had a strong signal. (If you’ve ever driven the length of the Pennsylvania Turnpike you know what I mean.) Then came new technology, and we would put in a tape or CD and listen to music or an audio book. Now we either listen to music we downloaded to our smartphone or to podcasts, also that we’ve downloaded.

According to March 2018 Nielsen research data, there are over 660,000 podcasts, and 500,000 of those podcasts are available through Apple’s iTunes. As far as I can tell no one has been able to determine how many food and food-industry related podcasts there are, but there are so many that to listen to all of them would probably be impossible. Just search “food podcasts” on iTunes or Stitcher and you’ll see what I mean.

There are podcasts that are produced by popular consumer magazines, such as The Bon Appétit Foodcast and Christopher Kimball’s Milk

Street Radio Podcast. There are podcasts that entertain and educate with humor, such as The Sporkful hosted by Dan Pashman. And there are podcasts that trace food through history, such as culinary historian Linda Pellacio’s A Taste of the Past. All of these, and many more, are available free of charge for you to download to your smartphone or tablet, or to listen to on your computer – all you need is time!

Recently I found an excellent podcast that focuses solely on chefs. Andrew Talks to Chefs, hosted by food writer Andrew Friedman and produced by Heritage Radio Network, features in-depth interviews with well-known chefs from around the United States and the world. If you are or were in the business, or if you’re currently a culinary student, I know you will find it interesting, informative and educational.

One reason I mention Andrew Friedman’s podcast is that in October 2018 I wrote a Shore Local article titled’ “So, You Want to Open a Restaurant?” I discussed the need for a business plan, restaurant experience, and understanding the financial side of the business among other things. Andrew’s recent podcast, episode 70, included a roundtable discussion with chefs Emeril Lagasse, Andrew Zimmern and Amanda Cohen that I highly recommend every chef – especially new chefs entering the workforce with the dream of opening their own restaurant – listens to.

These three experienced chefs give excellent, solid advice about the importance of first being a good chef with experience, knowledge and skill; secondly having fundamental knowledge of the restaurant business inside and out; thirdly hiring a good lawyer, not an agent, to help navigate business deals; and, finally, taking the right amount of time to grow and develop so that you can be successful going forward. I wholeheartedly agree with them; in fact, it’s the same advice I’ve given to young cooks and chefs throughout my career.

Right now Andrew has over 70 podcasts available, and some of the chefs he’s interviewed include well-known “media” chefs like Eric Ripert, Michael Solomonov (whom I know personally) and Alex Guarnaschelli, and some excellent but not as well-known chefs like Robert Aikens (who worked in Philadelphia back in 2013 and is now in Washington, D.C), Miles Thompson, formerly of

Michael’s in Los Angeles, and Angela Dimayuga, who left her job as a chef to become part of the hotel business in a creative cultural capacity.

The latest in the Race for the New Jersey State Senate, General Assembly in Districts 1 & 2

The Hurley Line: n a "Hurley in the Morning"WPG Talk Radio 104.1 exclusive on Friday, March 1, 2019,Atlantic County Freeholder Frank Formica confirmed that he was dropping out of the race for the New Jersey General Assembly in District 2.

Formica shared that both personal and professional issues have arisen that prevent him from staying in the race. Formica is facing two substantial lawsuits regarding personal injuries that employees experienced at Baker Boys LLC. Formica said it was with "a very heavy heart" that he must leave the campaign. Formica knew that it was untenable for him to remain as a

candidate for the state legislature, "because the Democrats would attack me and I would hurt the entire ticket and I can't allow that to happen," said Formica.

Formica also confirmed that he plans to raise money for the Republican ticket and offer any campaign assistance that the Republican Party needs.

Formica's departure dramatically alters the state of this race for the two open Republican Nominations.

Formica was a heavy favorite to grab one of them. Formica was also enthusiastically running on a ticket with former Brigantine Mayor Phil Guenther.

In another exclusive, we have have confirmed that Guenther will remain in the race. The electoral math for the Atlantic County Committee in deciding between three candidates to fill two seats versus four, changes the dynamics of the campaign.

Additionally, with Formica exiting, perhaps other candidate(s) may be enticed to enter the race. As of our deadline, the race remains a three-person field.

In the last issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine we handicapped the field of four. Here's how we see it now: 1. Freeholder John Risley 2. Mayor Phil Guenther 3. Councilman James Toto Although we forecast that Toto is still running out of the "money" ... his prospects have dramatically improved with Formica's exit. Previously, Toto was being hopelessly boxed-out by the more well known candidates.

Toto is the quintessential gentleman and a very hard worker. He wants this nomination bad and he will not be out-worked. Despite these factors, Risley-Guenther will be tough to beat.

With Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson on the ballot and the mounting unpopularity with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy ... this is a much more favorable environment for Republicans to run-in versus the past two elections cycles.

State Senator Chris Brown was one of the only Republicans to win at large in the recent past. Risley and Formica also scored narrow at large victories in nearly a Democrat wave climate.

Risley is now an overwhelming favorite to capture one of the two Republican Nominations. He's battle tested and he has proven to the Atlantic County County Committee voters that he can win county-wide.

This leaves just one spot. As of now, it will either be Guenther or Toto.

Guenther was the long-time Mayor of Brigantine. Toto is a current Councilman in Somers Point.

The two Republicans will face Democratic incumbent Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo and John Armato in the November 5, 2019 General Election.

The Republicans will have to overcome millions of dollars that will flow freely from neighboring Camden County. And, just as daunting, Republicans will have to overcome the vaunted Craig Callaway "Vote by Mail" juggernaut.

The Callaway Organization has scaled its operation and has achieved electoral success never seen before in Atlantic County history.

↘Continued from 32 his last two re-election cycles, he has had to wait until the conclusion of the Atlantic County Democratic Convention takes place to learn if he would have a challenger..

Eight years ago, the Democrats did not field a challenger. Four years ago, James Schroeder, Jr., Esquire won the Democratic Nomination at the convention and ultimately dropped outof-the-race, assuring Levinson's latest election victory was guaranteed.

A few weeks ago, "Hurley in the Morning" reported that Democrat Michael Price may step-up and challenge Levinson. Price is a relative unknown, who was recently appointed to a vacant Egg Harbor Township Board of Education seat.

This much we do know. As usual, the Democrats are having significant difficulty finding a candidate willing to run against Levinson. It would be a smarter strategy for the Democrats to not challenge Levinson. But, the competitive nature of electoral politics makes this an unappealing choice.

In Neighboring District 1,Cumberland County Republican Party Chairman Michael Testa is running a masterclass campaign. It is a campaign of shock and awe, with Testa rolling out one major league Republican endorsement after another.

Testa is also running an effective "Flip-the-1st" strategy. I've been covering campaigns closely for nearly three decades. Testa is running one of the most impressive campaigns I have ever witnessed. It is smart. Takes nothing for granted. He is respectful to all. And, remarkably in these cesspool, divided political times in which we live ... Testa is running a totally positive campaign.

Testa's current list of endorsements reads like a "Who's Who" novel of elite and respected Republicans.

Here's the list to date: Former New Jersey Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, who literally called into the "Hurley in the Morning" program unannounced, because she was listening live during Testa's announcement of his candidacy. Guadagno offered Testa an unconditional, enthusiastic endorsement.

The rest of the Testa endorsements include: Gerry Thornton - Freeholder Director, Cape May County Erik Simonsen - Lower Township Mayor Jeff Lindsay - Cumberland County Freeholder Joe Sparacio - Cumberland County Freeholder Former District 1 State Senators (all legends) ... State Senator Tom Kean, Jr. - District 21 State Senator Chris Brown - District 2 The smartest thing that District 1 could do is to nominate Testa for Senate and formerAssemblyman Sam Fiocchi for one of the Assembly seats.

Both of these fine men could win on November 5, 2019.

Instead, they are presently running against each other for the Republican Senate nomination. Despite this, they could both still wind-up being running mates. That would be the smart thing to do.

Testa and Ficchi are two of the most respectful, nicest and decent men that you will ever see in the filthy, dirty business of electoral politics.

On the Democratic side, Testa,-Fiocchi will face the appointed incumbent State Senator Bob Andrzejczak, incumbentAssemblyman Bruce Land and the current and formerAssemblyman Matt Milam.

Regardless of how the Republican nominating sweepstakes goes, make no mistake about it that the Democratic ticket will be running as "The Van Drew Team."

United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew is not on the ballot and yet, he remains the key. Without Van Drew, District 1 would have three Republican Representatives at the state legislative level.

Even when Van Drew is not on the ballot, he works his electoral magic and whomever he supports typically wins. This will be Van Drew's toughest test. It's different when you're splitting time in Washington, D.C. and the district, however, never underestimate Van Drew.

Much still remains undecided. Stay close, as we'll be providing the most comprehensive coverage anywhere.

Climbing the Walls

ell, flu season came a little late for my youngest, so here we are with a bucket by the side of the couch while Spongebob and Mr. Krabs yell in the background. Yes, we are yearning for spring. It’s tempting to throw open the windows , but lingering snowf lakes and temps in the 30’s tell me I must wait.

For gardeners, the anticipation might feel more intense, but it’s certainly not a time of idleness. Gardeners have visions of seed catalogs and heirloom tomatoes dancing in their heads. And we must plan.

So instead of climbing the walls ourselves, let’s consider climbing plants. As you enter my backyard, you must pass through an arbor.

Though it’s been there for years, I still haven’t found just the right plant to climb over it. This year, that must change. For me, scent is crucial. Gar-

dens should delight the senses, and entering a garden with the fragrance of beautiful flowers wafting through the air sounds dreamy.

One of my favorite scented climbing plants is wisteria. I love driving around in the spring when they seem to be everywhere. Their grape-like clusters cascading down are beautiful and their scent is intoxicating.

A word of caution though. These beauties are strong. Their twisted branches can take down a weak arbor. My own wisteria had climbed up the back of our house, reaching to the second floor. It was breathtaking, but my dear uncle convinced my husband that it would rip the wires from our house.

Though I gave the okay to chop it down, my feelings were not fond for him the day I watched him taking an axe to the roots. It was man against beast at that point, and it was quite the battle since the roots of wisteria are even tougher than their strong branches.

Another wonderfully scented climber is jasmine. Its pure white flowers look like little stars, and the scent is dazzling. Choose carefully, as most climbing jasmines are not hardy enough to handle our cold winters.

Many gardening books and websites recommend English ivy and Virginia creeper. They might be great on a wall if you attend Yale or Harvard, but in my opinion stay far away from these invasive climbers. If only I could have back all the hours I’ve spent pulling English ivy, which chokes everything in its path. If, however, despite my warning you still yearn to have either of these collegiate plants, email me and I would love to offer as much as you can dig up.

Though orange is not my favorite color in the garden, I love growing trumpet vine for two reasons. First, hummingbirds love them. Growing up, we had a fence post covered in orange trumpet vine flowers and I would hardly ever see it without hummingbirds enjoying their nectar.

Second, since this plant was located at my childhood home, it reminds me of my dad. Now, in my own backyard, we are “blessed” with a 1950’s antenna tower which I’ve trained my

would be sweet autumn clematis. As its name implies, it blooms in fall and covers itself in tiny white blossoms. It can tend to be invasive but when you see it blooming, you might not mind.

Most other varieties of clematis that come to mind are not invasive and have large stunning flowers. They come in a wide array of colors and shapes and are a must-have climbing plant. My gardening goal has always been to combine the deep purple clematis ‘Jackmanii’ with the soft pink of New Dawn rose. ome people are addicted to online shopping. I’m not one of them. I actually have a library addiction. I know, it sounds weird. At any given time I have books out from three different libraries. Not only do I love frequenting libraries for the books, but they also offer fantastic programs, most of which are free! When I saw Linwood Library announce a new program called Read to a Furry Friend, I couldn’t wait to take my kids to check it out. They love reading and love dogs so it was a perfect match.

Donna Downs has had a successful dog training business for the past 38

years. In addition to training service and therapy dogs, she also started a reading program at several of the local libraries which recently expanded to Linwood on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 5:30pm. She brings her two dogs.

scious. The dogs are trained to go into a default position when being read to and the reading relaxes the dogs.

In addition to visiting libraries, Donna’s dogs also visit nursing homes and schools. There is something extremely comforting and relaxing about being in the company of a dog. Donna told me that not only do children attend the library programs to read to the dogs, but many adults attend regularly just to give hugs to the dogs because they find it calming, especially after a particularly difficult day.

If you can’t make it to the Linwood library on the first or third Tuesday of the month from 4:30-5:30, Donna goes from Linwood to the Mays Landing library from 6:30 to 7:30pm.

ld ways and traditions die hard in the Pine Barrens. And such was the case with a tradition my mother held close, and still does, especially now. It was handed down to her from her mother, who got it from her mother, and so on. My sister and I, and some of the older Pineys hold on to it as well, to this day. It’s known as “The extra plate”.

Every year, the biggest, most special dinner my mother cooked at our house was Easter dinner. On Easter Sunday, mom would march me and my sister off to church very early in the morning, come back home, and start cooking. Sometimes ham. Sometimes rabbits.

Sometimes lamb, or venison. But cook she did. For hours and hours.

At around 4:30 PM, she’d start setting the dining room table, and directly across from where her place setting was, she would set an extra place setting. And every year, she’d put the same serving of food on the extra plate as was on the rest of our plates. My father would goad her and tease her about “serving food to the phantom who never shows up.” When dinner time ended, we’d fight and hassle each other over who got what from the extra plate, my father usually winning out. It was like that every year.

And no one outside of our family ever showed up to sit there. Until that year.

That year, it snowed sideways for three days and nights before Easter Sunday, and never got above freezing. Folks in the Barrens still talk about the “Easter Nor’easter”.

For us, it meant very little meat for dinner, as hunting was out of the question. What little there was in the freezer was barely enough, and had to be cooked on the wood stove by candle light, as the power was out, and had been for days.

“I’ve been traveling for some time now. Here and there. Nowhere in particular, really”, said the stranger, as he ate the stew and beans.

“Well”, said mother, “you can’t go back out in a storm like this. You must spend the night”, she said, looking at my father for re-assurance.

“By all means” father quipped.

“Thank you, but I must take my leave“, he said, looking at mother, smiling gently. “You have been so kind over the years, and I wanted to thank you in person. I only wish the spirit of sharing and giving that lives in your heart was shared by more.”

Getting up and walking to the front door, he turned, saying “Thank you, and bless you all”, and walked back out into the night. I ran to the door to watch him, but to my amazement, he was gone. Nowhere to be seen. And, shockingly, there were no footprints in the snow. It was like he’d simply vanished.

“Mom! Dad!” I yelled, running back to the table to tell them what I’d seen. Suddenly, the lights came back on, and I heard my mother say “Dear God! It’s full!”

She was standing in the kitchen looking into the refrigerator. It was chock-full of every kind of food imaginable. Meats. Dairy. Eggs.

Vegetables. My father got up and stood there, staring in disbelief.

We’d truly been blessed.

Dad passed on years ago, and my sister and I have our own families, now. We take turns having each other’s families, and mom, to our homes every year for Easter dinner. Regardless of whose home we share dinner in that year, there is still an extra plate set across from where Mom sits.

And sure enough, Mom set the extra plate, and filled it with the stewed meats and beans she‘d cooked. Dad stared at it, looked at my mother, and was about to say something as we were sitting down to eat. And that’s when somebody knocked on the front door.

“Dear Lord, in this storm!” Mom said, a look of concern gashing across her face as she walked towards the front door, wiping her hands on her apron.

“Has to be some kind of nut, or somebody from the power company out there, for God’s sake!”, called my father after her, then mumbled, “and needs his head examined” as he ate another mouthful, looking towards the front of the house.

From the other room, we heard Mom speaking softly with someone. It sounded like a man’s voice, and we heard her pleading with him, “Please! Oh, please come in and have some hot food with us…”

She appeared, directly, in the dining room with a man standing next to her. We all stopped eating and looked at him, Dad saying, “Uhhh…welcome, stranger. And who are you, out on a night like this?”

“He’s having dinner with us is who he is!”, Mother said matter-of-factly. She led him over to the extra plate, and seated him.

He was wrapped in many layers of what looked like sheets and blankets, with a hoody covering his head. He had very long hair and a very long beard, yet looked very young somehow. Almost pathetic.

“What are you doing out in weather like this?” my father asked, trying to be nice. I could see in his eyes that he was sizing this fellow up, and wasn’t real happy with what he was concluding.
